Kennedy
Foreign.
Reggie
Hello, everybody. Welcome back to I'll read what she's reading. I'm Reggie.
Mikayla
I'm Mikayla. And I'm Kennedy.
Reggie
Today we're going to be discussing our books that we've read in the past and asking each other, would you read it again? And the fun part about this little test is that we don't know what books we're gonna. Are gonna be thrown at us. So we've gone through each other's Goodreads and I'm gonna. I've picked like a random book from Kennedy's Goodreads and I'm gonna ask her if she would read it again and if she were to read it now instead of in the past, if her rating would be different. And I think this might stir up some interesting conversation. So should we just jump right on into it?
Kennedy
Let's do it.
Reggie
Mikayla, let's have you picks for Kennedy.
Kennedy
For Kennedy. I was giggling. Not that I think they're. I don't think they're super outlandish, but I'm just genuinely curious. These have been questions that have been harboring on my mind for a long time.
Reggie
Just kidding.
Kennedy
The last one, the first one is Dance of Thieves.
Reggie
Ooh.
Mikayla
By Harry Pearson.
Kennedy
Yes.
Mikayla
You want to know what's funny is I always said that Acotar was the first fantasy book that I read, but it's actually that. Yeah. Oh. That was the first fantasy book I ever read. I remember where I was when I read it and I would 100% reread it.
Reggie
Do you read it?
Kennedy
You would like it as much as you did then.
Mikayla
I think I rated it four stars, if I'm remembering correctly. I also remember the end of that book. I chucked my book across the room. It has such a good ending.
Kennedy
Yeah.
Mikayla
I think I would rate it very similarly now.
Kennedy
Yeah.
Mikayla
Just remembering the plot and how I don't feel like it's super romantasy trope heavy like the romantasy books I've been reading lately. So I think I would really enjoy it. It's funny because I actually was thinking about rereading it a few weeks ago.
Reggie
Really?
Mikayla
Just to see if I liked it as much. But a part of me also kind of wants to read the series you're supposed to read before you read that one, the Kiss of Deception. Have you read that?
Kennedy
No, but I have them.
Mikayla
Okay. A part of me wants to read that before I go back and hang out with Jace and Causie again. See, I remember both of their names. Like I remember a lot from that book. Shackled together through the wilderness. Enemies to lovers. True enemies to lovers.
Kennedy
Yeah.
Mikayla
If I remember correctly.
Reggie
Yeah.
Mikayla
I would 100 reread it, and I think I would rate it very similarly. All right. Have you read that?
Kennedy
Yeah. Oh, yeah, Love.
Reggie
I think I would almost rate it higher if I read it now. I think I kind of read it at a bad time.
Kennedy
What did you read it?
Reggie
I think three stars.
Kennedy
Yeah.
Mikayla
I remember reading it on a plane, and it was really hard for me to get into originally because it was the first fantasy book I read.
Kennedy
Yeah. The beginning is kind of slower once you get into it.
Mikayla
And I've heard if you've read the other series before, it's really easy to get into because you already have been in the world. But great pick. I have such a fond little attachment to those books. I also think they're beautiful.
Reggie
Yeah.
Mikayla
They're so pretty.
Kennedy
I like the covers a lot.
Reggie
And it's only two books, right?
Kennedy
Yeah.
Reggie
So, yeah, sorry. I feel like what we can say about it is that it's about.
Kennedy
Yeah.
Reggie
These two very different people who somehow get chained together. They are enemies and they have to make their way across the wilderness together, but they are literally tied together.
Kennedy
So.
Mikayla
Good.
Reggie
Yeah. Yeah. So, Mikaela, I did pick that one for you.
Mikayla
Oh, sure.
Reggie
So I'm just gonna. Just to go along with that. What did you originally rated it? Oh, I screenshotted your rating. Hold on.
Kennedy
Five stars?
Reggie
Yes. You rated it. Five stars. If you were to read it again right now, like, reread it, would you enjoy it just as much?
Kennedy
I think so, yes. Just because it's, like, nostalgic. Because I read it once I read it.
Reggie
Oh, I didn't screenshot exactly when I
Kennedy
read it four years ago.
Mikayla
That's crazy.
Reggie
Long time.
Kennedy
Four years ago. And so I was like, I only have a star rating. I don't even have, like, written, like.
Reggie
So do you think that if you hadn't ever read it and you were to pick it up right now, do you think you would still rate it 5 stars?
Mikayla
I think I would, yeah.
Kennedy
I don't know. The thing about Dance of Thieves, it's literally everything that I would want in, like, a fantasy book. Yeah. I don't know. Like, it just. It marks off everything that I want,
Mikayla
and I feel like it's well done.
Kennedy
Yeah.
Reggie
That's why I wish I would have read it at a different time or, like, hadn't read it and could pick it up right now and.
Kennedy
Yeah.
Reggie
Read it.
Kennedy
I think I would still love it. I don't Know, I feel like I was a little looser with my five stars back then, but I think I would still rate it maybe like 4 or 4.5 if I were to, like, reread it again. But if, like, having the prior knowledge, I think I would just be as giddy to, like, reread it. Just to be back in those, like, scenes with those characters, you know?
Reggie
I don't know.
Mikayla
I just love it.
Kennedy
Yeah.
Mikayla
Such a good book. All right, is it my turn?
Reggie
Yeah. Okay.
Mikayla
Reggie. I'm picking one for Reggie because you've done one for Michaela.
Kennedy
Yeah.
Reggie
Okay.
Mikayla
I'm Gonna Give youe Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Gabrielle.
Reggie
I had a feeling this one was gonna come up. You know, it's fun. I did give this book 5 stars when I first read it, and I remember really enjoying it. But do you know how long ago I read that? It's been a long time.
Mikayla
Like two years probably.
Reggie
I feel like it's been longer. I feel like I would not rate it five stars now because, honestly, I've forgotten a lot of things because it's been picked up for an adaptation and I want to say they have a cast already. There's still things about it that I remember, and there were, like, a lot of really great quotes, and I really enjoyed my reading experience with it. But I think if I were to read it now, I don't know, maybe I would actually appreciate it more than I did. But it's just like, I don't remember so much of it now and I wouldn't be dying to pick it up. I do think that maybe before the movie comes out, I could see myself rereading it. Because I'm very curious to see. Because I have forgotten so much about it. I'm curious to see what I would think. But I do think it was one of those books I rated five stars. And then a few months later, I was like, maybe that's not a five star read. But in a way, I almost wonder if it would be a five star read now because I think I could maybe appreciate it a little more. But I could also see myself reading it and being like, oh, so. I don't know.
Mikayla
I remember I fell into the hype when I read it. I felt, like, pressure to rate it 5 stars.
Reggie
I.
Mikayla
Even when I first read it, I was like, yeah, this isn't a five star read, but I feel pressured to make it a five star read.
Kennedy
Yeah, Yeah.
Reggie
I don't.
Mikayla
I think, yeah, I agree with you.
Reggie
I never even remember. I just remember it's like these two childhood best friends, he makes video games and then it's just like their story is friends. Story is friends. Throughout the course of. Oh, I'm remembering some certain things about it, though.
Mikayla
I do remember I thought it was really cool because in the middle of the book, it like changes POVs or something and it does something really weird in the middle. Can't remember quite what it is.
Reggie
Like, you get to read through the walkthrough of the video game, which was kind of cool.
Mikayla
See, I don't even remember that.
Kennedy
I had that on my. Want to read and for some reason I took it off.
Mikayla
I don't know.
Kennedy
I don't know.
Mikayla
So did you say whether or not you would reread it?
Reggie
I think I would. Especially since it's being adapted. I think I'd be curious to see what I think of it now because, yeah, like, I can remember bits and pieces here and there of things that happened. Like, I remember there's like a big plot twist and I remember that. But I don't know, I think I just had, like, a lot of love. I think the reason I loved it so much was the characters. I think I just cared about them so much and I'd be interested to read it again to see if I care about them as much as I did the first time.
Mikayla
Yeah, you said the characters were so intricate. You loved their stories and felt very connected to them.
Reggie
Well, see, I do remember that.
Mikayla
There you go.
Kennedy
Dang.
Reggie
But yeah, I'd be curious because I feel like when I first read it, it was like, pretty popular, so a lot of people were reading it pretty highly. What's the average rating? Do you have it pulled up right now?
Mikayla
Yes, the Average rating is 4.1.
Kennedy
Okay, can I guess that?
Mikayla
So it's pretty.
Reggie
Pretty high. Interesting. Yeah, I don't. I'm curious to look up the adaptation.
Mikayla
Daisy. Daisy Edgar Jones is cast as the female lead. They don't have a cast casting for the male lead yet. Okay.
Reggie
Sam. Or is that the other one?
Mikayla
It's Sam.
Reggie
Sam.
Kennedy
Yeah. I swear, maybe I'll give it a whirl. With watching it, I almost maybe kind
Mikayla
of feel like the adaptation will be better. I have some faith in Daisy Edgar Jones, actually. I feel like she's a pretty good actress.
Kennedy
Yeah.
Mikayla
And she did really. Everybody loves her in. What is it? Normal People. I haven't seen it, but I don't
Reggie
know if you guys picked that one for me, but that's a book I've been thinking about recently.
Mikayla
I did not pick that One I
Reggie
almost did because I've been seeing so many edits to it from, like, Noah Khan's new album. Yeah, I think I DNF the book. Maybe I did, or I at least skimmed the end of it because I was so bored. But I think that's one of those books that if I read it now, I might really like it.
Mikayla
I don't. I've only. I think that's the only Sally Rooney book I read. I think I tried another one and didn't love it. But anyways. All right, Michaela, what's your next book for Reggie?
Kennedy
I'm excited about this one. Daughter of no Worlds.
Mikayla
Would you fetch her? I had that a little. Sorry.
Reggie
You know what?
Kennedy
By Carissa Broadbent.
Reggie
What? Did I rate it? Do you have my rating pulled up?
Mikayla
I don't remember. I want to guess.
Reggie
I rated it four and a half stars.
Kennedy
I think. You rated it four. Four and a half.
Reggie
Yeah. I think if. Like, I would definitely reread those books. I just want to give it, like, a long enough time so I, like, forget.
Kennedy
Forget things.
Mikayla
Things.
Reggie
But I think I would still probably rate it the same.
Mikayla
I gotta pull it up.
Kennedy
Let me know if you can.
Mikayla
Yeah, Goodreads is down for me.
Reggie
Yeah, Goodreads is not working right now. Yeah, I want to say I gave it between, like, four and five stars. I just really like it because, one, it's just not talked about very much. And so I think there's just something really special. Like, it feels really special to have a series that you love that not a lot of people have almost yet discovered. Like, you want more people to read it, but it feels special because you feel like you're in this special club of people that have gotten to experience it before. A ton of people have. I mean, a lot of people have read it, but it's just not nearly as popular as Crowns of Naxia. I think I would rate it the same. I mean, the series as a whole. I don't know. I think the only thing. Like, the only negative thing I would have to say about those books is just that Carissa's pacing in them is just kind of all over the place. I didn't love the pacing of the book, but there's just something I love about that story. And I just. I just love. Honestly, my favorite character isn't even Tisanna. I think my favorite character is Max, Sweetie. And another character that I won't say because they're not. I don't think they're introduced in. Anyways, There's Another, like, element to the story that I really love. So I think I'd rate them the same. I think I would enjoy them about just as much, honestly, if not more, because the. Well, the first time I read the series, I accidentally spoiled a big plot twist for myself.
Mikayla
Sad.
Reggie
Never look up fan art or fan cast of things when you're reading a book, you guys. It will never. But I was like, oh, I'm safe because I'm almost done with the book.
Mikayla
No.
Reggie
So, yeah, I just love. I don't know, there's something about that, those three books that just feels really special to me. But I think it might just be the fact that it's just not, like, overly talked about. So. You know what I mean?
Mikayla
Let's ask this question for all three of us. Would you rather reread the War of Lost Hearts trilogy or the Crowns of Nyaxia?
Kennedy
Crowns of Nyaxia.
Mikayla
Mine's going to be Crowns of Nyaxia
Reggie
as well, but all of them. That's the thing is, like, I would reread the first two, but I don't know if I want to reread the other ones.
Mikayla
I mean, I don't know. I haven't read the fourth one still. Yeah. But where I'm at in the series of Crowns of Nyaxi, I think I would choose.
Kennedy
Yeah, that one. Probably same. Yeah.
Reggie
There's something about the first two of the Crowns of Nyaxia that is just more exciting. Whereas I think the War of Lost Hearts fills. What's the word I'm looking for?
Mikayla
I. I think the reason I'm. I say the Crowns of Nyaxia is because when I read the Crowns of Naxia, I hadn't read Vampires. Like, it was very new and fresh. I think War of Lost Hearts trilogy. I'm not saying it's been done before, because it's. It hasn't been. The story is completely different, but, like, the chosen. You know what I mean? Kind of like that trope I had read so many times before.
Reggie
Yeah.
Mikayla
So it felt similar, but also different at the same time.
Reggie
Yeah.
Mikayla
Crowns of NXT is just like my first vampire book, you know? Although they all terrify me. I don't know.
Reggie
Yeah, they're great. If you haven't read any of Carissa Broadband's books, you're really missing out. Crowns of Nyaxia, like, Kennedy said, is vampires. They're like, it's a series, but they're in duets. So there's like two books and then two books and then two books. War of Lost Hearts is just three books, and it follows a girl who's a slave. Yeah, she. She's like a performer, and she's trying to buy her freedom. And in the process of doing that, things just kind of escalate. And she's trying to save a friend and learn more about who she is. I feel like I can't say too much.
Mikayla
Yeah, that's a pretty good way to say.
Reggie
But, like, there's some really cool elements to that story that I absolutely loved. I can think of specific moments throughout those three books where, like, I was crying, I was laughing. I just loved it.
Mikayla
So shout out, Carissa.
Kennedy
Yeah, shout out.
Reggie
Shout out for me, Kennedy. All right, we're gonna just go with number one, Zodiac Academy.
Kennedy
That's literally what I was gonna ask Michaela about.
Mikayla
I'll choose the.
Reggie
I'll read what she's reading.
Mikayla
You know, I think I made it to book four. And have I thought about picking up the series again?
Kennedy
No. It's just such a weird book series.
Mikayla
Like, I honestly think, because we made it to the same point Right. Where you know what happens at the end of the book with two of the characters and it's so frustrating.
Kennedy
I think I started the next one okay. And I stopped. Okay.
Mikayla
Because
Kennedy
let's just say orgy.
Mikayla
See, that's what you get with Zodiac Academy.
Kennedy
It's just.
Mikayla
It's literally trash reality TV with fantasy elements, plot points. Yeah. And it's like looking back on it. I had a fun time listening to it because it's really entertaining. But was it great? No. No. I would not reread it. Would I continue. Maybe if I was really bored and I had access to it on Libby.
Kennedy
It's just like, I sometimes low key, forget about it until someone brings it up and I'm like, yeah. Oh, yeah. I've read the first few of those
Mikayla
and there's redeeming parts of the book kind of.
Kennedy
It's just the weirdest.
Mikayla
If you've read it, you know it, and I know people love it, but I just think there's too many books to justify the same thing over and over again.
Kennedy
Yeah.
Mikayla
And also, I. I can't. I don't understand why there's also then books from the boys point of views. And just also there's one on the moon.
Reggie
On the moon. I've been telling Kennedy and Michaela that we need to do like, a series of them explaining this book to me at this point, because every time they say something to me, I'm like, what?
Mikayla
At this point, I can't Remember? Doesn't he go to. I swear there's one with Seth on the moon.
Kennedy
The unicorn?
Mikayla
No, he's. Isn't he the wolf? See, I can't remember.
Kennedy
Does he. Oh, wait, I think he does go on the moon.
Mikayla
I think he goes to the moon. Yeah.
Reggie
So my question for you is. So, like, you wouldn't. If you hadn't read them, would you ever probably pick them up now.
Kennedy
Yeah.
Mikayla
Because my curiosity gets the best of me. I probably would, yeah.
Reggie
Would you? Do you feel like the time you picked them up, was it pretty hyped at the time?
Mikayla
No. I think my reaction would be the exact same, though.
Kennedy
Mm.
Reggie
Okay. That's what I was thinking you would say.
Mikayla
Yeah, it's just. It's fun, but it's so stupid. What is it? Fae book.
Kennedy
I can't. Instead of Facebook. Yeah.
Mikayla
They have Fae book. There's bullying and orgies, apparently, so. It's just everything that you could think of is in that book. And I don't necessarily mean that in a good way or a bad way. It's just kind of like.
Reggie
Is it complete?
Kennedy
Yeah, it is. They keep.
Mikayla
They roll books in the boys. Aren't they like.
Reggie
Yeah. I was gonna say, I remember someone making a TikTok video, holding all of the books and saying, here's the order you should read these in. I didn't realize there were so many.
Kennedy
Yeah.
Mikayla
Listen, if any of you feel really passionately that me and Michaela should keep going, let us know.
Kennedy
Yeah.
Mikayla
We made it to book four.
Reggie
Yeah, I think that's what it had on your.
Kennedy
Yeah. So I started book five. The thing is, I was also listening
Reggie
to the graphic audio.
Mikayla
Oh, girl.
Kennedy
Okay.
Mikayla
I did listen to a graphic audio one time and there was literally that in the background. It was awful.
Kennedy
It was traumatizing.
Mikayla
Because the wolves. It was traumatized. Yes. Okay. It's coming back to me. Yeah.
Reggie
Yep.
Kennedy
Wow.
Mikayla
Yeah. Wow. Pack mentality.
Kennedy
Traumatizing.
Mikayla
But, you know, I did love the professor. Lancelot Blue.
Reggie
Yeah. I put him on your. Your book boyfriend bookmark I made you.
Mikayla
I did enjoy.
Kennedy
Whoa.
Mikayla
I really liked him when I read the books.
Kennedy
She did enjoy him.
Reggie
All right, your turn.
Mikayla
Oh, hello.
Kennedy
Sorry.
Mikayla
For Michaela. I'm not going to choose Zodiac Academy. I'm gonna go with.
Kennedy
Oh, no. I'm asking you this for a very specific reason.
Reggie
I don't know. What is it?
Mikayla
Pride by Alex Hazelwood.
Kennedy
No, it's not such a. Reggie, Once
Reggie
again, I'll read what she's reading.
Mikayla
Ride.
Reggie
For a very specific reason. Do you want to Share with the.
Kennedy
You know the reason.
Reggie
Right. Do you want to share with the class or.
Kennedy
No, I think I know the reason.
Mikayla
Yeah.
Kennedy
No, I don't think I would reread it.
Mikayla
Yeah, I don't think I would either.
Kennedy
I've thought about maybe reading Mate. Is that what it's called? Maybe. Because sometimes I just, like, see it at bookstores. I'm like, okay, there's a second one. I forget there's a second one out there. I am traumatized enough from the first one that I remember everything. No, I don't think I would reread it.
Mikayla
What did you rate it, like three stars? I remember it was a book club book.
Kennedy
I think I rated it 3.
Mikayla
I did.
Kennedy
Appreciate. Well, is Ali Hazel the one that started out with writing fanfic of this stuff? So I. I loved that she, like, went back to something that she started with. I just don't think it's my cup of tea. I do really like the element of, like, werewolves, vampires. Different. It's different, right? It's just. I just don't think I'm her ideal audience anymore.
Mikayla
Do you think if her spice level was lower, you would have rated the book higher?
Kennedy
Probably, yeah. Yeah. But like, I. I get it. Some people, that's their cup of tea and I love that for them. I just don't think I.
Mikayla
You know.
Kennedy
Yeah, I don't know. I do really like. I liked the sibling dynamic, but besides that.
Mikayla
Yeah. I don't know. I just don't.
Kennedy
I just like, there's so many books to read that I just don't think I would reread it because of. I didn't like it as much the first time around. And I don't think my opinion would change of it, so.
Mikayla
Well, it's kind of like if you're in the mood for a romance, there's probably romance authors you'd rather read. And if you're in the mood for a fantasy, there's probably other fantasy authors. Yeah, you would want to read. Yeah. And I do feel like. Because I've. I read her what Love Hypothesis and kind of a few in that little series, and they honestly weren't as spicy. But I feel like the more books she writes, the spicier they get. Which. That's great. But.
Kennedy
Yeah, I just. Yeah.
Mikayla
If you haven't read, read me. Go ahead and try it.
Kennedy
Bride.
Mikayla
Bride. My bad, mate's. A second one. It's.
Reggie
Are there only supposed to be the two?
Kennedy
I don't know. I have no idea. I wish Goodreads was working Right now. Then I guess I could use Fable to look.
Mikayla
It might be working again. It's working again. Is it working? Yeah. Let me look. Just kidding. It crashed again. So I don't know. Oh, Google's also free.
Kennedy
Let me look.
Mikayla
Google.
Kennedy
Google.
Reggie
We just rely on Goodreads so much. Yeah, that was a. We did that as a book club book, did we not? We did. Yeah, we did.
Mikayla
I don't know how many books. I can't figure it out.
Kennedy
You know how when you finish a Romantasy and you just need the next thing immediately? Hatch made that a thing.
Reggie
It's called Ophelia. An original audio drama inspired by Hamlet where Ophelia finally gets to be the main character. Forbidden magic, a crumbling kingdom, a slow burn love triangle with a prince and his very guarded, very intriguing best friend. The kind of love triangle where you will absolutely pick a side and you will not be quiet about it.
Mikayla
Book one of the three part series is now available for free wherever you stream with new chapters dropping every Tuesday. For books two and three, check out Hatch co Ophelia. Stay until the end of the episode for the full trailer of Ophelia by Hatch.
Kennedy
Okay, so it's me asking Kennedy.
Reggie
Yeah, Kennedy.
Kennedy
Okay, this is specific. One specific book. But you can answer for the series as well. Okay. Supernova.
Reggie
Oh.
Kennedy
By Marissa Meyer. Or like the series in general.
Mikayla
I would reread that so fast.
Kennedy
You would reread it?
Mikayla
Actually, yeah.
Kennedy
You would enjoy it as much as you did?
Mikayla
I don't know, because it is young adult and I feel like if I read it now, it would feel really young adult. But it's funny you asked this because me and Kyle are rewatching all the X Men movies and literally that book is X Men.
Kennedy
Yeah.
Mikayla
For tweens.
Kennedy
Yeah.
Mikayla
Like straight up Magneto. Charles Xavier. You got there in the book. It's. It was so fun. And I actually am still trying to find a book that's similar to that, just maybe more adult.
Kennedy
Yeah, it's just. It's so good.
Mikayla
And I also. I've tried other Marissa. Marissa Meyer books and they just haven't hit as well. Just not. They feel really young. So I feel like if I did read it now, I don't think I'd probably rate it as high because I know I rated supernova 5 stars. I think it's actually on my like, most valuable books list on Goodreads. I just am a sucker for a superhero story.
Kennedy
Yes.
Mikayla
And there's like a cute little romance in there and so I loved it.
Reggie
Love this Is like, making me feel a lot of nostalgia just hearing us talk about these books that we haven't talked about in so long. Yeah. Like the books we talked about when we started the podcast.
Mikayla
I'm trying to remember. You have the Renegades and the bad guys. It's been, like, three years. Three, four years. The Renegades and the Ren.
Kennedy
I don't know. Oh, gosh, I'll look it up.
Mikayla
But literally, these people have powers. Some of the people in this world have powers. And there's two opposing forces. Good guys and the bad guys.
Kennedy
Arc.
Reggie
Arc.
Kennedy
Enemies.
Reggie
Arc.
Kennedy
Enemies.
Mikayla
Ar Enemies. And the Renegades.
Kennedy
Renegades and Supernova.
Mikayla
So, yeah, I mean, if you guys like X Men, you could try it out, but it will feel pretty young. But I would reread it.
Reggie
Yeah.
Kennedy
I wish it was rewritten just a little more adult.
Mikayla
Like, take. Take the main character and make her, like, 22.
Kennedy
Yeah.
Mikayla
Instead of. Because I think she's pretty young in the book. Yeah.
Kennedy
Like 16.
Mikayla
Yeah.
Kennedy
Yeah.
Mikayla
The someone comes in and kills her parents in front of her. That's the beginning of the book.
Kennedy
Yeah.
Mikayla
I can't remember who it is, but someone comes and kills her parents, and then she's kind of an orphan, and she gets taken in by the bad guys, and the bad guys force her to go to this academy to become a renegade.
Kennedy
Yeah.
Mikayla
And then three books happen after that.
Kennedy
Yep.
Reggie
Love her.
Mikayla
Actually, you guys, I really want to name a child Nova. I love that name so much.
Kennedy
I think it's cute.
Mikayla
That's the name of the main character.
Reggie
Supernova.
Mikayla
My little supernova.
Reggie
Supernova.
Mikayla
Cute. Give her a little cape. Sorry.
Kennedy
Okay.
Reggie
All right, my turn for Michaela. Mikayla.
Kennedy
Oh, boy.
Reggie
I'm gonna go with the Shatter Me series.
Mikayla
Oh,
Reggie
you read that? Wait, I think I have it on here. You read that in 2022? Four years ago.
Kennedy
Years ago.
Reggie
The first book.
Kennedy
No.
Mikayla
Have you read the newest book?
Kennedy
No, I started it, but I didn't finish it. Did not finish. So I didn't get very far into it. But no, I think I read it at the perfect time. Meaning it, like, I devoured them. And I was also so new into my book reading, I hadn't read, like, series that I, like, I don't know, was obsessed with quite yet.
Mikayla
Did you read the novellas?
Kennedy
No, except for the last one. But no, I don't think I would read them because I definitely don't think I would enjoy them as much as I did then. So I just wanted to kind of stay where it was at, and I enjoyed them. Where I was at four years ago.
Mikayla
Yeah. I feel like that's a very, like, tween.
Kennedy
Yeah.
Mikayla
Book series.
Kennedy
Yeah.
Mikayla
Because I feel the same way as you.
Kennedy
Yeah. So, yeah, I wouldn't read it again,
Mikayla
but I do understand why a lot of people love them because it's kind of, like, not as nostalgic as, like, the Hunger Games, but I can see why people have such a love for it.
Reggie
Yeah.
Kennedy
I think it also has a great, like, plot storyline. It's very nostalgic of the,
Mikayla
like, dystopian.
Kennedy
Dystopian, yes. Yeah, dystopian.
Reggie
That's like a series I wish I would have picked up a long time ago. I just never did. And so I can't see myself picking it up now. So that's why I was curious if, like, had you not read them four years ago, if you would pick them up now.
Kennedy
Pick them up now. Probably not. Actually, I think it's telling that you
Mikayla
didn't love the newest book. Okay, Reggie, my book that I'm picking for you is the Last Letter by Rebecca Yarros. Would you reread that?
Reggie
No.
Mikayla
Nope.
Reggie
It's burned into my brain. No need to reread it. I would definitely not read it again.
Mikayla
But is it.
Reggie
Will it be a five stars for forever? Yes. Would I recommend it to anybody?
Kennedy
No.
Reggie
Do I want to see the movie when it comes out?
Mikayla
Absolutely not. That's what I was just gonna ask.
Reggie
Absolutely not. But you wanna know what? I'll watch it.
Mikayla
I'll watch it.
Reggie
I mean, I will watch it.
Mikayla
Does it mean I want to?
Reggie
I'm scared. Does it mean I want to?
Mikayla
No.
Reggie
Oh, man.
Mikayla
It's actually, like a cruel thing.
Reggie
It's just. I don't know, you know, like how you watch, like, sometimes movie, like. I'm trying to decide if I think the book will definitely be better. I think the book is maybe more emotional, but in a way, I'm like, I wonder, depending on how well they do the movie.
Mikayla
Oh, man. Who has it picked up? Who picked it up?
Reggie
I think it's Amazon, isn't it? No. It's gonna be in theaters.
Kennedy
I don't know. Beckett just better be hot.
Reggie
Yeah.
Mikayla
Okay, wait. Who did I picture as Beckett when I read it?
Reggie
I'm trying to remember. I pictured someone very specific.
Kennedy
I think I pictured the guy on the Longest Ride.
Reggie
Wait, I think that's who I pictured. It's so.
Mikayla
Yeah. Amazon. Mgm.
Reggie
Yeah, Amazon. Oh, yeah. I. Great book. Great book. We've talked about it a lot on the podcast, but it's just
Mikayla
I will never.
Reggie
I don't know. It's. Yeah. It's just really something.
Mikayla
So if you know, you know. And if you don't know, you will know.
Reggie
Yeah. I think if you're wanting a good cry, it's a great book to read. And if you're familiar with Rebecca's books, her. Her romance books are always some sort of military aspect to it. So I'm trying to remember how we decided to explain this book in one of our past episodes, but a single mom is writing letters to her brother's best friend while he is in the Navy. The military, the army. I know they're all different things, but something like that.
Kennedy
While he's out.
Reggie
He's out. While he's deployed.
Kennedy
Yeah.
Reggie
So Rip.
Mikayla
That's. Yeah.
Reggie
And if you're thinking, oh, it's like Dear John. Someone asked me that. They're like, is it like Dear John? I was like, no, I don't think
Kennedy
I've actually read or watched Dear John before.
Mikayla
It's been a long time for me.
Kennedy
Yeah.
Mikayla
But I can guarantee they're not the same.
Reggie
Not the same.
Kennedy
No.
Narrator
So.
Reggie
Yeah. Rebecca. Man.
Mikayla
Rebecca.
Kennedy
Okay, Carrie Soto is back.
Reggie
This is a tricky one, because I think I rated this, like, 2.5 stars. Two stars. And I love Taylor Jenkins Reid so much. I think I'm just not an athlete. And so I think that I would have liked it a lot better because it follows a tennis player. I think it would be a really cool movie. I think I'd enjoy a movie of it more. I just didn't love the book. I think I want. I said something about it just being so much about tennis and, like, I love tennis, and, like, I grew up playing tennis. I love watching tennis. I think I just wanted a little more from it. But then I think if I were to reread it, I would catch on things that I didn't catch the first time. I don't think I'll ever read it again, but.
Kennedy
Okay.
Reggie
I'm trying to think of all of Taylor Jenkins Reid books. I think that's my lowest rated of hers. Even under Malibu Rising?
Kennedy
I think
Reggie
so.
Kennedy
So. Wouldn't reread.
Mikayla
No.
Reggie
But I do think that I would recommend it to you, and I think
Mikayla
you would like it. Okay. You know what's funny is you rated the favorites very high, and I feel like they're the same book, different font.
Reggie
Really?
Kennedy
Yeah.
Mikayla
Kind of unlike the main character doing. Ever. Doing whatever it takes to succeed.
Reggie
Yeah. I just feel like there was a little bit more to the favorites that kept it interesting. Whereas like Carrie so's back felt like the same story, like the same thing, each chapter a little bit. And so that's what was hard for me.
Mikayla
Yeah. I do wonder if you read that, if that would be like your highest Taylor Jenkins Reid book. Michaela.
Kennedy
I've only read one.
Mikayla
I know.
Kennedy
Yeah.
Mikayla
Like out of all of her books, if that would be the one that I would recommend for you to read.
Kennedy
Okay.
Reggie
Yeah.
Kennedy
Okay.
Mikayla
Maybe if it's. If it doesn't have a long Libby hold. All right. Try listening to it. I wonder if listening to it would be really entertaining. I wonder if there's some sort of like, I don't know, the animal tennis ball.
Reggie
Kennedy's actually going to just do her own graphic audio.
Kennedy
She's just going to be right next to me.
Mikayla
I did not play tennis ball hitting.
Kennedy
I don't even know how you made that noise.
Reggie
Anyway.
Mikayla
Hilarious.
Reggie
That's hilarious.
Kennedy
No, I've always just been curious because I feel like you really love Taylor Jenkins reads.
Reggie
Yeah, I do.
Kennedy
I was just curious about like that book if you would reread it because
Mikayla
I feel like you would read a
Kennedy
lot of her other ones.
Reggie
But yeah, I really would.
Kennedy
Okay.
Reggie
But anyways, yeah, I'm gonna go with the Song of Achilles because you read this quite a while ago, a long time ago, and I want to say.
Mikayla
Here we go again. I'm getting a lot of hate on TikTok for this again. When we originally posted this, people were so mean to me.
Reggie
I'm doing it for the clickbait. Just kidding. But I'm curious like now if you were like, if you hadn't read it, what, like three years ago.
Mikayla
The funny thing is, is do I want to reread it? No. But I do think if I re reread it now, I would like it more than I did.
Reggie
That's what I was thinking.
Mikayla
But like, it's never crossed my mind to reread it. I think I just have a. More a better appreciation of like slow paced, beautiful, flowery writing than I did three years ago.
Reggie
Yeah.
Kennedy
Yeah.
Mikayla
But I'm not like jumping at the gun to pick it up again. And people hate me for that,
Kennedy
you know, I think it's okay.
Mikayla
So very tragic story. I remember really, really loving the ending, but I don't remember anything leading up to it.
Kennedy
So
Mikayla
please don't hate me. I'm sorry.
Reggie
Is. Has that been picked up? I want to say it has. I'm not sure because I keep seeing all these things about how the director of the movie has Been meeting with Connor Story.
Kennedy
Foreign, let's see.
Reggie
And I was like. But I didn't think he had been picked up.
Mikayla
It's option for adaptations.
Reggie
I don't know, maybe people are just making crap.
Mikayla
Yeah.
Reggie
I know he's met with some director
Mikayla
and everyone frequently speculate about casting with names like Connor Story and Hudson Williams. Well, why? Because they are. Yeah. In. Okay.
Reggie
I mean I wouldn't be mad about that but like they would work.
Mikayla
They would work.
Reggie
I mean their chemistry is off the charts.
Kennedy
Yeah.
Reggie
But also like I would like them to just be like. I wouldn't want to see them in anything else together in a role like that.
Kennedy
Well, I feel like you couldn't separate them.
Reggie
Yeah, exactly.
Kennedy
Each need their moment to like shine. Yeah.
Mikayla
I do think I would enjoy it as a movie more than I did as a book. I think it would be a very visually beautiful tear jerking movie. I just don't think the book was for me. Honestly if I read it now I probably would like it more. But I. I don't think I'll reread it. Too many books, so little time.
Reggie
I'm going to stitch the TikTok of you. Just kidding. I'm joking.
Kennedy
I'm joking.
Mikayla
It was really slow paced and everyone's like, that's the point. I'm like, okay, sorry.
Kennedy
It's a little paced.
Reggie
Everyone's entitled to their own opinion.
Kennedy
I'm sorry.
Mikayla
Now I could probably appreciate it. So all of you guys in the comments can now haha say told you so.
Reggie
I'm sorry to do that too.
Mikayla
It's okay.
Reggie
Anyways, all right, Michaela, I have to
Mikayla
pick one for you. Let's see. Let's go with the Invisible Life of Addie Larue. Ooh,
Kennedy
I feel like this is a really tricky one.
Mikayla
What did I rate it? 4 stars.
Kennedy
I'm pretty sure, I'm pretty sure I rated it.
Reggie
Four stars.
Kennedy
Um, I don't think I would reread it. Not because I dislike it, but I feel like it's so unique on its own that I remember so much for sure of it. I mean I'm sure I don't remember everything, but I just think it's a book where I'm like, I remember enough about it that I don't think I would reread it again. I don't know, I might change my mind in a few years, but I feel like it's fresh enough that I'm not like jump in to reread it.
Reggie
Yeah.
Mikayla
Because there really isn't anything like it. So it is very memorable.
Kennedy
Yeah. Yeah.
Mikayla
I also think that would be such a good TV series.
Kennedy
Yeah, I think so too. I think it's just a matter of time before some of these books just get picked up. Didn't V. E. Schwab say there was a script for Secret Life of Addie Larue?
Mikayla
I want to say she did.
Reggie
I want to say she did too.
Kennedy
I don't know if it's been officially announced. Maybe I shouldn't say that. But I remember saying there was a script getting written for one of her books. And. And I want to say it was Invisible Life.
Mikayla
Did you guys know there is a something on Netflix called First kill, released in 2022. It's a vampire series based on one of her short stories.
Reggie
Oh, I didn't know that.
Kennedy
I didn't know that either.
Mikayla
Shades of Magic has been picked up by Sony Pictures and production is in development.
Kennedy
Maybe it was Shades of Magic, but
Mikayla
sorry, here we go back to Invisible life of Addie LaRue. V. Schwab wrote a script. Oh, okay.
Reggie
Yeah.
Kennedy
Okay.
Mikayla
So there's a confirmed finish in late 2025.
Reggie
It would be a really cool project.
Mikayla
Is moving along.
Reggie
Yeah, that'd be a really cool movie.
Kennedy
So, yeah, we were. We're kind of besties with VE Schwab. Just kidding. But she did tell us that she just submitted a script once we talked to her.
Mikayla
Yeah, that's what it was. She's very cool.
Reggie
Yeah, cool. Sorry.
Mikayla
Now I'm going down a rabbit hole. You won't care about this. She said that she pictures Jamie Campbell Bower to play Victor from Vicious. Dang. I would die.
Kennedy
H. I think I need to reread
Reggie
those instead of listening to them. Yeah, I want to read them anyways. So many books. A little time.
Kennedy
That's it.
Reggie
I hope you guys enjoy it. This was kind of fun to be put on the spot and to just, like, look back at some books that meant a lot to us or just like, impacted the podcast.
