Fall is right around the corner, and if you're anything like me, you're probably craving a little refresh in your wardrobe. But instead of diving headfirst into the trends or getting stuck in that dreaded cycle of I have nothing to wear, I want to give you three simple questions you can ask yourself to identify your fall style with ease. These questions will help you narrow in on what feels authentic, what fits your real life, and what communicates the image you want to put out there and then. And the best part? You can answer them today and start moving into fall with a crystal clear sense of what you want for your wardrobe. Having this insight handy is going to help you better navigate the seasonal trends as we explore them in our next episode later this week too. So go ahead and grab your pumpkin spice latte or iced coffee if you're not ready to let go of summer just yet. And let's get into it. Welcome to Her Style Podcast where we're all about empowering you to show up and get dressed every day with confidence. I'm your host, Heather Riggs, a 15 year and counting certified image consultant and color specialist ready to build a wardrobe and a personal style you love. Let's get started. It's been a little wild over here this week, friend. My family and I were on our annual summer vacation and then we came home and in a complete whirlwind brought brought home a sweet new pug puppy the very next day. This is something we have been talking about and planning for for quite a while, but the way it came about of bringing her home was quite last minute and she has been so much fun. Her name is Lilo. I don't know if you remember, but our past dog was a French bulldog named Stitch. So now we have a pug named Lilo. But of course having a puppy is a lot of work and a very adorable distraction. One of the members of our free Facebook community said that she took a pup, Trinity leave. How cute is that when she rescued her dog. And I'm kind of wishing that I had done the same. But I guess we are just letting work slide a teensy bit in these final days of summer. And so I just want to apologize first for getting this episode out much later in the day than usual. If you are someone who listens to them as soon as they drop I didn't mean to leave you hanging today. My original plan also was to break down the fall trends for you today, but as I was getting everything mapped out for the week, I realized these episodes were going to be out of order, because I want you to head into this season feeling incredibly clear about what you want your wardrobe to look and feel like. If you don't know what your personal style is, you're going to have a hard time deciphering which trends, if any, you want to incorporate into that vision. And my goal is always for you to know what's current but never follow trends blindly. So in a few days, I'm going to empower you with some information about what's trending for the fall and how to know what's going to be the most flattering for you. I always like to take it a step further so we don't just talk about what's trending, but why. Some of those things are going to work better for you than others. So we try to get a little bit more personalized and specific so you can navigate them with clarity and confidence. But you are going to be the one who has to decide what fits in with your personal style and what doesn't, and what works for your real life and what doesn't, and finally, what helps you achieve your goals and what doesn't. So that's the groundwork that we're going to lay out for you first today. And I broke this into three questions that you can reflect on this week. I would love for you to do this before you listen to the next episode, if possible. All right, so get ready to take some notes. The first question is, what am I drawn to visually? Your personal style always starts here. We want to think about what you like, both the look and feel of. And for this part of the process, I just want you to think about what catches your eye when you are scrolling on Pinterest or on Instagram, Instagram or TikTok, or if you're flipping through a favorite fashion magazine or your people watching at your local coffee shop. Think about what is most attractive to your eye visually. So are you loving cozy knits or the look of polished tailoring romantic details like ruffles or lace? Or are you gravitating toward earthy neutrals? Or are you ready for bold pops of color? As a very practical tip, I love to create an updated style mood board at the start of each new season. So even if you've made one before, I think it's a really good idea to refresh it for this fall or for the summer. If you are in the Southern hemisphere and you're listening to this as the weather's about to warm up or maybe it's another time of the year and this is an older episode that you're tuning into. I do recommend that you use Pinterest because it's a free resource and you can save images from anywhere on the Internet using the Pin it browser extension. I love looking for overall outfit inspiration, so I do like to get some good head to toe looks on my mood board and really helps me to be able to take a step back when I'm done. And I can look for repeating items or themes throughout everything. But you could also save artwork, color palettes, interior design images, anything that inspires you and fits in with the mood that you want your wardrobe to have in the months ahead. With this first question, the goal isn't to overanalyze or even to really pinpoint your personal style just yet. It's simply to notice what is exciting you aesthetically. What things are you drawn to? This is the fun part where you get to dream and play and explore. But we often stop here. Sometimes we're only thinking about our style as it relates to the visual component. So this is going to bring us to question number two and it's what does my lifestyle actually require? This is what's going to help you bring your fantasy style into reality. You might be drawn to tweed blazers and knee high boots, but if your day to day life is mostly preschool, drop offs and work from home zoom calls, you might want to tailor those ideas to what's going to be most practical for those types of settings. Or you might decide that you are fully committed to wearing what you love aesthetically, even if it feels like a bit of a mismatch with your day to day life. If you want my advice, I say life is short. Wear what makes you enjoy getting dressed and showing up for it fully. Hey friend, quick question. Do you ever stand in front of your closet thinking I have nothing to wear even though it's jam packed with clothes? Nine times out of 10, the women that I work with and that I hear from in our community want to find that happy middle ground between their ideal style and their practical style. And so if that is your goal, then think about what's on your calendar. I know you've heard me say this before, but think about whether you need office outfits, casual weekend wear, dressy date night options. Think about where you plan to spend the majority of your time this fall. I actually want you to break out your calendar or open up your Google calendar and take a look at what activities are coming up in the months ahead. And also think about what the climate is like where you live. Does your autumn mean 60 degree layering weather or are you still sweating it through September? We've had a lot of Texans in her style collective this summer and they keep telling me that their summer lasts while a well past September 22nd. So also think about where you live and what types of pieces and outfits are going to be most appropriate to carry you through the upcoming season. For the sake of not getting overwhelmed with this question, you can simply start by listing your top three weekly activities and then note what kind of outfit feels right for each, or what kind of outfit you'd be most excited to wear for each of those activities. If you need to, go back and revisit question number one for any areas that you need to explore a little bit further. As an example, if you only saved very professional looking outfits and maybe some related images to your mood board, but you're spending a lot of time training for your first half marathon, you might want to go back and find some extra inspiration for your fall athletic wear as well. And then if you want, you can continue to build this out from there. Go through the rest of your activities, but I think having Even your Core 3 activities covered is going to make getting dressed in your ideal style so much easier. And now for the final question. Number three is what do I want to communicate? This question is a game changer, so don't skip it. Style isn't just about clothes, it's about what your clothes communicate. One of my favorite aspects of this work, of course, in addition to helping you discover your best colors, is empowering you to communicate an accurate story about who you are through the clothing you wear and how you show up. Your outer image speaks volumes before you even say a word. So take your style a step further this season and think about what you want it to say about you. Do you want to look more approachable, polished or creative? Do you want your outfits to say I'm confident or I'm fun or I've got it together? Whatever it is, think about what story you want your wardrobe to tell. Think about your main goals or your priorities for the months ahead, and then check in and ask yourself honestly, if your outfits and wardrobe line up. This can show you some huge gaps in your wardrobe, which trends you might want to incorporate, and how to budget in the most appropriate way to ensure that you really have what you need for the fall. If you're hoping to land a new job or make an advancement in your career, you want to make sure that you have outfits that reflect that and give you the credible look that you want. Or if. If you just feel like you're ready to have more fun and adventure in your life, maybe that's a huge goal that you've realized this summer. You want to slow down a little bit and have some more fun. Maybe it's time to also be a bit more playful with your outfits. If you are looking for love right now, then you want to make sure that you have clothing that draws people in and brings out your inner confidence, no matter what it is. I would love for you to write down three words that you want people to use when describing your style and also your personality. Right, because we want them to line up together. Seriously, I want you to write them down and then put them on a post it near your computer or maybe tuck them into your wallet. And then you can refer back to those words and use them as a guide when you're choosing what to wear or what to buy. Now, before we wrap up, I want to make an important point. It's not just about what you like, what you need, and what you want to say. It's also about what looks good on you. And this doesn't mean following rules that are going to box you in, but it's about knowing your favorite features and understanding your body's shape and proportions and being mindful of your personal coloring and working with all of that, not against it. So I just wanted to plant that seed here today because in this Thursday's episode, I'm going to be breaking down the top fall trends for 2025 and advising you on how to choose the ones that not only align with your style goals, but are the most flattering for you. So you're definitely not going to want to miss that episode. It's going to be the perfect continuation of today's conversation. But for now take some time to reflect on these three questions and get crystal clear about how you want to look and feel this fall. You can ask yourself number one, what am I aesthetically drawn to? Number two what does my lifestyle actually require? And number three what do I want to communicate through my clothing and how I show up and what I wear? So take a few minutes today to reflect on all of these, maybe jot down some notes for yourself, and if you have some time, go ahead and work on making or refreshing your style mood board for the season and I promise you will feel so much clearer moving into the new season and navigating all the trends and shopping options out there.
