So I was raised by a single mom, born in Mexico. She came to the United States, immigrated here. And my mom is the most driven, passionate, hard working person I know. And that's where I've, like, gained a lot of my qualities from. Who was that person for you? Like, where did you get this from?

My dad. I'm second generation. Okay. My grandparents came over from. From what was Russia or whatever back then.

[Mark Cuban]

Yeah.

[Sebastian Robles]

Come here. My. My mom and my dad were first generation, and my dad never went to college. Neither of them went to college. Dad did upholstery on cars. So, like, you got a real.

[Josh Leva]

Wow, that's talent.

Yeah, that. No, it takes.

Yeah.

Real. Right. My mom just did odd jobs. Dad never made more than 40 grand in his life. And, like, he was like, I don't want you to do the same thing. And he used to bring me to where he worked and give me a broom and, like, you're gonna make five bucks sweeping all day. And the whole point was he wanted me to know this shit's hard.

[Josh Leva]

Yeah.

[Sebastian Robles]

You don't want to be doing this work your whole life. And I. He wanted me to just look for bigger and better.

[Mark Cuban]

Yeah.

And he just got me in that mindset to say, like, why not me?

Why not me? Why can't I be the one in my family that goes to college? Why can't I be the one in my family that starts a business? Right. No, you. You lived it, right?

My mom would tell me, mark, if it's up to B, it's up to me. She would always put that in my head.

Yes. Like, because you get that feeling. Right. Even when you're a kid.

Right. You know, and I played sports and I did this and I did that. But my friends were just going to school.

I was like, starting businesses. I was like, you guys will relate to this. So I went from selling trash bags until then I got hired for a candy crew.

And then I went graduated from that to taking kids around. I would get my brothers in the car and take them around. But you learn. You learn how to sell. Then I was selling Magazines door to door. Like, if you can sell magazines door to door, it's like, hi, my name is Mark.

Yeah.

Would your husband be upset if you spent $2 a week on the entertainment, enjoyment of your family? And then you'd have all the responses and everything and just like. Like, you just. You just get confidence from that.

[Mark Cuban]

Yeah, Just a constant rejection. Like, that just built thick skin. Yeah.

[Sebastian Robles]

You get that mindset. Every note gets me closer to a yes.

Yeah. So that's. That's how I got rolling.

Incredible. Incredible. Mark, I want to know. So we were just talking about how you enjoy going to dive bars, stuff like that. We won't say which ones, because then you'll find them there. So I went and got a shot, and that helped for a while, but now I had to go back and get an mri. I'm getting an MRI next week.

My doc. I just got X ray, so my doc says it's bone on bone. Oh, yeah.

So Is that, like, could they do, like, stem cell or something?

That's what they're talking about. I want to see all my options are. We'll see how bad it is. But, like. Because then, like, I can't curl and it's like. Yeah, you know, because it's right there.

Right? And I'm like, yeah, I take this cardio fitness class. Cardio lift class. And I didn't talk about the who. Who the instructor was. And so when I went back to class, he's like.

Because that's how you can control your own time. Like, that's. You got a pilot and it's just like, dang. Oh, let's just go somewhere.

It's got a jet.

Yeah. So, Pluto, like, after a little bit of time, that jet needs to be repaired, Right. And so they. They do it. So, like, the way the warranty works and everything, they want you to upgrade to the next one.

And so I was like, okay, I'm gonna keep the old one for parts.

When I sold my first company, I used to wear a watch because I had to be like someone else Time. And, you know, I had it for seven, eight years. Seven years without taking a vacation. Wow. And, you know, you always had to be on someone else's time because you're selling, you're doing deals, you got meetings and all this other ship, the day I sold it, I sold it to H and R Block. And I got rid of my watch. Now I got an iWatch, but I got rid of my watch because I said I don't want to ever have to worry about someone else's time. I want them to have to come to my time.

And that's the way I've kind of lived it ever since.

Damn. What was the first company?

[Sebastian Robles]

It's called Microsolutions.

So I was Got to Dallas. I went to Indiana University. I had some buddies move down to Dallas.

And they're like, you got to come down here. Yeah. I'm like, why? They're like the weather. Right. Compared to Indiana. Grew up in Pittsburgh. The economy's good. Right. You probably get a job. Women are hot as. Let's go. Yeah. Dallas. Yeah. And so I went down there and I didn't have a place to live, didn't have a job. Got a job as a bartender slash bar back and.

Sorry, how old were you at this point? Like timeline? Just 23. 23. Oh, okay, sure.

[Sebastian Robles]

23, 24. Yeah. And got a job as a bartender initially, but I was in an apartment that had a three bedroom apartment with five roommates, and I was the last one in. So I got the floor. I got the floor. I had my, like, I had a Fiat X19 that had a hole in the floorboard. So, like, you see it, you know, and had to put the. The oil in every 60 miles.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

So got that rolling and then looking for a job, Got a job, did an interview, got a job at this software store. And they're like. It was called your business software. And they're like, okay, here's your dude, here's what you do. And I'm like, okay, I can sell. I can sell anything. So I learned it all and I started rolling, right? Started doing okay. And then one day, I needed this big sale that I had closed, and I called my boss, I named Michael, and I'm like, look, I can't come in to open the store because my job was to sweep the floor, wipe the window.

All the ships, typical retail. And I'm like, but I got the sale, right? It's 15 grand, and I make 10% commission. So I'm gonna make 1500 bucks, which lets me move out of this that I lived in. But he goes, no. The guy goes, no, I want you in the store.

Yeah. I'm like, Michael, like, this is a big fucking. Yeah. So I make the executive decision to go get the check. Come back, fires my ass.

Fires me on the spot. So I'm like, I'm a lousy ass employee. So that's why I started this company. Literally sleeping on the floor, eating mustard and catching sandwiches. And like, you guys could probably relate to this. Like, you know, we take 20 bucks and go out and drink and everything.

And we knew how to time it so that we get to the Kroger's. No that was Tom Thumb right by where we live with all these dudes. And at 2 in the morning, they would roll over the chicken prices so that it would went from like 5.99 to a dollar. And you got the big piece of chicken with two, like, different. But you know, that. That's how we lived, you know? And then it started to kick it. Click, right? And so what we did was I taught myself how to write software, and I would go to small businesses and.

I'd be like, okay, just not sh. Teach yourself how to write some time.

[Sebastian Robles]

But, you know, you got to do. They didn't have chat GPT at the time, bro. Right.

You really had to learn that.

I was only three weeks away from chat GPT, but it's just like, you had to learn how to mix and all do this. You got to learn it, right? You know, and if you. And if you're motivated, you'll learn it.

And so I taught myself all this stuff, and one by one, I started adding customers. Literally my first customer.

We called architectural lighter. And I'm like, look, I'm sleeping on the floor. I got no money. But I know the software you need, and it's 500 bucks if you put up the money for me, right. I promise I'll make it work. And if it doesn't work, I'll walk your dog, I'll wash your car, whatever.

Yeah, we'll figure it out.

Whatever it takes to make it work. And that led to another customer and another customer and another customer. Seven years without a vacation. Eight years in. I sold it. I sold it to H R block. I got 6 million bucks for the company. Yeah. Which was for me, like, 29. Absolutely.

How old were you, Mark? At this time?

[Sebastian Robles]

29. Yeah.

And so I'm like, oh, you know, this is. This is it, right? Yeah. So I ended up with 2 million after taxes, and then I gave a million to our employees. So I had 80 employees. So they. They all came out okay. That's my. I think that's just the right thing to do, Right. I do it with all my businesses. But the best part was, right, so got to go out and celebrate.

So I go out and celebrate with my guys, and we go to this old school Italian restaurant, you know, and we went there. Godfather.

I call American Airlines because that's who I always flown them. And I'm like, do you guys have. I don't up. And I'm like, do you guys have lifetime passes? And they're like, sure. I'm like, what? That's what I said.

Because I flew so much.

I was like, there has to be.

So I sold this company and then I traded stocks, did a bunch of. Came to la, lived up in. First to Manhattan beach and then Hollywood Hills, right next to Keanu Reef. Took acting classes. Yeah, took acting classes just so I can meet women. And.

I imagine, like you meeting Mark when he was single.

[Mark Cuban]

Yeah.

Oh, no. Back in the day. Right. I mean, I thought I had game.

But meeting women at acting class is actually a good move. Yeah, it's smart. It's smart.

So it Worked out really fun. And. And then I went back to Dallas for a girl I was dating and one of my buddies from college, Todd Wagner, we were having lunch one day and he goes, look, this is, this is 1995, 94. And he's like, this new Internet thing, we've got to be. There's got to be a way to listen to Indiana basketball on the Internet in Dallas because you couldn't do it otherwise. It's not like today. And I'm like, oh. And I had this technology background. Let me figure it out.

That you learned on your own.

[Sebastian Robles]

But I learned on my own. Yeah, this whole. All this shit. So, okay, so I buy a Packard Bell computer and in the second bedroom, my house, I started trying to figure this whole thing out. And the Internet, well, the Internet, but before streaming, like got it, like how to get it, how to do audio on the Internet. Like nobody had done audio on the Internet.

What?

[Sebastian Robles]

What? Yeah. And so I started this company called audionet.com and I set up this webpage and I started going to local radio stations and I'm like, let me take, you know, your radio signal and put it on an eight hour vcr. I'm going to put it on my computer and then on the site audionet people are going to be able to go from anywhere they are and listen to it. Like listen to the fucking radio. What do you mean that shit, right? Yeah, but I'm like, you don't understand, like people outside of Dallas that want stuff from Dallas, this will be the only way they can listen to it. They're like, all right, we'll give it to you for free. And so one radio station, then another radio station and it was all on demand. And a podcast like thing wasn't called podcast back then. And then we started do another one. Then live came along, we started doing live and then we started going and we were like YouTube. Before YouTube. Yeah, we were like the first. We literally were the first streaming company.

For real, like how were you guys monetizing? Well, just through like ads.

[Sebastian Robles]

So initially my goal was going to be like Amazon was the thing back then just getting started. I'm like, I'm gonna go to Amazon and I'm gonna make it like music, background music to make you shop for more. That didn't work. And then all of a sudden like what we started doing was taking ads and putting them right up front and at the front of the. The stream. Got it right. So just intro stream. Yeah, they do now. But back then that was like, what the Hell is this? And so Dennis kept on growing and growing. We went public in 1998. It was the biggest first day jump in the history of the stock market at the time. And then we were worth, you know, a couple billion dollars at the time. And then Yahoo came along, if you remember that company. They came along and offer us $5.7 billion in stock.

Oh my God.

[Sebastian Robles]

I said yes.

[Mark Cuban]

Dude, that isn't. What does that feel like, Mark? What is that? Like is. Is it? Oh, like what is that?

So there's two parts to that, right? So there's two parts. So like when our stock price was going up, like literally today, I realized I was a billionaire. Because I'm not gonna lie, like when you're getting close.

Yeah.

It's like when you become a millionaire for the first time, you get that hundred thousand dollars in the bank.

It's just special.

So like the, the stock market rolls over and I'm like, I'm worth a billion dollars and I just woken up and I was naked as a jaybird and I'm doing my little naked big billionaire dance, like, because it was just like such a moment. But then when we, we sold the company to Yahoo, it was in stock, right? And like I'm thinking, if this stock market crashes, if this Internet bubble burst, it's all done. All this just paper, it's worth nothing. Nothing. So I took every penny that I had, 20 some million dollars that I had for all those companies, and did this thing called a hedge, which is I went short on this index that I was allowed to do just in case the stock market.

Okay, Right.

So that protected me there. And when that didn't happen, then I was able to do this thing called a caller, where I can sell calls, you know, sell off the outside and protect my downside.

So that's what I did. And then when the Internet stock market crashed, I actually made more money.

It was called one of the top 10 trades of all time. I was like. Because like, how much money did I need? So anyways, that, that's how the whole thing came with Broadcast.com and.

I'm like, oh, crazy.

And so were you by yourself or you had other friends with.

And I land. I get home, I email them back. I want to buy it, but. But I want to buy it online because I want to, like, make that point that it's an Internet thing.

He actually introduced three years ago.

Three years ago, he introduced on one of my episodes when he wasn't part of. But he was just, like, my reoccurring guest all the time, my best friend. So it's just amazing to see it all blow up. Him talking about projecting 25 mil, blah, blah. And it's. It's. It's incredible to see it all. You know, that's the thing about entrepreneurship.

Okay. That's one of the reasons I'm working with Kamala. Right. Because, like, she's got these programs. When you start a business, when you come up, it's scary, and you've got to go out and get help.

Because your life is on the line. You know, we all. That's what makes this country so special, because we all have that dream. Right. Where you get that idea and you're ready to roll. And what I've worked with her on this stuff. Like, what she's saying is that those startup costs, the lawyers, the accountants, this.
