Welcome to her Style podcast where we're all about empowering you to show up and get dressed every day with confidence. Heather Riggs
I don't care where you are on your style journey. I mean, of course I care where you are on your style journey. But what I mean is that no matter where you are on your style journey, pinpointing your personal style is the most important first step. Or at the very least, I think it's a step worth revisiting every so often before you buy a single piece of clothing or you start diving into your next closet audit. Having a dialed in signature style is like being armed and ready for the adventure with a clear roadmap to follow. I think that without a sense of your style identity and what resonates with you, getting dressed can feel like a constant guessing game. You might find yourself trying on five different outfits every morning, or buying things you thought you liked or that you liked in the moment, only to leave them hanging in your closet with the tags still on forever. When you haven't defined your signature style, it's easy to dress for the trends or dress for other people's expectations and then feeling like something is off or missing. You might see a really cute outfit on someone else and try to copy it, but it doesn't quite translate the same way for you. Once you do figure out your style, everything else is going to get so much easier. You can start to build a wardrobe that actually supports your life, and you know which pieces to say yes and no to. It's like having those guardrails in place that you can keep coming back and see what really lines up with your style and how you want to show up. And you can start going to every activity, whether it's swim club with your kids or zoom meetings for the office or dinner dates with your spouse. You can start looking and feeling like the best version of you, no matter where you go. And I think that the most exciting part is that your personal style isn't about wearing what's in. It's about identifying what's you. And so no matter the trends and the fluctuation in style, you'll have that really clear compass and framework for filtering through all of the noise. And then when you do that, I think that you're going to feel a lot more confident. You're going to make a stronger first impression, and you're going to feel like your closet finally reflects who you are. And if you want to embrace a couple of trends for the season, then you're going to have that clear filter to help you figure out which ones are right for you. So you might be thinking, okay, yes, I know that I need to pinpoint my signature style, but how? I have no idea what I like or what works for me. I hear this all the time from women in our community. They have no idea what their personal style is. So I'm going to give you step one today, and this is the perfect starting point for you. Or if you feel like you're falling into a wardrobe rut, if you've done a lot of work on your closet audit over the last year or more and you're feeling like things are kind of getting stale, I want you to come back to this step at any point. And it's taking my free personal style quiz. Even if you've already done this before, maybe it's been a couple of years, you might want to come back and revisit it again. This quiz takes just a few minutes to complete, and it is going to give you your top three signature style types based on not only your visual preferences, which are vitally important, but it also factors in things like your personality, your goals, your priorities, and how you spend your time. And all of the different aspects that we can very easily overlook. We often think our signature style is only about what we like to look at, and that is obviously very important. But it's only one piece of the full puzzle because we also need to keep in mind what works for our real lives as well. So this is just the first step. The most important part is then taking those results and coming up with your own unique blend of them. But having this starting point, or just a couple of key words that describe your signature style is going to be so incredibly helpful when you are shopping, planning your outfits, or even looking for inspiration in the future. So if you are ready to finally understand your personal style, I want you to go take my free quiz. You can find it at herstylellc.com quiz it's completely free. It has been tested and proven. We've had more than 22,000 women complete this quiz, and I've heard that they've never felt so seen their results fit them to a T and that it's given them the needed clarity and direction to keep moving forward on their style journeys. So if you are feeling stuck or you don't know where to begin, this is the place. And I am so committed to helping you figure out this first step. I also want to do a little troubleshooting today so that if anything about your quiz results doesn't feel right, you know what to do because it should 100% feel like you. And so the first thing I want to point out is that there are just seven key style types. I explained every single one of them in episode number two of her style podcast. I'll link that up for you in the show notes in case you want to listen to it next. Or you can scroll all the way back in the podcast feed and find that episode. It's one of the first ones, and I think it's an oldie but a goodie. Still, very true to today. And while the style quiz is going to give you a strong foundation or starting point, you might feel drawn to elements of another style type that didn't come up in your results. Or you might interpret a word differently than someone else would. So let's say, and I hear this one from time to time, maybe your top result is feminine. And in hearing that word, you might picture pink dresses, lots of big bows and floral elements out the wazoo. Maybe you're picturing like Elle woods from Legally Blonde, but that's not the only way to express femininity. For you, having a feminine quality to your style could just mean having soft, touchable hairstyles or delicate jewelry or maybe flowy fabrics or luminous makeup. Feminine doesn't have to mean frilly. So I want you to dig a little bit deeper and explore what those words could mean for you. That is why I always recommend this simple next step. So part one is taking the quiz. After you've done that, I want you to start collecting some inspiration. So I have already put together a whole bunch of style mood boards that you can peek through just to get an idea. Keep in mind the mood boards for the top seven types are very stereotypical. It's like the only quality of a natural board is natural style. The only images in the feminine board are all very feminine. So again, that doesn't mean that's necessarily all of what you are. You have three results for a reason, and you've got to figure out how to blend them together to create the right balance for you. So you can also look through the combination boards that I've started. For example, maybe you want to look at the feminine and natural board or the classic and creative board and just get an idea of how you can start bringing them together. It'll help you really visualize how the different style types of can work together. But either way, you can also go off on your own and find your own outfit inspiration and ideas. I want you to start developing your own style mood board, though this is a really critical next step. You can pin outfits directly from within Pinterest. You could save Instagram posts from your favorite influencers. You could snap photos of yourself in outfits that you really love. I also encourage my clients sometimes to explain expand beyond fashion, especially if you're feeling stuck. You might want to save some artwork that you love or interior design spaces that draw you in. Maybe look for color schemes that excite you. We can find inspiration anywhere, but you basically want to accumulate a good number of images that relate to your style words and that resonate with you. And then what you can do after you've kind of built this out and just let yourself dream and play and explore. There's no right or wrong here. You can always pare it down later. I want you to take a more of a bird's eye view. So kind of zoom out on your style mood board and start looking for themes or patterns in color, shape, texture, mood, different qualities. It might give you some insight if you're drawn to minimalistic qualities or lines or earth tones as opposed to bright, saturated colors. Or maybe you notice that you are really attracted to a lot of statement earrings and jewelry or more tailored and structured fit. I want you to just play in this initial phase and let yourself explore and dream and be creative and go with your intuition. Right? So don't just limit yourself to your quiz result. You can feel free to expand a little bit as you're kind of getting started with all of this. And remember that your mood board might shape up to be something that's a little bit more unexpected, and it can also change from season to season or based on your stage of life. So I love revisiting this process about twice a year to keep tabs on how my style preferences might have shifted. And most importantly, remember, you don't have to fit into a stereotypical definition of these style types. Classic might have been your number one result, but you could be classic with an edge or you might have received the natural style type. So maybe you like really casual, easygoing elements, but you also have a flair for the dramatic and you like to add some splashes of excitement to your outfit. What matters is that your combination feels aligned and exciting for you. If it doesn't, let me know. We will troubleshoot this and figure it out together. But once you have a sense of your top style words, I want you to start using them right away. Ask yourself each morning when you're getting ready, how can I express one or more of my style words? In today's outfit, I want you to choose accessories, makeup and even your hairstyle with your signature style in mind. And then also you can think about applying your style even in the casual moments of your day. If you're running out to do some errands, or if you're hanging out at the house with your family or working from your laptop, think about how you can incorporate and infuse your style into all of the elements of your day. If you received a quiz result of creative or dramatic, maybe that means playful to you and it looks like slipping into a fun pair of sneakers or adding an unexpected pop of color in your T shirt. Or if you landed on classic or elegant as one of your key styles, maybe to you that means high end or powerful. And so you might choose to finish your looks with a structured blazer or a sleek bun, even if you're just wearing jeans for the day. The point is to figure out what feels like you and makes you excited about the art of getting dressed. And also to stop saving your personal style for special occasions. I want to encourage you to let it show up everywhere and celebrate who you are in everything that you do. Remember your personal style is a way to tell an accurate story about who you are, so you do want to make sure that it lines up with your values, your preferences, and of course, how you spend your time.
