SA Good evening and welcome. Welcome to Monsters Among Us. I'm your guide, Derek Hayes. Hello friends and strangers. It's a pleasure to be with you here this evening. Now, if you're new to the program, which it seems like there are a lot of you lately, you've stumbled upon what might be the world's largest collection of first hand paranormal accounts. Stories in the witness's own words. And here at MAU we do Tuesdays a bit differently. I pick a theme for the episode. All Bigfoot, all calls from Ohio, all hospital stories. Something along those lines. And recently I had the idea to feature different colors and the color red episode from a few weeks back seem to be a big hit. So I'm bringing that feature back tonight, the painted black episode, where each and every call somehow centers around the color black. Black shadow figures, black beasts. And picking up where we left off last week with the avian species black birds from parts unknown. Please welcome Amanda to the program.
Amanda
Hey there.
Caller
My name is Amanda.
This story takes place in Washington. I was probably about 10 or 11 years old and I was staying with my grandparents at the time. This black bird appeared and started running into the window. Kind of like the Windex commercials where they just would run into the window and it happened for about a week and my grandma would try to walk down the driveway and Shoo it off. They put newspaper on the window to try to like detract the bird. And every day for that week, it just would show up and fly right into the window.
And one day there was blood on.
The window and there's a crack in it and the bird never showed back up. And like I said, it just kept.
Coming back to the house no matter.
How much my grandma tried to distract it. And within like 12 hours, my grandpa was pronounced dead. And before that, my grandma had mentioned.
That there was like an old tale.
That, you know when a blackbird appears upon you that it can be a.
Bad omen or something bad's gonna happen to someone you love. And I don't know, it's been with me for all these years and thought.
Amanda
I'd share that little story and see.
Caller
If anyone's experienced anything similar.
Love the podcast.
One time listener, first time caller. Keep up the good work.
Amanda
Thanks.
Derek Hayes
Thank you, Amanda. Now, I've always heard that too, except that what I was told from my grandmother, I believe, is that if a bird of any color flies into your window, someone in the home will soon die. And I remember this happening at her house. A bird flying into the window and then her telling me about the folklore, the wives tale, or the superstition that Amanda just detailed. But thankfully for our family, nothing happened that night and everyone in the house went on to live at least another 25 years. So you're not the only one that's heard of this, Amanda, because I had as well. But you know, it is important to consider that this experience could have just been a big coincidence. After all, a billion birds are killed each year here in the US by running into Windows. And over 3 million Americans die each year. So those two facts are bound to occur together from time to time. But I agree here, Amanda, it is creepy as hell when it happens, especially in your case as the prophecy seem to be true for you. We appreciate you taking the time to share that unsettling story. Thank you again for calling in. Now folks, I do my best to squeeze in as many calls as I possibly can, so I'm going to do just that here with this next entry, the brief entry that comes to us from Donald in the state of South Carolina.
Caller
Hey, Derek. This is Donald from South Carolina listening to your Haunted Pets episode. This reminds me of a story, something that happened to my wife about three years ago in our house. One morning she was going out to go to work and she came running back in the house and told me that there was a black dog laying in a tree right next to our house and was just looking at her and had weird like glowing eyes. She didn't specify color to me. She was really freaked out so she had to go to work. So I escorted her out and there was no dog out there. Later on I pulled up my video from my security system and I looked and it was. I did not see a dog. I saw these weird sparkles. It was like right up against a tree and it was different colored sparkles.
And it was going on and off.
Like little miniature lights, kind of blurry. It was there for actually a couple of minutes and then it just faded away. Needless to say, that never happened again and we ended up having that tree removed. Anyway, Derek, we all love your show. Thank you so much and you have a great day. Bye.
Derek Hayes
Thank you, Donald. A black dog that possibly transformed itself into a cloud of sparkles. It's a first for me. But perhaps this is yet another omen or perhaps a strange coincidence or maybe there was a dog buried beneath that tree and whatever you and your wife saw there, Donald, was some sort of manifestation of all of that. Whatever it was, it made for an amazing entry. So we thank you again, Donald, for sharing with us. Now folks, it's time for a quick break, but I'll be right back with more pitch black stories right after this.

You guys know they're coming so we might as well get the first one out of the way Here with the first of a few black shadow stories is Jay out of the Tar Heel State of North Carolina.
Caller
Hi, this is Jake. I'm from North Carolina. So two years back in my house I woke up in the middle of the night out of nowhere. Don't know why, but something told me that I needed to get up and do something. I didn't probably check my phone after a certain point in the night. I don't care what time it is, I just want to get whatever I need to done and then go back to sleep. And I know it wasn't a dream. Not only how vivid it was, but because what happens after? So I get up, turn on my wife and open my door and look across the hallway towards my parents room and I see a very tall black mat that's well over our doorway. I earlier this year measured how tall the doorway was and the doorway is about 7ft tall I think it was. This thing was damn near touching our ceiling and I'm staring at it. Like I said, it's black, but it's like a solid shadow. It's not in the shape of a person. It looks more like wispy smoke flowing around, but every single wisp of smoke completely and utterly fallen. I wasn't making any sound. I was terrified, frozen in my place. And it turned around towards me and in an absolutely clear and earnestly lifted voice says oh hello there. It was so polite and oddly calming that it sent shivers down my spine. Kind of in the same way that someone who is overly calm in a stressful situation can be a bit off putting. After it says oh hello there, it just vanishes. It vanishes like a smoke from a campfire. Once you're down to the place, nothing left. And I left standing in my doorway staring in the same spot wondering what just happened. And after that I decide I need to close my door because I have filled with a sense of dread for some reason because when I turned around I saw two eyes. But they weren't like regular eyes. They were as if someone scribbled in a dark section, darker than the rest of his body onto what I could only see was his face and it was darker than everything else around. I closed my door, sat on my bed right on and stared at my door, thinking this thing's gonna come through the door. I wake up in the morning somehow, because I don't even remember falling asleep. I'm still in the same position, facing the door, light's still on. And I realized that wasn't a dream. I saw that my light's still on. I'm facing the door, sitting up, sitting on my bed. Thank you for playing this if you do. Bye. Have a great night.
Derek Hayes
A shadow entity that literally says hello. That's not something that you hear about every day. At least I don't. But thank you, Jay, for calling in. And I'm glad to hear that whatever it was, it didn't make its way through the door and that you were able to make this phone call later on. Certainly creepy stuff, my man. And we thank you again for taking the time. And folks, if you have a story that you think is just as creepy as Jay's, give my hotline a call at 888-608-night. That's 888608, Nig HT. Or record a voicemail memo and email it to me at monsters among us podcastmail.com and it's time to start getting those hometown legends in, folks. Now I'll talk more about that on Thursday's episode, but you longtime listeners can get a jump on the action. And I'd love to hear more monster stories this year. So if you're sitting on a monster legend, you know what to do. And folks, don't forget about Monsters Among Us junior. The second season started just last week and that show is a bi weekly release, so you won't get another episode until next Wednesday. So be sure to tune in with your youngsters and get caught up before next Wednesday. Now that's enough house cleaning for now. Let's get back to the action with this next call. That takes us to Massachusetts, where Deb had an experience with a mysterious black object in the sky and she just can't explain. Welcome to the program, Deb.
Amanda
Hi there, Derek and Munsters among us family. My name is Deb. I grew up in Ohio and now I live in Massachusetts, but have a lot of weird stories from both places. This story is a story from up here in New England. This happened about two weeks ago. I was driving from Connecticut back to Massachusetts on Interstate 95. It had been rainy in the morning, day that it cleared up so the sky was blue. The sun was out and there was a lot of puffy clouds in the sky. And this is about 3:30 or so in the afternoon. So traffic on the highway was busy but not crazy. And I was doing about 60 miles.
Caller
An hour when this happened.
Amanda
Some things you have to know about me is that I'm an avid birder. So I really familiar with all the birds in New England, what they look like in the sky. This is relevant to the story, so is the weather. So I had seen a lot of birds that day on my travels. And as I looked up in the sky I saw a object that was black. And I thought, oh briefly in my mind, oh, this must be another bird. And seen a lot of vultures that day. And like is that a vulture? No, not a vulture. And because this is around college graduation time and stuff, as I'm seeing the object more as I'm driving, looking up in the sky, it looked a little bit like a black balloon. And I thought to myself, is that a balloon? And I'm really driving and looking up at it, driving and looking, looking up at it. And it's definitely not a balloon. It's too high in the sky, it's too big. And my next thought was this black object, as I'm looking at it, getting a better look at it now, it almost looked cube shaped. And I thought perhaps it is a helicopter, you know, kind of far off down here there's enough military installations that I've seen Blackhawk helicopters and throughout my life like I used to work up by Hanscom Air Force baseball, familiar with some types of military aircraft and stuff like that. As I'm thinking this, this object is now high enough in the sky that it is going through a cloud. Sounds like there's that helicopter that's way too high in the sky to be in a helicopter, Goes to the cloud, comes out the other side. And it's also now as I'm observing it more like I'm realizing it's going in a really linear straight line, very straight line. It's going fairly quick, almost at a pace of big airplane. So I'm still watching it a little bit as it can. You know, the roads up here, you know, it's a little bit hilly, so I'm going up and down the road, there's trees, there's buildings and trying to keep sight of it as much as I can. And I'm observing it for about three, four minutes. It wasn't that long, but long enough to see all these things it was doing and how it was behaving in the sky and going this really super straight line going in and out of clouds. At this point I'm realizing that this object, whatever it is, is huge and it's cube shaped. So I observe it for a little bit longer and keeps going on. It's very linear, very straight line. And then I, unfortunately I lost sight of it between the trees and the buildings and the clouds. And then I think I had driven beyond the path that it was taking. But it was really bizarre and I've had a lot of bizarre experiences. But this, I would say my first actual UFO sighting and I really have no idea what it was. I've lived under the flight path of Cleveland Hopkins Airport and up in Ohio. That's where I grew up. And even here, where I live in Massachusetts, where we're situated, we get airplanes coming and going from TF Green as well as from Logan in Boston. So it did not jive with anything in my mind that I have seen as an aircraft in the sky, any military aircraft I've ever seen, any helicopter I've ever seen. And it was really truly one of the strangest things that I have seen. So that was my basically UFO sighting. Thanks a lot, Derek, for everything that you do and I hope you all enjoy this story that I've presented.
Derek Hayes
Thank you, Deb. Well, I don't know what it was either, but I sure did enjoy hearing about it. And when it comes to black UFOs or UAPs, the shape that's most commonly reported is the obvious delta wedge or flying black triangle. A sighting of a black cube shaped craft, while not unheard of, certainly isn't a popular description. But as you're about to hear later on in the episode, Jet Black UFOs come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. But first, another quick word from tonight's sponsors. It's our favorite time of year. Now, before I push play on this next paranormal tale, a little bit about the color black. Now, since the Middle Ages, black has been the symbolic color of seriousness, somberness, and of authority. In the Roman Empire, it became the color of mourning. And over the centuries, it was frequently associated with death, evil, witches, magic, violence, fear and elegance. And in Japan, black is associated with mystery, the night, the unknown, the supernatural, the invisible and the deadly. Combined with white, it can symbolize intuition. And of course, the color black is synonymous with the paranormal, the black shock, black triangles, alien black cats, and of course, the infamous black eyed kids. For a deeper dive on that particular subject, please welcome Nick out of Canada.
Caller
Hi, my name is Nick. I used to live in a town called Coburg in Ontario, Canada. And this story I'm about to tell you happened around May of 2020, a few months after the pandemic started. And I was getting a little cooped up. So I was still living with my mother at the time and my little siblings. And my mom had told me to take my dog to like a field that was about 10 minutes away from my house. So I did. I started walking with my dog, right? It was about 3 o' clock in the afternoon and I was walking past the community center and there was no other buildings around the community center. It was just wide open field behind it. So I walked behind it because I knew there wouldn't be any people because COVID pandemic, it basically was a ghost town. I was about to let my dog off a leash and I saw in the corner of my eye someone standing there. My dog's not too friendly with dogs, but she's usually friendly with people. But I didn't want to risk it. So I kept her on the leash and kept walking. And I was about 10ft away from the girl when I looked at her. And she was about my age, I was 17 at the time. So she was probably around 17, like oldest, 20 max. And she had long black hair, but it was really greasy and looked unwashed, but it was well brushed. And she had a very pale complexion, like vampire level pale. And I wanted to figure out every detail of her face because that's what I do with every person I see to strengthen my memory. And I didn't get very far because I started at the jaw and noticed her lower face was smeared in blood. Me very concerned, living in a small town. I immediately took a step towards her and I noticed the front of her gray sweatpants and sweater were covered in blood. And she was barefoot and her feet were dirty and like covered in blood themselves. So I immediately asked if she was okay. And as I said that, she lifted her head and looked me down the eye. And her eyes were black. And I got chills all over my body. I was frozen. So I repeated the question again, are you okay? And she opened her mouth as an attempt to speak, but nothing came out except for like a gurgling noise, kind of like someone choking thick liquid. That's the only way I could really explain it. And after a few attempts of that trying to speak, she nodded. And now my dog is like whining, trying to pull me in the opposite direction of the girl. So now fearing for my life, I don't know why I feared for my life. I was just really, really scared. So I turned away from her and took two steps away from her and I turned around and she was gone, like completely. So me really spooked. Now I turn around and start running back to my house. And I get there and my mother was very angry and I couldn't figure out why. So I tried to tell her the story and she interrupted me and says, where have you been? Me confused because I was supposed to be gone for an hour, but the trip could have only taken 13 minutes. And turns out I was gone for three hours. So, yeah, I don't know what you make of that or if you've ever heard of anything like that, but yeah. Thank you. Bye.
Derek Hayes
Thank you, Nick. What do you say here, folks? A ghost? A vampire? The bek? Or was this some sort of elaborate prank? One I might have tried to pull myself when I was a kid, Save for the black eyes, of course, because that was a difficult effect to pull off back in the mid to late 80s. But you can get contact lenses these days that will easily get the job done. And inexpensively, I might add, a cheap pair of black eye contacts will only run you about 40 bucks. But of course, it's also possible that Nick saw something mundane and simply let his imagination get the better of him. But regardless of the explanation, we do thank you, Nick, for taking the time to tell the tale. Okay, we shared a black dog story, so it's only fair that we allow the opposition equal time. So here with a big black cat story is Shelby in the bluegrass state of Kentucky.
Shelby
Hey, Derek. My name is Shelby, and I am calling in response to the episode that you did involving Delaney on Patreon and her story about the ABC in her area. I also live in the similar area that she was referencing. I probably live about four or five miles from where the incident took place. And the house that I live in has been in my family for 20 to 30 years, probably more than that now. But I heard a story from my grandma, and I've heard this story a lot growing up, because she always told me to watch out for it because I live out in that house now. And it was about a very large black cat in that area. I never gave any credence to it because I thought that it was a mountain lion or just I didn't know what it was. I didn't really think twice about it. But then I started to look into alien black cats in this area. And then I decided that I should call in because I thought that the story was interesting. In congruence with the Laneys, my grandma, this happened to her. She told me the story. She's not the type to lie. But our kitchen window looks out onto the highway that we live off of, and adjacent to the house is a barn. So from the kitchen window, you can see the road and then the barn. I assume that she was either washing dishes or just looking out the window because it's really beautiful out there. And she said that in plain daylight, as she was looking out the window, she sees what she describes as a cat the size of a fully grown male goat. Cross the road with a very long tail, which I thought was classic. Cross the road, go down towards the barn, and she never saw it again. I was not aware that there were no black cats in this area. So I thought that it was interesting that even though the story probably happened 20, 30 years ago, that it's still happening now and people are still seeing a black cat. The Syria. So that's my story. Really appreciate what you guys do. Hope that you have a great day. Thank you.
Derek Hayes
Thank you, Shelby. And I'll tell you what, I'm no expert, but I am an experiencer and I am a collector of reports, reports just like this one. And it is my belief that there are about seven states in which this phenomena seems to occur the most Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, West Virginia, and parts of southern Illinois. And I cannot tell you why those seem to be the most popular locations, but they are. And Shelby's story here, of course, took place in one of them. And wouldn't you believe it? So did my story. So thank you again, Shelby, for taking the time to share this entry. Now that we've narrowed down where these encounters take place, perhaps we can form a better idea of what's going on here. Now, when I was a kid, teachers would always ask me what my favorite color was and I'd always say black. And I'd always get the same dirty looks and condescending reaction. But black isn't a color. They would always say, well, that's just like their opinion man. But technically they were right. In terms of science, black isn't a color at all. It's what you get when there's a complete lack of or absorption of visible light. Now, all these years later and it's still my favorite color. And given the option on a color, nine times out of ten, I'm betting on black. My vehicle is black, my office is black, my cats are black. And this next entry features just a touch of black in a place you'd most likely not want to see it. Correspondent 44, can you hear us? Correspondent 44?
Correspondent 44
I go by Correspondent 44. This is my story. This happened in my late teens. I moved to rural town in Indiana. My cousin owned some land and he allowed me to live in one of his trailers that he had had way out in the middle of nowhere. It was pretty far away from town. It was cheap rent and it's what I needed at the time. So again, it was a good 25, 30 minutes from town with windy roads, one lane roads out in the middle of nowhere. Houses were around but they were farmhouses, a lot of corn fields and bean fields and whatnot. But I wasn't used to it where I was from the city before. Now here I am in the countryside. So anyway moved to this trailer in the middle of the woods. The drive out there was exceptionally scary as I remember correctly. I was always watching the wood line while I drove home. I worked at Taco Bell and those of your listeners that ever worked at Taco Bell, it was open till about 3am so you could clean up and be done about 3am and drive home. At least that was my shift. So it Was early in the morning hours that I drove home every night from my shift. And I would go down this long road once I got out of town into where I would begin to drive to my house. So this one particular night I'm driving, there's this bend in the road, a turn. It's almost like an S. If you don't know the road and haven't been down it quite a few times, it would come up on you pretty fast. So you know how to slow down at that moment. Otherwise you'd go straight into the woods. At this band in the road there was this old decrepit house and it was quite a bit in the woods. You could see it from the road, but it was covered by vines and debris. But it was definitely not lived in. You can tell that it was an old farmhouse that someone had let just go for whatever reason. It was pretty scary. We would drive by it and I'd look at it and think, wow, it'd be cool to fix that up. But other than that, that's a pretty scary house. So this one particular night I'm driving into that area, slow it down for that turn that you have to make. And your headlights are directly on the woods at this point to make this turn. And in the woods right in the middle is this old dur looking, I guess, man, it was only a few seconds I saw him sitting in the woods, Indian style, halfway in the tree line, halfway out of the tree line, close to the road. And he was just sitting there. I remember thinking, oh, that's odd. You die in the middle of nowhere at probably 3:30 in the morning. You know, I'm pretty analytical. Kind of thought about it like that's creepy. This guy is most likely homeless. So anyway, I don't think too much about it. Fast forward a couple of months, I guess later, it's getting a little colder outside. Same deal. I'm coming home from my shift and for whatever reason, again, I'm in my 20s, I wasn't that responsible. I ran out of gas. So at this point I had to walk back to the trailer. And it was closer from where I was at than it was to walk back to town. So I figured I would walk back to the trailer. This was before I had a cell phone. I don't know if there were cell phones, but I didn't have one and thought, well, I'll go back. Sleeping off, wake up in the morning, call somebody to get me some gas in the morning. Fun walking down the road, not particularly happy, knowing this is a Scary road. There's a lot of loose dogs in these farms have dogs that aren't on leashes because they're in the middle of nowhere and their dogs are pretty much know that that's where they live. But I was more afraid of that than I was afraid of anything else. Anyway, I'm walking to that particular area I mentioned earlier where I'm at that bend and all of a sudden I remember I had saw that person sitting Indian style in this particular area. And now I have to pass it and I am full of fear. I just freaked myself out. So I'm walking, you know, I'm looking ahead of me and in the corner of my eye out of the wood line, I see this guy and he's standing there and I remember specifically he's wearing overalls, no shirt. And I'm looking out of the corner of my eye as I meet eyes with him and he's mouthing something to me, but there's no sound coming out, nothing coming out at all. He's just motioning to me and mouthing something, but he's motioning with his fingers like, come here, come over here, come to this area. And I don't know how else to explain it except my top half of my body was frozen. My legs kept walking straight where I had to go closer to him to get to where I was going. But at the same time I was passing him and I had to stay on that path to get to where I was going. But I was terrified. Some of the main details that I remember about this guy, all I can describe it as is if you have a bucket of oil and you dip your fingertips into it and pull it out, you have black tipped fingers. That's how his fingers were motioning to me to come over to the edge of the woods where he was at. And it was so frightening that I really couldn't think of anything else except to keep going and to try to not entertain him at all. I don't know what he was mouthing. His face was very void. I mean, I remember no teeth, black hole where his mouth was as he was mouthing something. Again, no noise. And it was creepy, terrifying. Open wide eyes like he was afraid, but at the same time knew what he was doing. So I keep walking pass by. I'm overwhelmed with fear. I have a feeling of dread. I still got probably a good two miles before I get to my trailer. And as I'm walking I'm just hearing stuff. I know I'm freaking myself out at this point and I don't see anything else. I get back to the house and go in, lock the door, somehow fall asleep, wake up. You know when it's daytime, you feel better. I'm sure I thought about it after that for quite some time, but as the years pass, I never seen anything else like that particular thing. But anyway, I don't know. That's my story. Thanks for your podcast. Keep on rocking. I'm out.
Derek Hayes
Thank you for the phone call. Black tipped fingers. Maybe the guy was a painter, or maybe he was death incarnate. Whatever it was, it was spooky as hell. Now do you remember a while back when I promised more black shadow entities? Well, I'm back to deliver. Well, technically David from Massachusetts is here to deliver, but either way, please join me in welcoming him back to the program.
David
Hello Derek, Sarah and friends. My name is David and I'm a chauffeur from Boston. What I'm about to share with you took place late one night back in September of 2022. It was around 2 in the morning on a Tuesday night and I just returned the limo to base at that hour, no one is in the office, but it's not unusual to bump into another chauffeur doing the same thing. So there the two of us were standing in the parking lot shooting the you know what when all of a sudden something caught my eye across the street at the gas station. Again, this was around 2am on a weeknight in a city roughly 10 miles west of downtown Boston. At that hour everything was closed and there were no cars going by and absolutely nobody out walking around. I couldn't believe what I just saw. I immediately turned back to my co.
Caller
Worker and asked him, did you just see something?
David
He replied, yes I did. What did you see? I asked. He proceeded to describe exactly what I had also just seen. Moving very quickly past the gas pumps was a black shadow figure. It was about 5 foot 6. It didn't have a face or hands and feet so much, but it was definitely in the shape of a person. This thing didn't make any sound and disappeared in a matter of about 5 seconds as it darted past us just across the street. The way it vanished, it was like it knew we saw it. If we were looking in the opposite direction, we would have never known it was there. The two of us stood there in disbelief for a few minutes. We both agreed it wasn't a person or reflection of a light or something.
Caller
Blowing down the street.
David
Again, this thing was there one second and then it was gone. A few days later, talking with our mechanic, he told me the the gas station had a car stolen a few.
Caller
Months before and the police came by.
David
To watch our surveillance video. The stolen car in question was not in view, but on the video the same black shadow figure was captured going past.
Caller
Again.
David
It's also important to mention the direction this thing was moving towards is a cemetery just about a block down the street. Since all this happened last year, there has been many other strange, unexplained sightings and sounds witnessed by my numerous co workers. Needless to say, when I drop off the limo now after midnight, I don't hang around so much anymore. Thanks Derek and Sarah. Monsters Among US Rocks.
Derek Hayes
Always great to hear from you David. Thank you for the phone call. Now why would a shadow entity be loitering around a gas pump? Maybe he was trying to help correspondent 44 out. After all, he had his experience because he ran out of gas. It's all starting to make sense. No, I kid, but amazing stuff per usual. David. We thank you again for thinking of us. Now folks, coincidentally there are a lot of shorter calls in this episode and that means I get to share more calls with you. So buckle up for this mini marathon beginning with Stephanie in Florida.
Amanda
Hello, Derek and monsters among us. This is your friend Stephanie from the Tampa area. And today I've had sort of a minor coincidence, but it reminded me of a sighting I had in the sky in Virginia. So I happened to be looking around the Internet this morning and there was a story from Virginia of a black ring spotted floating in the sky over Williamsburg, Virginia in August of 2024. And when I was looking at that, it reminded me of when I saw the same kind of black ring in the sky over King's Dominion in Virginia in 2007. It looked exactly as the one reported and it clung together and floated away. At first I kind of thought maybe it was from a transformer blowing, but I've seen transformers blow and they've never puffed up a big smoke ring like that. And honestly, this did not really look like smoke to me. It looked more like insects. It could possibly have been birds, but the birds really would have had to be very cohesive and further away, much, much further away. Anyway, eventually it sort of drifted off and the sky was partly cloudy that day. So it sort of went behind a cloud and I lost it. I was also corralling a six and seven year old boy at a theme park, so they were pretty rowdy. Anyway, I just thought that was very coincidental that that showed up this morning. And then this afternoon I happened to be flipping around the TV and watch season one, episode two of Paranormal caught on camera featuring yourself. And also a big story about these big black rings in the sky, including one over Disneyland at that time. So been a witness to this. It's a very strange thing and not quite sure what exactly it was. Thanks very much. Keep the show spooky.
Caller
Love ya.
Derek Hayes
Thank you, Stephanie. I appreciate the phone call. Now, as Stephanie alluded to, I sort of have an experience with this sort of report. Back when I was doing the television program Paranormal Caught on Camera, we featured a video of a black ring floating over some houses or businesses or something. It wasn't perfectly symmetrical. It looked like an out of whack donut. It was wispy like fog or smoke and it seemed to just hover there above the trees. And just like Stephanie said, I immediately identified it as smoke from an exploding electrical transformer. For some reason, a black smoke ring is often produced when one of these things blows. And you know, nine times out of 10, I'd make that same diagnosis. But Stephanie here sounds pretty adamant that it Wasn't transformer smoke. So I guess we have to take her word for it. But whatever it was, it sounds super interesting and we thank you again, Stephanie, for taking time to tell us about it. Now folks, I have one more black UFO story to share. Sort of. Although this report does detail an unidentified flying object, I think it would be better described as a cryptid story. Either way, please welcome Joe to tonight's program.
Caller
Hey, Derek. This is Joe from Northern Michigan. This one comes out of Reedsburg, Michigan Valley. You know, I give credit for my love of the outdoors, for my love of fishing, for my love of hunting. Everything outdoors I gained from him. And one year when I was probably 12 or 13 years old, and I'm in my 50s now, so this was quite a while ago, he took my cousins and me and my brothers fishing over at Reedsburg Dam, which was one of his favorite places. It was, you know, partly sunny day type thing, wind wasn't too bad, so the fishing was all right. We were, you know, messing around in the river and all that kind of stuff. And I had happened to look up in the sky and I swear, you know, it might be just my 12 year old mind playing tricks on me. But even to this day, as I close my eyes and try to revisit this happening, I seen what I can only explain as a Thunderbird jet black. This bird, I swear to God, when it blew over the river, it wingtip, the wingtip was as wide as the river, which I know is probably impossible because the river is probably 40ft wide now, if not bigger. It wasn't that big back then, but even to this day it's still a decent sized river. You know, my childhood mind tells me it's just a monster of a bird, but my adult mind says, you dummy, you're just looking at a turkey vulture or something. We don't really have condors or anything like that in that area, so turkey vulture is going to be my only choice. But just my brain still tells me that thing was gigantic, well over the size of turkey vulture. One more side note is I'm the only one who saw it. There was probably seven or eight of us in the group and nobody else saw this bird. And I was just flabbergasted at what I had seen. And I don't know if they didn't believe me, but they just passed it off as, yeah, you just saw a big bird, so what? And went about fishing. So that's my story. Hope you can use it or find anybody else who had a big encounter like that in that area or were the only ones to see something like that in a group and nobody else thought. I just wondering if that's part of the thing. I appreciate everything you do. Keep up the good work. Thanks, Derek.
Bye.
Derek Hayes
Thank you, Joe. You know, I've been fooled by more than one turkey vulture. I would see a large black bird that I swear was 30 or 40ft across only for it finally to swoop down and I can see that tell tale featherless redhead. And I'm so glad that you mentioned, Joe, that you think it wasn't a turkey vulture or a buzzard. If you too are from Appalachia, eliminating what you think it wasn't certainly helps it make it easier to decide what it was. But you know, there is a legend that's persistent throughout the country that could help explain what was cited that evening. They call it the Thunderbird. And it's a legend that's been circulating for centuries now. I love a good cryptid story. So thank you, Joe, for taking the time. A giant black bird is exactly what we needed here tonight. Now, we had a black shadow entity in a doorway. We had one at a gas station. And now we get one in the bathroom. Please welcome anonymous from parts unknown.
Caller
Hey, Derek.
This time I'm going to remain anonymous. I'm from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I work at one of the hospitals around here as a nurse's aide. I was going to a patient's room and the way the rooms are set up is the patient bed is further in the room than the restroom. And what I mean by that is when you walk in the bathroom is right through the entry door. For this room it would have been to the left. And then the patient bed is further in the door. The patient needed some assistance from another nurse's aide and I and we were walking down the hallway to the room and as we got closer to the.
Room, we saw walking into the bathroom.
It was like a quick little blurb. I would say it was a black shadow now, but when I was walking into the room, it was like a little blur that just went into the restroom. Like if you saw something out of the corner of your eye. The aide and I both saw it and we went in and I thought someone was in the restroom and no one was in there. Yeah, it was just a crazy experience. The aide originally told me she saw it a couple times and then denied it a couple times after that. I think just the shock of the moment. I haven't had really that many experiences since I've been working at the hospital. If I don't have another experience, that one's an awesome one to have. Thanks for letting me call in. As always, I love the show. See you there.
Derek Hayes
Thank you. Caller in the bathroom. Is nothing sacred anymore? Now, I guess this one just goes to show you that you can never let your guard down, no matter where you are. We'll be right back.

Hey Derek, My name is Frank and I'm calling from the Mohawk Reserve of Kahnawake, just on the south shore of Montreal. So this happened when I was about five years old. I remember my dad had a few of his friends and cousins over.
Caller
It was auntie night.
Frank
I'm not sure what time, but it was already dark out. So they were sitting around the table playing cards. And I remember we had a dog, a golden retriever in the backyard in the doghouse. And the dog started barking, which he didn't usually do. So my dad sent one of his friends over there to go see what was going on. So his friend went out and he came back in. And I remember him telling my dad saying that there's somebody out there in the yard. So my dad went out there to go see what was going on. And he was out there for a few minutes. And when he came back in, he looked terrified. He said that right near the dog, in the doghouse, there was a woman. And he said he had asked a woman, hey, what are you doing in the yard? This is our house, you know, private property. You can't be here. And he didn't realize at first, but the woman was all dressed in black. Her face was covered, like, with the hood, it was all black. And he noticed that he couldn't see her feet. He said it looked like she was floating. Yeah, like she had a cape on everything. So when he asked her, what are you doing? She replied, I'm looking for my children. And where we were living at the time, it was a brand new house. My mom's grandmother had just built her the house. So I don't even think we were living there for about a year, maybe six months at the time. And yeah, she told him she was looking for her children. And he said, well, I. I can't help you. You know, this is a new house and you need to get off of our property. And she kept begging with him that she needed her children, she was looking for her children. Like I said, my dad was terrified. And I remember that everyone was freaked out, everyone was on edge. And one of my dad's cousins had even took me out of the house. I remember going for a ride just to get me out of the house, I guess. And not long after that, my parents had went to go see a woman who she claimed she was a psychic. Not sure how true that was, but she told them that I guess years ago our reserve was founded by the Roman Catholic Church. So there was a lot of nuns there on the property. And she told them that there was actually a school there at one time where the nuns used to teach. So I don't know if that's what she meant by her saying she was looking for her children, maybe even the students of the school. Oh yeah. She had also told them that the school was destroyed by an ambush. The Mohawks, my ancestors there at the time. And because nobody had lived on that land for years, like I said, the house was new, so maybe we had disturbed the property where that school was. It kind of makes sense, given the description of the woman that my dad had Seen, you know, like an unknown attire, you know, given like everything she was dressed in. But yeah, he gave a very vivid description of her being all in black. Black coat, black cape and a hood. He didn't see her face. It was all black. Oh, and another thing is, he said it was like blacker than black. So I'm not sure if this was the spirit of a nun who used to teach at that school. And like I said, our house was new and there was always something weird about the basement of the house. I remember as a child, I was terrified to go in the basement. And still to this day, while my grandmother lives there now, and even now as an adult, because this happened like maybe 20, 25 years ago. And still when I go into the basement, it has a very dark vibe to it. And I really don't like going down there. And everyone who does go down there, they say the same thing. Yeah, it's really weird. But ever since that incident, I don't think anything else had happened except just getting a weird vibe in the basement. So, yeah, that's my story. Love the show, Derek. Keep up the great work. Thanks.
Caller
Bye.
Derek Hayes
Thank you, Frank. A ghostly woman in black beckoning for her children to return. Any psychics validation that seems to lend credence to this entire experience. But she didn't have any feet and she was faceless and floating, so she certainly wasn't flesh and blood, whoever she was. Now, explanation aside, we really appreciate you taking the time to share, Frank, because that's my kind of story. And folks, that's gonna do it for this episode. Theme:
This episode’s unifying thread is the color black in the paranormal—a collection of first-hand stories featuring black birds, beasts (dogs, cats, and shadow figures), mysterious objects, and spectral beings. Derek curates listener accounts that tap into the culturally loaded symbolism of black: omens, otherness, evil, mystery, and sometimes, protection.

Derek maintains a mixture of skepticism, folklore appreciation, and open-minded curiosity throughout. He frequently contextualizes the stories with personal anecdotes or broader paranormal knowledge, inviting listeners to both find patterns and delight in the mystery.
