It is a truth universally acknowledged that of all the living beings that exist upon the earth, only humans are capable of using the telephone. This truth, however, is no truth at all. It is, in fact, a misconception. There is another very special species who boasts this particular ability. Can you guess what species that might be? Oh, you got it, dogs. Dogs know just how to use a telephone. But given that it suits dogs just fine for humans to go on thinking incorrectly that that they are the smartest and most technologically advanced creatures on the planet, the canine collective keeps this secret little skill of theirs well hidden, better overall that humans are kept firmly in the dark. But what this means is that whenever a dog does need to use the phone, they often have to come up with some elaborate scheme to make sure their human beings don't catch wind of their telecommunications. They have to send a series of yips and barks to forewarn their friends that the phone is about to ring and make sure any human beings who might be hanging around are kept safely out of the way. Which is exactly what Hector and Sunny had to do one warm autumn afternoon. They were lying beneath the tree in Hector's back garden when the occasional golden leaf broke from the branches above their heads and drifted merrily to the ground. Then, quite suddenly, Sunny lifted her chin from off her paws, her ears pricking up high. Did you hear that, Hector? She said. Hear what? Replied Hector, whose Labrador ears were always that little bit slower to pick up on things than her spaniel ones. What? Can you hear some barking? Sunny said. Im pretty sure I can hear some dog barking your name. And sure enough, in just a moment Hector heard it too, the yipping and the yowling of Hector's name by the neighbourhood dogs, alerting him that in just a few seconds the phone would ring swiftly. For by now Hector and Sunny knew exactly what to do when the news of a phone call arrived. They jumped up from underneath a tree and scampered inside the house. You go and stand by the phone, sunny told Hector. I'll go check on your owner. So Hector headed over to the little side table where the phone sat, and Sunny trotted into the living room where Hector's owner was. She gave a little yip. The coast was clear. Hector's owner was happily immersed in a video game. So when the call arrived, and Hector snatched up the phone with his paw before it even had a chance to fully ring in the living room, his owner didn't notice a thing. Hello? Hector asked, putting the phone to his ear. Good afternoon, Hector, came the voice through the phone. This is Coach Howler. Ah, Coach Howler. This was the call Hector had been waiting for with much nervous excitement. Coach Howler was in charge of organising the Doggo Sports Day, an annual event which was the highlight of the calendar for all the dogs that lived in town. This year Sunny was competing in the treasure hunt, but Hector had applied for a different role entirely. And Coach Howler must be calling now to tell him whether he'd got it. Episode Release Date: March 5, 2025
[02:15] Narrator: The episode begins by debunking the common misconception that only humans can use telephones. Instead, it reveals that dogs possess this remarkable ability, albeit kept secret from humans to maintain the illusion of human superiority. The narrator sets the stage for an adventurous tale featuring two canine protagonists, Hector and Sunny.
“Of all the living beings that exist upon the earth, only humans are capable of using the telephone. This truth, however, is no truth at all.” [02:20]
The story introduces Hector, a Labrador with somewhat slower ears, and Sunny, a keen-eared Spaniel. On a serene autumn afternoon, as golden leaves drifted to the ground, Sunny detects unusual sounds.
Sunny: “Did you hear that, Hector?" [03:00]
Hector: “Hear what?” [03:02]
Sunny: “Can you hear some dog barking your name.” [03:05]
Their heightened senses pick up on their fellow neighborhood dogs' efforts to alert Hector about an impending phone call. Recognizing the sign, Hector and Sunny prepare to execute their well-practiced plan to use the telephone without alerting their human.
As the phone rings, the duo springs into action. Sunny takes responsibility for checking on Hector's owner, who is engrossed in a video game, ensuring no human interference.
Sunny: “You go and stand by the phone,” [04:20]
Hector approaches the phone, ready to intercept the call before it reaches his owner.
Hector: “Hello?” [04:30]
On the other end of the line is Coach Howler, the organizer of the annual Doggo Sports Day—a highly anticipated event among the canine community. This year, Sunny is participating in the treasure hunt, while Hector has applied for a different role. The phone call is crucial as it will reveal whether Hector has been selected for his desired position.
Coach Howler: “Good afternoon, Hector. This is Coach Howler.” [04:35]
Hector's nervous excitement builds as he awaits the decision, highlighting the significance of the Sports Day for all the town's dogs.
The narrative emphasizes themes of teamwork, secrecy, and the unique bond between Hector and Sunny. Their coordinated efforts to use the telephone demonstrate resourcefulness and the importance of supporting each other in achieving their goals.
The episode concludes with a cliffhanger, leaving listeners eager to find out the outcome of Hector's application for the Sports Day. This engaging storytelling encourages children to anticipate the next installment, promoting continued listening and imagination.
"Hector & Sunny's Sports Day 🐶🥏" is a delightful addition to the Koala Moon series, blending magical realism with relatable themes for both children and grown-ups.
