I'm gonna call myself out for just a second. It's really funny. When I first had the concept of incorporating these Q and A Thursday episodes into the weekly podcast rotation, the thought was that I would just give little bite sized tips to answer audience questions every week. And it turned out that the Q and A Thursday episodes are often some of the longest ones on the podcast. So I actually want to try to be a little bit more concise and make these bonus episodes shorter and sweeter for you so that you can just get some really quick actionable tips every single week that are going to help you solve your biggest style challenges. So friend, if you have a question that you want me to cover in an upcoming Q and A Thursday episode, I would absolutely love to hear it. Please head to herstylellc.com podcast. You can record a quick voice memo using the Speak Pipe plugin and I will be so happy to answer your question in a quick bite size upcoming episode right here on the podcast. And as I mentioned in the intro today we are covering a question that came in via email from our friend Trish. She said, hi Heather, I spent some time in 2024 weeding out clothes for my wardrobe that I didn't find an opportunity to wear. Very smart Trish. Just as a quick aside, if you haven't worn something in the last year, it's usually pretty safe to let that piece go. She also said, now that I have trimmed have this trimmed down closet, I came to realize how drab my color options are. There is so much black and navy blue for reference. I'm fair skinned with light brown hair, blue eyes, 5 foot 4 and have an average build at 130 pounds. So sometimes dark colors drown me out. I would really like to move towards lighter and brighter colors. Any suggestions on how to make that switch without purchasing a whole new wardrobe at once? Thanks, Trish. And Trish, I am so glad that you submitted this question for a Q and A Thursday episode because I have to tell you, it is one that I hear all the time, especially from clients who have received a personal color palette from me. They will often come back and say, I love these colors and I don't have any of them in my wardrobe. What is the best way to start incorporating them without breaking the bank? Right, because you definitely want to be thoughtful. I know you're here because you want to build a wardrobe that you love, but you also probably have the goal to do so in a way that is smart, savvy, and that doesn't cost you a fortune because nobody wants to go broke in an effort to look and feel your best. So I have five tips that I think will really help you start incorporating more color and ideally your best colors into your wardrobe over time. And that is the key. I'm so glad, Trish, that you mentioned without buying a whole new wardrobe at once. Because you've got to remember, friend, this style journey is a marathon. It's not a sprint. I almost just said that the backwards way. But yes, it's a marathon. You're going to want to look at this as a long term, ongoing project. It's not a one and done scenario and it's not something that you can really rush. It's incredibly helpful to slow down, take your time, and really thoughtfully complete the process of building out your dream wardrobe so it doesn't have to take forever, you know, in Her Style collective, I teach you how to do the whole process within just 90 days. But you don't want to rush out overnight and try to buy all the new things in your best colors. So what should you do? Well, I have, as I said, a handful of tips to help you get started. You can implement all of these or just pick and choose the ones that feel best for you. But the first thing that I suggest that you do is look at what's already on your shopping list. If you have taken the time in 2024 to audit your closet to get rid of the things that are no longer serving you, and you have a nicely cold wardrobe of pieces that you really do feel your best in color aside, then I would start by looking at where are the biggest gaps? What's already on your radar for pieces that you are hoping to bring in in the upcoming season? What I would suggest is that as you are buying new pieces, you start prioritizing some of your best colors, whether they are lighter blues to highlight your eyes, colors that reflect back to your hair color for some nice grounding pieces. Whatever it is that you think is going to move the needle in your overall wardrobe, buy the things that are already on your list and start choosing them in some better colors for you. Now, keep in mind, of course, if you aren't working from a curated color palette that you are bringing in colors that do work well together so that you can effortlessly, effortlessly mix and match all of those new pieces with your existing items. And it sounds like you have a lot of neutral colors in your wardrobe. Trish, you mentioned black and navy blue, so those should integrate really nicely with any lighter, brighter colors that you want to bring in next. So that is the first tip is to focus on what's already on your shopping list. Start there and prioritize your best colors when buying those new pieces to fill in the gaps. The second thing that you can do is to keep in mind that it's most important to wear your best colors close to your face. So if you have a lot of dark, heavy bottoms, say jeans, pants, skirts, even dresses, that kind of thing, what you might want to do is focus on investing in some lighter and brighter colors that you can wear near your face. So this could be layering pieces like jackets and cardigans. Maybe you want to invest in a couple of new blouses and better colors for you. You could even look for some inexpensive T shirts that you can wear every day effortlessly. Or you could invest in jewelry that you can wear by your face scarves. Anything that is near your face in those lighter, brighter colors is going to help to enhance the way that you appear in your clothing. And of course, lighten everything up and really bring out the best in your soft coloring and complexion. So that is the second thing that you can do is remember to wear your best colors near your face. Thirdly, you could focus on adding some inexpensive elements in your best colors. I'm talking costume jewelry, maybe a great hat for the spring and summer season, just some simple layering tanks like camisoles or muscle tanks. Think of some of those small, low cost, not necessarily cheap, but lower price point investment items for your overall wardrobe. Again, in your best colors just to lighten and brighten everything up. Bonus points if you can connect it to point number two and opt for things that you'll be wearing close to your face. All right. Number four is to prioritize pieces that will have the lowest cost per wear. This is different than the last tip because it may not be an inexpensive item, but it might be an item that you wear a lot on repeat. In one of my recent podcast episodes, which I will link up in the show Notes, I interviewed a couple members of her style collective and my client Neva actually shared this tip. When I asked her how she started incorporating some of her best colors in a strategic and economical way, she actually suggested that you look for things that you're going to be wearing a lot. For her, she invested in a pair of sneakers in one of her best colors that she didn't already have in her wardrobe, and she wears them almost every day. So if you have a piece like that that you are going to be wearing, often on repeat with lots of other things in your wardrobe, that is a fantastic opportunity to look for something in one of those better colors for you. So again, whether it's a pair of shoes that you're going to wear every day, a really great jacket or coat, or a great blazer, anything that would be maybe more of a layering or accent piece to any outfits that you have that would be a really smart investment. So think about the pieces that are going to have the lowest cost per wear and that you'll be putting on regular rotation in your wardrobe. My fifth and final tip is to scour end of season sales or maybe even look at some secondhand shops for good deals on your most flattering hues. If you have an assortment of colors that you're on the hunt for, why not take advantage of the end of winter sales that are happening right now or look for some gently used items, whether it's through an online site like Poshmark or the RealReal, or from a local consignment or thrift store wherever you want to get out and start hunting for some of those best colors? You probably know I'm not typically for bargain shopping because I think that's how we can often end up with a lot of pieces that we don't actually love that we only bought because it was a good price. So please continue to think about the things that are really going to move the needle in your wardrobe. Items that you have use for that you would have been willing to pay full price on. That's how you know you've actually gotten a really good deal. But take advantage of some sales when you're looking to scoop up some of your best colors. I think that's a really good opportunity to capitalize on some sales. So look for end of winter items that are marked down at some of your favorite stores. Or again, look for some second hand pieces that are in your best colors. That's a really good way to start adding in your best colors and saving a little bit of money in the process. All right, just to quickly recap, I want you to prioritize what's already on your shopping list. Rule number one. Secondly, remember that it's most important to wear your best colors near your face. So prioritize pieces on your upper half if you are going to be shopping and bringing in some new colors for your wardrobe. Thirdly, add some inexpensive elements in your best hues like costume jewelry, hats, layering pieces like tank tops, that kind of thing. 4. Opt for pieces that will have the lowest cost per wear. And finally, number five, scour end of season sales and secondhand shop for good deals on your most flattering hues. Trish, I hope that this was helpful for you. Episode 213 | 5 Ways to Integrate Color Into Your Wardrobe Over Time
Release Date: January 30, 2025
Welcome to HER Style Podcast, the ultimate destination for ambitious women aiming to build their dream wardrobe and exude confidence every day. In Episode 213, host Heather Riggs delves into a topic that resonates with many: how to thoughtfully and strategically incorporate color into your wardrobe without overwhelming your budget or closet. This episode is a treasure trove of insights, practical tips, and actionable advice designed to help you transition your wardrobe into a vibrant, cohesive collection that truly reflects your personal style.
Heather Riggs opens the episode by addressing a common dilemma: recognizing that your current wardrobe lacks the vibrant colors that complement your complexion and personal style. She acknowledges the frustration of owning a closet filled with items that, while practical, don’t make you feel excited or confident.
"When you realize you've been wearing the wrong colors for your complexion, or you simply uncover some exciting new options you can't wait to add into your collection, it's still just as important to be thoughtful and strategic about what you buy." (00:00)
Heather emphasizes the importance of avoiding impulse purchases and overspending, encouraging listeners to adopt a measured approach to integrating new colors into their existing wardrobe.
The episode centers around a question from a listener named Trish, who recently streamlined her wardrobe but found it overly dominated by dark colors like black and navy blue. Trish, a fair-skinned woman with light brown hair and blue eyes, expressed her desire to incorporate lighter and brighter colors without overhauling her entire wardrobe.
"I've spent some time in 2024 weeding out clothes for my wardrobe that I didn't find an opportunity to wear. Very smart Trish." (01:24)
Heather praises Trish's proactive approach and uses her situation as a springboard to offer five strategic tips for integrating color into one's wardrobe gradually and economically.
Heather advises listeners to start by examining their current shopping lists. After auditing your closet and removing items that no longer serve you, identify the gaps where new pieces could enhance your wardrobe.
"Start by looking at what's already on your shopping list. Prioritize your best colors when buying those new pieces to fill in the gaps." (04:30)
By focusing on items you already intend to purchase, you ensure that additions to your wardrobe are purposeful and aligned with your desired color palette. This approach prevents unnecessary spending and keeps your wardrobe cohesive.
The second tip highlights the importance of showcasing your best colors in areas that frame your face, enhancing your natural features.
"It's most important to wear your best colors close to your face. Everything that is near your face in those lighter, brighter colors is going to help to enhance the way that you appear in your clothing." (07:15)
Heather suggests investing in top-tier pieces like blouses, jackets, or even affordable T-shirts in your best colors. Accessories such as scarves or jewelry in vibrant hues can also serve this purpose, ensuring that your face is highlighted in flattering tones.
Incorporating color doesn’t always require a significant investment. Heather recommends adding smaller, budget-friendly items to introduce color without breaking the bank.
"Add some inexpensive elements in your best colors like costume jewelry, hats, layering pieces like tank tops, that kind of thing." (10:45)
Items such as statement jewelry, colorful hats, or versatile layering pieces can infuse your wardrobe with your best colors. These additions are not only affordable but also versatile, allowing you to mix and match with existing pieces seamlessly.
Heather emphasizes the value of investing in items that offer a high return in terms of usage and versatility.
"Opt for pieces that will have the lowest cost per wear." (15:00)
This means choosing items that you will wear frequently and in various settings. For example, a pair of colorful sneakers or a classic blazer in a vibrant hue can be worn repeatedly and styled in multiple ways, making them worthy investments despite a potentially higher upfront cost.
The final tip leverages the power of savvy shopping to find pieces in your best colors at reduced prices.
"Scour end of season sales or maybe even look at some secondhand shops for good deals on your most flattering hues." (19:30)
Heather encourages listeners to take advantage of sales and secondhand options to find quality items in their desired colors without overspending. This strategy not only saves money but also adds unique pieces to your wardrobe that align with your color palette.
Heather concludes the episode by summarizing the five tips:
She reinforces the importance of viewing this style journey as a marathon rather than a sprint, advocating for a thoughtful and paced approach to building a vibrant and cohesive wardrobe.
"This style journey is a marathon. It's not a sprint. You're going to want to look at this as a long term, ongoing project." (10:00)
Heather also highlights the benefits of joining the HER Style Collective, where listeners can receive personalized support, curated color palettes, and comprehensive modules to enhance their style journey.
In her closing remarks, Heather invites listeners to engage further by taking her Free 5-Min Personal Style Quiz and submitting questions for future Q&A episodes. She underscores the availability of ongoing support through the HER Style Collective and encourages continuous interaction via social media and her website.
"Friend, thank you so much for joining me today. I hope this was an insightful one for you. I'll meet you back here on Monday for another episode." (12:07)
