Few psychiatrists have ventured beyond the confines of Western clinical thinking. Dr. Ralph Allison was one of the rare exceptions. While treating patients diagnosed with multiple personality disorder, he began to encounter alters that were far more than psychological fragments. These were fully formed, autonomous entities with their own histories, intentions, and, in some cases, violent desires. Some existed to protect. Others sought total control. A few wanted their host dead.
