Now though, we're going to meet a young trainee witch called Wizzily who comes across a sweet glow worm while gathering magical ingredients in the forest. Wizzily hopes that she can help grant the Glowworm his special wish using the knowledge she's acquired during her training. In a moment, let's see if she has what it takes. First of all though, get comfy in bed, snuggle down and close your eyes. Can you imagine the moon? A big, bright glowing moon beaming its light down upon you. That's right, take a lovely deep breath in and let it out. Breathe in and out. Imagine the moonbeams of all different colours. It's time now to begin. Wizzily, Witch and the Glowworm's Wish by Elisha Ainslie Wizzly was a witch. Well, a witch in training to be exact. Wizzily lived with her aunts and helped out in their magic shop. Wizzily's aunts, Drusilla and Portia, taught young Wizzily in the way of the witches. They educated her on magical ingredients, spells and potions, and most importantly, instilled in her the witch's code. It was important for all witches to uphold the witch's code so that they always use their magic for the greater good to help others. Wizzily's aunts took this very seriously. They sold bottles of good luck potions, spells that made people feel extra warm and fuzzy, and loved lotions that would give the wearer strength in good health and protection charms. Wizzly loved assisting her aunts in the creation of all their lovely products. Wizzily wasn't quite old enough to read from her aunt's magic book yet, but one day she would be, and then she would be accepted into their witch's coven as a fully fledged witch. But that didn't stop Wizzly from picking up a spell or two along the way. She watched her aunts closely whenever they cast a spell or mixed a potion and Wizzly had remembered several mystical incantations. Her knowledge of magical ingredients was ever growing. And potion making was one of Wizzly's favourite subjects to study. One afternoon, Wizzly was dusting the shelves in her aunt's magic shop when her aunt Drusilla gave her a task. Wizzily, she said, please, will you go into the forest and collect some of the following ingredients? To restock the shelves, Aunt Drusilla handed Wizzly a shopping list. They needed valerian root, butterfly wing dust, milky oats, and bee balm. Wizzly knew exactly where she could find all of these ingredients. The trainee witch ditched her duster right away and put on her cloak. She popped her pointed patchwork witch's hat on top of her short red hair and grabbed her magic wand. She never went anywhere without her magic wand. Then she waved goodbye to her aunts and left the magic shop in search of the ingredients they needed to stock their shop shelves. Wizzily wandered through sleepy Forest humming to herself on the way to the meadow. She often visited the meadow when she needed ingredients. It was a perfect place to find the likes of milky oats and butterfly dust. And just beyond the meadow was a clearing that Wizzily knew would be full of bee balm. Wizzly would be there in next to no time and easily be back home by nightfall. She reached the meadow by mid afternoon and immediately started gathering the ingredients. She collected milky oats in her bag and scraped butterfly dust from the petals of the plants where the winged creatures had landed. It was easy to find butterfly dust in the daytime as it twinkled with a soft glittery glow. Then she walked through the meadow and over to the clearing where she knew bee balm, otherwise known as bergamot grew. Bushes brimming with the tiny purple and yellow flowers filled the clearing and Wizzily set to work plucking the bee balm petals from their foliage. She filled her bag up with as many petals as she believed would fit in the jar in her aunt's magic shop, ensuring she gathered a mixture of colours to make the ingredients jar look extra appealing. Bee balm was a popular ingredient in sleep spells and powerful potions. All of a sudden, Wizzly's focus was interrupted by the sound of a little voice. Hello up there. The little voice called out to Wizzily. Wizzily glanced down at the ground and spotted a little glowworm waving its tiny arm up at her in greeting. The funny thing about glowworms is that they aren't actually worms at all. They're beetles, but they look like worms as they're long and sausage shaped with bottoms that glow green at night. Wizzily giggled, and as she politely responded to the tiny bug, well, hello to you too. The friendly little glowworm introduced himself. My name is Sir Peter. Sir Peter Worm. Who are you? He asked. Wizzly introduced herself in return, wondering why the tiny bug was so keen to strike up a conversation with her. The curious glowworm looked from Wizzily's handful of petals to her bag brimming with ingredients and inquired, what are you doing with the bee balm? Wizzily explained with a blush that she was picking the flowers for her aunt's magic shop. They used bee balm in several of their potions. She hoped that Sir Peter didn't mind that she was plucking bee balm from the leaves. But the little glowworm didn't seem to mind at all. In fact, he seemed very intrigued. As soon as she mentioned that she mixed potions, pointing to the triangular hat on her head, the glowworm gasped and exclaimed, you are a witch, aren't you? Oh, how exciting. I've never met a witch before. Wizzly grinned, though technically she was a trainee witch. But the little critter didn't need to know that. Sir Peter Worm clapped his little hands together and replied, oh goody. Well, you sure have brightened up a bag day. Wizzily cocked her head with curiosity. Why was the glowworm's day so bad? Sir Peter explained. Glowworms get their name from their bioluminescent bottoms. At night, female glowworms light up brightly for everyone to see, and they look absolutely glorious when they do. And Sir Peter had recently laid eyes on the most beautiful glowworm of them all. Ileana. When Ileana glowed, she glowed brighter than all the other worms. Even the stars were jealous of her radiant beauty. Wizzly's heart swelled as she listened to Sir Peter's sweet story. Sir Peter, the romantic glowworm, had fallen madly in love with Ilana. The problem was that Ilana never seemed to notice him. He tried to get her attention, but he couldn't. Sir Peter's bottom barely glowed. He tried with all his might to force his bottom to radiate with neon green light, but all he did was weakly flicker and fade into the darkness. So he had resigned himself to the fact that Ileana would never look his way or notice him. Wizzily listened to Sir Peter Worm's story and felt sorry for the little guy. She wished there was a way she could help him. She glanced at the bag of ingredients she had collected in her hand and suddenly had an idea. You know, I may have a spell to help you with your problem. Wizzly whispered excitedly. The little glowworm's eyes lit up. Really? You do? He gasped with hope. Wizzily nodded her head excitedly. Yes, but I'll need to find a couple more ingredients first. She admitted, looking around for inspiration. The glowworm eagerly fluttered his wings and volunteered to help find whatever she needed. Wizzily racked her brain. She was sure that she had watched her aunts cast a spell to create light in the darkness before. It might just work on Sir Peter's tail too. She recalled thinking at the time that it was a surprisingly simple and effective spell. She could just about remember the incantation, although she might have to make a few changes to suit the little glowworm's plight. If she recalled correctly, she would need just three ingredients to make the spell work. She would need bottled moonbeam, butterfly dust and something to add colour. Luckily she already had some butterfly dust to hand. The only extra ingredients she needed were some bottled moonbeam and something colourful. First she had to find out what colour Peter Worm would like to glow. She turned to the glowworm and suggested, I assume that you would like to glow bright green like your tail already does. However, the glowworm shook his head and proclaimed that he would like to glow bright a lilac purple. It was Ileana's favourite colour. If Sir Peter could glow the colour lilac, then there would be no way she wouldn't notice him. Wizzily smiled and announced, all right then, Lila it is. But first we need to work out where to get some bottled moonbeam from. It would take too long to go to the shop and come back again, so instead she and Sir Peter would have to improvise. Wizzily had a small glass vial in her pocket with a cork top that they could use to trap some moonbeams in. The key to capturing good quality moonbeam was getting as close to the moon as possible and dipping the vial into a radiant ray of moonlight. Tonight was a waxing gibbous moon, which meant that it was 3/4 full. A full moon would be better, but tonight's moon would have to do. Wizzily inspected the sun in the sky and calculated that they still had a couple of hours to wait until sunset. As soon as the sun disappeared for the night and the moon came out, she could attempt to gather some moonbeams. In the meantime, they would have to wait patiently while they waited for night to fall. Wizzily and Sir Peter lay down in the bee balm clearing and watched the sun as it made its way through the sky towards sunset. Sir Peter told Wizzily how each night the glowworms would all congregate in the nearby meadow to watch the stars in the sky. He admitted that every night he made a wish on the brightest star and wished for Ileana the Glowworm to fall in love with him. Tonight's meeting in the meadow would be the perfect opportunity for Wizzily to test out the light spell and hopefully make Sir Peter's wish come true. Wizardy wondered why Sir Peter had never tried simply introducing himself to Ileana the Glowworm before. Surely she wouldn't mind if he didn't glow as brightly as her. But Sir Peter explained that it didn't work that way with glowworms. Being the boldest and brightest was the only way to get noticed. This is the only way I have a chance of Liana noticing me. Sir Peter sighed. If your spell doesn't work, then I don't know what I'll do. Wizzily could see that Sir Peter needed a good, good dose of self confidence. Surely Liliana could look past a bright tail to see the heart of gold he possessed inside. Wizzily encouraged him. Sir Peter, she said, you are a kind, friendly, hard working little glowworm. You clearly care deeply about Ileana. You need to believe in yourself more. You are more than good enough for this pretty glow worm you like. All she needs is a chance to get to know you. As soon as that happens, I'm sure she will be just as crazy about you too. Sir Peter smiled shyly and thanked Wizzily for her kind words of encouragement. Then he mischievously added, and if that all fails, maybe you could whip me up a love potion to give her. Wizzily laughed and advised the little glowworm that it didn't work that way. You couldn't make someone like you. It was much better to stick to people who love you for who you are. When night eventually fell, it was time to enact the next part of their plan. As the moon came out and shone down upon the earth, Wizzily climbed up into a tree to get as close to the sky as possible. Sir Peter Worm flew by her side and watched on as she uncorked the glass vial and held it up towards the moonlight. She strained to dip the vial into the moonlight, but she couldn't quite reach it. The moon was just too far away. Wizzly tried and tried. She stretched and stretched, but it was no use. If only I had a broomstick. Wizzly sighed as she slumped back into the tree. Then I would be able to get as close as I wanted to the moon. Sir Peter sighed, disappointed that they were so close and yet too far from getting the most important ingredient for the spell. After a few moments, Sir Peter had an epiphany. Wait a minute, he muttered. I can fly. I could fly closer to the moon with the bottle and fill it up with Moonbeam. Wizzily smiled with realisation. Of course. Why hadn't she thought of that in the first place? Are you sure you'll be able to carry it? Wizzly checked. The bottle is the same size as you are. It might be too heavy. Sir Peter flitted his wings and rose up into the air. There's only one way to find out, he said determinedly. The eager glowworm took the glass vial from Wizzily's hand and flew up into the air. The bottle was quite heavy for the little glowworm, but it was nothing he couldn't handle. He flapped his wings extra hard and held on with all his might, flying closer and closer to a ray of moonlight. As he reached the misty ray, moonlight flowed over his body and his bioluminescent behind instinctively began to flicker. He held the glass bottle at an angle and allowed silvery white moonbeam to trickle into it. Wizzily told him to make sure that the bottle was filled to the brim before bringing it back down to her. The little glowworm did as he was asked, and only when the vial was full did he fly back to Wizzily. He handed over the bottle and she put the cork back in the lid, storing the ingredients safely inside. She inspected the bottled moonbeam and admired how the misty white liquid smoke danced around inside the vial. It was perfect. Good job, Sir Peter. She congratulated him and the glowworm smiled proudly. Now all that was left to do was head to the meadow where the glowworms gathered to watch the night sky. Glowworms love to stargaze, and the moon's light energizes them and helps their bodies to beam brighter. When Sir Peter and Wizzily arrived at the meadow, there were already dozens of glowworms in attendance. Wizzily ducked behind a bush, staying out of sight so that she could cast her spell in secret. Wizzily instructed Sir Peter, you go ahead and join the crowd and I will cast my spell from here. I can't promise it will work, but I will do my best. Sir Peter smiled with gratitude and replied, I have faith in you, Wizzly witch, I have no doubt that your powerful magic will make my wish come true. Wizzily watched from the sidelines as Sir Peter Worm made his way towards the group of glowworms that had gathered in the meadow. Just like Sir Peter had said, the female glowworms shone gloriously bright. Their shining bottoms lit up the meadow like the stars in the sky. Wizzily wondered which one of them was Sir Peter's beloved Ileana. They all looked the same to her, but to him there was only Ileana. The young witch took a deep breath and steadied herself. She really wanted to get this right for the loved up little guy. She picked a couple of petals of purple bee balm out of her bag and rubbed them between her palms, crumbling them into tiny pieces. She rubbed her hands together until her palms were stained a purple colour. Then she picked up a pinch of butterfly dust and blew it over onto St. Peter Worm's back. His ribbed body started to twinkle with the glimmer of butterfly wing dust. Finally, it was time for the most important part of the process, the incantation. Wizzily uncorked the bottle of Moonbeam and watched as the gentle tendrils of Moonbeam smoke wafted up out of the top. She pulled her magic wand from out of her cloak pocket and waved it above the bottle of Moonbeam. As she whispered the incantation, she hoped that she had recalled it correctly. She chanted, little glowworm with heart so true, hear my magical spell for you. May the moon give you power to shine so bright. Let radiant lilac light up the night. Wizzily watched as the bottled moonbeam bubbled on cue, starting to glow brighter and turn lilac purple in colour. She looked over to Sir Peter Worm and tipped over the bottle, allowing the moonbeam to pour out and float through the air over to the hopeful little glowworm. The bubbling, captured moonbeam landed on Sir Peter and wrapped itself around his body. Instantly, his whole body began to glow with a dazzling, luminous lilac light. The spell had worked. All of the glowworms around him were amazed to see him glowing so splendidly. But most importantly, Ileana noticed him. Sir Peter beamed from ear to ear and fluttered his wings to propel himself up into the air, showing off his unique gleaming colour to everyone around. He twirled and whirled in the air, putting on quite the show for all to see. The other glow worms observed and admired him in awe and Wizzily laughed and grinned from her secret hiding place, delighted that her spell had worked. Eventually, Sir Peter returned to earth and the other glowworms applauded him. As Sir Peter was taking a bow, Ileana crawled over to him, her own green bioluminescence beaming bright. She gazed at Sir Peter with admiration and said, wow. I've never seen a glowworm like you before. Who are you? Sir Peter stuttered. I'm Sir Peter and you are Ileana. Ileana giggled and replied, yes, I am. Did you know lilac is my favourite colour? Sir Peter blushed as he admitted that he did in fact know that in fact it was for her that he had chosen the colour. Ileana smiled and asked him if he would like to watch for shooting stars with her. Sir Peter could hardly believe his luck and he nodded his head, unable to speak. Ileana led the way over to a spot in the meadow where they could watch the night sky and get to know each other. But before he followed her, Sir Peter looked back to Wizzily hiding in the bush and gave her a big wave. He mouthed the words thank you before following his beloved Ileana into the meadow. As the night continued, Sir Peter's glow dampened and darkened to his usual dim flicker. Sir Peter sighed as he saw the light fade. It looked like the spell had worn off. His magical night was as he thanked Ileana for her time and began to walk away, she called him back. Sir Peter told her that now his glow was gone, he wouldn't bother her any longer, but that he was grateful to her for noticing him when he glowed. He said that this had been the most wonderful night of his life. Ileana smiled kindly and called him a silly sausage, telling him that she didn't care that his glow was gone. By doing something special just for her, he'd shown her the light within his heart and that counted much, much more than anything he could show her on the outside. In fact, she liked him just the way he was. Wizzily wiped a tear from the corner of her eye as she watched the loved up glowworms embrace. She was thrilled that her spell had worked just as she had wanted and showed Sir Peter that all he needed to do was show Ileana how much she meant to him. It was never really anything to do with his glow at all. She grinned. Maybe she would make a good witch. When Wizardy returned home to her aunt's magic shop, she walked through the door yawning and stretching. She was home later than she had anticipated. Her aunts, Drusilla and Portia, were already sitting at the wooden circular table in the middle of the shop, drinking their evening cups of hot cocoa. You took a while Aunt Drusilla commented as Wizzily hung up her cloak and hat on the hooks by the door. Where have you been? Wizzily slunk into a spare chair at the table and slumped with exhaustion as she explained that she had been helping someone. A little glowworm, to be exact. Then, on her way home, she realized that she still needed to collect some valerian root and had taken a detour to ensure she had all the ingredients her aunt wanted before she returned. Aunt Portia poured Wizzily a mug of hot cocoa and passed it across the table to her. It sounds like you had a productive day. Portia smiled. Now drink this and get yourself to bed. We can restock the shelves in the morning. Wizzily took her cup of hot cocoa and snipped the chocolatey fumes. She yawned and stood up to take it up to bed. Just as she was about to leave the room, Aunt Drusilla asked, was the little glowworm grateful for your help? Wizzily looked back at her aunt and replied with a sleepy smile, oh, yes. He was very grateful. Then, with a yawn, Wizzily said, good night and retreated to her bed. Sam.
