Welcome back to catching up with Katie. Today we're just kind of hanging out chatting about things to come. We got Stephanie here. This is the, I think third time we've been on a catching with Katie and I promised her that this time did not have to be a Stephanie Q A where we make her talk about herself the entire time. So you can just kind of vibe and interject if you wish. But we have lots of things coming up. We have horse shows, we have Matthew. So right before the intro to this, Matt bravely saved. What is happening?
B
I did get bit.
C
I think he got bit.
A
He bravely saved Stephanie from a spider that was over her head. Do you know what kind it was? Did you take a picture of it?
B
It certainly wasn't poison. It was just a little jumping spot.
D
How do you know it was a. It was a giant black spider.
B
It wasn't poisonous though.
A
How do you know?
B
Because I looked at it before I grabbed it.
A
But how do you have like a directory of poisonous spiders.
D
Yeah.
B
For locally around Tennessee.
D
What?
A
I don't.
B
In the Nolensville area.
A
You should give it a try.
B
Give one a try. I did. Oh, hold on.
A
You should see if a web comes out.
C
Oh buddy, that's looking not too good.
B
We'll see.
A
Or do you see like two little bang marks?
B
Yes.
C
Where'd they go?
B
We'll see how it goes. We'll see how it goes.
A
What did it? Was it black and have a red thing on the back of it?
B
No, no, no, no. Because if that's the case then we're not even worried about it because I won't make it to the hospital anyway.
A
Except for real.
C
I'm pretty sure I think you can live from a black widow. I think if you get there fast enough.
B
Can you look right after this segment,
A
can you look up the mortality rate of a black widow spider bite? Have you ever been bit by a spider?
B
I don't think so.
A
Like a, like a brown recluse.
B
You would know.
A
They eat at your skin.
B
Yeah, that, that's, that's a rough one.
C
Fatalities are virtually non existent since the 1980s. No confirmed deaths since the 80s.
B
Really?
C
Really.
A
Well, there's always a first. So we're going to, we're just going to move on. I would like to point out some of us work out in the heat for a living and we're outside all day just sweating and working hard. Been, you know, outside since 5:36am Others, does it look like they are affected by the heat? We're sticking with this.
B
I was Trying to think of something witty, but I couldn't in time.
A
Are we thinking. Are we just sticking with this bit?
B
Yes. Well, I like it because it's not a bit for me. It's more of a new chapter, new page. I'm just trying to. I. I want to be the guy that kind of, like, wears, you know, sports coats, places and stuff, and just, like, looks. Looks nice. And, you know, I was, like, looking nice.
A
I saw a video the other day, and it's so me. They're like, I want so bad to be mysterious, but, like, I just can't shut the hell up, you know? Like. Like, I want. I want to, like, change that in myself. And I want to be like, no one knows anything about me. I'm like, I'm mysterious, but, like, the things that come out of my mouth on a daily basis about just things that happen, like, everyone knows everything, and I. I just wish I would shut up sometimes.
B
Yeah.
C
I just hopped on what I'm calling the bandwagon of betterment.
D
Oh.
C
I feel like I'm just bettering myself a little bit by a little bit. I got a lot to work on.
B
Square one.
A
Are you gonna think about that later?
C
Yeah.
A
You're red.
C
Cut the camera.
A
Also, I did see quite a few comments and. Hold on. Oh, I saw a lot of comments asking. They're like, why does she have a can in her mug? Oh, my gosh. I bet it's for copyright reasons. I was just being silly.
B
Yeah. It's a new merch product. We're working on a bad idea.
A
It's. It's basically because we got koozies coming out, like, in a week.
C
Not a bad idea.
A
We had them last year. They sold out really fast. But, yeah, we have a lot going on. It's freaking hot, and we're working, and we've been getting up and riding early, which I've very much enjoyed. I mean, you. You get up and ride early every day. I started getting up and riding early.
D
It's nice, though.
A
It is.
D
It's always beautiful.
A
That makes me feel very accomplished and, like, I've already gotten so much done by the time that I would normally start work, so. Been riding every morning, and we've brought another horse into the rotation, which is Ricky. And so Ricky. I mean, I don't feel like. I mean, she had a baby this year, but I don't feel like y' all even know her.
C
No Mr.
A
Babies, just her baby. Baby Rando Ricky. I rode her a couple times, and then you rode her today, and she Looked really good today. We're just kind of doing what we did with Kennedy. And if I'm just a firm believer that the more you use it, the longer you have it. And so, yeah, with the brood mares that are able, like, they don't have an injury that prevents them, I'm like, if they're not having babies, why not have them a little fitter? It doesn't mean we're going to take them to shows. I mean, if she looks really good and sound, I mean, maybe she's broke
D
and she looks sound and I think she's happy to work.
A
So we are going to have. Because we were already with any of our horses that we ride, like, and we're trying to, like, get ready for big shows and stuff, we do, like, regular routine kind of checks on them with the vet and make sure they're staying sound because horses are stoic. And so sometimes even if they don't look, sound like they might have something bothering them. And so we said the next time that the vet's out for that, which is soon, we were just going to do, like, an overall check. But she looks great. And so that brought me to an idea. Why do you have your face like that?
B
Just contorted from the other episode just a second ago?
C
I just. I like new ideas.
A
Because now, you know, you've written. You've both ridden Ethel.
C
Yeah.
A
No one's necessarily written Kennedy, but I feel like she's back in the swing of things where, like, she. She could tote somebody around. Maybe if she's tired enough, she's like, no, but Ricky, I think she did have a little bit of a hissy fit yesterday, but that was because I was asking, like, 100% from her. If you let her just do what she wants, she's, I think, super easy. It came to my. My brain that we now have three broke horses that are kind ish and they know how to do the Western pleasure. And I think, I think we could maybe put on, like, a, like a
B
little horse show in the new arena.
A
In the new arena.
B
Because now that's big enough.
A
It's big enough. It's beautiful. The scenery is gorgeous. It has, like, space where we could put up some, like, obviously not to the public, but, like, friends and family.
D
No.
B
Get your bids.
A
No, we. It would not be to the public.
C
We're having a horse show.
A
But what if we did a horse show? And I thought about this for a little bit because I thought I'd pitch it to you today and you don't know about this yet? Because I'm also intertwining you. But so yeah, Rachel's not here, but my coach, she'll be everyone's coach.
C
Still win in my book.
A
We'll get to that. So Rachel would also be in on this as a participant because I have three horses. So you two plus Rachel.
C
Now, she's pretty experienced.
B
I believe she's got through off a horse.
A
Yeah, she's broken.
B
She clearly don't know how to ride one.
A
Yeah, she's a handicap.
C
She's obviously not good at this.
B
I've never to start off a horse
C
is all I can say.
A
So my thought process was we maybe have like a challenge where you each get lessons with Stephanie. Again, I'm volunteering you for this sins because in my head it would be really cool if we did a horse show. Because I mean, when we go to horse shows, for me there's multiple classes. Right. So what if it was like a, like kind of like the versatility, like how Denver did it where it's like western pleasure, a pattern and then like halter or something like that. Because I, I thought about showmanship, but I don't think any of them know showmanship.
C
But we could crash course. We didn't know how to rope.
B
I think it should be a bonus class. And if you can figure it out and you're.
C
Well, we didn't know how to rope in Texas and we got a crash course.
A
I don't, I don't think you. It would be the best video if we did a crash course though. That's why I think, yeah, you need lessons.
B
We'll keep it like a saga, but
A
like, okay, maybe like the bare minimum
D
of showmanship, like a very basic showmanship.
A
So what if it was like a halter hybrid?
D
We could do that.
A
So it was more like a showmanship. How they do like sheep, where it's like you're showing your horse off. So it's based off of like. Did you set your horse up for the judge?
D
Yes.
A
Did you hold her head up? Did you get her ears up? Did you know? More like that.
D
Okay. Yeah, that makes more sense because, because me thinking halter, I'm like, well, somebody's just going to lose.
A
But with horses or with like people that have never done this with horses, it's like, what if they park them out really bad? Or like that that would be against them, you know? Yeah, like, true. It's more based on in my head how they present the horse for the halter class rather than the horse's Confirmation.
B
Who's judging this?
D
He sold me.
A
So that's the part I don't know.
B
I mean, I wouldn't say Stephanie is necessarily biased, but I mean, she's a trainer.
D
I couldn't be the. If I was coaching. I couldn't.
A
I think, I think we have to keep her totally biased, right? Or not. Not biased.
C
Unbiased.
A
Unbiased. Completely unbiased. And I feel like it would if we were gonna. Somebody in, if we were gonna do it. I almost thought about, like, if we could try to hire an actual judge and get their, like, reasoning or like a trainer, at least that I, I did think about Taft because, like, he, he was so good on camera. He likes to put up a fight and be like, what did you get me into? And then he sits down and is like so good with his words and charismatic.
B
Comfortable.
A
Yes. Yeah. And I think, I think we could convince him personally, especially since Ricky's one of the horses.
D
But also I feel like he's gonna be very critical. Well, he's got a favorite. He's got a favorite.
A
He does have a favorite horse or person. Horse.
B
I was like, who is it?
A
Dang. That's true.
D
Ricky will just win everything.
A
I didn't think about that. I mean, I think she has a good chance of being like the horse you'd want to draw.
D
Oh, yeah.
B
It's all about the writer.
A
But anyway. Okay, okay, we'll brainstorm. We'll keep thinking about the judge. Because I do think. I think I need to be the, like, MC slot. I don't. I can't judge you.
B
No.
C
Yeah, no, you can't.
A
Because I would, I would definitely, I think let personal things get in the way. Like, I don't want Nate to win.
C
She would let that get in the way.
A
I. I think we need an off site judge that has.
D
But can we.
C
Can we do.
D
Thinking of like a real horse show? So I'm thinking of like, you know, actual pleasure. Like not making it more like a based on the rider thing. Tess could do that. He's, you know, he could do that.
C
Let's.
D
Well, I have fun with that.
C
Will there be three judges?
A
Oh, that's a good point. Like how the versatility, they isolate them so that they don't know and they place it like in the class because then, like, they're isolated so they can't sway it to make someone win. You know, like they just.
C
Three judges.
A
Oh, that's a good idea.
C
And another curveball could be really fun because, you know, we don't really Know what we're doing. What if one of the judges has no idea what they're doing? Like, it's. It's a random. Like, we could find someone who knows. Like, you could say, what is. What is that? What is this? No, no, no, no. What is this called? On a horse. And they'd say a foot. Yeah, that's called a hoof.
B
That's the guy we want.
C
We just find.
D
Charles would have Good.
A
My whole shtick is I try to make other. Like, I try to do fun things and also make it educational.
B
That's true. That's true.
C
The wild cards.
A
So what if we did, like, okay, y'. All. Y' all would eat this up. What if the wild card judge was costume?
C
Like, you don't know who it is?
A
No, like, when I was a kid, like, in poa, like, Ponies of America's, like, they have costume class. You dress you and your horse up as a costume and you have like a little one minute monologue.
C
I'm in.
B
Yeah.
A
Rachel's gonna die. She's gonna be like, you sold me a monologue.
C
I'm gonna start writing.
A
So, like, when I was a kid, I had lots of costumes, but my favorite one was a costume. Like, I'm talking full body costume on
B
the horse Halloween costume.
A
I was. I was a Barbie fairy, and my horse was a unicorn and she had fairy wings and like this, like, we had a whole body sleazy on her that was sparkles and was like. Yeah. And I was Barbie. The. I was a fairy Barbie. And so I was like, hi, I'm Barbara. I'm Barbie, AKA Barbara Millicent Roberts, like, did the whole thing. Okay. I was way too old to be doing it.
D
Like, you, like, had a speech.
A
I had, like, a one minute monologue. Yeah.
B
Dude, forget everything else.
A
POA made us speak.
B
Why don't we do that?
D
Now in my head, I'm thinking, like, oh, like freestyle raining or something like that, where you're just going out there in costume. Just.
A
It would just be costume. Like, I already know you're going to be like Daenerys on a dragon.
B
I've literally have. Like, yeah, that would be fun. Yeah. Yeah, that's really. What a great idea.
A
Wild card judge.
B
And it's.
A
It's like a 5% bonus. It's not a big one. You know, it's. Yeah, it's like the tiebreaker. Yeah. And so, like, I remember with. So at the AQHA Youth World, you did.
D
I don't know.
A
Do you know if they still do the Freestyle equitation and freestyle horsemanship.
D
I don't know. I don't think so.
A
So back in the day, they used to do freestyle equitation where you made your own pattern.
C
You.
A
You had three minutes. You had a. Or two and a half minutes, something like that. You had music that you could bring in, and you did a costume. And so my horse and I, Calvin, I will go get a picture of this. I will find a picture of this to show you.
D
Do you have video evidence?
A
I'm sure somewhere I don't have it on my phone. Ready to go find that. But my horse Calvin had, like, the best lead changes ever and was, like, just so broke. And it was my last youth world, so I dressed up like a biker chick. I had on tattoo sleeves, a leather vest like a flaming do rag. I wore black pants, my black tall boots, because it was equitation. So it was English. And so he had on a full body black slinky that we. My mom hand painted a horse skeleton with flames on it.
C
That's cool.
A
And we. We did it to Wanted Dead or Alive by Bon Jovi. But my friend's husband, who knew how to do whatever stuff, he put, like, motorcycle revving, like, within it. And so he was. Calvin was really good at spinning. He was really good at lead changes. And he was broke. So we did Bridalists. Oh, my gosh. So he had no bridal on for the entire thing. We did a bunch of spins and, like, bunch of tempe lead changes and all this stuff. I was so mad. And the girl. The girl who won. I was second. The girl who won was great.
D
Okay.
A
But it was that she jumped in it.
B
I'll do it.
A
That.
C
Yeah, you're winning if you jump.
A
So she had just won, like, the equitation over fences.
C
Yeah.
A
And like. Like, actually the equitation over fences. And so she dressed up as a minion.
B
I mean. Yeah.
A
Was she a minion?
C
Yeah.
D
My vote.
A
No, I think the minion was a whole different thing, actually. She. I don't know what it is, but she had people come in there with her, and they had a log, and they just ran around the arena holding the log in different shots and at different heights, and she kept jumping.
C
Yeah. That's really cool. That's really cool.
A
Anyway, I thought I was still good.
B
Well, I feel like now you're just like. Well, you're the first of all. The other people who didn't have a literal jumping horse, probably.
C
Yeah, no, you got second. So you were.
A
Yeah. Anyway, it was very Fun. And so I'm not saying that's what y' all would do. You would just do a costume.
B
Well, I would need to know. I would need to know. What are we thinking?
C
Like.
B
Okay, like, let's just spitball in here. Whenever we say, like, conception of what are we drawing names.
C
Are we.
A
Okay. Okay. So my. Okay, you're not gonna like this, because I've also thought about this.
B
Yeah.
A
So based on Rachel, Nate, and Matt and the rioting experience that you all three have and me knowing the three horses that are available, I think it should be a drawing.
C
Okay.
A
But I personally believe we should take Kennedy's name out for when you draw. I think you draw first.
B
I think decides. And here's why I think that is. Because what I know is, in my heart of hearts, will happen is that all these quirks that Kennedy has, the way that she sneezes, the way that she throws her head, the way that she doesn't like to walk for extended period, pay attention. She's still a champion. And it comes down to the writer. And I think that she has yet to find a writer that she just really can connect with. And I might be it. Might be it. So I, you know, comma, could be a little too rowdy. Could be a dragon. Little too rowdy for me. But, you know, I think it should be something that fate decides rather than the system.
A
So if he does draw Kennedy, you have to give him a safety button
B
of some sort or safety word. Pineapple. Pineapple. Pineapple.
D
Abort mission.
B
Arms up. Tilt.
A
Watch her be like. Like the best of the three. So I. Okay, if we decide that's the way we go, we have something y' all just draw out of. So we would do it kind of how we did, like, the Christmas thing where y' all draw for how. What order you pick.
C
Yeah.
A
And then you draw. And I think we do a pleasure class horsemanship pattern. And then, like, we said halter, but it's more based on how you show the horse versus, like, the horse's confirmation.
C
Yeah.
A
And then it's like a cumulative score as to who wins. So, like, the versatility at the world show, I think it's like, 40. 40. 20. Something like that. Like 40 for the pleasure, 40 for the pattern, 20 for the halter. Kind of feel like that's.
D
That's. That's the vibe.
B
15 and then 5%.
A
Yeah, yeah, maybe 5. 15 and then 5% for the costume.
B
Dude, I'm so excited about. I'm not letting that die.
A
But, like. Like, yeah, like, it's like, all. Like, y' all have to do it.
C
Yeah.
A
You have to make it handmade. Like, well, that's.
B
And then, like, I mean, I'm really. That's what.
A
But, like, you can. You can buy a slinky. You can buy a whatever. But, like, yeah, you know, Well, I
B
need to know how much, like, time.
A
You can't commission somebody to make you.
B
No, no, no, no. I would never. I would never.
C
I'm gonna AI mine.
B
Yeah. 3D print. But what. What. What's the time frame from drawing a horse from the hat to the show day?
A
So I haven't even thought about that because I think. Okay, in your professional opinion. So Nate's. Nate's written, ridden. How many times do you think in the last two years of. Of, like, those types of horses? But he took a few lessons on, like, just walk, trot, like, like, point and go.
C
I've been on. I probably rode near my house.
A
Four times, and then, like, he.
C
And then I've hopped on probably three other times, so probably seven times.
A
Like, the day that we rode ropers last year, Like, I mean, you picked it up pretty quick.
C
Yeah. Yeah, I've.
B
I.
A
Pretty quick.
B
I've never, like.
C
I've never, like, had a lesson. I've had one lesson on going and turning, but. And stopping, but I've never, like, had a lesson.
A
Rachel is definitely at an advantage.
D
Yes.
A
In this situation.
B
What's her. What's her history?
A
She showed.
B
She did as a. As a youth kid, so she's had some time, though.
C
Yeah, she's the favorite, though.
A
I would say she's definitely going into it. Like, if we were betting, I. I would be betting on.
C
Rods are strong in Rachel's favor.
A
But also, I think it depends on the draw. I think it depends on, like, if she draws Kennedy and Kennedy decides to be real touchy that day or whatever. If she draws Ricky, you're screwed.
B
I also want to throw in the whole Kennedy monologue was just BS And I really will trust Katie's judgment. If she doesn't think that I can do that, then I'll probably.
A
I honest. If you did. Okay, here's my thing. If you did draw Kennedy, we reserve one lesson to assess.
B
Yeah.
A
We agree. We will do one lesson and assess, and if not, we will all redraw and we will take Kennedy out for you.
B
Circling back a week, two weeks from drawing.
A
Okay. So I'm envisioning, timeline wise, like, doing this somewhere when it's not too cold, but it's not blazing hot outside.
C
April 23rd.
A
But I also don't want to be, like, before doing. No, I don't want to really be having Kennedy get riled up.
D
Oh, yeah, yeah.
A
Like right before Congress. So I'm thinking, like, right after Congress. So like the. So after the last week or the first week of November, like the first week of November, it doesn't get too. Too cold here. Yeah, by then, I mean, it's. It's cold some days. We could try to watch.
B
It's still pretty warm.
A
We could watch the weather. And so I'm thinking right after Congress. And as. As a professional, if you're giving them, like, a Western pleasure lesson, a pattern lesson, and a halter lesson, I think they should just get one each. Do you think?
D
I. So here's the thing. Is this going to be walk trot? Oh, no, we're walk trot.
B
Oh, we're loping your reputation.
D
My reputation.
B
Your reputation's on the line too, I see.
A
Yeah. What if they suck? That just means you suck as a trainer.
D
I need a year, then.
B
A year worth Loki, though, would be cool to be like the solid year. But you get one. Well, I feel like you could do
D
like, one lesson for, like, the halter portion.
A
That's what I'm saying.
D
And then like, maybe a couple for the writing.
B
Let me ask you this. Is it something. Let's just say you said November. Let's just say we do this in November. Is it something that we establish the drawing of the horse, like, now and then over the course? Like, well, you know. Yeah, it's like maybe like once a month. A month or something.
A
Like, so it's kind of like that.
B
So it's not like a. Right before piling it in right before the show. And then, like, you have to.
A
Maybe we should do that. Maybe we should go ahead and just
C
maybe start and it's the series.
A
Do we call Rachel up here right now? Do we draw horses right now?
C
We draw right now. Yeah, call her.
B
I'll call her. Oh, four or RH Trucking. I almost said her number, which I don't have memorized.
C
It was just old 983. Yeah,
B
I may. Shouldn't put on speaker. Yeah, put on speaker with our current relationship status.
C
Hello?
D
Hey.
B
What are you doing right now?
A
I'm at the barn.
D
What do you need?
B
Do you think you could make your way to the podcast room for a brief moment?
A
Absolutely.
B
Thanks so much.
C
Yeah.
B
Talk about somebody who knew they were on camera.
C
Well, absolutely.
B
I guess, like, we're scheduling that way
A
it's not like, if we go ahead and draw now. We're committing.
C
We're committing.
B
Yeah, we're committing, which we are known to not.
A
So I think. I think if we could make it a series where we do like, hey, here's everyone's Western pleasure lessons. One video. Yeah, here's everyone's horsemanship lessons. What are, like, then it's. Then it's a journey. And then I think it would be fun. Here's. Here's the thing, though, that I've also thought of. So I would like to be, like, my part in this horse show and in the video, I would like to be the commentator. I would like to be the person up on the. Whatever this goes.
C
Walk.
A
Walk your horses. Yeah, Trot, trotter horses calling out the. The winners. You know, things like that. But also in between, I would like to be like, back here commentating, being like, being like, yeah, they were having issues with that in the warm up, you know, like, I want to be that person, but I need someone to have repertoire with. And I feel like you'd be the person to talk about with because you're like, hey, in pa. In practice, you know, they got this. Let's see if they get it here. But at the same time, how are
D
they going to get in the pen? You know what I mean?
A
That's what I'm saying. Like, you would need to be on the ground. Do we have a grounds person that we could trust to, like, get them in the ring or.
D
I feel like this, for me would be like, comparable to, like having like a small fry show, which gives a lot of anxiety to me. It'll give me the same vibe. So I have it once I know
A
I have to be there.
C
I'll go ahead and tell you that if we go through this thing and then it's time to go into the ring and Stephanie is not beside me for me to go. I feel like I'm gonna. I don't know what I'm doing on the horse. And she goes, you know what? You're okay. Yeah, that'll take.
B
That'll take me miles.
C
I think I need my trainer right beside me as I go in. I think I'll feel like a lost dog or something being like.
A
But like, I just. I feel like I can't just be up there by myself. I have to have.
C
Yeah.
A
And like, here's the thing about your dad.
C
I don't know.
A
Rebecca, Rebecca, she was literally everybody else.
B
She is the perfect.
A
Do you think she would comment? I don't know if she Would, like, commentate it.
B
Yeah, she was. She would commentate to you. Like, you would be, like, conversing.
A
She's too nice. Here's the thing. Because she'd be like, that was good. Well, you need to have yin and
B
yang, because you're not gonna be doing, like.
D
No, no, no.
B
He did.
A
He did good. And she'd be too nice. Like, I could maybe be like, you gotta be real.
B
Yeah, I know. She can be your devil's app, or you can be her devil's advocate.
C
I feel like we also need even an extra person on top of that who's more like the. The reporter in the field who you cut to for just, like, 10, 15 seconds, like you just finished your run or something, and, like, you're kind of
A
trotting out, oh, I should have said, we gotta have some pieces of paper. We're drawing horses.
B
Yeah, I know.
C
Yeah. So, like, you come trotting out after your run. It's like. And now a word from so and so.
B
How do you think you did with what we said on the last one on the Twitch with, like, a DJI on the Twitch or something like that?
A
Yeah. No, we need, like, a real reporter microphone.
C
Yeah. Like, back to you.
A
Oh, my gosh.
C
Who.
A
We got to get some people.
B
Let's get real for a moment.
C
The reporter needs to be really animated.
B
If we can get real just for a moment, let's talk about the prize.
D
Yeah.
C
What is the winner?
A
I've not thought about that.
B
I have. Don't worry.
C
I've been thinking the last 20 minutes.
B
I think whoever wins this thing ought to be able to show in your name at the next world show. Well, representing Katie Van Sly.
A
Work like that. So Rachel did ride Ricky yesterday.
B
Ricky, as in one of the ones that's on here?
A
Yeah.
B
She's getting pressed. So how many lessons does freaking Rachel get?
C
She's gonna get a ton. She's here every single day.
B
Yeah, no, that's. That's food for thought. Yeah, that's food for thought.
C
That is food for thought. She's one. She's.
B
So we get to take whoever we draw home.
C
We get to practice at home, and
B
we get a little bit of R R and stuff.
C
Yeah.
A
To bond.
B
Yeah.
C
I need bonding time.
A
So Rachel, we added a class. So it's western. Pleasure is 40%. Pattern is 40%. Halter is 15. 5%. Costume.
C
She loves it.
A
You have to, like, like, full. Like, Like.
C
Yeah, she'd have a costume.
A
I have chaps. I have a hat. There's no chaps in Costume class. Oh, oh, costume class.
C
Costume dressing up.
A
I think that's terrible. What did I say? She was gonna hate it.
C
Okay, you have to dress up like a princess.
A
Okay, so don't open it yet. Don't open it yet.
C
No, I was just waiting my turn in anticipation.
A
There's only one left. Oh, okay. This is just the order of which you.
D
You get to draw.
A
Draw.
C
Okay.
B
2, 1, 3, 2, 1.
C
So I don't even get to draw?
B
Bummer. I get what's left.
A
Oh, I got sweaty hands.
C
Who's won?
B
Who did the first draw?
A
Okay. No one open theirs until everyone's drawn.
C
Okay. Okay.
A
Or yeah, yeah. Because we don't wanna.
C
I'm nervous.
D
I am also nervous.
C
I'm sitting at a cool 115 right now. Over here.
A
Dude, it's the last one.
C
Oh, I touched your hand.
B
Sorry.
A
Okay. Three, two.
D
Hold on.
A
Actually, actually. Actually, I want to do it one at a time.
C
Okay? We'll go in order.
A
Rachel,
C
you already know.
A
I already saw. She got Ricky. I'm gonna dominate.
C
Who'd you get?
B
That can only mean that I got the best or the worst for me.
D
Kenneth.
C
Hey, look at Ethel.
A
Honestly, Kenneth, I think this is how it. I think this is how it should.
B
This is how it was going to be rigged.
C
Now, you said if she gets Ricky, it's no competition.
A
I don't think there was really a competition. Anyway, I. I have to say, I've been riding horses my whole life.
C
Yes. And. And Ricky, yesterday, I didn't say I wrote them.
A
Well, I will say you are now banned from her. Unless you are doing. That's fair.
C
Okay, here we go. Let's do it, Kenneth. Okay, me and Kinky.
A
We now have a.
B
You're excused.
A
Thank you, Rachel.
C
All right. Thank you.
D
So
B
thank you, Rachel. Now we thank you, Rachel. Committed. And now it's set in stone.
A
It's committed now.
C
Good luck. I wish you the best.
D
Happening.
A
Like. Like, I did it one time where I was like a fairy and my horse was a unicorn. Like some people. Like, I saw one guy that was a fisherman, and he made his horse the boat.
C
So you could be a horse and make your horse a person.
B
That would be horrible.
C
You could be a horse and make your horse. It's like a fly mask. It looks like a person.
B
Yeah.
C
That's so funny.
A
What's the percentage? 5%. No. You have to fully commit or you're disqualified. I'm gonna commit. I just know.
D
New rule, new rules.
A
They will commit way harder. That's fine, but you should still Commit and be a fun person. I, I will.
C
I'm gonna beat her.
A
Get creative.
C
I'm gonna beat her. Cuz she feels like she doesn't need that 5%.
A
No, no, no, no, no.
C
And I'm gonna beat her.
A
Now, should we make it like Halter's 10% and costumes? 10%.
B
I'm putting so much effort into my costume.
D
The percentage away from the, the costume and the halter, though, I feel like you got to keep that.
A
So should we do, like. What do you mean?
D
I, I. You said what, 15 for halter.
A
Yeah.
D
And then five. Maybe you do like 15 and 10.
A
Well, no, because. Okay, then where else do I take the percentage from the writing? You think. You think I should take a little bit away from the writing?
D
I would take a little away from the writing.
C
What if you take five points from
B
each riding to make it a little more fair?
C
15% for costume.
B
Yeah, because now it's like, so it's
A
35, 35, 10 or 15? 15.
C
35, 35, 15, 15.
B
No, that's only 90.
C
No, we're missing a class.
D
Just 5% that does.
C
What was it? 40, 40, 20.
A
Yeah, yeah.
C
35. 35.
A
Do math.
C
No, now it works.
A
My head.
C
That works. 35, 35, 15. 15.
A
Yeah.
C
35, 35. 70. 15, 15, 30. 70 and 30 is 100.
A
Okay, you're just spitting right then.
C
Okay, I trust you.
B
Thank you, Rachel.
C
Thank you, Rachel.
A
All right.
B
But now I'm so excited because that
A
prizes, that's not happening. I do, I do think we need, like, a physical prize of sorts.
B
Yeah.
A
Do we?
B
Ribbons are not.
A
No, not cool. Well, if we're gonna do it.
B
Yeah, Ribbons.
A
We should do, like, a neck ribbon.
D
Yeah. I feel like we have, like, the bronze.
B
It's a regular horse trophy.
A
Because let me tell you something.
B
Over, like, the Christmas special, this win would. Would last me a long time. Like, I would have. That would hold this win to heart because it's just more. It's just a lot cooler to me than the Christmas special.
A
So my thought process is, you don't.
B
There's no need for side eye. There's no need for side comments. This is all.
A
Look, what if we did something for all three participants, but there is one, like, winner.
C
I want this.
A
Hear me out.
C
I want this.
A
We do the actual, like, I want a buckle trophy for the overall. That's what I was gonna do.
C
I was hoping you were going that direction, because that's.
B
I want one.
A
So I was saying because, I mean, y' all go to horse shows.
C
Yeah.
A
And y', all. I don't know what we call it.
B
Is that still. Is that the same as Stolen Valor?
A
No, no, no.
B
Where'd you get your horse? Oh, the KBS Horse Show.
A
We're not gonna call. Do we call it, like, the Running Springs something or, like, the rs?
B
We can come up with something cool.
C
Do you do, like, what are. What are already ones? Nsba?
A
Rsba?
C
Rsba? What's the BA Breeders association?
A
Rsba.
C
The RSBA World Show.
A
Because RSBA National. I don't know. RSBA Versatility Challenge.
D
Yeah.
C
Yeah, There we go.
B
RSBA has a nice ring to it.
A
Okay, so I was thinking, y' all go to horse shows, having a nice belt buckle.
B
Yeah, I agree.
A
Is important. And you already have the hats. So, like, what if we did, like, a big old bronze? Do we do a traveling trophy?
D
That might be a good idea for, like, the overall winner.
A
You think like. Like a big marble thing that has,
C
like, multiple things on it, the name plates on it.
D
I'm gonna do it every year forever.
C
It's a real horse show now.
B
Yeah. It will only grow. Only this thing's about to be, like,
C
the NSBA World show had to have its first one.
B
Yeah.
C
And probably nowhere near as many people.
B
Something just like this. A bunch of guys around a table, just talking, throwing some ideas out, and then now look where it is.
C
They probably said there's a congress, but there's no nsba. Let's do one of those.
B
Look at the Roan World show and. And how big that is. New.
A
Well, we should call it something else than RSBA then.
B
But anyway, I do agree.
A
I. I don't hate calling it a versatility challenge.
D
Yes.
A
I don't hate that. Like the Running Springs Versatility Challenge.
C
Yeah.
A
So I think maybe we do, like, a big marble, like. Like, the. The bottom of its marble, and then, like, a bronze on top.
D
Yep.
A
I need to look at how much these things cost before I make promises. But, like, you know how they have them. Maybe it's wooden. How they have them, where there's, like, the. Like, multiple plaques.
D
Yes.
A
I think, like a traveling trophy of sorts. And then everyone gets, like, a. Or for first through third place.
C
Yeah. Top three. What does it say on.
D
The coaches get an award for, like, every class. Are you gonna do that now?
B
We're getting. But what the winner is is an accumulation. Right?
A
The winner is the accumulation.
B
So it needs to just be one winner.
A
So.
D
But what about the winner of each class?
A
Yeah. Because we're gonna place each class, and then the points you get from that. It, like, gets.
D
Technically, you could win one of the classes.
A
So, like Denver, when he was in the versatility challenge, he won two out of the three events.
C
Yeah.
A
So he got two neck ribbons. He got.
B
Oh, I didn't know that was a thing.
A
Yeah, yeah. Like, maybe we just do like. Like a neck ribbon per event. And then like,
B
imagine Ethel posted up. There was like three neck ribbons and a bronze statue and just like. And me.
A
I don't. I don't know. Maybe. What. What do you think should be the prize for, like. I'd like to hear some ideas, because we're open ideas. This is all. This is all new. This is all something that we're throwing together. Are you gonna, like, invite your families?
B
Yeah.
C
Can we?
A
Yeah.
B
Then, yeah.
C
I don't know. It's a horse show.
A
We could have some, like. Because, like, we have that little spot now that you can look over. We can put like, some.
C
A grandstand, like a makeshift.
A
Little bleachers.
B
Well, if I had my family and all my friends, then that would be four people. Yeah. You all hear it? So put me down for two. Yeah, yeah. That'd be sick. I mean, a lot more pressure.
A
Oh, yeah, I know.
B
Like. Like, just imagine.
A
Could you imagine a third and all three?
C
Yeah.
B
I can't imagine that. I feel like that's what you're saying. Imagine it.
A
No. I bet you'll slay costume.
B
I am. That's going to be the only. It's just like the Christmas special. I only always have one that I just kill at. And then Nate wins everything else. But now it's Rachel or Katie.
C
Now it's Rachel.
A
I. I think how this goes. What order do we do them in? Pleasure first, I think.
C
Pleasure last.
D
No, first.
B
Oh, we're doing last, right?
A
Do we do halter first just for the grooming aspect?
B
Is this all one day?
C
I feel like pleasure's the main event, though, Right.
B
So you have to, like, show your three classes and then go assemble your horse with costume and garb and whatnot.
A
Costume would be last, right?
D
Yeah.
A
Or do we want, like, the wind pictures to be in costume?
D
We can't always change.
B
The wind pictures would also be there.
A
Or do we do cost? Is costume like the first thing we do and then be like, okay, that was fun. Now time for the real horse show, like, you know what I'm saying?
B
Also something that could be considered, you know?
A
I don't know. Yeah, this could be an all day thing, Obviously.
B
I feel like with that at least there's no. There's no rush to throw something on.
A
Like, we don't. We don't start this at 3pm Right? Like this. We dedicate. This is the horse show day. Like, this is.
D
This is a.
A
This is a thing.
B
We all come down here, have a little biscuit and egg situation, everybody.
A
I do think behind the scenes should be like, obviously under your supervision. But I think for halter, they groom their own horses.
D
Oh, that should be part of it.
B
Yeah.
C
Okay.
A
I think they should groom their own horses. They should put the hoof black on. They should put their tail in. They should like part of the halter.
D
It gives me anxiety.
A
Part of the. I mean, you can go through part of. Part of the judging. May the judge who judges halter watches them groom.
D
Exactly.
B
And you can just be like, if you say this is about to be a catastrophic failure, you can just like place a soft hand on our shoulders.
D
I mean, I'm sure it wouldn't be a catastrophe. Just give me the.
A
I think, I think part of like the halter lesson that they have is like grooming, like, grooming and how to set them up. You know, I like that. So maybe. And all this has to be filmed now. Like, all the lessons have to be filmed. This all has to be. It's got to be like a costume first. So if we did costume first and then we just all take off, maybe go just. Just for the sake of grooming, they're not being sweat marks and like all the things we do halter and then it'll give like horses like Kennedy time to like woosa come down from having a costume. Something on her head.
B
That's going to be a tough one for you, figuring out the costume situation.
C
Yeah, I think I'm just gonna.
A
Right off the bat, what are some ideas crossing your heads?
B
So I really skilled with EVA foam and I think there were some people that followed me on Facebook that commented on like the last plague doctor mess that I did. So immediately my mind goes there and I have all kinds of sculpting tools and stuff like that. So probably some sort of either plated armor or like a fish scales or like something like that.
A
Did I ever tell you that's not
B
heavy on her or the horse because it's just foam, but it looks real.
A
Did I ever tell you that as a kid we had in social studies class, we had like a video project and this was back when you had to do it on like a camcorder. And, you know, and so we had a video project and I did a video project on Jousting. And so me and another girl pro, like, did this project together on my little poa pony, who was 25 years old at the time. And we did cardboard cutout armor that we did, like, gilded spray paint.
C
Yeah.
A
And we made our own armor. And we did, like, a on. On the ground sword fight. We jousted, but we did the same pony. So my mom would get angles from, like, one of us coming from this
C
way and then one of us coming
A
from the other way, and then we'd from the ground hit each other and be like, that's so good. And we also dressed up as the women in the crowd on the sidelines. And so then we were in.
B
Like, that would be funny now.
C
Why are we not doing this?
B
Yeah, that would be funny right now if he did that.
A
We were in, like. Like, renaissance Y dresses on the sidelines, and we'd be like, yeah, I would.
B
I was. That would be so funny if you did that.
A
I was like, 11.
C
Can we.
B
Is that what you do? Well, that was. Was that YouTube time?
A
Because Vimeo time.
B
Vimeo.
C
Let's.
B
That's password.
C
Let's do that.
B
Recreate.
C
Let's just make another one.
B
Let's recreate it.
D
I. I think you kind of should, dude. Yes. That's a perfect horse for that, too.
B
Yeah. And I know that's why I was
A
hoping I would need to find that tape for it to make sense.
C
Yeah.
B
Let's just throw it. Let's just see what happens. Let's just throw it out there. Like a usual.
C
I feel like we make this little movie, and then your tape plays in, like, the ending credits. That's like, the credit scene is, like, the home videos from when they were younger after the movie.
A
Because, like. Like, I don't know why I always saddled myself with, like, the most ornate, elaborate projects.
C
Yeah.
A
Like, we did a. We did another video project. I don't know why. I was like, mom, edit this for me.
B
Who knew how to do that?
C
You know?
A
And so, like, we made one. It's like, you had to. I think this one, I was also in, like, seventh. Seventh grade, something like that. And we had to sell an item, and so we. You had to create. You had to create an item and sell it and make a commercial for it. So I made a spray called Goat Be Gone. It was just water, but, like, we put in there that it was like, pheromones from, like, mountain lions and whatever. In emus. Like, we made, like, this.
B
Whatever mountain lion and emu family.
A
Yeah. And so, like, we Had a little pygmy goat named Buddy, and. And he would just, like, headbutt everybody and get into stuff the whole time. He was really fat. And so we would just, like, in the video, go, like, spray him with it, and he'd run away. But we made, like, a. Like, a goat. Be gone, Be gone. And I got. And I got all the ladies that boarded at our barn at the time, because we had, like, 20 borders to, like, sing in it.
B
Dude, you're negotiative power in the 6th and 7th grade just walked in. I was like, hey, guys, I've got. First off, everybody offset. Second off, I've got a. I've got a game plan for the day. I need you all ready for choir.
A
One of them. Let me put the goat in her jeep to, like. Like, we put the goat in her jeep and then sprayed it, and he, like, jumped out of it, and it was really funny.
B
Dude, that's great. That's fantastic. I think we should recreate all.
D
I feel like you probably had a great group of borders at that time for them to all be, like. Sure.
A
We all, like, had been there since I was, like, little. Yeah. And so I was, like, the. The kid. I was their kid.
B
That's a big ass. Okay, I need y' all to sing this jingle.
C
I think what we should do is just replace one of our weekly videos with a skit. It's like, every Saturday, it's a new skit.
A
Will you be involved in skits?
B
And then we're that way.
C
Anyway, like, that idea switch up was crazy.
B
It's crazy.
C
You should do it.
B
It was genuine laughter and then genuine fear.
A
Well, we already had, like. I think that would be some ideas about, like, I. I don't mind at horse shows if we just randomly break out into, like, a scene. Yeah, because, like. Like, at the last horse show, we talked about, like, my necklace, like, tearing.
C
Yeah.
A
Like, what if in the middle of these horror show videos, we just, like. It just, like, fades to black, and all of a sudden, there's, like, a. Like, a antique screen over the film, and, like, we sound like the transatlantic accents. And then it's. All of a sudden it's like we're in the 40s, and.
B
Yes.
A
We have, like, a dramatic scene.
C
The. The only thing that it wouldn't work is the. The clothes.
A
Oh, no. We're at a horse show in the 40s.
C
Okay. It works. It works. We're back.
A
Yeah. It's black and white. It's, you know.
B
Yeah.
C
Noir. We're solving a mystery.
A
Yeah, yeah. Anyway, we've. See, this is what happens, Stephanie.
D
I see now.
A
Do you see now the ADHD of this conversation.
C
But first off, isn't it great?
B
What an idea. And I think we really fleshed it out really well, and I think we've covered all bases. I can't think of anything that's.
A
We got to figure out the judge.
B
Figure out the judge.
D
I think.
A
Judges, Judges.
B
I think that's the only open commentators,
A
because that's the thing. I can be a commentator. But I think you're on to something that we need to have someone on the ground.
C
Judges, commentator, reporter, food truck. What if you had it like grandstands,
D
the Voice style or like American Idol? So like three people judges just sitting in chairs. I mean, it kind of cool like that. And then they just yip y. Just random thought.
A
That's hard finding. I don't know how you find the actual quarter horse judges that will yip yap.
D
Well, they don't all have to be judges, though.
A
I want it to be incredible.
D
They could just be very competent.
C
If I'm getting a buckle, I want a real judge.
D
But, like, there's different levels of being a judge. There's like, you're open show forage.
A
I think I could judge this sort of thing, and I'm not a professional.
B
If you're a 4H judge, like, you're good enough.
D
Yeah, that's.
B
Yeah, that's.
C
That's good.
D
Exactly.
A
I could get Ariel Heron, who. Who is the, you know, ball. Oh, yeah, yeah. Like, she's like the. The head coach of mtsu.
C
Yeah.
A
Or Buds. I could get her. I could get. I'm sure I could get Taft. Maybe I have too much confidence.
B
I don't know. After that whole, like, what you just said about those videos, I feel like you just have that way with people.
A
Oh, you wouldn't believe the projects.
C
I bet I would.
A
Built a whole rifle one weekend. I told my dad on a Friday night or on a Saturday night, I said, on Monday, I got to show up to school with a whole musket that we built. And it takes two weeks to build because of certain things. And he said, hmm, turns out you can't take it to school. It's a weapon. So we. I had bought the kit. We did it all in one night. I changed it. This is dishonest. I. We did all we like because you had to take pictures. There was no video. Like, this was. This was before they could fact check a whole lot. And we took pictures of me doing stuff on building this gun. All in different clothes, all in one night.
C
That's crazy.
A
Change my hair, changed clothes, all in one night. I got 100 anyway.
B
Oh, that's great.
C
Well, now they're good.
B
Honestly, that's struck.
A
I'm so sorry, Dr. Haigwood. Anyway.
B
Yeah, but that's great, though, dude. Social studies was such a goated subject. Goated. It's never. I've never had a bad. Bad social studies teacher. I've been to a lot of schools. I moved around a lot, but social studies go to subject. It's like.
A
It's like I moved around a lot, had a bad childhood. Anyway, it was the way you said it. It was like.
B
Yeah, just. Anyway, we're at an hour, by the way.
C
I'm excited.
B
Oh, my God.
A
Okay.
C
I'm excited about the quick without the.
B
Anyway, I'm. I'm for ropping the ball.
A
Okay. We've committed to this horse show.
C
We're doing it.
A
I still don't love. Like, I gotta figure out something to put on the buckle. I'm still not sold on running springs. Versatility.
B
There's some opening. There's something else here.
A
I think there's something else. We gotta find judges. I. I think we have at least. What is it now?
B
Plenty of time.
A
Three and a half months.
C
Yeah.
A
So I think. I think over that course of time, we didn't also settle. How many lessons you get? I think. I think one halter and grooming lesson should suffice.
D
And then just, like, a couple.
A
Right.
B
Or we can get together once a month over the next three months.
C
What if it's like. What if it's. What if you get. You get. Well, I don't want to give Rachel too many lessons.
A
They do need to learn how to ride in traffic, so they do need to have one group lesson.
D
Yeah.
B
Yeah. We can have something once, like, each month, like, something different. You know, I think maybe a day to halter, a day to the this, and then a group lesson.
A
I think you should do the halter one. Could be group. Yeah, easily. And that's something that you'll have to know how to, like, have your horse around other horses. And I think the Western Pleasure, you should have an individual lesson and then a group lesson, because part of the issue is maneuvering around horses like, Which. That arena is big, but just like small fries.
D
Yeah.
A
They're gonna. They're gonna be in a cluster. Cluster. The arena is huge.
D
Hopefully we could just spread them apart, though. You never know.
A
You think?
C
Well, I like mine to move a little more forward. So I'll probably catch everybody.
B
Well, and you know, Kennedy, he is a little forward horse, except when it comes to the wall.
C
You know, Kennedy, she does like to. She gets. She catches the group.
B
She does gets going.
C
She has to.
D
She doesn't like being left.
C
I'll just move her to the inside.
B
If she can go. If she stays on that inside. Now here's where it gets. And then this is what Aaron's been working on her with is you need to make sure that when you do take that corner, that you completely take that corner, because Katie's known for backing
D
off the corner completely.
A
Just don't use the corner.
D
Kidding.
A
Okay, so
B
just so y' all know,
A
we're knowledgeable, this is going to be either really good or horrible. So either way, you're getting a buckle.
C
Either way, we're getting a buckle, baby. Let's go. Top three.
D
Oh, my God.
A
I guess. Stay tuned for the first installments of the lesson videos and let us know if you have any. Any ideas for this because we're in the beginning stages. We can add things. Let me know. And thank you, Stephanie, for vibing with us today.
C
Yeah.
D
Thank you.
A
All right, see you on the next one.
Katie Van Slyke — Katching Up With Katie
Released: July 20, 2026
In this lively, unscripted episode, Katie Van Slyke and friends brainstorm, plan, and ultimately commit to hosting their own private horse show at Running Springs. The conversation meanders through hilarious anecdotes, farm life realities, and creative ideas for the event, mixing genuine excitement with classic Southern humor. Regular guests Stephanie and Matt join in, as well as Rachel (virtually), making it a group effort to flesh out logistics, competition rules, and the all-important costume class. The result is a snapshot of real ranch life, friendship, and just how much fun it is to turn a wild idea into a reality.
In trademark relaxed and irreverent Running Springs fashion, the group’s planning zig-zags from detailed logistics to comic improvisation, with a shared awareness that the whole endeavor is as much about having fun as it is about competition (“Either way, we’re getting a buckle, baby!” — 53:52). Katie’s enthusiastic, inclusion-focused leadership shines, ensuring everyone feels involved and the show incorporates both challenge and humor.
If you love peeking behind the curtain of farm life, enjoy unscripted hilarity, and are curious how a small team of friends can dream up a truly original horse show, this episode is for you. From creative classes (hello, costume monologue!), to the agony and comedy of drawing competitive mounts, this “meeting that became a movement” is farmstead friendship at its finest. Expect follow-up episodes delving into lesson prep, training mishaps, and probably some unforgettable costumes.
