Welcome to her style podcast where we're all about empowering you to show up and get dressed every day with confidence. I'm your host, Heather Riggs, a 15 year and counting certified image consultant and color special. Ready to build a wardrobe and a personal style you love. Let's get started. All right. Keri, my friend, it's so good to see you and I am delighted to have you on her style podcast. How are you doing?
B
I'm great. Thanks for having me.
A
Yes. So I would love to start and just ask you to share a little bit about yourself and what this season of your life looks like. And then of course, we've got to tackle the million dollar question of what your style and wardrobe looked like before you jumped into the collective a few months ago.
B
Oh my gosh. Okay, so first of all, so my name is Carrie. I'm a mom of two little kids. They just turned 3 and 5 and I work in PR, but I've worked from home since I've had them and even before that, even pre Covid. And so it felt like this winter I realized that my wardrobe had just taken like a dark turn. Both like how it looked, literally dark clothes, but also just how it was making me feel. And a friend had recommended how I found you was a friend had recommended doing a color consultation. This thing that I think has like swept the Internet. Everyone's doing it. And it just sparked something in me where I thought, oh my gosh, like I've really lost something. I think I've lost my personal style. And I don't even know where to begin. Like, I don't know what fits my life. And it just felt like it was time for like a new approach. So that's kind of how I came to you and what I decided when I decided to get into the program.
A
So what? Let's talk about that. Because, you know, you got two very little ones at home. They're so precious. And I know sometimes it's like, okay, is this the right season to tackle this? So what made you decide to jump in and jump in when you did?
B
Yeah, well, I, you know, it's interesting because I think a lot of it was kind of just again feeling lost. And I thought, maybe I can just wait and figure it out in a year. And then I thought, that's a whole year of like my kids childhood and my motherhood where I feel yucky. And I just like wanted my daughter to feel proud because she was always like, mommy, why aren't you wearing a dress? That happened. You're like, wait, why am I not wearing a dress? Like, why am I doing this? I have the resources and tools that I can figure this out. But I knew I needed help. And so I think realizing that I just couldn't get that I wouldn't even make the time for myself. I kind of needed like a style coach.
A
Oh, my goodness. Kids are so brutally and lovingly honest, aren't they?
B
Very humbling. Yeah.
A
So what were you hoping to get.
B
Out of the collective?
A
We. We. You talked about kind of struggling and being in a dark place with your wardrobe. And what, what did you see? Like the light at the end of the tunnel? What were you hoping to walk away with?
B
Yeah, you know, it's interesting. I think that I really knew that I was coming up on. I know it's a couple of years away, but just coming up on a bigger birth, thinking, okay, who do I want to be? And just trying to start that process now of like, you're. How you look reflects how you feel. And there's just so much wrapped up in that. And you know, before kids it was just so much easier and it was becoming where I know what, what I was doing before wasn't working anymore. Not just because skinny jeans were no longer in or whatever, but I just did. I looked different, I feel different, things fit differently. And so I Tried to approach it like an opportunity to think about the next phase of how I'm presenting myself to the world.
A
That is such a powerful question. Who do I want to be? I mean, that takes it way beyond just clothing alone, right? And it's like, how do I want to be showing up and what do I want to tell the world about who I am? And clothing is one huge way that we can do that and communicate who we are at just a moment's glance. And I know that you have said that the collective has really helped you to feel happier getting dressed and more put together. So I'd love to hear what that looks and feels like in your day to day life now.
B
Yeah. So, I mean, mornings are so chaotic around here. As many systems that we can. But like, whatever mood we all wake up in, you know, things just can go awry. And I can go into my closet and literally within a minute be dressed and in something that I like. And, you know, it's. I'm not walking the Runway, but, like, it looks put together. I look like I'm going to go drop a kid off at school, and that's exactly what I'm going to do. But it looks good and I feel good, and it doesn't take long. But there was work that had to go into that. But, you know, I had sort of just even stopped looking in the mirror. It was a very rough winter. It's very icy and cold here, and I just would, like throw on all this black stuff and boots and just run out the door. And just knowing that that's not going to happen again. This winter is. Just feels so good. The summer was so easy. It was just really. It saves time, you know, and it makes. It just lifts my spirits a little bit every day. It doesn't start out with a feeling of like, oh, I've been defeated already. But like, all right, I got this day. And it's funny, you know, you don't want to think that it can feel superficial, that clothes are dictating how your day goes, but it really does set the right tone.
A
Yes, absolutely. I'm. I'm so excited that, you know, you're going to look and feel your best all winter long, no matter how warm and cozy you need to be, that you're, you know, wearing your best colors and doing all the things. And I totally skipped from A to Z. And we talked about kind of where you were before you came in and where you are now, but we skipped the whole middle. So tell us a little bit more about what the process looked like for you coming in, and maybe if you had a favorite moment or little win along the way, that really made you realize the collective is working for you.
B
Yeah, I mean, a lot of things. I think that. So I had, like, two big moments or I guess two big learnings that really started to, like, shift how I was approaching everything. And I guess probably changed the way I was shopping more than anything. So, you know, this. It's just such a wise approach. It seems simple, but I know it took. It took your time to put this together. And this. This idea of saying, well, what do I need? Like, what do I do every day? Where am I going in the next few weeks and months, and what do I need for those occasions versus a closet full of these aspirational things that I've bought? That to me was just like, oh. And that's exactly why this winter feels okay. Because I'm like, I'm not doing that much this winter. Right. I can just go cozy, but cozy and cute. It doesn't have to feel stressful. But, you know, I used to get to the beginning of a season or before a trip or something and do this huge haul of these pieces, individual pieces that were, like, cute, but I didn't know how to wear them. And they didn't go with anything in my closet. And so I'm like, also spending a little more on them because it's like, well, it's the beginning of the season and all these things I'm going to do, right. All these ski trips, I'm not going to take in reality. And so I would be buying things that were more expensive, and then I didn't want to wear them because my kids would ruin them. But also I thought that would make them look better, and somehow I would look, like, elevated and put together. But then I'm. I didn't. Wasn't wearing them the right way. I would buy a. A bright coral tank top or something that just never would be used. And then just this idea of exactly that. The colors. Buying colors that go together is incredible. It makes everything easier. First of all, they're your flattering colors, right? Because you put together these beautiful palettes for all of us. But then your closet matches, things go. And it's just so for me, that. That I think was the biggest point of success, like, the biggest thing that made my closet work for me this summer was that everything was really in these sort of muted, low contrast colors that would match and go together and just worked for me.
A
That is the dream, isn't it to stand in front of a closet and have everything not only work well together, but bring out your best so you can literally grab anything when you're trying to get the kids out the door, and everybody's wild and crazy in the morning, and you can just feel good, and it's easy. And to your point, it's like, it's not a complicated process. It's just one that we don't usually slow down enough to really stop and think about and plan for. So you're right. It's a matter of looking at what do I actually have going on, what do I need to buy, versus just let me get all the cute things when they start rolling out in the beginning of the season.
B
Yes. And just panicking and, like, throwing money at it and being like, wait, I didn't even wear those.
A
Yeah, yeah. But, yeah, there's nothing worse than, like, looking at all these cute things that you just never put on for whatever reason. And, Carrie, I know you talked about the colors, and I'm glad that you said that, because I am always preaching about the biggest difference that the colors can make in your wardrobe and in your confidence, but were there any other parts of the program that you found the most helpful or eye opening for you?
B
I think it's so funny because I'm like, oh, I spent 40 some years not knowing that I had an hourglass shape. Like, I just think that's. I'm like, oh. Like, as soon as you said that, when I was struggling with, like, what is my body type? It was like, oh, well, so that helps me know how to dress. Right. And I mean, when I was younger, like, it was just, clouds are more forgiving because I was, I don't know, more fit, whatever. But things are a little less forgiving these days. And so knowing what actually flatters my body type has just. Oh, my gosh, it's such a game changer. I just completely ignore certain sections of a website. And, I mean, I'm still learning. You know, I don't want to be like, oh, I will never go back to those sections, but I'm kind of just able to focus in on what will work and build a wardrobe.
A
Okay, well, so tell me if you want me to cut this out, because I totally will. But I feel like I remember when we first. We had our first meeting together when you were trying to decide if you wanted to jump into the program, and I think you had been on the fence of, I really would like to maybe lose 10 more pounds and then get started on this process and you decided to just go for it anyway.
B
Yes, I've totally forgotten about that. But you're right. So this was. Yeah, so this was also part of, like, my 2025. Every month, I was, like, adding something new to try to make myself feel a little bit better. I will say, I think. And I have been exercising and I have lost a little and toned. But even if I hadn't, what I've realized is that this program would have been the biggest shift even if I had never stepped on my exercise equipment. I think that I feel better because I'm exercising again, but I don't think that is what makes me feel better in my clothes right now. I think it's knowing how to dress. Like, if I had. If I was the same exact size and fitness, it wouldn't change the impact of this program, in my opinion.
A
Yeah, well, that was what I wanted to ask you. Like, do you have any regret of doing it when you did and not waiting for that moment? And that's one of my favorite things, is helping all of you to just feel better right now. You don't need to wait for anything else to happen in your life. You don't need a different body, a bigger budget. Like, we can make this work. So you can step out of your house and feel like $1 million right now. That is always my goal. And you just. I had kind of forgotten about that, too, until you were just talking about not knowing your body shape, everything. And it clicked for me that I remember having that discussion with you way back before you got started.
B
Yeah. I mean, yes. I think it's like, you come really close. There's. There's times in your life, which, I mean, I had never felt this way, but, like, I was just ready to kind of give up and be like, well, maybe I'll just be this way for a while. So, I mean, I had kids late in life and my mid. Two kids in my mid-40s, and they're both. Much to my chagrin, they're both extended breastfeeders. One has stopped, but the other. And so, I mean, this was. That was not my plan in life. It's an unexpected motherhood journey. But, you know, kids have a way of getting their needs met. And so I didn't even have a bra that fit. I'm, like, covered in boogers, and I can't find a bra because, you know, different. And I was like, well, this can't be. This cannot be my motherhood experience. This cannot be how I remember my kids when they're little is me being like, blah. I'm just glad I got started and it happened to coincide with a little bit of a fitness bump. And that's been fun, but I don't even think it's changed my sizing all that much, you know? Yeah.
A
And I think it really goes hand in hand, too, because if you are putting a little bit more attention on your wardrobe and really showing up in a better way for yourself, I feel like that's so motivating in a lot of other areas of your life. And I would love to know if working on your style has had any ripple effects on your confidence, your mindset, your daily routine, any other unexpected ways that this has impacted you or your family?
B
Yeah, I mean, I think that a little bit of, like, feeling like myself again, I would say, because it's not that I was ever a fashionista, but I always felt put together. And probably because I had kids later in life, I felt put together for a long time. That was sort of my thing. And then I was like, oh, my gosh, I've completely lost myself here. Even just going to, like, a kid's birthday party and you notice certain moms that are dressed cute, and I'm like, oh, well, if they can do it, I can do it. And the first time I went to a birthday party and like, a cute outfit in the program, my son was potty training and he did pee on me. And so that was a good moment. I was like, oops, maybe I shouldn't have worn the brand new sweater. But it was fine. You know, it was cute and it dries. But I think it's just worth the effort. And, like, I'm just glad I started when I did because now I'm that much more ahead and had a great summer, a better summer because of it.
A
Well, and imagine how you would have felt if your son had peed on you and you weren't wearing a great outfit too. You probably would have felt so much worse, Right? At least I still look cute. I might have a little pee on this new sweater, but we know it'll wash out. It just changes perspective, don't you think?
B
Totally. And it does make me feel more outgoing again and like, more social. And I'm like, okay, I look a little bit better. I can say hello versus being like, oh, just jump in the car.
A
Yeah, I think we've all had those moments where you just run out the door to grab something thing, and you're. Then you see somebody you haven't seen since high school and you're like, I gotta duck around the corner and hide in this other aisle. And just if you're not feeling your best, it does kind of hinder how much you want to put yourself out there. So I love that. It's also encouraging you to socialize and feel good with all the things that you're doing with your family.
B
Yeah, for sure.
A
So, Carrie, what is next for you? Are there any other style goals that you're excited to tackle with the tools that you have?
B
Well, I'm definitely a little behind the game, but I'm working on fall and I'm applying the principles a little bit to my kids closets. Now they're kind of like, my daughter's kind of picky and I'm like, oh, I just make it simpler for her too. But I'm still working on just like, how do I mature into a, like grown up lady's wardrobe? Just somebody looking like somebody's mother, you know, that's something that I've made a lot of progress on and want to stick with. And so that's probably where I'm at is just continuing this evolution, sticking with this more casual, everyday vibe, but like starting to figure out how to elevate for certain occasions too. Which is fun to think about now because I feel like I've got some guardrails.
A
Yeah, that's the exact, I think, natural progression of all of this is you kind of go through everything once and you build that foundation and raise the bar a bit. And then in a few months you might say, okay, I'm ready to reevaluate some things again. And it's the constant evolution of your wardrobe and also along with your life, everything changes over time. And so it's awesome to be able to have this system that you can keep coming back to and just refining and refining as much as you need to.
B
Yeah. And you know, it's funny, I had this big moment toward the end of the summer. I had a very light work week and we had no school, no camp, and I was like, I'm going to take these kids on a trip. So I took them solo to visit my parents. And I've never had an easier time packing for a trip. I just picked a few outfits and threw them in the suitcase and it was done. There was no, I better try this on, see if this works. Because I'm on a trip and I need to look cute. But like, here are my clothes. It was the best.
A
That is amazing. That makes it so much more fun when you don't have to stress about everything before you go. You can just. Just easily pack, show up, have what you need, and feel amazing.
B
Yes. It was the best.
A
All right, Carrie, are you up for some rapid fire questions? I haven't done this before, but I think it'd be really fun questions I want to ask you. All right.
B
Okay.
A
Okay. So what is a go to outfit combination for you right now?
B
Okay, I'm very into, like, wide leg jeans or a loose cropped pant and like, a more fitted tee and top. And then I'm super into, now that it's fall, these little slip on clogs, which apparently are on trend, but very comfy.
A
Yeah, I need to get a pair of those now for walking my dog. All right, what is a color that you're loving?
B
Oh, my gosh. My best white. I didn't know that. You know, it's like, white is not the same white for everybody. And you might remember I was like, I had, like, a whole set of cream creamy white shirts that I was wearing all summer, and I loved them. And so that's been so, so awesome to have, like, a white to wear again.
A
Yeah. You posted a whole montage of all your off white tops in our group for feedback. It was so much fun.
B
I need to branch out a little. But that's. That was just so cool to be like, oh, because I just stopped wearing, you know, quote unquote white, and now it's back.
A
Yeah. And you look amazing. All right. What is a piece that you're wearing more than ever?
B
Truly, those clogs. But also, I started wearing. I have a pretty little, like, pair of diamond stud earrings, and I've just started putting them on. You know, I kind of stopped wearing them, and I was like, these are beautiful. I should just elevate myself a little bit and just throw these earrings on. At least brighten things up so those have come back into, like, my daily rotation.
A
I'm all for that. I think jewelry is one of the easiest ways to take your outfit up a notch with, like, zero work. So good. Good job, friend. And then what are three words that you would use to describe your style today?
B
Okay, well, definitely casual, natural. But I also think this is two words, but grown up. It's little. Like, little. Yeah, that's what I'm going for.
A
Oh, that's a good one. I love that. All right. And so for anyone listening who is on the fence about joining her style collective, and we have a big promotion going on right now with our wardrobe revamp bootcamp, you can get in with an Incredible savings, some exclusive bonuses. What do you want them to know about your experience? Carrie?
B
I just think save yourself some money and some sanity and just go through this program. It's like you just need it more than you know. And I think that's another thing I hadn't mentioned earlier. But I'm not spending money on clothes and I'm not spending hours on shopping. I know what I need and I buy it and it fits and it's great. I mean, that's just. It saved me so much. In fact, I even had a few things with tags on when we started that I sent back. And it's. Yeah, it's just streamlined everything and it's taken this big quarterly seasonal burden right off my plate. Now I get dressed and I love it.
A
Yay. Oh my gosh. I'm so happy to hear that. And I just want to thank you again for coming on and for talking so openly about your experience and how it's worked so well for you. I'm really proud of all the work that you put in to show up and do it and keep going through it. I'm excited for the next season of working with you through this process again and hopefully we'll get a lot more women in there to join us for the fall round of the collective sale. Thank you so much, Karen.
B
Yeah, thanks so much, Heather. I'm really, really loving the program.
