Hey Koala Tots. Are you ready for a snooze? We're headed to a place of soft purrs and mews. It's called Kitten Kindergarten. It's obvious why it's filled with baby cats, two of whom are shy, but don't worry. Today the two cats will play in their pretend diner. They'll cook away the day and when nap time comes around all tired and sleepy, they'll realise they're best friends and always will be. The sun drenched playroom of Kitten Kindergarten was filled with gentle meows, softly tumbling blocks and tinkling bells. Every morning kittens arrived, tumbling out of carriers with soft purrs and filled each bright corner of the nursery. One such kitten was a slinky brown cat named Potato. She had shiny chocolate coloured fur dappled with swirls of coffee. Her whiskers twitched nervously when someone looked her way and she often nestled herself between the legs of the teacher's chair in the reading nook, peeking out through the pages of an open picture book. The other was Beans, a fluffy round white kitten splodged with amber as if someone had dripped paint all over her. Beans preferred the safety of the toy shelf shadows where she could observe the other kittens playing with blocks, chasing feathers or wrestling in the soft play tunnel. She longed to join in, but like Potato, she was too shy. They had noticed each other before. Potato saw how Beans always curled her tail around her body like a scarf. And Beans had once watched Potato line all her crayons up in the colours of the rainbow. They were shy in the same way, quiet, cautious and a little overwhelmed by the big bouncing energy of the others. Then came this one cosy morning when it was raining outside and all the cats were picking spots to play inside. Ms. Maple, the fluffy Ragdoll teacher, had brought a new toy into the playroom. A cafe playset. It was an adorable setup. A little counter made of wood, a toy cash register with chirpy buttons, a pretend espresso machine, and colourful menus with silly kitten meals like tuna, pancakes and mackerel and cheese. Behind the counter was a play kitchen with tiny dishes, plastic cups with whipped foam toppers, felted muffins and sandwiches, and a toy bell that went ding when an order was up. None of the other kittens had gone to play with the new playset. They were busy batting trains along train tracks and colouring in and dressing up in fancy costumes. Potato sat by the cafe set, her tail curled over her paws, just watching. She liked the look of the toy. Beans was under the shelf, pawing absentmindedly at a yarn mouse, pretending not to notice. But she was watching too. Her ears perked at the sound of the register buttons. Then her little green apron with embroidered strawberries slipped off the hook of the cafe playset. Near Potato she blinked at was like an invitation to go play. She looked around. Every kitten was busy. She slowly padded over and picked it up behind the playset. Beans watched. Her nose twitched. Potato sat quietly by the side of the cafe, slipping the apron over her head. She picked up a wooden spoon and Beans looked up at the other apron left on the hook a yellow apron with tiny polka dots. Something warm stirred in Beans chest. It wasn't courage exactly, but curiosity. She glanced at the kittens clustered around their toys and table, all bustling and noisy. Then she looked back at Potato. She was sitting near the bakery part of the set, organizing the felt muffins into neat rows. Beans reached out a paw, hooked the yellow apron, and quietly padded toward her. Potato looked up just as she reached her her eyes widened. Hi, she said softly. I'm Potato. Hi, beans replied just as softly. I'm Beans. Beans blinked. Are you the baker? Potato looked at the muffins. I guess I am. Bean sat beside her. Then could I be the chef? Potato's whiskers twitched. We could run the cafe together. Bean smiled and the game began. They spread out a mini checkered mat, set up a second counter with a toy toaster and mini fridge, and hung a crayon sign over the counter. Potato and Beans Diner. Potato made muffin towers and balanced plates with careful paws. Beans stirred invisible soup in a pot and wrote down recipes on scrap paper. Their voices grew a little louder just between the two of them. What's this special today? Potato asked. Beans peeked into the plastic fridge. Hmm, looks like we have mashed tuna with a side of crunchy biscuit stars. Potato giggled. Do we serve it with warm milk? Only the extra foamy kind, bean said, pretending to pour it into a teacup fluffed with bubbles. They practised friendly meows for when customers came. Beans tried a low one. Hello, sir and madam. Welcome. Come to the diner. Potato did a sing song version. Howdy. Can I take your order? They gave each other jobs. Potato was the muffin manager and customer Cuddler. Beans was head chef. Soon their little cafe began to draw attention. Muffin, a chubby kitten with orange and white patches, trotted over curiously. Do you have any salmon scones? Potato nodded solemnly. Only the freshest ones you've ever tasted. Beans passed through a pink felt triangle on a saucer. Here you go. Muffin nibbled. The corner purred and joined their game. Next came Smudge, then Biscuit, then Nori and Crumble. All of them sat at the box tables, placing silly orders and mewing politely. Potato took their requests with a serious face. Beans whipped up dishes with dramatic flair. And in between customers, the two kittens talked. Beans told Potato about how coming to the kindergarten had made her nervous with loud noises making her tail curl up like a snail shell. Potato admitted that she sometimes pretended to nap just to avoid saying hi. They both agreed that now they'd been brave and made a friend. It all seemed quite easy, actually. They were having such a nice time. They shared their favourite dreams. Potatoes was swimming in whipped cream. Beans's was floating on a boat made of toast. Their favourite snow snacks. Potato, fish fingers, Beans, eggy bread. And their favourite songs, dances and movies. And slowly, something magical began to happen. Their voices grew much more confident. Their tails stopped curling so tight. One afternoon, Ms. Maple padded over and sat beside their cafe. What a lovely little business you've started, she purred. Beans looked up. We made the menu ourselves. And the muffins, Potato added. Ms. Maple tapped the bell. Ding. One warm milk with extra cinnamon, please. They served her proudly. Potato and Beans Diner had become the cosiest spot in Kitten Kindergarten. It was more than a playset now. It was their place, a quiet space where even shy kittens could be themselves together that day. To mark the end of their first week at kitten kindergarten, Ms. Maple gave every kitten a badge. Some got Super Skipper or Block Building Champion, but Beans and Potato each got a green ribbon with gold letters that read Top Chef. They wore them proudly. When it was time to pack away the cafe for the day, a gentle hush had begun to settle over the kindergarten, the kind of quiet that drapes itself over everything like a soft blanket. Last order, warm milk and biscuit crumble, potato announced, scribbling onto a napkin with a crayon. Coming right up, beans replied, standing on her hind legs to reach the pretend oven. She popped a felt biscuit onto a saucer, added a drizzle of invisible honey, and placed it beside a teacup filled with puffy cotton wool that looked just like foamed milk. They sat at their miniature cafe table, two tired kittens in little wrinkled aprons. Beans yawned. Do you think real chefs get sleepy after being baking? Potato nodded. Probably. Especially if they make extra fluffy muffins. Beans pretended to sip. Hmm, this milk has the perfect amount of bubbles. Potato giggled, licking an imaginary drop off her paw. And the biscuit are just the right kind of crumbly. As they finished their make believe snack, the classroom lights dimmed to a soft, warm glow. The bustle of the day slowed to a purr. Toys were gently put away, aprons untied. Ms. Maple rang the silver bell with a Light Paw. Alright, little ones, she meowed sweetly. It's time to begin our nap time. The kittens padded over to the cosy nook near the windows where soft mats lay in dappled sunlight. Plush clouds hung from the ceiling on strings, and a tiny night light in the shape of a sleepy star twinkled in the corner. Beans curled her tail around potatoes as they found mats next to one another, one with a print of tiny fish and one scented like lavender. Potato sniffed the air. Smells sleepy. Beans settled down with a sigh. I'm ready to snooze, she purred. Ms. Maple gently dimmed the rest of the lights and padded to the front of the circle. Her silvery tail wrapped around her paws as she opened a storybook and began to read. She spoke in the softest voice, like a lullaby. Today, she whispered, we'll take a journey to the land of catnaps. Potato's ears perked up. Beans blinked slowly. The other kittens lay on their sides, paws tucked under. Ready? Miss Maple began. Let's all close our eyes, take a big slow breath in, and let it out with a soft purr. The room filled with quiet kitten breaths, some giggles, and a few sleepy sighs. Imagine you're lying on a warm windowsill, just like your favourite sunny spot at home. The sun is gentle and golden, and your fur is warm and soft. Wiggle your toes one by one like you're kneading a cloud. Potato curled her paws slowly. Beans twitched her ears and smiled. Now take a tiny stretch, just a little one, as if you're reaching toward a floating feather. Let it go. Let your body feel heavy and happy. Ms. Maple's voice flowed like a purring stream. In your dream, you're the tiniest tiger in the tall grass. The world is big and soft. You can nap wherever you want in a tulip, in a cookie jar, even in a shoebox. A few tails flicked in the room. Potato imagined the shoebox lined with marshmallows so fluffy that she sank right in. Beans pictured herself asleep in a hammock slung between two big green cacti. Now, Ms. Maple murmured, imagine a cosy blanket. It floats down from the stars and wraps you up in sleepy purrs. It smells like warm milk. It feels like being hugged by a hundred sleepy paws. Potato sighed happily. Beans let out a teeny, tiny snore. In the land of catnaps, Ms. Maple continued, you can ride on butterflies, chase moonbeams, or curl up in a cloud. You can visit a library where all the books are written in purse, or you can nap on a pillow the size of a mountain. She paused and smiled at the room full of slowly rising bellies and twitching whiskers. Wherever you go in your dream, know this. You are safe, you are loved, and when you wake, it'll be time to laugh and play again. She gave a final instruction as calming as a tummy rub. Now sleep, little kittens. Your dreams are waiting. She padded softly between the mats, tucking each kitten in with a gentle nudge of her nose or a paw pat. When she reached Potato and Beans, she paused. They were curled up like ying and yang, tails intertwined, tiny paws folded under their chins. Beans was asleep but whispering something about toast boats and a sea of jelly. Potato was breathing slowly, a faint smile on her sleepy face. Ms. Maple leaned close and purred quietly. Sweet dreams, my soft hearted chefs. She tiptoed away, leaving the room filled with the slow rhythm of kitten nap time, breaths, whisker wiggles, and the occasional twitch of a dreaming paw. Time in Kitten Kindergarten moved like honey, slow and golden. Nap time was always the gentlest part of the day, a quiet pause to take in everything the kittens had done and felt. And for Potato and Beans, their day had been full. They'd run a cafe, they'd made new friends, they'd served salmon scones with a side of pretend whipped cream, and now, side by side, they floated in the soft, endless sky of dreams. Back in the classroom, Ms. Maple sat in her corner with her own cup of tea, watching the rise and fall of little backs and bellies. The room was still. A sunbeam dusted Potato's ear. She thought of how quiet they'd both been at the start of the week, how gently they'd lean toward each other, how proud they looked behind their cardboard cafe counter. She sipped her tea and smiled.
