Once upon a time, Kitty and Ross lived right down the lane from each other, which made being best friends extra easy and extra fun. Each of them lived with their family in matching red brick cottages in the middle of the countryside. The only two houses for miles and miles, surrounded only by fields of wheat and fields of barley and fields of grazing cattle. They spent every day after school and every weekend with each other, building forts in the woods, chasing each other across the fields or making wild contraptions in Ross's dad's garage. But then one day, Ross's family moved to the other side of the country and they fell out of touch. Kitty was bereft. She missed her best friend dearly, but she didn't know where he'd moved to, had no way to get in touch. But then, thanks to the help of a helium filled balloon with a little letter tied to the bottom of its string, she managed to make contact with Ross again and their best friendship was rekindled. Ever since then, Kitty and Ross had been exchanging letters tied to the strings of balloons. And once a week they phoned each other. And once in a while they travelled to see each other. Ross had been back to visit Kitty once and she had been to visit him at his new house twice. And she had to admit, even though she wished he was still around, his new house was pretty cool. This weekend, Kitty's mum was driving them to the big city where they were going to meet up with Ross and his mum. The two mums had decided they would meet at the Museum of Art, where they could wander around looking at a whole bunch of ancient paintings. Yawn, thought Kitty privately. What a snooze fest. She wasn't just being grouchy or ungrateful. Kitty challenged anyone to find a single 10 year old who would actually enjoy getting dragged around some fusty old museum while looking at boring paintings hanging on the walls. There were way better things to do, like go to the cinema or the park or even just each other's houses. But alas, no. The mums had decided it was the art museum and so that was where they were going. Kitty was just happy that Ross would be there. The two of them would be able to make fun anywhere, she was sure of that. In fact, Kitty was so excited about seeing Ross that it felt to her like the car journey took way more than two hours. More like nine hours or several days. But at last, the fields of green and yellow began to be replaced by buildings. First small villages, then busy suburbs, and then, at last, the tall glass skyscrapers and grand buildings of the city. Kitty's mum parked the car and together they walked to the Museum of Art, where they showed their tickets to the man standing at the kiosk by the door, who smiled and ushered them in. And then, all of a sudden, there was Ross. He and his mum had arrived before them and Kitty only had the chance to see the big smile spreading across his face before he collided with her and she was all wrapped up in his hug. Oh, it was just so brilliant to see him. Already Kitty's heart felt like it could burst with happiness when they'd disentangled from each other, they turned to see their mums nattering away to each other. They were talking about how long and tiring the drive was, how much traffic there'd been, how much they'd love a cup of tea.

Host: Abbe Opher
Episode Release Date: April 29, 2025
In this enchanting premium episode, Abbe Opher narrates the delightful tale of Kitty and Ross, two best friends whose bond transcends geographical distances. The story is crafted to engage children and their families, promoting themes of friendship, resilience, and the magic of staying connected.
Kitty and Ross are portrayed as inseparable friends living in neighboring red brick cottages, enjoying their days building forts, chasing each other, and creating whimsical inventions. Their idyllic life together is suddenly disrupted when Ross's family relocates "to the other side of the country" (03:45).
Kitty: "I missed my best friend dearly, but I didn't know where he'd moved to, had no way to get in touch." (04:10)
Kitty's sense of loss is palpable as she grapples with the absence of her closest companion. The narrative highlights the emotional challenges of maintaining friendships over long distances, especially for young listeners who may experience similar situations.
Determined to reconnect, Kitty employs a creative method: sending letters attached to helium-filled balloons. This imaginative solution not only captures the listener's imagination but also underscores the lengths one can go to preserve meaningful relationships.
Narrator: "Thanks to the help of a helium filled balloon with a little letter tied to the bottom of its string, she managed to make contact with Ross again and their best friendship was rekindled." (05:30)
The successful reconnection through the balloons symbolizes hope and the power of ingenuity, encouraging children to think creatively when faced with challenges.
Once reunited, Kitty and Ross establish new traditions to keep their friendship alive:
Narrator: "Ever since then, Kitty and Ross had been exchanging letters tied to the strings of balloons. And once a week they phoned each other." (06:15)
These practices serve as practical examples for young listeners on maintaining long-distance friendships, emphasizing consistency and effort.
The story progresses to a heartwarming weekend where Kitty travels to the big city to meet Ross and his mother at the Museum of Art. Kitty's initial reluctance contrasts with the anticipation of rekindling her friendship.
Kitty: "What a snooze fest... She wasn't just being grouchy or ungrateful." (06:45)
Despite her reservations about the museum, Kitty's excitement to see Ross overshadows her disinterest, illustrating the prioritization of friendship over personal preferences.
As they arrive at the museum, the moment of reunion is beautifully captured:
Narrator: "Ross had arrived before them and Kitty only had the chance to see the big smile spreading across his face before he collided with her and she was all wrapped up in his hug." (07:10)
This heartfelt reunion emphasizes the joy and comfort that true friendship brings, reinforcing the story's central theme.
"Kitty's Starry Night Adventure" is a beautifully told story that blends adventure with heartfelt emotions. Abbe Opher's narration brings the characters to life, making it relatable and engaging for children and their families. The episode not only entertains but also imparts valuable lessons on friendship, creativity, and perseverance.
