Yes. Marcella was apparently a masseuse at the I shit you not, The Circus Maximus Massage Parlor on Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood.
Host 2
Sounds like it's from a Thomas Pynchon book or whatever.
Host 1
It really does.
Host 2
Yeah.
Host 1
This is inherent vice ass shit right here. Yeah. And this is what Brian was doing at this moment in time. I'm gonna quote just a little bit more from David leaf. In those days, 1972, Brian had taken to frequenting massage parlors for human contact. And despite all that had transpired throughout the years, he still managed to get himself into funny situations, often unintentionally. Dean Torrence says that Brian has always been funny to me, visually. A walk or an expression. Sometimes I just look at him and crack up. He used to tell me seriously about something that would make me laugh. A massage parlor. He used to go to the Circus Maximus. He couldn't figure out why they treated him so poorly. Just because he was walking along in a hallway and tripped in a hole in the rug and. And fell into this room and scared the girl and whoever she was, quote, massaging. And they just kicked him out. He said all this with a real straight face. And I'm just dying.

You're telling me that he was walking around inside of the Circus Maximus Massage Parlor and he tripped in the carpet and with his. I don't even wanna know how much weight at that moment fell into a door, potentially breaking it off of his.
Host 1
Hinges like the Kool.
Guest
And they didn't like this. But he.
Host 1
Yes. And didn't like Brian Wilson just appearing in the little parlor where someone was getting whacked off.
Guest
Wow.
Host 1
Shocking.
Host 2
I know my favorite song so far on the record, though, I'm gonna be honest.
Host 1
This is one of my two favorite songs on the record. Absolutely. I think it's. It rips, It's a banger. It's fantastic.
Guest
I'm surprised it's not a Dennis song, or. I was initially surprised. I thought for sure this. This had Dennis vibes all over it.
Host 1
I see that. But Dennis could just, like, get anyone to fuck him. Like, you know, he had that much swag. So Marcella, like, Brian has to literally go to the massage part. Like, Brian doesn't have the pull that Dennis has. So.
Guest
Yeah. I gotta admit, I did not really read between the lines on the lyrics so much.
Host 2
It's so funny because there's nothing about the sound of it that seems in keeping with that origin. You know what it's like. It doesn't sound like it. Certainly. Maybe this is what seduction sounds like to Brian Wilson, but I mean, like. Or sort of like coming on to somebody. It sounds so. Just jaunty and like, you know, kind of. I don't know, rah rah. But I think it's kind of great, you know, and it's like once you hear it, it's impossible for it not to just linger in your head for days afterwards, you know, it's just so. Just so melodically insanely catchy. Catchy. And like, even the way, you know, they say Marcella, you know, it just has this kind of like. I don't know, it's very. It's a very funny. Again, I find this record very funny. Overall. I like laugh, but it's like not funny. I remember the first time I interviewed friend of the pod Jokerman stalwart Tim Heidecker. It was right after he'd sort of started putting out records under his own name and. And not really doing the character. And we talked a lot about how people don't like when things are funny and anything else. Right. Like they want a clear dividing line. Oh, no, no, this is funny. Don't worry, there's no heart in it. It's funny, you know, but when something sort of funny and touching or funny and sad or whatever, I mean, that's, to me, when you've got great art, you know, that's when you're really getting into something. But not to say that this song really is aspiring to do any of that, I don't. I'm sure Brian had almost. I'm sure he didn't care at this point. That's the sense I get. You know what I mean? Yeah. Put Marcel on it.
Guest
Yeah. For Brian, all that, like, he is kind of, I think, partly so beloved because he doesn't even have to ever. He would never have that conversation about, oh, well, I was trying to do something funny and beautiful. It's like, I think he just goes on pure instinct. It seems like he just can't help himself but make something that is beautiful. And if it's a little bit funny at the same time, intentionally or not, then that's just going to be part of the mix. It's like it's totally homogenized or blended together by his creative process.
Host 1
I think there's an innocence to this also that if this were a Dennis song, or, God forbid, a mic song, there would be this sort of, you know, desultory kind of sinister element of them writing this pion to a masseuse at the Circus Maximus. But Brian, like, honestly, you know, I think he's just thinking like Marcella. You really are so sweet.
Guest
Yeah. Music is in my soul.
Host 1
That's right, exactly.
