Grizz Sibonek
People say a man is made out of mud A poor man's made out of muscle and blood Muscle and blood and skin and bones. A mind that's a weak and a bat that's strong.
Pao Punieban
You load 16 tons, what do you get?
Maurice Thomas
Another day older and deeper in debt. St. Peter, don't you call me.
Tabitha Bardal
Cause I can go I owe my.
Maurice Thomas
Soul to the company's store. Ha. These were worth it, you know.
Tabitha Bardal
You gave them a fingerprint? Silver.
Maurice Thomas
I got nine more.
Pao Punieban
We should leave the case outside overnight. You know, so they get cold.
Maurice Thomas
Yes.
Grizz Sibonek
It's been a while since I've heard you so enthusiastic about something.
Maurice Thomas
I love Coke.
Tabitha Bardal
It's not Coke, though.
Maurice Thomas
What do you mean?
Tabitha Bardal
It's orange soda.
Maurice Thomas
Nobody calls it soda.
Tabitha Bardal
I do. That's what it's called.
Pao Punieban
I always called it Pop.
Tabitha Bardal
Yeah, you're all wrong.
Grizz Sibonek
Whatever, dude.
Pao Punieban
Whoa. Check that thing out.
Tabitha Bardal
Where?
Grizz Sibonek
Dang. I almost miss it. Through the trees, it blends in with the mountains. It's this huge slanted stack of metal boxes punched with little dark windows. There's streaks of rust running down the side, like it's bleeding orange. I wonder if it would suck me in if I got too close.
Tabitha Bardal
What is that?
Grizz Sibonek
Looks like a factory.
Maurice Thomas
Probably an old mining operation.
Tabitha Bardal
Mining?
Grizz Sibonek
Yeah.
Pao Punieban
No wonder we dug up the folk.
Grizz Sibonek
It's so ugly and creepy and huge.
Maurice Thomas
Oh, there were bigger buildings than this before things went south.
Tabitha Bardal
Copper, maybe. I'm glad I don't remember.
Maurice Thomas
I'm gonna draw it.
Tabitha Bardal
Can I watch?
Maurice Thomas
Of course, darling.
Grizz Sibonek
You guys ever think about what they took?
Pao Punieban
What do you mean?
Grizz Sibonek
In exchange for our memories.
Maurice Thomas
I think forgetting was just a part of it all.
Grizz Sibonek
I don't. I think we traded them for something and we just don't remember.
Pao Punieban
Maybe we traded them for staying alive and staying human.
Grizz Sibonek
Bad idea. Should have let them turn me into a frog.
Maurice Thomas
Amber.
Grizz Sibonek
Sorry.
Maurice Thomas
It's all right. Just make sure.
Grizz Sibonek
Talk like that doesn't leave the car. I know. I know. I was just kidding.
Tabitha Bardal
That looks really good, Silver.
Maurice Thomas
Thank you.
Tabitha Bardal
You remember all those details from just one look?
Maurice Thomas
Sticks in your brain, I guess.
Grizz Sibonek
Silver's right. I'm glad I'm not driving because I know I'd be tempted to stare at it. Through the trees, I can see piles of construction, trash and chunks of abandoned buildings. The original must have been dropping pieces of itself through the woods. Did you guys hear that?
Maurice Thomas
Look. Still going.
Tabitha Bardal
The mining Building.
Maurice Thomas
See that square doorway over there in that hill?
Tabitha Bardal
Yeah.
Maurice Thomas
That's how you get in the mine.
Tabitha Bardal
Creepy.
Grizz Sibonek
What was that? You heard it that time, right?
Pao Punieban
It's probably fine.
Grizz Sibonek
No, it was making noise earlier. Glass. Pull over. Pull over?
Pao Punieban
Yep.
Grizz Sibonek
Hell, no. No, no, no, no, no, no.
Tabitha Bardal
What's going on?
Grizz Sibonek
I don't know, Copper. I'm going to have to get out and check.
Pao Punieban
You want backup?
Grizz Sibonek
No. I'll be fast. You guys didn't bury my toolkit again, did you?
Maurice Thomas
Should be in the front of the trunk, above the tire.
Grizz Sibonek
Where did you say it was?
Maurice Thomas
Above the left tire.
Grizz Sibonek
Got it.
Pao Punieban
I'm going to do a reading.
Tabitha Bardal
We're stopped awfully close to another part of that mining plant.
Maurice Thomas
Copper, why don't we go set up a ward outside, just in case?
Tabitha Bardal
Okay. Shouldn't there be birds out by this time of year?
Maurice Thomas
It's still cold. Maybe they're asleep.
Tabitha Bardal
I don't like it. It's creepy here.
Maurice Thomas
Amber, I've got it.
Grizz Sibonek
I'll figure it out. Just give me a minute.
Maurice Thomas
Did you check the sigil?
Grizz Sibonek
Yeah, I read the sigils because that's a thing I've always been able to do.
Maurice Thomas
Want me to look at them for you?
Grizz Sibonek
I'm just gonna fix it the normal way, Silver. I don't need your dumb magic.
Pao Punieban
Uh, hey, you guys want to hear the cards I drew?
Maurice Thomas
I'd love to.
Pao Punieban
Okay, there's a door to a mine shaft. And then. This is our car. This one's just black.
Maurice Thomas
Does that mean something in the mine shaft could help us fix the car?
Pao Punieban
That's one interpretation.
Tabitha Bardal
I don't know. Going in there seems kind of precarious.
Grizz Sibonek
I'm rooting around in the guts of this car, and I can't find anything wrong. Which is very cool. And it's cold, like Silver said, Makes working on the metal hurt. My fingers love this. Having a really great time with this wonderful car.
Maurice Thomas
Everything all right, darling?
Grizz Sibonek
It's fine. I'll get it.
Tabitha Bardal
I have one packet of lights, but if you want to.
Grizz Sibonek
Yeah, I could really use your magic light, Copper. I'm literally holding a flashlight. They're just being condescending.
Tabitha Bardal
Sorry, Amber.
Pao Punieban
Chill.
Grizz Sibonek
Ask your new soulmate if I'll chill.
Pao Punieban
What kind of bug got up your ass?
Grizz Sibonek
I don't have a bug up my ass. I just think it's funny how you're spending so much time focusing on them instead of us.
Pao Punieban
What are you talking about? I live with you.
Grizz Sibonek
Anyone want to take bets on how long that's going to last before you Run off with a fish folk.
Pao Punieban
Hey, did I do something to you? Are you gonna tell me what?
Tabitha Bardal
Hey, we have bigger things to focus on right now.
Grizz Sibonek
Sorry, Copper. I'm just stressed out.
Pao Punieban
Yeah, sorry, Squeaker.
Maurice Thomas
We could take a look at that mine.
Tabitha Bardal
Chef, I don't want to go in there.
Pao Punieban
It's either that or wait and see. If Amber can fix the car, I.
Grizz Sibonek
Can fix the dang car. Glass.
Tabitha Bardal
If we're going at all, we're going together. We can use Silver's protection. Sigil and I have light spells and a fire spell just in case.
Maurice Thomas
I'll get the marker.
Grizz Sibonek
If you guys would just give me more time, I can figure out what's wrong.
Pao Punieban
Look, we appreciate you looking into it, Amber, but I don't think we can spare any extra time.
Maurice Thomas
All right, y'all, give me your hands.
Grizz Sibonek
Amber, don't wait up. I'll hang back and see if I can work this out.
Maurice Thomas
It's all of us or none of us.
Tabitha Bardal
Please come with us, Amber.
Pao Punieban
We're not gonna be gone that long.
Grizz Sibonek
Fine. It's not like you're going to find anything in there.
Maurice Thomas
There. Y'all ready to go?
Pao Punieban
Let's go.
Grizz Sibonek
It's dark inside. Abandoned. I can't even see past a couple feet. We don't even know how far back it goes. And it smells not like gas. It smells like whatever died in there got taken out weeks ago. But the stink won't leave. We should just live here.
Maurice Thomas
Stay together, y'all.
Grizz Sibonek
Isn't that the point of your sigil?
Maurice Thomas
My sigil keeps folks from separatin us. It don't keep anybody from wandering off. So don't wander off.
Pao Punieban
I doubt anybody will be wandering off. Look, there's only one corridor.
Grizz Sibonek
There are two. We just passed another hallway, branching off, spidering into the dark. I don't bother correcting them, though. Doesn't really matter.
Tabitha Bardal
Did you bring your cards?
Pao Punieban
Of course.
Grizz Sibonek
Of course.
Maurice Thomas
Maybe take another reading.
Pao Punieban
I don't know if it's gonna give us something different.
Tabitha Bardal
Remind me what you got last time?
Pao Punieban
Car Mine shaft. Door one. That was just black.
Tabitha Bardal
Did.
Grizz Sibonek
Did you hear that?
Pao Punieban
I didn't hear anything.
Maurice Thomas
Yeah, nothing but us.
Grizz Sibonek
Someone is calling you. Finally. All right, hang back. Hang back.
Tabitha Bardal
It kind of smells in here.
Maurice Thomas
Keep your eyes peeled for ambles, too, y'all.
Grizz Sibonek
I stop. I listen for the sound again. And the others keep going. But I hang back. I'm just going to look. Only for a second. It should be darker. Shouldn't it be darker? I don't even have a flashlight. Why can I still see it. Doesn't look like a mine anymore. There's no supports, no unlit lamps on the walls. The ground under my shoes feels slick all of a sudden. I think it's blood at first, but it's grease. Motor oil. It's empty. Feels like I belong here. Whoa. The walls are metal now. Smooth and rigid. And all made out of sharp angles and pistons and sliding plates. It's cold, so I don't introduce myself just to be safe. There's something inside the machinery. Something that gives off a cold, white light. It could fix the car, I think. You again? What are you doing here? I thought I left you behind. Yeah. Were you the one calling me in here? No, nothing's calling you. But I heard. You didn't hear anything. Why are you here? Why are you here? Something is wrong with the car. And you can't figure it out. Where's everybody else? They went to look for something else. It's happening again then, isn't it? Glass seemed really mad at us. Yeah, well, I was being a shithead, so. They have magic. You should just go back and wait for them to fix it. You're just going to bog them down like usual. Why are you here? What do you mean? Like in your head. I saw you once at a rest stop. Now you're in an abandoned mine. Why? Those things aren't connected. I don't know. Maybe I'm magic. No, you're not. You're not useful. There isn't any reason for you to be here. I'm looking out for you. Yeah? How are you doing that? I'm trying to keep you from doing anything stupid because you might do something stupid in here. What kind of stupid thing would I do in here? There's a light in there. I think it could let me fix the car. If I reached in for it. You might do something you regret. To try and get magic to fix the car. There's got to be something I can use. There's something bright inside the machine. I could fit my hand in there. Your whole arm, even. What is in there? Magic, maybe. You could probably reach it. Magic enough to fix the car? Maybe. Magic enough to help my friends. It's possible. Magic enough to keep them from leaving. I'm here so you won't do anything stupid. I'm not doing anything stupid. No. I reach in almost all the way up to my shoulder. I can feel a faint vibration through the metal. I'm going to help them. I'll pay whatever I need to. I reach my fingers out as far As I can. I feel my fingers wrap around the light. Where are you? Did. Did it work? Did I get it? I don't feel any different. I don't feel any different. Why don't I feel any different? I don't understand. I need to go back. Silver. It didn't work, Copper. You knew you wouldn't get it, didn't you? Glass. You didn't do this for them. You did it so they would feel sorry for you. No. So they'd pity you too much to leave. Leave me alone. You're lost. You're never getting out of here. And they're never going to look for you. Shut up. They don't want you. I don't care. They're going to leave you again, just like Mom. I don't care.
Pao Punieban
Amber. What happened?
Grizz Sibonek
Where were you? Where'd they go?
Pao Punieban
Are you okay? We turned around and you were gone. We've been looking everywhere for you.
Grizz Sibonek
I'm sorry, Glass. I'm sorry.
Pao Punieban
Sorry for what?
Grizz Sibonek
Amber, your arm. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to.
Maurice Thomas
Never mind that. Let me see Glass. Move. I need to look at. Oh. Come on. Back toward the entrance.
Tabitha Bardal
What happened? Where did you go?
Maurice Thomas
Come on. Almost there.
Grizz Sibonek
I can't feel my hand.
Maurice Thomas
It don't look like a bad break. You're gonna be all right, Amber.
Pao Punieban
Please tell us what happened.
Grizz Sibonek
Nothing. Nothing happened. I got lost and I fell.
Maurice Thomas
Put your other arm over my shoulders, darling. I could carry you better.
Grizz Sibonek
I didn't mean to.
Tabitha Bardal
Are they gonna be okay?
Maurice Thomas
Just keep walking.
Pao Punieban
Amber, you've gotta tell us what happened.
Grizz Sibonek
I already told you. I fell.
Maurice Thomas
I don't believe that for a second, darling.
Tabitha Bardal
Should we use the wound ritual for this?
Pao Punieban
I can stay with him, Silver, and go set up the medical stuff.
Maurice Thomas
Good idea, Copper.
Tabitha Bardal
Yeah, yeah. I'll go get it.
Pao Punieban
I've got him. I've got him.
Maurice Thomas
Wait here. We'll come to you.
Pao Punieban
You've got to tell me the truth, Amber.
Grizz Sibonek
It doesn't matter. It didn't work anyway.
Pao Punieban
What didn't work anyway?
Grizz Sibonek
I was trying to help. I was trying to fix the car.
Pao Punieban
But he already tried fixing the car. Was. Was that the engine?
Tabitha Bardal
Silver. It's working.
Pao Punieban
Amber, tell me you didn't.
Grizz Sibonek
Yeah, it did. We needed to fix it.
Pao Punieban
Was this the Winters? Did you ask a Winter for this?
Grizz Sibonek
It worked, didn't it?
Pao Punieban
Look at your arm. You could have died. We had it handled. We could have found something to fix it. You didn't need to.
Grizz Sibonek
Yes, I did need to. All I can do is fix the stupid car. That's the only thing I bring to the table. It's all I've got. If I can't do that, I'll be dead weight. And you'll leave me. And you'll be right to leave me. You all have magic. Your own magic that you don't have to pay for, so you know you're not going to be left behind. But I have to fight for this. And if I can't do my one job without magic, I'll do it with whatever shreds of it I can get. And I'll break as many bones as I need to. I'm not getting left behind again.
Pao Punieban
Do you really think that'll of us? You think we'd abandon you if you didn't fix the dump car? We don't care about you being useful, Amber. We. We care about you.
Grizz Sibonek
You were different before you got magic. You used to like me more before Aster came along.
Pao Punieban
I'm sorry, Amber. A lot has been happening for me. Maybe. Maybe I have been acting different. But I never meant to make you feel like you were being replaced. I'm sorry that I did.
Grizz Sibonek
Really.
Pao Punieban
I really care about you, okay? It doesn't matter to me if you're useful or not. That's not why I like being around you. I never leave you.
Grizz Sibonek
How am I supposed to be certain of that?
Pao Punieban
I don't think you can be.
Grizz Sibonek
What?
Pao Punieban
I don't think you can ever be completely certain that we'll be around forever. You can't read minds, right? You just have to take our word for it.
Grizz Sibonek
But that sucks.
Pao Punieban
Yeah. Kinda does. I guess we've all got to choose between the pain of being alone and the pain of not being alone.
Grizz Sibonek
They're lying.
Pao Punieban
Did you hear something?
Grizz Sibonek
They'll get tired of you eventually. Nope. Didn't hear anything.
Pao Punieban
Huh.
Grizz Sibonek
Besides, even if there was something to hear, it probably wasn't saying anything important.
Pao Punieban
All right.
Grizz Sibonek
My arm hurts.
Pao Punieban
Silver and Copper are coming.
Maurice Thomas
Stay right there, darling. We're bringing it to you.
Grizz Sibonek
I'm all right. I can make it to the car.
Tabitha Bardal
You're sure you can walk all that way?
Grizz Sibonek
That's my arm, not my leg.
Pao Punieban
Copper, do you need help getting up?
Grizz Sibonek
I. Yeah.
Pao Punieban
Okay. Take my arm. Let's go.
Maurice Thomas
How's the pain?
Grizz Sibonek
Starting to go numb. Probably a really great sign.
Maurice Thomas
We'll hurry. We can get everything set up quickly with all three of us.
Grizz Sibonek
You're not mad at me?
Maurice Thomas
No, Amber, I'm not mad at you.
Tabitha Bardal
I brought your water bottle.
Grizz Sibonek
Thanks, guys. 16 times. What do you get? Another day older and deeper in death. St. Peter, don't you call me Cause I can go I owe my.

Release Date: February 22, 2025
Overview
In Episode 26 of Hymns for the Road, titled "Amber's Magic," listeners delve deeper into the intricate dynamics of the four survivors navigating a fantastical post-apocalyptic America. This episode centers around Amber's attempt to repair their car using her magical abilities, leading to tension, conflict, and emotional revelations among the group. As they explore an abandoned mining facility, the episode skillfully balances themes of dependency, self-worth, and the complexities of interpersonal relationships in a deadly yet beautiful world.
Setting the Scene
The episode opens with the group—Silver (Maurice Thomas), Glass (Pao Punieban), Amber (Grizz Sibonek), and Copper (Tabitha Bardal)—traveling through a desolate landscape filled with remnants of former industries. Their journey takes them near an old mining operation, setting the stage for the unfolding events.
Discovery of the Abandoned Mine
At [01:40], Grizz (Amber) spots an eerie factory resembling an old mining operation:
Grizz Sibonek (Amber): "Through the trees, it blends in with the mountains. It's this huge slanted stack of metal boxes punched with little dark windows. There's streaks of rust running down the side, like it's bleeding orange. I wonder if it would suck me in if I got too close." [01:40]
The group debates whether to investigate, ultimately deciding to explore the mine in hopes of finding resources or clues that could aid in their survival.
Amber's Dedication and Tension Within the Group
Amber's determination to fix the car becomes a focal point of tension. At [05:10], Grizz expresses frustration over the group's lack of tools and reliance on magic:
Grizz Sibonek (Amber): "I'm just gonna fix it the normal way, Silver. I don't need your dumb magic." [05:15]
This moment highlights Amber's struggle with her self-worth and the pressure she feels to contribute effectively to the group's survival.
The Descent into the Mine
As the group delves deeper into the mine ([08:10]), the atmosphere grows increasingly ominous. Grizz ventures further alone, driven by her need to fix the car:
Grizz Sibonek (Amber): "There's something inside the machinery. Something that gives off a cold, white light. It could fix the car, I think." [09:10]
Her solo excursion sets off a chain of events that leads to a critical turning point in the episode.
Climax: Amber's Sacrifice
Inside the mine, Amber confronts a mysterious entity emitting a white light. Her determination leads her to reach into the machinery, attempting to harness its power:
Grizz Sibonek (Amber): "I reach my fingers out as far as I can. I feel my fingers wrap around the light." [14:37]
However, the attempt goes awry. Amber emerges injured, revealing that her magic was insufficient to achieve her goal. The group's concern peaks as they discover her predicament:
Pao Punieban (Glass): "Amber, you've gotta tell us what happened." [16:08]
Resolution: Reconciliation and Understanding
The aftermath sees the group grappling with their feelings towards Amber. Initially accusatory, the members soon realize the depth of Amber's desperation and commitment:
Pao Punieban (Glass): "We don't care about you being useful, Amber. We. We care about you." [17:46]
This heartfelt admission helps to mend the fractures within the group, reaffirming their bonds despite the challenges they face.
