So you're, you're a young guy. How, how did you get into bull writing?

[David Perea]

Well, it started off as a joke. My dad's old shop, rodeo owner. We real good friends with Shane Burris Burst and Sons bucking bulls. He came by the shop to hand out a flyer and goes, hey, let's. Let's put David on a sheep. Dad said, okay. Well, started off as a joke. That's not that much of a joke anymore. Now it's a. Now it's a life thing.

[Jeremy Odom]

Yeah. So it's. So it's never, you know, oh, I want to ride bulls. Or is it you're working on a farm and you end up riding bulls? I mean, is that kind of how it goes down?

[David Perea]

Kinda. It's. There's some days where it's like that. There's some days where it's eating at you. Like I've always been told, it's like a drug. Once you, once you start it, there ain't no quit. And if you try to quit it, give it a month, you're going to be right Back to where you were.

[Jeremy Odom]

Yeah. Kind of like being on stage and hearing those people laugh, Eddie. I mean, I know you miss it. All right, we'll stay.

Okay. I've heard that you started when I

was three, went to six, and then. Well, I went to five, and when I was six, started getting on calves and steers and. And bigger bowls.

At what. What point in your age did you first get on a bowl?

[David Perea]

On a real one, I would have been eight.

So eight years old, you're riding the bull for the first time. You're, I would assume, being thrown off of them left and right at first. Right.

[David Perea]

Yeah.

Still to this day, how, as a guy who just fell off a skateboard a couple weeks ago, and I'm still in massive pain, how do you Deal with it.

[David Perea]

Painkillers, those are some of your best friends. Like, there's days where we're back to. Back to back. You get hurt the second day in a week run, and you're like, you can't. There's no backing out of it. You're already there the next day, and it's. It's. You got to push through it and make that money.

[Jeremy Odom]

I didn't expect that answer, but I love it. But I love it.

[David Perea]

The amount of painkillers I have from how many hospitals I've been in, I always tell everybody. I was like, I know my way in the hospital. I said, don't ask me how it is around it on the outside. Because almost every time I'm in the hospital, going in, more than likely knocked out.

[Jeremy Odom]

Oh, yeah. And that's. How often does that happen?

[David Perea]

More often than I'd like. It's.

[Jeremy Odom]

So how many concussions have you. Have you had or do you think you've had?

[Paul Heymon]

Are you a doctor?

[Jeremy Odom]

Yeah. We're getting into the deep end of this. Yeah.

[David Perea]

Since I've been riding, I've been at around 11, 12.

[Jeremy Odom]

11 or 12. So. And you're. Do you worry about, like, CTE or any. Any of, like, the. The brain stuff, or is that just. That's fake news?

[David Perea]

Yeah, I don't really worry about that.

[Jeremy Odom]

Yeah. And probably nobody in your business worries about that, right?

[David Perea]

No, they're all riding bulls. I don't think there's much of a brain left anyway. If we choose that lifestyle.

[Jeremy Odom]

What injury would cause you to retire? That's very interesting.

[David Perea]

I don't know.

[Jeremy Odom]

If you couldn't get up. Right? You just couldn't get up on that. Okay. Holy cow, you guys are tough.

[David Perea]

I've been.

[Jeremy Odom]

Can you imagine doing that? No, I'm talking to him. I'm talking to him. I'm just. It's interesting.

[Paul Heymon]

I can't imagine doing that.

There's people here and they're like, what. Why is the Vetti just sitting in the corner? And it's. With good reason. Vetti Lynco is sponsoring David and. And. And basically the summer season. Right. Because. Yeah, before we started recording, and you were saying, kind of the season ends around October, so basically when it starts to get a little colder.

Yes, sir.

Um, so when the season ends, I mean, because obviously when you're in season, you're focused on the job at hand.

[David Perea]

Yes, sir.

But when you get to the off season, I mean, what's that. What's that look like? Is it a lot of training? Is It. Other jobs, I mean, what do you go from there?

[David Perea]

Same thing. Training and work. Here's. This isn't like football, you know, baseball or anything. Quit for a week, go back, and you're still in the same spot you left. It's. You leave for about 2 days, go back on another one.

You'll feel your body's off because it's. It's different. Football, you just worry about legs and your arm muscle to get under people. Bull riding, legs, upper body, abs, chest. You gotta have your head still, you know, It's. Happens fast, though. It's. It's a different type of sport.

[Jeremy Odom]

You ever been on a mechanical bull?

[David Perea]

I have.

[Jeremy Odom]

So how's that relate. Is it pretty similar?

[David Perea]

Not at all.

[Jeremy Odom]

Not at all. Because you always see those girls, you know, that they get on there and they. They can figure out the, you know, the momentum of the mechanical bull.

[Paul Heymon]

What videos you'd be watching.

[Jeremy Odom]

I'm just saying, they come across the timeline. You know, you see that people at the bars. You don't see that he's lying. He sees the videos. So. Yeah. So what's the difference? So is it just much more unpredictable on a real bull then?

[David Perea]

Yeah.

[Jeremy Odom]

Okay. But the forces may be similar.

[Paul Heymon]

Not at all.

[Jeremy Odom]

Okay.

[David Perea]

It's who you tell them guys at the control panel, let him have it. That bull's not gonna go jump in and trying to get you down. He's either gonna go up and down about 4 or 5 inches, or he's gonna spin one way or another. And it's bull riding. You nod your head, that is.

[Jeremy Odom]

Oh, yeah.

[David Perea]

Either that bull's gonna run out of there jumping and kicking, or he's gonna be right there in the latch spinning, or two or three jumps out and they're gonna start spinning on you.

[Jeremy Odom]

Say when. So when the door opens and it's time to hit the middle there and you're going, what. What gets the bull like. Like jumping around like that? Is it literally just because you're on the bull or what's. What's causing that?

[David Perea]

These bulls are bred to buck a bunch of them. You do it without a flank rope, and they'll still buck. Not as good as they will with the flank rope, but yeah, because that flank rope's just like a belt. It goes around. Yeah. And if it's right there in that flank of that bull, they don't like it and it'll. They'll just want to kick it off, and that's what gets them such a high kick.

[Jeremy Odom]

Yeah. Betty was born to buck, too. And he's just been bucking ever since. You got no answer. You got no. No comment yet. You got no comment there. So, yes, Betty, Lynco is sponsoring. My dad got a job. And it was either here? Well, I moved to Florida with my mom for a while and dad moved up here in Florida. There too many people.

Oh, there's a lot of people.

You don't like big crowds?

[David Perea]

No, not at all.

[Jeremy Odom]

But you're you. Your work is literally a big crowd watching you.

Yeah, they don't laugh at me. They don't make fun of me.

I guess they're cheering, right.

It ain't for that long though, either.

There's some.

[Paul Heymon]

That's true if somebody say, hey, go on stage and tell one joke. It's like the same thing. You might not like crowds, but if you go on the stage, tell one joke and that's all you got to do.

[David Perea]

Yeah, like just for work back home. Colorado, we have a cow. Air tag is 9:30. We were feeding. One of our feeders broke, so we had to put bales on a flatbed trailer and pull it around the pen, big old pasture and start doing that. My uncle Mark was driving. My buddy Dennis was in the back just pulling out, flaking, flaking, flaking. These are the big bales. Well, I get off because one of the wires got cut that wrap around the bell. So I cut them. I jumped off and I started pilling them. And I knew 930 was in that pen. And she's. She'll get you one way or another. If you're on the other side of a fence or not she will find a way. So I'm sitting here, I look around, I didn't see her. I start, start getting the twine off the bell. And I hear Dennis yell, watch that cow. Watch that cow. I didn't even bother to look behind me. I booked it so fast. Jumped on that trailer. I look up, my uncle Mark sitting there dying, laughing. And my buddy Dennis is dying laughing. I was like, you guys suck, man. And I can't not believe you because I'm gonna not believe you and I'm gonna get plowed.

[Jeremy Odom]

Have you seen that video? It's going around right now. Just happened like a day or two. This big bison like ran, like chased down this guy. He went like 8ft in the air or something like that. You haven't seen this. I imagine that's what that cow did to you. Yeah, yeah, like that's. As you're telling that story, I'm like, yeah, I bet you got some air time there.

[David Perea]

Oh, sadly no. I just.

[Jeremy Odom]

Sadly, no.

[David Perea]

No. I wish I got air time. That would have given me time to rethink my life decisions.

[Jeremy Odom]

So what time? What, what's your like walk me through a normal day for a rodeo cowboy. What's it start in the morning to? To bed. What's it look like?

[David Perea]

Well, there's a rodeo that day. I'll wake up 5:30, 7:00 clock between one of those and then it's more getting all my stuff gathered, going through my gear bag, making sure I have everything in my bag I need. If I need more tape, if I need rosin or whatever, checking my gear, make sure my gear is all.

[Jeremy Odom]

What would you need tape for?

[David Perea]

So we tape our wrists. Some people tape their knees and all that, but my knee or my wrist is pretty messed up from all these years. And yeah, my whole body is really. But my wrist is my main concern because if it gets pulled out the wrong way, can't have that.

[Jeremy Odom]

I was at a concert Friday night and I fell in the pit and I hurt my wrist so bad. I feel like.

[Paul Heymon]

Why would you in the pit?

[Jeremy Odom]

Oh, I was living in the pit. I. I don't know why you old as. Trust me. See my nose, I'm all bust like, I got bruises all over me. I'm.

[Paul Heymon]

You don't need to be in no pit. You need to be sitting up there with the rest of the old people in handicap set.

[Jeremy Odom]

You sound like my mom. You sound like my mom.

[Paul Heymon]

Paul. That's great. So once you've got the equipment Going, then will you get to, like, let's say Clarinda on the 23rd? Is this something where you roll up that morning, like, super early, or do you. Is it, like a stay of the night so you can kind of get prepared? You get to run? Do you get to actually get in the. In the circle and, like, kind of work through things? Because each one different. I gave you eight questions. I need them all rapid fire answered right now.

[David Perea]

All right? So the only thing that's different about everything is the ground. The ground is the biggest difference. It'll make me sound like a barrel racer, but that's. That's the biggest difference is the ground.

[Jeremy Odom]

And do you get to go out there and kind of work through it so you know you're dealing with.

[David Perea]

Not really. Kind of show up, throw your gear bag on a fence, get everything warmed up, and no sense. You know, your boy, you know what he does, and you know what, you have a job to do. And the only one thing goes through mine is, you better do that job good, or else that's. That's kind of the only way you're getting home.

[Jeremy Odom]

So it is your bowl. So then how often are you, I guess, riding that bull so that you guys are. Are one?

[David Perea]

Basically, it's, oh, so they have a lot of bulls. And so it's more. I show up, I'll go pay my entry fee, and they'll tell me what bull I have. So they pick our bull out. Like, there's. There's a bull he has, and it's a really good bull. Been on that bull four or five times now. And it. Every time it throws something different at me, and it gets me down, man.

[Jeremy Odom]

How many seconds?

[David Perea]

I get about 6, 7 seconds. And then he'll throw something that I'm not expecting, and it just jerks me down.

[Jeremy Odom]

So what's your goal when you go in there? Like, how long are you looking to ride? Or is it just seven seconds? I guess I don't. What's the.

[David Perea]

It's eight seconds, but everybody will always tell you, ride for 10 and hope for 90. Ride for 10 seconds, hope for 90 points.

[Jeremy Odom]

There you go. So. And there's, like, judges out there.

[David Perea]

Yes, sir.

[Jeremy Odom]

How many judges?

[David Perea]

There's two to three of them. Okay, so you'll have one on top of the buck and shoot. And he'll mark them out. So when the shoulder of the bull leaves, then he'll start the timer.

[Jeremy Odom]

Okay.

[David Perea]

And then you have one. Watching the bulls buck, how hard he kicks, how good he spins, and all that Making sure he don't fall. Or if he hits a gate and it stops him and, like, loses momentum from that. And then you have another judge and he's watching you, how good you're moving, controlling yourself, your free arm and all that. Senior. If you're kicking out and spurring over him.

[Jeremy Odom]

I like dancing a little bit, you know, like when they're scoring or figure skating and, you know, or they're scoring the movements and all that stuff. So the. The judges, are they pretty experienced folks that have been a part of rodeos for a long time or could. Like Vettie and I like, judge.

[David Perea]

No, they've been a part of this port of rodeo for a long time.

[Paul Heymon]

I don't even know what I'm looking for, man.

[Jeremy Odom]

Well, we could be taught.

[Paul Heymon]

You acting weird today, man.

[Jeremy Odom]

Man, this guy. This guy. So where do they come from? Do they come from, like, Clarinda? You know, the area of Clarinda, like, at the. That one, the judges would be. Or do they come from all over the country? Like, how's that work?

[David Perea]

Honestly, all over. Like, there's two. The two judges I always talk to over there, they're always at every rodeo that's put on, no matter if it's on the other side of Nebraska or in Arkansas. They're.

[Jeremy Odom]

They're the one. They're there.

[David Perea]

They're there.

[Jeremy Odom]

And you go and you, like, shake their hands and just. Yeah, I be polite.

[David Perea]

Yeah, I do that to everybody, though. I'll get there, say hi to everybody I know, and when I leave, I'll go by, shake everybody's hands, jump in my truck and go.

[Jeremy Odom]

Is there, like, some mind games that goes on with you guys? Like when you're. You were saying, you go and you say hi and you're nice to everybody. Is there some people that kind of play it different and try to get in your head a little bit, or is that. Is there a game within the game? I guess.

[David Perea]

No, not really. Everybody's there is already in their own head. There's. You could ask any bull rider if they're scared every time they get on a bull. And if they tell you no, they're lying straight to you. Yeah, there's always that little piece in your head saying, this could either be the last time I do this or I'm gonna get the living hell kicked out of me.

[Jeremy Odom]

And when did you come to terms with. With that line right there?

[Paul Heymon]

The.

[Jeremy Odom]

This could be the last time I ever do this? Or. I mean, how do you deal with that?

[David Perea]

It's always been There, you know, it's that animals 10 times stronger than you, 10 times bigger than you. You know, one wrong move, you end up by his head. He's knocking you out, end up under him. He's stepping you, pulling your lungs in, breaking your ribs, breaking your neck. So it's a dangerous thing.

[Jeremy Odom]

It is dangerous. So David Perea, and you're going to see him July 23rd and Clarinda and July 24th in Atlantic. And then you can find like a full list of where you'll be all summer, basically released through. It looked like beginning of August. So on the 22nd of July in Clarenda, there is a community event and there's various things going on. I know you said you don't know, like, all the details of everything going on at this community event, but you can meet some of the cowboys and there's photos, autographs and whatnot. And it sounds like you may be there. One of the things that they're advertising that I feel is maybe going to be a problem. I mean, I think we need to really get involved in this is one of the things they're promoting is sit on a real bucking bull. That doesn't sound like something just anybody should be doing. Right? I mean, do you want to do this vet? You want to get on a. There's gonna be kids rolling up, wanting to sit on the bowl. Is this normal?

[David Perea]

Yeah.

[Jeremy Odom]

Oh, my God.

They put on.

Usually I just posted in there about mechanic because my car broke now, but it was, you know, usually people post stuff like that. We need somebody clean something. We need somebody to. So I seen his post and it was like, hey, guys, want to work? And, and I need a sponsor, you know, you know, for rodeo. But it was like that same week, and I'm like, ah, that's a little too close. I could try it. But, yeah, that's a little too close. So I still reached out, and then, you know, I thought it was a little too close for the date, so I was like, I'll try to reach out another day. But by the time he did that, he was like, man, I already got some sponsors, man. You. I was like, damn, man.

He came at you? Yeah, I believe it.

He picks me up, he's driving off as we go to Waffle House with my other best friend because they came and met because I haven't seen either one of them. And the lady brings over some orange juice and we're up here talking, and my brother's like, yeah, man, I'm so glad you're here. It's like so nonchalant. Just poor vodka at a Waffle House. Just. And I was like, what the. I said, who? Driving me back to the airport, man.

And then when it comes off season, then I'm pulling up every video, every rotor from that year, and I'm on a stationary barrel, drop barrel in the gym, just doing work to get muscle memory built up. Because when you. When you nod your head, there's no thinking about nothing. You nod your head, my hand. My mind goes clear, and everybody's. Why'd you. Why'd you do that? I was like, I don't even know what I did. All I know is I tried to sit in the middle of him. I kept my hand shut.
