But, you know, it's good that my mom or even my dad will go there and like, check me and be like, at the end of the day, this is what matters, though.

Okay, a little long, but just bear with me. My partner and I dined out at this Italian restaurant we've been to several times. It's not highly sophisticated, but pleasant enough that you get to sit down, order wine, have a relaxing evening. You know, the usual. Our server, let's name her Samantha, fake name, was kind of phased throughout. She lost my drink twice. She served the wrong starter, and she vanished for what seemed like an eternity. When it was, when it arrived, time to order dessert, it wasn't the end of the world. I've worked customer service myself and I get that hectic nights go wild. However, service was really poor. When the tech came, I paid and left a $10, 10% cash tip. Not excessive, but not nothing either. And I thought it was reasonable given the circumstances.

We were just standing up to leave when Samantha came over, took the cash and said, seriously, this is it. And she said it audibly. A few people at some nearby tables turned around and stared. I was taken aback.

I didn't even know what to say first. Then she added, you know, servers can't pay their rent because of people like you, if you can't tip properly, don't dine out. The restaurant became totally silent, like sitcom silence. My girlfriend was wincing. I just remained calm and said, okay, I'm sorry you feel that way, and started to leave. Then, no kidding, she muttered, whatever. Cheap steaks. Long enough, loud enough that it was not only for us. So I went back over, walked to the table, took the tip, and left without another word. My girlfriend later informed me that I was. I did fine with it. But one of my friends feels like I had overstepped by insisting on getting the tip back. That no matter what, you just leave it and move on. I feel like to be scolded and humiliated on account of a 10% tip that I actually did leave is way out of bounds. So am I the asshole?

You giving them the 10 tip, I feel like that was your way of being like, okay, look, I'm not going to leave you nothing. But that wasn't the best experience.

That's what I was going to say, yeah, because I was going to, I was going to justify the people that, that don't tip. I was going to justify them because I was like, maybe some people are in a financial bind that they can't afford. But I personally was always taught if you can't go out, if you can't tip, when you go out to eat, don't go out to eat. That's the way I was taught. But I don't know, I understand that that's not the same rules for everybody.

But also that's fair. If you expect to tip, that person should also expect to have good service.

You know, that's the whole point why you go to a sit down restaurant is because you will get wind and dined.

You know, just going back to that whole concept that I got taught wasn't even like, it was probably like some rant. I don't remember who taught me that, but like it was in my mom because I want to make sure like, like that whole premise of like if you can't afford a tip, don't go out to eat, that, that kind of says a lot about our culture. It's like you're expect going back to what you're saying, like you're expecting to like tip. But I think it just goes back to like, sure, our culture is like tipping, but at the same time we as a customers should be able to determine how much we want to tip.

And that should be the bottom line.

And the guy was awesome. Yeah, he just gave me two beers. That's it. That's his job. You know, he checks people out, he gives people food. That's, that's his job. And you know, everything that you do, it says, oh, you fill this out 10, 15, 20%. Yeah, the first one or two, like I'll just put like 15.

Because you know, I know it goes a long way at the end of the day, but it's crazy because like there's other people that they can probably just afford that 20 beer. So it's like to add that on every single checkout, it's kind of crazy.

Let's say I'm like, just checking out and like, a situation like that for, like, a beer. Maybe for, like, the last one, I just won't. Because I'm like, bro, I already tipped you, like, 20 out of the other ones. So it's like I. But then I feel bad. That's my point. But then I'm like, I just left that guy. No tip for that one beer, even though I've bought.
