Welcome to the Martech Podcast, a member of the I Hear Everything Podcast network. In this podcast, you'll hear the stories of world class marketers that you technology to drive business results and achieve career success. Here's the host of the Martech Podcast, Benjamin Shapiro.
I'm Benjamin Shapiro and joining me today is Joyce Gordon, the head of AI at Imperity, which helps unify fragmented customer data to powerful personalized marketing. And Joyce is going to explain how you can combine AI and a unified data foundation to transform your customer experience strategy. Okay, last question for you. How has the life of an AI expert changed since the launch of ChatGPT?
Joyce Gordon
Well, I've been working in AI for about a decade now, back when it used to be spelled ML and at that time my identity was squarely that of a product person. So I was thinking about what are the best models we could build to really positively impact our customers and their marketing. I would say my focus now is much more almost of a designer. How do we reimagine our entire platform with AI, enable new users to enter our platform who might be on the less technical side and really rethink the entire user experience?
Benjamin Shapiro
I feel like you went from okay, we've got the biggest brain in the room, let's put them in the quarter and have them do math stuff and figure out how to optimize things to. Now all of a sudden anybody with artificial intelligence is put on a pedestal in terms of tell me how our entire operation should go. So do you feel like your job is becoming much more the center focus of the company as opposed to like an operational role?
Joyce Gordon
I would say AI is at the center of Amperity's entire product strategy now. So I'm working across every product and engineering team to really make sure we're delivering an experience that's going to be AI first. So it's much more cross functional and I would say much more focused on product strategy than previously.
Benjamin Shapiro
All right, outside of Imperity and your refocusing of the role and the importance of artificial intelligence, when you go to a cocktail party and you tell people that you work in AI instead of machine learning, are they like super interested now?
Joyce Gordon
Yeah, people's eyes used to glaze over when I mentioned I worked in machine learning before, but it turns out everyone wants to chat about AI because everyone has used ChatGPT and most people are blown away by it.
Benjamin Shapiro
No, I'm excited that the spotlight went more towards your favor and you're handling it all very well.
Joyce Gordon
Nice for a math nerd like myself.

Podcast Summary: MarTech Podcast ™ // Marketing + Technology = Business Growth
Episode Title: How has the life of an AI expert changed since the launch of ChatGPT?
Release Date: July 4, 2025
Host: Benjamin Shapiro
Guest: Joyce Gordon, Head of AI at Imperity
In this insightful episode of the MarTech Podcast ™, host Benjamin Shapiro welcomes Joyce Gordon, the Head of AI at Imperity. Imperity specializes in unifying fragmented customer data to deliver powerful, personalized marketing solutions. The conversation delves into the transformative impact of ChatGPT on the lives of AI experts, exploring shifts in roles, responsibilities, and industry perceptions.
Shift from Product to Design Focus
Joyce Gordon shares her decade-long journey in the AI field, highlighting a significant transition in her professional focus:
“I’ve been working in AI for about a decade now, back when it used to be spelled ML and at that time my identity was squarely that of a product person.”
[01:41]
Initially, Joyce concentrated on developing machine learning models aimed at enhancing customer marketing strategies. However, with the advent of advanced AI technologies like ChatGPT, her role has evolved substantially. She now identifies more as a designer, focusing on reimagining Imperity’s entire platform to be AI-first. This involves enabling users with varying technical backgrounds to engage seamlessly with AI-driven tools, thereby transforming the overall user experience.
“My focus now is much more almost of a designer. How do we reimagine our entire platform with AI, enable new users to enter our platform who might be on the less technical side and really rethink the entire user experience?”
[01:41]
From a Niche to the Core of Operations
Benjamin Shapiro probes Joyce on whether AI’s prominence has shifted her role from an operational capacity to a central focus within the company:
“I feel like you went from okay, we've got the biggest brain in the room, let's put them in the quarter and have them do math stuff and figure out how to optimize things to. Now all of a sudden anybody with artificial intelligence is put on a pedestal in terms of tell me how our entire operation should go.”
[02:11]
Joyce confirms this transformation, emphasizing that AI is now integral to Amperity’s (likely a typo for Imperity’s) entire product strategy. Her responsibilities have broadened, requiring her to collaborate across all product and engineering teams to ensure that every facet of the platform embodies an AI-first approach. This shift underscores the increasing importance of AI in driving business growth and enhancing customer experiences.
“AI is at the center of Amperity's entire product strategy now. So I'm working across every product and engineering team to really make sure we're delivering an experience that's going to be AI first. So it's much more cross functional and I would say much more focused on product strategy than previously.”
[02:36]
From Niche Interest to Mainstream Fascination
Benjamin shifts the conversation to explore how public perception of AI has changed, particularly in social settings:
“All right, outside of Imperity and your refocusing of the role and the importance of artificial intelligence, when you go to a cocktail party and you tell people that you work in AI instead of machine learning, are they like super interested now?”
[02:54]
Joyce reflects on the growing commonplace interest in AI compared to machine learning:
“Yeah, people's eyes used to glaze over when I mentioned I worked in machine learning before, but it turns out everyone wants to chat about AI because everyone has used ChatGPT and most people are blown away by it.”
[03:08]
This shift indicates that AI, fueled by accessible technologies like ChatGPT, has captured the public’s imagination, making it easier for AI professionals to engage and communicate their work to a broader audience.
“Nice for a math nerd like myself.”
[03:25]
The episode concludes with Benjamin expressing appreciation for Joyce's insights and highlighting the evolving landscape of AI in marketing technology. Joyce's transformation from a machine learning product specialist to a central AI strategist at Imperity exemplifies the broader industry shifts catalyzed by the rise of conversational AI tools like ChatGPT.
