Good evening and welcome to Monsters Among Us. I am your guide, Derek Hayes. Thank you, folks for stopping by. I have a great show lined up for tonight. Now, it is a Tuesday, so of course tonight's episode will be themed. And this one is yet another in a long line of geographically specific programs. I plan to do all 50 states and many of our neighbors before we're done. And it's with one of our greatest names that we focus tonight's beam on a place of rugged beauty, a land of extremes, and a place where, I assume, everything tastes like maple syrup. Oh, Canada. And it's with a bit of a ghost story that we began here this evening. Please join me in welcoming Dana from Canada to tonight's.
Hammer
Hi, Derek. This is Dana from Manitoba, Canada. I have a story for you from around 2016 that happened to my boyfriend and I. At the time, we lived in a small city called Winkler, and we had just bought our very first home together. It was a starter home, brand new. We were the first ones to live in this house. And the entire development was brand new. And all the houses were connected by twos, by their garages. So there's the house, garage, garage, house. That's how they were separated. So it was a two story house. So when you go up the stairs, our bedroom door was immediately to the left. So as soon as you get to the top, it's right there. One night we were going to bed. My boyfriend was most likely already asleep. Her dog was in the room sleeping at the foot of our bed. And I wasn't quite asleep yet, probably reading or on my phone or something. And then all of a sudden I heard what sounded like footsteps running from the bottom of the stairs to the top. And of course I was terrified at thinking, is somebody in the house? Is there an intruder? And I sat there frozen. And nothing. There was nobody. And then it happened again. His footsteps from the bottom of the stairs, running all the way to the top. So of course I was scared. And I woke up my boyfriend and told him what I was hearing. And we were both listening, and we heard it again. It happened several more times. I don't recall if the dog heard this, but we definitely heard something. Eventually, it stopped. And, you know, we checked the house. There was nobody there, nobody in the rooms, nobody downstairs. And we just went to bed. The strangest thing about it is that it happened the whole time we lived there. Almost every couple of nights, we would hear footsteps running up the stairs probably about six, seven times a night. And then it would stop, and we were stumped. We could never figure out what it was. Like I said, our houses were connected with our neighbor, but they were connected by the garage. We never heard them in the evening, in the daytime, never heard a peep from them, even though we knew that the guy that lived there was built furniture in the garage. We never heard power tools. We never heard nothing. So we're sitting there going, what could this be? It usually happened around midnight as well. So it was unlikely that somebody was working in their garage around midnight. And that aside, it sounded like it was in the house. It did not sound like something muffled coming from outside. It sounded like somebody was on those stairs. The stairs were above a very small laundry room storage space. We never ran the dryer or the washing machine in the evening, at night. And even if it had been the dryer, it was too consistent. These were steps. That's what they sounded like, steps. Not banging or anything. Every time it happened, I was scared. But there was never anything. We were the very first people to live in this house, so I never thought it could be haunted. But we couldn't find an explanation for it. I mean, there could have been something there previously, but when it was developed in 2016, it was just a big field. Never looked like there had been anything there before. And eventually, before we moved, we only lived there for about two years. It stopped happening. So, yeah, I just don't know what it could have been. It was very strange. Anyway, thank you. I love your show. Talk to you again.
Derek Hayes
Thank you, Dana, for the call. Now, I'll tell you what. I can't tell what it was you heard, but I do have a solution to help you ignore sounds like these. Just get yourself a cat. Your new buddy will certainly be sprinting at full speed all throughout the house at all hours of the night. So you'll still hear the sounds, and they'll still be unexplainable, but at the very Least you can blame it on the kitty. Thank you, Dana, for sharing the call and thanks for kicking us off on this all Canadian episode. Now I'll be right back with more stories from the Frozen Darth and beyond right after these messages. Don't touch that dial.
Dana
You would think so.
Derek Hayes
Very small relative to the amount of and I don't know much put out their own meat on it. Is there anything I could add to this? Now I think for a lot of us Americans, when we think of Canada outside of hockey, good beer and weird french fries, we associate winter in the bitter cold with the country the most, which I guess is fair because it does get pretty cold up there and it certainly does snow up there as well. And that's actually the setting for this next entry. A call from Hammer from of course, Canada.
Unnamed Caller
Hello, Derek, It's Hammer from Central Canada, Canada. I've been a police officer for quite some time. Probably one of the most kind of ongoing stories that I have is the one I'll share with you right now. So nothing recently has happened, but it kind of went on for a while there. So part of being a police officer, sometimes you get called to a crime scene and you gotta hold the crime scene. In this case, there was a suspicious death kind of on the outskirts of town. It's a non residential area. It's kind of a hotel, a museum, a couple things around there. But it's not the kind of place where you just have people walking around in the middle of the night to go to the store or something like that. It's not a residential area. So anyways, a body was found, potentially suspicious kind of thing. So I was to hold the crime scene. I spent my whole night shift there. So basically it's middle of winter, there's a couple feet of snow out there. And I park my patrol vehicle out kind of facing this kind of open field. It's got kind of a forested area with I'd say maybe like a 15 foot wide path that kind of extends down for maybe 150 meters and then kind of opens up into another field again. So I have my patrol vehicle sitting there. I got my takedown lights on, my spotlight on, all pointed into kind of where essentially the scene is. And it's pitch black everywhere else. There's kind of some lights behind me a ways, but I'm sitting out there in a pitch black essentially. So as I'm sitting there, you know, the hours pass and stuff, but I kept having this weird sense that someone was behind my patrol car. And I kept looking over my shoulder. Kept checking my rear view mirrors and of course it's pitch blackout, it's a little bit lit inside my car. I got my computer there and you know, your radio and all the other dash lights and stuff, as much as you turn them down, it still lights up a little bit in the car. So. And there I keep having this weird suspicion that something is behind me or around me. Got out of my car to check a couple times, of course there's nothing. So about 3:00 clock in the morning, I had kind of something strange happen. Like I said, I'm looking down towards the end of this path, it's maybe 150 yards away. And the best I can describe it, moving from left to right across that kind of 15 foot section is I saw what I could best describe as kind of a man on a horse, just kind of cross at the end of the path. And of course like any other city, you know, you don't usually see a man on a horse or a horse at all for that matter, especially not at 3 in the morning through 2ft of snow. So thought that was kind of interesting. The end of my shift comes, I'm relieved by somebody else. And just for the heck of it, I go drive kind of along the freeway so I can see kind of the path where that figure went by. And of course there's no tracks in the snow. So I go home, call her quits for the day. The next night comes and I can hear at exactly 2:36 in the morning I wake up and I hear the front keypad on our door beeping. So beeps about four or five times and then a long beep. Which you only get that if you enter the wrong code or if it times out or something. So I'm kind of laying there thinking, well, I guess our daughter is getting home. She must have had a late night. A couple seconds passes, beep, beep, beep again and another long code. And I thought, okay, well this is weird, you know, entering the code wrong or whatever. So I got up, go to the front door and there's nobody there. So I went back to bed. I thought, there's not much I can do about it. I don't know, maybe somebody was trying our code, trying to get it in the house or whatever. Next morning I'm telling my wife about this. She says, well, you know, why don't you check the doorbell cams? So of course I go check the doorbell cam and exactly 0236 in the morning our doorbell cam went off. So go to check the footage. And it's just a 30 second black segment on our camera. It's like it recorded but you can't view it. So we've had our camera system now. At the time, we might only had it for a couple years, but now we've had the camera system for kind of 10 years or whatever. Anyways, eventually that video ended up coming back after a few days and you could see that it was just blank and you kind of see a flash of light on it. The flash of light is something else that my wife pointed out is we had like a cat and a kitten kind of coming up on our front step for a few days back then. And so I ended up putting a trail cam on our front step down low, just so we could take pictures of the cat because we like animals or whatever. So my wife says, why don't you check the trail cam? What a great idea. So go check the trail cam. And at exactly 0236 it took a picture. But there's nothing on there except for the camera flash from the camera. It's an infrared flash, so it lights up, but it doesn't really emit too much light that person can see or whatever. So thought that was kind of strange. So as time goes on, you know, a couple days later, I'm in the shower during the day. I must have worked night shift or whatever. Nobody else is home, wife and daughter are gone. And I'm in the shower and I can kind of see through the fog shower curtain where you can't really see through it, but you can see silhouettes. I can see someone come into the bathroom. And I said, hello. No answer. Okay, well, I wasn't scared by it or anything. I just figured it was my imagination or whatever. So another couple days go by, I'm in the same shower and I finish up in the shower. I go to reach my arm out to grab my towel off the rack. You see one of those fogged shower curtains where the closer things are to it, the more you can kind of make out in detail. I could see a person's hand, like it looks like a fist right to where I was reaching. And it kind of gave me the impression that, you know, I don't know, maybe someone was trying to hand me my towel kind of thing is what it looked like. Again, I wasn't freaked out by it or anything. I just thought, well, it's kind of weird. And by this time I was already kind of having suspicions that maybe something followed me home or something from that call, you know, Another couple days pass and it's middle winter, so I don't go outside for a cigarette. I go into the garage and have one. So myself and my dog are out in the garage and we have like a McDonald's coffee can or whatever, kind of one of those full size coffee cans sitting out there that we put our cigarette butts in. Or I say. I should say I put my cigarette butts in. And the lid for that thing is your typical lid, you know, 8 inches wide, maybe an eighth of an inch thick or something was laying on the ground just on the concrete floor. So I'm having a smoke, and out of the corner of my eye I see that lid move about three or four inches. So I look at it and of course it's not moving anymore. But I look over at my dog and he's staring at the lid too, like he obviously saw it too. And so we thought, well, you know, again, that's kind of weird. So, you know, another couple days pass or whatever, and I'm at home, you know, must have the day off again. And I go to grab. It's just your typical Starbucks iced coffee that you buy at Costco kind of thing. I went and poured the last glass out of it, set the empty container down on the cupboard and just had the lid kind of sitting on top, not screwed on. So I'm standing in the kitchen and 15 seconds after I poured the coffee, I could hear kind of this popping and rattling. And I started looking around, looking in circles. I saw it was actually the empty coffee jug. The lid was popping off visibly, but you could see it pop off and then sit, rattle and pop off and sit, rattle and pop off and sit again. So I actually videoed it. But I don't know. Who knows? Maybe the coffee thing could be explained by a cold jug being put on a warm counter or room temperature counter. I don't know. But I can't explain the other things. Anyways, I don't know, maybe you'll get some enjoyment out of this call. So take care, Derek.
Derek Hayes
Thank you, Hammer. Now, I'm certainly not an expert, so my opinion isn't all that valuable. But the way the events line up here, Hammer, I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't some sort of attachment that you took home with you that night. I have no issue admitting that the timing here is rather unusual. But I wonder if these things weren't just a giant coincidence. And furthermore, I wonder if you ever would have even noticed these occurrences if you hadn't just had a run in with what you suspect might be a ghost on horseback, no less. Now, once you've had that thought in your head, it's easy to make connections to it. But like I said, even I can admit that the timing is peculiar at the very least. So who knows what it was. But I do know it was a cool story and we thank you again, Hammer, for sharing it. And folks, if you too have a story you would like to share here on the program, call our hotline at 888-6089. That's 888608, Nig HT. Or record your story on your phone or computer and email it to me at Monsters Among Us podcast gmail dot com. And don't forget to have your youngsters call in for Monsters Among Us Junior, our sister program for children that love the paranormal as well. Now, that number is 833 MAU kids. That's 8 3. Now, be sure to get those calls in now because the second season of Monsters Among Us Junior drops in late August or early September. We're still ironing out all the details. Either way, we're all looking forward to hearing from you. Now next up, we have to look up to the sky because Travis saw something strange up there. Take it away, Travis.
Travis
Hey Derek, this is Travis from Nova Scotia. I heard, I think it was season 16 episode 22 about the Triangle UFOs. Mine story is basically the same. This happened at Lance, Nova Scotia. It was probably 1992. I was just a boy doing a paper route at the time. Thumb was just starting to come up and I was delivering the paper and all the hair stood up in the back of my neck. Something just told me to look up. I did and what I saw was a triangular set of lights that pretty much took up the whole sky from what I could see. At the ass end of it was two lights that were kind of spinning around. Across the road there was a post office. The delivery truck was getting there. At that time, one of the lights actually broke off at the back and went towards us. At that time I was just standing still. I couldn't move at all. I gained the guts to just take the paper bag off my shoulder and run. My house actually at the time wasn't that far away. So I was running down the road and I decided to look to the left where it would have been. By this time the sun was pretty much up and I can't even explain how big this triangular UFO was. Anyway, I ran as fast as I could towards home and my mother, who was sleeping in Bed. Woke up out of bed knowing that there was something wrong with me. She had this sense. When I got into the house, I was pretty much in tears because of what I saw. I mean, I was just a young boy at the time. My mom come tearing into the bedroom. What's wrong? I knew there was something wrong with you. I could almost hear you running down the road. So I explained it. And my father at the time was in the kitchen making his breakfast and sort of laughed it off. He went outside, of course, and looked. Of course it was gone. So my mom believes me. I don't know if my dad does even to this day. Still, it was definitely weird. It was definitely triangular. You know, the front of it had about seven to nine lights and then the two in the back that kind of were just spinning around. It was weird and like I said, broke off towards the mail truck. Definitely a bit bizarre. And I hope you can use this information. Love your show. Keep it up. Goodbye.
Derek Hayes
Thank you Travis for calling in. Now this story has a bit of significance to me and I'll tell you why. We hear stories about these mammoth sized Dark Triangle craft all the time. And 99% of those reports seem to come from the U.S. the contiguous U.S. states, to be specific. Now sure, there have been sightings of this craft in places outside the states, but they are rare. I can only think of one instance off the top of my head which would be the Belgium UFO flap of 1989 and 1990. So like I said, this story holds a bit of significance as one of the 1% of calls that take place outside of the US a number that I just made up here on the spot. But based on my observation, I don't think it's that far off. But before I moved on from this story, I did a quick Google search and it turns out that I'm wrong. Nova Scotia, the location of Hammer's experience, has had many Black triangle reports. If you just Google search Nova Scotia Black Triangle ufo, you'll see exactly what I'm talking about. Now, since this is a Tuesday installment, we can't do a deep dive here. We have to keep going. But I will do this. If you've seen a large black hovering triangle near Nova Scotia, give me a call at 888-6089 and that will give me an excuse to circle back on all this activity. Until then, however, we appreciate the call. Travis, I have zero doubt that these black triangles are real. So I love receiving any information I can get my hands on about them. So thank you again for Taking the time to call in. And speaking of UFOs in Canada, according to the National UFO Reporting Center, Canada has roughly 6,200 UFO reports on record with them. And that's going back to 1995. And here are the top three locations in Canada if you wish to encounter one of these unidentified objects. At number three, with 742 sightings is Alberta. Coming in second with 1250 reports is British Columbia. And in the top spot with 2,651 reported sightings is Ontario, Canada. No, Nova Scotia, though, unfortunately. Alright folks, when I come back, a story that our editor called amazing. But first, another quick word from tonight's sponsors.

Quickly, we got, we got a quick, quick. Now let's get back into the action and back up to Canada. Please welcome Laura to the show.
Dana
Hi Derek and Sarah. This is Laura from Vancouver, Canada, calling to talk about a haunting that happened to me in 1999 in a nearby town called New Westminster. I had moved into a house that was a old house in New Westminster. And in fact I was renting a room in the house from my friend's mom who was also renting other rooms in the house to other people around my age and other students. And it was a great place to live. And I had moved in. I had taken a room on the top floor. And my first or second night that I was living there, I had come down the hallway to go and use the bathroom in this house. The bathroom is located in the back of this large room on the top floor of the house that was purposely being used as a sewing room, but may have been used for any other reason prior. And there was a rocking chair in the room. So when I left the bathroom in the middle of the night to go back to my room, there was a visible girl, a little blonde girl sitting in the chair, very clear human form, little girl with blonde hair and a white nightgown. And she was not happy to see me. So I was startled and I ran back down to my room and closed the door. And she began to appear to me in my room, at the end of my bed, in the hallway, in that chair constantly, always in the evening, at night. And if she wasn't doing that, she'd be running up and down the stairs incessantly. Thump, thump, thump, thump, thump, thump, thump, thump, thump, thump all night. And I was the only person that could hear the thumping on the stairs. But other people had seen her. So needless to say, this was really Jarring and very scary. And I wasn't sure how long I was going to stay living in this house. And I started to take note of some other things. That may not be connected. But made me feel like it was a little bit creepy. For instance, if I went down into the basement. And would come up the stairs to go back onto the main floor. The door that I would have to open if I was coming up the stairs to go onto the main floor. Had what seemed like scratch marks on the back of the door. And they were very creepy. And the stairs are very narrow. So I couldn't imagine a situation where a dog would stand up on his hind legs and scratch that door. It would almost need the stability of a human standing upright. To scratch on the door at the location and the way it was situated. So there were some clues that the house was a little bit strange. But whenever I was in the kitchen on the main floor of the house, in the back of the house, I never felt odd. I felt totally at ease. So eventually, I was sleeping at this house. And I had a dream one night. And in the dream, this little girl who'd been haunting me came into my dream. And she took me by my hand. And she led me down the hallway of the house and down the stairs and outside. And the outside of the house looked different. In this dream. There was a wraparound veranda that went all the way around the house. And it was a snowy night. I could see in the snow and in the storm. There was an old car driving down the road. And I looked at the car and I looked at the house. And I realized I'm in the 1930s, maybe very, very old time. And the car that was coming toward us looked like an early model vehicle. And the little girl let go of my hand, walked away from me, went out onto the street. And was run over by the car. And the dream ended up. So I was really scared by this. And I thought she showed me why she was still at the home in this dream. Long story short, I did look into it. And I learned through the archives of the city. That this house had been passed down from the family that owned the house. They'd passed it down and sold it. But there was some stories in the archives. That there was a little girl that lived in the house. And she did die on the road by a car. And that there was a renovation to the house. Whereby the wraparound porch was removed. And there was an extension done to the house in the living room instead. And so it verified the story that this dream was true. So hope you like my story. Thanks for listening.
Derek Hayes
Now, this story might help Dana, her first caller out. Perhaps we just figured out what was running up and down her stairs. Maybe it was something similar to Laura's ghost. Speaking of which, thank you Laura for sharing the incredible entry. How tragic and how mysterious and how spooky was that? Now a story like this leaves me with so many questions, but I think the biggest I have is this. Was this the only time you were able to see the dead? Or is this something you have a prior experience with? In other words, Laura, do you have the eyes? Do you have the shine? Do you have the ability to see those that have passed on before us? Now, regardless of your answer, I love this story and I can't thank you enough, Laura, for taking the time to call it in. Thank you again for sharing. Now longtime listeners of this program know that on Tuesdays we share statistics. And that's exactly what I'm about to do. Delaney found the following information from an Ipsos poll from 2021 where 1,001 Canadians were polled age 18 and up. And here are those figures regarding the supernatural. Nearly half of Canadians, 46%, believe in ghosts or supernatural beings, while a further 20% are unsure, leaving just one in three as firm skeptics, Gen Xers, 55% and millennials are the most likely to believe in ghosts, followed closely by Gen Z at 49%, while only one in three boomers, 33%, say they believe in the paranormal. Now Albertans, 57% of them are most likely to believe in the supernatural or ghosts, placing them well ahead of BC at 39% and Ontario at 42, 45% have used a Ouija board, 32% have consulted a psychic, and 20% participated in a seance. Now if you're curious if in the US roughly 41% of people believe in ghosts or spirits, as opposed to Canada's 46%, that's 5% more Canadians that believe than do Americans. And I'll let you decide if that's a large number or not. But either way them's the facts. And a big thanks to Delaney for putting that together. Now, it's not a ghost per se that we have to deal with in this next call, but make no mistake, it'll still make your blood freeze. Please welcome Will to tonight's program.
Will
Hey Derek, longtime listener and first time caller. My name is Will and I'm calling from Canada. I personally am and I've always been into the paranormal and the strange and obviously why your Channel has been such a big appeal to me. So this story is a story that my father told to me a few times, and it's the only story he's ever had of the sort. And he's not the kind to think too much into it or believe too much into it like I do. In any case, this happened in northern Ontario. My father would have been 7 years old. He was born in 53, so let's say 1960. My dad worked on a farm in the summer. He was one of eight children who are all dispersed throughout the summertime to different places, like different farms and homesteads where they would work and it would cover their cost of living and so forth. In any case, my father was staying at a farmer's place. The farmer there had a couple kids of his own, just a little bit younger than my father was at the time. So my father said that he was upstairs and in bed one night and that he woke up and he was frozen and he couldn't move. And he could see shadows of beings. And eventually they started coming closer to him. And there was three beings, two on one side, one on one. And then there was another one in the doorway. And my dad said that they came up to the bed. And despite my dad being extremely scared, he didn't want to be there anymore. He wanted to put himself under the blanket and the covers and just disappear. And he said he was just frozen. And all of a sudden, he says he remembers being able to move and he put the covers over his head and eventually fell asleep. The next morning is where it gets even stranger. My father said that he went downstairs to find the two younger kids outside playing on a cow on one of the fields. The cow is on its back, legs are straight up in the air. And that's it. That's all he remembers, that these two kids were out there playing around and playing on this dead animal. And he doesn't remember much more about the animal itself. However, he does remember that a bunch of military vehicles and military personnel spent the rest of the day at the farm investigating different things. He said specifically there was some kind of circle in one of the fields, but he wasn't very specific about that. I don't think it was a crop circle. I think he meant more like of an indent of where something might have landed or could have been. I don't know. I was always curious about that story because I always wondered if aliens back then were would come and abduct people, of course, for their, you know, curiosity of that's how we look at the nan farm, you know, how's the civilization coming along, you know, and abduct my dad and then have a little bit DNA on his family genes and then, I don't know, maybe come back and abduct me someday. But nothing like that ever happened to me. And in any case, love your channel, love this show. That's fantastic. Thanks, man. Cheers.
Derek Hayes
Thank you. Will, we appreciate you sharing your father's story. You know, this probably could be explained away as sleep paralysis with a few coincidences occurring immediately afterward. And sure, I could argue that that makes sense, but what sort of coincidence would have military vehicles swarming your farm? Something's not adding up here. So for that reason, I'll refrain from making that suggestion and instead just say, what a strange and unusual story, Will. We really appreciate you sharing it here with us.
Hammer
I'm just so glad to see that.
Derek Hayes
Seems like that would be against Last year was the year. Now it may be summer break for the children, but that doesn't mean we can't share a haunted school story. So please welcome Dominique to the program.
Dominique
Hey, it's Dominique from Canada. I have a haunted school story for you. A while ago, I want to say about 10 years or so, I worked in an elementary school in a smaller part of a city. The school was part of a pretty tight knit community and while I don't know how old exactly the main building of the school was because additions were added on later, I can tell you that grandparents that would come pick up their kindergarten grandchildren would say that they went to a school. At one point my role in the school was working in kindergarten and I worked as a teacher's assistant or similar. And the nature of my job was that if you were morning or afternoon, you would either come in early in the morning and work the before school program or you would stay until later after school and work the after school program. During the after school program nothing much happened. Although I noticed my co worker and I, we seemed to not want to be in the building alone. And I remember we would be outside with the students and stuff, just waiting for parents to pick up and we would kind of both hesitate on going in that building alone. One day I had to go into, I think maybe just get band aids or something. And as I was heading into the doorway I looked up and there was this massive black map in the doorway and I stopped and I just walked right back to my co worker and she said, I wondered if you noticed that the building was weird too. Come to find out, she had been noticing Weird things as well. The following year, we both ended up working the before school program. We would get there pretty early, it would still be dark out. And then there would also be the custodian who would open up the building. He was really, really kind, really sweet, and he made it a point of never leaving us alone in the building if there were trade workers there, because he wanted to be there to oversee the work and also, you know, just kind of be a buffer between them and us. So he would always make it a point to mention if someone was coming in the building. I remember one morning I needed something out of the classroom that I worked in. And the building is kind of like a key shape. So our before school program was on the handle of the key. Imagine. And my classroom was at the very top of the key where you would put it into a lock. I had to turn the lights on in this building too. And it was. I drive by this place and it still makes my skin. Girl turned on the lights, went down to my classroom. And as I'm opening the door, I see a man across the hall going to open another door. I say, oh, good morning. And he doesn't look at me, nor does he answer me. I think it's weird. Continue to unlock the door. And as I look up, I see him go through the wall. Following this, there were all kinds of things. We would have phones in the building ring with the name of the room that they were coming out of. Even though we were the only two people in the building. Sometimes we would hear kids running down the hallways and laughing. And when we would look out, there'd be nobody there. And the custodian, the guy who would let us in, said he hated being there by himself. We also had touchscreen phones, like walkie talkies and stuff for the program supervisors to call us on. And if you left them upright on the table, they would start dialing themselves. I have many more where these came from, but take care.
Derek Hayes
Thank you, Dominique. What do I keep telling you guys? Schools are creepy places, especially when they're empty. Now, I had a job in pseudo security when I was in college and part of my duties was to walk around campus locking various administration and education buildings. 100 year old sandstone buildings that look like they're straight out of medieval times. It was freaky to say the least. And I didn't care for doing it. And I always thought I was going to turn a corner and see a haggard old ghost, or worse, some punk stealing a classroom TV or something. I definitely wasn't getting paid enough to deal with that, but either way. I understand, Dominique, but it's not just your school that has the activity now. In my experience, it's most of them. Thank you again, Dominique, for taking the time to share the call. Well, this next call has been bouncing around here for a couple of weeks. It was originally slated to play several episodes ago, but was cut for time. Then I had it slated for later on in the season. But when this All Canada episode sort of materialized, I knew I had to include it. So from, of course, Canada, please welcome Sam to the program.
Sam
Hi Derek, this is Sam calling from New Brunswick, Canada. So ever since I was little, I've been really prone to having dreams and visitations. For example, when I was young, quite young, around five or six, I used to have dreams of the hat man. And it was a reoccurring dream and it happened all the time and it was terrifying. And it didn't go away until we did a. Now excuse my ignorance, it was a native ritual. We burnt sage and I didn't dream of him again after that. And I've had dreams where for example, my stepdad's nephew, who I had never met before, went missing. And I had a dream and I dreamt of exactly where he was and I told his mother that dream and they found him exactly where I had dreamt that they'd find him. So it's been a very reoccurring thing throughout my life that's just scratching the surface. Anyway, so the one I'm calling about today is when I was living at my dad's house. It's an old house, it was upstairs and my dad burnt wood. Heat. That's important because there was nothing in the house that could have caused this other than it being actually real. So my room was at the top of the stairs and down the hallway was where my brother was sleeping. And if you look out my brother's room, you can see my room. And his head was by the door so he could see out Anyway. So my bed had been shaking like violently shaking hard, so bad, like it would wake me up out of a dead sleep. This happened, happened quite often. And one night I had a dream that I was driving down the road to go to my grandparents house and everything was on fire, but everything was also frozen at the same time. And I turned into the driveway and I started freaking out and I ran into their entryway of the house and I told my grandparents, I'm like, hurry, he's coming, he's coming. Get your guns. I opened the door and this thing, this guy was coming up out of the floor at me. The way I can describe him is he had a very gaunt, gaunt looking face. Very curly hair about down to his ears, very greasy hair. But his eyes were silver, but like it just had silver iris and black in the middle and black like where the white parts of the eye are. He had a very horrible smile. It was just awful. And when he was coming up out of the floor at me, I heard this loud high pitched ringing noise. And it was so loud in my dream I covered my ears. And then I woke up and I was covering my ears and my bed was violently shaking again. Anyway, I didn't get much sleep that night and I told my family about it the next day. And my brother, he started freaking out and he said, what time was this? I don't remember the exact time now because I was 18, I'm 33 now. But I remember it being a certain time. And my brother said, there's no way. He said, at that exact time I looked out into the hallway and seen something walking out of your room. I had another dream about him and it's just so terrifying. I can see his face as clear as day. Anyway, fast forward to about a couple years ago. My dad doesn't live there anymore, but my cousin lives there and he has a young son. And so my brother was over there visiting one time and his son mentioned about playing toys with the guy in the closet. And it's the same room that I had stayed in. And my brother was just like the guy in the closet. And he looked over at my cousin who was standing there and he was like motioning to him to like, cut it out, don't talk about it. Like, don't encourage it. Anyway, I know people have had experiences with the hat man, but I don't know if anybody's had experiences with the Silver Eyed Devil. Anyway, any insight or anything would be great. Thank you so much. Keep up the good work.
Derek Hayes
Thank you, Sam, for the phone call. This one has given me Freddy Krueger vibes and to have several other people sort of validate those experiences that'll take events like this right out of dreamland and place them firmly into our reality. But as for this Silver Eyed Devil, this is the first that I've heard of it. But I'll be sure to keep my ears open going forward and I'll be sure to circle back should I find anything. But in the meantime, thank you again, Sam, for sharing the entry and thanks for calling in agency that brought in.

Get you back to being your best. No, I'm not real sure how you want to categorize this next entry, but either way, here's Jay's entry out of Canada.
Chris
Hi, I will go by Jay. I'm from southern Alberta, Canada. I work at a feedlot feeding cattle. And I was heading home from work with my brother in law who also worked at this feedlot. I'd say this happened about two months ago and we were heading home from work and we'd just gotten to the front entryway of the feedlot where we go to turn onto the road to head home. And we looked up in the sky and probably the best way I can describe this, like, I can't give proportions because it was so far off, but it was like just a black line in the sky. And we probably sat there for 10, 15 minutes watching it. At first we just wondered what it was. And as we continued watching it, maybe five minutes into watching this thing, it started to split in the middle and like it turned into two lines after a certain point. And then we watched it for long enough that where it had originally begin to split in the middle, it continued going up the line until it was completely gone. There was no trace of it being in the sky in the first place. Yeah, I have pictures and a video of it somewhere. Yeah, it was very odd occurrence. I not too sure what it was. I don't even have a guess, but figured I would pass this along to you because I know you do a great job about debunking things like this or putting a possible name to it. Keep up the great work. I really enjoy your show and yeah, take care.
Derek Hayes
Thank you, Jay. Now, I don't have the videos or photos that Jay referenced, so if you're listening, Jay, please be sure to send those in or back in if you sent them and I can't find them. Sometimes it can be a bit of a struggle to match stories with emails. There are just so many now. Unfortunately, I have no idea what this might have been. The best guess that I have is that it was some sort of smoke trail from an airplane. You know those Skyrider planes? I used to see them all the time when I lived in Los Angeles. But at the right angle, at the right speed, and in the right weather conditions, I could see the two lines of smoke growing apart as the particles dissipate, creating something similar to what Jay described. But something tells me that if it were that simple Jay likely would have noticed. So I don't know here either, folks, but if you have a guess, be sure to let us know. For now, though, thank you again, Jay, for dropping that mystery on us. Now, folks, we've reached the end of the program. Our final entry, if you will, and we're closing this one out with a bit of a barn burner. Chris, the microphone is yours.
Jack Wagner
Hey, Derek. My name is Chris. I'm a retired federal police officer from Canada, a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and I live in British Columbia. I actually had a memory. There was a time when I was loaned out to a First nations police force that was having some staffing difficulties, and I still wore my uniform and of course, was employed by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, but I was being loaned to a tribal police force. I had been working in that community for three years at that point, and I volunteered to be loaned or seconded to this tribal police force. And one night I was doing some paperwork, and it was late at night. It was sometime between 3 and 4 in the morning, and we were incredibly short staffed. There were times when I would work for 96 hours straight, essentially just like taking calls and going home and eating and sleeping and hopefully hanging out with my wife and children for whatever amount of time I could. But that was few and far between because it was such a busy place and a lot of call volume. So at any rate, I had gone to whatever call and I was trying to write it up, and I was so exhausted that I remember sort of nodding off while I was typing. So I would wake up and see the screen populated with whatever, like the letter P, like, you know, 150 times. So I'd have to backspace, backspace, backspace, erase, whatever. And I was just so tired but wanting to get this report done. And at one point I woke up because someone had run beside me. Now, to put this into context, I'm working by myself in a police detachment. The doors are all locked, obviously middle of the night. The public doesn't have access to come in because there's no one to greet them. I'm just in the office because I'm.
Unnamed Caller
Not out on a call.
Jack Wagner
So they, you know, either pick up the phone outside the office door or call it in on their own phones. No one has access to this place. I'm the only person in there. And as I wake up, I see this figure running by me. And what I remember is that some of the papers that were on the corner of my desk fluttered a little bit with the wind of Whoever ran by me. So my immediate action is I draw my firearm and get my flashlight out, and I'm gonna clear this place. Now, we have these romantic and TV notions of what police stations look like. This was kind of an open concept, very simple, essentially one room. The police officers had their desks in one area, and the administrative staff, of which there were two, were in another part of the office. But, like, it was just one big room, essentially. And then, of course, you've got little rooms going off of it, you know, interview rooms, that kind of stuff. So I can see basically, like, 90% of the office, and I don't see anybody. But I check the closets, I check the exhibit room that I have access to. I check under things, like in cupboards, like, you name it. I am clearing this place. Because anybody who has the wherewithal to break into a police station probably isn't of sound mind. So I want to find them, but I come up completely empty. And I'm pretty creeped out because I'm on a reserve, and I've witnessed and heard stories of some crazy that goes on. So, yeah, I am creeped out. So I clear the place. I'm like, all right, this is it. I'm out of here. And I lock up, set the alarm and go home. So I'm working again the next day, and I come in, and there's actually a guy that's been on day shift, so I'm working night shift. And the guy that's on day shift is a buddy of mine. He's first nations, and he's lived there all his life. You know, we're kind of having small talk, like, how was your day? Blah, blah, blah.
Derek Hayes
So.
Jack Wagner
And I go into it. I'm like, have you ever had anything weird happen in this office? Like maybe some unexplained figure running through? And my buddy tells me that in fact, he has. And I'm like, oh, my God. Shocked. But also, it's super gratifying. So he tells me that there was a man who lived in the community a number of years ago and was actually training to be a shaman. And never having engaged in shaman training myself, I can imagine that it is weird and wonderful and wild. And at any rate, apparently one night the shaman trainee is out in the forest and doesn't turn up. And when. When a search is done, they find him dead. And he'd actually been killed by a tree that fell over in the forest. This was probably, I'm going to say, 300 meters away from the office that I was working in. But my buddy told me that he would sometimes see this guy running around the reserve and sometimes in fact would run through buildings including the police station. I said to my buddy, well, has it ever happened to you? And he said, yeah. I was like, what happened? And he told me he was working night shift doing paperwork. Out of the corner of his eye saw movement and saw somebody running and again cleared the building and there's nothing. Now he said to me, did you check the exhibit locker? An exhibit is anything that's seized in the course of an investigation and it's put into a locker so that you have continuity over who is touching it. So once I see something put in a locker, the only time it's going to be touched again is by the exhibit locker custodian who was my buddy. And he would take it from the exterior exhibit lockup into the interior exhibit lockup. And so he's the only person that has continuity on all of the exhibits. It's all just for a court thing. But he said, did you go into the exhibit locker room? And I said, yeah. And he goes, did you go into the inside locker? And I'm like, well, I don't have a key. I said, no. I said, did you? He goes, yeah. I said, well, what did you see? He said, nothing. I'm like, okay. He goes, no, no, no. I mean nothing. And he said that when he opened the door to the inner exhibit locker room, there was just an infinite amount of space. He said it was like he was looking into like a void, you know, he hit the light, there was no light and the space went on for a turn. I said, what did you do? He said, I closed and locked the door. And I'm like, yeah, that's what you do. You close and lock the door and you get the hell out of there. So that was interesting to say the least. It was kind of freaky, I'm not gonna lie. But it certainly affected me. Me, cuz I would get alarm calls to that office and they would always be in the middle of the night and there would be literally nothing that would have set them off. Nothing fell. You know, sometimes when the air conditioning goes on, if you've got a piece of paper that falls or you know, sometimes there's like free hanging posters in some offices. Well, this is a police station. There's nothing like that. There was never anything that had fallen on the floor, like a piece of paper or anything. The alarm would just go off for no reason. Of course it wasn't equipped with video cameras. And this was back in 2001, 2002. So there weren't like, you know, all these fancy little cameras that we have now. It was like all cctv and it was, like, blurry as hell. Like, that was back in the day when someone would be like, so and so stole something, and the surveillance camera would just, like, you know, those black and white blobby things that we used to see on the news when they would have, like, a suspicious person kind of thing. So, yeah, no high def, awesome cameras or anything like that. Nothing in there at all. So, yeah, I would go to an alarm call, pull up outside of the office, turn down all the takedown lights on my car, go in, you know, like, really tactically, because I was freaked out by the apparent presence of a ghost in there. And I just wanted to say that this whole community, I mean, the community had been there for thousands and thousands of years. This was their traditional land, and there was a graveyard. And this is gonna sound weird, but I used to do my paperwork on the computer, and oftentimes I would do it by the cemetery for the community. And all the time, I would look up from what I was doing, and probably about, I don't know, 200 yards to the other side, the fence line of the graveyard, I would see movement. And so I would throw on my takedown lights, and there would be no one there, no one moving, nothing going on. Shut off my takedown lights, don't see anything, do some more paperwork, look up, and sure as heck, I would see movement along that fence line again. So there were, like, all kinds of ghostly happenings in that community. And one of the things that was told to me was that the river that runs through the area would often flood. And many of the grave markers in the cemetery were made out of wood, so they would float, and the flood would go down, and the grave markers would be all over the place. And people would. Would do their best to put the markers where they had once been, but this would happen, you know, quite frequently. And some people said that it was, you know, the spirits of the dead looking to find out where their grave markers were and stuff like that. I have no idea. All I know is I definitely saw a movement that would disappear when I would turn on the lights. So, yeah, that place was wild. Anyways, thank you so much.
Derek Hayes
Thanks, Chris. That's wild stuff. And I think you have a lot in common with Hammer, whom we heard from earlier in the program. Two different lawmen, two similar experiences. Now, if even half of what Chris is telling us is true. This area has a real paranormal presence and the reasoning behind that activity is an un anecdote that I can really get behind the floating wooden tombstones. That's a story I've never heard before, but what a fascinating detail. Now of course, I have no idea if that story is true, but I can tell you that I think a detail like that is the perfect route for a series of spooky experiences and I love to hear it. So thank you again Chris for taking the time to share your entry. And thank you folks for tuning in here tonight, because that's gonna do it for this episode. Monsters Among Us
Episode: S19 Ep29: Oh, Canada: Phantom Shaman, Ghosts on Horseback, and a Silver-Eyed Devil
Host: Derek Hayes | Audioboom Studios
Release Date: July 22, 2025
In this enthralling episode of Monsters Among Us, host Derek Hayes takes listeners on a spine-chilling journey through the vast and mysterious landscapes of Canada. Focusing on true paranormal encounters, Hayes delves into stories ranging from ghostly apparitions and phantom footsteps to unsettling UFO sightings and enigmatic supernatural beings. This episode, rich with firsthand accounts, offers a deep dive into the eerie phenomena that haunt the Great White North.
Dana from Manitoba shares a terrifying experience that plagued her and her boyfriend shortly after moving into their brand-new two-story house in Winkler. “I started Otherworld to take a grounded approach to the paranormal, help people tell their own stories, and encourage more to come forward,” Dana recounts (02:34).
Derek Hayes responds with a touch of humor, suggesting that adopting a cat might at least provide an innocent explanation for the mysterious noises (06:37). However, the unresolved nature of Dana’s experience leaves listeners pondering the true source of the haunting.
Hammer, a police officer from Central Canada, narrates a series of unnerving events following a suspicious death he was called to investigate (08:18).
Derek Hayes speculates about the possibility of a lingering attachment from the initial event but remains skeptical about the coincidences aligning so perfectly (17:08).
Travis from Nova Scotia recounts a 1992 UFO sighting that left a lasting impression on him (19:23).
Hayes acknowledges the rarity of such sightings outside the contiguous U.S., noting Nova Scotia’s significant number of black triangle UFO reports (22:03). He invites listeners with similar experiences to share their stories, emphasizing the region's enigmatic aerial phenomena.
Laura from Vancouver recounts a haunting experience in her rented room in New Westminster in 1999 (25:31).
Derek Hayes empathizes with Dana’s earlier story, suggesting a possible connection between the two haunting experiences and highlighting the haunting nature of Laura’s revelations (29:55).
In line with the episode's Canadian focus, Hayes presents statistics from an Ipsos poll conducted in 2021, revealing:
This segment underscores Canada's rich tapestry of paranormal beliefs and practices, setting the stage for the subsequent eerie narratives.
Will from Canada shares his father’s unsettling experience in Northern Ontario in the 1960s (33:18).
Derek Hayes contemplates the possibility of abductions but refrains from suggesting sleep paralysis as an explanation due to the corroborating military involvement (37:25).
Jay from Southern Alberta describes a two-line black formation in the sky that split and dissipated without trace, captured on video (49:30).
Derek Hayes speculates that it could be a smoke trail from an airplane but acknowledges that the peculiar behavior suggests something more mysterious (51:34).
Chris, a retired Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer from British Columbia, shares a harrowing tale of paranormal activity within a police station (53:11).
Derek Hayes draws parallels between Chris’s and Hammer’s experiences, highlighting common themes of ghostly apparitions and unexplained phenomena in Canadian law enforcement settings (63:40).
Derek Hayes wraps up the episode by appreciating the depth and diversity of Canadian paranormal stories shared by callers. From haunted homes and mysterious UFO sightings to ghostly apparitions in police stations, the episode underscores the rich tapestry of unexplained phenomena prevalent across Canada. Hayes encourages listeners to share their own experiences, fostering a community of paranormal enthusiasts eager to explore the unknown.
