It's Halloween night in Sleepy Forest and a huge contest is about to take place. The biggest clearing in the centre of the forest has been transformed for Spooky the Bush Baby's annual Halloween party. This year, Coco the Koala had an idea that would make this Spooky's best party yet. Halloween Hide and Seek. That's right. Koko scratched his little koala head and decided that wearing a costume was one thing, but why not take it to the next level and challenge his friends to disappear entirely until he found them anyway? That's how Coco ended up standing on the makeshift stage dressed as Luigi, with a microphone in his hand and a huge ginormous pumpkin full of sweets at his feet. A gaggle of animals beamed up at him, bouncing excitedly on their heels. Seven plucky individuals had signed up to take part. Kira, Coco's panda sister, Fritz the Frog, Munchie the Raccoon, Potato and Beans, the dinocats, Dinky the Tiny Giraffe, and Leo the Lion. Welcome to Halloween Hide and seek, Koko said The rules are simple. I'm going to close my eyes and count to 10. That's when you run and hide. Then one by one, I'll use my detective koalifications to find you. Kira giggled. She always laughed at Koko's jokes, even the rubbish ones. The one who stays hidden for the longest will win a grand prize. This ginormous pumpkin stuffed full of Halloween candy. Coco lifted the lid of the pumpkin and a couple of toffees slipped down its side. It was filled to the brim with sweets and chocolates from Papa Pralines, all wrapped in multicolored paper. The group oohed and ahhed at the prize. Munchie the raccoon was practically drooling. Koko asked if the group was ready, and they all cheered, clapped, and whooped. Then he put his velvety paws over his eyes and began to count. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. Ready or not, here I come. Koko dropped his paws. Although the party was still going on, the space in front of Koko's stage was now empty. His friends had disappeared into thin air. Koko reached into his dungaree pocket and pulled out a flashlight. He clicked it on and swooped it across the clearing. Wherever could they be? Koko scratched his chin and wondered where he would hide. He glanced at the trees surrounding the clearing. Though they were strung with orange glowing lanterns and fairy lights, there were still shadows cast by their leaves and branches, sure to hide any sneaky animals. That would be the perfect place to start. Koko headed into the trees, looping around trunks and peeking into tree holes. Shining his flashlight into the darkness, he mumbled to himself as he went, as he always did. I wish I could tell a tree joke right now, he murmured, but I'm stumped. A giggle echoed through the darkness. Koko raised an eyebrow. He'd know that giggle anywhere. Kira must be nearby. He kept looking, a little skip in his step, knowing he was about to find his sister. But then something bounced off his Luigi cap. He looked down. There was an acorn. How peculiar. He looked up. Sure enough, there were two shapes hanging in the tree overhead. Bats. Only they were pretty big to be bats, and they had long tails. And hadn't there been two players dressed as bats tonight? Potato and beans, I've found you. Koko called up into the trees. The two cats faces emerged from behind their makeshift wings. Oh, boy. I thought we were onto a winner up here, bean said. They were both hanging upside down from their back legs, claws holding them in place in the bark like Real bats. It was a top effort. Er, Coco Potato said, a touch of worry in her voice. Can you help us down? Koko giggled. Of course the silly kitties would get stuck in a tree. Luckily there was a fireman nearby. Buck the beaver had put on a yellow hat and thrown a hose over his shoulder for his costume. He'd help. Koko. Shouted Buck from the party. And the beaver came running over and started chomping on the tree so that soon it had come bending down towards the floor. Thanks, Buck. Koko called over his shoulder as he headed back into the clearing to the party. He passed the bobbing apples and the big pyramid of pumpkins and headed towards the buffet table where a huge spread had been laid out. Koko licked his lips. Maybe he could have a little snack to help fuel his search. He walked down the table checking out the sugar cookies and cupcakes, the fruit salads and the wobbling jelly. It was actually a very wobbly jelly, suspiciously wobbly. It jiggled and wiggled and wibbled and wobbled like no jelly Koko had seen before. He poked it with his finger and then looked closer. There in the middle of the jelly was Fritz the frog, still in his green crayon costume, blended in perfectly with the green of the jelly. Found you. Koko shouted and the little frog burst out of the jelly laughing. Coco. I would have won had I been able to stop my shoulders shaking. It just made me laugh seeing you looking for me like that. Koko high fived the little frog and left him, licking jelly off his fingers, continuing his search. It was then that he remembered the giggle that sounded so much like Kira out in the woods. So he went back amongst the trees. The leaves overhead had turned gold and orange and begun to fall, piling up on the forest floor. There were little piles here and there, and then one huge pile. Koko looked up at the treetops. The leaves had been falling for a couple of weeks by now, but there couldn't have been enough to make a pile like that. Koko put his finger into the pile and poked. A high peal of laughter sounded out and Kira rolled out of the mound. Found you. Koko said, and the two of them went chuckling back into the party. As he walked back into the clearing, Koko paid more attention to his surroundings this time. He peered into the big bucket of water where apples were bobbing. No one there. Then he took in the big decorative display of pumpkins waiting to be carved as he watched Spooky the bush baby in her bumblebee costume approach the stack of pumpkins, picked one and took it over to the carving station. There, peeking out from the hole it left behind, was a giraffe. Dinky, the giraffe found you. Koko shouted. That left two more Leo the lion and Munchie the raccoon. Koko was sure there were no more hiding places here at the party. Where could they be? He crossed the clearing and passed through the maple trees, which led to the pond. The stars were twinkling on the water's surface, which was still as glass until. Splash. A golden shape emerged from the water, panting. Leo the lion, still in his dinosaur onesie and soaking wet. Oh, hey, Koko, he said. I just couldn't hold my breath any longer. Koko shook his head and took Leo's hand to help him out of the pond. What kind of a silly sausage would try and hide underwater? Koko and Leo stepped back into the party and headed over to the giant candy stuffed pumpkin where the other players had gathered. Is that everyone? Kira asked, beginning to count. No, there's one more Munchie. He must be our winner. The friends began calling Munchie, telling him to come out. A rustle came from within the prize pumpkin. The friends gathered closer and then Munchie burst from the pumpkin, throwing his hands in the air so candy bounced up and rained down on them all. Munchie, Coco said you were in the prize pumpkin the whole time. The friends laughed. We should have known. Kira said. Where else would he be? Munchie did a victory dance and then handed big handfuls of sweets to his friends. Whose go is it now? He said. Is it mine? He threw his paws over his eyes and started to count. His friends all scrambled to hide and Koko ran off into the trees, giggling and thinking to himself that a new tradition had been made tonight. Halloween hide and seek was here to stay.
