Samuel de Champlain (1567-1635) championed the colonization efforts of New France. He capitalized on the North American fur trade to expand French colonies, which were at that time centered on the Saint Lawrence River valley and the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. He worked tirelessly to make sure the French colonies survived amid political and corporate changes of power. Champlain also left the World a prolific body of writings that provide an invaluable window into the challenging, yet fascinating, early period of a fledgling New France.
