If you happen to be passing the busiest city in the world on this particular night, and you happen to look up at exactly the right tall grey building, and you happen to be able to see right to the very top, you might have seen the bright whiteness of an owl fluttering around and the dark silhouette of a very large cat. And perhaps if you happen to know the story of the owl and the pussycat, you might not think it so very strange to see these animals so close to each other. And perhaps you may realize in a rush of understanding that you were looking at Barnaby and George. George is the huge grey fluffball of a cat who lives with a family right at the top of that large grey building, moving between Oscar's lap and Ollie's lap and the end of Oscar's bed and the end of Ollie's bed. He spends his days sleeping on a windowsill, catching the sunlight when it shines and feeling the warmth from the fire in the winter. He used to pass his days wondering about what it might be like out there in the world. How it would feel to be heading off across the rolling green hills towards the purple mountains that reached for the sky in the distance. But now he remembers the adventure he had with his friend Barnaby. Barnaby is the owl who persuaded George to come with him to the boating lake where they sailed a pea green boat across the moonlight dappled waters and found the land where the bong tree grows and they danced by the light of the moon and ate honey with a runcible spoon. But that trip was many months ago and George had been dreaming of another visit to the outside world ever since. He longed to feel the soft fresh green of the grass beneath his paws and to smell the scent of honeysuckle drifting on the night air. From his home far, far in the sky he could see that the leaves had once more changed colour on the trees and the green brightness had gone to be replaced with oranges and reds and yellows and browns. And if he squinted really hard he could sometimes see a single leaf spiralling gently towards the ground. George had watched children kicking piles of leaves and jumping into them and, well, he wanted to try that too. When Oscar and Ollie came back from school one day, a single damp yellow leaf had clung to the back of Oscar's boot and George had watched over the evening as the leaf had slowly dried out in the warmth of the home and then finally had peeled off and come to rest on the floor. George had spent the best part of an hour playing with that leaf, lying on his back and patting it with his paws to keep it in the air and then pushing it off the window sill to watch it drift gently to the carpet below. The next morning, Oscar and Ollie's mother had tutted as she picked up the leaf and threw it into the bin, reminding the boys to check their shoes properly before they came in. And that was the last leaf George got to meet. Listen to the full episode by joining the Coco Club. Unlock the entire back catalogue of Coco Club exclusives and enjoy all episodes completely ad free.
