Before we dive dive into today's wardrobe styling tips, I just want to share that I know the struggle of having a closet full of clothes and still feeling like you have nothing to wear. I know it's the worst. And whether you have been shopping impulsively and just not thinking about what you truly need or you've been so busy with life that your wardrobe hasn't been able to keep up with the trends and the transitions in your schedule, I know it can be so frustrating and guilt ridding to stand in front of a jam packed closet with no idea where to start and how to get dressed in the morning. Maybe you have items with the tags still on them and pieces that you've completely forgotten about or haven't worn in years. Clothing that you once loved and felt so excited to put on but now feel uninspired by or frankly dated in. Or you might have some gorgeous clothing and accessories in your closet, but in the everyday hurry or in your self doubt, you keep defaulting to the same basic outfits on repeat. Perhaps your pieces don't fit you as well as they once did and you're not sure how to style your items in the most current way. Or I see this one a lot. You bought an outfit and you always wear it as that outfit and you've never considered breaking it up into separates and styling the individual pieces in some new and different ways. You might feel uncertain about which colors or prints work together in your closet or which silhouettes to pair up and how to create the most flattering looks with what you have. There are so many reasons we don't fully utilize what we own and today I really want to help you start fixing this problem. I want to help you feel inspired and excited to get dressed again, and I want you to be able to put outfits together with confidence and to see the possibilities within the walls, shelves and hooks of your closet. So I want to help you do a lot with a little and no longer feel like you need to burn it all down and buy a whole new wardrobe. So first, let's talk about a few ways that you can really maximizing what's in your closet right away. The first thing that I encourage you to do is celebrate your style. I cannot tell you how important it is to get clear on how you want to look and feel in your clothing and think about what story you want to tell when you get dressed. The way that we show up in the world tells a story and gives people an impression of who we are. So I want you to think about what you're inspired by right now. What styles and colors and textures and prints and trends are really moving you to feel excited about the possibility of getting dressed and think about how you would describe your personal style. If you haven't already, definitely pause this episode right now and go take my free 5 minute personal style quiz. You can find it at herstylellc.comquiz to really start honing in on your signature style. This is step one. No matter where you are in your style journey, you always want to be crystal clear in your personal style or come back and revisit it from season to season just to make sure that you're keeping a pulse on it and that nothing has changed significantly since the last time you went to shop and get dressed for the season. I think it's so smart to curate a style mood board on Pinterest that you can refer back to as you are putting outfits together, doing your shopping, planning your wardrobe for this season, all of those things. Before you can start creating the best possible outfits, you gotta be clear on your vision. So we always want to start with your style. And the first thing I want you to do is figure out what your personal style is. Round up some outfit inspiration that's exciting for you and that you think could work for your lifestyle and then see which outfits you can recreate from that style mood board with the pieces that you already own. This might surprise you in a really big way. You might have so many more things that you can work with to create those outfits and you don't need to do as much shopping as you originally thought. Now, of course, you always want to adapt the looks that you're seeing online to work best for your lifestyle and to flatter you, but that is a conversation for another episode. We have talked about that before, so I'll link up some in the show notes and of course I'll give you an opportunity later in this episode to dive deeper with me on that specifically. All right, the second thing that you can start doing to better utilize what's in your wardrobe is to think about flaunting your features. I would venture to guess that this isn't always your first question when you're standing in front of your closet and looking at what pieces you're going to pull out for the day. But when you go to get dressed, it's really helpful to consider which physical attributes you want to highlight that day. Maybe you're having a great hair day and it could be a good idea to repeat your hair color in your pants and shoes. Or you could reach for the textured sweater that echoes your hair's natural waves. This is a new way to think about putting outfits together, and I think it's really going to help you break out of the outfit repetition cycle if you are constantly reaching for the same pieces day in and day out. Instead of grabbing your Go to T shirt and the only pair of jeans that fit in your closet right now, try starting with an area of your body or your appearance that you want to celebrate for the day and then think about which items can help you do that best. It might get you reaching for some other things that you haven't worn in a while. The third thing that you can do is combine your colors. I know it can feel really scary to think about putting new color combinations together, especially if neutrals are your love language and an all black wardrobe really falls in in your comfort zone. But one of the best ways to mix and match what you already own is to try new things and just see what happens. Instead of pairing your navy blue blouse with a classic blue jean, what would happen if you slipped on the dark teal dress pants and went with an analogous look instead? And analogous simply means colors that are adjacent to each other on the color wheel. So in this case they would be blue and blue green. If you have a really dramatic style, but you typically pair even your boldest colors with other neutrals, it might be time time to have some more fun and try a complementary matchup or colors opposite one another on the color wheel. Instead, have a dress up day. See what works together. Try on some things that you might have never considered before because you never know what is going to surprise and delight you. All right, the Fourth tip that I have for you today is to get in there and utilize the unworn. Before you rush out to buy a new thing, take a peek through your closet. Is there something that you haven't worn in a while or maybe ever before might still have the tags on it that could work for this upcoming occasion? A great story that just happened very recently with one of our collective members is that her and her husband were invited to a function for his work and they were told that the only requirement was they had to wear blue and it was sort of a formal cocktail type event. So she debated buying a new dress or renting something for this one off occasion. But thankfully, in completing the rest of her closet audit, she discovered that she had the perfect dark teal dress that she'd worn maybe a decade prior and she'd forgotten all about it. So she simply added some beautiful blue jewelry and she looked absolutely stunning for her date night without spending a fortune or even having to go to the trouble of renting a new piece. So it might be time to get in there and explore. Maybe do your closet audit and see what hidden gems you discover that you've been neglecting to wear. Challenge yourself to cut the tags and wear that irresistibly beautiful or on sale item that you just had to have and then never actually brought into your day to day life. Revisit and modernize the pieces that you've loved years ago and then maybe got tired of or felt played out in. Sometimes what you own just needs a second chance and a second life. So get in there and get creative about how you can bring those pieces into your rotation this month or maybe even in the week ahead. All right, the last thing that I want to recommend to you is that you finish your fits often. I think that we feel really dissatisfied with what we own. Not because we don't have great items, but because we're not styling them in the best possible ways. Maybe you have a beautiful linen dress that you love, but you rarely wear it because it's always wrinkled when you go to grab it off the hanger. Maybe you need to take five minutes this week to steam it and get it outfit ready, or maybe you feel ho hum in your basic leggings and T shirts. But what if you added some simple everyday jewelry and threw a pretty cardigan over your shoulders and then slipped on your vibrant sneakers to add a welcome pop of color? You might be feeling lackluster about what's in your wardrobe simply because you're not finishing your outfits with the little Details that go a long way to make up a well styled look. Now, I know this advice is all well and good. Hopefully you're feeling inspired to revisit your wardrobe with these five tips in mind and get mixing and matching in new and interesting ways. But you might find yourself still scratching your head and thinking, okay, this sounds great Heather, but how? How do I do this? How do I get clear about my personal style, especially if I want to look one way but my lifestyle demands something completely different? How do I flaunt my features when I'm feeling self conscious and I'm confused about all the advice out there about dressing for my body? How do I combine colors when I don't know which ones look good on me or which ones look good together? I don't want to look like a crazy person when I leave my house or I haven't cut the tags off these clothes for a reason. I don't know what to wear them with or how to make them look current. There is a real genuine challenge or roadblock stopping me from bringing them into my everyday outfits and I really need some help and a second opinion on what to do with them. Or I just need some inspiration and ideas to finish my outfits and I want some help up leveling my style. If that is you friend, if you're asking any of these questions, if you have a lot more doubts then excitement around the possibility of mixing up what's in your wardrobe, then I'm here to help. And I am so excited to announce that I'm going to be hosting another all new live event starting in exactly four weeks from today. HER Style Podcast | Episode 223: "Shop Your Closet: How to Fall Back in Love with What You Already Own"
Release Date: March 10, 2025
In Episode 223 of the HER Style Podcast, host Heather Riggs delves into the common frustration of having a closet bursting with clothes yet feeling like there's nothing to wear. Aimed at empowering women to maximize their existing wardrobe, Heather shares actionable strategies to rekindle excitement for personal style without the need for new shopping trips.
Heather opens the discussion by addressing the pervasive issue of wardrobe overwhelm. She emphasizes the importance of celebrating your personal style as the foundational step to revitalizing your closet.
"I cannot tell you how important it is to get clear on how you want to look and feel in your clothing and think about what story you want to tell when you get dressed." (01:00)
To achieve this, Heather recommends creating a style mood board on platforms like Pinterest. This visual representation helps in clarifying your aesthetic preferences and serves as a reference when assembling outfits.
"Curate a style mood board on Pinterest that you can refer back to as you are putting outfits together, doing your shopping, planning your wardrobe for this season, all of those things." (01:50)
She also introduces her Free 5-Minute Personal Style Quiz, encouraging listeners to pinpoint their signature style, which is crucial for making informed wardrobe choices.
Understanding and highlighting your unique physical attributes can transform how you approach dressing each day. Heather advises listeners to flaunt their features by selecting clothing that accentuates their best traits.
"When you go to get dressed, it's really helpful to consider which physical attributes you want to highlight that day." (05:10)
For instance, if you have a great hair day, choosing accessories or clothing that complements your hair color can create a harmonious and flattering look. This approach not only breaks the cycle of repetitive outfits but also instills confidence in your daily attire choices.
Color coordination is a powerful tool in enhancing your wardrobe versatility. Heather encourages experimenting with new color combinations to breathe fresh life into existing pieces.
"Instead of pairing your navy blue blouse with a classic blue jean, what would happen if you slipped on the dark teal dress pants and went with an analogous look instead?" (07:15)
She explains the concept of analogous colors—colors adjacent to each other on the color wheel—and suggests stepping out of your comfort zone to try complementary color pairings. This experimentation can lead to unexpected and delightful outfit possibilities, making your wardrobe feel new and exciting again.
Before deciding to purchase new items, Heather advises conducting a thorough closet audit to uncover hidden gems that have been overlooked or forgotten.
"Maybe you have the perfect dark teal dress that you'd worn maybe a decade prior and you'd forgotten all about it." (09:45)
She shares a relatable story of a listener who found a decade-old dress in her closet, perfect for a special event, highlighting how rediscovering unworn items can save money and reduce the need for additional shopping.
The final tip focuses on the details that elevate an outfit from basic to polished. Heather stresses the importance of finishing your outfits with accessories and proper garment care.
"Maybe you have a beautiful linen dress that you love, but you rarely wear it because it's always wrinkled when you go to grab it off the hanger." (11:20)
Simple additions like jewelry, cardigans, or vibrant sneakers can transform a lackluster outfit into a stylish ensemble. Additionally, taking the time to care for your clothes ensures they remain in wearable condition, making it easier to incorporate them into your daily looks.
Acknowledging that implementing these strategies can be challenging, Heather announces an exciting opportunity for listeners seeking further guidance. She introduces the Five-Day Shop Your Closet Challenge, a free virtual event scheduled from April 7th through the 11th.
"Join me from April 7th through the 11th for the five-day free shop your Closet Challenge." (11:50)
During this event, participants will receive daily training sessions, real-life examples, and live Q&A segments to deepen their understanding and application of the tips discussed in the episode. Heather promises personalized support to help attendees transform their wardrobe usage and build confidence in their styling choices.
Heather wraps up the episode by reaffirming her commitment to helping women embrace their existing wardrobes and rediscover their personal style. She encourages listeners to take proactive steps, such as participating in her upcoming challenge and utilizing available resources like her personal style quiz.
"We are going to have the best week transforming your outfits and finally feeling good in what you own again. I can't wait to see you there." (12:10)
