Josh Gad
I went in and after two weeks, I came in with one pitch and it was for a company called 1-800-Tlemattress. Having trouble sleeping. Tell a mattress. And the guy looked at me and goes, this is not gonna work for us.
Kelly Ripa
Somebody gonna cue me or do I cue myself? Cue yourself. Okay. Hey, guys, we're back with another let's talk off camera. So let's get talking. Oh, boy. Back by popular demand. Backed by popular demand, We've had so much fun with our rapid fire questions with our guests. We've got Bob Iger. He called it the lightning round. That's what we thought we'd bring you today, some more lightning round questions like who was your childhood celebrity crush? Or what was your first paying job? Or even what is your go to karaoke song? Stick around. Because Josh Gad, Elana Glaser and Colman Domingo do not disappoint. But before we get to that, Jan Albert, what say you to that?
Mark Consuelos
So I recently this weekend traveled with your husband to Italy and back.
Kelly Ripa
I'm sorry for loss of your time.
Mark Consuelos
So aside from the nine hours that we were at the airport beforehand, we sat in the lounge and first of all, sitting with him in the lounge, of course, anything that could have been put in front of him, it was a tray of dirty dishes that got put right in front of Mark.
Kelly Ripa
A tray of dirty dishes.
Mark Consuelos
There was a line of people and he does doing the.
Kelly Ripa
Well, that's the amazing thing is that he will force you to get to the airport, 19 hours before a flight takes off. And then is some somehow irritated with you? Yes, that's the magic of March.
Mark Consuelos
So we're sitting there and it was like that. We said we weren't boarding until 8:50 and it was like 8:30 in the morning. And Grant's eating a yogurt with like berries and almonds.
Kelly Ripa
Where did he find that?
Mark Consuelos
That was on the. On the table. And then next thing we hear in Italian, Delta Airlines, jfk. Mark shoots him out of his seat, grabs the rolling.
Kelly Ripa
Cause he understood it in Italian first.
Mark Consuelos
So he grabs the rolly bag and is gone.
Kelly Ripa
Now you're it.
Mark Consuelos
Now I get up and I took all my stuff. I start racing out the door. And I turn around and Grant's got a spoon in his mouth, like swallowing yogurt. I'm like, grant, you good. I chase after Mark.
Kelly Ripa
Wait, so he left you just like you.
Mark Consuelos
We left me and we left Grant. The gate was right across from the lounge where we're sitting. We get to the gate, and now it's zone one through four as there's the sign. And we see some guy at the. At the thing, like starting to mention, but he's leaning in. Mark can't hear him, but Mark assumes that he's saying he could board. So Mark starts to walk on the plane, and then some man says, excuse me, we're not boarding. And then sends Mark all the way back to the front. Oh, cool. U.S. military and everyone. Now the U.S. military are going on. I liken the visual of Mark standing next to the zone 1 through 4 sign to like a horse at the Kentucky Derby behind the gates.
Kelly Ripa
That's correct.
Mark Consuelos
Ready to go. Finally, they let other people pre board and he's like twitching at this point. I took a picture of him at the gate.
Kelly Ripa
Little old ladies. Oh, it drives me.
Mark Consuelos
Now boarding, zone one. God, in the jetway. We raced down the jetway, and all of a sudden we're walking downstairs on the end of the jetway and I realized, oh, there's a bus that takes you to. To the plane?
Kelly Ripa
No.
Mark Consuelos
So we get on the bus, the go to take the bus to the plane. And I realize now the bus is full of people. All these people that pre boarded, and it's now filling up with all the people that were on.
Kelly Ripa
He must have been incensed.
Mark Consuelos
Then he looks at me and he says, what side do you think the doors are gonna open when we get to the plane? I said, well, it's usually the same side that you enter from, so it's probably this Side. The bus drives around and it's zigzagging, and I'm praying to God, oh, my God, please let the doors open up.
Josh Gad
On the right side.
Kelly Ripa
It's Italy, so anything's possible.
Mark Consuelos
The right side of this bus. We p up to the plane, and of course, the doors open on the left side, and we are in the front of the bus, but the plane entrance is in the back of the bus, and we're glued to the right side door. And you know better than anybody, he wants to be first one on that plane. So wait, we start bracing for the steps. He's now cut off, like, three or four people. We're ready to go up the stairs, and all of us. And we're about to get go up, and a man comes over with his wife next to him and says, you know, my wife is going to be mad at me for doing this, but she loves you and your wife and. Can we take a picture?
Josh Gad
What did he do?
Kelly Ripa
What did he do?
Mark Consuelos
Pause. Pauses. And.
Kelly Ripa
Yeah.
Mark Consuelos
To walk with his luggage towards the steps while this man's walking backwards with him trying to take a picture. Everyone else had run up by the time we boarded. Everyone was ready on the plane.
Colman Domingo
I.
Mark Consuelos
It was like I couldn't wait to get home and tell a story.
Kelly Ripa
Please tell me the area where his overhead bag was supposed to go was occupied by somebody else's luggage.
Mark Consuelos
It was empty. It was empty.
Kelly Ripa
Oh, that's a shame.
Mark Consuelos
But at least 35 people got on the plane before us.
Ilana Glazer
That is amazing.
Kelly Ripa
Do you know how that kills him?
Mark Consuelos
Oh, I do.
Kelly Ripa
I just told you. I refuse to fly with him anymore. I won't fly with him.
Mark Consuelos
I thought it was a travel spot.
Kelly Ripa
We need to take separate planes. Okay, let's get to it. Let's start with actor, writer, soon to be director, Josh Gad. You know him from his time on Broadway in the Book of Mormon and Gutenberg the musical.
Josh Gad
And.
Kelly Ripa
And you certainly know him from the movies Frozen, Angry Birds and Beauty and the Beast. And his debut children's book, Picture Face. Lizzie is out now. Josh stuck around for our rapid fire round, so let's play it for you right now. Okay. Childhood celebrity crush, Phoebe Cates. Oh, that's a good. I think that was Marx, too.
Josh Gad
I mean, it's obvious why, but. Yes, Phoebe Cates.
Kelly Ripa
Yes, of course we can all.
Josh Gad
Sorry, Kevin. I'm friends with Kevin Klein, so it's a very uncomfortable thing to ask me because I.
Kelly Ripa
No, he knows. He knows. We all talk about it. What posters did you have on your bedroom wall? Growing up.
Josh Gad
Oh, man, I was a Disney fanatic. So I had posters of my favorite Disney films. Like, this is so embarrassing to say, but Aladdin and Lion King hung on my childhood.
Colman Domingo
Daunting.
Kelly Ripa
That's not embarrassing. Those are. It's like a vision board. Like, it's a vision board.
Josh Gad
It is weird. It's. It strangely became a vision.
Ilana Glazer
It's a vision board.
Josh Gad
But at the time, it was not conducive to getting laid. So I really feel like my son.
Kelly Ripa
This is my son's old bedroom, Clockwork Orange. Oh, that's a cool.
Josh Gad
That's a cool room.
Kelly Ripa
I don't think a girl has ever been in this room, if I'm being honest. Oh, and grab the alligator.
Josh Gad
Oh, yeah.
Kelly Ripa
I mean, the crocodile. You'll know this.
Josh Gad
Oh, I love that. The Peter Pan crocodile.
Kelly Ripa
And it. And it, like, literally.
Colman Domingo
Yeah.
Josh Gad
You know what's happening? My girls now want to get rid of all of their, like, kids stuff. And I'm like, no, don't.
Kelly Ripa
No, don't let them get rid of it. They'll change their mind.
Josh Gad
I know.
Kelly Ripa
It's just gonna tick tock until it wears down. Okay. Did you have a nickname growing up?
Josh Gad
I did. Skippy. I had a teacher named. I had a teacher named Ms. Tobias. And she one day said that I reminded her of Skippy Peanut Butter, which I don't know what the hell that means, but it stuck, and I became class president, and it was Josh. Skippy. Gad. So, everyone, when I go back for my high school reunions, nobody calls me Josh. Everybody still calls me Skippy. And what's so funny is my brother. His nickname in high school was Skippy because he looked like Skippy from. Was it who's a Boss?
Kelly Ripa
Oh, oh, oh. Family Ties.
Josh Gad
Family Ties. Skippy was like Michael's best friend on Family Ties. That's what it was.
Kelly Ripa
Skippy.
Josh Gad
You want to hear what a good father I am? Do you know what my kids favorite shows are? Family Ties, Growing Pains, who's the Boss, Full House. I refuse to let them start with anything modern. We're like. We're going back to the basics, kids.
Kelly Ripa
Yeah, that's smart, though, because that's when. I mean, if I were to show my kids my favorite sitcoms, it would be all in the family. The Jeffersons.
Josh Gad
I tried the 70s stuff.
Kelly Ripa
You know, it's like. It's too. They're like, what is this? Is this from the. Is this from the 1500s? Like, it actually looks weird to them.
Josh Gad
It does. I tried. I even tried showing them, like, Bewitched. I tried showing them, man. We went through a phase where we like desperately kept shoving. What the hell is the name of the show? The Family. The, like the. The. The nuclear family.
Ilana Glazer
Brady Bunch.
Kelly Ripa
Brady Bunch.
Josh Gad
Brady Bunch. Thank you. I tried showing them the Brady Bunch and I can't believe I forgot the words of the Brady Bunch. I tried showing them the Brady Bunch. They just. They did not. They did.
Kelly Ripa
That was the working title. You probably already knew that though. They were going to call it that show about a nuclear family.
Josh Gad
That show about the nuclear family.
Kelly Ripa
It became the Brady Bunch.
Josh Gad
The Brady Bunch is catchier.
Kelly Ripa
Who was your first kiss?
Josh Gad
Her name was Danielle Wontcier. I was about 10 years old and she was a good foot taller than me. And we kissed on the dance floor at Camp Blue Ridge.
Kelly Ripa
Oh, wow.
Ilana Glazer
Camp is where all the first happens.
Kelly Ripa
Yes, exactly. First concert.
Josh Gad
First concert. Dave Matthews Band.
Kelly Ripa
Oh, my gosh, that's crazy. You're so young. First car.
Josh Gad
Oh, God. I had a Honda Civic.
Kelly Ripa
A silver, everybody's first car.
Josh Gad
Honda Civic.
Kelly Ripa
Yeah.
Josh Gad
I love that car. I miss that car. I haven't think about that car.
Kelly Ripa
First paying job I worked as.
Josh Gad
I came up with ads for a local South Florida advertisement firm and I lasted two weeks on the job and my. I went in and after two weeks I came in with one pitch and it was for a company called 1-800-Tlemattress and I literally came back with one pitch which was having trouble sleeping. Telemattress. And the guy looked at me. This is not going to work for us.
Kelly Ripa
That's amazing.
Josh Gad
I took that page.
Kelly Ripa
That's incredible.
Josh Gad
Walked myself out the door.
Kelly Ripa
Go to karaoke song.
Josh Gad
It's crazy, but I love crazy. So it's I Will Always Love youe by Whitney Houston.
Kelly Ripa
Oh, that's amazing.
Josh Gad
And I actually go for it. I actually like. Yeah, I go for it.
Kelly Ripa
I'm sure you do.
Ilana Glazer
Let's hear it.
Kelly Ripa
Chan wants you to put your I'm.
Josh Gad
In my gizmo the office right now. I will literally. People will start being like bob Iger's.
Kelly Ripa
Gonna Dad's dad's auditioning for something again. What's the last thing you texted someone before this interview?
Josh Gad
Oh, that's a good question. Let's see. I'm worried about this. Can't read that one. Oh, okay. It was Adam Pally asking me about a movie and I said yes. We are currently getting a draft into the studio for the film which is expected to potentially shoot next year. That's the last text was Adam Pally.
Kelly Ripa
It's the most Hollywood text ever.
Ilana Glazer
Which movie would that be?
Josh Gad
I cannot talk about it.
Kelly Ripa
Jan. He can't talk about it. I'm trying to figure out my last text, and I'm gonna look it up right now. No, I didn't respond to that. Ah. Did Lauren reach out to you regarding tickets to Wimbledon? To my daughter.
Josh Gad
Our lives are so weird. Stupid.
Kelly Ripa
She did. Was she able to help you? No answer.
Josh Gad
Are you going? Are you going to Wimbledon?
Kelly Ripa
No. My daughter lives in London.
Josh Gad
The agency will get you tickets. Your agency will get you tickets or threaten to leave your agency if they don't.
Kelly Ripa
Hidden talent. I mean, none of his talents are hidden. They're all out in the open.
Ilana Glazer
Maybe he has something else.
Kelly Ripa
Okay. Hidden talent.
Josh Gad
Do I have a hidden talent?
Kelly Ripa
Do you sculpt?
Josh Gad
I do not sculpt. You know what? I actually. This isn't even a hidden talent. This is actually sad to even admit, because I'm sure everybody can make good eggs, but I make really good eggs.
Kelly Ripa
That is a talent.
Josh Gad
I make really excellent breakfast. Like, that is something that I do well.
Kelly Ripa
We'll put you to the test next time you're in New York.
Josh Gad
Quite well. I'm also really good at trivia. I love trivia, and I'm usually quite excellent at it. Except the one time that I was a guest on Celebrity Jeopardy, and it's.
Kelly Ripa
Not you, it's the button.
Josh Gad
So. Well, this is what happened. So it was. We did the. You know how beforehand you do the practice round. So I do the practice round. The great late Alex Trebek says, oh, well, you're going to. You're going to run away with this tonight because I had just. I had such a killer run. And then we get to the game, and I literally cannot get an answer. And then I start freaking out, and I start. I literally became an impression of the SNL spoof of celebrities on Jeopardy. At that point, I was so embarrassed.
Kelly Ripa
Did you finish last place or did you come from behind? Final Jeopardy.
Josh Gad
Oh, no, I very much finished in last place. I. My last. My. My written final Jeopardy. Answer was like a joke, like, literally trying to save face.
Colman Domingo
It was.
Josh Gad
It was a nightmare. It was a nightmare. But when I played Jeopardy. At home, I'm.
Kelly Ripa
You know, all the answers.
Josh Gad
I'm quite good at it. Yeah, it's.
Kelly Ripa
I know. It's very scary to be those shows. It's scary. It's like your brain goes. It's where your brain goes to die.
Josh Gad
Truly.
Kelly Ripa
If you were a drag performer, what would your drag name be? And we go by these rules Name of your first pet street you grew up on.
Josh Gad
It's really a weird one. Mickey. North 37th Street. A horrible drag name.
Kelly Ripa
Like what terrible drag name. I just read something funny on Instagram. It said your stripper name is your best friend's first name and your best friend's last name. I thought that was pretty funny. What is something you're kind of snobby about hotels.
Josh Gad
You know what's funny? I grew up really staying at some pretty shitty motels. And the first time that I ever got a whiff of, like, what luxury was, I was like, I'm not going back to that. My wife is always furious with the way I travel because I'm such a snob about it, but I love travel.
Kelly Ripa
No, but I think it's like travel is an experience.
Josh Gad
It is. It's a memory experience.
Kelly Ripa
And if you have the. If you have the extra money, if you. You're in a position where you can do that, you owe it to yourself to do.
Josh Gad
Yeah, I agree.
Kelly Ripa
I say Mark never knows. Do you know what I say? Do you know what I say to Mark every time we travel? I tell him that we got upgraded. He has no idea.
Josh Gad
I lie so much about travel. I like just trying to hide the dirty secrets. I have an incredible travel agent, by the way. If you ever.
Kelly Ripa
I know. I have an incredible travel agent who hides all my bodies. I mean, literally.
Josh Gad
This is named Bobby.
Kelly Ripa
No, no, it's Dan. It's Dan. But they sound like maybe they work for the same company. Literally. Mark thinks that we've been using miles for first class tickets and that we've been upgraded through our credit card for.
Josh Gad
Every hotel to think so.
Kelly Ripa
And he's. He's happy as a clam, and I'm happy.
Josh Gad
Guess what? He's going to know after this podcast comes out.
Kelly Ripa
He never. Here's the funny thing. He never listens to these podcasts.
Josh Gad
Okay. We're great.
Kelly Ripa
Spoiler alert. Yeah. Okay. What is the first expensive thing you bought when you started making money?
Josh Gad
Wow. Wow. That's a. That's a good question.
Kelly Ripa
What is the. Besides the Beverly Hills Hotel medical suite?
Josh Gad
I think the first real expensive thing I bought was my wife's engagement ring.
Kelly Ripa
Oh, that's a good one.
Josh Gad
Because I got my first big paycheck on a movie called 21 Good Movie. And that's when I proposed to ITA. Thank you.
Ilana Glazer
How'd you propose?
Josh Gad
Oh, this is a funny story. So she was meant to come out to Las Vegas where we were shooting, and in the middle of the scene I was gonna have the actor formerly known as Kevin Spacey and I do a. Do a bit together, which I had written to make it look like it was part of the scene as she was watching at the monitor. And then in the middle of the scene, I was going to propose to her. And I found out two days before she was going to come that I had. They called me up asking me if I could last minute replacement one of the actors on this new sitcom that I auditioned for months earlier that was going to be Kelsey Grammer's return to TV after Frasier and Patricia Heaton's return to TV after Everybody Loves Raymond, created by these two guys named Steve Levitan and Chris Lloyd, who would go on to create Modern Family. The cast was like Ty Burrell, Fred Willard. So it was insane. And what the actor who played one of the other roles was let go after the dress rehearsal, the audience dress. And so they called me up asking me if I could fly in to LA and do the live taping with Jeremy Burroughs directing the legendary Jimmy Burroughs. Oh, my God, Jim Burrows.
Kelly Ripa
Wow.
Colman Domingo
Sure.
Josh Gad
So Eda had no reason to come to Vegas anymore. So I called up my best friend, Seth Gable, and Eda's best friend, Christy Camp, and I said, guys, can you go to everybody store, flower store in LA and get as many rose petals as you can find and just lay them out leading up to the house, through the hallway into the bedroom and put a bunch of candles on. So the two of them, God bless them, went out and did this. We get past the driveway, there's all these rose petals, and I'm thinking, this is going to be the most romantic proposal ever. We get like halfway through the driveway and she goes, are you proposing to me?
Kelly Ripa
Oh, my gosh.
Josh Gad
I was like, damn it. This ended up being the most. It went from being like the coolest proposal to just the worst proposal possible.
Kelly Ripa
No, it's still romantic.
Josh Gad
But it was, you know, it's a thought that counts. But yeah, so that's. That's how.
Kelly Ripa
But going back to the Kevin Spacey.
Josh Gad
Movie, you know what's very interesting, and I talk about this in the book, he never ever remotely behaved like that in front of me. Although I had heard many, many stories. And I truly feel for everybody who.
Kelly Ripa
Oh, me too.
Colman Domingo
Oh, yeah.
Josh Gad
Was the subject of his predatory behavior. What he did do, which was very strange, was he would take me out to a restaurant and make me do impressions with him. And it was a very weird thing. He would do like Jack Lemmon. And then like, I would Do Maya Angelou. I did do a really good Maya Angelou, and he would be very tickled by it.
Kelly Ripa
Can we hear Maya? Can we hear Maya for a second?
Josh Gad
Is it still okay for me to do Maya even though she's passed as well?
Kelly Ripa
She's passed away, and it's your tribute.
Josh Gad
I know why the cage bird sang. I mean, because he's stuck in a fucking cage. So I love you, Maya, wherever you are. So, yeah, I would do, like, random impressions. I do, like, a really good Rudy Giuliani. I have the weirdest impressions.
Kelly Ripa
Can we hear Rudy? It's way too Rudy. Oh, my God. I just want to.
Josh Gad
You know what I'm really excited about? There is no reason that my good friend Donald Trump can no longer be the king he's always imagined. So I'm very excited because I can break the law again, which is thrilling to do as a lawyer in New York City. So I would do these random impressions. He would do random impressions back, and we would just sit there alone in a restaurant doing this back and forth, and I never quite knew how to end the game and was always like, I just want to eat my burger.
Kelly Ripa
If I had been there with you, I'd have been like, let's eat the burger and get the check. We've got to go do the Maya Angelou. And then we got to go. We got to bounce.
Josh Gad
Gad. Take the burger to go.
Kelly Ripa
Exactly. Okay, last one. Best piece of advice you've ever got.
Josh Gad
Ooh. My mom. My mom had a. Had a line early on, I think I was coming off of Book of Mormon, like, opening night, and it was, like, euphoric.
Kelly Ripa
Yeah.
Josh Gad
And she looked at me and she goes, never let the highs be too high and never let the lows be too low. And it has really been such an incredible piece of advice because we as. Given what we do, we get to experience real milestones, both high and low, that are both exhilarating and equally debilitating. There's nothing like success. There's nothing like failure. And oftentimes one can come immediately after the other. And I think a lot of times people don't know how to handle that because it becomes really a self reflection of you. You know, in. In college, our teacher once said, this is the only profession where there's no pencil or keyboard separating you from the work you do. You are always on the line. And when my mom said that to me, it really kind of gave me a perspective that has allowed me, especially in the age of, like, trolls and social media and, you know, you have so many people who love you, but they're never quite as loud as the people who hate you. And you know, critics and, you know, box office and you know, series cancellations are equally meaningful as Tony awards and raves and achievements and gigantic paychecks. So at a certain point, you have to just treat it all as noise and do the things that matter to you the most. And I write about this in the book as well, which is, I think, the proudest I've ever been of what I get to do and who I am was actually the period during the pandemic where I got paid for nothing that I did. But I made myself entertain in any way that I could, whether it was reading books of kids or doing my, you know, Reunited Apart series where I reunited my favorite cast from my favorite movies and to raise money for organizations that needed it. And it was really, it was one of those things that it was so pure that it just gave me such pride that I could do what I want to do without any of the noise. Because all the only purpose for its existence wasn't commerce, it wasn't fame, it wasn't accolades. It was just to get people through hard times and. And it was therefore incredibly meaningful.
Kelly Ripa
Yes.
Ilana Glazer
Couldn't love Josh more.
Kelly Ripa
I know, it's so funny. It's like just when we think we can't love Josh more, then he goes and does the that thing where he makes us love him more. Thank you for joining us today, Josh. Jan Albert
I'll get it.
Kelly Ripa
I'll send you. Who do you love?
Ilana Glazer
Him in what was the show?
Jan Albert
The one of his, like silly teen movies. But he was just Scooby Doo. No, she's all That I was like, I'm a nerdy girl, you know?
Kelly Ripa
What poster did you have on your bedroom wall? Was it a Freddie Prinze Jr. No.
Jan Albert
My Freddie Prinze Jr. Clippings were like secret, private, secret clippings. I had the Beatles and Bob Dylan. I was obsessed with the Beatles, Bob Dylan and Stevie Wonder and Joni Mitchell. I wanted to be in a different time and not. Not just a poster. I like, I made, like, my walls, a collage. It was crazy. It was. It was compulsive.
Kelly Ripa
Yeah. Yeah. Also because you were born older. You were born with your old soul.
Jan Albert
I was like, truly mourning. Not being born in the 50s is crazy.
Kelly Ripa
Yeah. Who was your first kiss?
Jan Albert
A nice guy named Brian Heyman. My brother's friend who was. My brother's four years older than me. We weren't in high school together. Brian was three years older than me. I was a freshman. He was a senior. But I was, like, almost predatory in a way, because I was like, I have to break this seal and I have to make this happen. It was, like, crazy. It was like.
Kelly Ripa
Yeah.
Jan Albert
And it was like. I was, like, in ninth grade, so I was just, like, desperate to get it done.
Kelly Ripa
Oh, yeah, you had to get it done.
Jan Albert
Yeah. I learned how to, like, make and take love later, more from my. My partner, now my husband.
Kelly Ripa
Yeah, it was.
Jan Albert
It was. Speaking of compulsive. I was, like, compulsive at the time. I was like, let's do this.
Kelly Ripa
Let's get this done. First concert. Who was your first concert? Concert.
Jan Albert
James Taylor, baby.
Ilana Glazer
Wow. That's a good one.
Colman Domingo
That's a good one.
Kelly Ripa
That's a really good one.
Jan Albert
Yeah, like, beach.
Kelly Ripa
I was a little kid.
Jan Albert
I was maybe, like eight or so, and my parents took us.
Kelly Ripa
Oh, your parents took you? Yeah, that's. That's really good. That's thoughtful parenting.
Jan Albert
First car, Honda Civic.
Kelly Ripa
Stick shift.
Mark Consuelos
Nice.
Kelly Ripa
Stick, stick shift.
Jan Albert
Two door, four seats, but two door.
Kelly Ripa
Four seats and two doors. Do you know how to drive? Yeah, I know how to drive a stick.
Ilana Glazer
You do? Obviously, Albert. You do?
Kelly Ripa
Yeah. My.
Mark Consuelos
I've never had a car to own.
Kelly Ripa
Now my dad was a bus driver. There was not. There was no not learning how to drive. I was lucky. I didn't take my driver's test in a New Jersey transit. Okay. First paying job.
Jan Albert
I was a. I mean, my first paying job, but it was off the book. I was a mother's helper. When I was nine years old, I was, like, desperate to start making money and, like, plan to be a comedian in New York. It was crazy. But I like my first job on the books, I was a busboy at a.
Kelly Ripa
What restaurant?
Jan Albert
It was called the Brook House in Stony Brook, New York, on Long Island. And it was like a. Like lunch, dinner, and ice cream spot, and I cleaned tables and it.
Kelly Ripa
Was that the first job you quit or got fired from?
Jan Albert
I think I quit. I don't think I ever got fired from a job.
Kelly Ripa
I'm.
Jan Albert
I'm a real worker.
Kelly Ripa
See that? We have that in common. I've never. Well, I kind of got fired from a job, but I didn't know it. I was replaced in a voiceover movie, but they never told me that I was replaced. It was very.
Ilana Glazer
When you're a busboy, do you get the tips that people live on the table?
Kelly Ripa
That's just split the tips.
Jan Albert
No, it's more like what the server, you know, like, hands you without looking you in the eyes at the end of the night. You know what I mean?
Josh Gad
It's like.
Kelly Ripa
It's more the server. So you're really getting ripped off?
Jan Albert
Yes. Fully ripped off.
Kelly Ripa
Yeah. What is your guilty pleasure?
Jan Albert
My guilty pleasure is like. I mean, I don't really. I have been so anxious for so long in my life that the pleasure I have now I don't have guilt about.
Kelly Ripa
It's just pleasure.
Jan Albert
Yeah. I love having sex. I love, like, a little bit of edibles. I really like to have. Like, I just had these four. Four milligrams.
Kelly Ripa
Two.
Jan Albert
Two milligram gummies yesterday. Getting. Having little edibles and hanging out with my kid doing skincare while watching Ina Garten, you know?
Kelly Ripa
Yeah. Amazing.
Jan Albert
Yeah. But no guilt. Really.
Mark Consuelos
Sounds like every gay man I know.
Kelly Ripa
The rap gift for doing Broad City was a Broad City vape pen, which I didn't know what it was. This is how old I am. I thought it was a harmonica, and Mark was like, no, honey, that's a vape pen. If you were a drag performer, what would your name be?
Jan Albert
Oh, my gosh.
Kelly Ripa
So you know how this game goes. It's the first pet you ever owned and the street you grew up on.
Jan Albert
Oh, yes, yes, yes. Then. Oh, it's very. It doesn't make any sense.
Kelly Ripa
Sarah.
Josh Gad
Fourth.
Kelly Ripa
Sarah forth.
Ilana Glazer
Sarah was your pet's name?
Jan Albert
Sarah was my first dog that my parents had in college.
Kelly Ripa
Emma.
Jan Albert
Emma fourth. It doesn't make sense as a drag name.
Kelly Ripa
Bad drag name.
Jan Albert
Really Bad drag name. It's almost like a drag politician, perhaps. You know what I mean? Not really yet.
Kelly Ripa
Is there something that you're kind of snobby about you don't strike me as snobby, but is there, like, I'll only use.
Jan Albert
I'm, like, snobby about Vibe, and I'm trying to claim it more. Like, if people are off or not cool. I want to, like, not hang out. And I don't want to perform that I'm having a good time. I'm trying to get into that more and more and just let myself be snobby about vibe.
Kelly Ripa
So important.
Jan Albert
I'm.
Kelly Ripa
That's important.
Jan Albert
I'm close with Zoe Kravitz and Lenny Kravitz now, and Lenny was once telling us a story about Prince hanging out with Prince. They're young people, and they show up to a party, and Prince, like, read the vibe from outside the house and was like, no. And he turns around and he leaves. And I carry that, like, story. And the way Lennon was telling it with me all the time, where it's like, that is the coolest shit you can do is protect your energy. So I'm trying to get snobby about that shit.
Kelly Ripa
Yeah, that's good. And, you know, it's so funny. Our very unsnobby sound editor here, Seth. When you said you're snobby about Vibe. Seth, who's sort of like. I'm not even sure if he's listening half the time, but he actually. He actually started nodding, and he goes, mm, mm.
Jan Albert
Thank you, Seth Ronquist.
Kelly Ripa
Oh, my God. Did you just hear him? Wait, he just spoke. Seth, say it again. She didn't hear you. Hi, Alana. Big fan. He just said, hi, Alana. Big fan. Thanks, Seth.
Jan Albert
You got good taste, brother.
Kelly Ripa
You got good taste, brothers. Hear that? Yeah. He's like, I've never, like. I'm not kidding. I've known him for 20 years. This is the most I've heard him speak. Hi, Alana. Big fan. Incredible. Incredible. You've gotten more words out of Seth than I've gotten in 20 years. Okay, if you weren't a comedian, actor, writer, producer, what profession do you think you would have gone into therapy?
Jan Albert
Love it. People's tea. I want to hear what's fucked up about them. I want to untangle. I want to hear about their sexual proclivities. Oh, therapy. I don't know.
Kelly Ripa
See, I think you would have been a social worker. I like. You would have been a social worker because you care very deeply about people.
Jan Albert
Yes, But I don't know if I could handle, like, going into other people's homes and being like, fuck, this is fucked up, versus, like, creating a space where it's like, come on in, and you can have a protected space at least now at 37. But maybe I would have started as a social worker when I could and.
Kelly Ripa
Gone into, yeah, right. Best advice you ever got.
Jan Albert
I say Amy Poehler's often, which is that she told Abby, and I, treat yourself like your own daughter. And that's like, something that I'm like, damn, I'm still trying to do that, and, like, mother my inner child. But I say it's often that I was trying to think of another one, but I'll leave it at that.
Kelly Ripa
That's really good advice, though.
Jan Albert
It's very good.
Kelly Ripa
Great advice, Jan. That's what we're going to start doing.
Jan Albert
It's a long practice, too, because it's like, you know, you can treat your daughter or your son with care and compassion, empathy, but yourself, it just is so much harder, and there's so much harshness in the way of that. It's very good advice. It's just that I've said it so many times. I was trying to think of something fresh, but it's one.
Kelly Ripa
I treat myself like somebody trying to mug me. You know what I mean? I've kind of like, I do. I am so horrible to myself. I am gonna stop that. I'm gonna start treating myself like Lola. Yeah.
Jan Albert
Yes. Proud and, you know, respectful.
Kelly Ripa
You know, what's the fondest memory of any show you've ever worked on?
Jan Albert
I mean, Broad City. I haven't worked on so many shows, but Broad City, gosh. You know, I think when it was, like, my favorite moments were when it was just me and Abby and Paul and Lucia. I mean, I don't know, I liked all the different, like, writers, but when it was the four of us, like, so stuck and having a deadline looming and, like, getting delirious and laughing so hard. Paul W. Downs gets me so hard. You know, what was it? I used to waitress during college and when I was starting in comedy on Rector street in Battery Park City at this place called Steamers Landing, which was just. Oh, God, it was so gross. And, like, so, like, it was all tourists, so nobody tipped. And it was just. It was terrible. And the. The, like, regulars who were drunk. So it was. It was just. It was really. It was really tough, but been interesting. And once it was just me and Abby and Abby and I would. After all, the writers would leave. We would rewrite the scripts over and over to meet the demands of our budget or whatever. And Paul and Lucia had written in a script, rewritten Steamer's landing, you know, as a restaurant called Dumper's Post. I read it out loud and I literally collapsed onto the floor laughing. They really get me.
Kelly Ripa
Love Ilana Glaser. Yes. Love her movie Babes is now streaming, so check it out. It's hilarious. Plus YouTube the video of Mark on Broad City with Ilana. It is.
Ilana Glazer
It's priceless.
Kelly Ripa

Colman Domingo
We'Re celebrating our 10 year wedding anniversary in two days. Amazing, but we met almost 20 years ago. Next year will be 20 years.
Kelly Ripa
Oh my gosh.
Colman Domingo
I was living. I lived in New York, but I went to Berkeley Rep to do a show. So on Sunday night, I decided to go to go to Walgreens to get a mask. I wanted to get, like, a Queen Helene mask to, like, get my pores together. So I go in there, and walking out of Walgreens was this beautiful, beautiful man with hair down past his shoulders and a lip piercing. And I was like, what? And he had the greenest eyes. I don't know, he just looked like something out of a fairy tale. And we just locked eyes, and I was just awestruck by it. So then I came back outside. I didn't even go inside. I came back out. And I'm looking at him, he's looking at me. He's with this girl. And this girl seems to be pissed off about something, but he keeps looking over at me. And I was on the phone with somebody who was just gabbing away. I was like, okay, I need to go. I need to go. I'm going to talk to this guy. And I finally hang up. By the time I hang up, he. He and this girl there, she's dragging him down the street down Shattuck Avenue in Berkeley. And he keeps looking back at me. And I raised my hand and said, come back. He doesn't come back. And so I was like. So then I'm really. I was. I'm gonna tell you the full story. I was so kind of dazed about all of this. I go back outside and I think, will he come back? And I thought, well, maybe he felt the same way and I'm a romantic. Maybe he'll meet me back here next Sunday at 8 o' clock if he felt the same way. So I put that away. Three days later, I'm trying to buy a used computer on Craigslist because I got a grant to help out with my writing. You know, I was a struggling artist. I was on Craigslist for like, a good hour, and then I was just staring at the home screen, and I remember reading all those Craigslist missed connections, and I thought, well, what if I wrote one of those?
Kelly Ripa
Oh, my gosh.
Colman Domingo
So I started just reading them, and then I get to the second page, third from the top, and I see it says, saw you outside of Walgreens, Berkeley. I literally jumped the fuck up. And I was, get the fuck out of here. That's me. I click on it. I almost clicked on it. Like I was scared. Like, clicked it. And he described me and my faux hawk, because it was 20 years ago when I had a faux hawk. And he described me to a t And said, I'm sorry. We were lost and my friend was rushing off. I hope this finds you. Apparently he posted that just an hour before. He tried to post it three times before, but it go up until like an hour before I reach out to him by email. We agree to meet up two days later in San Francisco at this bar named Dalva, called Dalva. I go in there, we have a beautiful night. I trying to be a good boy. He wants me to go home with him. I'm like, no, no, I'm trying, I'm trying. I'm trying to, you know, make him.
Kelly Ripa
Earn it a little bit more.
Colman Domingo
Or I'm trying not to be a whore. Yes, exactly.
Kelly Ripa
Yes, I got it. I'm with you. I understand.
Colman Domingo
You understand. So I was like, you know, I'm trying to practice some good behavior. So. So I was like, well, how about this? I'll go home with you, but we can just. Let's just cuddle tonight. Cause I really. Something about him I really liked. I just really liked him. And so we're laying there and I couldn't sleep. It's about 4 in the morning and I just say this quietly. I didn't think he was awake or anything. I just said, I think I love you and you're about to change my life.
Kelly Ripa
Oh, my God.
Colman Domingo
And so we've been together ever since.
Kelly Ripa
Wow. Okay, so I'm going to ask you some rapid fire questions. Okay, sounds good.
Colman Domingo
I'm here for it.
Kelly Ripa
Childhood celebrity crush.
Colman Domingo
Oh, oh, oh, I know. Lynda Carter.
Kelly Ripa
Oh, Wonder Woman.
Mark Consuelos
Oh, now, yeah. Dead.
Ilana Glazer
I mean, Albert.
Kelly Ripa
Albert's childhood celebrity.
Mark Consuelos
Better log into Craigslist after this.
Colman Domingo
Oh, shit. Oh my God.
Mark Consuelos
I love that I'm going on Craigslist.
Colman Domingo
There we go.
Kelly Ripa
Okay. What poster did you have on your wall growing up in your bedroom?
Colman Domingo
Poster I had on my wall in the bedroom growing up. Actually, it was a. Because it was my brother's. The Black Queen of Sheba. She was half naked and she was velvet and she had her boobs hanging.
Kelly Ripa
I remember that poster. Yeah. Was it neonish?
Colman Domingo
Yeah, it was neonish. And there was a Pamper underneath her.
Kelly Ripa
Yep. And yeah, my Uncle Tony had that poster. Like in the living room. Exactly. It was prominently like, you know, over the. Over the sofa.
Colman Domingo
Yes.
Kelly Ripa
Did you have a nickname growing up?
Colman Domingo
My nickname is Jay for jj. J or JJ which is from a middle name. Jason.
Kelly Ripa
Jason.
Ilana Glazer
No, I read that your mom named you Jason based on a soap opera.
Colman Domingo
She did. She did. It was one of her favorite characters on Young and the Restless.
Kelly Ripa
Oh, Young and the Restless.
Ilana Glazer
Did she watch All My Children?
Kelly Ripa
No, because Young and the Restless and All My Children were on at time the same. So you either watched one or the other. Yeah, you had to choose. Back in those days, you had to choose Jan. First kiss.
Colman Domingo
First kiss.
Kelly Ripa
It was your first kiss.
Colman Domingo
Yeah, my first kiss. Oh, my God. You just have to think, was it a kiss that mattered? Like, what was my first kiss?
Kelly Ripa
Yeah, it doesn't matter. It doesn't have to matter.
Colman Domingo
The funny thing is, I remember my first screen kiss was with Paul Rudd, which is funny enough. That's a good one.
Kelly Ripa
He should be everybody's first kiss.
Josh Gad
That's a great one.
Colman Domingo
Exactly, exactly. And it was just a really sweet moment. Like the characters in no way, shape or form should have been kissing. But in a moment of improv, he reached over and kissed me. So Paul Rudd.
Kelly Ripa
Paul Rudd.
Colman Domingo
First concert, Earth, Wind and Fire at the Mann Music center in Philadelphia.
Kelly Ripa
Oh, my God.
Colman Domingo
1978. I went with my sister, my brother.
Kelly Ripa
Ah, that's a good one.
Colman Domingo
Fairmount Park.
Kelly Ripa
Everyone that's answered that question. All right, we've got to stop asking that question. Coleman wins first paying job.
Colman Domingo
First paying job was at McDonald's. The McDonald's at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia down on 34th Street.
Ilana Glazer
What was your job there? What'd you do?
Colman Domingo
I was on, first of all, I started on fries. And then I went over on. Because fries was like the jam. Like, you had to be quick to make these fries. So I was really good on fries. And then I went to chill out a bit more and I was on burgers. And then I like, moved up and I was on the register. Wow.
Kelly Ripa
I worked at McDonald's once for our show, remember? They did. We used to do something called Kelly does it Do It Week? So Do It Week. We would call it Do It Week. So the viewers would write in and ask me to do things that they would like to see me do. And they had me work at the drive through window at McDonald's in Midtown Manhattan on the West Side Highway.
Mark Consuelos
34Th and 10th.
Kelly Ripa
34Th and 10th. I was cursed at. A woman picked a fight with me. It was brutal. It was the hardest. That was the hardest job. And I worked it one day. And I was like, the people that work that register at the drive thru should work for NASA because you have to use every part of your brain.
Mark Consuelos
They've closed that McDonald's, by the way.
Kelly Ripa
Yeah.
Ilana Glazer
Do you still eat McDonald's now or will you not eat it as well?
Colman Domingo
Do you still eat McDonald's you know what that's like?
Kelly Ripa
A little.
Colman Domingo
That's a nice late night treat. Usually, like after an award show or something, we gotta hit a 24 hour course.
Kelly Ripa
McDonald's fries are the best, by the way. They're.
Colman Domingo
It's the best fries because it's peanut oil.
Kelly Ripa
Yeah, well, everything should be fried in peanut oil. There, I said it. Jan, we can't take it back now. What's your go to karaoke song?
Colman Domingo
Usually it's something like Marvin Gaye, like, what's going on? Sometimes I get into a Luther Vandross period because I have a very. I can sing like Luther a little bit.
Kelly Ripa
Do you want to sing like you.
Colman Domingo
Don'T want to sing? I would sing something like Let me.
Josh Gad
Hold you tight.
Colman Domingo
If only for one night. Let me keep you near here to ease the way of fears it would be so nice if only for 1 9. Yeah.
Kelly Ripa
Wow. COLEMAN is too good for this podcast, by the way. Did you just figure that out?
Josh Gad
I'm getting an Uber to Walgreens right now.
Kelly Ripa
Albert wants you to know he's Ubering to Walgreens. He'll be on the corner. I'll be standing with him, fighting with him.
Colman Domingo
I love it. I love it.
Kelly Ripa
What's the very first thing you do when you wake up in the morning?
Colman Domingo
Very first thing I do when I wake up in the morning is besides grab my phone, is get coffee. I need coffee first. And I like to sit quietly with coffee with oat milk. But usually when I'm at home, the first thing I do is I look over and I kiss my husband.
Kelly Ripa
Oh, that's nice.
Colman Domingo
And I. And I love his smile. He smile. He smiles when he wakes up.
Kelly Ripa
Oh, that's nice. Yeah, that's so nice. What's the last thing you texted someone before this interview?
Colman Domingo
Let me look it up. Here we go.
Kelly Ripa
Okay, let's hear it. Yeah.
Colman Domingo
The last thing I texted someone was, Ah, see, they done jacked me up. Didn't have you on the schedule, but cool, I'll be ready.
Kelly Ripa
I love that.
Colman Domingo
That was to my stylist, Inez, who I didn't realize she was on the schedule for tonight. Exactly.
Kelly Ripa
What are you doing tonight? Where's tonight?
Colman Domingo
Tonight is a Tastemaker screening at the Crosby Street Hotel. And I didn't realize she was coming, so I said, see, they done jacked me up. Didn't have you on the schedule, but cool, I'll be ready.
Kelly Ripa
What is something you're currently watching?
Colman Domingo
Something I'm currently watching. What the fuck am I watching? Oh, you Know what I currently watched, Honestly, I watched the Faye Dunaway documentary.
Kelly Ripa
Oh, it was so good. I thought it was very good.
Colman Domingo
It was so good.
Kelly Ripa
I loved it.
Colman Domingo
Yes, it was great.
Kelly Ripa
I loved it.
Colman Domingo
It's great.
Kelly Ripa
What's your fondest memory from any production you worked on?
Colman Domingo
I would say the production of Passing Strange, that musical changed my life. And it was the final shows that were shot by Spike Lee. And he wants to do a reprisal of the song. It's all right. And we'd never done it in the three years that we've done the show. So we did a reprisal and it turned into this spiritual catharsis. It became church. And we were. It was euphoric. The audience. Well, I'll never forget that night for the rest of my life. It felt like what we were trying, what we believed it could be. It just became spiritual. Yeah. And it's caught on film when people watch Passing Strange on Amazon or something like that, I guess. Yeah.
Kelly Ripa
By the way, speaking of euphoric, I had lunch with Sam Levinson and his wife Ashley on Sunday.
Colman Domingo
Aren't they lovely?
Kelly Ripa
I want you to know that you are their favorite person.
Colman Domingo
And they're mine. They're really.
Kelly Ripa
You really are. Yeah, they're. They are gems and saints. But to hear the way they speak. I think that when people say nice things about people, there's an obligation to pass it on. Oftentimes we only pass on when somebody's shit talking. Somebody like, well, you know, what so and so said about you, I think you should know that you were. They think the world of you. With good reason.
Colman Domingo
I think the world of them, too. They're just, just wonderful, sweet, sweet people. They've really become family. Yeah.
Kelly Ripa
Very, very special.
Colman Domingo
And I was very excited. I was talking to Ashley before and she told me she was hanging out with you guys. And I was like, oh, man. I said, tell them I adore them. I look forward to, like, seeing you.
Kelly Ripa
I wish you were there. That was a fun barbecue. You would have liked it. It was really great. We had a great time.
Colman Domingo
I'll be out there next time.
Kelly Ripa
Next time for sure. We would love that. And after you meet Albert up at Walgreens, he can invite you. Albert has the quintessential event in the Hamptons in the summer.
Mark Consuelos
Memorial Day weekend.
Kelly Ripa
Memorial Day weekend, Albert.
Colman Domingo
I'll be there.
Kelly Ripa
It's called Sausage Fest, AKA the Meat Gala. And it is the premier event of the Hammer.
Mark Consuelos
There's actual sausages being served.
Colman Domingo
I'm dying right now. I have to be There. That sounds fantastic.
Mark Consuelos
All gay men and Kelly.
Kelly Ripa
It's all gay men and me and usually my daughter.
Colman Domingo
The way the world should be. That's the way the world should be.
Kelly Ripa
Yeah, exactly. That's it. That's it. Oh, I love that Colman Domingo, guys. He is everything. His movie, Sing Sing, is now streaming, and I'm sure by the time this episode drops, he will have 10 other projects out. All right, Jan, Albert. Albert, Jan. What's next?
Ilana Glazer
We have some Ask Kelly's for you.
Kelly Ripa
Aren't people tired of asking?
Ilana Glazer
No, they want to know.
Kelly Ripa
Okay.
Ilana Glazer
Okay. So from Lauren Solomon. What advice do you have? Young females early in their careers.
Kelly Ripa
Gosh, that is such a good one. I would say you have to arm yourself with the knowledge that you're going to have to work twice as hard as any guy around you in the room. Be half as dramatic and advocate for yourself. Do not take no for an answer. And if a door closes in your face, climb in through the window. That's great advice. Is that good advice?
Ilana Glazer
It's great advice.
Mark Consuelos
Yep. Next one. How do you support an adult child going through a breakup?
Kelly Ripa
Oh, my gosh. Oh, this is such a good question. I think the key to handling an adult child breakup is to listen, to offer support. Try not to give advice. Try not to jump on the bandwagon of badmouthing the person because you never know, they might find their way back to each other. And you don't want to be excommunicated. Communicating from the family. Just be an active listener and to offer as much support as you can. Neutral support.
Ilana Glazer
Okay. From Kately Todoroff. Are you the type of parent that your kids tell you everything? And how did you foster that relationship?
Kelly Ripa
You know, I think we got better with each child as time went on. We sort of mastered the art slowly, over time of not having any expression on our face, no matter what. And that is the key. Like, if you react strongly to whatever your child is telling you, chances are they will feel judged, humiliated, or shamed in some way. I'm assuming. Like, I'm not talking about good news. Everybody loves a good news story. I'm talking about tough stuff, tough conversations. You have to master the art, and you may have to practice it in a mirror. Lord knows we did in the mirror. Practice looking nonplussed, passive, serene if you will, but try not to have any expression that would indicate any sort of thought process formulating in your head. You can have lots of thoughts when you're together or by yourself. You can have all the thoughts in the world. But you don't want to indicate to them your thoughts because that way it takes them out of the judgment zone and they feel like it's a safe space to share anything that they are going through, thinking or dealing with.
Mark Consuelos
Next one from Courtney lee Koch. I'm 40 and single. How do I find the confidence and not get discouraged?
Kelly Ripa
Oh, my gosh. Well, first of all, Courtney, life begins at 40. So your life is just beginning. So if you think you're behind something, you're not finding confidence is. I don't know how to find confidence. If you find. If you figure that out, let me know. But not getting discouraged is. I would, you know, keep doing whatever it is you're doing. Go to work, do your job, have a positive outlook, keep an open mind, because what a difference a day makes is not just a song and not just a phrase. Everything in your life can change in a day. Sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worst, but everything can change in a day. So you never know who is out there waiting for you. And you never know what possibilities and opportunities. Opportunities are out there waiting for you. But you have to keep an open mind to be open and present enough to understand when they're presenting themselves.
Ilana Glazer
Totally. And I think you also dive into the things that you love. Like, yeah, all the interests, all the things. Remember we had that expert on the show who was talking about dating, finding love again, and she was saying how you have to, like, take stock in everything that you love and really pursue those things.
Kelly Ripa
Pursue those things and that will attract you to people that also have shared interests and shared passions.
Mark Consuelos
And you're related to Ed Koch. She had a lot of confidence.
Kelly Ripa
Exactly. Yeah, exactly. Thank you. Well said. Well, she's either related to Ed Koch or David Koch. We're not sure.
Mark Consuelos
We don't know which one.
Kelly Ripa
We're not sure. It depends on how she's pronouncing her name. Well, that was fun.
Ilana Glazer
Yeah, it was a great one.
Kelly Ripa
