For as long as they could remember, ever since they were just a tiny little capybara and a bleary eyed baby chickadee, Capi and Tito had heard stories about Machu Picchu. It was, after all, the most famous place in all of Peru, the ruins of an ancient citadel perched on a steep mountain ridge. It was, they said, built on an old civilization called the Incas many hundreds of years ago. The Incas ruled over not only Peru, but but many other countries in South America. Whenever they listened to their parents tell stories about Machu Picchu curled up in the silvery moonlight as they fell asleep, Capi and Tito would picture a glorious castle at the top of a towering mountain in which people held wondrous festivals, ate at great banquets, and wore long capes of glittering red and gold. And in the daytime, the two of them would march up and down the riverbank pretending that they were the ancient Incas themselves. Yes, Machu Picchu utterly captivated the imaginations of young Cappy and Tito. But they'd never actually been to Machu Picchu. They'd never seen it with their very own eyes. That was until one morning when Kappy's mum bustled out of the little riverside grotto where they lived. Kappy and Tito were busy in the garden fashioning a parasol out of big waxy leaves to keep the already hot sun off their heads. Tito used his little beak to delicately thread twine through holes in the leaves, while Capi used her strong teeth to tighten the knots. Cappy's mum gave a little cough. Now listen up, you two, she said. I have something to talk to you about. Capi and Tito paused what they were doing, both turning to look at Capi's mum. Tito still had a bit of twine caught in his beak. Both of them were used to this. As wonderful as Cappy's mum was, she did have a habit of coming and interrupting whatever they were doing to give them some long speech or commentary on her day before turning around on her heels and going back indoors.

"For as long as they could remember, ever since they were just a tiny little capybara and a bleary eyed baby chickadee, Capi and Tito had heard stories about Machu Picchu."
