Barbara
This is really the secret sauce to creating flattering outfits. So all of these can be helpful and fun to play around with. But the most important thing when you are putting together outfits and wanting to flatter your body and call attention to the areas that you prefer to highlight and away from. The things that you feel a little bit more conscious about is using movement and this is directing the eye where you want it to go. This is kind of like the little magic tricks that you can do as a stylist when you're getting dressed. And that's what I'M empowering you to be is your own stylist this week. And moving forward, trust yourselves. Use your own intuition. You know when you put something on and you have that weird feeling like, oh, I'm not sure how this looks on me. Trust yourself. Go with it. Don't force yourself to wear things that you don't feel your best in. Think about the colors that you hear the most compliments on. Look for some similarities in your wardrobe, and then maybe you can start to play detective and find some of these clues. If you generally look better in all the colors in your wardrobe that are in a cooler family, you might be onto something. Maybe you look best in cooler colors. Right? So think about the things that you feel most confident in, the things that people compliment you the most on. And of course, I would love to help you more personally as well. And we'll talk about that in just a second. We're here to talk about planning because this is such a critical thing, and it's something I see women skip over all the time. Has anyone done this? Like, I'm going to raise my hand right now because have you ever looked at your closet and said, I have nothing to wear? And then you immediately run out to the store, or you run to Amazon, or you go to Target, or you head to Nordstrom and you just go and buy the first thing that you can find for whatever event you have coming up, like who has just run out and bought things because you didn't have what you needed. Without thinking about all of the pieces that we're going to talk about tonight of effective wardrobe planning, and we tend to adapt this saying of failing to plan is planning to fail for other things in our life. But we don't often think about applying that to our wardrobes. And so I want to help you become more strategic about what you bring into your wardrobe. And it all starts with the planning process. What I want you to do. These are the four things that I absolutely encourage you to do before you do any shopping. You're going to be like me. Your friends and family are going to say, please, just buy the thing already. But if you want to be really thoughtful about it and curate a closet that you love, this is my must do. For we already talked about the first one. So put a check mark. You're going to audit your closet. You've got to see what you have in there. Then you're going to take an inventory of what's left. And what's really helpful about this step is that you're going to Be able to see what you have an overabundance of. If you have too many of this almost identical white shirt, maybe, you know, this is a wake up call. You don't need to buy more of those when you go out shopping next time. You'll also be able to find some hidden gems as you go through the audit process. So you can write down any hidden things that you totally forgot you had. That's one of the best things. It's like shopping your own closet and uncovering pieces that you forgot about that you haven't worn in a while that you realize, oh, maybe you have a new thing that this goes really well with and you hadn't thought to pair them together before. Just getting in there and playing around with your pieces can open up a whole new world of possibilities. This is like the first thing that I envision when I hear capsule wardrobe. This is probably what a lot of you are thinking, right? It's like timeless pieces. Some of those, you know, quintessential things like a white T shirt and a white button down shirt and a little black dress and classic straight leg jeans and the all of the things that are kind of on those Ascent wardrobe essentials checklists in neutral colors. Right. We have this vision of what a capsule wardrobe should be, and there's nothing wrong with this, but I want to help you break open what's possible for you and maybe get rid of some of the limitations that you've been putting on yourself. If you are thinking that maybe you don't want to have a capsule wardrobe because you're going to be bored with it, or maybe you don't want to have a capsule wardrobe because you're intimidated by the thought of having all of these restrictions in place. Right? So let's talk about some of the things that I see hang people up. The first myth that you hear a lot, and I get this question a ton, people are always like, how many pieces should I have in my wardrobe? And what you will often hear as it relates to building a capsule is that an effective capsule wardrobe has 25 to 50 pieces, roughly. I hear 33 pieces a lot. There's a whole method for that for building out a 33 piece wardrobe. My personal thoughts and what I would love to invite you to consider as a possibility is that an effective capsule wardrobe has what you need. There is so much room for interpretation in that. But that's the goal, is it not? You just want to look in your wardrobe and have the right things that you need. And for me, that is the benchmark of a successful capsule and a streamlined wardrobe that it is providing you with what you need to get dressed, to feel confident and to show up at your best in the easiest way possible. You are the boss of your wardrobe, and you know better than anyone else what you need for your life. So I want you to, like, close your eyes right now, and I want you to picture your dream wardrobe. You can actually do this with me right now. Close your eyes right now. Let's do this. Let's picture your dream wardrobe. Think about what you see. Is it maybe an assortment of beautiful everyday dresses that you can just throw on, feel feminine, feel effortless? Maybe you see a couple of interchangeable handbags that work with all of them? Or maybe it feels really important for you to have a nice assortment of elevated matching lounge sets in your best colors so you can feel amazing when you're just relaxing at home with your family or working from home. Maybe you like a lot of cozy sweaters to choose from in the winter. I've been freezing, and so I love having a lot of comfy sweaters and soft knits. Or maybe especially for my Australian friends who are luckily in the hot summer months right now. Maybe you like to live in bathing suits all summer and you want to have a lot of great resort wear in your collection. Or maybe you want a super simple closet like I mentioned, with as little as possible. The point of doing this exercise is to start thinking about that your wardrobe can be whatever you want it to be. And so the first thing we need to do is let go of any restrictive or limiting numbers around that. There are no parameters here. I want you to think instead about what pieces will move you through your typical week with ease. An effective capsule wardrobe has five to eight core colors. That's it. I love me a good neutral. I really do. I told you guys, like, after I had my son, I went down a huge rabbit trail of neutrals. My wardrobe ended up, like, all cream and beige, and it was very elegant and it felt very cool, but it also did not feel me at all because I love me some color. I was just talking about last night. Like, I mean, just look at all of these incredible colors that we get to choose from in our wardrobes. And so for me, I don't subscribe to that. Surprise, surprise. I think an effective capsule wardrobe has color harmony. All right, what am I doing, friends? Yes. I am hunting. That is very true. Assessing price and value of the product. Yes. Negotiations. Helping myself prioritize. Yep. Getting creative. Comparison shopping. These are all so Accurate and so true and so important. I am shopping intentionally. Do you notice? I haven't thrown anything in my cart and said, this will do. I'm getting this thing. Or, this is so cute. It's coming home with me right now. I'm being empowered in my choices, and I'm being responsible and conscious about what I'm buying, what I'm spending. So I really want you to just slow down. That's a huge lesson right here. Just in this little exercise is to slow down, explore your options. Don't say, I can't find what I need. I don't have enough money for it. I mean, we've been talking about this for maybe two to five minutes tops, and we found some really great options at the price point that I made up for this exercise. I do want you to be able to feel confident and empowered when you shop so that you don't get talked into something that doesn't really look amazing on you or that wasn't on that shopping list. You don't actually need it for your wardrobe. Wardrobe. So I want to arm you with a few very powerful questions to ask so you can avoid regretting what you buy down the road. You have all done so much work on your style mood boards now, and you're really getting clear on what you want to look and feel like when you get dressed and the options that you want to have in your wardrobe. So when you are shopping, before you buy something, ask yourself, like, do a quick check. Is it moving you in the direction of your overall style goals? Would you save it to your mood board? So really good quick check of. Am I just defaulting to old patterns? Is this something that aligns? Remember, when you're designing a capsule wardrobe, you want to think about it as a cohesive collection. So you've got to think about everything integrated together. Does this align with where you want your wardrobe to go? That's a great first question. Will the colors or the print, if there's a print in the piece that you're considering, will it complement you, your personal features, like we talked about, your skin tone, your hair color, your eye color, does it bring out your natural beauty, and does it work with your wardrobe? Remember, we're not limiting to just a few colors, but we do want things to mix and match as easily as possible. Can I come up with, we talked about this one yesterday? At least three outfits or uses for this item. I really do not want you to settle anymore for pieces that you do not love. If you're excited to really take Some time to thoughtfully build a wardrobe that excites you, that feels good, that you're happy to look at every day, that's fun to play dress up in. You're not going to be able to keep settling anymore. So I don't want you to rush to just scoop up things that you need. I'd rather see you go slow, take your time, work through this process. If you don't find the perfect thing one season, maybe look for it again the next season. Don't settle if you can help it. And that really does come down to pre planning for what you need for this season. So I asked Barbara to hop on just to speak to why she initially invested in her style collective and why she continues to invest in this program even though she's got the system. Because even if you're not ready or if you're not even considering her style collective right now, that is completely fine. If it doesn't feel like the next step for you at this moment, for whatever reason, I still want you to hear why investing in yourself and in your style education is important and what it can do for you and what to look for pro in a program or in working with a stylist or a style coach when the time is right for you.
Eleanor
Oh, I just can't even tell you every penny, every penny. Just the self confidence that is still growing. But I just know I can come to the collective or I can come to class or I can refer the education or I can know. I know she talked about that in a podcast. I can go quick, look that up. I don't. I can tune out so much more noise now. And I just know that, that there's a structure there for me and the more I follow it and the better I get. It's more fun. The structure gives me a lot of freedom and maybe that as hard as that. But once I kind of know the areas that I complain that make me feel good, it makes me feel fine to ignore other things or just go, oh, that I love that. But maybe that's not, you know, something that looks nice on my body. So I can appreciate it for what it is, but I'm going to move on to the next thing.
Barbara
All right. Eleanor said how? What do you do with socks these days? I feel like that's a question for Gen Z. You might have the wrong style coach, Eleanor. I don't know. I don't know what the kids are doing with socks these days. All I wear this time of year are fluffy socks that keep my feet warm. I Have them on right now. I. If I'm doing a sneaker, I tend to wear a no show sock. But people are wearing the, the, you know, the high grandpa socks now. I mean, you got it. I think more importantly than what's happening with trends, please just wear what makes you feel good and what you will look at in pictures 20 years from now and not say, what in the world was I thinking? Why was I just blindly following trends and not being true to myself? Now, if a trend really captures you and you're excited about it, go for it. I'm not opposed to trends, but I'm definitely opposed to chasing trends. I would much rather you do things that are flattering for you and that reflect the style that you want to have. So you wear whatever socks you enjoy. And friends, we are not talking about rocket science and brain surgery here. We're talking about fashion and outfits. And I know it can be frustrating, and I know that you're here because you have some real challenges that we need to sort out together. And I hope we're doing that for you this week. But this gets to be fun. Getting dressed should be something that you enjoy. And so, again, just like we let go of a lot of rules around building a capsule wardrobe, I want you to let all the rules go around building outfits. I mean, I gave you some really great principles and tips and tricks that you can try, but I want you to be willing to take risks and make some mistakes and play dress up in your closet. And if something doesn't work out okay, don't wear it that way again. Next time, try something different. Mix it up a little bit. But if you are stuck in a rut, if you're bored with your outfits, if you're wearing the same thing every day and it doesn't feel like you anymore, you've got to be willing to do some experimenting. So can we agree to adopt this mindset? I just want you to play and have fun, Right? Remember when you were a kid, did you ever play dress up? You didn't care if you looked ridiculous. I feel like everybody has those photos of yourself as a child where you've got, like, lipstick smeared all over your face and you're wearing one of your family members high heels that are, you know, eight sizes too big for you and you just look ridiculous. But you're having fun and you're loving it. And I'm going to help you do this in a way that you don't look absolutely insane. But I want you to have fun. So let's play dress up together and start having some fun mixing up the pieces in your wardrobe.
