Eric
Are you going to talk or should I?
Fran
When they told me you were coming to visit, I was surprised.
Eric
Yeah, well, you shouldn't be.
Fran
Isn't us meeting against court protocol? My trial hasn't even started yet.
Eric
I'm not involved in the trial. Hart is handling statements and evidence.
Fran
I knew I should have killed him when I had the chance.
Eric
Yeah. You know they record these things, right?
Fran
I'm not hiding anything. And that's probably why you're here. I hear congratulations are in order, Sheriff.
Eric
I resigned. Effective today.
Fran
Huh. Interesting.
Eric
Why did you do it?
Fran
Do what?
Eric
All of it. Kill people, involve spacer. Why?
Fran
You don't care about any of that. I can see it on your face. You probably already know. If heart's halfway decent at listening to dictation. The tapes have everything. So why don't you ask me what you really want to know?
Eric
Why? Fran? What happened?
Fran
She figured it out. She knocked on my door, gun drawn. So I let her in. We had a nice little talk. She didn't hold back. She told me what she knew, so I told her the rest. About John. About his insane little beliefs about Roger and Springfield Court. She said as she came on her own, no one else knew yet. So I showed her the lab, the one you found, and told her about what her son experienced when he died. The same thing my brother did. And the same thing all the rest of them felt. It's like being boiled from the inside out. Very painful. There's always screaming, lots of blood and all, as I'm sure you saw. And our little fucking town allowed it to happen to children. So then I did it to her.
Eric
Did she say anything for she.
Fran
Is that why you're here? To know if she expressed her love for you as her dying words? That might be the most pathetic thing I've ever heard. Are you really that broken? Oh, Eric. She was crying, sobbing like a little baby. She didn't say a word, which is so sad for such a strong woman. Nobody gets a fucking happy ending, Eric.

Dancing was a no, no, no women dancing. That would be something that, yes, the cops would grab you for. There were no black owned female gay bars. We needed a place of our own in those days. We went to the bars to socialize because there was no other way. When you went to Brady's Bar, you knew you were safe.
