Hey, my name is Lizzie Smiley and I absolutely love helping people connect with their calling and all the tools they need to kick roadblocks and excuses right out the door so they can cultivate the life they dream about. If you want to launch, grow, pivot or scale your Etsy shop, or you've always wanted to develop the mindset and skills to run your own business, then I'm your girl. I've had that entrepreneurial spirit going strong since my very first lemonade stand. And now I'm a work at home mama with multiple online companies and a full time Etsy shop. All while being present with my kids for the everyday chaos and most important milestones. On this podcast, we'll talk about all things business, mindset, Etsy creativity, dazzling our customers, and so much more. There's plenty of room at this table for you, so scooch on in and let's go. I'm holding nothing back. Welcome to how to sell your stuff on Etsy. I'm so glad you're here. Hey guys. Hey guys. It is a new era. Jenny from the shop is sitting with me and we are launching, announcing we're going to be doing mindset episodes with you guys once a month. Yay. We've been feeling, we've been feeling so pulled toward this and you guys have been loving all of the mindset episodes. So we're like, we need to make this like a series, a regular thing. So I hope you're excited. Today we're talking about becoming a six figure seller because we are all about that mindset shift that you need to go from 0 to 100k and we're going to dig into all the details. I only have one announcement today and that is before we dive into the episode, I want to share about my amazing friends over at Profit Tree IO, which is the only Etsy automated profit tracking and ads optimization tool. They're offering lifetime access for a limited time offer. So I recently episode 174 I interviewed Hannah who's the owner of Profit Tree and she has been teaching people how to at a minim 2x their Etsy sales and increase profits by at least 20% with her Etsy ad strategy. So if you've been wanting to learn about Etsy ads, you're going to want to check out episode 1 74. She alone has spent over $400,000 on Etsy ads and just knows it like the back of her hand. She teaches it better than anyone in the business. So her tool, Profit Tree not only helps you to do this, but her lifetime deal also comes with access to a free ads masterclass and it reveals all of her methods. It should cost money, guys, but you literally just get access to it. I'm going to link this in the description for you all to grab. Knowing your real profit on Etsy is so important and they make it really easy with like integrations to printify and printful so that you can get a true picture of where your business is at and be able to scale for profit and not just revenue. The numbers matter. I know some of us cringe at them, but we need the numbers. So awesome stuff, guys. Not sure how long that lifetime offer link is going to be active after posting this, so make sure that you grab it today. And let's get into some mindset goodness with Jenny. Yay. So the very first thing that we want to tell you is that this is, has just, we've been feeling for a while now really aligned to work together on this more. And so we're going to be hosting a workshop for you guys, a live workshop. It's going to be called 0 to 100k mindset and it's going to be on Thursday, May 15th. Yeah. At 12:00pm Central Standard Time. We're doing it midday because Jenny is in Greece. No, it's great. So this is the opportunity. So here's where you take a long lunch. It's going to be an hour and a half. Here's where you take a long lunch or you take the day off or you watch the replay later. You'll, you'll get a replay for sure. But the thing is, is we want to talk through and work with you like in the, in the muck about common success blocks, like helping you identify what they are, creating a plan for overcoming them. We're going to do teaching, we're going to do visualizations, we're going to work on affirmations, which Jenny's about to tell us how important that is. And then we'll have a few other, like, surprises in there. But a lot of times we come to Etsy or any business and we have these goals. We're like, this is what I want to achieve. I've seen others do it. There's these big flashy numbers. And entrepreneurship is all about, yes, identifying what you want, what those goals are that you want to hit. But then you have to nurture what you need to get what you want. So Lizzie, when she first started her Etsy shop, was not who she needed to be to build it to six figures. I needed to fill some gaps I needed to change some of the ways that I thought we're going to get into specifics today. I needed to improve some of my skills. So you need to be nurturing what it is that you need. And Most people, like, 99% of people have major mindset blocks. So I want to. Jenny, I want you to really kick this off now that we've, like, announced and it's here and people can start jumping in the class. But it's so crazy what happened just today. So take. Tell them. Tell them.
Jenny
I'm so excited that my heart could, like, pop out of my chest right now. But basically, I wanted to first say that 90. I. I really credit. I would say, like, 95% of my success. I know that sounds crazy in anything that I do is because of my mindset. Like, I wholeheartedly believe that because there were so many times. I'll use Etsy an example, because most of us are Etsy sellers here. There were so many times in the beginning with Etsy that I needed myself to pull myself through those hard times and those thoughts of doubt and the thoughts of, like, why am I even doing this? Does this actually work? Are those people lying, saying that they're making that much or. My designs are awful. All those negative thoughts, I had them too, guys. And I still have them. And I still have. But I know how to work through them much faster now. But. So 95% of my success was my mindset because I pulled myself out of the muck when I was having those doubts. And I just. Right before we came on with Lizzie, I had a flashback to when I first started. And I'm so glad this happened, I guess, because I was, like, prepping, you know, thinking about what we were going to talk about tonight. And I was like, where is that shiny journal? This. I found it, guys. This came with me from the States. I started, you know, my Etsy shop when I lived in the US and it came with me to Greece. This was a special thing because I downsized a lot, got rid of a lot of things, but this was so special to me.
Lizzie Smiley
This.
Jenny
It's falling apart. It's falling apart. And if you come to the live workshop, I'm going to show you more of what's inside here. But I will just say, like, I. I'm so proud of myself looking back in here, because there's a lot of, like, goals and affirmations that I wrote in here to, like, train my brain and keep me accountable. And, like, I would just try to write in here. I'm not going to say every day. I probably didn't do it every day, but a couple times a week, it looks like I was pretty consistent. Every month. I wrote goals in here to, like, get excited about it. I wrote, like, listing goals, which we're going to get into later. But, you know, I was like, you're going to do a hundred listings this. This month and get to this amount of listings by next month. And I would have. I have check marks and like, this. This journal looks so crazy, but, like, it, you know, it's what got me through, really. And I'm not saying you have to start a journal or anything, but all I can say is, like, it's so positive. This thing is so positive that, like, there was no look at it. It's ripping. It's ripping. There is no negativity allowed in here. And I really think, like, journaling helped me, like, hold myself accountable and stay positive and that a lot of the goals that I wrote in here, pretty much all of them came true.
Lizzie Smiley
So do you mind? Please say them.
Jenny
Well, they're all over the place, but let's see. So. Well, let me just say, like, my. My younger self was so cute. I wrote, like, things that I was grateful for, like my family, my health, passion, abundance, Family first, protect your energy. Like, I would just write, like, cute little things. Okay, where is the. This one was really cool. So my goal for the month was having my first 10k month. And. And I accomplished it and hit 12k.
Lizzie Smiley
I didn't know that.
Jenny
What? I didn't remember that either till right now. That was in November of 2020. So it was like the holidays. It was my first holiday season and I hit 12k. So profit. Profit. We're talking here. And that's the moment where I was like, this works like, I couldn't believe it, guys. I couldn't believe it. That's why Q4. And we're gonna help you guys with your mindset for Q4 so we can all have a rock in Q4.
Lizzie Smiley
This is perfect timing. Like, we are queued up.
Jenny
Yeah. And okay, so I. I know. I'm trying to find it, but I know I wrote that. And I write all of my goals in present tense as. As if I already have it. So I know it's in here. But I said, like, I moved to Greece with my family. I quit my teaching position and make money from, like, passive income. Okay. I quit my teaching career. I make more a month through Etsy than a year of teaching. That has happened. That has happened. I have 50% USA, 50% Greece, which now we're, like, pretty much more Greece. Like, we only go to the US for holidays. But that's okay. Like. Like we were saying earlier, Lizzie, how you don't have to be so attached to your goals because it might not work out the way you thought you wanted it to, and then you realize, like, oh, that's okay. I didn't really want it to be that way. But anyways, any. Yeah, everything pretty much came true here, and it's. It's really crazy. And if you guys want. Like, if you come to the live, I can share more about this. I don't want to bore you right now.
Lizzie Smiley
Can I ask you, though, how does that feel? How does it feel looking back at that? Because. Okay, so, like, the thing is, guys, your brain. This is one of the most amazing things I ever learned. Your brain doesn't know the difference between what you tell it to think, like, between truth and your thoughts. So it just takes everything very literally, which is why mindset is important and meditation and affirmations are important, because you're basically telling your brain what to create, and it's all. Have you ever heard about. What are those subliminal advertising where they put things in your brain, like, super covert. So you're just basically covertly rewiring your brain. So you're so.
Jenny
For.
Lizzie Smiley
For years, it was actually. You did it so fast, Jenny. You for months made yourself feel like you already had it, and now you're sitting there like, hindsight 20 20, and you're looking at it, and you do have it. What is it? Like, what does it feel like?
Jenny
Well, it's so crazy. I shared this. The one story on, like, the last podcast I think we did on Mindset, and I'll just touch on it really quick, but I had an affirmation card that I would carry around with me, and it said something along the lines of, I was able to quit my teaching position and move to Greece with my family. Like, I make money easily and effortlessly every single day. I'm financially free. And I had that card, and then I forgot about it, and it was just, like, in a book bag. And I remember one day here in Greece, I went to a Pilates class, and on my way home, I was walking home, and I stopped to sit on the beach and just, like, look at the water. And I went, for some reason, went into my book bag, and I found that card, and I read it, and I was like. Like, looking at it and looking at the water, and like, we had just Moved to Greece like a month or two before and I was like shaking. I was like, oh my. It actually worked. Like, I read it and it was now true. But there were so many days where I read it and it wasn't true yet. And it felt uncomfortable for me to read it in the present tense. Like I live in Greece with my family and I'm financially free, but I just would read it every single day to the point where I could just repeat it in my head without like reading it. But. And that's why I ended up putting it away and forgetting about it. So, so then when I read that I was like, what? This actually worked? It's so crazy. So yeah. And like there's this I heard recently. I forget where I heard it. But you know how when we go to sleep at night, we have to pretend to sleep in order to fall asleep?
Lizzie Smiley
You're right.
Jenny
You have to lay there and close your eyes and pretend to sleep in order to fall asleep. Like that's the same thing in anything else we do. We have.
Lizzie Smiley
And it's unless you're a man. Unless you're a man and you just fall asleep in 10 seconds.
Jenny
But it's normal to us because we've done it, we do it every night, right. Since we were kids. But if we can just make it normal for us to pretend like the other things, before you know it, we might have what we're manifesting much faster. And what I mean by pretend is to be able to just sit and close your eyes and visualize something. Like, you don't have to pretend to be super wealthy and go out and buy an expensive car if that's what you're into. But I'm not talking about blow all your money and pretend you're super wealthy. I mean, being able to sit there and visualize what you really want. You have to get clear on what you really want and, and then also feel good while you're having that visualization. Because what we're really chasing is that feeling, not the tangible thing. Like, how are you going to feel? And it's not even like, I wouldn't even say, if your goal is to have a lot of money, try to switch that to like, why do you want a lot of money? What are you going to do with all that money? Oh, you're going to like pay off your parents house. That's amazing. Like, how would you feel to be able to like gift that to them? Like, oh, you're gonna go on that dream vacation. How would that make you feel? And I know it's hard to like get into that feeling when you're not used to doing this. But one way you can pretend is by visualizing while you're doing something that makes you feel happy. Or like put on a song. You know how there's certain songs we all have that like make us feel good. They give you the goosebumps. Put on that song and sit there and close your eyes and visualize what you want. And that's going to give you a good feeling. Your brain doesn't know that you're getting a good feeling from the song. Like it's just, but it's attaching it to that vision. Or like sip your warm cup of coffee in the morning and like visualize. I'm so excited.
Lizzie Smiley
It's the feeling. It's the feeling. And here's here, let me give this example because some people are like me and they're really practical and it took me a while to get into the woo. And first of all, I'm going to tell you if this is uncomfortable for you, first of all, you probably need it even more because I'm like you. But you have to discipline yourself. You have to train your brain. Think about like my toddler, he's learning how to talk. We say the same phrases over and over and over like a million times before he's actually saying them. Right. My daughter, when she learned how to read, it was like repetition. And at first I'm like, man, this isn't working. Is there something wrong with her? Because I hadn't parented or taught before. No. We had to repeat it for months and months and months. This is how we learn. Think of it super, super practical. And in terms of the energy I want you to imagine, have you ever gone somewhere and there was somebody there who had the most beautiful energy? Maybe they were super friendly and welcoming and it just pulled up the energy of the whole room. Or maybe they were like super calm and peaceful and you came in the room feeling a little on edge and they immediately made you feel peaceful. Energy is magnetic. It attracts things to. It attracts people, it attracts other energy. Have you ever been around someone who's just in the worst mood ever? What do you want to do? Get away from them as fast as possible or you drag down with them. So we think this is all super woo woo. But we could look really practically in our lives. Energy is magnetic. It's either going to pull you up or pull you down. And so the more that you train your brain to feel the way that you want to feel, the more it will rewire, just like it does to learn how to read or speak, to feel that way. And if you think about it, if you're in a really negative space, do good things tend to happen? No. Like, oh, have you guys, have you ever had a clumsy day where, like, you get out of the bed in the morning and the first thing you stub your toe and you feel like all day you're klutzy? Right? Like, it's so true. So these things, they like tumbleweed and they grow like a. Like a snow, Like a snowball. So if you want faster results, you have to focus on removing your roadblocks. Some of them are going to be very practical and it's going to be things like systems and strategy, which we talk about all the time here. Maybe improving your workspace to make it more, you know, less distracting, more inspiring, and some of it's going to be how you think. Are you someone who constantly overanalyzes and so you don't get listings up because you're too stuck in trying to decide which ones to do? Or maybe you're someone who procrastinates. It feels so overwhelming to take that next step that you don't do it. Or maybe you're someone who self sabotages and so you're so afraid of failing or being judged or being seen that you don't really put yourself and your work out there. These are all mindset blocks that this. I'm trying to. What I'm trying to convey is why this matters, why it's more than just feeling ethereal. Woo. Which, by the way, I'm here for. So the whole point of developing mindset is so that you can trust yourself is really at the. At the bottom of it. What do you think about that, Jenny?
Jenny
Yeah, I absolutely agree with all that. And I just had the thought too. Like, I'm so glad you guys, you know, you come to us and you say how much you enjoy these podcasts and everything. The Mindset podcast. But I really am excited for this live event because I feel like, like there's going to be like a moment at a time at the end of the event. I think we'll probably put it at the end where we allow, like, questions or answers or thoughts, comments or whatever. And that's what I'm really excited about because I. I'm excited to hear your, like, limiting beliefs right now or things that are blocking you or holding you back, because it's going to bring me back to the times that I had those thoughts I guarantee you, like, all of your thoughts I've had before and Lizzie has had before and we might not remember because we've strengthened so much since then, but I know you're gonna bring me right back and I'm going to be able to tell you how I navigated through it. And I just feel like I'm going to be able to help you so much more when we're in that live setting. Do you feel that way too, Lizzie? Like, I just want to help them so much more by having that more like one on one interaction.
Lizzie Smiley
I love it because sometimes we get so stuck we don't even know how to reframe a thought. I mean, I know, like, I'm teaching my daughter right now. Like, she'll struggle with anxiety and she'll come to me and she'll be like, I'm afraid I'm gonna, you know, stop breathing or whatever. And first of all, I'll make a joke, lighten it. I'll say, oh, really? When was the last time that happened? And she's like, oh, never. You know? And I'm like, that's a thought. And we don't have to believe every thought that comes into our head. So I love that we can reframe things for you guys, but I also love that you get to borrow our energy. There is an energy exchange that happens. Yes. Right now you're getting it listening to us. There's a level of it, but it's completely different when we're doing activations together. It's not just us talking. It's you working when you're working through it with us, elbows in the dirt together. That's where the magic happens, I think.
Jenny
Yeah, I agree for sure.
Lizzie Smiley
Do you know what I'd love to talk about? I think we should talk about the messy middle, because I think entrepreneurship seems so flashy, you know, like, we think about. I don't know. And I know this could be controversial. Like, Taylor Swift tends to be a great example and, like, how amazing it must be to be her. And she has so much fame and people are obsessed with her. And it seems like everything she touches turns to gold. She's so wealthy. She's such a artistic genius, whatever it is. And yet the majority of Taylor's time isn't sexy on stage, isn't even necessarily sitting at her piano writing. Although I bet even that could be really hard sometimes. But she is, like, working out. She is pushing her body. She is practicing that song for the millionth time. We're obsessed with it. We get Goosebumps. She's like, can I please do something new? I've done this same song a million. You know what I mean?
Jenny
Yes. Yes.
Lizzie Smiley
So I want to talk about the messy middle, because it's just. Oh, I have another example. So next door, they just left. But when we're in Texas for part of the time, there's a famous Canadian rodeo guy who lives next door. He brings his family. We're obsessed with them. They're precious. You should go follow them on social media. It's Zeke Thurston and Jane Thurston. It's A J A Y N E. They're the most wonderful people you'll ever meet. He literally rides bucking horses for a living. And he's one of the best in the world.
Jenny
That's so cool.
Lizzie Smiley
It is so cool. And the idea. You won't look at his Instagram. It looks so glamorous. He is, like, in the spotlight on this fucking bronc, making crazy money. You know what I saw every day? Those guys lugging bales of hay, walking through manure, mucking out stalls, tacking, untacking, washing horses, trailering horses to the vet. Like, it was not sexy.
Jenny
You know, like, that's a perfect example.
Lizzie Smiley
Right. So the messy middle. Jenny, what do we want to say about it, man?
Jenny
Like, you know, with any. Like you said, with anybody who's successful in anything they do, they're going to have to do. Sorry if that's motorcycle is caught on here. I live in a noisy city in Aladmeyer.
Lizzie Smiley
We barely heard it.
Jenny
Yeah, so anyone who's successful or working towards success, you're. You have to do boring things, like, over and over and over again. You have. Like, it's just part of it. It's just part of it. So to know that now, like, when you're starting to get into the journey, like, you need to be able to accept. You need to be able to accept that it's going to. There's going to be a messy middle and that you're going to have to do boring things over and over and over again to get really good at it. And then even when you are really good at it, need to continue doing these boring things over and over again. And you're not going to feel like it. I mean, like, you're not going to feel like it, but, I mean, if you want to be successful, you got to keep going. And like, my favorite saying recently is, follow the plan, not your mood. So, you know, you get up. You don't feel like doing listings today when that was on your agenda. You. You got to follow the plan and not your mood if you want to be successful with this. And that's basically my little piece of advice for that.
Lizzie Smiley
I just, I think that the other thing I want to say is that just like Taylor, just like Zeke Thurston, and just like you and me, the messy middle doesn't end. It's an ongoing cycle. You launch something new. You muck through doing the hard work, the things you don't necessarily want to do, not knowing what results it's going to get, not being, if you're. When you get wise about it, not being too attached, holding loosely to your with the results that you want, and then. And then hopefully having a victory. But if not, cycling back again, new, something new, messy middle, Working through it and then admiring or analyzing the results. And it's a part of the process that doesn't go away. So if you sit there and you wrestle with yourself, I don't know if I can do this. I don't know if this is going to work. I don't know if all those stories I heard were just fabricated. I don't know if I know what I'm doing. I want to suggest you, you might ask yourself different questions, like, literally abandon those altogether because this slog, you are going to have this slog ongoing for as long as you're an entrepreneur. I want you to ask instead, where are my mindset blocks? What thoughts do I need to correct? What skills do I need to give myself? Where do I need to level up? Stop asking if it works and start asking who you need to become to make it work? And that, to me, is the pathway through. I think we need to normalize that. Everyone, no matter their level of success, has a messy middle, has times where it doesn't work out, has to discipline themselves to do things that aren't fun or sexy.
Jenny
Yes, I still go through it. And I'm what, like four or five year. I. I always forget what I'm on, like year four or year five now. I don't know. But, like, I get so much anxiety when I have to do taxes still. And that kind of stuff I so much dislike when I have to deal with. You're laughing, but, like, I do.
Lizzie Smiley
Yeah, but I.
Jenny
But I'm not gonna be like, oh, higher tax bracket now I gotta pay more in taxes. I'm not gonna do this. I'm. Do you believe it? Like, guys, I've gotten that comment before. Like, I don't need to be in a higher tax bracket because that Means more taxes. Okay, well, then sit there and make less money. Like, that's what your thoughts are going to make you broke. And we have to push through and figure these things out. And it's hard. Like, I am not a business person, and I've had to kind of become one. I'm like the. I don't want to use the word laziest, but, like, business person. I'm not. I'm like, the least businessy person I ever met because I cringe when it comes to that kind of stuff because it's messy to me and it's a lot of. It's over my head. But, like, I figure it out. And. Yeah, it takes me longer than the average person to figure it out. Like, but I figure it out. You know, just like in school, it took me longer than the average kid to learn a lot of things. Like, I literally couldn't read until, like, middle school. I'm not even kidding you. But then I ended up writing a book. Like, you know, I push through, things take me longer. But it's okay. It's not a race. It's not a race. This is the other thing I want to talk about. It's not a race. If you're in this. Yeah. Okay. Lizzie. Maybe Lizzie, like, popped off and went viral overnight. I'm not going to. I. I'm just hypothetically speaking here, like, you know, like, maybe you want to, like. Okay, let's say Linda. We were talking about Linda earlier. Let's say Linda.
Lizzie Smiley
Linda's my alter ego when I have poopy thinking is she's Linda. Sorry. If anyone out there is Linda, it's only because I had, like, a mean. A mean person in my life that you're wonder. I love Linda. Thank you.
Jenny
If you're listening. But yeah, we like to use names as an example. But anyways.
Lizzie Smiley
And I just want to use Karen, because that's mean. You know, I don't want to be like, I'm not trying to be mean or hurt. Karen's. You know, I just picked my own. Okay, keep going.
Jenny
So, yeah, random name ever that, like.
Lizzie Smiley
No one would ever have, but someone still has it. And I want them to know that I love them. And it's just because there was a mean Linda for me. So keep going.
Jenny
Okay, so let's just say a person now. Now I'm, like, so sidetracked, but okay. Okay. Basically is you don't. You don't want to find success right away in this business. Like, let's say you. Okay, you do, but you Don't. Let's say you put up your first listing. This would be very rare. It'd be like hitting the lottery. You put your first listing up and it immediately took off and you got bestseller badge and you're making thousands of dollars from it. That's crazy. That's your first listing. You have no idea why or how that happened. Okay, so then you put up your second listing and it makes zero sales. And you're so new to this, you have no clue why that first one took off. And then now the ones that you're putting up didn't take off. Whereas if in the long run, it takes you longer to figure this out, well, guess what? You're learning with every single listing that you put up. And you're eventually going to know exactly why you got a best seller on that 50th listing because you tested all these other things with all the other listings, and you know exactly how you got that bestseller. So now you can apply that to your next listing, and that's probably going to become a bestseller or close to it. So this isn't like a sprint. Something just fell in my. This isn't a. My. My desk agrees. It's not a race. It's not a race. It's okay if it takes you longer than person one. It's okay. You know, it's. It's.
Lizzie Smiley
And P.S. i am the person it takes longer for. I am the person who learns slower and who gets success faster and who took forever to learn how to design. Well, like, I love what you said about school, Jenny, because these two women that you're talking to that you respect and that we have really good results, we were not the one like my husband. He's the guy. We hate this. Believe me. He's the best man on the planet. He's the guy who went into tests and got a perfect score without studying. And what did I do? Studied my butt off for weeks to get a C. Do you know what I mean? Like, and. But I'll tell you what. My resilience, my ability to push through, my ability to hit new goals is off the charts because I learned how to discipline my disappointment early on. It was actually an asset to me. But, Jenny, you've got to tell us about the dip, too. That I thought that was such a cool thing you mentioned to me.
Jenny
Yes. So I'm pretty sure it's the title of a book. I'm going to be honest. I haven't read the book, but I'm going to, because this thought popped in my Head recently. I heard about it somewhere. I don't know if it was in a YouTube video or what. Definitely going to get this book. But so basically the diph.
Lizzie Smiley
Godin.
Jenny
Yes.
Lizzie Smiley
Okay, I'll link it. Guys.
Jenny
So basically the. And I'm gonna read it and maybe I'll talk about it in the mindset.
Lizzie Smiley
Maybe we need a mindset book club, Jenny. We might need to do something like this for sure.
Jenny
Guys. I've read so many books on mindset. I think that's why I'm so strong in that area too. Because it's been since like my early 20s that I started reading mindset books. Why? I don't know. I just liked them. But anyways, so the dip is. Pretty much everyone goes through the dip. And you don't even have to be someone who's like looking to start a business. It could be like any type of goal that you're working on, whether it's like your health or your wealth or starting a business. The dip is when you start getting those thoughts like, why did I even start this? The progress is slow. It doesn't feel exciting anymore. Why did I even start this? Am I wasting my time? All those negative thoughts that come up and maybe you experience some success but it like plateaued or you're not seeing consistent progress. Everyone experiences the dip and the thing that separates the person from being successful and the person that's not successful. The person that's successful pushes through these thoughts. They push through it and they keep going and they grow and they are the successful ones. But there's a lot of people that stop in that dip and they give up. And that's the thing that separates the two. So I want to read this book. I want to read this.
Lizzie Smiley
I think I want to read it. Let's read it together. I love Seth Godin. He's a. He's a genius. He's a savant. I think, you know, sometimes we get really ethereal about this around business. But anyone listening to this can. Can relate with the analogy of fitness or weight loss. And you. Let's say you have a fitness goal. I'm going to use weight loss because it tends to be more emotional. You have a weight loss goal. And for. And at first, typically we'll have good results at first because our body's like, oh, you're giving me what I really need and want and crave. And so you have a. You drop off. But then, I don't know. This always happens to me. Couple weeks in, I am on it. I am doing the things I'm drinking, the water, getting the sleep, eating right, moving my body, all the things that should be moving the needle and improving my health and improving and losing weight. You hit a plateau. Sometimes you stay there for weeks. And it can be so discouraging. And you're sitting there thinking, well, I guess I should. I mean, but here's the thing. Do you think I should just give up, this doesn't work. Or do you really just think this stinks? I wish I was getting results right now, but I know the only way is to keep going. And I just think we need to put that hat on when it comes to business instead of being like, this doesn't work. No, you have to keep going to the gym. And psychology, say again, go ahead, keep going. And P.S. when you reach your goal, you don't get to stop going to the gym or you're going to reverse the results you got. You still, even once you arrive, you still have to do that uncomfortable work. I think it gets easier, right? With time.
Jenny
But what you just said. I think not everybody does what you. So you said, okay, so what do I do? Do I. Do I stop? No, I just say, this stinks, and I keep going. But I think you're different than most people. I think, honestly, most people do stop and they get sidetracked and they're like, this isn't working. And then the next night, they're eating a bag of chips, watching Netflix. Like, I think that your mindset is stronger than most people, but don't they.
Lizzie Smiley
Logically know, like, that's not going to get them the result? And they just don't know.
Jenny
I don't know. I just feel I've seen it with people in my life where they just end up stopping and. And then it's like a yo, yo, you know, like, you try it again and then you stop and you try it again. And I think it's the same thing with Etsy sellers. Like, I've. I've had people who have followed me for years, and I remember their comments of starting, like, years ago and then their comments now. Like, I fell off and I. Now I want to get started again. Like, should I start a new one or should I, like, like, relist in my old one? And I'm like, why did you ever stop? But, like, that's. That's why. It's because of the dip. They stop.
Lizzie Smiley
Hey, side note, though, what do you say when people ask that? Do you tell them to start a new shop or do you tell them to relist?
Jenny
I I just list in your older shop because I had an older shop that I revived and same. It worked.
Lizzie Smiley
Yeah. So I love. I mean, there's usually so many different ways right to the top. So I was just curious what you had to say. Super interesting. Spoiler alert. You do have to keep watching what you eat, drinking water, getting sleep and going to the gym to keep losing weight. Just FYI. Just in case anyone was.
Jenny
Yes, you have to get your steps in. You got to drink your water. You got.
Lizzie Smiley
And when your business is not working and nothing you're designing is working and it's just not working, you do have to keep listing. And here's a great thing. You know what, when I hit a plateau in my weight loss, what do I do? I go watch transformational videos. That helps me keep going. I'll go watch before and afters. I'll go on TikTok and look for people with like healthy weight loss or for, you know, it even helps me healthy meal recipes. And I'll get re motivated. Maybe with Etsy, you need to learn something new. Your stuff isn't converting. Maybe you need an SEO masterclass, Maybe you need a design masterclass. Like, maybe you need to sharpen your skills. Maybe you just need to go watch some success stories or listen to a few podcast episodes to get you fired up again. And I think the next thing we wanted to talk about that I think is really good for this is you need to start thinking like a business owner and not like a hobbyist trying to make it. So it's this, it's this concept of the, the identity, your identity over your goals. Do goals matter? Yes, you need them, but it's again, the becoming your identity. I know you really like that, right, Jenny, about the thinking like a business owner. Talk to, talk to us about that one.
Jenny
Yeah. So this kind of like goes hand in hand with having your vision because, like, who are you envisioning when you're sitting there? Well, if you're, if you haven't practiced visual visualization yet, Lizzie and I can certainly touch on this in the mindset live. But typically when you're visualizing, you're thinking of that future you and what, like, what are you, what you want to do as that future you. So that kind of like ties into this. Like you're not going to be a hobbyist when you're that super successful version of you. You're going to be a business owner. And that, that feels uncomfortable to say probably. I know that because it felt uncomfortable for me to think about and Say, you know, especially when you have the voices of others telling you or saying to you like, oh, like Etsy's just for crafts or like how's your small business going? All the voice. Which is why I suggest just don't even tell anybody what you're doing, just until you're successful. Like that's what I did and it was really helpful because I'm somebody who takes like what people say and internalize it and like self sabotage from like what other people say. So I knew not to tell anybody about this. So yeah, number one, maybe just don't tell anybody and just continue to visualize who you want to be. But if you are going to talk to people, it's okay to tell them like, yes, I have an Etsy business. Even if you have a couple sales, like you have an Etsy business. Even if you just opened up your shop and you're starting to put listings in, you have an Etsy business. If you started a cute little boutique down the street, are you going to say, oh, I just make crafts? No, you're going to say, I have a boutique down the street now. I have a shop, I have a business. Same thing with this. You opened up a shop on Etsy. You're designing for it. Whether it's, whether it's print on demand, whether it's digital products, whether you're actually hand making things, like you're in the works of creating listings, you're a business owner. So you can claim that now. And it's important to claim that so that you know, like it's official. You're all in now. You're all in once you claim that. And it might feel uncomfortable in the beginning and you don't have to walk around, hey, I'm a business owner. Hey. But like, but you should just know deep down inside, like, I'm not just doing this for arts and crafts. I'm not just doing this as a hobby. I'm not just doing this to get a couple dollars on the side because you can get so much more. And when I first started this, I was like, I had that mindset. I was like, maybe all I wanted was like 30 extra dollars a month so I could get my nails done. Guys, 30 extra dollars a month. And I obtained that pretty quickly. And I was like, oh my God, that's amazing. And I kept saying, okay, now I'm going to, I want my car payment paid off. Boom. Soon my car payment was able to be paid off. Okay, now my mortgage paid off. Okay, now I want to move to Greece. So you need to think big because it's so possible. I feel so bad that I limited myself to that $30 a month and then I had those limiting beliefs. But I had to work through to realize that, like, it can be so much more for anybody. I'm not just lucky. I went through the messy middle. I did all the boring stuff. I had the anxiety of the taxes and the customer service. Like, my designs were awful. Like, I'm not just lucky. I promise you, it was strategy and it was my mindset. It was. And taking action and all of those things mixed together. And I don't remember what the first question was. I think I just went off on a tangent.
Lizzie Smiley
It was, it was beautiful, though. And, and I think if, if someone listening feels on edge, uncomfortable, you know, kind of like a. Is it a clam that develops a pearl or an oyster? If you sit there and you think, oh, but I don't even know if this is going to work out yet. That is proof right there. You need to just work on your mindset. Because when Warren Buffett goes to make a new property investment, do you think that he sits there and he goes, I'm going to try this thing and see if it works and just test it out a little bit? No. He confidently, I am a real estate investor and I'm about to make another billion dollars. Or Taylor Swift releasing a new album doesn't sit there and go, oh, gosh, I'm going to try this. I'm going to. I have a little hobby making music. No, And I understand those are crazy big examples because these are famous people. But the point is that someone who thinks like a professional thinks like a professional.
Jenny
Yeah.
Lizzie Smiley
And if you do not, then we need to adjust the way that you think. Because again, if you're sitting there thinking, I don't know if this is going to work, I challenge you to change the, change that to. I am someone who's going to make this work and I'm going to become the person who I need to, to make this work.
Jenny
However long it takes.
Lizzie Smiley
However long it takes. And you have to ditch victim mentality. It. It doesn't, it doesn't serve you. I know it sometimes feels good to blame the algorithm or blame the copycats or blame the Etsy fees or blame the. Whatever. Blame the people who had the really fast success and they must have lied to me. Well, are some people lying? Yeah. But actually know a lot of the Etsy YouTubers and they've got the receipts, you know, it's. Who do you need to become the mindset shift. And I want to. Actually, you touched on this earlier, Jenny, and I love that you brought up the visualization. Some people probably think, what's the point of visualization? And when we were talking at the very beginning about how what you are trying to chase is a feeling. And I know that in our culture, actually, I guess right now we're pretty big on feeling and what do you feel? So when you are trying to transform your life, you want to latch onto. It's not about, I want a million dollars. It's about, I want to feel unlimited. I want to have freedom, I want to have abundance, I want to have peace of mind. Those are the things you really want. The money is just the vehicle to get you there. And so when you. When you do visualization techniques, it helps to train your brain to stay in that frequency. Thoughts are. Thoughts are energy. And if you want to uplevel your life, you have to stay at a higher energy frequency in your thoughts more of the time. Things like meditation, visualizations, affirmations, these are tools that we use to bring ourselves high vibe. And the goal is to be as high vibe again, that good energy space. I hope I'm making sense, Jenny.
Jenny
Yes, yes, for sure.
Lizzie Smiley
Good energy space as much of the time as possible. Your job in mindset training is to get to where you feel like that unlimited person, where everything is movable, nothing is in your way. Any goal you can achieve, you need to feel that way as much of the time as physically possible. And yes, that's very hard. In the beginning, you're going to feel like it doesn't work at all. Sometimes in the beginning, even those, those meditations or affirmations, you might even feel worse because you're like, well, I'm saying this, and it's literally never going to happen. And that's the most important time to keep going. So you can get to the point where you're maintaining. I've got chills. You're maintaining that high vibration more of the time. And you know what? Let me tell you this one thing. Even if you never get your goals, which by the way, is impossible if you do this, even if you never get your goals, it will be worth it to feel so good all of the time. It clears up your mental health, it clears up your physical health, it clears up your relational health. Jenny, I can feel you've got something to say. Take it.
Jenny
No, no, no, Keep going.
Lizzie Smiley
You're.
Jenny
You're good. You're good.
Lizzie Smiley
I just think. I think that this part, like to be honest, I'm gonna be honest with you guys. The part of the becoming is the best part of all. Especially as someone who's dealt with mental health issues since I was a child with like anxiety and fear and lack of self confidence. The becoming someone who looks back on that child with just compassion and love and says I wish she could see me now. I wish she could know what this, how this turns out and how I am happy all the time and I am high vibe the majority of the time and if I'm not a call Jenny and how I, I'm able to get the things that I always thought I'd never have. So it's, it's, it's the best part.
Jenny
I love it.
Lizzie Smiley
Can you tell? Can you tell I love it.
Jenny
It's so true, Lizzy. I, I love that so much. I resonate with that wholeheartedly. Because you're gonna become someone you didn't realize like existed or like you become. No, you know what? I think it's like you become more in alignment with who you truly are.
Lizzie Smiley
Yes.
Jenny
Start to like put yourself first and, and selfishly like, and it should, and it shouldn't be selfish. Like you're working on yourself to make you a better person which in turn is going to make everyone around you a better person. You know like do you ever hear that saying like I don't know exactly the saying but like an unhealthy mom. Oh isn't going to be able to like take care of their children basically.
Lizzie Smiley
Or like yes, do your self care because if you are taking care of you, you'll be an even better mom and you can't afford not to.
Jenny
Yes. And it's so true, like it's so, so true with that. But that's the same thing like in your. Sorry, I'm like playing with my hands and I'm excited so I'm like move my hands. But it's the same thing. Like if you're working on yourself and you are becoming a better person, the people around you are going to feel that and in turn become a better person as well. And like as you were talking you might have heard my typing but I got excited about what you're saying because there's an actual frequency chart. Have you heard about the like the frequency chart?
Lizzie Smiley
Talk about it girl. This is my jam.
Jenny
I just. Which we can go into more and if this is too woo woo for you guys, let us know because we'll tone it down a bit. But if you're thinking it's a Good balance.
Lizzie Smiley
It's a good. It's a good balance.
Jenny
If you're, like, loving this, then maybe we'll go all in. But there's this, like, chart. Okay, See? It's really pretty.
Lizzie Smiley
It's like a cone. And it has the rainbow colors, like, purple at the top of the cone, all the way down to red.
Jenny
Yes. So frequency is a real thing, guys. So, like, our. You know, we can't see it. It's something that you can't see. See? And I should get a little bit more versed in this so I can explain it better. I wasn't expecting to talk about this, but I'm gonna just explain the best I can and quickly. So a low frequency is 20, and that's the feeling of shame. Okay. And then there's guilt and apathy and grief and fear. And even desire is a negative frequency when you're so, like, wanting something so bad.
Lizzie Smiley
Energy, yes.
Jenny
The desperate energy is a low frequency. And, you know, anger, even pride, courage, it is starting to get a little bit higher. But we go all the way up to the highest, and that's enlightenment. Seven hundred and six hundred is peace, and 540 is joy, and 500 is love. So you get to a higher frequency. And, like, Lizzie was explaining if you're vibing, you know, vibration, people. People say, like, oh, it's a vibe, or I'm vibing out. Like, that has to do with this. I don't know if they know that. But, like, basically, if you are vibing in a frequency of love and joy and peace, you're in that high frequency where, like, not so much negativity is going to happen to you. Like, yes, like, circumstances, unfortunate circumstances can still happen when you're high vibing. Like, I literally. I feel like I am in, like, love, joy, and peace. Like, I feel that I'm really high up there. Not too much can shake me. Old me. I was like, fear 100, you know, like, anxiety, like, not really guilt and shame for anything. But I would. Desire was huge. And it doesn't feel good to be in those lower frequencies. And, like, more negative things will happen because you're, like. You're having anxious thoughts about something which typically is going to bring, like, anxious situations around you. Whereas if you're, like, in love and peace, you can typically find the positive in negative situations. Or as soon as, like, that negative thought comes in, you can, like, turn it around and be like, goodbye, Linda. Love you, Linda, if you're listening. But you could be like, goodbye, Linda. You know, like, and change Your and shift your thoughts. So frequency is a real thing. Like it's the real deal. So. And your whole thing just like got me thinking about that chart. You could just type in. If you guys want to see it yourself, just type in frequency chart and Google and there's plenty of images where you can like see this and learn about it yourself.
Lizzie Smiley
And so just like kind of pull us into a little more practical for a few minutes because they go together. So I can't just be pie in the sky clouds all the time and never take any action and get the results. I also think that my results are limited. If I am just a workhorse driving, driving, driving all of the time and I don't lighten my mental load. They go together very symbiotically. So the actual actions that create a six figure Etsy seller are consistency, doing, doing things, routines, systems, activities that don't rely on how you feel. So you're not sitting there asking. A six figure seller doesn't ask themselves if they feel like creating listings each day. Do I feel creative? Do I feel like it? Do I have the time for it? They just do it whether they feel like it or not. Just like going to the gym, cleaning your home, taking care of a young child. That is so real. We don't do these things well if we only do them when we feel like it.
Jenny
Yeah.
Lizzie Smiley
So it's the action. Taking action creates clarity, clarity creates confidence. Confidence creates consistency.
Jenny
Yes.
Lizzie Smiley
So it's making yourself do that. And then the last one we wrote. Do you want to say anything on that, Jenny?
Jenny
No, no, no, that's perfect.
Lizzie Smiley
It's amazing how we find so much to talk about. We won't hit all of these, but we've got next month's episode. So I think we should probably end on like detach from outcomes and attach to the process. So I know you'll have some great things to say on this, but like, sales aren't the only sign of progress. You talked about this with your book A little bit.
Jenny
Yeah.
Lizzie Smiley
What can we track? Things that we can track.
Jenny
Yeah. So I used to track things like how many listings I was putting up each month because like I held myself accountable to be taking that action and I knew that I was working towards my goals. Every listing that I put up. So I, I mean you said you set the goal for you that like, you know, you can handle. Like, don't overwhelm yourself. Maybe like, I don't want to tell you a listing goal to, to do, but I'll tell you like some months in here. Like I was like, okay, you're gonna hit a thousand listings by. I do print on demand by the way. So that's different for like the handmade sellers that are listening.
Lizzie Smiley
Yeah, handmade is gonna have to do less. They don't have to put out as many listings as print on demand or digital.
Jenny
Right. And also my mindset has shifted since then. But this is just an example. Like I honestly am more towards quantity than. More towards quality than quantity now. But in the beginning I didn't really know like I was more quantity than quality because I was testing all the different ways that we're working. And then I would build my shop off of what was selling. But now I'm more quality over quantity just because I pretty much, I'm good at figuring out what sells now. But younger me wasn't. So anyways, I was more quantity. So I said that I wanted. Where is it? My notes are like chicken scratch.
Lizzie Smiley
Guys, do you have good handwriting? I've always wondered that.
Jenny
No, it's awful.
Lizzie Smiley
I expected you to have Disney princess handwriting.
Jenny
No, I wish I've practiced.
Lizzie Smiley
And same Girl, I have doctor handwriting.
Jenny
For whatever reason, I said that I needed 472 listings by February. I don't know why 472. But I met that goal and ended up doing 500 listings. And then I wanted 700 listings by March. So that meant I had to do 200 listings from February to March. And that was a lot for me, guys. I was a full time teacher and.
Lizzie Smiley
Like a new mom in one month or two months.
Jenny
In one month from February to March, I had to do 200 listings so that I could get to 700 listings. And my goal, I wanted to hit 1,000 listings by. By April.
Lizzie Smiley
That's 6. 6.6 listings a day is 200amonth. So if you wanted to be aggressive, I mean Bailey talks about she used to do 20 a day when she was like full time pushing it hard. But I like five a day if you're trying to hit results within six months.
Jenny
There were times where I did 20 to like, I'm not even kidding. I think I did like my Max was 51 times.
Lizzie Smiley
I was like crazy in a day.
Jenny
Yeah. But my thing was it would be five design. Let's say like five designs.
Lizzie Smiley
Exactly.
Jenny
And it the products that I was putting up. But now I don't just like throw up any. I don't want to confuse you guys with the Etsy stuff because I do things differently now. But like that's how I would get 10 like 50 listings up. Because it would be five designs on 10 different products. I don't do that way.
Lizzie Smiley
Yeah, well, and that's the thing. So when I'm teaching I'll say, okay, let's say you're trying to do five a day. You're really creating three designs and you're putting them on two different mockup. You're a b testing them. You're putting them on two different mock ups or having two different thumbnails to test against each other or you're keeping the same thumbnail and you're changing out your SEO. So you're really just creating three designs. Well, that gives you one extra listing towards tomorrow. That's not. It doesn't seem as crazy when you think about it that way.
Jenny
Right, right. But yeah, so like I, but I would get excited about hitting those listing goals and yeah, get off and like I had some friends that were doing this too and we would hold each other accountable. We would be like actually most of you probably know, but Cassie Johnson was my, one of my day one besties with this and Angel Passive income Angel. And we would tell each other our goals for the month and like at the end of the month, you know, say if we did it or not. And it held. Held us accountable.
Lizzie Smiley
That was a powerhouse cohort then because all three of you have become a huge Etsy sellers and be really amazing teachers in the space. Like you're three of you guys and Heather, so much trust. And I.
Jenny
And then we met Heather and now it's just so much fun. We didn't know Heather in the beginning of our Etsy days, but we're close with Heather now and it's been really fun to like all connect and. But, but yeah, it helps to have people hold you accountable too.
Lizzie Smiley
So maybe you can find people on the Facebook group. I think we should do a post and people who. I'll, I'll link the Facebook group. I need to make a note of that. But so here's the deal. If this, if, if this is speaking to you, resonating with you, pulling you deeper, you feel like this is an area you need to level up or this is something you're really passionate about, you want to get in our space and work through some of these things in a more of a workshop setting. This is where our energy and space is. We are both at levels and our kids also got a little bit older. That helped out a lot.
Jenny
