Welcome to her style podcast where we're all about empowering you to show up and get dressed every day with confidence. I'm your host, Heather Riggs, a 15 year and counting certified image consultant and color specialist, ready to build a wardrobe and a personal style you love. Let's get started.

Aussie friends and those of you you in the Southern hemisphere. I'm sorry, I know things are about to start cooling off for you and I won't speak for everyone up north, but I know most of my clients and I are beyond ready for warmer weather for sunshine and spring. It's been a very cold winter for many of us and I know. I am so excited to start thinking warm thoughts and planning ahead for my spring summer wardrobe. So I am really excited for this conversation today. And as I mentioned in the intro, designers had a lot of fun and freedom with fashion again. So we're actually seeing quite a big move away from the quiet luxury, all minimal looks and seeing a ton of variety this season. Designers like Prada and Valentino even ditched having a cohesive theme in their collections in favor of expressing individuality in each Runway look. So don't just take it from me. You have been given the top down green light from the fashion gurus to be yourself and just step into whatever suits you. This season, it's all about having fun, experimenting a little bit more and being more free and expressive in your fashion. I am going to divulge what's trending and some things that you might want to stock up on this season if you're in the market to do a little shopping. But now more than ever, I think because it is more of an anything goes mentality, it's going to be that much more important to pay attention to what speaks to you and to be more discerning and choosing trends that really fit in with your personal style. Style. It's great to take a step out of your comfort zone, but I don't want you to completely jump ship into someone else's style or to wearing what everyone else is wearing or what you think you should be wearing. So please always keep in mind your foundations. Think about what works best for your style, preferences for your figure, your features, and of course, your personal coloring. All right, so I'm going to do my best to help you navigate this along the way. I'll try to keep it concise because I know when we talk about trends there's a lot to cover. But again, my best advice is to hit pause if you haven't already. Go take my free 5 minute personal style quiz because I do want you to have a lot of clarity about which trends are gonna work best for you. Also, I highly recommend joining us over in Her Style community on Facebook. This is a completely free group because I'm gonna be sharing visual examples all week long of the trends that I'm talking about today so that you can get an idea of what they look like and some tips to incorporate them into your wardrobe. Really practical way. Just to make note of this, I am not releasing a separate trend report this time around, so please be sure to join us over in the free Her Style community on Facebook to get the visual companion to this episode. I'm going to do my best to describe things, but it's always easiest to see the looks for yourself. So come on over to the group, hang out with me this week, get tons of support with implementation, and I will see you in there. All right, today we're gonna be talking about a couple different segments of the trends. So we're gonna start with key pieces which are gonna be some of the individual items that were pretty dominating on the runways that you might wanna keep an eye out for as you're doing your spring summer wardrobe planning. We're also gonna talk about silhouettes and which ones might work best for your body type and your personal style goals. Then we're gonna look at Major themes. Spoiler alert. Boho is here to stay. And we'll talk about some other options for themes as well. We're gonna go over some prints to watch out for this season, color trends, and of course, some of the moment, accessories. So we do have a lot to cover. I'll probably go kind of fast, but again, for all the visual references, just join me in the free Facebook group and you will be good to go. All right, so first we're going to talk about some of the key pieces that you might want to bring into your wardrobe this season. And the first thing that really stood out to me in quite a few of the shows was fancy tanks. And what I mean by that is basic white muscle tanks. This happened another season before, but the difference this year or this spring rather, is that we're seeing plain tanks paired with really elegant or fancy bottoms. I'm talking tailored trousers, shimmering sequin skirts, or tanks that are just a little bit more embellished or fancy themselves. But if you are in the market for a plain, basic white tank top, now is going to be the time to stock up. And the way that we're seeing them styled, of course, is paired with more elegant pieces. So if you have a natural and elegant or a natural and dramatic style type, this one has your name written all over it. It's going to help you to show off your shoulders in a really beautiful way. And just remember, especially if you are going with a white tank top, to choose your best white. Most of us don't look awesome in a true bright white. So if you do need to switch to a softer ivory or a warmer bisque or sandstone color, make sure that you're choosing the best options for you. But white tanks are the way to go this season. Another thing that is really big right now are what I'm going to refer to as mixed bottoms. So you've probably heard of skorts, right? Which is skirt with shorts underneath. This season is all about scants. They are pants with a skirt layer over top or pants worn underneath a dress. Or we are also seeing a lot of pants with one leg long and the other leg short. So it's like a whole mix up of bottoms for your outfits. This is going to be really great for inverted triangle shapes so you can add a little bit more visual weight and some interest to your lower half. If you are a little bit broader up top, I think you can have some fun mixing things up on the bottom. And it's also going to be really great for you. If you have a creative and dramatic style type because of course this is something that's going noticeable. But anyone can experiment with this and I will show you some ways that you could have fun with it in your wardrobe this season. All right, the next key piece on the list is leggings, but more importantly, they're going to be layered this season underneath capri pants or a midi length dress. There will be some visual examples, of course, in the group as well, but you could try stir up leggings are still really big this season. Or we're also seeing a lot of the split floor front legging. So really slim fit with a split opening at the front, usually about maybe mid calf or ankle length down. I'll again, I'll show you tons of visuals, so just try to follow me here. But they're going to work really well layered under other pieces. So have some fun again mixing up your bottoms a little bit this season. And this is going to be great if you prefer to wear dresses, but you need the practicality of having something under them. If you're rolling around on the floor with your kids or running around at the park, this could be a great time to lean into some more practical way to level out your skirts and dresses this spring. Another trend that just will not quit is wearing lingerie as your basic pieces. So if you're feeling daring, if you want to show your alluring side this spring, this might be the time to finally try it. You could do a slip dress, corset tops, think lots of lace and delicate silks, satin, just really nice, soft, touchable fabrics showing as much skin as you feel comfortable with. Of course, you could always layer with a jacket or a button down for more coverage if you're not completely comfortable feeling that exposed. But we're still seeing a lot of lingerie outside of the bedroom. So again, if you have an alluring style and you are comfortable, now is the time to give it a try. All right. The last key piece that I saw a ton of this season on the runways is windbreakers. So if you are in the market for a new lightweight spring jacket, this could be the perfect time to stock up on a great windbreaker. There's a big overarching trend of high, low mixing, so everything is looking more elevated right now. What I would encourage you to do if you go with the windbreaker route is to pair it with something a little bit more elegant if you want to look the most current possible. So you might want to wear it with a silk skirt or an elegant maxi dress. Anything goes and I can't wait to show you this one. It does feel very approachable. But just remember, all of these kind of basic, more athletic type of pieces are going to be a little bit more elevated than what you might be thinking in your mind. All right, friend, let's move on to some of the major silhouette trends of the season. And when choosing silhouettes to try, it is important to keep in mind your body's natural shape, along with your style preferences. Of course, that's something we always want to bring in. So the first silhouette that is really prevalent right now are bubble hems. And these are exactly what they sound like. They're just kind of rounded, puffball hem lines. We're seeing them on dresses and skirts. This is perfect for you if you have a feminine and dramatic personal style. If you're not afraid to take a little bit more risks with your fashion, you could always do something a little bit more minimal. And this is a great silhouette. Again, if you have an inverted triangle shape, if you are broader in the shoulders, and you like to find ways to add some volume on your lower half just to create a really nice, balanced look, that could be a great fit for you. Now, also, if you have another body shape, but you're a little bit more self conscious about your hips, a bubble hem could be great for helping to camouflage that area. You might think it's going to draw attention there, but it's going to help your hips to look narrower by comparison. It can be a great way to cover and hide that spot in your body. So totally up to you if you want to give that a try. But it is a fun trend this season. Now, this is a fun one. Do you remember the paper doll effect that I talked about last fall? Anti gravity is the next iteration of that. So the paper doll effect was almost the appearance of clothes kind of hanging off or being detached from the body. This is definitely a Runway look. I didn't really see this at all in real life, but I also live in the suburbs, so keep that in mind. But this season, we are seeing almost like an anti gravity effect of hemlines, attached scarves, trains, things like that seemingly suspended in midair. So it almost looks like, if you think of that classic Marilyn Monroe image where she's standing over the subway grate and her dress just blows up and she's trying to hold it down. It almost is like that without the wind. Right? So it's hemlines that are designed to defy gravity. And maybe this was inspired by the Wicked era as well. But sometimes they it was more downplayed and just a little flipped up hemline on a trench coat as well. So there's all different variations of this. I will show you some options. It's probably not practical for most of us, but it's definitely a fun trend. It's something that was really occurring quite often on the Runway, and it could be perfect for special occasions or any time that you want your outfit to be more of a topic of conversation. The next one is a similar vein and a tube skirt. And this is a gorgeous silhouette from the Victorian era. It did make a really stunning comeback in quite a few Runway and couture shows. This is not a practical style whatsoever, but it is beautiful, and I thought it would be worth mentioning just if the occasion should arise. This would be a great time to try it. You might need to search more for full or circle skirts or have one custom made, because I'm not really seeing them in retail yet. But this is a trend that we might want to keep an eye on this this season. Now, the last one is going to be slim fit pants, so if you are not much of a dress or skirt person, this is probably music to your ears. It's sister to the skinny jean and slim fit pants are a fantastic silhouette, especially for rectangle body shapes. If you're just long and lean, this is going to be a really nice, natural pant silhouette for you. And it's also perfect if you have a classic or elegant personal style type. Or if you're looking for some good workwear for the season, you might want to consider bringing a pair of slim fit pants into your collection. All right, moving right along away from silhouettes, let's turn our talk over to some of the major themes of the spring. The first, as I teased earlier in the episode, is boho style. This one's been around for a minute, but bohemian looks are definitely here to stay. And there's lots of different iterations of this. If you want to look for natural fibers, some really soft, fluid fabrics, and just an altogether earthy feel, you might want to stock up on some billowy blouses. Fringe is still really big, and I'm going to circle back on that one in just a minute. Lace is also a great option for this trend. You know the drill. You know what boho looks like. Just think free, expressive, Woodstock inspired, of course, lots of natural, earthy elements, and then adding in some romantic touches for the season as well. The next one is kind of a two in one. I think they really do sort of go together. The first is all American prep. We saw lots of red, white, and blue literal American flags on things like Ralph Lauren, of course, is kind of that quintessential all American type of fashion label. So there's definitely going to be an element of that this season, along with nautical knits, which I think has a really similar preppy kind of vibe. Just think about what you would wear for a summer on Nantucket. Right. And lots of sailor stripes, coastal living kind of trends. That's going to still be really big this year. So definitely lean in if that suits your personal style. The next one is romance everything. And there's really two tracks that I'm seeing of this on the runways. One is dark romance, and this is going to be lots of feminine lace and ruffles, but with a little bit more of a gothic twist. So think really light, delicate, romantic pieces, but with the heaviness of all black, dramatic dark makeup. So, again, kind of that dark romance sort of vibe. And then the second track of the romance thing is almost like historical romance. I already mentioned the use of hoop skirts this season, but this wasn't the only nod to historical romance. Designers like Valentino really did transport us to another time with lots of intricate lace, ruffled collars, lavish embroidery. Again, I'll show tons of visual examples of different ways that you could do this, but romance is huge. So think feminine lace, ruffles, all kinds of girly, frilly details in either application to really suit your style. The next trend that I want to talk about, it has a similar vein, but it's probably better suited to people who have more of an athleisure style as well, more natural elements, and it's ballet core. There were ballerina touches all over the runways, from tutu inspired skirts to unitards paired with leg warmers. So take your ballet wear beyond the bar this season. And I do really love this. For anyone who has a natural and feminine style, this is kind of a great way to marry the two together. All right, the next one is upgraded athleisure. Right? So it's not all fancy frills and dramatic silhouettes. You can still absolutely lean into athleisure. It's still very popular, but like everything this season, it's definitely getting an upgrade. So you might want to venture out of your matching sets for the spring and start elevating your basic athletic wear with dressier counterparts. Right. We talked about wearing fancy tanks, so your white basic muscle tanks with a more embellished and formal bottom. Or you might want to just simply invest in higher Quality, more tailored, athletic pieces just to really, again, take your wardrobe up a notch. Everything is looking a little bit more polished and luxe this season. And the last theme that I want to point out is utility gear. Utility jackets, olive green tones, and utilitarian Bermuda shorts are just a few of the different trends that I was spotting on the runways. And of course, you definitely want to keep the high, low mix in mind here as well, mixing utility elements with some of those more elegant, high end pieces. Not that you have to spend thousands of dollars on your wardrobe, but it's definitely the time to think about pairing some of those more basic, practical elements with some more luxury inspired pieces. All right, let's move on to fabrics. And some of the main ones that we're seeing are tulle. I talked about the cotton candy effect last spring. It's similar to that. We're still seeing lots of transparent, almost sheer, spun or kind of whipped styling of these elements like tulle and organza. And it's a very delicate, beautiful look. You could definitely make it more dramatic if you wanted to, but it is really perfect for feminine style types. Another one is tweed, and this is a great classic option. You could always go with a simple black tweed tweed blazer and a mini skirt if you want to keep your outfit feeling more chic and serious. Or you could lighten things up with a soft pastel suit in one of spring's IT colors, which I will be revealing shortly as well. But tweed separates and suiting is still really popular for this season. Another fun one is some clustered crochet. And this is going to be pieces like cardigans or outerwear spun into floral appliques and uniquely clustered patterns. So think crochet, but a little bit bigger, a little bit more embellished. And I do love this. For natural and creative style types. The next one is going to be textured fringe. I do think fringe was starting to feel a little played out. We've been seeing it season after season until now, because it's definitely getting a little bit of a twist. Literally, if you think of thick, textured and twisted variations on this season's runways. Again, I'll show you some visuals of this. But textured fringe, Fringe is going to be really big. You could opt for it in a dress, a skirt. You could pair it under some good basics if you want to make it feel more practical. But it is a fun addition to any dramatic outfit. And the last fabric that is really something that you might want to stock up on this season is going to be brocade There are tons of rich ornamental jewel tones. So think kind of elegant maximalism. We're definitely, as I said, moving away from the quiet luxury to richer textures and print combinations, color combos, things like that. So brocade fabrics are going to be really big right now. It's a great time to stock up on a good blazer or pant in a beautiful brocade. All right, the next thing I want to cover with you is prints. So there's a couple big trends right now. Picnic plaids are this season's version of countryside plaid, which we saw a lot of in the fall. So we're just lightening things up and you can literally dress like a picnic table, but of course, in the chicest ways. And I will help you figure out how to do that this week in the private Facebook community. We're also seeing lots of vertical stripes. Again, we talked about the nautical stripes. Verticals are really big right now. Polka dots are huge this season we're going to be seeing them everywhere. And then tons of wallpaper florals. So again, we'll follow up with all the visuals on that. But those are going to be some prints to watch for right now. And let's quickly review the color trends. Soft tints, pastels. Really big. I know that's not surprising. We often see lots of lighter colors prop up this time of year as we're all ready to lighten and freshen up our wardrobes. But pastels are so big, and what's great is there's tons of variety. So if you are concerned about looking washed out in pastels, make sure that you choose the right temperature for your skin tone. Whether you want to go for a cool whisper pink or a neutral butter yellow or a warm lime cream, there's tons of options for you. Of course, icy blues are also really big. And lavenders. Take your pick, whatever you want to wear. Just make sure that you're choosing pastels that feel great for you, and you can always pair them with darker colors as well if you don't feel your best in those soft tones. Some other options for you are going to be Crocus, which is one of Pantone's trend picks. I would also describe this as more of an orchid color. Again, I'll show you some ideas of what that can look like inside the group. We're also seeing a lot of medium value blues, so things like cerulean, periwinkle, sky blue, all of those iterations are really popular right now. And then a couple other color trends to watch out for are Going to be a vibrant marigold, kind of a citrusy color. I'll show you examples of that. Fern green is really popular right now. And then of course we still have some beautiful chocolate brown tones and pantones. 2025 Color of the Year Mocha mousse is also going to be really big this season, so take your pick. There's tons of variety and I will help you better navigate which ones are going to be right for you inside our private Facebook group this week as well. And let's just talk about a couple of big accessory trends that I'm seeing. The first thing is bedazzled everything bags jackets. Like the more bedazzled jewel encrusted sticker adorned items, the better. Right now again we're seeing more maximalist kind of trends coming about. So this is a big one. Also, I'm really excited about this one. I'm seeing tons of long layered necklaces. I feel like we've been seeing lots of short, delicate jewelry lately, but long layered necklaces are definitely big. So if you're ready to switch it up, that could be a good move for you. And then in terms of shoes, I think the biggest trend for this season is going to be peep toe shoes. So I hope this was helpful. I feel like I talked a mile a minute but we had so much.
