Foreign. Hello and welcome back to I'll read what she's reading. I'm Kennedy. I'm Mikayla.
Reggie
And I'm Reggie.
Kennedy
And today we are going to be sharing with you guys our four star reads because, you know, we talk a lot about the books we don't really like and we talk about our five star reads a lot. But the middle gets lost sometimes.
Reggie
Yeah.
Kennedy
And you know, there's still great books. They're still great books. And honestly, I rate a lot more books 3 and 4 stars than I do 5 stars, I think on, I think. Does Goodreads give you an average of what you rate books? I know Fable does. Yeah. I think my average rating on Fable is 3.7. Yeah. Which is fine. Yeah. So we're giving you all the four stars four star book recommendations today. But before we do that, we are going to do our favorite segment that still doesn't have a name.
Reggie
No, I thought we did give it a name.
Kennedy
Oh, did we give it a name? What was it?
Reggie
I'll read what she's reading.
Kennedy
Where we pick books for each other to read. So I don't remember what episode we did this last on, but it's been a while. It's been probably like two months, I would say.
Reggie
Oh, I think it's been longer.
Kennedy
And we recap the books that we chose for each other and then give each other new recommendations.
Reggie
Spoiler free.
Kennedy
Spoiler free. So, Mikaela, you're gonna go off first. You're gonna go first. Tell us about the book that I picked for you. Legend Born. Yes, I did. Yes, it was, it was good. I love how it was very unique and the magic system was just like, really fun. I think I rated it 3.5 stars maybe. The only thing that I couldn't. I was having a hard time with is just like the main character being 16. And I think what threw me off is like, she goes to college, but she's 16 years old. Is it because she's really smart? Yeah, she's like in an advanced program. And I'm like, I don't know, it was just hard to. I couldn't get past that for some reason. And I know some people really like it. I have continued on to read the second book and I feel like some things kind of got lost in the sauce. Like, it was just hard. It was hard to keep up with the. What is the, like the political powers of everyone. And like, it was just. It kind of got confusing and I just really had a hard time focusing until like the last little bit I feel like she always ends her books on a bang, which is really fun, really nice, like, easy to want to read the next book. But I'm trying to, like, build up the courage to read the third one because. Not that I don't think it will be good, it's just the beginning portion of the second book was a little rough for me to read. So hearing you say that does not make me motivated to read the second one. I think I just wish that there would have been some sort of dark diagram explaining. Yeah. The hierarchy, not, like, family tree, but, you know, that, like, stone thing. Yeah. You know what I'm talking about. Yeah. No, there's just. It's. It's a lot to keep track of, which is for a ya. That's what I was gonna say series, I think. Yeah. But I love how unique and different it is, which makes it really fun. So, yeah, if you want something unique, seriously, that series is. I've never read a Magic System like that. Yeah. Okay, Reggie, me, I'm feeling so bad. Don't feel bad.
Reggie
No, like, I truly feel so bad. Okay. So Michaela picked for me to read Once Upon a Broken Heart, and I have read, like, maybe 30% of it, but I started it right before there was, like, Fearless was coming out, Conditions of Will, and I think I just kind of started at a bad time. So I was, like, listening to it, but then I was like, okay, I have these other books that I need to read for, like, book club, like, podcast purposes. But also, I've been looking forward to these releases, and so I was having a hard time getting invested into Once Upon a Broken Heart, so I've been meaning to come back to it. I just haven't had as much of a desire, and it's really not.
Kennedy
I don't know.
Reggie
I think I. I don't want to, like, give up on it because I've only read 30% of it, but I do feel like, because it's been so long, I feel like I'm gonna need to start it over.
Kennedy
Yeah.
Reggie
So that's why I think it's just a me problem. Yeah. So I. I wish I could, like, report and tell you what I thought about the book, but I haven't technically finished it.
Kennedy
That's okay.
Reggie
It's okay, Mikayla.
Kennedy
And if you don't ever want to read it, that's totally okay.
Reggie
Well, I've always wanted to, and I think because I didn't have, like, the best reading experience, I didn't love Caraval. I don't know if I'm like. I'm not really. I don't know if I'm like, overhyping Once Upon a Broken Heart in my mind, but I know a lot of people like it a lot more than Caraval. I don't know. I thought that it's definitely an interesting concept, and I want to know why everyone talks about it. So I will. I will get to it. I have it on my hoopla, so it's like, it's always there for me to listen to. I don't have the physical book, but I could. My problem is, you guys, I have not. I've hardly sat down to read a physical book. I am just on the audiobook train. Like, I was not going to listen to the Bound Worlds, and I ended up buying the audiobook on the Audible sale the other day because I was like, I am not going to be able to get to the next book I need to physically read if I don't listen to this one. And so I think it's just been hard because I've had so many audiobooks anyways. I'm making excuses for myself.
Kennedy
No.
Reggie
But I apologize because I feel really bad about it. I haven't forgotten about it. I just think I haven't had, like, a. I don't know.
Kennedy
Nobody's perfect. It's fine. It's okay. It's fine.
Reggie
I feel bad because I want. I want to read it and I want to enjoy it, so I just need to pick it up at the right time.
Kennedy
The thing that's hard about the once broke, Once Once Upon a Broken Heart trilogy is that I think the second book is the best book, which is weird because usually the second book is the worst, but the second book is.
Reggie
The strongest.
Kennedy
You know? And I also think that that would make a good TV show. It would be so good. Caraval and Once Upon a Broken Heart. Yeah, it would give. What's that one show that's based on all of the fairy tales.
Reggie
Once Upon a Time.
Kennedy
Yeah, you'd kind of be like, that kind of vibe. But if you don't ever get to it, it's okay.
Reggie
No, I want. I want to get to. I want to finish the assignment. Not that I want to treat it like an assignment, but, like, if someone tells me to read, like, I want to commit to the. To the. The project that we. Yeah. So I feel quite terrible.
Kennedy
Don't feel bad. But, yeah.
Reggie
So I will probably be starting that over within the next month, but now.
Kennedy
There'S no pressure on you. You can do it when you want. To do it. You can do it. Yeah.
Reggie
Yeah. I feel like it's just been really hard because I've had to be, like, really intentional read because a lot of it is. I'm listening to audiobooks, and so I really didn't want to listen to that one. I wanted to, like, physically read it. But I say that about every book that I start for physical, and then I end up finishing as an audiobook.
Kennedy
It's okay.
Reggie
Rip my bank account.
Kennedy
It's okay.
Reggie
I have to get it all in all the formats.
Kennedy
You gotta do what you gotta do.
Reggie
So anyways.
Kennedy
Yeah. Yeah.
Reggie
Sorry.
Kennedy
It's okay.
Reggie
I feel really sad about it, actually.
Kennedy
Totally fine.
Reggie
Kennedy, your turn. I wish I would have picked a different book for you. And I told. I really wish I would have picked Alone with youh in the Ether.
Kennedy
Oh, well, I will read it.
Reggie
I had forgotten about it. And then I remember after we record the episode, we were draw. I was driving home and I was like, why did I not pick that book for her? But I do think that's a book I need to reread because I read it really early on in my reading journey and I think I would appreciate it and find it a lot more enjoyable because I personally just didn't vibe with it. I felt like it was the most flowery writing. I didn't even understand what was happening. But now that I'm a more seasoned reader, I think I would probably really like it. But I know you've read a lot of. I have. That's only ol.
Kennedy
I've only read. I've read two of Oliv. Olivy Blake's book books. And I remember the first overhyped episode we did. You talked about Alone with you in the Ether. And after that, I thought to myself, I'm not ever reading that book. I didn't put two and two together. And I didn't know Olivey Blake was the writer.
Reggie
Yeah.
Kennedy
So when I picked up my first Olivey Blake book and read it and loved it, I didn't realize that she was the author of Alone either.
Reggie
Yeah.
Kennedy
So I will read that eventually. But the book that Reggie did pick for me is the Summer Will Be different by Carly Fortune. Right.
Reggie
Yeah.
Kennedy
Okay, guys. She picked this book for me and I had listened to it within, like three days because I had access to all. It was available instantly to me on the Libby app. I rated it 3 1/2 stars, but I don't remember a single thing, like, empty. It's. I'm looking at my Goodreads review and I said, the vibes for this were immaculate. Such a fun summary read. And then I said, probably would have liked this even more if I read it and not listened to it.
Reggie
That's why I wish I would have picked a more, like, dense book for you, because I know romance books tend to.
Kennedy
Yeah. It's best for him's brother. Right?
Reggie
Yeah. On the island.
Kennedy
And it's dual. Dual timeline. Yes. Yes. Okay. It's coming back to me.
Reggie
She's like a wedding. They shuck the clams and she's a wedding. A florist for wedding.
Kennedy
It's coming back. Okay. Yeah. Three and a half stars.
Reggie
So obviously it was super memorable.
Kennedy
You know, I mean, I rated it three and a half stars, so I liked it.
Reggie
Yeah.
Kennedy
I would honestly probably reread it because. Empty. I remember things. I do remember really liking the main guy. He has.
Reggie
He always has a paper back in his back pocket.
Kennedy
Yeah. I remember liking him. Other than I can't remember their names. I am so sorry. My reading retention is.
Reggie
It was a while ago. That's why I was like, maybe we need to do the segment even though I haven't finish the freaking book.
Kennedy
That's okay.
Reggie
Because it has been a while. So I don't blame you at all. But I'm glad that, you know, you enjoyed it when that, you know. Yeah.
Kennedy
Past Kennedy. Really enjoyed it. Kennedy right here.
Reggie
I don't know why I remember so much from that book because it's been a while since I even read it. There was something about it that just was like, yeah.
Kennedy
Well, you guys, I'm reading the newest Carly Fortune book, One Golden Summer. One Golden Summer. I'm physically reading it. I've decided because I bought it, I'll.
Reggie
Be talking about that one in this episode.
Kennedy
Let's go. So, okay, let's go over who. What books we're picking for each other now. Let's go down the same order. Okay. I'm going first. I'm picking for you. You are? Okay, I. Drum roll, please. I'm picking when in Rome by Sarah. Okay. Yay. Super simple love. Really easy. I think you potentially will like it. Okay, so I'm excited. Yeah. Small town. I love a small town. And then I can go on in the. Into the little series. Yeah. Okay. Yeah, it's cute. I'm excited. Not anything like spectacular. That's okay. Super memorable, but just, like, a fun, easy read for the summer. Appreciate that. Yeah. You're next.
Reggie
Oh, I'm really struggling because I want to give Michaela, like, something, like, a little more Light, fun. Cause I know she's a busy gal, but I want to be really selfish.
Kennedy
Be selfish.
Reggie
I want to be selfish. And I really want you to read the play.
Kennedy
I was going to say.
Reggie
I knew it.
Kennedy
I knew it. I'm dying.
Reggie
I'm like. Because I'm on the last book. I'm on the last book, and it's just, like, killing me that I'm, like, sitting here having this experience reading this book. And I am like, I literally don't know a single person on the planet who has read these books. And so I think it'd be interesting. I have the physical book if you want to borrow it.
Kennedy
Let's see how long of the way I have on Goodreads. Only 16 more weeks, but it. No worries. That long. I wonder if it's just because they don't have a lot of copies. Yeah, they don't.
Reggie
You can probably get.
Kennedy
You know, I'll just buy it.
Reggie
Well, I have a physical book. You can borrow it.
Kennedy
Just buy it. It's not a big deal.
Reggie
Put it on the podcast card. I felt guilty making you, but. But take your time. I just think that, you know, there's a lot. I mean, selfishly, I want you to read it because I need someone to talk to about it, but I also think I'm not gonna. I don't want to say you're gonna absolutely love this book because you might just like it. You might just be like, that was fine. But I just feel like it's very different from a lot of. I know, like, what I've read, at least. Okay. And I don't know, I just think that there's some concepts in it you might find interesting.
Kennedy
Okay, well, I'm adding it, so. Well, it was on my list, but I'm going to move it up on my list when you get access to it on the Libby app. Yeah.
Reggie
In 16 weeks.
Kennedy
Just kidding. It probably will be sooner because, you know, I feel like it's.
Reggie
I really don't mind you borrowing my book at all. Truly. Truly.
Kennedy
Was that on audible sale?
Reggie
The fur. It was like, barely discounted. But it's the audible cells over now, isn't it? Yeah, I do have. I think I have the. This is my problem is I own the physical.
Kennedy
Regular price, $35.
Reggie
Yes. The audiobook is pretty good.
Kennedy
Seriously?
Reggie
Yeah, I do. I listen to it with my Amazon membership credit.
Kennedy
I could also lose it on Spotify. Is it on Spotify?
Reggie
Yeah.
Kennedy
Yeah.
Reggie
The audio nit book narrator is really good.
Kennedy
Oh, yeah. Okay.
Reggie
I don't know I'm just very curious. I think out of the two of you, I'd be more curious to know what Michaela would think about it.
Kennedy
Okay. I don't know.
Reggie
I don't really know why that is.
Kennedy
Just don't read it like she didn't read yours. Just kidding.
Reggie
I feel that. But I mean here's the thing. It is only three books.
Kennedy
True.
Reggie
That's nice. So.
Kennedy
And they're not super long. I mean the first one's a 17 hours.
Reggie
And I also feel like you'll be able to remember, like if you want to space it out. I feel like.
Kennedy
Yeah, you should.
Reggie
You'd probably remember.
Kennedy
Okay.
Reggie
I also think.
Kennedy
Yeah. Okay.
Reggie
I feel nervous. I'm like so nervous about it.
Kennedy
It'll be great. I'm excited. So thank you for my assignment. Uh huh. Okay. Reggie, Mikayla's the only nice one in the friend group because I'm not giving you light some life.
Reggie
That's fine.
Kennedy
I have. Okay. And I'm not gonna say too much about it because it is one of the books that I'm going to talk about and our four star reads part. But I'm gonna recommend to you the Sword of Kaigen by ML Wang. Oh. 1. Because it's a standalone fantasy 2 Kindle Unlimited.
Reggie
Perfect.
Kennedy
So sign me up. You get it on your Kindle. It's free. I guess we can go right into our four star reading.
Reggie
Let's do.
Kennedy
I can just talk about that.
Reggie
Great segue.
Kennedy
So my. The first book I'm going to talk about is sort of Kai, sort of Kaigen by ML Wang. Obviously I did rate this book four and a half stars. I think I'm feeling good about that. I don't think I want to rate it 5 stars.
Reggie
Okay.
Kennedy
The reason why I'm going to recommend it to you is you find this out very quickly. So this is not a spoiler. You know all of our female main characters in fantasy books, they're these young girls finding their way through life. Whatever. Our female main character, main character in this book is a moment.
Reggie
Okay.
Kennedy
Yeah. Super. Like bad a mom. Okay.
Reggie
Yeah, say less.
Kennedy
It was. I've never read a female main character like her and I don't know if I ever will. Okay.
Reggie
I'm sold. I'm sold. You don't even have to say anything more about it. I'm sold. So please stay more though.
Kennedy
Just. Just be prepared. The only thing I think part of the reason why I'm not giving it four and a half stars and I say this as I recommend her to Read it. But this is just setting expectations. There are parts that are really slow and the world is so confusing.
Reggie
I remember you saying that.
Kennedy
Yeah, it's really confusing. So at the beginning of your Kindle, it'll have a link to her glossary. Highly recommend pulling it up on your phone. Eventually you'll get a handle of it.
Reggie
But I know exactly when I'm gonna read it.
Kennedy
Good, good.
Reggie
It's gonna be when I'm on an airplane.
Kennedy
Okay. There you go. So, yeah, there's that also go into it. It's very similar to the Poppy war.
Reggie
Okay.
Kennedy
It's dark and grim, just like the Poppy warriors. So just be prepared for that.
Reggie
Okay. I'm sold.
Kennedy
Amazing. I recommended it because she's a mom.
Reggie
Yeah, that sounds. That sounds so cool to me. Like, give me more.
Kennedy
She's really cool.
Reggie
Yeah, she's really cool. Moms are cool.
Kennedy
All right.
Reggie
Love.
Kennedy
Oh, my gosh. Literally, you guys. Wait, did we all recommend books for each other? Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Sorry, I thought I was just jumping into the four star reads and I jump the gun.
Reggie
No, that was great.
Kennedy
So perfect segue, that is. Yeah, that's my first four star reads.
Reggie
So these are like recent four star reads for us, Correct? Yeah. I will go next. Let's see. Should I go from my. Like, we'll just go down the line. I don't want to like harp on Throne of Glass too much, but here's what I find interesting. Okay. So I recently read Queen of Shadows and Air Fire. I gave both of those books, like, three stars the first time I read them. They're an easy four, four and a half stars. I bet even if I read it a third time, it would be a five star.
Kennedy
What changed your mind? Like, what changed your mind without giving spoilers?
Reggie
Yeah. Um, well, we. I really feel like my entire personality trait is that the first time I read Throne of Glass, I just had a bad reading experience with it. So therefore, I had a bad attitude about it, and so I didn't rate it as highly. I also, you know, I feel like I just talk about it all the time as, like, my. Like, I don't know. Anyways, so I feel like that's why I rated them a little lower. And I also felt like it was like I had just finished Acotar. This was my second fantasy series I ever read. I was so new to reading stuff like this that I didn't. I was trying to. I don't know why I was trying to compare it to Acotar. It was so stupid of me. I was just a baby. I didn't know what I was doing. But the reason I rated it higher is because one, I think I've appreciate. I can appreciate Throne of Glass way, way more. Also, I feel like for some reason when I read Throne of Glass the first time, I think I forgot a lot about stuff that happened in Assassin's Blade. I don't know why. I mean, I read Assassin's Blade. I think it's maybe because I read it first and I was kind of like, this is just a bunch of novella. I was glad I read it first, but it felt like, you know, these little novellas, I was just kind of like, what is going on here? I just think my brain. I kind of just blocked out a lot of important elements within that book. And so now, especially having read the series once already, I'm picking up on a lot of things that I'm like, this is so brilliant, so genius. Why did I not pick up on this the first time? The female main character drove me crazy when I read it the first time. There were things about her I didn't like. And I'm like, well, why did I not put two and two together at that? Like, obviously she's the way she is because of the way she is. I'm just dumb. So, yeah, if I could go back in time, like literally. You guys, my review for Queen of Shadows, I literally went and deleted my original review because I. I literally re rated it and I said my previous review was a disgrace, so it's no longer with us. These characters are everything to me. My love has grown infinity stars. I had to go delete it because I was just like. I don't know. I just felt like I was being too. I wasn't trying to be mean. I. I was very. I can. I feel very valid in my feelings from when I read it the first time. But, like, I was. It was a disgrace, so I like, deleted it. So I can see why people struggle with Throne of Glass, but I can see why people are absolutely obsessed with it. And I just happen to have experienced both.
Kennedy
Mikayla's over here giggling. She's like, redemption. No, it's insane.
Reggie
Yeah. So I'm also.
Kennedy
However you want to feel about it. Yeah. Yeah.
Reggie
I just think it's also just like, been a testament to me that, like, it really. Reading really can play, like, the time and place you read a book can literally change everything for you. Like the circumstances, like the time of life that you're in. I think right now it's just been. I Didn't think it was gonna be the perfect time for me to read it, but again, but it's been great. And so anyways, that's a long winded way of me just saying that Throne of Glass is the Elite fantasy series. I'm done. When I did not think that before.
Kennedy
Formally apologizing on behalf of me and maybe Mikayla as well, because we were the problem the first time you read it.
Reggie
But the thing is, is, like, you guys really weren't. I was the problem. I just think I was not. I was so new to the, like, reading with friends. And I think about how quickly I read Acotar and then I immediately jumped into Throne of Glass. That I think it was just like my body, my brain, everything I was doing, I was working, I was momming. I was just like, this is so much. And I think I was just exhausted.
Kennedy
Yeah.
Reggie
And I should have just like now if something like that was happening, I'd be like, I'm taking a step back. I'll come back to this later. I know my limits. I didn't know that at the time.
Kennedy
Yeah.
Reggie
I had major fomo.
Kennedy
That's okay.
Reggie
I'm done talking now.
Kennedy
I'll just have FOMO while she reads the blind stars. Okay, your turn. Knowing you probably started before me. Probably. Okay. These are kind of just like my most recent ones, so. Rebel Witch.
Reggie
I was gonna talk about that one too.
Kennedy
Piggyback. Piggyback. Off of each other.
Reggie
Yeah, you go.
Kennedy
It was just a really, really. It was fun. I. There were some aspects that I like, really enjoyed about it. And I don't know, it was just good. I. I can't decide if I actually like the first one better. What did you read?
Reggie
Really liked Heartless Hunter.
Kennedy
I did. Really? I think I rated it five stars. Okay. I don't know. I think the first one's just more witchy, in my opinion, and I just liked that aspect. Don't get me wrong. There's still witchy stuff in the second one, but I don't know. It was really good, though. It was good.
Reggie
Yeah.
Kennedy
I think I like the first one better, though.
Reggie
Yeah. It's funny because the first time when I read Heartless Hunter, I remember, like, I look, I look back at it and I'm like, I should have rated that book higher than I did because there was so much I loved about it. But I think I was, like, focused on the things I didn't love about it that I let myself read it. Does that make sense?
Kennedy
Yeah.
Reggie
Because when I look at it, I'M like, oh, no. I liked Rebel Witch better. And I was thinking that the entire entire time I was reading it, but now that I've taken a step back, I'm like, maybe I did like Heartless Hunter better. But I think, Kennedy, you didn't love Heartless Hunter. I think you would like Rebel Witch. More.
Kennedy
More.
Reggie
It's just fun.
Kennedy
We'll see. It was just. It's just like, you know, just, you know what you're getting.
Reggie
Yeah. I was giggling, kicking my feet within the first chapter. I was like, this is good.
Kennedy
Great. So it was. Yeah, it's just really fun. It is not like anything super complex, but it's still like a fantasy book.
Reggie
Yeah.
Kennedy
But I also feel like it's original and you know, in that aspect, like, it's a different kind of fantasy book, but there's some elements that are similar.
Reggie
Yeah.
Kennedy
As other books, but like, it's just a different concept. So. Yeah. I mean, the girl uses period blood, so. Yeah. That's unique. She hasn't anymore. Yeah.
Reggie
So if you haven't. Rebel Witch is the second book. There's only two books.
Kennedy
That's right. That's right.
Reggie
Heartless Hunter is the first.
Kennedy
Yeah. Harvest Hunter is the first.
Reggie
So Kristen Cicero and it's really nice.
Kennedy
This is a duology. It's done.
Reggie
So Ologies are great.
Kennedy
Yeah, it's just done. So it was really good. I really liked it. So I'll get to it eventually. Don't know when it's on my shelf. I'll get to it. I'll get to it. Okay. My next four star read was a romance book. Michaela also read this one. You rated it four and a half stars. Yeah, I technically rated it five stars, like as my star rating. Oh, but in your Goodreads review, you put four and a half. So it's airing on. Okay, got it. Yeah. The book is All Roads Lead Here by Mariana. Mariana. Mariana. Mariana. Donna Zapata. We talked about Mariana Zapata before on the podcast. She is a true slow burn. Like, I feel like with this one, it's very realistic. Oh, my gosh. It's one of the most realistic romance books I've ever read.
Reggie
I don't know why I haven't heard of it until I saw you guys put, like recently.
Kennedy
Heather loves it. It's one of her favorite. She talks about all that. She used to talk about it all the time. That's how I knew about it. But it, like I finished it or while I was listening to it finishing it, I thought to myself, this is literally so realistic of how someone actually falls in love and how they meet and their interactions. They were two well adjusted adults. He was what, 40, 40 something. Silver fox. She's was really, really good, I would say. The only thing is, and I knew this going into her books, this book, whatever, all of her books, they're a little long and they tend to burn a little too long for me, just a smidge. That's why I didn't rate it 5 stars. That and honestly, once again, I should have read it. I think if I would have read this book, probably would have been a five star read because it has. It had everything that I like. It had the recipe for everything I love about romance books. Between the great relationship, there was underlying subplots that were emotional, there was side characters that you come to love. The setting was there banter was there. I think I just listened to it and I should have read it. I really, really enjoyed that book. Yeah, I think it's actually one of my highest romance books. See, I wish I would have read it because I know if I would have read it. I found this out about myself and I can't remember if I was talking to both of you about this or one of you. I don't remember. But most romance books that I read I rate pretty highly because the books that I read that are romance. Emily, Henry, Abby Jimenez. So I wish I just need to give more romance books a shot physically reading instead of listening to them.
Reggie
Same.
Kennedy
And I think I would rate them a lot higher. Once again, this one being one of them, I think this would be one in a year, a year and a half, once my brain is wiped. My reading retention isn't great, as we found out earlier on in the episode. I would reread this and really enjoy it. If you ever want a romance slow burn. So far out of the books that I have read of hers, this one's my favorite by far. Yeah.
Reggie
All right, move it up. My tbr.
Kennedy
It's really good. It's really sweet.
Reggie
Is it my turn? Since Kennedy's gonna be physically reading this next romance book, I'll talk about it for two seconds without sharing, like too much, obviously, but One Golden Summer by Carly Fortune. I gave it 4.25 stars. I won't share. Well, there's a lot I really, really liked about this if you haven't already. Read every summer after. Read every summer after. First by Carly Fortune. I didn't personally love that one, so you could skip it if you want. But just know that like that Book will be spoiled for you if you start read One Golden Summer first. Because it's about the other brother. Should I say that?
Kennedy
Yeah. I mean, it doesn't give away. Yeah, it doesn't give away.
Reggie
Yeah, it's about. It's about the other brother, which I didn't put that together until there was something said. And I was like, wait, this is like him. Like, I was like, oh. And then I saw Sarah Caroly posted like a similar of. And I was like, wait a second. So the vibes are there. You're on the coast of a. You're in a little, like lake house vibes. Okay. There's this girl who. She's a photographer. And so that was really fun and relatable to me. I feel like there were a lot of really great quotes in it. As somebody who, you know, when you can get a little good quote that has to do with something that is a part of your life, it's just like with icing on the cake, you know, it was. It was really fun to pick up on some of those things. I really liked the male main character. There's a lot of. It's very witty, lots of teasing banter, which is really fun. So, like, with the. All that and then the vibes, it was really enjoyable. There's also, like, you know, every good romance book, I feel like, has a good side story, like a family vibe. And so I really liked that element to it. It had me, like, tearing up a lot. Like, I was thinking of my grandma a lot and I was like, yeah, so it's. It's definitely a fun one, honestly, like, the COVID of this book, that's the vibe. You look at the COVID and that's the vibe you get for this book.
Kennedy
So it's partly why I actually decided to physically read it. Yeah.
Reggie
I guess I can say this for one reason why I didn't write it. Higher. I mean, I don't typically rate romance books, like five stars. I say that as I just gave two romance books five stars actually. But there were just sometimes that things felt a little corny. Just like a little too cheesy or at times. Yeah, a little hallmarky, if you will. But yeah, it was really, really fun. Good summer read. For sure.
Kennedy
I think that's going to be my next physical read after Silver Elite. So.
Reggie
Yeah, I'm excited for you. I'll be interested to see.
Kennedy
It's our book club book for Hawaii.
Reggie
Cute.
Kennedy
That's a. I feel. I mean, I haven't read it, but I feel like it's a good one. Yeah.
Reggie
Oh, it will be perfect.
Kennedy
Yeah.
Reggie
Perfect beach read.
Kennedy
Not like the last one you guys picked. No, that was not a good one. Yeah. I would like to say I didn't pick that one. Who picked up? I don't remember who picked it. I think we were just at a Target and we're like, not in love, right?
Reggie
Yeah, not in love.
Kennedy
Ali Hazelwood was their last friend group book club on the beach. The first thing, it was like, this is an erotica. We're like, oh, we couldn't read the COVID or, like, anything before we all purchased it. It was funny.
Reggie
It great.
Kennedy
It was a great time discussing it. Poor memory. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, it's me. Yeah. Okay. One of my most recent 4 stars. Never by Jessa Hastings. Okay. You know what? I'm so surprised by this. I. I know. I don't know why I thought that you were going to hate it, because just knowing you and just, like, your love of, like, Disney stuff, whatever. I just thought you were going to hate the way that Peter Pan was portrayed. Oh, well, I. Peter Pan isn't, like, my favorite anyways. Yeah. But I just thought. I don't know why. I don't know. Something about it just works. It's like, I don't know, a writing style. I have a love hate relationship with it. I don't know. But I really enjoyed it. So I think. Yeah, her writing style just really shines in a whimsical setting. And I don't know if you guys saw this, but I think, take this with a grain of salt, I could be making this up. I don't know if she actually posted this. Maybe I dreamed it, but I'm pretty sure she did. Maybe you guys saw it, too. I think she said that her favorite book to write was Never Never. It wouldn't surprise me. I think. I also think that my expectations for it were low because of you guys. Yeah. I don't know. You're welcome. Maybe we just need to start doing that with every. This book sucks. No. But also, like, I feel like I knew what I was walking into with Jessa's writing. Yeah. And, like, with her characters. Her characters are very infuriating. And, like, I just knew that going into it, but I loved, loved, loved the setting of it. Like, I was obsessed with it, and the ending actually made me want to strangle people. Yeah. Oh, I'm gonna throw hands. Yeah. I just. Something about it. I also love pirates. Yeah. You know, like, those vibes. I. You know, so, yeah, I liked it. And I think it was such a cool. Once again, Jessa's writing just bends genres because you've got that whimsical kind of almost fantasy element, but it's romance, but not. I just love. And this won't make sense if you haven't read the book, but the bags, the baggage was such an ingenious concept that I don't know how she thought of that. Yeah, I was obsessed. So cool. So cool. Piano, piano, piano, piano. I loved it. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Maybe that's convincing you guys to read it. I feel like whenever me and Reggie have talked about it, we were kind of. I don't know. It's. It anyway.
Reggie
Yeah.
Kennedy
I don't know. Something about it just works for me. I mean, I rated it four stars. Yeah. So the COVID is gorgeous, as per usual. I talked about this a little bit on another episode, so I won't dive too deep into it. And I think the book should be out by the time this episode comes out. I'm not entirely sure on the release date, but my another recent four star read was Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil by V E. Schwab. And the best way I can describe this book, if you are a fan of V E. Schwab's writing, is if you take the toxicity and violence from Vicious and then the vibes of Addie Larue and meshed them together, that's what you would get with this book. So basically, you follow three lesbian vampires and they're absolutely all toxic. What's cool about V E. Schwab's writing is it just. I feel like every book that I read, it transports me into the book. The way that she writes just is very vivid and I can see everything really clearly. The one thing that I didn't necessarily love about this book, and it's the same problem I had with the Secret Life of Addie Larue was the pacing is just a little bit funky for me. I don't always love a dual timeline in the sense of when it's like jumping back and forth a ton and I'm talking like, I think it was jumping back to the 1700s and then 2020. So it's hard. I feel like when it jumps back and forth a lot, it did work for me in this sense because it was very clear, because you had. It was clear but unclear at the same time because you'd have a person's pov, but you didn't know if it was what time period. No, actually, it literally lists a time period underneath her name. I don't know what I'm talking about. But yeah, I think if you're wanting something really unique and you want vampires in a way that hasn't been done before, I think you'll really like this book. And if you are a fan of V. Schwab's writing, you're obviously gonna like this one. So I think the biggest reason I didn't give it five stars was just the pacing. And that's I think why I give most of V. Schwab's books not five stars. It's just pacing wise. It doesn't always jive with me. I'm a really impatient reader. I've come to find out. I don't like to have to wait for answers. I don't like any luls and plot. I like it to be very high octane, balls to the wall. So if it's not. If it's a little bit cozy, I don't know. So that's my review of Barrier Bones in the Midnight Soil.
Reggie
Love.
Kennedy
Very good. Though.
Reggie
I'm having a hard time because most of my four star reads have been like thrown of glass, which I've already talked about. And then my other one is the Fractured Dark. But then before that, if it's not thrown a glass or the blighted stars, it's literally. Say you'll Remember. Like it's huge.
Kennedy
Crazy.
Reggie
Yeah.
Kennedy
The rest like three stars. Five stars.
Reggie
Yeah, most of them are like. I had like a little. Yeah, it was like a three or five stars. So I don't want to really talk. I. I'm kind. I don't need to talk about the devoured worlds anymore than I have. So just know that the second book for me was a four star read.
Kennedy
First one, five stars.
Reggie
We barely talked about say youy'll Remember Me. Oh yeah. The first one was five stars for me.
Kennedy
Okay. We can chat about say youy'll Remember Me.
Reggie
But say youy'll Remember Me. I mean it's. It's. I read it in April, like when it first came out. Technically. Actually, no. I gave it 3.75.
Kennedy
That's okay. 3.75.
Reggie
I gave it 3.75.
Kennedy
Round it up.
Reggie
It's. I. I'm trying to remember. I think the Friend Zone's my like least favorite of all Abby Jimena's. This one would probably come seconds.
Kennedy
I agree.
Reggie
I just felt like there were some things that were like. It was funny for a second and then I was just like, okay, we. We don't have to keep talking about said thing. There are just a few things that took me out of the story a little bit. But it was very tender. I was very giddy. Like I did a reading vlog of me reading this for one of our vlogs and I was like, I just remember there's like this certain scene I was like cutting up my dinner in the kitchen with my audiobook headphones on. And I was like jumping up and down, like, giddy. So Abby does have that effect on me. So from the beginning I was like, oh, this is gonna be a five star read, Abby. I was like so hyped. And then a lot of things just kind of felt not. Not a lot of things. There are just some things that fell flat. There's something that was missing for me. But yeah, I think a lot of it was just that things were. Got a little repetitive. But yeah, very tender, very. There's some fun little circumstances that happen that were just like really funny.
Kennedy
Yeah.
Reggie
And I love, I do love Abby. Abby's writing and the dual point of view is so enjoyable to me, but.
Kennedy
Her writing just kind of feels like a cozy little hug. I don't know, I don't know what it is about it, but I do agree that it got a little repetitive. But it's hard when you're writing a plot like that for it not to be, you know. Well, I also, I feel like I was kind of bugged with the trying to be trendy and relatable. Oh my gosh. I hate when there's tick tock lingo and yeah.
Reggie
References to trends.
Kennedy
Takes me out a bit. Yeah, I, I can handle maybe one or two because I, I understand trying to be relatable because there was a time when every. I don't know if you guys asked your husband when it was like, would you love me if I was a worm? You know, like relatable. Okay. Haha. You would ask your partner that. Whatever. But then there was just.
Reggie
There were just a lot of.
Kennedy
Yeah. And it takes me out of it because I want to suspend disbelief. Yeah. You know?
Reggie
Yes. That one was like, yeah, like 3.75. But I'll count it for this episode because literally, you guys, after that I'm like, all my other reads were three stars. Like my other four star read wasn't in February.
Kennedy
That's crazy.
Reggie
So, yeah, that's pretty much my recap. My four star reads of the year.
Kennedy
All the Abby Jimenez books. I think I've rated all of them four stars except for the Friend Zone. Oh, so you're opposite to Reggie.
Reggie
No, no, so like the Friend Zone, you rated the lowest?
Kennedy
Yeah. Oh, I rated all of them four.
Reggie
Stars except for the front film.
Kennedy
Oh, I thought you meant you wrote the.
Reggie
Have you rated any of them five stars?
Kennedy
No. Have you read any romance book five stars. The all roads lead here. I think that's. That's my highest rated romance book. Yeah, there you go.
Reggie
See, I think I gave yours truly and just for the summer five stars. But it's so hard because I feel like I. When I rate romance books, I have to rate romance books strictly in its own genre. Same like I can't.
Kennedy
They'll never compare to fantasy books.
Reggie
They'll never. Yeah, I just don't for so many different reasons.
Kennedy
Fantasy books are just so much more high stakes a lot of the times. You're spending a lot more time with the characters so you have more of an emotional attachment. There's just. Yeah, you gotta separate. Yeah, yeah, I agree. I could probably, I probably would go back and rate some of them maybe like 4.5 for Abby Jimenez. But I don't know, I don't know.
Reggie
Even looking back, some of the ones I wrote rated 5 stars.
Kennedy
Very rare for me.
Reggie
Yeah, I think I would probably honestly go back and not rate the five star. Like I don't think I would rate yours truly or just for the summer.
Kennedy
Five stars because stand by my five stars. They're really good though. I. I loved them, but I really haven't rated like anything five stars for romances. You know, I just gotta tell myself there was a reason. There was a reason Kennedy rated that five stars. Yeah. She gonna leave it. Yours truly though is so precious. I just love. Yeah, okay. I will say the thing I loved about Abby Jimenez. I think it portrayed a realistic. The difficulty of like long distance. Okay, I have one more four star read and this was spur of the moment. I randomly got access to on the Libby app and I said sure, why not? So that is the House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klun. Honestly, the crazy thing is I know this is a really popular booktok book, but I didn't know anything about it. All I knew was that it was a cozy fantasy book. And I think this is my first true cozy fantasy. And this is a sub genre of fantasy that I think I would have to be really in the mood for. I started Tress of the Emerald Sea a few like a month and a half ago and I made it three hours in and I realized I was not in the mood for this. So anyways, cozy fantasy. I started House of The Cerulean Sea rated at four stars. And the best way I can describe this book is it's the equivalent of drinking, like, hot chocolate. You know when you drink hot chocolate and it, like, warms your insides, but it's like, sickeningly sweet. That's exactly what this was. It was warm, cozy, made me feel good. But also the verb verbiage used and just the way that the characters taught it was like, sickeningly sweet. A little bit cringey at times. I don't know, you're probably too young for this, Mikayla, but did you ever watch Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends? No. Did you?
Reggie
I didn't really watch it, but I know exactly what you're talking about.
Kennedy
So that's what this was. Essentially, this guy goes out to this orphanage and is working for this company and reporting back to his company on whether or not it's a safe condition for these kids. And all these kids have powers. So kind of like Ms. Parrigan's house. I've never seen that, but yeah, they have, like, different powers or abilities. Yeah. Yeah. So that's basically the plot of the book. It was sweet. Cute. I don't think I probably. I don't think I'll read the next one because I think there's two books in this series, but cute. Feel good. Fantasy, fun. Yeah. Love it. Okay, the last one we got N on a Bang. N on a Bang. It's Listen for the Lie by Amy Tintira. Oh, I know what the COVID looks like. Let me see. Yep. It was a very spur of the moment listen. Thriller. It's a thriller. It was really good. Really good. Ooh, the. The audiobook was fun because there's a podcast kind of portion of it. And so I like. You listen to. Anyways, there's a. There's a big mystery on what happened, and part of it is listening to the podcast, trying to figure out what happened.
Reggie
So cool.
Kennedy
It was kind of fun. Okay. Good. Girl's Guide to Murder. Kind of fun, kind of different, unique. And I'm trying to remember, I think, like, the voices, like, everyone, all the characters had different voices on the podcast too. So it was just something different. And I don't know, sometimes you gotta sprinkle in the thrillers every once in a while just to, like, kind of change it up.
Reggie
And it.
Kennedy
Yeah, it was. It's not anything like super crazy. You guys might be able to. I guess what happens. I kind of like. I got it right before it was like, revealed, so it wasn't like I don't know. To me, it wasn't too. What's it called? Obvious. But maybe it's obvious for other people. Thrillers are so hard for me because I complain when they're outrageous. Yeah. But then I complain when they're easy to get. Yeah. When they're easy to solve. Yeah. I wouldn't say this is out. It's not outrageous.
Reggie
Right.
Kennedy
Makes sense everything. But I. I don't know, I couldn't. I couldn't figure out until later, but maybe you could. I don't know. I think I'm dumb. No, I just read and go for the vibe. I know you have to tell me if they like, figured it out. Figured it out before, like, kind of all the context clues were put in place. But I don't know, I think it was good where it wasn't too obvious. Maybe I'll add that to my fall tbr. Okay. Yeah, I think that would be fun. Like a good fall. Yeah.
Reggie
Cozy reads.
Kennedy
And I. Yeah. And I know it's not like a. Not really, like, is there something really, like, gross, you know, what's. Is it. Is it a murder they're trying to solve or. Yeah, okay. Yeah. Murder that they're trying to solve. All right. It's the main character's best friend. Okay. And everyone thinks that she did it. She gotta prove herself innocent. Well, there are some of our four star reads. Hopefully you've got some new book recommendations and it's a reminder that, you know, three star reads are great. Four star reads are great. Five star reads are great. There's a time and a place for all of them. Right. Just because you don't read a book five stars doesn't mean you didn't love it. Yeah. So I think, yeah, the whole point of this episode were books that we really enjoyed weren't quite five stars. Just missed a tiny, teeny little thing. Yeah. So let us know if you guys read any of those books or if you have already read them. Reggie
Yes.
Kennedy
So other than that, we don't have anything else for you guys. Anything else you you'd like to add? No.
Reggie
Have a great reading week.
Kennedy
Yeah. Happy reading and we'll see you next week. Bye.

Podcast Summary: "Our Latest FOUR STAR Reads"
I'll Read What She's Reading hosts Reggie, Mikayla, and Kennedy delve into their latest four-star book recommendations in this engaging episode released on July 16, 2025. The episode not only highlights their favorite mid-tier reads but also includes a beloved segment where they exchange and discuss books they've selected for one another. Below is a comprehensive summary capturing the essence of their discussions, enriched with notable quotes and timestamps for reference.
Kennedy opens the episode by highlighting the often-overlooked category of four-star books. She remarks, "honestly, I rate a lot more books 3 and 4 stars than I do 5 stars," (00:28) emphasizing the value and enjoyment found in these middle-tier selections. The trio aims to provide listeners with quality recommendations that might not always make the five-star cut but still offer significant enjoyment.
Before diving into their individual four-star picks, the hosts engage in their favorite unnamed segment, where they review books they've previously selected for one another and introduce new recommendations.
Mikayla shares her thoughts on "Legend Born," a book Reggie recommended. She praises the unique magic system, stating, "It's never been read a Magic System like that," (02:00). However, Mikayla points out challenges with the protagonist's age, saying, "the main character being 16... I just have a hard time with that," (02:15). Despite these hurdles, she appreciates the book's uniqueness and expresses intent to continue the series.
Reggie discusses "Once Upon a Broken Heart," chosen by Mikayla. She admits to struggling with the audiobook format and balancing it with other reading commitments. Reggie shares, "I have not really sat down to read a physical book. I am just on the audiobook train," (04:35), expressing a desire to eventually revisit the book to fully appreciate its depth.
Mikayla reviews "Summer Will Be Different" by Carly Fortune, a book Reggie suggested. She rates it 3.5 stars, mentioning, "Probably would have liked this even more if I read it and not listened to it," (09:38). Mikayla appreciates the book's vibes and witty banter but notes a lack of memorable retention, hinting at a potential reread in the future.
Kennedy introduces "When in Rome" by Sarah, another recommendation from Reggie. She describes it as a "super simple love... a fun, easy read for the summer," (12:18), appreciating its lightheartedness and small-town charm. This selection aims to provide a relaxing summer read with engaging characters and a pleasant storyline.
Kennedy presents "Sword of Kaigen," rating it four and a half stars (16:00). She highlights the standout female protagonist, remarking, "Our female main character, main character in this book is a monster," (16:36), praising her unique characterization. However, she notes pacing issues and complexities in the world-building, advising listeners to utilize the provided glossary for better understanding.
Reggie revisits the "Throne of Glass" series, particularly "Queen of Shadows." Initially rating it at three stars, she retrospectively upgrades it to four and a half stars after re-reading. Reggie shares her journey of reassessing the series, stating, "Reading really can play, like, the time and place you read a book can literally change everything for you," (21:30). She emphasizes the importance of context and personal growth in appreciating literary works.
Kennedy discusses "Rebel Witch," the first book in Kristen Cicero's duology. She enjoys the witchy elements and whimsical setting, rating it five stars (23:27). The sequel, "Heartless Hunter," receives high praise for maintaining the magical allure while introducing deeper character development. Kennedy appreciates the originality and fun narrative style, making it a standout in her four-star selection.
Mikayla reviews "All Roads Lead Here," a slow-burn romance by Mariana Zapata. Rating it four and a half stars (26:40), she lauds its realistic portrayal of romance and emotional subplots. However, Mikayla mentions the length and audiobook format slightly detracted from her experience, suggesting that a physical read might enhance appreciation.
Reggie introduces "One Golden Summer," a continuation of Carly Fortune's universe. She rates it 4.25 stars (30:03), praising its witty banter and heartfelt family dynamics. Reggie describes it as a fun summer read with memorable quotes and a relatable protagonist, though she notes occasional corny moments.
Mikayla discusses "Never" by Jessa Hastings, rating it four stars (29:07). She admires the whimsical setting and innovative plot elements, such as the concept of "bags" or "baggage," which adds depth to the narrative. Despite loving the setting and imaginative storytelling, Mikayla finds certain character portrayals infuriating but ultimately appreciates the book's unique charm.
Kennedy reviews "Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil," a dark fantasy novel by V.E. Schwab. Rating it four stars (36:01), she compares it to "Vicious" and "Addie Raine" for its toxicity and violence intertwined with beautiful prose. Kennedy praises Schwab's vivid writing yet critiques the pacing and frequent timeline jumps, which slightly hinder her full enjoyment of the book.
The hosts wrap up by reaffirming the value of four-star reads, emphasizing that these books offer substantial enjoyment and unique perspectives without the need to attain perfection. Kennedy concludes, "Just because you don't read a book five stars doesn't mean you didn't love it," (49:00), encouraging listeners to explore a variety of reads based on personal preference rather than strict ratings.
They also tease upcoming merchandise collaborations and invite listeners to share their thoughts on the discussed books via their Goodreads account and Instagram.
I'll Read What She's Reading continues to deliver insightful and entertaining book discussions, making it a valuable resource for book enthusiasts seeking thoughtful recommendations beyond the usual five-star bestsellers. This episode's focus on four-star reads underscores the hosts' dedication to celebrating a diverse range of literary works, ensuring that every listener finds something that resonates with their reading tastes.
