Good evening and welcome to Monsters Among Us. I am your guide, Derek Hayes. Step on in, folks. Grab a chair, pull up a seat. We've got stories to tell. And tonight we check another location off our list of state specific episodes. And this week we're headed up north, the birthplace of great inventions like the post it Note, spam, Rollerblades and water skiing. Host to the largest mall in the western hemisphere and home to more gray wolves than any other state in the contiguous United States. Tonight, all the calls I field will be about Minnesota, the land of 10,000 lakes, the Gopher State. And here to kick things off this evening is anonymous out of, of course, Minnesota.
Anonymous Caller
I would like to stay anonymous. I will say that I live in Minnesota. This occurred in Minnesota. I had a strange experience one night where I woke up in the middle of the night. Not entirely unusual. You know, it's probably the early hours, two, three, somewhere in there. But I woke up at the foot of my bed. I looked, and in my bed was me and my spouse. And we live in an urban area. The room was bathed in a little bit of the ambient light that had come in in the window. Just as I was able to identify myself laying there in bed, I heard a voice, but not like with my ears in my head, heard a voice telling me that I should just get back to bed, back to sleep, close my eyes. It was obviously startling, but I was even more startled when I heard again in my head kind of the dialogue between this sort of first voice and the second voice. And there was some communication back and forth about the process being ruined. And the second voice had a real attitude. It was really surly. It was like when I used to bartend and the kitchen staff at the place I worked at would fight about going home early. That sort of like snippy, hurried kind of stress. This second voice was saying to the first one, like, is this ruined? Is the process have to be scrapped? And the first voice very calmly told me to lie down and go back to sleep. It was like an out of body experience. Like I rejoined my body in bed and was told again to go to sleep, that the process could resume and I wouldn't be hurt and I wouldn't feel anything. And I woke up the next day and I had a really hard time focusing on anything.
Show Assistant / Co-host
It was all I could think about.
Anonymous Caller
And the sort of seclusion that I think I've come to is my sensory experience of like what I was seeing and standing at the foot of my bed. I wonder if that wasn't somehow artificial or being recreated. It kept me from sleeping for a really long time and nothing like that has happened since. I'm kind of vigilant about what is kind of going on day to day and my reality. Not sure if I'm starting to crack up or something. But anyway, thank you.

Derek Hayes (Host)
Thank you, caller. How do you explain that one? Parts of it sound like it could be sleep paralysis, but other parts also sound a lot like an alien abduction experience. And those are just two of the possibilities. Eerie Stavcaller and let's hope it continues to be a one time occurrence once. Sounds like it might be enough. Now folks, we have a few more minutes before we have to take tonight's first AD break, so let's slide one more into the rotation. Please welcome Brianna to the program.
Show Assistant / Co-host
Hi, Derek, My name is Brianna and I'm from Minnesota. So when I was younger I lived in a house and every time I would run through our living room to get to my parents, I would just freeze. I couldn't move. And eventually when I could, like there was a point where like my body or whatever let me continue on to where I was going. And this happened like multiple times. Growing up, I lived in that house till I was about 10. And I would always tell myself, oh, it's just the aliens. I don't know why, okay? But I don't know what it was, but it's something I vividly remember. And I don't know if that house was haunted because my dad did have an experience where he was sitting at the computer and I was down for a nap and he heard child footsteps running towards the back room where I was and he thought it was me. So he got up to be like, why are you awake? And I was sound asleep. Now I know that a older lady had died before we moved in, but I'm not sure she died in the house or on the way to the hospital. My brother always said in the house. My mom always said on the way to the hospital, but I'm not too sure. But I love your podcast. Keep up the good work. Thank you.
Derek Hayes (Host)
Thank you, Brianna. Now I know there's at least one way to check when and where the old lady died near or in your home. Visit dietinhouse.com, pay their little fee and get a complete report on your property. That is if you want to know, I do have a link to that website in tonight's show notes. It's a tool that I've never used myself, but I recommend it all the time. Thank you again, Brianna for sharing your call. Now folks, I have tons more to share with you from the North Star State right after this. The small steps you can take today. Ferguson

Of having wants and desires for the future. Now next up on our list of Minnesota based calls is Chuck. Please welcome him to the show.
Chuck / Gonzalo / Other Callers
Hey Derek, my name's Chuck, I'm from Woodbury, Minnesota and I got a story that happened this afternoon about one in the afternoon. It was a clear blue sky out and we were just leaving the house was me, my daughter and my wife. My wife was driving and my daughter was on the same side as me and I noticed a guy looking up into the sky and me myself, I'm always looking up into the sky. So I'm always observing of what's above me. And I noticed him looking up in the sky and I thought it was unusual. What could he be looking at standing there? And we were driving and I was able to look up and luckily I was able to see the object. It looked like A float plane. It was in the mid of the air. It stalled. It just was sitting there, like, not moving for, I don't know, at least five to 10 seconds. And the guy was standing there looking at it. And I told my daughter to look up. She looked up and saw the same thing. I asked her, what did you see? She said, the plane wasn't moving. It stayed there. I got goosebumps going right now just talking about it. That's a glitch in the matrix, Derek. It was really weird. So I appreciate you taking my call.
Derek Hayes (Host)
Thank you, Chuck. Now, believe it or not, this one is explainable. Chuck was witness to a rare phenomenon called the Parallax effect. Now, this happens when an observer in a moving vehicle, like a car or another plane, watches a plane moving at a similar speed or speed difference against a distant background, making it appear as if it's stationary. Now, this is difficult to explain verbally, but if you click the link that's in tonight's show notes, you'll get a better understanding of how it works. Now, I was lucky enough to be witness to this strange phenomenon outside the Ontario airport here in SoCal. It'll blow your mind because it really does seem like the plane is hovering, but sadly, it's only a trick of the eye. But we appreciate the call, Chuck, and the reminder that the parallax effect is real and nothing to be afraid of. Now, gangster. If you have a story you would like to share, call our hotline at 888-608-SNIGHT. That's 888-608-NIGHT. Or record a voice memo and email it to us at monsters among us podcastmail.com I'm still looking for camping stories if you have them, and I'm always looking for monster stories if you happen to have one of those. So give us a call, 888-6089. Now, if you lay eyes on a hovering object at night that's covered in a wild display of lights, well, that just might not be the parallax effect. Just ask our friend Marcus.
Marcus / Dale / Other Callers
Hey, Derek, this is Marcus from Minnesota. I'm calling to report a UFO sighting. I had it happened back in 2001 ish, around there between 2000 2002. Me and a group of friends, we're about 15 years old or so. We're walking down this stretch of road that was between a trailer park and a housing development. And this was a stretch. We walked all the time, day and night. That's what we did. We just walked around town. Small town, about 2,000 people, but there was, I'd say, probably around five of us. And we're walking down this road. It was nighttime. I cannot remember what time of year it was, but it was dark out. We're walking, and there was a river that ran the length of this trailer park. And one of us noticed these lights coming up from that area and got the rest of our attention to look over at it. And what we witnessed was what looked like five red lights in the formation of what you'd see on, like, a die dice, you know, a box of
Show Assistant / Co-host
red lights with one in the middle
Marcus / Dale / Other Callers
coming up from the river, straight up, raging, straight up in the air. And this thing was like the size of a house. It was not small. And we see this thing go straight up in the air. We'll say we watched it for maybe 10 seconds. At that point, it stops as it reaches as high as it gets, and then starts going away from us. As we're watching it, we're freaking out. And one of my buddies yells something at it. They swore at it, and I'm not saying that him swearing at it had anything to do with the next thing that happened, but when he did that, the thing stopped and then started coming towards us. So we hauled it, we took off running. We run down the rest of that street, turn left into the trailer park and turn left again and run down this road to get to whoever's house we were going to. And as we're running down the road, we see another person we know standing outside their house freaking out and asking us if we saw what they saw. And we're like, yeah, you know, we're freaking out, like, telling them what we saw, and they're saying what they saw. And as we're doing this, a cop comes flying up, slams on his brakes, hops out of his car and says, excuse my language. Did you kids see that? And at that moment, we're like, okay, we definitely saw something that was out of the norm for this person, an officer of the law, to be asking a group of kids if they just saw a UFO in the sky. That's pretty much the majority of the story. I mean, me and friends who witnessed this have talked about it on and off for over 20 years now. I have watched countless UFO things on TV, on YouTube, movies. I listen to podcasts, I've done a lot of reading. And I have never once heard of this exact craft being described by anyone. So if anybody out there has seen something like this or has heard of someone else seeing something like this, please call in, because I would Love to, to know that we weren't the only ones to have seen this thing because it's just been a crazy, enigmatic thing in my life for the past 20 some years.
Derek Hayes (Host)
Thank you, Marcus. Well, folks, if you've seen something similar, you know what to do. And you know, now that I'm thinking about it, a police officer in the state of Minnesota has good reason to be nervous about a UFO in the area. Famously, back in 1979, a police officer named Val Johnson was on patrol in Stevens, Minnesota when he and his car were struck by a strange unidentified light that was hovering over the route. It damaged part of his vehicle, caused him to pass out, and caused the clock in his car and his watch to stop at the exact same moment. I've linked to more information on Val Johnson's story, so if you would like to dig deeper, you can. But knowing all that, perhaps the officer there had good reason to freak out. Now, when it comes to UFOs in the state of Minnesota, here is how things stack up. According to Newfork, that's the National UFO Reporting Center. Minnesota ranks 23rd in the U.S. for UFO sightings. And here are the top nine cities in the state when it comes to ufo reports. At nine we have Woodbury, eight is St. Cloud, seven is Burnsville, six is Bemidji, five is Lakeview, four is Rochester, three is Duluth, two is St. Paul, and number one is, of course, Minneapolis. Now, if you find yourself in any of these locations, you just might want to look up to the stars. Thank you again, Marcus, for making the phone call. Now, I sure can't say that this next one is paranormal per se, but it sure is weird. Please welcome Christy to tonight's program.
Christy (Caller)
Hi Derek and everybody at Monsters Among Us. This is Christy from Minnesota. So I was listening to this last week stories again and a gentleman was talking about. He said it was a dream that he had where a lady in a church told him she'd be back for a nighter. And it reminded me of something that happened to me almost 14 years ago. I was working two jobs because I always worked two jobs until I got married. And I was also part of a group that did a lot of intercessory prayer for, well, very sick. And during one of those prayer sessions, there were several of us in a room praying. And another person who knew about us and would join us occasionally came in with a friend of his. Unfortunately, this friend of his was scary. He said some things and did some things that were not appropriate in Vince Co. In any way. Shape or form. And he admitted to having urges to hurt women. So the guys kind of cut him off and, you know, made arrangements for him to come back another time when it would just be died for safety purposes. How this connects with my second job is that I worked for a bookstore that was closing, long story, but we had a smaller store set up for what we hadn't sold yet to be sold before the final dissolution of the store. And I was working alone one night. It was probably about three or four hours before close. It's really a dead night. And the gentleman who'd been in for prayer a couple of nights prior shows up. And I recognize him because it's only been a couple of nights. And I'm like, okay, does he recognize me? Is he dangerous? I'm not sure what's going to happen. I put something heavy like a stapler or something in the back pocket of my jeans just to have something. And lo and behold, in walk a security guard, clean uniform as the security guards in my mall, but not somebody that I recognize. And he goes, hey, Christy, how you doing tonight? I'm like, ok, how are you? He goes, you don't recognize me, do you? And I'm like, no. He goes, I'm a friend of your brother. So he's talking to me about my brother and blah, blah, blah. And I'm like, are you still working? He goes, no, I don't even work in this mall. I just was clapping and he's noticing
Show Assistant / Co-host
that I keep looking at the back
Christy (Caller)
of the store where this other gentleman
Show Assistant / Co-host
is, and he goes, what's wrong? And I said, well, I happen to
Christy (Caller)
know that that guy in the back of the store has fantasies about hurting women. And I'm here alone tonight. Do you mind staying for a little while until he leaves? He goes, sure, I have no problem with that.
Show Assistant / Co-host
So we sat and we talked and, you know, I did my work.
Christy (Caller)
And he stayed even after the other
Show Assistant / Co-host
guy left and kind of stayed until I was closing.
Christy (Caller)
And then he's like, oh, I think he'll be okay now, so I'm gonna head out.
Show Assistant / Co-host
And I thanked him and I said, I'll let my brother know I saw you. And he goes, great idea. And he left.
Christy (Caller)
So a couple of days later, I see my brother and I'm like, hey,
Show Assistant / Co-host
do you recognize the name? And I gave him the name of
Christy (Caller)
the gentleman that I don't even remember the name he gave me anymore.
Derek Hayes (Host)
And he goes, no.
Show Assistant / Co-host
And I said, wow, that's really weird because he came into the store and
Christy (Caller)
he knew you he knew your friends and he stuck around and kind of
Derek Hayes (Host)
helped me out of a tight situation.
Show Assistant / Co-host
And I told my brother the story and he goes, I have no idea
Christy (Caller)
who that would have been.
Show Assistant / Co-host
So I told my friend who I'd
Christy (Caller)
been praying with the next time we met, and they're like, christy, that was
Show Assistant / Co-host
probably an angel came to protect you because the guy who came into the
Derek Hayes (Host)
store was just not good news.
Show Assistant / Co-host
So makes me wonder about protectors out
Derek Hayes (Host)
there as well as scary stuff.
Show Assistant / Co-host
Thought I'd share. Bye.
Derek Hayes (Host)
Thank you, Christy. Now, I can't say if the guy was an angel or not, but it sure was a good thing that he was around whoever he was. A mystery man in Minnesota. Thanks again, Christy, for calling in 2 o' clock on Sunday afternoon. We'll see you next week.

Now for this next one, we have to go back, way back, hundreds of years. I'll let Bryce do the explaining.
Bryce (Caller)
Hi, monsters among us. I'm Bryce. I'm coming from Minnesota. I was about 12, 13 years old. So I was home alone. One day I decided to go on my very first phone, right? And I went downloaded this app, Ouija Boards, just to screw around because I was bored, I was young. So I went on there and I started messing around and I wasn't sure
Show Assistant / Co-host
if this was real or not.
Bryce (Caller)
It felt very, very, very real. I felt some dread coming from the app I was using. I was talking to this one Specific spirit. They had said that they had died near the apartment complex I was living at in Medina. And. I don't know, she said she was 700 years old and she died from being murdered. And she said that she was spiritually raped behind me, and I had my back to the wall. And then I decided I was gonna leave. And it just kept getting, like, scarier and scarier because every single time I said goodbye, the planchette said no. And I kept doing it. And my phone started glitching. Then I left the app, restarted my phone, and it was gone. I deleted the app. And then I started feeling better. But then, say, about a week passes after that, and I'm home alone, actually, a lot, because my mom was out working while my little brothers were at daycare. And I would come home at the school, and I would just sit home, watch tv. And about a week after that, I started experiencing some pretty weird phenomena. I started hearing a lot of things around my house. I started seeing things. My lights were flickering a lot. I'm not really sure if it was because I didn't close the planchette or the Ouija board directly, but I just started seeing more, like, shadowy figures around my house. Like, there was one time I was walking my hallway, and I see black fingers and a black head right outside my bedroom door. I run to my bedroom, and then I look inside. There's nothing there. Also, every time I went downstairs to, like, bring the dirty clothes to the washer or bring the clothes from the dryer up, right? I couldn't handle it. I felt so much dread in my basement that every single time I was down there, I just couldn't stop shaking. I couldn't stop looking around, just make sure nothing was happening. I couldn't stop listening for specific things because I was just that scared. It was that dreadful. And every single time I ran upstairs, I just darted for the door. It sounded like something was following me up the stairs. Like, it sounded like stomping right behind me. And every time I got to the top of the stairs, I looked behind me, and nothing's there. I appreciate you guys for letting me talk. Thank you for your time.
Show Assistant / Co-host
Bye.
Derek Hayes (Host)
Thank you, Bryce. Now, you know, I'm not too sure how much stock I put in these paranormal apps. There are more than a few Ouija board apps out there, and there's a few ghost detectors and even a spirit box app or two. In the way that I look at all of them is this. If they don't flat out say exactly how and why they work they typically assume that they don't. But that's not the story that Bryce is giving out. Based on the strange occurrences he's experienced, there just might be something to it. A 700-year-old spirit, you don't hear that every day. And for that, we thank you, Bryce, for making the call. Now, folks, this is the portion of the program where I would normally point you toward our merchandise shop, but I think you should hold off a couple of weeks because that brand new Dogman design is about to come in. In the meantime, stand by and I'll let you know when you should swing over and pick one up today. Now here's a strange story. Please welcome Tanya to the program.
VRBO Announcer
Hello, this is Tanya from North Central Minnesota. Today I wanted to share with you a vivid memory from my childhood that has never really been explainable. So this happened on the Mille Lacs Ojibwe Reservation near Mille Lacs Lake in Minnesota. I was with my father and his brother Mike, who was a part of the reservation and lived there. It was fall, and I would say I was six years old. I'm 38 now. To kind of give you context of how long ago this was. So it was very fall. All the leaves were off of the trees. It was very chilly. And that's what I distinctly remember is all the big maple trees and the chill in the air and all the leaves laying on the path. We were walking. My dad and his brother were walking in front of me, talking on the trail, and I was poking around behind. So I just had a stick and I was walking with the stick and poking things, looking at things. I would say I was maybe 100ft behind them because I can still vividly picture seeing them not too far ahead of me. So as I'm walking through the forest, I noticed something on my left that just popped.
Show Assistant / Co-host
Bam.
VRBO Announcer
It was there. And it was distinctly a tall teepee. This teepee was almost camouflaged with the forest. It was a little bit rough. I remember there being smoke. I don't remember smelling the smoke, but I do remember smoke emerging from this teepee or at least around it. I believe I remember seeing a hide stretched out somewhat. There was like sticks in the ground, standing up maybe 4ft apart from each other and then tied to those sticks with like a string looking material. Was this skin, an animal skin, probably a deer, but this was a full on tall teepee. I was six, so of course it did seem probably a lot bigger than it really was. And it wasn't really far off the trail. It was 10ft off the trail to the left. So I started running up to my dad and my uncle. They kept moving forward and I wanted to stop and I wanted to look at this. I wanted to investigate this. Why are we walking past? This is what I was thinking. I ran up trying to get their attention. They're totally blowing me off. I'm like, dad, dad, dad, I want to look at the teepee. Can we stop and look at the teepee? And totally disregarded me the entire time. There isn't a teepee. Thanh. What are you talking about? The classic things, unfortunately, that parents do. But finally I got my dad to agree. On the way back, we would stop and look at the teepee. So I was mesmerized and fixated on this, like so excited. We're gonna go inside. I want to see what it's like inside. Well, on our way back, I fought the same trail. Well, it wasn't there. And I remember just being obsessed. Like, where is it? It's got to be here any minute. Any minute. Where is it? Where is it? On this trail? And it wasn't there. So fast forward through time, teen years, I remembered this. Early adulthood. I remembered this. I remember talking to my mom about this. Nobody really cared. Like whatever you think you saw on tp, I got to a point where I thought, okay, well there's no proof that I saw this. This was just some weird memory that is probably completely made up because after that, the movie Pocahontas came out and I became obsessed. And I was all obsessed with Native American culture. And so this was something that became a really big part of me. And I thought this wasn't a real memory. Well, I was going through my mom's file cabinet with her and we were going through old artwork and kind of skimming through things she had saved through the years that kids make in school. And here kindergarten year, on a little journal that we would make for class where we would draw something and then try to write out something. There was a little stick person of me pointing up and sure thing, there was a drawing of a teepee. And in my little five or six year old handwriting, it says, today I saw a teepee. I couldn't believe it. It's like the memory is real. Even if I never saw it again with my dad on that walk back, I truly, thoroughly believed that I Saw a teepee. So further research, as I got older and I went to a Native American museum actually over in the Mille Lacs Lake area, I learned that wigwams were used in the summer and teepees were fall and winter homes. And we also had Lakota here in Minnesota before the Chippewa. And there was a little bit of a battle, especially in that area, and the Lakota were moved out and they were TP users. So, long story short, this was a very realistic likely thing that could have happened, especially back in the past. So I don't know if it was a glitch, if it was a timeline thing, if it was somebody that was living that way off of the trail and somehow maybe we took a different trail back, even though that I don't believe was the case. Either way, this is a memory that has stuck with me my entire life. And I'm really curious if anyone has any opinions on this and what this could have been. Thank you so much.
Christy (Caller)
Bye.
Derek Hayes (Host)
We appreciate the call, Tanya. A teepee in the middle of the Minnesota wilderness? Well, as Tanya said, there is and has been a strong Native American presence in that area for a very long time. So that certainly makes her sighting a possibility. Now the real question is, did Tanya see a ghost camp of some sort, A spirit in its surroundings preserved in time and replayed during perfect conditions? Or was this a time slip situation and Tanya got a short but clear glimpse into the past as she sort of suggested. Now, I can tell you that six year old me would have had a field day with this experience. So I'm a little bit jealous of Tanya. But at the very least, we're grateful to have the opportunity to hear the tale. So thank you again, Tanya, for bringing it.

And there was this big thud upstairs in the house. And we were out in the backyard. And then the whole scene just went black. And all I saw was this heavy set blonde. She was built like a lumberjack and her hair was cut down to her shoulders. She was wearing a blue shirt and tan shorts. I seen this lady standing in front of me and I'm stuck in the position of laying on the floor, but with my hands and palms touching the floor behind me as I'm sitting up, Almost as if this thing made me do that and it kept offering me something. And I heard a voice in my head, just say no. Just say no. Just say no. And I could feel hands gripping my wrists and holding them to the floor. And she said, take my finger if you accept this deal. And I told her, no, you need to go, you don't belong here, you're not allowed here.
Chuck / Gonzalo / Other Callers
Be gone.
Cody (Caller)
And I woke up and I was in the same exact position I was in talking to this thing in my dream. But a month later, I'm getting my surgery and I was talking to my grandma. And I share all my paranormal experiences with my grandma. She's kind of the person I go to for that stuff. And she said, no way. You're talking about the same person I've seen in my dream. And she said she needed help mowing her lawn. And grandma grabbed her lawnmower and she was pushing this lawnmower behind this blonde lady. She's following her. They go through all these doors and caverns and they get to the house. And once they're finally at the house, the whole lawn is covered in snow. And then she wakes up only to a week later for me to tell her my story.
Bryce (Caller)
Pretty crazy.
Cody (Caller)
But in my dream, her face turned to the devil's face. Sharp teeth, frog like red skin, no hair, horns. In fact, very short horns, but they were there. And he chuckled as he turned away and he said, I'll get you two. And he just left.
Bryce (Caller)
Thanks, Derek.
Cody (Caller)
That's my story.
Derek Hayes (Host)
Thank you, Cody. Nightmare fuel. Quite literally. Now, as creepy as this mystery woman was, this next one might even be creepier. Sean, it's your turn.
Sean (Caller)
Hi, my name is Sean. I'm originally from Minnesota. I live in Oregon now. But most of my paranormal experiences happen in Minnesota. This was when I was like 7, 8 years old. I grew up in a house, a good sized house, two story. And my wallpaper was like lion, zebra, giraffe. It was like a continuous pattern.
Chuck / Gonzalo / Other Callers
It was just.
Sean (Caller)
And it scared me for some reason. So I always wanted to sleep with my mom in her bed. But I woke up and my eyes were closed, But I felt like I was pressed up against something. So when I opened my eyes, I noticed I was pressed up against the ceiling. I was probably like maybe 6ft off the bed. Just pressed up against the ceiling. Like something was pushing me up against the ceiling. I kind of like looked over my shoulder and looked down at my mom and I saw she was sleeping. And next to her bed there was a window. I looked to my left and I looked out the window and I saw this little blonde girl. She was glowing. And she was looking up at me and she was praying. As soon as I saw this and realized what I was looking at, I
Derek Hayes (Host)
like kind of flinched.
Sean (Caller)
I don't know, maybe turned my head back because I was scared. And I fell back down onto the bed. And it woke my mom up. And she was mad. She kicked me out of the room, made me go sleep in my room. It happened again the second time, I'm not sure how long after the first incident, But I did fall back down to the bed. And again she woke up.
Chuck / Gonzalo / Other Callers
She was really just pissed.
Sean (Caller)
And she told me, you know, get out, go to your own room. Ever since then, as I got older and older, the paranormal just kind of increased in activity. I still deal with stuff every day, but I just don't pay it attention. And it doesn't really bother me anymore. But I just recently started listening to the show. I like what I hear.
Show Assistant / Co-host
Thanks.
Derek Hayes (Host)
But thank you, Sean. Now those Minnesota ghosts don't mess around. That much is clear. No, a big thanks, Sean, for giving us a shot. And if you like spooky stories, you found the Right place. And since there are lots of new ears out there checking out the program, if you haven't already, please consider sharing the show with anyone you think might like it. The more listeners we have, the bigger the net we cast. That means we have more stories to pull from, and that means we get the best stories. So again, share the show any way you know how. Word of mouth is vital to our survival. Not to be dramatic about it, but speaking of dramatic, the ghosts up there in the Gopher State sure seem to have a flair for drama. Now, to prove my point and to round out this ghostly triple header, please welcome Gonzalo to the program.
Chuck / Gonzalo / Other Callers
Hello, my name is Gonzalo. I just thought I'd call in about story. Back in 1993, I was dating a young gal that was the beginning of our relationship and she lived St. Paul, Minnesota. I lived in St. Paul also, so I was over there frequently. So when we were going to bed, the TV would turn on by itself. I thought it was the kids, but they were little, so it wasn't the kids because I checked on them over and over again. And then one of the other things that really, really disturbed me is when I got up one morning for work instead of taking a shower, I was washing my hair and next thing you know, I felt the finger on my right side of my shoulder and I jumped. I thought I was one of the kids again. But why would the kids be up at 6am in the morning? So no, it wasn't the kids. And then the following day I got up to take a shower this time and the faucet right next to the shower turned on by itself. So I thought it was the children again. No, I peeked around. There was nobody there. The door was shut. I didn't hear no footsteps. Nobody came in and said, it's me. Nothing. In another occasion, she was out with her friends and I was home alone with the kids watching Jay Leno. I was hearing children running back and forth in the downstairs apartments. But her sister moved out two weeks prior. Before that, I even went down there and checked. Nobody there at all. I just could not believe it. And then several occasions I would hear laughter outside the window. And that laughter for children, like they were playing outside late night. But there was nobody around because I checked. And I think that children were actually haunting that building. Thank you very much. Keep it spooky. Love the show. Take care. Bye bye.
Derek Hayes (Host)
Thanks, Gonzalo. Talk about making contact. Now, I had no idea Minnesota was such a ghostly place, but that certainly seems to be the case. Now, with haunted locations in Minnesota on the brain, lets go through a few of the more infamous hauntings in the state. We begin our tour with the Palmer House Hotel in Sauk center. Built in 1901 atop the charred remains of a hotel destroyed by fire, the Palmer House Hotel quickly established itself as one of Minnesota's most mysterious landmarks. Hotel staff and visitors have described hearing echoes of ghostly laughter, feelings of sudden cold spots, and witnessing shadow figures appear, then vanish. Among the spirits believed to haunt the Palmer House is Lucy, a mischievous young entity known for playing pranks, and a shadowy man in a top hat who silently observes from the dim corners. Now we go outdoors for this next one. Dead Man's Trail and Thief River Falls. The Dead Man's Trail winds through dense, untamed woods in northern Minnesota, shrouded in local legends that have endured for generations. The secluded trail is said to be a hotspot for time slips, and hikers have reported apparitions drifting through the trees, disembodied whispers, and a sudden feeling of dread and the sensation of being watched from afar. And finally, we have the Nopepping Sanatorium in Duluth. Originally built early in the 20th century to house tuberculosis patients. No Pemming Sanitarium, located on the outskirts of Duluth, also served as an orphanage and a rest home before closing in 2002. The abandoned structural remains are said to be haunted by a former nurse working dutifully at her station and an older man who sits in a wheelchair waiting for family members who will never arrive. Visitors also report hearing the sounds of anguished wails coming from the surgery rooms. Now, maybe we should add Cody, Sean, and Gonzalo's places to that list. Amazing stuff, gentlemen, and a huge thanks for taking the time to share. Now, gang, I have to take tonight's last ad break, but when I return, well, you'll see. Please don't touch that dial.

I'm not sure how number 89 gets that wide open, but I'll take it. Now to round things out here tonight, please join me in welcoming Wayne to this evening's program.
Show Assistant / Co-host
Hey, my name is Wayne. I live in northern Minnesota in a beautiful town called Duluth. I also live in the original orphanage of Duluth that was completed in 1903. I mean, this is a very big building, like a cream brick building right from 1903. And there's a huge three season porch with, like, pillars in it and all that kind of stuff. This is the second time I've lived in here, so I guess I'm a glutton for punishment. The first time I lived here, I came home from work one night and I used to work late, so I probably got home around 12. And I parked my car in the parking lot and I looked in my rear view mirror and all I saw was the bottom of, like, a man's legs and very, very shiny shoes standing at the top of the stairs that lead into the building. Then four hours later or so, it was quite a while, I ended up actually making it into the building. And my girlfriend at the time told me that when I came in, I was freezing cold. So we're talking, you know, like late September, early October, but Duluth, Minnesota, it's cold. So she kept talking to me and she was like, what is going on? I heard your car and then you were out there for like, a really long time. And I just kept saying, he made me walk the stairs. I was being punished. He made me walk the stairs. So I don't know if that was the headmaster of this building doing that or I really have no clue. But another weird thing that happened which actually made her and I leave the building is I walked in one time, and it was probably a week or two after that experience. We walked in through the front door and we had just gone grocery shopping. And I walked into the building and she was like, okay, what's going on? Because I just froze. And I said, I have to get it. She's like, what are you talking about? And I said, I have to get it. And I turned to the left and I put the groceries down and I walked over to one of the wood pillars which is inside the structure and I pulled off a panel and I found this little die cast truck. So I pulled it out and I walked it over to her and I said, there, I found it. And she went, that's it, we're out. So I agree. We move out, we find a house on the east hillside of Duluth and then we move in there as a rental property. And it turned out to be a Christian Catholic boys home from 1912. So we moved from an orphanage from 1903 into a Christian boys home from 1912 and nothing happened there. But now I reside in the orphanage again and there are things going on here. It's not like that first time where I was made to walk the stairs. I believe that there are spirits in here. I've had a lot of weird stuff happen, but my cat, there's definitely a child in here or something like that that is playing with my cat because I will just be sitting and all of a sudden she looks at the corner and just takes off. So anyway, thank you for your show. I love it. Goodbye.
Derek Hayes (Host)
Thank you. Wayne. What an incredible list of insanely unsettling occurrences made to walk the stairs. What's that all about? And how in the hell did he know that there was a truck behind that wall? Now, I hate to tell people what to do here, Wayne, but maybe it's time you got a normal apartment like everyone else. Because whatever's at that orphanage, it seems too heavy in for you. "Land of 10,000 Paranormal Encounters: Stories from Minnesota"
Hosted by Derek Hayes | April 7, 2026 | Audioboom Studios
In this state-themed episode, Derek Hayes curates a chilling collection of first-hand paranormal encounters from Minnesota, "The Land of 10,000 Lakes." Listeners share their personal stories of ghosts, UFOs, mysterious entities, time slips, and haunted locations, all recounted in their own voices. Hayes weaves in local lore and expert commentary, building a spooky, nostalgia-drenched journey through the supernatural side of the North Star State.
“Parts of it sound like it could be sleep paralysis, but other parts also sound a lot like an alien abduction experience.”
“That’s a glitch in the matrix, Derek.”
“Did you kids see that?”
“That was probably an angel came to protect you…”
“Today I saw a teepee.”
“He made me walk the stairs…I was being punished.”
[47:34] Palmer House Hotel (Sauk Centre)
[48:13] Dead Man’s Trail (Thief River Falls)
[48:40] Nopeming Sanatorium (Duluth)
Hayes maintains an inviting, mysterious, and slightly playful tone, balancing audience engagement with genuine respect for the experiences shared. Listeners’ calls are unfiltered and colloquial, often ending with encouragements to “keep it spooky” and gratitude for the show’s community.
Derek Hayes expresses astonishment at Minnesota’s density of supernatural tales. He thanks contributors, reiterates call-in opportunities for more stories, and teases next episode’s Sasquatch and UFO content. The closing is marked by Hayes’ signature sign-off:
“You keep it spooky and have yourselves a good night.” ([58:55])
