Hymns for the Road is a fiction podcast that often takes place inside a moving vehicle. Listener discretion is advised while driving. General content warnings are listed in the show notes.
Copper
What are you putting on this one?
Silver
I'm doing a mountain range kind of thing.
Copper
What's that above them?
Silver
Another horizon in the sky. This is gonna be a road. I haven't finished it yet.
Copper
What does it mean?
Silver
Whatever you want it to mean.
Copper
Well, now I want to write something.
Amber
It's getting dark. Don't keep the lights on back there too much longer, okay?
Copper
All right, Copper. I'll just think of it in my head.
Glass
You guys see that billboard we just passed?
Copper
No. What'd it say?
Glass
It just said bones in big letters with a question mark.
Copper
Bones?
Silver
Bones.
Copper
Oh, I love the funny ones.
Amber
We haven't seen very many of those recently.
Silver
That's because some summer puts most of them up.
Amber
Oh, I. I forgot.
Copper
Are you seeing any turn offs up there?
Amber
Not yet. I'm looking, though.
Glass
We should just keep driving forever. Copper never gets to leave the seat.
Amber
Amber.
Glass
I'm kidding. I'm looking, too. Got any snacks back there?
Copper
Takis.
Glass
What flavor?
Copper
The green one.
Glass
Which green one? Give me that crunchy fajita. Why didn't you get the good ones?
Copper
They were cheap. They only cost one haiku.
Silver
All done with your card?
Copper
Oh, it looks awesome. Silver. Thank you.
Silver
How many is that now?
Copper
10, 11, 12.
Glass
There's another billboard already.
Copper
Does it say where we can get off the road?
Amber
Whoa, look.
Copper
What was that?
Glass
It was something on fire. What do you mean?
Copper
I mean, it was. It was a structure or something.
Amber
I think it was just a shed.
Silver
It's barely spraying. It's too early for things to be burning.
Amber
Does anybody else think the sunset looks weird?
Glass
Can you ask Aster what's going on?
Copper
Not a bad idea. Stop the car.
Amber
Should I pull over? There's no shoulder. We'd still be in the lane.
Glass
There aren't even other cars. We should be able to stop in the middle of the road, right?
Silver
Roads are always alive, Amber. Even if you can't see cars on them.
Copper
Then what do we do?
Silver
We stay calm and we keep going until we find somewhere to turn. Guys, do we have a turn?
Glass
Do you see how bright the stars are?
Amber
I don't want to drive. I really don't want to drive.
Glass
Switch me.
Silver
Not with that broken arm you won't.
Glass
Then what am I supposed to do?
Silver
You're supposed to rest. You're supposed to heal up.
Copper
Just let us take care of you for this one, all right?
Glass
Okay. Okay? Yeah.
Amber
Glass, can you switch with me?
Copper
I can try.
Silver
The night's already started, Copper. We can't stop now.
Glass
Copper, you can do this. You just have to not freak out.
Silver
Darling, hand me those marks.
Glass
We're not gonna pay our way out of a long night.
Silver
So not for paying. I'm gonna try drawing some sigils on the windows. See if it helps.
Glass
Here.
Silver
Thank you, darling. Lass. You gonna try to get a reading done up there?
Copper
I don't think there's gonna be a future to read, Silver. Not until we get to the morning again, anyway. Silver.
Amber
My green bag.
Silver
I got it.
Amber
I think I have enough stuff for a few offensive spells. Just in case.
Silver
Focus on driving. We'll take care of the rest.
Amber
All right.
Copper
We've got plenty of water. But I hope everybody likes steel protein bars and crunchy fajita. Takis.
Glass
I hate you guys.
Silver
If you see somebody, don't look directly at me.
Amber
It. Somebody. It's that. Holy.
Silver
Stay calm, y'all. We've outrun wildfires before. We can do it again.
Amber
We've never had to outrun a wildfire during a long night.
Copper
First time for everything.
Glass
It's far enough away right now. We'll just keep driving.
Amber
I don't think we're gonna make it this time.
Silver
Stay focused, Copper. We'll make it. You can do this. All right.
Amber
Summer. The other said it wasn't always like that. That it used to be nice. It didn't used to be so hot. I don't remember. Somehow we always ended up looking forward to it. But there must be a reason why we always forgot.
Silver
You've got it.
Glass
Yeah, I've got it.
Silver
Glass could help you if you need.
Glass
I'm okay.
Copper
I hope I won't be able to see out that window.
Amber
I couldn't see out of it with all the cracking either.
Glass
No off ramps.
Copper
No.
Amber
We were almost done with winter. But we'd driven into another long night. Nothing is certain during those. Winter can change into summer. Time can bend indefinitely. Space can turn inside out. What if it comes back.
Silver
We only have to worry about right now.
Glass
The sky is going in the wrong direction.
Copper
Don't look at it so hard then.
Amber
When I tried to remember Summer, I always got a vague impression that it was nice. I always remembered it being okay.
Glass
I see something out there, but there's.
Amber
Always the itch in the back of my mind.
Silver
What kind of something?
Amber
That maybe they were just telling me it was streets.
Copper
Lights off ramp.
Glass
Nope.
Silver
Hand me that paint marker. Come on, darling. Focus. I'm disappointed in you.
Glass
No, you're not.
Amber
I'm not disappointed. I'm mad. We still have to deal with you.
Glass
Shut up.
Amber
We're almost at the equinox. We could have used an extra hand.
Copper
You wasted a whole limb trying to get magic. You can't do it.
Glass
I didn't waste anything.
Silver
Except all our time. Maybe right here. Sweetheart, I've got.
Amber
We would have saved plenty of time and resources. Resources? If we had just left you back there.
Copper
It's not like we need you for much anyway.
Glass
You're lying. And I'm ignoring you.
Silver
Mighty immature of you.
Amber
Seriously, Amber. You're just going to shut down when things don't go your way?
Copper
Hey, Amber.
Amber
Hey, Amber.
Copper
You're doing great, Amber.
Silver
You're almost through it, darling. Hold on.
Glass
Of course. Now we have a thousand exits to choose from.
Amber
Glass, have you found all the stuff?
Copper
I can't find any white plastic.
Glass
Can't we use a substitution or something?
Amber
Find something. I cannot see up here.
Silver
You're working on it, darling. Be patient.
Amber
I don't know how to be patient right now.
Copper
I just had an idea.
Amber
Is it to slow down?
Glass
We can't slow down, Copper. The fire is right behind us.
Copper
Sir, can see without eyes.
Silver
Astor can't reach us and he'll turn.
Glass
Holy shit. I can't do this.
Narrator
Silver.
Amber
Sir, I can't do this.
Copper
Can get here if I can channel them.
Glass
How do you even know you can do that?
Copper
I don't. I just have a feeling.
Amber
I don't think we should be depending on a feeling right now.
Glass
What else have we got? What's the worst that could happen?
Silver
What if it changes them faster?
Copper
I'm okay with it.
Silver
You're okay accelerating it?
Copper
Hey, we're a team. I'm not afraid of acting like it.
Glass
Then hurry up with it.
Copper
Tell us what we're hurrying up with.
Amber
Tell me where to go.
Copper
Turn right. You should be able to avoid most of it.
Amber
Now.
Silver
I want to know if you two know how long this is going to last.
Copper
Hard to say. We can't See the end.
Glass
I want to know if we're going to die or not.
Copper
Perhaps parts of us will, but that's.
Amber
Again, are you. Either there's a weird reflection in the windshield, or your eyes are glowing.
Copper
Oh. Huh. I hope it looks good.
Amber
Bright sun and cool water and long days. Fire and drought and storms. I. I could cast something out the window.
Silver
Don't you dare open that window, Copper.
Copper
I'm not looking.
Glass
We need to stop the car. It'll be better if we stop the car.
Amber
Silver. We lost Amber.
Silver
We did not lose Amber. They'll be all right. Don't look back there, y'all.
Amber
I'm just looking at the road.
Copper
I'm straight ahead, too, Silver. Don't worry about me.
Amber
Sometimes I wonder if the summers in this world would be nicer.
Glass
Look out the window.
Amber
If the change happened 30 years ago.
Copper
We're not looking out the window, Amber.
Amber
40 years ago, when summers weren't as hot, when winters weren't as cold. Can't we do anything to help them?
Silver
No, Copper, we can't.
Amber
What about Amber?
Silver
We can't do anything about Amber right now. We'll reach the end soon.
Amber
Are you sure?
Silver
I'm not. But we have one way to go, and that's Ford. So that's where we're going, right, Glass?
Copper
Yep.
Amber
I smelled smoke in the car. It was raining. It should have smothered the fire. But lucky us, we got both the heat and the flood and the little voice saying it can all be like it was. It can go back to.
Glass
Copper.
Amber
I just hit somebody.
Silver
Keep driving, Silver.
Amber
I just hit square somebody.
Silver
They didn't hit a person. Keep driving. They're dead already. Copper, step on him.
Glass
We killed them.
Silver
No, Amber, we didn't kill them. Believe me, y'all, that person left us a long time ago.
Amber
I'm starting to feel like I left a long time ago.
Silver
You'll be all right, darling. Just focus.
Copper
Summer.
Silver
Oh, Glass. You did.
Copper
I looked back.
Amber
Silver. Can anyone hear me? I'm still here. Why did you leave me? I promise I'll find it. I promise I will find it.
Silver
Copper. Copper.
Copper
You with us?
Silver
Squeaker? Hey, Copper. There they are.
Amber
What happened?
Glass
We thought you were going to wreck us.
Silver
For a second, you were still driving, but you were somewhere else.
Copper
The sun's coming up.
Glass
It's morning. Copper.
Silver
It's over. You made it. I told y'all we would.
Copper
That sucked.
Silver
You did great, darlin.
Copper
Oh, I've got to thank Aster for their help.
Glass
Your eyes are still glowing.
Copper
Yeah, I wondered if that was gonna be permanent.
Glass
I want to drive the next one.
Silver
How are you feeling, Amber?
Glass
I was touch and go for a sec, but I think I'm all right now.
Silver
Copper. Copper.
Amber
I want to switch.
Copper
Yeah, of course. I got it.
Glass
Are they okay?
Silver
They'll be all right. They just need rest. Like last time.
Glass
This one wasn't like last time.
Copper
I thought we did much better than usual.
Silver
Might be different for them. Give them time. They'll come around when they're ready.
Amber
Yeah, I'll get there. I just need more time.

Podcast Summary: Hymns for the Road
Episode: The Long Night
Release Date: March 1, 2025
Host/Author: Hodgepodge Audio
Hymns for the Road is a captivating fiction podcast that transports listeners into a dystopian fantasy version of America, following four survivors navigating a perilous wasteland. In Episode 27: The Long Night, the crew confronts one of their most daunting challenges yet as they face an unending night filled with supernatural threats and internal tensions.
The episode opens with the survivors—Copper, Silver, Amber, and Glass—embarking on a treacherous journey through a land transformed by a magical apocalypse. The landscape is described as both "indescribably beautiful, and ruthlessly, indiscriminately deadly," setting the tone for the perilous adventures that unfold.
As night falls, the group grapples with eerie phenomena and escalating dangers. The absence of visible cars and the realization that "roads are always alive" (Silver, [03:07]) heightens the sense of unease. The introduction of ominous billboards, like one that ominously displays "BONES" with a question mark ([00:30], Glass), underscores the constant threats lurking in their path.
Notable Quote:
"Roads are always alive, Amber. Even if you can't see cars on them."
— Silver ([03:07])
The strain of the journey exacerbates existing tensions among the survivors. Amber expresses frustration and exhaustion, questioning past decisions and the group's ability to survive the night:
Notable Quote:
"I don't want to drive. I really don't want to drive."
— Amber ([02:26])
Glass battles with pain from a broken arm, seeking relief and empathy from the group, while Copper attempts to maintain morale by focusing on provisions like "Takis" and "steel protein bars" ([02:05], [04:29]).
As the night deepens, supernatural elements intensify. Silver takes proactive steps by drawing sigils on the windows, hoping to ward off unseen threats ([03:57], [03:56]). The group's reliance on magical abilities is further highlighted when Copper considers channeling unknown powers to navigate the crisis:
Notable Quote:
"I just have a feeling."
— Copper ([08:19])
Despite skepticism from Amber and Glass, Copper decides to trust their instincts, leading to a risky maneuver that ultimately helps the group survive the night.
The climax of the episode occurs when Amber accidentally crashes into an entity on the road, triggering a moment of panic and uncertainty about their survival:
Notable Quote:
"We killed them."
— Glass ([11:07])
In a tense exchange, Silver reassures the group, emphasizing that the entity had already left them, allowing them to continue their journey. As dawn breaks, the survivors realize they have overcome the immediate threat of the long night:
Notable Quote:
"It's over. You made it. I told y'all we would."
— Silver ([13:16])
Throughout the episode, characters reveal deeper layers of their personalities and relationships. Amber grapples with feelings of abandonment and desperation, while Copper shows growth by taking responsibility and expressing gratitude towards the mystical entity, Aster.
Notable Quote:
"I want to switch."
— Amber ([14:03])
The group's ability to support each other despite internal conflicts underscores the theme of camaraderie in the face of adversity.
The Long Night serves as a pivotal episode in Hymns for the Road, showcasing the survivors' resilience and the ever-present supernatural dangers of their world. The combination of intense character interactions, magical realism, and the relentless journey through a transformed America keeps listeners engaged and invested in the fate of Copper, Silver, Amber, and Glass.
