David Borey
Nicolas Cage has been been every version of a person in Hollywood. He's been a joke, he's been a fraud. He's been somebody we we treated like.
Langston Kerman
An idiot, but he's always been white. We haven't seen him switch it. We haven't seen.
Trey Farrow
I would go crazy like now. I would like that Latino Nicholas Cage.
David Borey
I would like that quite a bit.
Langston Kerman
I think Tyler Perry can make that happen. Nicolas Cage, Tyler Perry.
Trey Farrow
I Think they need to collab Made inside of those two can only link together for evil I think.
Langston Kerman
I think tubie can make it happen Anyway.
David Borey
The ozone layer owes me money Marching to bed and dirty stuffing tell me nothing.
Trey Farrow
So I creep, Yeah, I just keep it on the down low? Cause no one else is supposed to know. Welcome, little mamas and gentiles alike, to another phenomenal episode of My Mama Told.
David Borey
Me, the podcast where we dive deep, deep into the pockets of black conspiracy.
Trey Farrow
Theories, and we finally work to prove that Andre 3000 has lost a couple of those numbers. Is Andre 2643, too, after that flute shit?
David Borey
My name is David Ward, man. I don't like hearing it, but I'm like, C German. Yeah.
Trey Farrow
I think that I exaggerated the number, the amount of numbers he lost, because.
David Borey
Yeah, it's. It's like.
Trey Farrow
It's in, like, the 2389. He's good. He's. Yeah, yeah. And I just don't like flutes. That's not his fault.
David Borey
I think he's. I think he's still only lost a few points, but. But it. Yeah, you. You just want that rap album, baby.
Trey Farrow
Yeah. Someday. Someday. I feel like a Trump presidency if it pushes us to a new 3000 album.
David Borey
Go ahead, finish your sentence.
Trey Farrow
Not as bad as it could have been, is all I'm saying.
David Borey
Finish your sentence. Four days. Four days in, you're like, this ain't so bad.
Trey Farrow
Oh, man, I've already resigned to it, man.
David Borey
This man's not even in the Oval Office again yet. You're like, nah, we'll be all right.
Trey Farrow
Gotta look on the bright side, Langston.
David Borey
We can't delete or dally any more than we already have. Our guest today is in studio with us. She's phenomenal. A dear friend, an artist, a comedian, a unit.
Langston Kerman
Come on, Lacey, do it.
David Borey
But so much more. She's a dear friend. We're so happy she's here. Give it up for Sydney Washington, everybody.
Langston Kerman
You know, black men. What an intro. I mean, no credits. Just. She's a person.
David Borey
She's vibes.
Langston Kerman
She's alive.
Trey Farrow
They love you, though.
Langston Kerman
She's funny. Thank you. I appreciate y' all.
David Borey
We love all vibes over here.
Langston Kerman
So I have. So you don't like the flute?
Trey Farrow
I'm not.
Langston Kerman
You not here for the flute.
Trey Farrow
I don't have discerning a taste enough to understand how good it is, I think.
Langston Kerman
Really? So that's a. That's a you thing.
Trey Farrow
That's what I said in the intro. I was like, it's you know, I'm not a fluke guy. It doesn't mean he's not expanding.
Langston Kerman
No, he's already expanded, baby. He did it.
Trey Farrow
So you left us behind.
David Borey
First of all, you're.
Langston Kerman
And I'm hurt. Catch up.
Trey Farrow
And I'm hurt. And I'm just a bitter ex.
David Borey
He ascended.
Trey Farrow
Yeah.
Langston Kerman
Yeah, a bitter ex. He's doing better than you, babe. He's working hard.
David Borey
The way you're going hard for this suggests to me that you did like the flute album.
Langston Kerman
No, absolutely not. But I say it's all about elevation. You have to elevate. You have to be a tastemaker. You can't be doing what everybody else is doing because they're doing it. You understand? If. If everybody is on the train rapping for dollar bills, Andre is like, no, no, no. I don't want to be associated with that. Flutes. I don't see flutes everywhere.
David Borey
That's fair.
Trey Farrow
That implies that he's not competitive. Like, if everybody on the trail was rapping, he's still rapping better than all the people for dollars.
Langston Kerman
We've moved on. We've done it.
Trey Farrow
Have you moved on?
Langston Kerman
Yes, we have.
Trey Farrow
You just said you didn't like it.
Langston Kerman
I don't like it because I don't have an ear for it.
Trey Farrow
Well, that's what I said. That's what he said.
Langston Kerman
You know what? I just. Christopher Columbus, your whole shit. How does it feel?
Trey Farrow
Terrible.
Langston Kerman
How does it feel, white man?
Trey Farrow
Terrible.
David Borey
You?
Langston Kerman
Yes.
Trey Farrow
Just because there's one on my shirt doesn't mean there's one in my arm.
Langston Kerman
Oh.
David Borey
Why did you direct that at me? I don't know.
Langston Kerman
I was panicking.
Trey Farrow
I was helping you. I was panicking.
Langston Kerman
I come here to dismantle this brotherhood, and it's working.
Trey Farrow
That's the truly bold in and of itself. What? We're united. We got pictures on our shirts. I see stronger than we've ever been.
Langston Kerman
It hurts to see this. Like you. Obviously, y' all are really good at whatever you're doing, and I have to support it. I salute you.
David Borey
I think by whatever you're doing, you mean talking to niggas at the mall.
Langston Kerman
Yeah.
David Borey
Excuse me, man. You think you could pull this off.
Trey Farrow
And he could shut out?
Langston Kerman
It looks good. Y' all. Look.
Trey Farrow
Jay Romero in a mall. I don't know the name of how much it costs.
David Borey
Enough. Ooh, yeah. No, this don't come cheap, sweetheart. You're gonna want that podcast to get at least a few more episodes in.
Langston Kerman
Clearly, if I want to start buying.
Trey Farrow
Shirts, I'm a bill Will Ferrell for this. This isn't even.
Langston Kerman
Oh, absolutely. Send that invoice in and invoice Andre as well.
Trey Farrow
It feels like you were on my side, and then I lost you for a little bit.
David Borey
Okay, enough. Goddamn enough. We have a conspiracy that you brought to us. No more than two hours ago. You said, I have a conspiracy. This is something I believe passionately. And we broadened that conspiracy a little just to be able to open this conversation up. But you said, my mama told me Tyler Perry is the devil.
Langston Kerman
Absolutely. And specifically Cicely Tyson died to get out of her contract with him.
David Borey
Wow.
Langston Kerman
The new Death row.
David Borey
Okay.
Langston Kerman
If you don't want me. All in the video.
David Borey
All in the dress in the video. Dancing, hitting people with your purse that has a gun in it.
Trey Farrow
Writing in your diary.
David Borey
Pushing niggas down the stairs in their wheelchair.
Langston Kerman
Got Janet Jackson in her curly, wet and wavy crying.
Trey Farrow
That was a good cry, though.
David Borey
Crying about her husband on the down low.
Langston Kerman
So you doing the bending. But that is another movie. That's.
David Borey
Oh, that's not. Janet did multiple.
Langston Kerman
That's. That was for colored girls that considered suicide. That's.
David Borey
But she did multiple.
Langston Kerman
Yes.
Trey Farrow
Yeah, she did. I think I love my wife.
Langston Kerman
I think I love my wife.
Trey Farrow
No. Why did I.
Langston Kerman
Why did I get married? Why did I get married?
David Borey
Well, I knew she did multiple. Why did I get married? I didn't know that. She then also extended into, like, the multiverse of Tyler Perry.
Langston Kerman
Yes. That's.
David Borey
You know what I mean?
Trey Farrow
Like, I think that's how you do it.
Langston Kerman
That's how you do it. You don't just do. If you do one thing, you're bad, that means you're not useful. He can't.
David Borey
He can't capitalize on it, but some people sober up to it to some extent. Like, Taraji did one. She's not going back to Tyler's.
Trey Farrow
Did she do more than one? Was it just, I can do bad all by myself?
David Borey
I think she only did that. I can do bad all by myself. I could be wrong. But even if she did, Idris is another example of, like, I fucked around over here for a second, but I'm not.
Langston Kerman
What do you do? Daddy's little girl?
David Borey
Yeah. Daddy's little girl.
Langston Kerman
Yeah. That wasn't terrible. That wasn't bad.
Trey Farrow
The issue is not the quality of the movie. Some of them I really like.
Langston Kerman
Really? That's. It's not the quality.
David Borey
I. Yeah, I already.
Langston Kerman
I'm going to already faint. I stop the break.
Trey Farrow
I consume some of those movies, like junk food.
David Borey
Okay.
Trey Farrow
It's just like.
Langston Kerman
So it's not good for you.
Trey Farrow
There's no. Yeah, yeah, yeah. In small doses, though, it feels good. You know what I mean? Like, it's just like. There's no major problems. It's just rich black people running around.
David Borey
Oh, that's interesting.
Trey Farrow
That's like. I like that. I'm cool with that.
David Borey
You don't see them in the comedies.
Trey Farrow
Not in the ones where it's like. But you don't see them in any.
David Borey
Way, like, morally corrupt or sort of.
Trey Farrow
Like, harmful, the characters within the movie. Yeah, not more so than, like, I see anybody in any other movie. Like, I don't.
David Borey
Whoa.
Langston Kerman
Are you. Are you all the way awake when you watching this?
Trey Farrow
Yeah, pretty much.
Langston Kerman
Are you conscious?
Trey Farrow
It's like. It's like. Yeah, it's like, if you're feeling down, you just watch, like, a funny, happy movie.
Langston Kerman
If you're feeling down, you put on Tyler Perry.
Trey Farrow
There's a couple movies. Yeah, there's a couple movies.
Langston Kerman
Do you have a therapist?
Trey Farrow
We're in between.
David Borey
It's a moving brother named Tyler Perry.
Langston Kerman
Tyler Perry also does Tyler Perry.
David Borey
He says hello.
Trey Farrow
Yes.
Langston Kerman
Yeah.
Trey Farrow
I'm just saying it's a big. There's a big market for it. The reason I think he's the devil is not the actual movies.
David Borey
Whoa.
Trey Farrow
Okay. I think it's the labor practices that really kind of get to me.
David Borey
Okay. You know what I mean?
Langston Kerman
Explain.
Trey Farrow
Explain, like, not being union and stuff like that in an industry where, like, the standard is to work union. So it's like you're already putting the people who work with you at, like, a little bit of a disadvantage, right?
David Borey
Yeah, yeah.
Trey Farrow
And then it's like. So it's like you build this thing that is massive and does give a lot of jobs, and that's very important, but you make it so that these people are tied to you in a way.
David Borey
Yeah.
Trey Farrow
You understand creating.
Langston Kerman
To where it's like.
Trey Farrow
If you were allowing people to bounce over here and here and here and get money and that was cool, then it makes sense. But now it feels like if you're keeping a stable, it feels like you're not allowing people to grow.
David Borey
I'm my brother's keeper. I. I know a few barbers who have, like, dipped in and out of, like, the Tyler Perry space, and all of them sort of like, in a weird way, get sort of like, ah, nah, I'm not going back over there. Or I want to go over there. I gotta really be down to be over there. Cause you're working Crazy hours. You're sort of being manipulated in this space. And then I think they're expecting a commitment that you can't back out of easy. You know what I mean?
Langston Kerman
Yeah. Well, because it's like again, it's that thing about like exposure. You're like, well, I'm in this, so this is actually gonna help me. And then after a couple rounds of it, you're like, wait, I'm still a bartender?
David Borey
Yeah.
Langston Kerman
I mean, I'm a well known bartender. People know me. But I still have to bartend on the side because I can't. I can't make everything ends meet.
David Borey
I also think where it gets complicated is to your point, the stink that it puts on you once you do become a little bit of a Tyler Perry person. You know what I mean? Like, did we see maximum Allen Payne potential? Wow.
Trey Farrow
This is. I need to say, personally, I didn't even know.
Langston Kerman
You threw me for a loop.
Trey Farrow
This is the third time you threw me for a little bit. The second time we talked about Alan Payton a week.
David Borey
You know what I mean?
Trey Farrow
Great.
Langston Kerman
You mean Jason's lyrics? The Alan Payne.
David Borey
He was a great.
Langston Kerman
He was in everything.
Trey Farrow
Come on. He was from the 80s.
Langston Kerman
He was in everything.
Trey Farrow
He had like a 10 year run.
Langston Kerman
He was gonna. He was in every six. He was on the Cosby shoes.
David Borey
He was handsome.
Langston Kerman
Handsome hot. Yeah, that curl pattern. Yeah, you don't see that kind of curl pattern now. And it was a natural, natural curl pattern.
David Borey
He was. He was a clearly black man.
Langston Kerman
Yes.
David Borey
With a natural curl. This nigga had it all.
Trey Farrow
Yeah, you would've. I would've bet the house on it. Yeah, I would've bet the house on it.
David Borey
And he sunk his fucking ship over there. What happened? Do you know what I mean? Give us back Allen Payne. Tyler Perry.
Langston Kerman
Or what? Or wait, was it Tyler Perry or that? It was just like Allen Payne had got typecasted so many times that we were like. We didn't seen this song and dance.
Trey Farrow
But there is a level of. That is a difficult thing, right? If you get typecast that much, but you don't grow to a level where it's unanimous that people know you're. That you kind of can't work in that forever.
David Borey
But I'll challenge you all. I will challenge you on this because on the flip, look at Bo. Keem Woodbine, who, who went through it, had like this heightened moment where he was sort of typecast as this like crazy eyed villain and shit, but then took a break, came back, came back chubby, and now has Had a whole new career. Do you know what I mean? As sort of this older.
Langston Kerman
What is he.
David Borey
He did Fargo, which was amazing.
Langston Kerman
He did do Fargo. He was in Queen of Slim.
Ryan Seacrest
Yeah.
Langston Kerman
And they said that was the best part of the movie.
David Borey
Listen, Bo Keen Woodbine is the best. But he never went over there. And that's what I'm saying is that maybe there's a world where Alan Payne finds his true detective.
Trey Farrow
Okay?
David Borey
But we cut him short.
Langston Kerman
We gotta put him in an A24 situation.
Trey Farrow
We gotta get em all here.
Langston Kerman
I think some people, or once you get in mainstream, you have that opportunity to do all things, like bad, good things that you're like, why are you even a part of this? But certain specifically black people, once you get into that little corner, that's it. That's all you have. Like Glenn Close, she was in Deliverance. I'm coughing cause I can't even catch. I can't even breathe. The work that she did in that movie one, I was like, oh. She's like, I've done everything that I need to do. I have ascended to the point of let's play, let's have fun.
David Borey
She's like, I'll learn some patois.
Langston Kerman
Yeah, why not? Now, the wigs were not by Tyler Perry in that movie. Glenn Close, I almost was like, is she biracial? She was giving Rachel Dolezal a run for her fucking money. I'm gonna say that on air.
David Borey
As somebody who has not seen the movie, I assure you she is not.
Langston Kerman
She is.
David Borey
I looked at all the clips y' all were posting, and I was sober when I. You know what I mean? Like, y' all were enthralled. So you were bought into the whole experience. As somebody who did not experience it, I was like, this looks insane.
Langston Kerman
No. She said, nappy pussy on in the movie. And I said, whoo. We're gone.
Ryan Seacrest
She's gone.
Langston Kerman
She's like. But they were every. Everybody black was like, she's gotta win a Golden Globe for this.
David Borey
And everybody white was like, what the fuck are you talking about?
Langston Kerman
Is she unwell? Is her med. Where is her med? Is it the braids? Is it the braids? That's what the white people were saying with Glenn. But Glenn has done it all. She has proven herself so she can do that. But once you get into the. I feel like the Tyler Perry realm, it's kind of wrapped up.
David Borey
And I think that's the scary part, right? Is that even that movie? I don't. It's not a Tyler Perry production, right?
Langston Kerman
It's Lee Daniels, which is the cousin, the cousin of Tyler Perry.
David Borey
I think there. I think. And I don't disagree with you, I think Lee Daniels is Certainly Tyler Perry Jr. Yes, he would love to be Tyler Perry in some form or fashion. That said, I think Lee Daniels still. They let Lee Daniels do too much, you know what I mean, in the legitimate spaces where they gave him Oscars and nominations.
Langston Kerman
But he is. First of all, we have to. No, let's not be anti black. These brothers have done some good work. There have been some things.
Trey Farrow
That's what I was saying.
Langston Kerman
I know, Dave. I'm sorry. They have done really. They've been some pieces where you're like, you know what? This is art.
David Borey
Give me. And maybe we should take the break. This is a good way for us to go on break. I think this will be fun. When we come back, we're going to unpack some projects that we think are defendable for Tyler Perry and or Lee Daniels. We'll talk through the ones that we think are truly defendable and we'll talk about why. But we'll come back and we'll be back with more Sidney Washington and more my mama told me.
Howie Mandel
I can't tell you how often I hear, oh, I'm a little ocd. I like things neat. That's not ocd. I'm Howie Mandel and I know this because I have ocd. Actual OCD causes relentless, unwanted thoughts. What if I did something terrible and forgot? What if I'm a bad person? Why am I thinking this terrible thing? It makes you question absolutely everything and you'll do anything to feel better. OCD is debilitating, but it's also highly treatable with the right kind of therapy. Regular talk therapy doesn't cut it. OCD needs specialized therapy. That's why I want to tell you about no cd. NOCD is the world's largest virtual therapy provider for ocd. Their licensed therapist provides specialized therapy virtually and it's covered by insurance for over 155 million Americans. If you think you might be struggling with OCD, visit nocd.com to schedule a free 15 minute call and learn more. That's n o c d dot com.

Trey Farrow
We are back discussing our favorite Tyler Perry movies. Oh God, is that not.
David Borey
I don't know that that was the assignment at all.
Trey Farrow
I had to tweak it because your parameters weren't working.
David Borey
Okay. I think what it should be is more this question. If we're talking about these figures as evil right as as sort of spawn of Satan as as is sort of implied here, I think we should be careful to remind ourselves which pieces at least hold some value for the greater good of society. That it's less about whether or not that we like them and more do they actually benefit the larger world around us.
Langston Kerman
And I'm gonna go first.
Trey Farrow
Yeah.
Langston Kerman
So precious that Lee Daniels that was probably the most controversial and a Tyler Perry production. Everybody was involved. They had everybody.
David Borey
They had the Oprah was there.
Langston Kerman
Oprah was there. Lee Diaz Carey showed up movie. I watch it and I say yes, this definitely gives Sundance. This gives. It's indie. Yes. This is like it feels like low budget but in such an artistic way that I'm like, I can appreciate this now. The masses. The masses watching this story from the book Push. It was so hard. And Monique playing that mother so well, to the point where, like, do we like Monique?
David Borey
Yeah.
Langston Kerman
Do we like her?
Trey Farrow
Right.
Langston Kerman
I almost think that people weren't on her side because they almost thought, you are that mother that was in Precious. You were touching your daughter. Like, that's how controversial the movie was, is that everybody was playing the role so well that you're like, this might be their real lives. Mariah Carey. Mariah Carey. Rough draft. Mariah Carey. That was alarming. It was alarming. They threw on the beauty supply wig and they said, go.
David Borey
Yeah.
Langston Kerman
Little bit of concealer. But she was great. She was incredible.
David Borey
I love this as an answer because I similarly felt all of those things in seeing the film in theaters.
Langston Kerman
You went in theaters?
David Borey
I went in theaters.
Langston Kerman
You went in theaters.
David Borey
I had my little sisters with me.
Langston Kerman
No, you didn't.
David Borey
I swear to God. Because I was like, this is gonna be, like, a beautiful film of empowerment for them to see. Like, this big girl who overcomes and, like, figures out a way to move forward.
Langston Kerman
You didn't read the book. No, you didn't.
David Borey
And truly was just haunted by the experience. And so I asked this because I agree with you. I felt all those things. But how much of that was just a weird stacking of awful on top of awful and not really a human experience to make us better?
Langston Kerman
Well, T. I had a friend in it, Zosia, and I think this was her first big role. She killed it. I was like, so there. I'm being honest. I'm there. Supporting.
David Borey
Supporting.
Langston Kerman
That I enjoy. Right. But then it is somebody's story. So should we not.
David Borey
But it's not somebody's story that. You know what I mean? Like, parts of this are somebody's story. The experience of abuse is somebody's story. The experience of being overweight and the challenges of being poor is somebody's story. The experience of getting AIDS is somebody's story. But all of those combined into this single person. You know what I mean?
Langston Kerman
You don't think somebody get all those things. You don't think all that stuff can happen simultaneously? Yes, I'm sure. This is somebody's story. If you're listening and this is your story, I need you to write it and let.
David Borey
If you're listening and this is your story, please stop listening to this. Go seek help now, because you have so much going on that you don't have time to dilly or Dally with podcasts. Truly, this is. That's not. She was pregnant and didn't know she was pregnant. She was being assaulted by her mama and her daddy. She was. Mariah Carey was trying to. Or Paula Patton was trying to save her. But then they had. Yes, yes.
Langston Kerman
I be on TikTok all day, all night. That is somebody's story. The way people be just diarrhea of the mouth, just telling they business, they mama business, they cousins, cousins. And bad after bad after bad. I mean, I don't even turn on the TV no more because people are telling us our problems.
David Borey
I guess less than me saying it's impossible for anybody to experience this. I'm saying there's a point where it stops being any version of universal. It just starts being a singular fucked up story that nobody. It doesn't belong to black people, it doesn't belong to brown people. That bitch's life sucks.
Langston Kerman
Well, she's.
David Borey
Period.
Langston Kerman
Just say, don't be disrespectful. She's.
David Borey
I'm just saying that's her shit.
Langston Kerman
Yeah.
David Borey
And there's some people in this building that also have stories that are closer to like a universal experience. And I wonder about the tragedy porn. Even though for. For me, a person watching it, it worked. I was like, holy shit, this. This motherfucker is crazy.
Langston Kerman
Okay, what about Monster's Ball? Whoa, what about that? Halle Berry won it, won that award, won that golden ticket for this movie.
David Borey
It's worth noting. Monster's Ball, you said is a Lee Daniels production.
Langston Kerman
Yes, right. Okay, thoughts? I mean, she is getting banged out by Billy Bob Thornton the whole time. Not a drop of makeup, not a comb going through the hair.
David Borey
Yeah.
Langston Kerman
Diddy's in it.
David Borey
Diddy's in it.
Langston Kerman
Diddy's in it.
David Borey
It's actually, I think one of his first serious roles, if I'm not mistaken.
Langston Kerman
Honestly, he ate. He ate. He was in jail.
David Borey
He did pretty good. Look at the fourth shadow of that shit.
Langston Kerman
He was on death row, baby. The way the art work.
David Borey
I feel like he was on death row. And they never told us why either.
Langston Kerman
He did not know.
David Borey
They're just like. He was. He was acting up. We gotta.
Langston Kerman
Ledger was in it.
David Borey
Whoa. Heath Ledger was in my school.
Langston Kerman
Ledger was in it. Amazing. Rip. Shout out to him. I met him in real life. And sweet, sweet, sweet guy.
David Borey
Okay.
Langston Kerman
Yeah. Gave good tip too.
David Borey
Okay. Yeah, yeah, that's good. That's good.
Langston Kerman
Some people like to speak ill of the dead. Not me.
David Borey
Sydney came on here and so far has only defended white men. Yeah.
Langston Kerman
Cut, cut, cut. The camera's dead ass. Cut it like, no. How dare you? You've been dragging blacks left and right. All dark skinned.
David Borey
Mind you, that's my style.
Trey Farrow
Come.
David Borey
You, on the other hand, are selling your people out.
Langston Kerman
Monsters Ball. I. I mean, I. I enjoyed the rawness of it. Again, like, if this was like an 824 production, we'd be like, yeah, we're all in.
David Borey
Well, I think it did get all the love, right? It's another example of one. I think it won. Well, she won the Oscar for it, certainly. I think it's just like a lot of films where we sober up to what the fuck we watched three years ago. Do you know what I mean?
Langston Kerman
You're saying it didn't. It won then, but it wouldn't hold up right now.
David Borey
Crash won the Oscar for Best Picture and is now, like, people laugh at the idea that Crash was the best of the year.
Langston Kerman
Y' all didn't like the invisible cloak? He tried to cheat me. You don't like. You like Crash? Crash is a. Wait a minute. Hold up. Their dragon. Crash?
David Borey
Yeah. The people don't like Crashing. How come? Uh, because it starred Ludacris.
Langston Kerman
Now, that's the.
Trey Farrow
I don't think he's the worst part of that movie.
Langston Kerman
He was in 2 Fast 2 Furious. They loved that.
Trey Farrow
Yeah, it was Luda's time, guys.
David Borey
I'm not saying that Luda didn't do a fine job. I'm saying that you don't give a Ludacris film Best Picture.
Langston Kerman
Lorenz Tate was in it.
David Borey
That's true.
Langston Kerman
They had everybody and they mama in Crash. What are you talking about?
David Borey
Damn.
Langston Kerman
Sandra Bullock. Yeah, yeah, the Patient Queen. Sandra. Sandra Bullock.
David Borey
You know who.
Langston Kerman
Sandra Samuel Bullock.
David Borey
Yeah. You know, the only other type of movie that does movies like that where everybody's in it is like, them shitty movies where it's like Valentine's Day, New Year's Eve.
Langston Kerman
Ryan Phillipe was in it. Yeah, yeah, it was.
David Borey
It's too many big names for you to be managing a truly good story.
Langston Kerman
That's true.
David Borey
So then you just.
Langston Kerman
Like, in a. In a cheesy way, they were making their points. Yeah. But then we found out the people who wrote it were white. So that's what fucked us up. That's what it was.
David Borey
Which is why you pick Ludacris.
Trey Farrow
Yeah, yeah. And then you look at it as a whole and you're like, damn, it did just that.
David Borey
Yeah.
Trey Farrow
No, it did just what you thought they would do.
David Borey
Okay, so Monster's Ball is a Defendable for you. Precious is a defendable for you.
Langston Kerman
I wasn't mad at the movie Halle Berry winning the Oscar for it. I was like, damn, why we gotta be down and out to win? But they do that for everybody. Either you gotta. What's her name? Charlize Theron. She had to get ugly and murder niggas. Like, yeah.
David Borey
You know, I think the only difference is they can also escape through, like, musicals. Do you know what I mean? That, like Chicago. What's the LA one? That Star is Born. No, no, no. Although A Star is Born is another good example. It's not quite. It is a musical to some extent, but the one where they're.
Trey Farrow
Oh, la la land, La la land.
David Borey
Those. They can be joyful. They can be not, like, look like shit.
Langston Kerman
And when Leonardo DiCaprio was in everything, they didn't give him that award until he got raped by a bear. So you know what? Maybe Academy is just doing everybody wrong.
Ryan Seacrest
Actually.
Langston Kerman
Actually, it's one for one.
David Borey
It' I like that. That's what you think happened with that bear.
Langston Kerman
That's what I saw.
Trey Farrow
It's what it looked like.
Langston Kerman
That's what it looked like.
Trey Farrow
That's what it looked like.
Langston Kerman
Am I wrong when they said, would you rather be trapped in the forest with a bear or a man? I'm like, well, which bear? Because if it's the bear in the movie with Leonardo DiCaprio, absolutely not.
Trey Farrow
Yeah, he's gonna take it.
David Borey
That bear got him. I remember just learning what the premise of that movie was and thinking, damn, this is. Give this man the award. This seems crazy.
Langston Kerman
And they did. I think he read.
Trey Farrow
Did you guys watch it?
Langston Kerman
He read the script and said, you know what? It's time. It's time.
Trey Farrow
Now I gotta lock in.
Langston Kerman
Now I gotta lock in. He said, I froze to death in Titanic. Right? This is a different. This is a different type of death.
David Borey
I'm not dying.
Langston Kerman
I'm not dying. I'm living.
Trey Farrow
Mm.
Langston Kerman
Jack. Jack.
David Borey
Oh, her sweet voice.
J
Ever had a thought like, is my partner the one? Maybe we should break up? Since I'm not sure even though I'm happy or what if I lose control and hurt someone with this knife, even though I don't want to, I should hide all the knives and maybe stop cooking. I'm Nicole Rafi. I have ocd. And that's what OCD actually looks like. Not the stereotypes about cleanliness. Real OCD overwhelms with. With unwanted, distressing thoughts. Then you feel compelled to do something about these thoughts just to function. It's exhausting and isolating, but more common than you'd think and highly treatable with the right therapy. OCD needs specialized therapy, not standard talk therapy, which can make it worse. NOCD is the world's largest provider of specialized treatment for ocd. Their treatments are highly trained. They offer virtual sessions and support between sessions, and they're covered by insurance for over 155 million Americans. If this sounds familiar, visit nocd.com for a free call to learn how they can help. That's N O C D dot com.

David Borey
NBC Nightly News with Tom Yamas, evenings on NBC.
Trey Farrow
Okay, here's what I'll say.
David Borey
Okay, here we go.
Trey Farrow
I'm looking at the full Tyler Perry filmography.
David Borey
Well, okay. And it's worth noting, she only defended Lee Daniels. Yeah, she brought nothing to the table for Tyler. Tyler so far is indefensible for you.
Trey Farrow
Is that true?
Langston Kerman
Why did I get married? I fucked with Abby. I thought that was valid. And 2 and 2 and meh. 2. I said, I don't know if we need this, but I heard they was doing a why? Why did I get married? 3. And that's why Cicely was like and Then she died.
David Borey
Oh.
Langston Kerman
She was like, I'm tired because Tyler said I paid Cicely a million dollars for one day at work. And she was like, wait, why are you telling her about my business?
Trey Farrow
Yeah, that's.
Langston Kerman
Cause he was trying to let her know, hey, you gonna have to work some other days, babe. We got more in the. We got more in the oven for you.
David Borey
That million was in advance.
Langston Kerman
Yeah, yeah.
David Borey
You got work to do.
Langston Kerman
Death Row.
Trey Farrow
We gotta shoot season 40 of Sisters.
David Borey
Woo.
Langston Kerman
We going to hell.
Trey Farrow
Yeah.
David Borey
But Tyler, it's only been out.
Langston Kerman
Ooh, Atlanta. I wish she was back. Yeah.
Trey Farrow
I think that I'll take. Why did I get married? Just in the idea of just a romantic comedy.
David Borey
Yeah.
Trey Farrow
I don't think it detracts anything from art or the conversation or anything like that.
David Borey
Okay.
Trey Farrow
Cause I do think that when we're talking about him as a whole and his output, I don't think it needs to be. He doesn't have to be a 24 to be worthy of existing in the space. You know what I mean?
David Borey
Yeah. I think that's always been my issue with it. Right. Is it's not that I'm expecting him to be.
Trey Farrow
And worthy isn't even the right word. I just mean, like, it doesn't have to be that stylized.
David Borey
But I guess that's my point, is I don't need it to be some high art. I just need it to hold itself to some standard. Do you know what I mean?
Trey Farrow
That.
David Borey
Like Adam Sandler movies, I don't like all of them. I don't like, honestly, most of them, but every single one of them, I go, oh, Adam really thought this was funny. Do you know what I mean? He really believed in, like, whatever this configuration of funny people and jokes was. And he put it out believing that it was going to serve an audience. Whereas, like, Tyler, I don't think gives a fuck.
Langston Kerman
But it does serve. It does serve an adjuster, though.
Trey Farrow
And I think they're, like, great. And what he does.
David Borey
No, I don't. I don't mean that.
Trey Farrow
Some of the stuff is, like, definitely just put together and rushed out. But some of them, you could tell, it's like he wanted this to be a good film. Right?
Langston Kerman
Like, he wanted to. Yeah, he wanted.
Trey Farrow
And it served his audience.
David Borey
But I'm saying that that's. The violence is to put out the rush shit. Knowing you had more potential for a quality film, even as you see it. Right. Like, even if it's not objectively quality. You knew, like, all right, when I put this out, I stand on that.
Langston Kerman
I believe in that.
David Borey
But what if.
Langston Kerman
What if Tyler Perry is ahead of the curve? And he said, these audiences, they're pretty bad. So what are we spending years trying to pull shit together and caring about throw it out there? They gonna watch it, they're gonna pay the money, they're gonna go, well, if.
Trey Farrow
You look at it that way.
Langston Kerman
And honestly, genius, right?
Trey Farrow
If you look at it that way, he was a trailblazer.
David Borey
Well.
Langston Kerman
It'S just like, comedians right now, stand up comedians, posting clips. You're like, that joke's not done. That needs some tags, whatever. It's like, what are we waiting for? Put it. And sometimes the stuff that's the most unfinished gets the most viral moments.
David Borey
So that's true.
Langston Kerman
Tyler Perry is, uh. Oh, let's go.
Trey Farrow
No, let's go.
David Borey
You wanna stand up while you say this? Let's go.
Trey Farrow
Let's go.
David Borey
Put your hand on your heart. What the fuck is about to happen?
Langston Kerman
I think stand up comedians took a note from Tyler Perry and they said, put it out.
David Borey
But I think that's where I start to go. Like, yeah, but that is a greater destruction of the world, right? Yes. Because I do think the deterioration of art is, like, a fundamental reflection of, like, what's happening in the larger world around us.
Trey Farrow
Ahead of the curve doesn't necessarily mean good still, Right?
David Borey
No, he's an innovator for sure. Like, he really broke ground on some vile, vile shit.
Langston Kerman
No writer's leg.
David Borey
Yeah. And that's so crazy.
Langston Kerman
That's. So now. Now that we are. Yeah. What? We know how it's done. You're like, sir, how much? Tell me what the Vyvanse prescription is.
David Borey
But. But even. Even the idea that you have, like, all these shoots happening constantly on this large property, that you're not doing multiple takes on that you're not even fucking. Like, how do you know?
Langston Kerman
You're not there, Sydney.
David Borey
What are we. What game are we playing?
Langston Kerman
I just wanted to put it out there. I just want to hear a fact.
David Borey
That's the whole point, is that we're not allowed to see it because they're doing crazy shit with these people whose lives that will never come back.
Langston Kerman
These people, black people. Don't just say, these people.
David Borey
These dumb, dumbs trapped in a cave in Atlanta.
Langston Kerman
I can't stand by that, brother. I can't. Now, your hairline is nice. Don't push it back.
David Borey
Alan fucking Payne.
Trey Farrow
Whoa. You don't even mean that.
Langston Kerman
You don't.
Trey Farrow
You don't even mean that.
Langston Kerman
You don't if you love Allen so much, I want you to get his tattoo. Get a tattoo. Alan. Alan Payne. Payne.
David Borey
I just miss him.
Langston Kerman
Okay. He's alive.
David Borey
Is he?
Langston Kerman
Find him on Instagram.
David Borey
Not as far as he's concerned. I bet he got a different Instagram.
Langston Kerman
He said that pain fucked him up.
David Borey
I bet it's alantylerpane.
Langston Kerman
There was a new movie recently. Not recently, but, like earlier this year that Tyler Perry made with Kelly Rowland, Mia Coppola, and I watched it. Yeah, I watched it. Was it terrible? No. Was it amazing? No, but I enjoyed it. I enjoyed it. And that sometimes we just need something that we could put our eyes on, take us out of the moment.
David Borey
But again, I think the point is less that he can't do it. I don't think my suggestion is. Everything he's ever made has been a violent violation. Daddy's little girls. I like. I was like, ah, that's cool. I'm not offended by this. It just is.
Langston Kerman
You just. You want to do things that you want things made that doesn't offend you?
David Borey
No, I'm saying I want there to be. Be a standard of quality so that we're not getting clips of a dude getting punched in the face and spinning a full 360 and saying, Ugh, as he falls down. I'm saying I want the. I want a billionaire who owns literally half of Atlanta to invest in quality wigs, and that not to be part of the conversation. I want to explore the world beyond. Mr. Brown, can they put music on this?
Langston Kerman
I need music, Olivia. Everything that he's saying right now, I.
David Borey
Want a real story that you believe in every time because you have the resources and frankly, you present to us to be this healer of our community. So put the effort in to show us that love every single time.
Langston Kerman
So once you say it said once. All that done is Tyler Langston will be right on that motherfucking lot. That's what he's trying to tell you. He's trying to tell you, get your.
David Borey
Get your money out of the way, buddy. When I run out, I'll come be a slave.
Langston Kerman
Cut. Cut. Got me a part of.
David Borey
I'll slave away. And I'll bring sign up for this stage and her unit with me.
Langston Kerman
This is really. Have just.
Trey Farrow
It's ending. Pro Tyler Perry, which is.
Langston Kerman
That's how you know it's.
David Borey
No, I. I want to be clear. I'm. I could not be more anti Tyler Perry. You two are pro Tyler Perry. For me, I am the exact opposite. I think he's the worst I'm pro.
Langston Kerman
You know, so we should be able to be as messy and ridiculous and unprofessional as everybody else in this business. And we are not. We're not allowed to. And Tyler Perry is doing that. And so therefore, I salute you, brother. But it also is, like, bad because, like you said, there's so many people who are trapped in this circle of Perry production.
David Borey
I just dream of a day when we don't have to hold a. It. Hold ourselves to the standard of the worst white person.
Langston Kerman
I didn't say white. Now you said white.
David Borey
Well, you.
Langston Kerman
It was white. I said the industry.
David Borey
I said.
Langston Kerman
I said the industry. I feel like we are so.
David Borey
You almost said Jewish.
Langston Kerman
What the hell is wrong with you? I did not say that. What I'm saying is we always have to do black excellence. Black excellence. We got to have all the credit. We got to. We've got to go to school for it. We have to be so about this life. And it's just like, that's not how art is made all the time. We didn't go to nyu. We didn't go to Juilliard. So that means that the way we conduct acting and comedy or whatever is not up to standard.
David Borey
No, I think. I'm not suggesting even for a second that there needs to be a standardization of quality. I'm not suggesting that there needs to be a standardization of this industry. But I do think that, like, this breaks down to questions of human decency for me.
Langston Kerman
Human decency.
David Borey
This is not just, oh, I made the best movie I could make. And if you like it, you like it. If you don't, you don't. I've seen plenty of those movies, and we can argue all day about which ones those are, but there's nothing he's putting in on Sisters. Do you know what I'm saying?
Langston Kerman
Oh, yo, when I tell you the BET Bandits is gonna be after you. Oh, brother. I don't wanna be a part. I don't wanna be a party.
David Borey
I get it.
Langston Kerman
Someone make sure you untag.
David Borey
Somebody's gonna be mad.
Langston Kerman
Sisters clan. They are. They will ride at dawn.
David Borey
But that's what I'm saying. I get it. That I'm.
Langston Kerman
The wigs are good on there.
David Borey
I understand that. There is an audience.
Langston Kerman
The fillers, even better.
David Borey
I don't think that he's trying his best on all of these things. And I think we gotta be honest about that.
Trey Farrow
That Dave, I think that. What are we talking about? Is it like a ratios thing? Like, what do you think is good to Bad ratio is.
Langston Kerman
Yeah, tell me. Let us know what you. Right now. Right now. Hold on. What is good for you? Movie right now? Show.
David Borey
No, no, no. That. That feels. That. That's complicating the conversation.
Langston Kerman
Okay. Because you want to. Oh. You want to keep your job.
David Borey
So, yeah. I'm not going to play this nasty.
Langston Kerman
Little game where you try to hold me. I wouldn't mind if I wouldn't do what I did right now. Who am I?
David Borey
That's not the point of this conversation. Good try, sister.
Langston Kerman
I can't even. They won't even send me a script. I can't even hear. Audition for Sisters.
David Borey
I think if we're talking ratio of what I think he offers up good to bad. I think it's 90% bad and 10% good.
Langston Kerman
Let me ask you a question. Did you like Vampire in Brooklyn?
David Borey
I don't think it was a good movie.
Langston Kerman
You don't think it was a good movie?
David Borey
No.
Langston Kerman
What is good?
David Borey
Not that.
Langston Kerman
Why wasn't it good? Eddie Murphy was in it. Angela Bassett was in it. Yeah.
David Borey
Eddie Murphy's in a Fever movie.
Langston Kerman
Alan Payne was in it.
Trey Farrow
That's right.
Langston Kerman
He was in it. Yo, you. Yo, you fake.
David Borey
You think it's a good movie?
Trey Farrow
You fake.
David Borey
Langston. Excuse me? You think it's a good movie?
Langston Kerman
Iconic, legendary.
David Borey
No, no, no, Boo. Boo. I'm not gonna play this game where we swerve around it because a bunch of people we like are in it.
Langston Kerman
Butterscotch behavior.
David Borey
Boo.
Langston Kerman
I'm not a part of it. Because it's like, what?
David Borey
Get off the stage.
Langston Kerman
I loved it. I loved it.
David Borey
There's a lot of movies.
Langston Kerman
True Blend Context also was sponsoring that movie.
Trey Farrow
It's crazy, but it's not a great movie.
David Borey
Thank you.
Trey Farrow
And that's fine.
David Borey
That's okay.
Trey Farrow
I think that's kind of how it is with the Tyler Perry stuff. Ass is good.
Langston Kerman
Evil good. Will you get some evil ass? Woo. What's in this coffee?
David Borey
Feeling good Meth. This is meth like behavior. This whole episode has been brought to you by meth.
Langston Kerman
How dare you? How dare you text me an hour before the podcast and I brought my sisterly love here to save the pod. And now you said, I'm on meth, brother. Where is the Calaber brothers?
David Borey
It is he already. He has that. It literally exists.
Trey Farrow
Covered both sides.
Langston Kerman
No.
David Borey
Right? That's the problem. You don't even know how thorough this man is. There's an auntie.
Langston Kerman
I'm hurting.
David Borey
I'm hurting.
Langston Kerman
I'm hurting.
David Borey
You have to stop this man made all the stuff.
Trey Farrow
And you out here being like, it's hard.
David Borey
It could be subjective. No, stop.
Trey Farrow
Here it is. Him being the devil, to me, does come down to more than content or anything. I think it's the way that he runs the ship that is the thing that I think that regardless of whether or not you enjoy it or you don't enjoy it, that is the sinister thread that we can all agree on.
David Borey
Right?
Trey Farrow
That's the problem with Tyler.
David Borey
He's saving insane amounts of money to hoard for himself by not paying people what they're worth and not unionizing. And more than that, he then even saves more and more money by forcing people to work hours that are far beyond reason to stay sort of, like, insular inside of this fucking dome that's built.
Langston Kerman
Bring us home.
David Borey
It feels like we would be irresponsible to walk away from this episode and say that Tyler Perry is, like, a good guy.
Langston Kerman
I just want to say if we. If Dave Langston and me die, we did not commit suicide 100%.
David Borey
I just want to say that right now.
Trey Farrow
We did not.
Langston Kerman
We did not kill ourselves. We did on this podcast.
David Borey
Wait a minute. If they find my body on Tyler Perry Studios, I did kill myself. Anywhere else.
Langston Kerman
How has this show not been shut down?
Trey Farrow
I don't even know. I don't think anybody's paying attention, to be completely honest.
Langston Kerman
Nobody is listening.
Trey Farrow
We really get to go over here.
Langston Kerman
It's going crazy over here.
Trey Farrow
Going crazy.
David Borey
They just say it.
Langston Kerman
Iheart supports this.
Trey Farrow
No.
David Borey
No. They've never listened to a single episode. Mr. James Iheart has never plugged in the old headphones. Well, I think we did it. I think we've concluded all our positions on Tyler Perry, and they do seem vast and a little diverse. We have varying sort of scales of what we consider to be evil about him. Is that.
Langston Kerman
Yeah. It's just crazy that we said all this stuff and it's like, we in this industry. Do we want to work?
David Borey
Yeah, I got a good feeling. I'll be okay.
Langston Kerman
Well, I mean, our good brother over here, English teacher, Abbott. I mean, you Living lights.
David Borey
You was on Abbott before me.
Langston Kerman
Light skin before me. Talky, sweet. I don't know what we going. All right. Hey, hey.
Trey Farrow
Don't worry about me, baby.
David Borey
Yeah, yeah.
Trey Farrow
I got my.
Langston Kerman
Okay, There you go. Leaving a black woman to fend for herself.
Trey Farrow
A Tyler Perry Dylan woman.
David Borey
You holding on his legs as he's trying to leave the house.
Langston Kerman
You know what? I'm ready. Telephone me.
Trey Farrow
Give her a call.
David Borey
Give her a call. Sydney, before you. Before you go on down to the compound, will you tell us. Will you tell us some cool shit you got going on?
Langston Kerman
New brand new podcast. Well, it's remixed, but it's called Mess. It's with me and your fave, Marie Foston on iHeart Big Money Players Network. And we just came out, and I'm very excited to be a part of the family. And obviously I'm on Instagram. Please follow me. In order for me to get the promo and the brand deals that I deserve, I need more followers. So follow me.
David Borey
I think that's fair.
