Rob Lowe
She told me she wanted to French kiss me and I didn't know what that was and all of a sudden there was that tongue in my mouth and I was like, I think I prefer American better, literally.
Kelly Ripa
Rob Lowe as Marcia Brady. Amazing. Somebody gonna cue me or do I cue myself?
Henry Winkler
Cue yourself.
Kelly Ripa
Okay. Hey, we are back with let's talk off camera. So let's get talking. Yeah, you asked for it. It is here. More rapid fire questions with two of our favorite guests, Rob Lowe and Henry Winkler. Does it get any better than those two gents? We asked them questions like who was your celebrity crush? Spoiler alert. Rob Lowe said me. What was your first paying job? Spoiler alert. Henry Winkler said me. And what's the best advice you ever received? Youngblood and the Fonz do not disappoint. So stick around for that. Plus we will answer some of your questions and in a brand new Ask Kelly round. Not a brand new Ask Kelly. Yes, but before we get to that, let's check in with my long suffering producers, Albert and Jan. What is up you two?
Albert Bianchini
Well, we're cleaning out my parents house so we're going through all that crap.
Kelly Ripa
Are you finding anything good?
Albert Bianchini
We're starting, we're going there, we're descending on it this weekend. But we need like someone who's going to help sell like all this stuff. So Kyle goes through one of his real estate contacts and he finds this woman in Warren, New Jersey who has a company of going into homes and like you know, taking everything and the name of her business. Leave it to Linda. But Leave it to Linda now is all he wants to say. So whenever I ask him, I'm like, kyle, what do you think we should. What do you want for dinner?
Kelly Ripa
Leave it to Linda. Leave it to Linda.
Henry Winkler
Did you find the deed to the Lexus?
Albert Bianchini
No. The Lexus got sold, though. It went to a company and they took it and they're going to deal with the title and all of its. The deed.
Henry Winkler
The deed.
Kelly Ripa
How much does a Lexus go for?
Albert Bianchini
It sold for, like $22,000. It was what? Yeah.
Kelly Ripa
Was it new?
Albert Bianchini
The RX Lexus is like the. Any of the older ones. Those are the ones that, like, still. People want them for years. No, it's like five or six years old.
Kelly Ripa
Oh, that's a new car. Five or six years.
Henry Winkler
I love how, like, how you get excited about car, talking about cars. He gets obsessed. But then nothing more than the food. The food is everything.
Albert Bianchini
Oh, the food is everything. We had a big debacle over the Thanksgiving size.
Kelly Ripa
Tell me, tell me.
Albert Bianchini
Cheryl saved Thanksgiving, by the way. That being said.
Henry Winkler
Wait, so is Cheryl the caterer? Just so people understand, Cheryl's the caterer.
Kelly Ripa
From the Art of Eating, the greatest catering.
Henry Winkler
Like, who's Cheryl?
Albert Bianchini
Cheryl from the Art of Eating.
Henry Winkler
Okay.
Kelly Ripa
Like, if you've ever been anywhere and you have, like, you can always tell an Art of Eating event, which is how I discovered her. I went to some event one year, like, out on Long island. And the catering was so, like, charming and perfect and, like, elevated, but not fancy. Like, not snobby. It was just, like, great stuff and beautifully presented. And that's the Art of Eating.
Albert Bianchini
And what's. What. I other thing to add to her credit is I went there early in the day to pick up our stuff. And then Kelly's dinner wasn't until later. And she. I said, my God, today must be crazy. She goes, it is. She said, but we also have these. I know of these families nearby that don't have any money.
Kelly Ripa
Yeah.
Albert Bianchini
So we go and we, like, cater their dinners. Like, she and her husband John.
Kelly Ripa
Yeah. They're such do gooders.
Albert Bianchini
And I'm like, oh, my God. I said, cheryl, I wish I knew. Like, I would have moved my dinner later and gone with you to help them. She goes, oh, no, we have it all set.
Kelly Ripa
But she doesn't need you in the kitchen. Gingalooing the food. Gingalooning everything up.
Henry Winkler
Yeah. Eating it up.
Albert Bianchini
I thought that she's just an amazing woman. No. So we were in a big Stuffing debacle because I put Kyle in charge of the menu with my sister, which was a big mistake.
Kelly Ripa
How many were you all together?
Albert Bianchini
There were 11 of us.
Kelly Ripa
Okay.
Albert Bianchini
But his. Kyle's mom makes this southwestern chorizo cornbread stuffing that is out of this world. She flies from California with the chorizo, because God forbid you get the. God forbid you get the chorizo on the East Coast. But the size of the. Of the platter is like, you know, I don't know what, four. It probably says serving for more, but it's basically for four.
Henry Winkler
Right.
Kelly Ripa
Because Kyle comes from sensible eaters and we come from people that apparently every meal is the last and final meal.
Albert Bianchini
Well, we found throughout whatever this email chain was going back and forth, Kyle misunderstood and thought that my sister was still bringing her stuffing, which she usually does, and his mother was making the stuffing. And then we found out the night before that my sister's eyes are bulging. She said, no, no, no. You said you guys were making all of the stuffings. And Kyle said, no, that's not what I said. I said, my mom is making hers. You were bringing yours. So now we're in the middle of this. I pick up my phone, I text Cheryl, Cheryl, we're gonna need three to four sides of stuffing.
Kelly Ripa
You should have just come to me.
Henry Winkler
Do you eat the stuffing, Callie?
Kelly Ripa
Do you eat it? I had a little. I had a little on Thanksgiving just to put something else on my plate besides mashed potatoes and peas, because my plate is the saddest looking plate because I only eat mashed potatoes.
Albert Bianchini
Yeah, but you're.
Kelly Ripa
Mashed potatoes. Mashed. Sweet potatoes. Yeah, sweet potatoes. Mashed potatoes. And peas.
Henry Winkler
And peas.
Kelly Ripa
That is my plate. And so I put a scoop of the. I do the vegetable stuffing, not the.
Albert Bianchini
Oh, you did. That was good. It was.
Kelly Ripa
I did stuffing two ways because everybody likes it two ways. So I did stuffing two ways. But do I like it? I don't like Thanksgiving food, so I'm a bad judge. But Cheryl always comes through.
Albert Bianchini
She's the best.
Kelly Ripa
She is the greatest.
Albert Bianchini
I may or may not have also asked for a tray of Mac and cheese because I was nervous that we.
Kelly Ripa
Were going to have that. We had a tray of Mac and cheese, and the three wrestlers ate it. They ate it in the middle of the night while we slept. So it never even made it. It didn't make it to the day after. No, you didn't. No, it didn't make it. It was supposed to be for lunch the day after Thanksgiving to serve with the Le Leftovers. And they ate it in the middle of the night while we slept. A tray. Three people, a tray.
Albert Bianchini
Come on. That Mac and cheese is, like, crazy.
Kelly Ripa
I would have had no way of confirming that.
Henry Winkler
Okay, explain to me this, because I understand having Mac and cheese there, but you are taking a drug.
Albert Bianchini
Oh, yeah.
Henry Winkler
So now you've got your stuffing, your Mac and cheese, all this. When you take a certain amount of bites, aren't you like, I'm gonna throw.
Albert Bianchini
Off my mounjaro is. I take it Thursday night. It starts off the week, Thursday night. So by the time I get to. By the time I get to, like, Thanksgiving dinner, it's already, like, depleted. It's at the bottom of the building.
Kelly Ripa
So you take it deliberately. So on the weekends, you eat less.
Albert Bianchini
I take it Thursday nights.
Kelly Ripa
So you were out of Manjaro in your system.
Albert Bianchini
Right. Because who eats a big meal on a Thursday? Thanksgiving, actually very smart.
Kelly Ripa
That's actually very smart. Very clever.
Henry Winkler
But he's figuring out when to eat now.
Albert Bianchini
No, it makes sense because I eat. I tend to overeat on a weekend. Not during the week. During the week. You're so regulated during the week.
Kelly Ripa
You're disgusting.
Henry Winkler
So here's the question. Why didn't you take it earlier on, what, Thursday?
Albert Bianchini
I don't want to take it a day early. Can you do that? You're supposed to take it.
Kelly Ripa
You're asking us.
Albert Bianchini
You're the resident doctor.
Kelly Ripa
I am the doctor. But let me remind you, my specialties don't lie in Manjaro. They lie in plastic surgery.
Albert Bianchini
Oh, Benno, by the way, was so excited this morning.
Kelly Ripa
Oh. That he got his shout out, and.
Albert Bianchini
He said that the Polish man that had the five fingerling of potatoes said that somebody told him they help with hemorrhoids.
Henry Winkler
Oh, my Lord.
Albert Bianchini
He messaged you and I that this morning.
Kelly Ripa
So does preparation.
Henry Winkler
I looked up. Cause I didn't know that story. I wasn't here that day for that podcast. So when I heard it, I looked up your story about the eggs. The guy sticking the eggs up.
Kelly Ripa
Would you like me to send it to you? I've got no shortage. Now my news feed is feeding me a steady stream of things.
Henry Winkler
I've read it.
Kelly Ripa
Shoving their rectums.
Henry Winkler
Did it talk about the shells?
Albert Bianchini
No, it's no shells.
Henry Winkler
There were no shells. It was hard boiled eggs.
Kelly Ripa
He said hard boiled eggs. They didn't talk about shells.
Henry Winkler
They weren't today. When you were doing this gift segment and they were talking about the hard boiled eggs, all I kept thinking is, Kelly's thought bubble right now.
Kelly Ripa
I was like, I know. I know somebody.
Henry Winkler
Somebody who's gonna enjoy this hard bottle.
Kelly Ripa
I know a person. Like, if only. If only this person's name was revealed in the article.
Henry Winkler
There was a product that you stick an egg in and it. You shake it and it immediately takes off the shell.
Albert Bianchini
And you were thinking solely of.
Kelly Ripa
That's all it was. She was thinking about.
Henry Winkler
I knew she was thinking about that. And I was like 100ft away from.
Kelly Ripa
Her, and I was like, how do I have this discussion without having this discussion?
Albert Bianchini
You couldn't know. He's nowhere.
Kelly Ripa
Where's Jan?
Albert Bianchini
It's a commercial break conversation.
Kelly Ripa
Why can't I find her? As this. This skin removing hard boiled egg thing.
Albert Bianchini
Is here, but there is a method, right, to hard boiling. Hard boiling an egg that comes. That appeal comes off quickly, right? The shell comes off. There's a method. I forget what it is.
Kelly Ripa
I've never heard of it. But this thing just takes it off, you shake it and it skims.
Henry Winkler
We gotta find that. I'll track down who that guy is. We're send it to him for Christmas.
Kelly Ripa
We'll send it to him. It's just like, anonymously.
Albert Bianchini
Well, Jen, what do you. What do you have a leaf for Thanksgiving? What's your Thanksgiving? I mean, clearly there's food on the street.
Henry Winkler
No, I have to tell you, we had the most beautiful Thanksgiving because we ended up shifting gears. Originally, we were gonna go to my dad's. He's like over an hour away. And it was just not happening with Glenn this year. So we went to my friend's house a mile from my house.
Kelly Ripa
Amazing.
Henry Winkler
She's an amazing chef. This is, like, what she prides herself in. She cooked the most amazing meal. And my whole family was there playing. Plus her family and who I know and her friends who I know. And it ended up being more of a friends giving, but it was perfection.
Albert Bianchini
That's great.
Henry Winkler
And not to be, like, sappy, but the best thing that happened was we still do that tradition. They do it as well, where you go around the table and you say what you're thankful for.
Kelly Ripa
And I gave up on that a couple of years ago when it just devolved into angry accusations. And I was like, we're not doing this again.
Henry Winkler
Yeah. I mean, my two shithead sons who have hated each other their entire lives individually, each said that they were thankful for their new relationship with each other now that they're friends. And I was like, who paid them to do this? But it fucking made my day. Because that was a long time coming. That was, you know, 17 years in the making.
Kelly Ripa
It's beautiful when they become friends as adults.
Henry Winkler
Oh, my God. We finally got there.
Kelly Ripa
All right, let's get to it. Let's start with actor, writer, and podcast host of Literally, Rob Lowe.
Albert Bianchini
Woo.
Kelly Ripa
Rob Lowe. Oh, my God. Just saying the name. You loved him in the Outsider, St. Elmo's Fire. Young Blood. Young Blood. And about last night, the West Wing Parks and Rec behind the Candelabra, which is Albert's personal favorite film. Let's see what he had to say in our rapid fire round.
Rob Lowe
First paying job, Don Mendenhall's Carpet Talk, which was a chain of carpets in the Midwest. Voiceover was so young that I couldn't read.
Kelly Ripa
Oh, they had.
Rob Lowe
They had to say what I had to say, and then I would repeat it, and I was paid. My payment was $15 and a partridge Family album.
Kelly Ripa
Amazing. Do you have that? Do you have that recording? I would love to hear, baby. Rob Lowe. Oh, my gosh. Was it pre puberty?
Jan Chalet
Oh, God. I was.
Rob Lowe
I couldn't read.
Kelly Ripa
It was.
Rob Lowe
I bet you I was five.
Albert Bianchini
Wow.
Kelly Ripa
I was like, was it pre puberty?
Rob Lowe
She's like, I know. You still can't read. Was it pre puberty?
Kelly Ripa
We had a carpet. Do you remember the carpet guy? He did his own commercials. He did Big. Big Modis.
Rob Lowe
What is it with the carpet guys? They always had their own local commercials in the day.
Kelly Ripa
Yeah, Big Marty's. And Big Marty clearly smoked a lot, and Big Marty had the largest selection of full carpets and remnants.
Rob Lowe
Like, I want to know. Why do I need to know the name Don Mendel? Like, it's not, like, an international brand. Why was that part of it? And what is Carpet Talk? I just want a carpet. I want to talk to it. None of it makes any sense, but that's what my first job was.
Kelly Ripa
Rob, who was your first kiss?
Rob Lowe
Oh, for sure. Julie Ziegler, who played the jitterbug in the Dayton Community Theater children's version of the wizard of Oz, in which I played the coroner. And that sort of hiding under the flat in the dark of the theater where she smells like grease paint. She told me she wanted to French kiss me, and I didn't know what that was. And all of a sudden, there was that tongue in my mouth, and I. I think I prefer American better. I told you how young I was.
Kelly Ripa
Like, literally. Rob Lowe as Marcia Brady. Amazing. Who was your childhood celebrity crush?
Rob Lowe
Oh, for sure. Lori Partridge. Susan Day on the Partridge family.
Kelly Ripa
Oh, yeah. 100% Susan Day.
Rob Lowe
She was. I think she was. I think it's a long list of people from my age who are like, Laurie Partridge. Makes my stomach feel tingly.
Kelly Ripa
Yeah, but it wasn't really your stomach. But you thought it was your stomach.
Rob Lowe
Yeah, it wasn't.
Kelly Ripa
Yeah, right.
Rob Lowe
That's right.
Kelly Ripa
You were on everybody's poster. Like, you were hanging in Jan's bedroom. My bedroom, Albert's bedroom. But Albert still has you up there.
Albert Bianchini
Was.
Kelly Ripa
Still. You're still there. So who was on your wall?
Rob Lowe
Well, let's show you what a nerd I was.
Kelly Ripa
Oh, God.
Rob Lowe
On my wall was the one sheet, which is the movie poster of all the President's Men. And of course, I had the obligatory Farah poster.
Kelly Ripa
Of course. Yeah, you had to. You had to because you couldn't have all the President's Men. Your friends were gonna think you were weird.
Rob Lowe
Yes.
Kelly Ripa
Yes, exactly. So, favorite teacher growing up?
Rob Lowe
Oh, wow.
Kelly Ripa
We like to shout out our teachers here.
Rob Lowe
Boy, There's a few of them. There's Mrs. Sholkoff, who taught me home economics back in the day when they actually taught you things you could use in school. Learned how to use a sewing machine and crochet from Mrs. Shelkoff.
Kelly Ripa
Do you still know how to crochet? Can you still crochet?
Rob Lowe
I probably could.
Kelly Ripa
Oh, we need to do a crochet lesson with Rob Lowe next time he's on the talk show. Write that down.
Rob Lowe
We do, don't we?
Kelly Ripa
That's hilarious. That would be fun. Like, just.
Rob Lowe
That's a really good one.
Kelly Ripa
Like you teaching me how to crochet. Yeah. It's so unexpected.
Rob Lowe
So unexpected. Yeah, she would.
Albert Bianchini
I'll.
Rob Lowe
I'll give her the shot. I think she's a good one.
Kelly Ripa
Who was your first concert?
Rob Lowe
Oh, David Cassidy. See, the Partridge Family is a reoccurring theme.
Kelly Ripa
Wow. That had to be a concert. That's a big one. First starring role.
Rob Lowe
First starring role, I'm gonna say a TV show that I did when I was 15. It was an ABC family sitcom, and I played the Sun. Eileen Brennan was in it. Who? Hot off of the Sting and Private Benjamin. And I played her son, and it was called A New Kind of Family. Ratings were terrible. They kicked us off the air after four weeks. It was two families living together. And then after four weeks, they fired the other family and brought back a new family. And never explained to the audience where the other family went.
Kelly Ripa
My favorite thing TV does and the new.
Rob Lowe
The new family. The daughter of the new family was Janet Jackson.
Kelly Ripa
Oh, my gosh. That's Major.
Rob Lowe
Major.
Kelly Ripa
And did you know Janet Jackson? Like, did you watch her on Good Times? Did you?
Rob Lowe
Yes, yes. She was a young, really good actress.
Kelly Ripa
Yeah.
Rob Lowe
And I think she was so. I remember being so fed up with show business, she's like, I'm just gonna focus on music.
Kelly Ripa
Yeah. Glad she had a fallback plan.
Rob Lowe
Yeah, no kidding.
Kelly Ripa
What's the favorite line of dialogue that you have ever delivered?
Jan Chalet
Oh, boy.
Albert Bianchini
For sure.
Rob Lowe
For sure. It's anything in West Wing. And there's a speech in West Wing. It's the episode that got me an Emmy nomination, actually. And it's about what America means, and it's very Aaron Sorkin. And it's a beautiful Aaron Sorkin aria. But then again, on the other side of that, which is the career, this is exactly the type of career I'm proud of. You have that on one side, and then on the other side, you have me saying to Chris Farley, did you eat paint chips when you were a kid?
Kelly Ripa
What's your Go to karaoke song?
Rob Lowe
Oh, I have a list. I have a list on my phone.
Kelly Ripa
Oh, my God.
Henry Winkler
Call it out.
Kelly Ripa
Get the list.
Rob Lowe
Let's see what I got. Should we get the list out?
Kelly Ripa
Yes, because you know why I have.
Rob Lowe
A list is because inevitably you get to karaoke and you're like, oh, I forget.
Albert Bianchini
Oh, it's. Yeah, you have to have a list.
Rob Lowe
White Wedding, Billy Idol.
Kelly Ripa
Oh. Oh, that's a good one.
Rob Lowe
But I like obscure 80s one hit wonders.
Kelly Ripa
Yeah, we love that.
Rob Lowe
Like Indiana Wants Me. Do you remember that song?
Kelly Ripa
No.
Henry Winkler
How does it go?
Kelly Ripa
Sing it for us.
Rob Lowe
Indiana Wants Me. Lord, I can't go back there.
Kelly Ripa
Rob Lowe has a good voice. I still don't know the song.
Rob Lowe
It Never Rains in California.
Kelly Ripa
It's a good one.
Henry Winkler
How's that one go?
Kelly Ripa
Oh, Jen wants you to sing that song.
Rob Lowe
Got on board of westbound 7 47. You know that one? It never rains in California.
Henry Winkler
Oh, yeah, yeah.
Rob Lowe
It pours and it pours.
Albert Bianchini
Oh, it's so good.
Kelly Ripa
Oh, Rob Low's a singer, by the way.
Rob Lowe
I'm sure my favorite, though, if I have to do one, is Werewolves of London.
Kelly Ripa
Oh, it's a good one. Go ahead, sing it. Just get to the. Get to the Howling.
Rob Lowe
No, no, the best part is little old lady got mutilated late last night. Werewolves of London. Again.
Jan Chalet
So good.
Kelly Ripa
Yeah, it's so good.
Rob Lowe
By the way, I had a karaoke. I had a lot for my 50th and 60th birthdays.
Kelly Ripa
Two parties I was not invited to. Jan, you're on the new list for 70.
Henry Winkler
I heard about that.
Kelly Ripa
I've got to hang around for 70 now. I could go at any time. Rob.
Rob Lowe
No, not nonsense. I did a live band karaoke, and we had. At one point, we had two, count them, two super bowl halftime performers. Katy Perry and Adam Levine. Good Charlotte and. And my stupid face up there doing live band karaoke. It was sick.
Kelly Ripa
Wow. But, like, does anybody else want to participate after you have all of those people up there performing?
Rob Lowe
Well, that's my favorite part of it.
Kelly Ripa
They're like.
Rob Lowe
They come off and like. And now. And now it's. Here's Rob's high school friend who lives in Idaho. Give it up for him.
Kelly Ripa
Rob, who is your dream co star.
Rob Lowe
I have so many of them.
Kelly Ripa
Give me one. Give me the top one that comes to your mind.
Rob Lowe
Oh, Daniel Day Lewis, best actor working.
Kelly Ripa
That's a good one.
Rob Lowe
I would love to. I would love to attempt, Attempt to throw down in a two shot with him.
Kelly Ripa
You know, be great about Daniel Day Lewis, too, is not only could you act with him, then he can make you a pair of shoes when he's done. Because he's a cobbler.
Rob Lowe
He's a cobbler.
Kelly Ripa
Isn't that crazy?
Rob Lowe
Always be cobbling. Always cobbling.
Kelly Ripa
And you could, like, crochet him something like a poncho, and he could make you a pair of shoes.
Rob Lowe
A beanie. I feel like he's a beanie guy.
Kelly Ripa
A beanie. Make him a beanie. All right, Jan wants me to get to your drag performer name. Now, remember, your drag name is the first. First pet you've ever owned and the street you grew up on. Go.
Rob Lowe
Amazing. It's. You know what? It's really. It's amazing. Ready? Ladies and gentlemen, put your hands together for Omali Aberdeen.
Kelly Ripa
O' Malley. Aberdeen is a good name.
Albert Bianchini
As heard at next year's Sausage Fest.
Kelly Ripa
Oh. So, yes, that's your introduction. Write that down. Forget.
Rob Lowe
Do you know that I auditioned to be a drag queen in that movie, too? Wong Fu, do you know this movie?
Kelly Ripa
How did you not. Yeah, how did you not get that?
Rob Lowe
And it's funny. This interview has a way of circling back on itself. When I had my legs fully shaved, when I was in my Azedine Alaia black skimpy dress with spike heels and my red wig.
Kelly Ripa
Gorgeous.
Rob Lowe
And my makeup done by my wife, walking down the street in New York, people were like, I was getting wolf whistles and I looked like Jane Fonda. I looked exactly like Jane Fonda in China Syndrome.
Kelly Ripa
Yeah. Because sometimes. Here's the thing, Jan Albert, Sometimes really breathtakingly handsome men such as Rob Lowe are odd looking women. And sometimes it's like these really strange looking men that are gorgeous. Women like men that you wouldn't think twice about and you put them in a wig and makeup and you're like, jesus Christ, where did you come from?
Rob Lowe
Well, I wanted to. I wanted to. I thought, I have this in a lock. There's no way I don't get this part. And they gave it to. And God rest him. Patrick Swayze, who looked like a dude wearing makeup.
Kelly Ripa
Right. I was gonna say Swayze is one of those guys. He's like handsome, but you put makeup on him and he looks like a dude wearing makeup. You've got the right bone structure. And Cheryl as your secret weapon, knowing how to bring out the feminine femininity in your face.
Rob Lowe
Yeah, I definitely went for it. For sure.
Kelly Ripa
They really missed out. Okay, so what are you scared of?
Rob Lowe
I'm scared of jumping out of an airplane. Oh, I'm not. Look, and I love. I will heli ski. I will jump off things into lakes and rivers and bridges and like, I'm a thrill seeker. I'm not one of those. There's something about that that I should like. My son's done it. People I know who are way more scaredy catty than me have done it. I have innate fear of doing that. And I don't know if it's a past life. I don't know what it is. But I also am at a point in my life where I don't need to prove anything to myself. I'm not doing. It won't be happening.
Kelly Ripa
It's a risk reward thing. I don't see the reward versus the risk. And I'm not even sure I would jump out of a plane if the plane was going down. I mean, that's how afraid I am of jumping out of a plane.
Rob Lowe
Yeah, I don't like it.
Kelly Ripa
You know what I mean? To me, it just seems not like a smart call. And all of my friends have done it. I will never do it. I gotta tell you. I just love talking to you.
Rob Lowe
Yeah.
Kelly Ripa
I really. This has been a pleasure, an absolute privilege to talk to you and I encourage our listeners. Don't forget to check out Rob's Smokin Hot podcast. It's called say it with me. Literally. Literally. Don't Forget to watch 911 Lone Star Mondays on Fox, as well as the floor, of course, Wednesdays on Fox.
Rob Lowe
Let's go.
Kelly Ripa
Two weeks.
Rob Lowe
Two days a week. Two days a week.
Kelly Ripa
And you can stream Rob Lowe on every, every other show on Netflix. Anyway, that's all the time we have for Rob Lowe, everybody. Rob Lowe, thank you so much. Thank you as always.
Rob Lowe
Love you as always.
Kelly Ripa
I love that Rob Lowe. Hey, Roz. Roz. Give us like a sexy sigh for Rob Lowe.
Henry Winkler
Oh, God, I can't do that.
Kelly Ripa
Give us.
Albert Bianchini
Just do it.
Kelly Ripa
Just say young blood. Young blood.
Henry Winkler
Without laugh. I can't do without laughing.
Kelly Ripa
Like, if I sounded like Roz, would Rob Low love me. Okay, up next is the nicest man on the planet. Yes, the Fonz himself, Henry Winkler. So stick around. We're going to be joined for a rapid fire with Henry Winkler. You'll get to hear what he has to say when we return. You want to know what makes a great gift? Jan Chalet
Yes.
Kelly Ripa
Childhood celebrity crush.
Jan Chalet
There was an actress on Johnny Yuma starring Nick Adams. Lee Merriweather, I think, was the actress. She was the guest star that week. And when I saw the screen, I had to change my pants.
Kelly Ripa
I worked with Lee Merriweather, too, and I loved her. I worked with her on All My Children Is the gift that keeps on giving. I've worked with so many great people on that show.
Jan Chalet
Yeah.
Kelly Ripa
Okay. What posters did you have on your wall growing up?
Jan Chalet
All right. My parents did not allow me to have a poster. There is nothing on the wall. I couldn't have a paint job again if I left the tape on the wall. I had a Victrola. I had a bed that. That folded back into the wall in my very small room in the apartment.
Kelly Ripa
Is that how they punished you? They made you go to bed and fold you into the wall?
Jan Chalet
You know what? I wondered why my mother would lift the bed up with me. But I listened to Harry Belafonte and Frank Sinatra and at that time, it was the only song I picked to click Run Away by Del Shannon. I knew it was going to be a hit.
Kelly Ripa
Who was your first kiss?
Jan Chalet
Susan Rosenbaum. Under the stairway in the backstairs of my building. I was in the fourth grade and it took me quite a negotiation.
Kelly Ripa
So what? Tell me about the negotiation.
Jan Chalet
I. I only remember that it happened. I don't remember the sensation.
Henry Winkler
Was she at PS 87 with you?
Jan Chalet
She was, yeah.
Henry Winkler
My kids went there.
Jan Chalet
Oh, my God. Oh, here's A great story PS87. So I'm at an award show and there is Timothy Chalamet. And I went up to him and I said, I just have to tell you, I think you are really wonderful. And I'm so happy to tell you that in person. He said, when I was in the fourth grade, you came to PS 87 and you had an assembly and read Hank Zipser. I was in the audience.
Kelly Ripa
Isn't that amazing? Wow.
Henry Winkler
You're like a legend there. All the kids talk about you.
Kelly Ripa
Yeah, of course. Oh, my God.
Jan Chalet
That was a incredible.
Kelly Ripa
Who was your favorite teacher growing up?
Jan Chalet
Oh, okay. In College? Charlotte Lundgren. Dr. Lundgren was my English teacher. She understood me. She got me. I, I loved her until her very recent death. I spoke to her on the phone all the time. She took up painting and she sent me a watercolor of a trout.
Kelly Ripa
A trout.
Jan Chalet
Because I love to trout. Trout fishing.
Kelly Ripa
Do you ever go trout fishing with Jimmy Kimmel?
Jan Chalet
I went once. Now, he is a great fly fisher person.
Kelly Ripa
Yeah.
Jan Chalet
And I, I, I adore him. I really do. So we're, we're in the boat together because he built a lodge in Idaho.
Kelly Ripa
Yeah.
Jan Chalet
To the nines. It is spectacular. And I went from our lodge because we've been going there for 10 years and I can't just switch.
Kelly Ripa
Right.
Jan Chalet
These people have taken such good care of me. At the lodge on the Palisades, I went to Jimmy's down the road. We went fishing all day long. I still am. I am, I am in the aura of that day.
Kelly Ripa
He's such a good guy.
Jan Chalet
Good guy.
Kelly Ripa
I like the idea of the two of you together. It feels like he's very generous. He's the most generous, oh, my goodness. I've ever met.
Jan Chalet
Yeah.
Kelly Ripa
He's a kind, kind person. Okay. Who, what was your first concert?
Jan Chalet
Janis Joplin.
Kelly Ripa
Oh, my God.
Jan Chalet
First year at Yale Drama School. On the football field in the rain. Janis Joplin.
Kelly Ripa
That's such a good one. Now I think Henry wins. We've had some good ones, but you may win. That's a winner. Winner, winner.
Jan Chalet
Oh, my goodness. And I had no idea, actually who. And, and, and this, this powerful human being who I was going to see.
Kelly Ripa
Yeah. Wow.
Jan Chalet
Just before I left for California, before I got on the plane, September 18, 1973, I went to see the Stones. And I sat in the last row of the Madison Square Garden. It was me. And right next to me was God. That, that's how high up I was.
Kelly Ripa
Right.
Jan Chalet
And I'm telling you, he glanced in my area and his power was so incredible, I thought for sure he was looking directly at me.
Kelly Ripa
Yeah, incredible. You know, I. I raced in it in the. This 10K on Easter Sunday.
Jan Chalet
Yeah.
Kelly Ripa
This is like, what, 10 years ago now? 10 years ago. And not because I'm a sadist, but because I. I had heard that when you cross the finish line, Mick Jagger gives you a beer. And it is true. As you cross the finish line, he hands you the beer and. And he says, all right, all right, all right. That's what he just keeps saying. Every person that crosses, he's just handing out beers, and he's, all right, all right. So everybody's like, have you ever met Mick Jagger? And I go, yes, just once at a 10K. And they're like, a 10K. And I go, when you cross the finish line, he gives you a beer, and they go, what did he say to you? And I said. He said, all right. That's what he said to every single person.
Jan Chalet
Okay, so I'm in a great sushi restaurant here in la Matsuhisa.
Kelly Ripa
Oh, yeah.
Jan Chalet
Oh, my God.
Kelly Ripa
It's famous.
Jan Chalet
Famous. So I'm there having lunch, and I walk out and sitting at a table, Mick Jagger and I guess his girlfriend. And I stopped, and I get tongue tied with musicians, and I said, mick, oh, my goodness. I. I have every one of your albums. I just. I love. I'm just so happy to see you. And he turned his head, looked up at me, and said, henry. And I slunk out of. And I went, oh, my God, I'm disturbing you. I'm so sorry. Pretend I'm not here. I'm now going to leave. And as I left, this group of businessmen near the door said, you just had a conversation with Mick Jagger. And I went, yes, I did.
Kelly Ripa
Yes, you did. He called you Henry.
Jan Chalet
He did.
Kelly Ripa
He called me. All right. That's amazing. That's incredible. And that's not disturbing. That's just British Henry.
Jan Chalet
Yeah, I know, but I thought, oh, my God, I'm disturbing him.
Kelly Ripa
Do you have a Go to karaoke song? Do you sing the Rolling Stones? Is there a song that you.
Jan Chalet
I don't. I depend upon the kindness of strangers, you know, Like Brandi Carlisle. I've seen her twice now.
Kelly Ripa
Yeah.
Jan Chalet
And she had a. A bunch of friends with her on stage. Joni Mitchell was one of them.
Kelly Ripa
Oh, my gosh.
Jan Chalet
Now I've got to hug this woman before I leave the concert. I've only seen her twice. I adore her. I hug her. I get my. I weasel my way backstage, and I see In a room just to my right, Joni Mitchell. And I walk In, I said, Ms. Mitchell, I'm Henry Winkler. She said, I know who you are. I said, oh, let me introduce you to my wife, Stacy. She said, oh, so you're the one who married the Fonz. I thought, okay, that's it. Wow.
Kelly Ripa
That is amazing. That's an incredible. I mean, what's so funny to me is that you are still amazed that people know who you are.
Albert Bianchini
That's.
Jan Chalet
I am. I am.
Kelly Ripa
Do you have a hidden talent that we don't know about?
Jan Chalet
Maybe. Maybe. The only thing that comes to mind maybe, is teaching. There's a thing called the Vulture Festival here in la. It is mostly online, but once a year, they have this big get together for the public, and it's in November. And I teach once a year there. Kids. Everybody comes with a monologue or a scene, and I watch as many as I can. And I'm not sure I know what I'm saying, but I tell them exactly how I'm feeling about what they're doing.
Kelly Ripa
Incredible.
Jan Chalet
Maybe that's it.
Kelly Ripa
You're the opposite of Gene Kucine.
Jan Chalet
Yeah. He knew nothing.
Kelly Ripa
Yeah, right. But I did love his. I want to be in his acting class. For some reason, I want to just experience that. Acting class.
Jan Chalet
Yeah.
Kelly Ripa
What's the first thing you do when you wake up in the morning?
Jan Chalet
Feed the dogs, make coffee. And I play the same video game for the last, I want to say, maybe 30 years. It's called Zuma Z U M A.
Kelly Ripa
Okay.
Jan Chalet
And I have yet to beat all the levels. And I. Every morning I try until I realize, nope, not this morning.
Kelly Ripa
Not this morning.
Jan Chalet
Oh. I get coffee from a great roaster in New York City, B.B. neuwirth's husband. It's called Gotham Roasters.
Kelly Ripa
And the coffee, you have it. You have it sent out?
Jan Chalet
I do. I do. It is unbelievable.
Kelly Ripa
Do you and Stacy have, like. Do you bring Stacy coffee?
Jan Chalet
I do. Hers has to be piping hot, a lot of heavy cream, and four Splendas.
Kelly Ripa
She sounds like me. Minus the Splendas. I do a lot of cream. Piping hot. No Splenda.
Jan Chalet
Ah.
Kelly Ripa
I don't. I. I don't like any sweetener. Sweetener in my coffee. But Mark and I have a routine. So Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, he brings me coffee. Thursday, Friday, Saturday, I bring him coffee. And Sunday, we go down and we have coffee together.
Jan Chalet
Can I tell you something? There is something so touching about what you just said. That you share the days of the week, and on Sunday, you Do it together.
Kelly Ripa
Yeah.
Jan Chalet
I, I, I have to say, I love hearing that, that story.
Kelly Ripa
It's, it's nice to, you know.
Jan Chalet
Yeah, it is.
Kelly Ripa
To.
Jan Chalet
Yeah.
Kelly Ripa
Split the chores.
Jan Chalet
Yeah.
Kelly Ripa
What's the one expensive thing that you purchased for yourself when you first started making money? Was there, like, a big purchase?
Jan Chalet
Clothing.
Kelly Ripa
Clothing.
Jan Chalet
I'm a clothes horse. And my, my daughter says, oh, dad, what a beautiful new pair of shoes. They look exactly like the ones you just bought, but I. Suede shoes, cashmere sweaters. I have a collection of polo.
Kelly Ripa
Who's your favorite. Who's your favorite cashmere sweater maker?
Jan Chalet
I, I would have to say polo. I would have to say polo. And I have every color. Some colors I've duplicated, and they are like my uniform.
Kelly Ripa
Yeah. So you like a thin knit?
Jan Chalet
I like a thin knit.
Kelly Ripa
Yes.
Jan Chalet
Cable knit?
Kelly Ripa
Yes.
Jan Chalet
Crew neck.
Kelly Ripa
You're so chic.
Jan Chalet
Thank you.
Kelly Ripa
You're a classic. That's what you are. What's the best advice you ever got?
Jan Chalet
Oh, the best advice, I think the best advice I've ever gotten and I give is get up and keep moving forward.
Kelly Ripa
It's such great advice, and it's applicable. Applicable to everything and everybody.
Jan Chalet
Yes.
Kelly Ripa
It's really true.
Jan Chalet
Yes. Let me ask you a question. Do you go to the theater?
Kelly Ripa
I do all the time.
Jan Chalet
What is, what is, like, your favorite recently?
Kelly Ripa
I tell you, my, My friend is going into previews with his new musical that I saw in London.
Jan Chalet
Yes.
Kelly Ripa
It's called the Eyes of Tammy Faye. And it's the Tammy Faye Baker musical written by Jake Shears and Elton John, and it is brilliant.
Jan Chalet
Well, I, I have to say that I love going to the theater. The last thing I saw was appropriate. Appropriate.
Kelly Ripa
Oh, appropriate is amazing. Sarah Paulson. Oh, my gosh. She really. I, I loved. I saw that by myself. I went to see appropriate by myself. That's. Oh, oh. And guess who sat behind me? Me.
Jan Chalet
Who?
Kelly Ripa
Harrison Ford.
Rob Lowe
Oh.
Kelly Ripa
And I never turned around, not once, because I really didn't. Yes. So I was. My girlfriend was, like, eight rows behind me. She just happened to be there. She's like, are you in the theater? And I said, I am. She goes, I'm. I'm like, eight rows behind you. And I go, you're kidding. I go, well, we should have. We should have, like, a bite to eat after this. And she's like, I would love to. She goes, you do realize that Harrison Ford is sitting behind you? And at that moment, I swear I became paralyzed. I could not turn my head. I couldn't move. I started, I developed an anxiety sweat. It was so unnerving to know that Harrison Ford was behind me.
Jan Chalet
Yeah, but what a shot.
Kelly Ripa
Forbid I. God forbid, I had to go to the bathroom. I wouldn't get up. I would just sit there and be uncomfortable the whole time. But it was an amazing, amazing play.
Jan Chalet
Wow.
Kelly Ripa
Anyway, don't forget, pick up Being Henry the Fonz and beyond wherever books are sold.
Jan Chalet
And our. Our 40th children's book for emerging readers. It's called Detective Duck, Volume Two.
Kelly Ripa
Detective Duck, Volume.
Jan Chalet
She's a little duckling and she dreams about being a detective, but she's also an environmentalist. And there is a, like a. An algae that is growing that is making it difficult for all of her friends to breathe in the water, on the water. And a lot of the vegetation is. And they figure out how to solve it.
Kelly Ripa
Incredible. God, thank God for you, Henry. I really enjoy, you know, everything you've ever done in your life. I kept trying to think of one thing that I've not enjoyed that you've done. And I enjoy it. All of it. Also, listeners, if you're listening to this, you probably like to listen to things. I would also recommend because I do this with a lot of people. I enjoy the audio version of your book because I like to hear your voice tell the stories. I think it adds a different dimension.
Jan Chalet
Yeah.
Kelly Ripa
Henry, thank you for doing this podcast.
Jan Chalet
Oh, I had the most wonderful time.
Kelly Ripa
We did too. We really appreciate it. And give Stacy a kiss for me. Okay. And give Zoe a kiss for me.
Jan Chalet
And everybody off camera, thank you for being such an unbelievable audience.
Kelly Ripa
Yay. I couldn't have said it better myself. Bye, Henry. Oh, that Henry. Henry is everything and more. So check out his memoir, Being the Fonz and beyond, and his adorable new children's book, Detective Duck. Okay, Albert, Jan, Jan, Albert, what's next?

Henry Winkler
Okay, we have some of the Ask Cali questions for you, so buckle up. Here's the. The first one.
Kelly Ripa
Okay.
Henry Winkler
Okay. This is from it's just Carmen. My husband doesn't really help with the baby no matter how many times I say something. What should I do?
Kelly Ripa
Hand him the baby and leave the room?
Henry Winkler
Yeah. Do you know what? I heard that today was National Men's Day and they were talking about on the radio, and I was like, what is Men's Day? And they're like, well, we should honor the dads that, like, spend time with their kids. I'm like, that's ridiculous.
Kelly Ripa
Honors.
Henry Winkler
That's called Father's Day.
Kelly Ripa
That's called Father's Day. Which we can all agree is most days. You know, this is because I learned this too late. I did not establish healthy boundaries with Mark. And so I too, found myself doing the lion's share of everything, particularly when the kids were young and small. But whatever your husband's strong suits are, I would exploit them. So, you know, Mark is a really good organizer. Mark is really good at keeping schedules. Mark is really good at fixing things. So I would assign him jobs because he was really not helpful when the kids were small. But he, he became way more helpful when they were older.
Henry Winkler
Oh, yeah.
Kelly Ripa
Don't you, don't you agree?
Henry Winkler
Oh, my God.
Kelly Ripa
Glenn has.
Henry Winkler
Glenn spends more time with them than I do at this point. Talks to them more. Yeah, he's on the phone with them.
Kelly Ripa
All day, you know, because I think just, just when men get confident in their parenting is when women start to fray at the edges. Because we've had enough bullshit to deal with. And I think that's when you'll see, you know, unless you want to sit down and say, listen, this is what I expect. We had a child together, and I expect us to raise the child together, which means I take a feeding, you take a feeding. I take a diaper, you take a diaper, or you can bank it all. And then when the shit really hits the fan and they're teenagers and they're difficult, you can let him take over, which is plan B, which is what Jan and I did.
Henry Winkler
Did your wife complain at all that you weren't. You weren't helpful or. You were very helpful.
Kelly Ripa
You were so helpful, Seth.
F
Gosh, that's a great question. Well, I think it's kind of like what you were saying is maybe by default in our. I hate to say traditional roles, but maybe in by default. She's just doing more, man. She's just doing. She's just doing more and more. And once I think you start to get a sense, and it's different for everybody, but for me, it's like, once you start to get a sense, hopefully you get a sense before the top blows off or there's real issues, then you start to, you know. Or if you're communicated with in a way, it's like, hey, I'm reaching the edge here.
Kelly Ripa
Yeah. I also think there is something, you know, they call it a maternal instinct for a reason. It's like, if you hand any woman any baby at any time, she sort of instinctively knows what to do. There are men that are very maternal. Don't get me wrong. I am not trying to say this is solely a female characteristic. I'm just saying I'm speaking in great generalities. So don't me. I don't want to hear your bullshit later on. Not you, just Carmen. Speaking in generalities. If you hand any baby to any woman at any time, mostly she just knows what to do. Whereas a man will sometimes, in my experience, act as if it potentially is an atomic weapon. And they seem paralyzed with fear when they're young.
F
I'm not sure what it was for you guys, but, like, my son is just within the last couple of years, really started to, like, be interested in me. Like, really start to, like, it was all mom. Like, all mom and understandable. Awesome. So, like, the more that. That kind of happens, I think there's another natural cycle, at least for us, that starts to take over. Where it's like there's a feedback. There's a positive feedback loop. For me that maybe wasn't there so much in the beginning. Was that, like, for y' all?
Kelly Ripa
No, I think that's. That's 100% accurate. I mean, I remember mom was such an overused phrase in our house that even if the kids were talking to dad, they would use the word mom. They would say, mom, Mom, Mom, Mom. And I'm like, that's dad. Who are you trying to talk to? His name is dad, and I'm mom over here.
Henry Winkler
I still get mom a lot.
Kelly Ripa
Yeah, Yeah.
F
I just want to say find the mom.
Kelly Ripa
Yeah.
F
For years, you know, I've heard just. I'm just going to bring that up. This is the perfect time. Just say it again. Because it's worth saying, find the mom.
Kelly Ripa
Find the mom. I always go back to the time Joaquin. Everybody knows this story. There was a time. Joaquin was a middle schooler, and he was at a gym downtown. He was training, and. And he realized quickly that he had no money and he was dying of thirst. He had just left the gym. He didn't have any water. He left his water bottle. He used to be a very forgetful kid, and he now realizes that he's gotta, like, walk home because he doesn't have any money. And he stopped a woman on the street and he said, I'm so sorry to bother you, but I just left the gym. I forgot. I forgot my wallet. I don't have any money and I'm dying of thirst. Could I borrow $2 for a bottle of water or whatever? And she took him into the deli and gave him. Brought him. Bought him a water. And he said, I'll pay you back if you give me your address. My mom will pay you back. And she was like, that's okay. I don't mind buying you a water. And I said to him, how did you know to do that? And he said to me, you always said, find a mom or find somebody you suspect is a mom. And he goes, I just walked up to the most mom looking person I could find. And she. And you were right. She took care of me.
Albert Bianchini
That's amazing.
Kelly Ripa
Isn't that amazing?
Albert Bianchini
I love that.
Kelly Ripa
So funny.
Albert Bianchini
All right, the next one is from Juliana Kidd, artist. How do you find friends at 45?
Kelly Ripa
Oh, that's so interesting. Finding friends at 45. Well, first of all, you have to have, like, a vacancy sign in your window, if you know what I'm saying. Like, you have to be receptive to meeting new people. I'm always surprised at my ability to have new friends because I always joke around that I'm like, there's a no vacancy sign. I'm not interested in meeting new people. And then I meet new people and I'm blown away at my capacity to meet and befriend new people. I think at 45, I don't know where you live and I don't know like what your surrounding area is, but I would join a thing. If you knit, join a knitting club. If there is a book club, find out where it meets. If you go to church, go to church and volunteer for something, that is how you meet people. I don't believe in apps. I think I believe that social media is the downfall of civilization and why people can't meet each other. Having said that, I do hope everyone downloads this episode wherever they get their podcast. But I think that the best way is to get out there and join a thing it forces you to be around. And I'm not saying join a thing like join a tattoo club if you're not into tattoos. You know what I'm saying? Find something that you're interested and join that group and you'll be around other people that are like minded or have a common interest and you can very quickly make friends that way.
Henry Winkler
Yeah, it was so crazy because when I. You were talking about like the no vacancy sign. When I went to move to New Jersey during the pandemic, I was like, I don't need to make any friends out here. I don't want to make any friends out here. I have my friends. And I went to a dog park and I happened to run into these two girls who have become not only friends, they've become family to me in the last few years. I mean, we do all of our holidays together, we travel together, and I was like, I didn't even know I had the capacity for this. But it's, I think when you make friends that late in life, you kind of already know who you are and you kind of, you know, then you can share some real interests together versus when you met in high school or college. Like you've already become who you are. So then you can really, like, enjoy. I have a lot of friends from high school and college that I don't even want in my life anymore. They're toxic. But these are friends. Like I chose now at being older. I mean, I wasn't 45, I was a little older, but still, like, I chose them because I don't need the weeds, you know, Like, I just want good people in my life.
Kelly Ripa
Yes, that is. That's also. If you're 45 years old, here is my advice to you. Do not suffer. If somebody appears toxic, they are, in fact toxic. I am one of these people that, you know me, you know me. I will try to. I will try to figure out a way to give a person the benefit of the doubt until it starts harming me, you know, and it's much easier to just. If some. If you go to said group, said book club, said pottery lessons, said knitting club, and somebody strikes you as toxic, strike them and move along and find a new group, Find another group of people. You don't need to swim in a toxic pond.
Albert Bianchini
So, Juliana, adopt a dog. Don't be that creepy person at a dog park without a dog.
Henry Winkler
No, I have a dog. Okay.
Albert Bianchini
Like Jan.
Kelly Ripa
Well, that was fun. What more do you want? You want something else, Jan?
Henry Winkler
No, we're good.
Kelly Ripa
