Courtney Frerichs returns to the podcast for a conversation that goes far beyond racing. Courtney opens up about the difficult road back from major ankle and ACL surgeries, missing the 2024 Olympic Trials, and what it’s looked like to rebuild both physically and mentally over the past two years. She shares how stepping into a completely new chapter of her career has changed the way she approaches training, racing, and confidence. We also go all the way back to Courtney’s early days growing up in Missouri, playing multiple sports, doing gymnastics at a high level, and discovering running later than most elite athletes. She reflects on the impact her college coach had on her life and career, what made their relationship so special, and how those lessons still shape her today. Courtney also talks about moving to Park City, joining Ed Eyestone’s group, racing with freedom again, and the mindset shift that helped her run her fastest 5K in over two years at the USATF 5K Championships. Topics Discussed: Returning to racing after ACL and ankle surgeries Rebuilding confidence after injury Letting go of comparisons to past versions of herself Missing the 2024 Olympic Trials Joining Ed Eyestone’s training group in Park City Learning to race freely again Her silver medal race in Tokyo Growing up playing multiple sports The impact of Coach Butler on her career Finding longevity and joy in the sport again Support our sponsors: Huug makes high-quality bras and underwear designed to actually fit and support your body through every phase of life. Andrew Colley joins me on the podcast after winning the USATF 25K Championships in Grand Rapids, Michigan, just six weeks after he and his wife Tristin welcomed their daughter Lily June into the world. We talk about balancing newborn life with training, racing at a high level while sleep deprived, and the excitement of finally seeing years of consistent work continue to pay off. Andrew is a 2:09 marathoner, a three-time Team USA World Cross Country representative, and a longtime member of the ZAP Endurance team under coach Pete Rea. We talk about his recent marathon PR in Seville, why he feels there’s still a much bigger breakthrough coming, and what’s changed in his approach to the marathon over the years. We also get into life after sponsorship changes, staying patient through the ups and downs of professional running, and what motivates him as both an athlete and now a new dad. Plus, because Tristin and Lily June came over too, this episode includes some laughs, baby snuggles, and a very real in-person conversation that felt more like hanging out than recording a podcast. Topics Discussed: Adjusting to life as new parents with baby Lily June Winning the 2026 USATF 25K Championships Racing Seville Marathon and feeling capable of a breakthrough Training consistency after years of injuries and setbacks Underfueling, body image struggles, and disordered eating in men’s running Mental health, vulnerability, and pressures within professional running Training with NC State athletes and life in Raleigh Sponsorship uncertainty after ZAP Endurance and navigating the business side of pro running Olympic Trials goals and believing in yourself at the highest level Sobriety, addictive personality traits, and lessons from past mistakes The infamous cheesecake story at Club Cross Country Nationals Favorite recovery routines, TV shows, and fantasy books Advice for young runners about confidence and self-belief Books, TV Shows, & Media Mentioned: Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan Red Rising by Pierce Brown Brooklyn Nine-Nine Holiday Inn Support our sponsors: Lagoon Sleep — If you’re ready to upgrade your sleep, Lagoon pillows are truly a game changer. Sara Hall joins the podcast to talk about her new book For the Love of the Grind, which quickly became a New York Times bestseller. Sara has been one of the most consistent and compelling figures in American distance running, with a 2:20 marathon personal best, a fifth-place finish at the 2024 Olympic Trials, and a career defined by longevity, resilience, and a deep love for the process. In this conversation, Sara reflects on her career arc, from being the first professional athlete to say yes to this podcast back in 2016 to becoming a veteran of the sport who continues to push her limits. She shares what it has looked like to race at a high level while raising four daughters, staying grounded in her values, and following what feels most authentic to her, even when it doesn’t follow a traditional path. The conversation also dives into the themes of her book, including faith, identity, motherhood, and the emotional highs and lows of a decades-long career. Sara opens up about how her beliefs have evolved over time, how she’s navigated criticism, and why she chose to tell her story in her own voice. This episode is a deeper look at what it means to commit to the long game, both in running and in life, and how growth often comes through the hardest seasons. I’m coming to you with a bonus episode recorded live in Indianapolis during an incredible weekend at the 500 Festival Indy Mini Marathon and the USATF 5K Championships. I had the opportunity to announce the 5K and witness a high-stakes race where the top two finishers were competing for a spot on the world championship team, which made the energy in the city so special. The day before the race, I hosted a live podcast at the beautiful Bottleworks Hotel alongside my friend Ally Brettnacher from Finish Lines and Milestones. These Indy weekends have become such a fun tradition for us, bringing the running community together in a meaningful way. We were joined by an amazing panel: Emma Grace Hurley, Drew Hunter, and Courtney Frerichs. Emma Grace is in the middle of a breakout season, recently breaking an American record and continuing to stack impressive performances. Drew just won the USATF 5K Championship race that weekend and shared insights from his journey as both a professional athlete and a dad. Courtney, an Olympic and world silver medalist, opened up about her return to racing after navigating major injuries and surgeries over the past couple of years. And in true live-event fashion, we had a surprise moment when Jenny Simpson jumped on the mic for a quick cameo, which made the night even more special. This event came together with the help of some incredible local partners, and the atmosphere was just so much fun. We had great food, a shoe decorating station, and a packed room of people who love this sport. Quick note on the audio: since this was recorded live with wireless mics, it may not be as crisp as a typical episode, but the conversation and energy more than make up for it. If you enjoy this episode, I’d love for you to leave a rating and review, and if you’re ever in Indy for these race weekends in May or November, come join us live.
Rachel Smith returns to the podcast fresh off a standout performance at the B.A.A. 5K, where she finished second overall and was the first American woman across the line. A 2020 Olympian in the 5,000m, Rachel is now navigating a new season of life as both a professional runner and a mom of two young daughters. In this conversation, Rachel shares how her relationship with running has evolved, what it looks like to balance elite training with motherhood, and why she’s been drawn toward road racing in this chapter of her career. She reflects on shifting priorities, redefining success, and what’s next as she considers stepping up to the marathon distance. Rachel also opens up about the realities of training in a different season of life, the importance of community in Flagstaff, and how she’s approaching racing with a fresh perspective. It’s a thoughtful, honest look at growth, identity, and staying connected to the sport in a way that feels meaningful. What we talked about: Returning to racing and B.A.A. 5K performance Growing up around the Boston Marathon and its significance Learning how to race on the roads vs. track racing Transitioning from track to road racing Becoming a mother and shifting life priorities Training and competing while raising two young kids Redefining success and not comparing to past versions of herself Considering a marathon debut and learning fueling strategies Life in Flagstaff and the professional running community Family, relationships, and what matters most beyond running Interest in trail running and ultramarathons Perspective on long-term career fulfillment and curiosity in sport Media Mentioned: For the Love of the Grind by Sara Hall Support our sponsors: Huug makes high-quality bras and underwear designed to actually fit and support your body through every phase of life. Carrie Elwood’s performance at the Boston Marathon turned heads across the running world. In just her sixth marathon, she placed 10th overall and finished as the fourth American, running a massive personal best of 2:22 after entering the race with a 2:31 PR. Carrie is far from an overnight success. A former standout at the University of Colorado Boulder, her career has included years of injuries, time away from the sport, and a slow, intentional rebuild back to elite competition. After stepping away from running post-college to heal physically and mentally, she gradually returned, focusing on consistency, health, and rediscovering her love for the sport. That long-term approach has paid off. Now an American record holder in the 25K and the 2025 US Cross Country Champion, Carrie has steadily built toward this breakthrough moment. In this conversation, Carrie shares what finally clicked in Boston. From a new coaching setup with Andrew Castor and the Mammoth Track Club, to dialing in race-day fueling and learning to trust herself at the front of the race, this episode captures the full story behind a defining performance. She reflects on racing without fear, the years of setbacks that shaped her, and what it feels like to finally have the race she knew was possible. What we talked about: Carrie’s breakthrough performance at the Boston Marathon Decision to race Boston without guarantees or support Racing mindset and staying present without checking pace Training changes under Andrew Castor Fixing marathon struggles through nutrition Leaving teaching to pursue running full-time Injury history and stepping away from the sport post-college Rebuilding slowly and sustainably over several years Confidence, self-belief, and racing at the front Breakdown of the Boston race and key moments on the course Media Mentioned: Books: The Hummingbird by Sandro Veronesi The Overstory by Richard Powers Bewilderment by Richard Powers TV Show: Love on the Spectrum Sponsors: Cure HydrationCure Hydration makes it easier to stay properly hydrated with clean ingredients and electrolyte support that actually helps your body absorb water more effectively. Today on the podcast, I’m talking with Nathan Martin, fresh off his incredible win at the Los Angeles Marathon. This was one of the most exciting finishes we’ve seen in a long time, coming down to a dramatic lean at the line after 26.2 miles. It’s a moment you truly have to see to believe. Nathan’s win brought a huge wave of media attention, including an appearance on the The Jennifer Hudson Show, which was so fun to watch. Beyond this breakthrough moment, Nathan has been building an impressive career for years. He holds a 2:10:45 marathon personal best and is the fastest American-born Black man in the marathon. He placed seventh at the 2024 Olympic Trials Marathon and has also finished in the top 10 at the New York City Marathon. Nathan runs professionally for ASICS and is coached by James McCurdy. Outside of racing, he’s a high school track and cross country coach and works as a substitute teacher, all while continuing to chase big goals in the marathon. I’m really grateful he took the time to come on the show, especially with how busy things have been for him lately. This is a fun and inspiring conversation with an athlete who is just getting started on what feels like a really exciting chapter. What we discussed: Adjusting to sudden media attention after LA Marathon win Becoming the fastest American-born Black marathoner and what that means Authenticity vs. performance on social media Breaking down the LA Marathon finish and final sprint Experience with major media appearances and interviews 2024 Olympic Trials marathon and racing through extreme fatigue Mental strategies during tough marathon moments Upbringing, family influence, and developing competitiveness Coaching high school athletes and impact on young runners Looking ahead to future goals, including the Olympics Media Mentioned: The Jennifer Hudson Show CNN Fox & Friends CBS segments (social/digital features) Big Brother The Traitors Ender’s Game Thank you to our sponsors: ZBiotics is a pre-alcohol probiotic drink, engineered by PhD microbiologists, designed to help your body break down the byproduct of alcohol that can lead to rough mornings after drinking. Today on the podcast, I am talking with Jonathan Western, and this is a really special conversation leading into Boston Marathon weekend. Jonathan is a 2:46 marathoner who has truly built his running journey over time. He ran his first half marathon in 2012 and his first marathon in 2014, and then really found consistency around 2017 to 2018. Since then, he has fully embraced the sport. This will be his eighth consecutive Boston Marathon, and this year he is taking it to another level by running the Double Boston. He has completed 16 marathons and 21 ultras, and he is someone who clearly loves to challenge himself in big ways. We talk about his life as a runner, raising an active family alongside his wife Christine, who is also running Boston this year, and how running has become such a constant in his life. Jonathan also shares about a personal hardship he has walked through and how running has always been there for him through it. That thread really carries through this entire conversation and gives a deeper look into why he shows up the way he does. I love talking to everyday runners, and while Jonathan may not call himself elite, celebrating your 40th birthday with a 100-mile run definitely says otherwise. He brings so much perspective, resilience, and passion to the running community, and I’m really excited for you to hear his story. What we discussed: Double Boston challenge (running the course twice) Boston Marathon approach vs running for time vs experience Marathon PR (2:46) and race breakdown at Boston First marathon experience and early running journey Running with his wife and family life balance Jigger Johnson 100 attempt and embracing difficult races Road vs trail running and seasonal training approach Loss of his son Cooper and running through grief Mount to Coast partnership and Double Boston support setup Mindset: pursuing hard things and reframing failure Media mentioned Severance Foo Fighters Thank you to our sponsors: Mount to Coast is a performance footwear brand focused on supporting runners who push beyond traditional race formats, especially in the ultrarunning space.
