(I'm looking at you, P.D. James and Colleen McCullough!) Austen's writing, mature or juvenilia, has a brilliant mix of humour, kindness, and shrewdness: this lovely and ingenious pastiche re-creates most of it to such an extent that we are inclined to forgive small purplish lapses here and there. Love and Freindship and Other Delusions is a book one reads smiling throughout, a precious gift from Miss Beth Andrews in current times. Hilarious! Try it, you'll love it! This authorâs version of âLove and Freindshipâ is cleverly written. Itâs hilarious,scandalous and ânaughty but niceâ! I highly recommend this book, even to those who are not familiar with Jane Austen! Try it, you'll love it! Fun to read This is a beautifully written romp in Jane Austenâs style and very funny. Beth Andrews has a real mastery of this kind of writing. I hadnât read the original Austen but it didnât matter at all as itâs included at the end. The story is fun and runs along at a breathless speed. This author has written other regency detective stories which I've enjoyed.

Probably top 5, my top audibook is The Handmaid's Tale, but this is really very very good. What other book might you compare The Fair Fight to and why? I don't know that I've ever read anything like it... Which scene was your favorite? (Spoiler) The first time Ruthie taught Charlotte how to fight. If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be? Two women from different walks of life fighting their way to happiness. Any additional comments? Get this. Seriously. Specially if you are a woman and want to hear something with good female characters. But I believe men will equally appreciate it. The ending is worth the wait I loved the stories of Ruth and Charlotte, especially Ruth. The first chapter with her in the Convent was incredibly engaging. Charlotte's story took longer to develop for me, it was only around half way through that I started to get interested in how her character and story would develop. However I was completely uninterested in George's character and story. I felt the women were the focus and George was a bit of an oddity. I'm sad to say he bored me and I wanted to skip past his narratives to get back to the women. The writing was good and perhaps I missed some finer points. The ending was well worth the wait though, every character ends up exactly where they deserve to be which is very satisfying. Give it a go. Entertaining Yarn Enjoyable picaresque that thoroughly entertained for the full running time. Well worth the credit and the listening hours!

If so, why? l highly recommend this story. It focuses on the first world war and the recruits from rural areas. It gives an insight as to why so many young men signed up in without an awareness of the personal consequences. What did you like best about this story? The relationship between the two main characters, also the illustration of a way of life lost after the First World War. Have you listened to any of Josie Dunns other performances? How does this one compare? No. This is the first, brilliantly read. Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry? Felt tearful at the end, not a common reaction. Any additional comments? l am a great fan of Jaqueline Winspear's Maisie Dobbs' books. I think this one is better and l hope there may be a follow up. i would love to know what happens next to the main character.

Such is the case with 'How to Paint a Dead Man' by Sarah Hall. This is Ms. Hall's fourth book. Her second book, 'The Electric Michelangelo', was short-listed for the Man Booker Prize. This is a book about art and artists, about life and grief. It is about "how we investigate our existence and make meaning and teach one another in small and large ways". The book is like a chorale woven of four parts, each part about a different artist. The composition of the book is much like a chorale in music with each artist playing a different role in the book. There is Suzi, a curator and photographer, who is so lost in her grief for her dead twin and mentor, Danny, that she has lost herself. No matter what extremes she goes to in order to feel alive, her grief is pervasive and overriding. In fact, the emotion is so strong that she denies it is grief. "You're not sure what's wrong exactly; it's hard to put your finger on, hard to articulate. It isn't grief. Grief would be simple. Something internal, something integral, has shifted. You feel lost from yourself. No. Absent. You feel absent. It's like looking into a mirror and seeing no familiar reflection, no one you recognize hosted within the glass." Hall's descriptions of grief are the most profound and poignant I have ever read. The poignancy is reflected in the demise of the human spirit as it searches to be reborn. Annette is a blind Italian florist, caught up in the visions in her head. Despite her mother's attempts to keep her childlike, she blooms , much like the flowers she loves. She sees beauty in others, senses colors, and is empathic. She imagines the world in all its sensory glory and has been deeply influenced by Giorgio, the artist who taught in her school when she was a child. Years after his death, she still brings flowers to his grave. Giorgio is an elderly Italian artist of some renown. His character is based on that of the actual artist, Giorgio Morandi, known for his exquisitely shaded paintings of bottles. Giorgio lives a reclusive life but is influential in mentoring a young landscape artist named Peter. Peter's landscape art takes him to the brink of danger, and the very landscape that he loves and is the source of his inspiration, becomes a threat to his life. He is Suzi and Danny's father and has been Suzi's mentor.

She is caught between her fathers old Confucian ideas of a womans place and the more liberal opportunities offered through education from Christian missionary schools during the occupation. Her father struggles to adapt to a new era as his aristocratic lifestyle turns to dust and his name means nothing under foreign rule. Yes I felt frustrated with Najin's fathers patriarchic attitude and had to remind myself that these were different times. But the story itself is fascinating. The storyline moves at a gentle pace. It's about endurance and respect and doing one's duty as we follow the family from Najin's childhood to the end of the war when she is a married woman. It's obviously more difficult to narrate a story with foreign words and characters. And the narrator did not seem to be familiar with the romanisation system of Korean and so there are some pronunciation issues. That's just a small point though. Overall I enjoyed listening to this book.

Paradoxically, her words also flit like butterfly wings and charm like a sunlit stained-glass window. Her paragraphs are painted with the poetry of a lucid dream. With each sentence she performs literary alchemy and makes heaviness light. I'd expected the writing to be superb. I've read many of her essays on Thought Catalog and come to expect fine writing from J.E. Reich. But this debut novella not only exceeded my expectations, it reached escape velocity, shirked gravity, and headed for the stars. It's really that damn good. If you need a comparison, this book reminded me "Coming Through Slaughter," by Michael Ondaatje. One of the most memorable moments was when Jesse learned something of God from the Indian, that God cares for all things that breathe. Life - God created it all and it could all be respected. I don't know, I can't finish listening to it with the terrible narrating. Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Catherine O'Brien? Anyone, they couldn't have been worse than her.
