Hey friend, I see you there staring at a full closet, feeling overwhelmed with all the options of what to wear. But guess what? You don't have to spend hours calling your closet to get ready faster in the morning, although that can certainly help. But before you resort to ransacking your wardrobe, turn up your AirPods and listen in for a simple three step framework to help you get out of analysis paralysis and make a confident step Styling Decisions Fast if time is of the essence and you're ready to stop feeling frazzled every morning when you face your wardrobe, this episode is going to take you from I have no idea what to wear to I am dressed and out the door in five minutes or less. Welcome to Her Style Podcast where we're all about empowering you to show up and get dressed every day with confidence. I'm your host Heather Riggs, a 15 year and counting certified image consultant and color specialist, ready to build a wardrobe and a personal style you love. Let's get started. Do you know what I realized and what spurred on this episode is that I have given you many an outfit planning tip over the history of this podcast. I've walked you through creating an outfit library for yourself on Pinterest, and I've recommended that you come up with a collection of, in a pinch, outfit options that you can have at the ready. We've talked about essential factors to think about when choosing your look for the day, and at least a handful or so of other ideas to help you get ready faster and more confidently in the morning. But I realized a lot of this advice presumes that you know where to start. And some days you just don't. You are overwhelmed by your options or you're constantly defaulting to the same starter pieces, whether you're in a hurry or you're just in an outfit rut. And so if getting dressed feels like a daily battle with decision fatigue or like you're running on autopilot, then I think this episode is really going to help you move out of that space and feel so much more confident and intentional about putting your outfits together. Because I want to help you completely eliminate the stress and the uncertainty of picking your outfits in the morning. And so the first step I have a three step framework to help you today, and the first step, especially if you don't even know where to begin, is to ask the magic question, what's my top priority today? And if you take anything away from this episode, please let it be this, because I have a feeling it is going to change the game for you. Asking this question, which again is what's my top priority today? Is going to take the focus off of your wardrobe and put it onto your personal needs instead. It's going to automatically eliminate a lot of the options that are in your closet. It's going to get you out of analysis paralysis and it will move you into action mode. Because often the first decision is the hardest. At least it is for me on those days. And yes, I have had many of them throughout my life where I'm standing in front of a closet full of clothes and I have no idea what to wear. So again, the magic question is, please write this down. It's what's my top priority today? And your answer to this one question will guide the rest of your outfit. And no, I'm not just going to leave you with that. Your answer could be anything. But I also feel like there are some common priorities that you might want to consider. So I'm going to give you six quick options that you can choose from. If you do need a little bit more help in that starting point. And you can think of these like a menu, you might want to have more than one and you absolutely can. But you only need to pick one priority for the day in order to get the ball rolling. So the first option is comfort. If that's what you need today. If you are feeling like you just want to wrap yourself up in a hug, then start with your comfiest piece. Maybe it's a pair of relaxed pants, your favorite vintage T shirt, or a soft knit dress. Whatever makes you feel amazing. Sometimes comfort is key and that's okay if it's your top priority for today. The second option could be expressing your personal style. If you are heading out somewhere and it's important that you represent yourself in a certain way. It could be a job interview, an outing with a new group of friends, maybe a first date. It doesn't even have to be a high pressure event. Maybe you're working on up leveling your style or you just took my free personal style quiz and you're excited to start prioritizing your style preferences in your outfits, no matter what the occasion is. Or you might be ready to get out of an outfit rut. You're craving more creativity when you go to get dressed and you want to put together a look for the day that feels like you if this is the case. If expressing your style is the top priority, then I want you to reach for the first piece you see that reflects your signature style. I always love turning to my style mood board that I put together on Pinterest when I need a little inspiration, too. So you can always look to that if you have any style inspiration that you could pull from just to get your outfit going. The third option is the weather. This one's definitely the most practical. It's not super glamorous, but I think it's always worth considering. So if it's raining out, maybe you're going to start building your outfit around your favorite waterproof shoes. That might mean that you're only going to wear a certain type of pant or skirt that works with those shoes. Or maybe it means that you're going to want to make sure that you wear something that you can layer with a jacket. If it's 90 degrees out and you know you're going to be hot, you're running around today. Maybe you want to choose a breezy top or a lightweight dress as your base. If the weather is a big factor in your day, I want you to go ahead and let the forecast guide you. Let that be your first starting point. The fourth option is body confidence. Some days it's more important than others to feel confident and comfortable in your skin. And if that's today, then think about how you can best highlight one of your favorite features. If you feel great about your waist, your neckline, your legs, start with a piece of clothing or an accessory that helps you show that off so that you can feel most empowered as you move about your day. The fifth option is color. If color inspires you or if it motivates you, start with one of your favorite hues. Or you can use some basic color psychology as a starting point to set the mood for your day. Maybe it's a teal blouse that excites you or a blush pink dress that brings out your glow. I like to use color as a starting point for my outfit. Quite often I will think about which options from my color palette I haven't worn in a while. Or I'll think about what communicates the effect that I want to create with whatever it is that I'm doing and however you want to go about it. Your best hues are always a wonderful starting point for your outfit. All right, the last one, number six, is the occasion. And this is probably going to be your top priority most days, but you can always let your calendar lead the way. If you have a work meeting, errands, a play date, dinner out, just pick the first piece that fits with your plans and then you can build the rest of your look from there. Again, you don't need to check all six of these boxes, just pick one that feels most relevant to you and then use that to narrow down your choices and bring you to your outfit's anchor piece or starting point. If you have a different priority than the ones that I mentioned here, that's great too. Whatever gets you moving and shaking in the morning, just think about what is most important for you in your day. And this is going to bring us to step number two. Once you have chosen your most important thing and selected your anchor piece, you're going to build the rest of your outfit using your style foundations. I've talked about this on the podcast before, so I'll link up some episodes, but the basic gist of your style foundations are that it reflects your signature style, that it flatters your figure, and that it works with harmonious colors that work well for you. So I want to run through these three quick checkpoints just to help you complete your look. And you're going to want to keep these in mind and use them as you're putting everything else together. So the first, as we've already talked about, is infusing your signature style. Think about what's one element you can add to your outfit that reflects your personal style preferences. Even if this wasn't your top priority for the day, I think it's so important to make sure that you are dressing authentically as best you can. So if you love romantic styles, maybe you're going to opt for a soft fabric or some flowy silhouettes. If you love classic looks, it could be a structured piece or clean lines. If you're creative, then you might want to throw in an unexpected accessory or a unique texture. This does not need to be over the top and you don't need to over analyze it. It could be a subtle detail, but it's what makes the outfit feel most like you. All right, the second part of this, I guess we'll call this step 2B, is flattering your figure. And again, I don't want you to overthink it or over complicate it. Just make sure that your outfit has some good overall balance and that it creates a flattering silhouette. If possible, choose one feature to highlight that you really love or feel most secure about. You might want to define your waist by adding a belt or tucking in your top. It doesn't need to be perfect, it just needs to feel good on your body. Confidence is key here, so make sure that you feel good in your clothing before you leave the house. And to see the last piece of this second step is choosing harmonious colors so you're going to want to probably stick to two to three colors that work well together and that ideally complement your personal coloring. If you have one, definitely make sure that you're choosing options from your personal color palette or focus on wearing your best hues close to your face, the ones that you feel most confident in or that you hear the most compliments on. You can also think about your personal contrast levels, that would be the difference in lightness and darkness between your features and then echo that in your pairings. So if you have fair skin and dark hair, you might want to pair a darker bottom with your lighter top. I have plenty of color related episodes with more strategies to help you get started, so feel free to dig around in the podcast archives and of course I'll link some more stuff up in the show notes as well. But that's really all you need to worry about. For step two, just check your style, your fit and your best colors. No overthinking, just making three intentional choices or quick checkpoints to ensure that your outfit feels aligned with your style, your body and your best colors. And when you start referring to these three style foundations consistently, your outfits will come together faster and you're going to look more cohesive with less effort. It's like anything that you're learning, it just takes some time and practice to build that habit and your skill set. And this is going to bring us to the last step in the framework, which is your final 60 second mirror check. And I said 60 seconds for a reason because again, I don't want you to spend tons of time hemming and hawing over your outfit in the morning. So you're going to give your look one last evaluation before you walk out the door. Stop and ask yourself, do I feel like myself? That's so important, right? You want to feel confident and like yourself in your clothing, not like you're trying to play dress up or show up as somebody else. Secondly, do I feel comfortable enough for today's plans? Even if comfort wasn't your top priority for the day, you want to make sure that you feel confident and secure in your clothing, that nothing feels too tight or too restrictive, that you can move freely through your day and and just go about your business, focusing out on what you have to do and everyone that you're going to be interacting with. And then lastly, do I feel confident? If you get three yeses on these questions, you're done. Don't worry about making any more outfit tweaks or second guessing yourself. Just trust your style intuition and move on with your day. As a quick recap and don't disappear yet because I'm going to leave you with one little bonus tip in just a second. But to recap what we've talked about so far, the simple three step framework that you can use to overcome analysis paralysis and actually pick your outfit in five minutes flat is to first ask the magic question, what's my top priority today? Use your answer to choose the anchor or starting point for your outfit and if you need to set a timer, give yourself no more than 90 seconds to make this first decision. Then you're going to build the rest of your outfit using your style foundations. Think about what works for your signature style, what best flatters your figure your and keep your best colors in mind. Again, doesn't need to be a big complicated thing. Just make sure that you're checking in with those three things as you're choosing the rest of your pieces. And then finally number three, do a quick 60 second mirror check to make sure that you feel confident, comfortable and completely like yourself. Now here is a quick little bonus tip if you notice yourself always starting with the same type of anchor like jeans every day or always picking for comfort, try switching it up tomorrow. Rotate your anchor category. Maybe you start with color one day and then focus on expressing your personal style the next. This is going to help you break out of outfit ruts and rediscover new combinations within your wardrobe. So it's going to keep things feeling fresh and fun without needing to shop for new pieces. HER Style Podcast | Episode 263 Summary: "Too Many Closet Options? How to Put an Outfit Together in 5 Minutes or Less"
Host: Heather Riggs
Release Date: August 11, 2025
Podcast Description: Empowering ambitious women to build their dream wardrobes and show up with confidence every day.
In Episode 263 of the HER Style Podcast, Heather Riggs tackles a common morning struggle: deciding what to wear from an overflowing closet. Titled "Too Many Closet Options? How to Put an Outfit Together in 5 Minutes or Less," Heather provides listeners with a practical three-step framework designed to eliminate decision fatigue and streamline the morning dressing routine.
Heather begins by empathizing with listeners who feel overwhelmed by their wardrobe choices. At 00:00, she states:
"Hey friend, I see you there staring at a full closet, feeling overwhelmed with all the options of what to wear."
She acknowledges that a cluttered closet can lead to stress and inefficiency, making the daily task of getting dressed feel like a battle. Heather emphasizes the need for a system that transforms this experience from frazzled mornings to confident, swift outfit selection.
Heather introduces a three-step framework aimed at helping listeners choose outfits quickly and confidently. This system is designed to:
The first step involves asking a fundamental question to ground the outfit decision in the day's priorities. Heather advises:
"Ask the magic question, 'What's my top priority today?'"
At 00:04, she explains that this question shifts the focus from the wardrobe itself to the individual's needs, thereby narrowing down choices and reducing overwhelm. Heather provides six common priorities to consider:
Heather emphasizes selecting one priority to kickstart the outfit decision, simplifying the process (00:08).
Once the top priority is identified, Heather outlines how to construct the rest of the outfit by adhering to three style foundations:
Signature Style: Ensure the outfit aligns with your personal style preferences. For example, add a flowy silhouette for a romantic look or incorporate a unique accessory for a creative touch (00:12).
"Think about what's one element you can add to your outfit that reflects your personal style preferences."
Flattering Your Figure: Create a balanced silhouette by highlighting a feature you love, such as defining the waist with a belt or choosing a flattering neckline (00:18).
"Choose one feature to highlight that you really love or feel most secure about."
Harmonious Colors: Stick to a palette of two to three complementary colors that enhance your natural coloring. Heather advises using personal color palettes or focusing on hues that receive compliments (00:22).
"Stick to two to three colors that work well together and that ideally complement your personal coloring."
By consistently applying these foundations, Heather assures that outfits will become more cohesive and effortless over time (00:25).
The final step is a brief evaluation in the mirror to ensure the outfit meets key personal criteria:
Authenticity: Do you feel like yourself in the outfit? Heather stresses the importance of authenticity.
"Do I feel like myself?"
Comfort: Is the outfit comfortable enough for today's activities? Comfort remains a priority even if it wasn't the initial focus.
"Do I feel comfortable enough for today's plans?"
Confidence: Do you feel confident in your appearance? A confident mindset can influence your entire day.
"Do I feel confident?"
Heather recommends that if all three questions are affirmed with a "yes," there's no need for further adjustments. Trusting your style intuition is key to moving forward quickly (00:35).
To prevent falling into outfit ruts, Heather offers a bonus tip encouraging listeners to rotate their anchor categories. If you typically start with a pair of jeans for comfort, try beginning with a color or a different style priority the next day. This approach fosters creativity and keeps your wardrobe feeling fresh without needing new purchases.
"If you notice yourself always starting with the same type of anchor like jeans every day or always picking for comfort, try switching it up tomorrow."
Heather wraps up the episode by summarizing the three-step framework:
She encourages listeners to implement this framework to make dressing a quick and enjoyable part of their morning routine. Additionally, Heather invites those seeking more personalized support to join her HER Style Collective, a 90-day group coaching program designed to refine personal style and streamline wardrobe choices.
"Style your next look in 5 minutes or less and have some fun with this framework, my friend."
