Well, basically this is a survival thriller. We are continuing our summer of extreme by focusing on two best friends who are also rock climbing buddies, Becky and Hunter, who climb up a 2,000 foot tall TV tower in the middle of the desert. Now the climb that was supposed to help Becky come to terms with the death of her husband Dan, who dies in the opening scene. Very similarly to a movie that we just watched a few weeks ago in the opening scene. But after a series of mishaps, Becky and Hunter are stranded on top of the tower for the entire movie. And boy, oh, boy, we have a lot to talk about. I am Paul Scheer and I am joined by my two co hosts, Jason Mantzoukas and June Diane Rayfield. How are you both?

[Jason Mantzoukas]

Wow. You know, I really thought in this opening scene that this was going to be a movie about rock climbers and, like, the first opening sequence is beautiful. Rock climbing on a mountain and blah, blah, blah. And I was like, oh, this is what we're doing. Cool, fun. And then the entirety of the movie takes place climbing a metal tower in the desert. And I was like, what on earth is this?

[Paul Scheer]

Now, by the way, Jason, let me just correct you here. Not climbing a metal tower at the top of it. The climbing happens very quickly. The climbing of this movie is over.

[Jason Mantzoukas]

Yes.

Yeah. And that tower is so rusty.

I mean, I have so many questions about their choice of structure, but I guess we'll get into it. Yeah, I agree, Jason. The first few minutes. Well, first of all, I love the movie.

Actually, I want to say that too. I mean, this movie is trashy, but I kind of love everything about it.

Enjoyed it quite a bit.

Here's what I'll say it really, there are. And we'll get to them. But there are a number of things that happen in the last 20 minutes of the movie that made me like the movie quite a bit more than like, up until then. I. I'm going to just say it. When she kills and eats the vulture.

Oh.

[Jason Mantzoukas]

I was like, oh, okay. Now this is the movie that I wish it had been the whole time. It is a very good, tension filled thriller I'm in, But it really gets bananas when she traps, kills, and eats a raw vulture in the wild.

They're trying to do so much in this movie. And look, I get it. Clearly this is a low budget movie and a great way to do a low budget movie. I've seen many people stuck at sea. The producers of this movie, I believe, did a film with two girls stuck in a shark cage in the middle of the ocean before this.

So wasn't there one that was about people stuck on a chairlift at some point?

[Paul Scheer]

Oh, that's a great one. With the wolves. Then there's the Blake Lively one where she's like on a. Like a little. Yeah, the sharks.

Oh, yeah, she's on a buoy.

[Paul Scheer]

And what about that?

And I think Baldoni comes And saves her.

He was cut out of it, though. Was cut out of it for being a little weird. Now, I'll tell you this much, and this is a. I, I actually really like the actresses in this. Virginia Gardner. We know her from Beautiful Disaster and Beautiful Wedding. That, that little.

By the way, I didn't put that together, though.

I didn't either. Yeah, I. I was like, how do I know her?

[June Diane Raphael]

I think she is fantastic.

I was watching this and I was like, okay, this is so crazy that the other one is following her into this. And then I was like, she's so cute. She's so convincing. She got this pigtails. I was like, I think I might do the same thing. If Virginia Gardner was looking at you and delivering those lines, Paul, I would climb a tower. That's what I'm saying.

[Jason Mantzoukas]

If she showed up wearing that push up bra and said, let's go climbing. And I will say this is definitely something, as a young person, I would have thought, I can do that. Like, climbing things was something I felt very like, yeah, yeah, yeah, of course I'll climb that ladder over. You know, like that changed.

[June Diane Raphael]

You know what I wished, though? Jason. Because I felt the same thing. Like I could do. There's nothing that they did that I don't feel I'm capable of, but.

[Paul Scheer]

Wow. Really? Both of you?

[June Diane Raphael]

Okay.

Oh, yeah.

I mean, I made heights, but I also felt like there wasn't any.

I really hate heights, but. So I wouldn't like it, but I would do. But I also felt like there's no. We never got to see any skill.

[Paul Scheer]

Because they're climbing a ladder. The majority of this movie is climbing a ladder. I mean, the opening sequence. I have no faith in them as climbers because, like, when Becky is stuck on the rock face, her husband's like, just jump into my arms. And I'm like, that's not. That can't work. We're not doing that.

[Jason Mantzoukas]

That would not work at all.

[June Diane Raphael]

And by the way, though, but he. I'm not saying he deserved to die. Well, first of all, wow, you sound

like Jeffrey Dean Morgan now.

[June Diane Raphael]

I. But you know what? Anyone who goes up there to do this type of thing, it's very hard to have that much sympathy for.

[Jason Mantzoukas]

Yes, yes.

[June Diane Raphael]

You know, this whole thing of like, you've gotta face your fears. Do not let fear win. Punch fear in the dick. All this stuff. I'm like, but fear keeps us alive. Fear keeps us on the ground. There's no reason other than Virginia Gardner asking you to that you have to do any of this stuff.

[Jason Mantzoukas]

Agreed. And not only that, but, like, what I never quite understood was not Virginia Gardner, but Becky, Becky, our main character who loses everything and everyone for the most part. I mean, Becky, though Becky doesn't really seem like. I'll be honest. I think that Virginia Gardner and Dan belong together.

[Paul Scheer]

I agree. I feel like. I feel like Becky.

[Jason Mantzoukas]

Becky and Dan are a bad match because I don't think Becky wants to be there.

[Paul Scheer]

I think that Becky is not a climber.

[Jason Mantzoukas]

Yeah. She doesn't seem to have the same passion and drive, even prior to Dan's death. I mean, obviously post Dan's death, she's. She's reeling and she's questioning every. Everything and so forth, but even beforehand on the mountain face, she seems nervous and anxious and all the things you can't be if you're a climber at that level, you know?

[Paul Scheer]

Yeah. It feels to me like Dan, her. Her dead husband, kind of like met her on a weekend trip, and then he's like, oh, that's my love. And. And, you know, and that's why I feel like Becky was okay kind of having this affair, because everyone knew it. I mean, even the dad knows it. It's pretty harsh in the movie when you cut to 51 weeks later. Not 52, but 51 weeks later, and. And Becky is in a downward alcohol spiral, and her husband's like, he's not a martyr. I'm like, jesus, man. Like, her husband did die. Like, he didn't seem like an asshole, but Jeffrey Dean Morgan, like, you don't really.

He knew, though, that.

[Paul Scheer]

You think he knew?

[June Diane Raphael]

I think he had a clue. Yeah.

[Jason Mantzoukas]

I don't know. I don't know that he knew that they were cheating. But what's definitely clear and the movie tells because every single picture that Becky looks at on her phone, someone is in the background of that picture revealing their true feelings.

So, by the way, look alive when a camera comes out. Look alive. You never know. Never know what people are going to catch every time. Zoom, enhance, enhance.

[Jason Mantzoukas]

You know, Becky's looking at the camera at her wedding video, and there's Hunter in the background just, like, looking so lovingly at Dan. And then in, like, an hour later, she's looking at pictures, and her dad is in the background at the wedding, looking, staring daggers at Dan.

[June Diane Raphael]

You know, alive.

[Paul Scheer]

As an audience member. As an audience member. We are. We are like, we are having I had a hard time digesting that Mason Gooding, who is Dan, was a bad guy. Cause we have nothing to lead us to believe that before he dies. And it's a harsh way to introduce these characters, but I guess maybe everyone was right.

[June Diane Raphael]

Yeah, you never know. Can I just say, I mean, listen. Go ahead.

[Paul Scheer]

Well, and this has nothing to do with her acting, because I like Grace. Carolyn Curry, who plays Becky, very good. But the entire time I was like, why do I know her? Why do I know her? And I'm like, oh, she looks like Tilly Norwood, the face of, like, the most beautiful AI actress.

[Jason Mantzoukas]

AI actress.

[Paul Scheer]

And I looked at it, and I was like, oh, my. And not, not. This is not performance. This is just based on looks. And I was like, is she the perfect face? Because they look when you look at them together, there is a similarity. And I was like, maybe. Maybe we've been incepted. This is a buzzfeed movie. Is this the first testing of Tilly Norwood?

Well, I thought that some of the photography in the beginning especially, was beautiful. You know, it's. It's hard, though. Again, I go back to the skill, the skill of rock climbing, because now, first of all, I don't know what ran out of that little hole. That Dan.

Oh, it was a little owl. A baby owl. Oh, terrifying.

It didn't even, like, fast and loose with those.

It didn't even hold for a second. First of all, thank God that they weren't attached to each other.

They're always attached to each other, though, in this movie, when they're climbing up the tower, they're attached to each other. But, I mean, but I feel like you're right. Like, she asks him, like, give me more slack, and he. She cuts out his slack to give him more room to kind of attach Himself to the rock face. But it seems like. I don't know, they seem.

[June Diane Raphael]

I don't know what happened there. Because she didn't fall.

[Paul Scheer]

Yeah, I guess you're right. So maybe there is good rock climbing here. I didn't like the rock climbing on the tower because it just seemed like the rope was attached to the one above them. Like, it just seemed like they were.

[Jason Mantzoukas]

That is what it was.

[Paul Scheer]

So they were just two people attached by one rope?

[Jason Mantzoukas]

Yes.

They were never attached to the structure, I don't think.

They were never clipping into the tower, which made no sense.

You know, like, even when they were

Why does she put blood in her bed? Her nightmare was like that. Her husband's with her, and then. And she looks up like, is it like his dead body fell into the bed? Like, it's like. You don't picture him as bloody, I don't think.

[Jason Mantzoukas]

Yeah. And the blood seemed to be on her. And I was like, wait, is she. When was she bleeding like this? I couldn't figure that out either. Or was that just the blood of her. Oh, because had she had the leg injury by then? I don't know.

[Paul Scheer]

No, she didn't have the leg.

[Jason Mantzoukas]

She didn't. Okay.

I had. Maybe she felt blood was on her hands.

Oh, but then it would have been on her hands.

Well, here's my thought, and maybe this is just the way that I think, but if this guy is cheating on her, I would be saying I love you all the time because you got to cover your tracks a little bit. I wouldn't be. I wouldn't be interesting, but I wouldn't be like being coy about it because that would open up questions, right?

Also, like, what this guy? What this fucking dick? He's having an affair on his wife and he brings like, with her best friend and the three of them alone go and climb some incredibly difficult, challenging mountain face. Like, I was like, what is this about? This guy is absolutely.

I here's what I wanted to know about Dan. The lingering question for me is when Becky says something where they're sort of memorializing him. Their hunter's crying after they. They threw off the ashes. And then Becky says something like, yeah, Dan, he's always telling those jokes. And I was like, are they saying that he was telling shitty jokes?

Oh, I thought. I thought people in America don't speak that way. Like, that's like a very brief.

Well, one of my big notes on the movie was because there's a huge chunk of the movie. Act two is kind of inert in a lot of ways. There's a lot of, like, either not much is happening or failed attempts at things that don't amount to much. And I was like, oh, I wish we were in here having more flashbacks. More flashbacks that give us more insight into. Because when, when the cheating was revealed, I was like, oh, I like this. This is an interesting, like, thing to insert here. Now there's this, this mystery we're uncovering. Becky's unraveling this. This betrayal from danger. D and Dan, of course, And I was like, oh, I wouldn't. We see it in those, like I said before, pictures where you see, oh, hunters lurking in the background or whatever. But I would have loved flashbacks that fleshed out that story because so little was happening on the tower.

Right. Because you do feel like. You feel like, well, what else could possibly happen on a small platform? And they have to invent certain things because there's moments where, like, you know, where, like, Becky thinks, oh, is Hunter dead? But I'm like, you really have to suspend your disbelief. They are on a tower.

It's.

It's, like, pretty much transparent. You know, you can see through everything. And she's like, is she okay? Is she okay? It's like, well, just look. You can look. You could. You did. You would hear it. You would see it. You would.

Well, yeah, well, that's later. I'm just saying, like, in the first kind of moments where she's like, oh, you know, she's. She's not. It's like, well, you can see what's going on. You. There's nothing.

Here's my question about what they. I understand what you're saying, Jason. I actually really. I enjoyed the movie. I thought, like, oh, this is paced. Well, I didn't think it was paced perfectly, but there were things happening that I didn't expect, necessarily. But my main question. Well, first, the Egg Drop Challenge. Now, Paul and I are both. Both of our children have competed. They compete annually in the Egg Drop Challenge. Now, granted, they're not dropping from that height.

I think that if I'm doing a little work on the movie's behalf, I think the movie would like us to believe she loves climbing.

I'd like to stay the night. But I said, well, how about one? And then they said, we can do noon. And I said, okay. So there was a little bit of negotiation. Now, noon comes and goes.

Well, let me. Can I just put this into perspective? It's 1150. And June goes, let's go swimming. And I go, well, we're. We're not packed.

My question, my follow up question was how would you feel about at your hotel at three and the room is not clean?

Well, I did that. The hotel that we were checking out of on Sunday, their check in was, get this, 4pm What? And I was like, that's, yeah, I'm

That's exactly what should have happened is we should have met, like, five townspeople. We met the woman, the waitress at the diner who pointed out where the tower is. We in the diner, we should have met, like, four or five people that. Throughout the movie, we could have cut to. To see that, like, when the truck hits the drone.

You know what I mean? Like, like, we never get we. And I get it because it would maybe let some of the tension out or something like that if we weren't just with the girls the whole time. But there's an element of like, oh, it would have helped me understand. Ooh, somebody could write. If somebody picked up the drone, you know, engaged with it more, and then it still amounted to nothing. Those kind of like, oh, are they gonna get rest? Like, this moment of the guys being like, oh, they see us, they see us, and then they're stealing my car. Happens in one and a half so quickly that's.

I missed some of it. Now, I. I don't really know how far binoculars your average binocular can see, but I found it pretty unbelievable that those binoculars could watch that man outside of his truck look over and see the drone with the note in it, but not pick it up.

Well, but that note in it, like, that was such a look. If I see a drone, I'm like, oh, I guess they want to talk to me. I'd be like, get the fuck away. Like, I would just leave it there on the road, too. It didn't seem to me like, I

I mean, there's a lot of things that I feel like they could have done, but what I think was very smart was, oh, and you know what? Wow. We really have not. We've gotten this far into the podcast without revealing that in that almost all of Act 3 is a fight Club situation. A Tyler Durden.

Did it surprise me? No, it didn't. Although I thought they effectively camouflaged it.

I thought so too, you know, so there's a moment where a hunter is gonna descend the 50ft of rope that they have in order to pick up the backpack so that they can get the drone and ba, ba, ba. And there's all this mechanics of her going down it's super dangerous. She gets the backpack, and then she gets. She. Becky rather, pulls her up. Pulls her up, and then they. They're up there and they get the drone. And everything we've talked about with the drone and everything happens after that. And then at the end of the movie, it's revealed that, in fact, Becky has been doing this all alone. Because in that sequence at the end of Act 2, Hunter has fallen to her death. She was unsuccessful in. She was successful in getting the backpack, but she fell to her death afterwards. And that every conversation that they've been having, Becky's been having with herself in a fight club kind of a way. Right. Is that a good.

[Paul Scheer]

Yeah. Right? Yeah. So everything that she's like, char. Like when she's charging the. Like. By the way, that was the funniest thing. When she's holding the drone to her chest, she plugs it in, which is something that I still don't believe is a functional way to charge. I don't think you can do a charger and all that sort of stuff.

[Jason Mantzoukas]

The wedding band is the conduit.

Loved that. Loved it.

Again, she's not tied onto the pole at all. She's simply holding her entire body. That was core work. But for how long would it take to charge four bars of a drone? That's three hours. I don't know. Right.

Because it's like that, to me, is the funniest thing. She's holding on, and she goes, what does the one bar mean? And I'm like, all right, so you don't even understand that technology. Like, we all understand that the bars. One bar is.

But by the way, you watch Survivor and you look at some of the Survivor challenges where it's always the tiny little women that are winning the poll. Challenges where they just have to sort of koala bear around the poll.

Now, I have to say, I thought that they did a great job. Well, I. I. You know, again, I really enjoyed this movie. I thought they did a great job with the makeup and showing them sort of the sun damage, the chapped lips, day to day, looking so dehydrated. But my question was this. And I Think this is only something that women are going to relate to. You are up there, by the way. Moment one. Just seeing the structure. I'm putting my hair up in a fucking bun.

but I have a couple issues now. I understand. Okay. We've used one hairband to secure the phone into the shoe. But it turns out, as we'll find out later on in the end sequence, she had another hairband the whole time. The fact that that hair was down.

When they start to go down and the ladder collapses, they seem so shocked later on that the ladder is not there.

Yes, well, because I think that was done in CGI and they had. And they weren't there for the actual ladder collapse.

They are like, when they get to the top of the platform, they're laughing. They're like, we did it. And then they look and are like, wait a minute. And I'm like, this all just fell from, like under your feet.

What did you think?

Well, the ladder collapse to me really hit home because it felt like when I'm building Legos, like when you're trying to put a real ladder together. And like I was building like the Daily Bugle and it fell apart in such a way that it was almost like paper. Like, I didn't even understood how it could have held them because it crumbled. It crumbled into dust. And it feels like, why don't you do that? Like have them lose a rung in the middle of it or something. It just seems like they.

And then. You know what really pissed me off though, Paul? Then, because there's a little bit of that ladder, there's probably like five feet that's remained there okay. That's attached to the platform. When they get back on that to go get the. To sort of hang off of it to try to get service, she doesn't check that ladder to see if it's secure. They jump right back on it.

Yeah.

I'm like, this is crumbling.

And when one of the screws falls out and falls near her and makes a metallic cling, she just goes, what was that?

And that's part of the problem for like why we didn't get to see the rescue is was what happened. The phone dropped inside of Hunter's body and then the text went through to Jeffrey Dean Morgan and then he called the authorities, but then he was the last to arrive.

But he also didn't think that she was alive because he sees that body on the ground. Like, oh my God, what? I think that he just finds out.

Right. The other question is, was she live streaming and did the live stream start inside the Converse inside? That's quite a way for an influencer.

But it looked like she texted her dad was what it looked like.

Yeah, and I mean, people are really nervous during this movie. Thomas Morgan writes, this is one of the most exciting scary films I've ever seen this century. Because Das Boot was last century.

[Jason Mantzoukas]

What? What submarine movie? Das Boot. Okay.

[Paul Scheer]

I mean, Giggs writes, don't go climbing where you don't belong in the first place. The tension was practically unbearable. We all identify with the characters. We feel what they feel. We see what they see. We're with them every step of the way. Okay? Self preservation. Shouts at us all with multiple voices, and they're very loud. The terrifying part of falling to one's death is that you have time to think about it. On the way down? How will I feel when I hit the ground? Will I feel it? Will my last sensation be agonizing pain? Why did I do this? I should have stayed home. No more getting drunk. No more getting laid. No more laughing. No more having good times with friends. All these thoughts and more will pass through your mind like the fast forward on a tape player, all while you're at terminal velocity, feeling the wind rushing past you at 125 miles an hour and screaming the fateful. We see this on television or in James Bond movies. And aside from the occasional feelings of nausea and vertigo, I got through the film okay, hoping it would all turn out well in the end. And at the very end of the film, I felt exhausted and spent. And I was glad it was over. This film was extremely well written, superbly acted. The filming was extraordinary, especially at the heights it appeared to be. And I can only think a large amount of funding was spent on the CGI because there was one of those adrenaline junkies holding the camera. Although I do doubt they pay actors to do their own climbing. Lots of movie magic. I will add this to the other movies in my collection of mountain climbing films like K2, Into Thin Air, Mission Impossible 2, Vertical Limit Cliffhanger, and the North Face. That's as far as I'll ever get to being on some sheer cliff face or treasured mountainside. Five stars. Don't look down.

So much. And by the way, I cut it down. I mean, the first. The first line is, I didn't watch this movie. I endured it.

The person seems to feel as though they shot this movie at that height.

Yes.

Yes. That's exactly what.

They just shot it on a tall mountain. They shot it on a tall mountain they built. And so it looked like they were high. They unfortunately built it on an an hill that shut down production.

Oh, really?

Yes. And. And then. And then they got caught in a windstorm which almost knocked the whole thing over. And it was based on the. The real kxtv. KROV Tower in Walnut Grove, California.

[Jason Mantzoukas]

Okay.

The second stall structure in the United States. Jason June, any thoughts about this movie? Anything that we didn't mention?

I don't. I mean, I think we covered everything. Pretty much everything. Yeah.

I mean, the one thing like I just. I think that if I am. If it be. If it comes to it, and I have to fight a vulture.

She. Oh, my gosh. So June. We know that June would kill herself. Jason, you are a survivalist in our group. You are the biggest survivalist any.

I would, I would certainly try some stuff. And, and I'm just saying it ends,

you know, it ends with us, me and the.

No, I don't think I'm coming down. You know what I mean? Like. But I would try more stuff for me. I would also be more prepared if I'm honest.

[Paul Scheer]

Jason asked, is this movie about, you know, an indictment on people who cheat? Or, like, the people who cheat paid the ultimate price. What I would say is this is a movie about social media influencers who are fucking with nature. She took that picture with that dead donkey, she said, feeling peckish. And from that moment on, she has doomed herself to death. That, to me, felt like. Like, leave the world alone. It's not all about just getting your likes. It's not all about getting the thing. You know what? We should all be sitting down, talking about our favorite wrestlers, not climbing the top of the mountains. All right? That's what we should. That's what this movie is about. Let's take away the mountains and just talk about Stone cold Steve Austin or mankind. Let's sit there.

[Jason Mantzoukas]

And she should just be hanging out with Jeffrey Dean Morgan in his candy shop in upstate New York that he owns and runs with Paul Rudd and having a nice life. And you know what? Great. You're rid of Dan. You know, the cheater Dan.

[Paul Scheer]

I like Mason Gooding too. And I think maybe that was my hard time with him because I have a positive association with him in those Scream movies. I like him as an actor, so I feel like, they needed more of a dick. And I think he should have been more of a dick in that first scene. Like, what are you afraid of? Just jump. Like, I would have liked a little bit of that. Just give me a little bit. I don't know.

[Jason Mantzoukas]

I think I also would have liked it if in the beginning they had been climbing a non mountain thing, so

[Paul Scheer]

that it was because they're more adventure climbers.

[Jason Mantzoukas]

I wish this was on a mountain.

[Paul Scheer]

visuals, this looked better than just them atop a rusty tower.
