Hello. Hello, this is Brooke Devard and you're listening to the Naked Beauty Podcast. And if you're here with us on YouTube, you are watching the Naked Beauty Podcast. I am so excited to interview Cami Crawford. Cami is one of the kindest souls. I always run into her at events in LA and she's always so warm. Of course, I've seen her on tv. She was the co host of Catfish for what, six years running. But she is truly such a gem and I know she's going to have so many good beauty tips. I'm excited to get into her story. Cammie is a television host and producer who really does it all. She also hosts her own podcast, Relationship, which is a great podcast. She's a creator, an entrepreneur, a model. She's been in Sports Illustrated three years running now. If you follow Kami on social, you also know she is a political activist and has been advocating all for the past year to vote for your rights. What I really love about Cami more than anything else is she has such a great point of view about things. I'm so excited to chat with her on Naked Beauty. Kami, welcome to Naked Beauty. So excited to chat with you.
Cami Crawford
I'm so happy for our second chat. Technically, yeah, true.
Brooke Devard
We did talk in front of a live studio audience.
Cami Crawford
Yes.
Brooke Devard
That was what, a year ago? Two years ago.
Cami Crawford
So long ago.
Brooke Devard
It feels like I wasn't pregnant. So that's how I measure time.
Cami Crawford
What a beautiful life.
Brooke Devard
I want to go back to the very beginning. Growing up in Maryland.
Cami Crawford
Yes.
Brooke Devard
When you were a little girl, did you feel beautiful?
Cami Crawford
I did, but I also didn't. It's twofold. I grew up in Maryland, in Potomac, and before that I was living in Cleveland, Ohio. That's where I was born. And I was going through a lot of life, things that were out of my control. My biological father left when I was five and so I didn't have a relationship with him or know him. And I think that that affected my self worth in a lot of ways that obviously as a child you don't. You can't put two and two together.
Brooke Devard
Did you think that you did something wrong or.
Cami Crawford
Yeah.
Brooke Devard
Blamed yourself because you're the oldest of five.
Cami Crawford
Six girls. Yeah, six girls. So my parents, my dad who raised me is who I call my dad. He had a daughter and my mom had me when they met and then they had four together.
Brooke Devard
Okay.
Cami Crawford
So there's six of us in total.
Brooke Devard
Okay.
Cami Crawford
But I think between that situation and also being bullied a lot in elementary school, my self Worth was all over the place. My self esteem was not the best.
Brooke Devard
I'm surprised to hear that you were bullied because you give me very much. Popular girl, head of cheerleading squad.
Cami Crawford
And you know what? I was, okay. It's kind of later on in life. Yes, exactly. But like, in elementary and middle school, I was bullied relentlessly, like, about everything. And I also just had a different personality back then because I was so, you know, kids are just cruel and like, you don't know what somebody's going through at home and how they're feeling. And I was having all these big emotions that I couldn't really place anywhere. And then to go to school and be, you know, bullied by my classmates, boys and girls, it was like I was getting it from all over the place. And it wasn't until I went into high school where I was like, I'm rebranding.
Brooke Devard
We're switching this whole narrative up.
Cami Crawford
We're switching this whole narrative up. Like, you are not going to play with me and my self esteem. I decide how I feel. I'm going to dictate what I think is beautiful about myself. I'm not going to let other people, adults, children, tell me how I should think about myself. I decide how I think about myself. And then from then on, it's just been a. A whirlwind ever since.
Brooke Devard
Good for you.
Cami Crawford
Never looked back.
Brooke Devard
Now, what were your early experiments with beauty and style? Like what, what were you giving in, like, eighth grade? Ninth grade.
Cami Crawford
Oh, a lot of eyeliner. Heavy, Heavy.
Brooke Devard
Matthew eyeliner.
Cami Crawford
Black. As black as it could be.
Brooke Devard
Like raccoons.
Cami Crawford
Oh, my God. And it was just the lower eyeliner. Like, I wasn't giving top liner.
Brooke Devard
Right.
Cami Crawford
So it was just like heavy, heavy, heavy. I don't even know if I was really wearing mascara back then until, like, the Maybelline. You know, the Maybelline with the pink and the green. Classic, classic. But I don't even think I was giving that. I think I was just giving bottom.
Brooke Devard
Eyeliner and nothing else.
Cami Crawford
And like, lip smackers.
Brooke Devard
Right? That was a vibe then, though.
Cami Crawford
Yeah. But my earliest beauty memory is my mom's frosted gold Mac lipstick in the 90s. She was a frosted gold girl down. And she always looked so flawless with it. I was like, when I grow up, that's. That's what I'm gonna wear.
Brooke Devard
Oh, my gosh. Well, I've never seen your mom, but I know that she's been approached many times to be on Real Housewives of Potomac. So I'm imagining very Fab.
Cami Crawford
Very fab. The most fab that you can. That you could think of. I mean, your mom's very fat, too.
Brooke Devard
Yes. I feel like it creates a high bar to, like, live up to, but it's also very helpful to see someone who's accomplished but also looking consistently good.
Cami Crawford
Exactly. But I'm sure you had the same experience. Like my mom, Even now when I come home, if we're just, like, running to the mall to go get something, I'm the type of person now in my life, if I don't have to get glam, I don't. Of course, if I don't have to get dressed, I don't. But my mom, every single morning, the bus would pick me up at 6:15. She was in full glam at 6:15. Wow. To take me to the bus stop, because she would be like, well, if I have to show up at the school, I'm not going to show up in pajamas. I don't think my mom even owns sweats. I literally don't think she's ever even owned a pair in her life.
Brooke Devard
I love it. That level of glamour is something that I feel like every decade we lose a little bit more of it.
Cami Crawford
I've lost it. I've lost it. Only when I must. Only when I must. But, like, when I go home and, like, she's like, oh, do you want to run to Target? I'm like, yeah, sure. I'll. I'll just grab my purse and let's go. She's like, you don't want to put on a little.
Brooke Devard
A little something?
Cami Crawford
A little block, A little lip?
Brooke Devard
Well, she must have loved you being in pageants.
Cami Crawford
You know what's crazy? Yes. But also, when I told her that I wanted to do a pageant, she was like, why?
Brooke Devard
Oh, interesting. So it wasn't her idea. This was an independent idea you had.
Cami Crawford
Independent? Well, semi independent. My best friend had competed the year before. I did okay. At Miss Maryland Teen usa. And one day we were, like, leaving school, and she was like, this pageant is coming up. I think you would really like it. And I was like, okay. She was like, you could make some cool friends and meet new people. And I. Even though, yes, technically, I was the popular girl, I was always on varsity cheer. I was friends with everyone.
Brooke Devard
How did you know that you were that girl?
Cami Crawford
I was the captain.
Brooke Devard
Yeah. I just. I can feel it. I can feel the energy. It never leaves you. It never leaves you.
Cami Crawford
But I had to. It was the rebranding. It was the rebranding, but I was always I can say this confidently. Kind to everyone. Like, unless you played with me or my friends. I was always kind to everyone. I knew everyone's name in my graduating class. It was 500 students, and I just, like, I liked getting to know new people. So when she suggested this pageant as, like, a way to meet cool friends and, like, it would just be fun, I went home and I told my mom that day, and she was like, I don't understand. She was like, why are we doing that? Like, doesn't that cost a lot of money? Like, if you're gonna be spending that kind of money, we need to return on that investment. My mom's in Aries, so she doesn't play. And Amor, she doesn't play.
Brooke Devard
You just touched on something, though, that I want to go back to about being popular but always being kind to everyone.
Cami Crawford
Yeah.
Brooke Devard
And in la, Hollywood, like, obviously, you meet so many celebrities, and this is what I found. But back me up on this. The more, like, famous, successful people are, the kinder they are.
Cami Crawford
I agree.
Brooke Devard
It's like meanness comes from a place of insecurity. I feel like people that are, like, nasty. They're, like, insecure. There's something deeper going on there. And then people that are really, really successful are always really kind. They greet everyone in the room.
Cami Crawford
Yeah. And they age very gracefully, if you notice that. All the kind people look amazing. Paul Rudd. I don't think there's a wrinkle on that, man. He's so kind.
Brooke Devard
And he's really kind.
Cami Crawford
Everyone says that. He's so kind. Like, I think that there is something to being unproblematic. Like, you just. You age better, you age slower. Pharrell. Stunning. Stunning.
Brooke Devard
Stunning. So nice. One of the nicest people I've ever interviewed.
Cami Crawford
See, this is what I'm saying. Rihanna, gorgeous. Obviously, like, kind people always talk about how kind she is. I think there is absolutely something to that. My mom raised myself and my sisters with the mentality that you treat the janitor with the same respect that you would give the CEO. Everyone is treated equally. Doesn't matter who they are, doesn't matter what they do. Like, my mom always says, you can catch more bees with honey than you can with vinegar.
Brooke Devard
That's a word.
Cami Crawford
I got a lot of vinegar in me. But I also, you know, I'm always leading with kindness. Like, I don't want anyone. I believe that first impressions are everything. Like, I don't need to meet the same person twice to know how I feel about their vibe. I try to give everybody the same first impression of me and like, make it a lasting one. Like, I never want anyone to leave a situation with me and be like, ugh, Kami. Such a bitch. Gorgeous, but such a bitch.
Brooke Devard
No, no, no.
Cami Crawford
I'm a bitch if. When I need to be and to who I need to be when needed. Yes, exactly.
Brooke Devard
So going back to the pageantry. So spoiler alert. You win Ms. Teen USA, fourth black woman ever to do so. Which is.
Cami Crawford
Oh, my God.
Brooke Devard
Yes.
Cami Crawford
I didn't even know that.
Brooke Devard
Yes, you were the fourth. But I would imagine that there's something you have to almost like disassociate a little bit when you are being judged by your physical appearance. I know Miss Teen USA is about more than your physical appearance.
Cami Crawford
Yeah.
Brooke Devard
But it is a beauty contest. Right? So how did that impact your self perception being a beauty contestant?
Cami Crawford
I think, I don't know. Is it privilege to say that? I didn't really think about it that way.
Brooke Devard
That's great.
Cami Crawford
I just really didn't. I thought of it as obviously a new experience. I'm a competitive person. So is my mom. And so she was very clear that, like, we're not just going into this to have fun. But I didn't really think about my beauty being something that was up for debate. I think that is a reflection of my mother and like, how she brought me up. And, you know, I went through that phase of feeling like I was less than and then truly, once I made that switch, I never looked back. You could not tell me that I wasn't that girl. I don't care who you are. Even if I would have lost the pageant, I still felt like I was that girl. Because I have a mother every day who's telling me and my sisters that we are those girls. Not just on the outside, but on the inside. And so I didn't really consider that. What I did consider, though, was color race. Because a black contestant hadn't won in almost 10 years, if not 10 years time. So I did think about that and I thought about my body more because even though I had gotten down to a size 0 to compete at Miss Teen USA, naturally my body is not that of a size 0 woman. Women who are natural size zeros next to me trying to pretend like cosplaying is a size zero look completely different. I have hips, I have boobs. Like, I've always had shape. And so that was something that I considered was like, okay, if you're gonna compete next to these girls, you've gotta fit that mold.
Brooke Devard
So did you diet and restrict and.
Cami Crawford
Definitely dieted, but not a restrictive. Like, it's not like I wasn't eating. I was eating, like, four times a day.
Brooke Devard
Okay.
Cami Crawford
But I was very, like, intentional about my meals. I was prioritizing my protein and, like, no carbs and like, all those, like, nothing fun. Like, a sweet treat was a rice cake.
Brooke Devard
Oh, God.
Cami Crawford
With, like, maybe a little peanut butter on it. Miserable.
Brooke Devard
I'm getting, like, PTSD from when I had gestational diabetes and had to, like, literally measure my food. Treat was like, four blueberries.
Cami Crawford
See?
Brooke Devard
Horrendous.
Cami Crawford
Yeah. And then you're like. But you treasure them. You're like, yeah. Oh, I get to have my nightly blueberry. Like.
Brooke Devard
But you know what's so amazing to me that people voluntarily will. Like, I was on that diet because I had to be because, yes. The strictest, strictest, like, gestational diabetes requirements, then there are lots of people that put themselves through those really tough diets by choice.
Cami Crawford
Yeah. I can't live like that.
Brooke Devard
It's not a good mental space.
Cami Crawford
I can't live like that. I'm going to have a sweet treat if I want it.
Brooke Devard
Right.
Cami Crawford
I'm gonna do what feels good to me.
Brooke Devard
Yes.
Cami Crawford
And you know what? I've. Since that pageant experience, because size scales, they mattered at that point in my life. I've never owned a scale since.
Brooke Devard
Good for you.
Cami Crawford
I don't do. Unless I'm getting measured for a custom dress. I don't subscribe to that. Like, I look at myself in the mirror. If I'm happy, cool. If I'm not, I might book another Pilates class.
Brooke Devard
Yeah.
Cami Crawford
I might go see my trainer. You know, I don't. I. I don't. I can't live my life, like, by my body, because my body has fluctuated my entire life. So if every single time I woke up in the morning and I looked at my body and, like, decided I was going to be depressed about it, I would be. Every day would be a different day.
Brooke Devard
Right. And you realize how many people, their mood and happiness and self perception is dictated by the number on that skill scale. And I think maybe it's because I've had the experience of being 60 pounds heavy. Like, I. I've had such fluctuations with having a baby. Pre. There's like, pre baby, pregnant, post baby. I've realized that looking good really has very little to do with the number on the scale.
Cami Crawford
Yeah.
Brooke Devard
And a lot to do with, like, getting that the right fit, the right outfit.
Cami Crawford
Yes.
Brooke Devard
Feeling together, like.
Cami Crawford
Yeah.
Brooke Devard
Your weight isn't this big determination of like, how good you look. I think people think it is.
Cami Crawford
Right. And I think a lot of people are slaves to that scale. I don' I don't have time for that even. Like. And I'm not saying that I'm immune to it. If I'm at a hotel and there's a scale right there, I might tap my toe on it because it's tempting.
Brooke Devard
It's tempting. Yeah.
Cami Crawford
But it's like, get rid of it. Put it away. Like, that's the first thing I'll do if I'm at a hotel is just like, pick it up, put it in a drawer or something like that. Cause I don't even want the temptation of thinking about that. Cause now it's just ruined my whole trip. Because I feel when I look at myself, I feel great. But then you step on a scale and you see a certain number, and now you don't feel good about yourself.
Brooke Devard
No. No one needs that negativity in their lives.
Cami Crawford
Yeah. We're banning books. We should be banning scales.
Brooke Devard
How do you feel about the rise of Ozempic? It's everywhere. You know, we're here in la.
Cami Crawford
Yeah, it's everywhere.
Brooke Devard
It's everywhere.
Cami Crawford
It's common, I think. I also have friends who are diabetic and, like, I also have friends who have struggled with their weight and have been considered morbidly obese. And, like, it's done wonders for them. I think, though, that it's sad that we have returned to a time when, like, I thought that we were turning a point.
Brooke Devard
Yes. The whole body positivity movement.
Cami Crawford
Yeah.
Brooke Devard
It feels like we came so far in body positivity.
Cami Crawford
Yeah.
Brooke Devard
Now we're regressing.
Cami Crawford
I Like, even when you look at New York Fashion Week, like, where we had all of these gorgeous curve models that were being celebrated this past Fashion Week, there was, like, Paloma only. And, like, that was it. Like, they're. They're. They said d. I roll back. Like, everything back. Like, no more representation. And I think that that is what makes me the most sad, because, like, diets restrictions. Ozempic is just, like, a part of that. That's just like a small piece of a thing that's already been happening. And I'm. I don't know when Ozempic came to be, but, like, I'm pretty sure it's been around for a really long time.
Brooke Devard
I think it became more commonly available in the past two years.
Cami Crawford
Okay. Yeah, probably. Probably. And, like, now it's like, you know, a trending thing. But I.
Brooke Devard
Now anyone can get it.
Cami Crawford
Exactly. Exactly. And I. I don't know. I'm very. I used to skew more body positive, but I think that even that movement has become toxic. And I don't like that either. I think that we should just be able to just be.
Brooke Devard
Yeah. Body neutral.
Cami Crawford
Body neutral, yes. I love body neutrality. I love bodily autonomy.
Brooke Devard
Yes.
Cami Crawford
Do with your body what you feel is best. As long as you're not hurting anyone and you're not causing irreversible damage to yourself. Who am I to you to say or judge? Like, live your life? What I think becomes a little problematic is when people are pushing certain narratives about themselves when we know that that's not how they lost the weight. Like, and not even just losing weight. Like, don't tell me to buy this pushup bra when you know you got your titties done. Like, girl, my titties aren't going to give what those are giving just because I bought the Victoria's Secret Extra Voluptuous.
Brooke Devard
Right, right, right. You know, it's all of the, like, I've just been working out a lot.
Cami Crawford
Yeah.
Brooke Devard
Meals and upping my protein.
Cami Crawford
It's okay.
Brooke Devard
Yeah. And I think that transparency should really be the goal. Like, I don't think there's any shame around using a weight loss drug, but I think what we should be pushing people to do is disclose that.
Cami Crawford
Exactly. Right. Or just don't talk about your weight loss and try to, like, monetize it.
Brooke Devard
Yes.
Cami Crawford
If you're not going to say how it was done.
Brooke Devard
Absolutely. Now, I heard that you wanted to be a dermatologist growing up.
Cami Crawford
I did.
Brooke Devard
What was your relationship with skincare? Did you always have great skin? What's your skincare journey been?
Cami Crawford
My skin has always been very sensitive, and so I tried a lot of things and failed at a lot of things. When I was a teenager and, like, trying new skincare products, I had tried, like, Cetaphil. I had tried proactive. And, like, I didn't have a lot of acne, but, like, those were the products that I saw my friends using and stuff like that. Every time I would break down to a rash, Neutrogena was, like, the only thing that I could use that didn't give me that. So I stuck to that. But it wasn't even so much my own skincare journey as much as it was a girl in my class had psoriasis and it was everywhere. It was on her face. And I just saw the way that people treated her, and I didn't like that. And I was like, I wish that I could, like, take this thing away from her so that people could understand. Like, she was really cool. We had, like, partnered up in class together for different projects, and then she ended up getting it under control. I think she must have went to a dermatologist or an esthetician. And the way that she, like, emerged from her shell after that, I was like, that feeling is what I want to give people. And so then I figured out that, you know, obviously she. She must have went somewhere. And then I was like, oh, a dermatologist. Like, that's what I want to be. I want to give people that feeling. And even though obviously I did not become a dermatologist, did not become a doctor, that's still something that I strive for. I still want to give people that feeling of, like, feeling good about themselves and, like, feeling like they can just be.
Brooke Devard
Yeah, you know what? You do that in your own way. I feel like you are one of the creators that is really for the girls. Like, you're always putting a song to your favor. Favorite lip combos, this new product that you love.
Cami Crawford
Yes.
Brooke Devard
You're always putting us onto tips, and you always look so good. So I want. Oh, my gosh, you really do. I know we're gonna get into, like, what it takes to get pulled together for an event. But before that, what is just, like, your maintenance? Like, what are your, like, baseline things that you were always doing? Because I feel like it's like that stay ready so you don't have to get ready. Approach to glam.
Cami Crawford
I'm really just a girl. I get my nails done every two weeks.
Brooke Devard
Every two weeks. And is it like, Friday at 4:00? I'm like, no, no.
Cami Crawford
But I. I love a Russian manicure. And so I like my nails to look like the polish grew out of my skin.
Brooke Devard
Yes. Like. Like, give some nails to the camera. Let's get into to Cami's nails. This beautiful pale pink.
Cami Crawford
Was this the one that we were talking about?
Brooke Devard
The soap nails?
Cami Crawford
The soap nails, yes.
Brooke Devard
Iridescent Finish. Watch on YouTube.
Cami Crawford
Feel like I'm on QVC.
Brooke Devard
Yes, listen. Watch on YouTube to get into Cammie's beautiful nails. Yes.
Cami Crawford
I. As soon as I see a little bit of space between that cuticle, I'm booking the appointment.
Brooke Devard
You're booking the appointment?
Cami Crawford
I just. I'm a hand talker, obviously, and I need to have my nails done. That's like a non starter for me. Hands and feet.
Brooke Devard
But feet, you can go longer than teeth.
Cami Crawford
I can go longer, but I do get gel pedicures. On my feet because Covid shocked me into reality because I had regular polish on my toes and could not get a proper pedicure, obviously, because there were more important things going on in the world after we were able to be outside.
Brooke Devard
Never again.
Cami Crawford
Never again. I will always have a gel pedi because they last for, like, four weeks, but I have to, like, mentally prepare myself for a pedicure. I don't know about you. I just. I don't know. I just. It gives me anxiety.
Brooke Devard
Okay? Because for me, my anxiety comes from getting my nails done because I feel like I'm in nail jail and I can't use my phone.
Cami Crawford
Yeah.
Brooke Devard
People are calling me. Like, my husband will be all. It's always when I'm getting my nails done, he'll be, like, calling you about something urgent. Not, like, I can't do anything. I'm stuck, like, looking over. What gives you anxiety about pedicures?
Cami Crawford
I get. I don't know. I don't, like, any type of, like, scrub on my legs. Like, my legs are very sensitive. I don't know. Any type of scrub, like, gives me heart palpitations. I don't like it. And then, like, I get the Russian pedicures, too. So, like, just, like, digging in my. Oh, I just, like, think of, like, those commercials with the, like, toe fungus when, like, they lift up the nail. That traumatized me, I think, as a child. Like, the little germ.
Brooke Devard
Yeah, I know.
Cami Crawford
Lifts up the nail and climbs inside. Like, I just. I. I just have to. I. It's like, almost like a Brazilian wax. Like, I have to just prepare.
Brooke Devard
Be in the right head.
Cami Crawford
Yes. And then I get my brows waxed every three to four weeks. I have the same brow girl. I've had the same. I went to her today, actually.
Brooke Devard
You know, I was gonna say, your brows look amazing. Thank you.
Cami Crawford
I've had the same girl for seven years. Same lash girl for seven years. I get my lashes done every two and a half, three weeks because I like them very, very full. Yeah.
Brooke Devard
Your lashes. So, okay, what's the. I just learned about all this lash ma lashes are you doing? And what's. What are the lengths? Like, give us all the details.
Cami Crawford
My girl. Now, like, people go to her and say that they want the cami perfect.
Brooke Devard
Because she have it on the menu.
Cami Crawford
I mean, basically should. Basically, like, she. She does, like, Chloe and Halle's nails. And, like, when they first went to her, they told her that they wanted the same lashes as me.
Brooke Devard
Give me the cami. What's your name? Let's Give her a shout out.
Cami Crawford
Esmeralda.
Brooke Devard
Esmeralda. And what is her. Is she on Instagram?
Cami Crawford
She is, but she's, like, very low key.
Brooke Devard
Okay.
Cami Crawford
She's a star. Lash in la, Starlash in la.
Brooke Devard
Esmerelda, ask for the cami. Okay. Yes.
Cami Crawford
Get a break. Exactly. Exactly. I get d curl.
Brooke Devard
Okay.
Cami Crawford
Volume. Cat eye, 11 through 14.
Brooke Devard
11 through 14.
Cami Crawford
That's my lash map.
Brooke Devard
Okay. And it's. It's heavy. Volume. Do you know how many lashes you have?
Cami Crawford
I mean, no, I think on one. On one piece, it's like five lashes on there.
Brooke Devard
5D, they would say.
Cami Crawford
Exactly. I don't play. I need. I need it. And some people are like, oh, lash blindness. And like, years from now, we're gonna look back. I don't think so.
Brooke Devard
No.
Cami Crawford
I'm very happy with my baby bop lashes.
Brooke Devard
Full lashes are always gorgeous. The reason why I had to stop is because I really, truly, like, felt ugly without lashes. Like, it was giving.
Cami Crawford
And I do. What?
Brooke Devard
But you are prepared to maintain the.
Cami Crawford
Two to three weeks? Yes, I have to. I have to. But I honestly, like, since being bicoastal and being in New York, I found people who are good, but, like, they live really far and, like, it's just a hassle to, like, get to. And so I will fly back to LA to get my beauty maintenance period.
Brooke Devard
You do what you need to do.
Cami Crawford
I do what I need to do. My Botox girl is out here, I guess. Baby Botox.
Brooke Devard
Okay, so baby Botox.
Cami Crawford
Yes. In my forehead, in between my eyes. That's about it.
Brooke Devard
Okay.
Cami Crawford
I don't. Oh. In my masters, So I get 15 to 16 units in my forehead, which is very, very. But I just love that snatched, glossy forehead. Do you get Botox?
Brooke Devard
No, but I've also been.
Cami Crawford
Your face is just all like, girl, bye. Anyway, for the rest of us who don't have the natural glow, Botox does it. I just love how it. It just, like, gives you that stretch. I love seeing that little, like, shiny. Some people wouldn't want their foreheads to be shiny, but there's just something about it.
Brooke Devard
I know what you mean.
Cami Crawford
It's just a nice. It's what you have.
Brooke Devard
And the masseter Botox, a lot of people say that it helps with, like, if you teeth grind. Like, there are benefits beyond the aesthetic tooth.
Cami Crawford
That's why I got it. Genuinely. I was going through a really just, like, anxious time in my life, and I was clenching my jaw so hard at night that when I would wake up, my jaw would hurt. And I talk for A living. So I can't have that.
Brooke Devard
You can't have that.
Cami Crawford
So I just get five units on each side. I believe it's on each side. I don't think it's five total. I think it's five units on each side. And they say that there's, like, some kind of, like, elongating thing that it does to the jaw. I don't really see that big of a difference with that. I also didn't get it for aesthetics. I got it for pain. But if you have, like, tmj, things like that, it's helpful, and it's been a huge relief for me. So I recommend that. And then maintenance things. Esthetician. Like, I get microneedling for my acne scars, actually, to go see her because my skin has been freaking out lately.
Brooke Devard
But that's how often you do microneedling, like, every.
Cami Crawford
I think the last time I got it done was, like, three months ago, and I think the time before that was probably like four to five months before that. So not super, super often. Again, I have sensitive skin, so I have to, like, dial it back.
Brooke Devard
Ease into it. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Now, skincare routine products. Am pm. Take us through. I want to know everything you're using.
Cami Crawford
Oh, when I'm in a state like I am right now, where my skin barrier is in jeopardy.
Brooke Devard
You're in glam a lot.
Cami Crawford
Yeah, exactly.
Brooke Devard
That's the thing. Like, you have to take care of your skin.
Cami Crawford
Yes.
Brooke Devard
Because you know that you're going to be having, you know, being makeup.
Cami Crawford
Exactly. And I was talking about this earlier, but my man, he kisses my face all the time. And men and their beards and, like, any kind of facial hair on sensitive skin is, like. It's the worst thing ever. It's the best thing. Everybody.
Brooke Devard
I was gonna say good problem to have.
Cami Crawford
Exactly. So I'm always just, like, breaking out, but I. So I try to, like, dial back my skincare when I'm dealing with that. Face washes, I kind of, like, go with whatever is just, like, sensitive, clean, easy. There's a Korean brand called Anua that has a nice, like, just clean. Sensitive skin cleanser that's, like, very, very, like, cheap and easy. Vanicare is also one that I like that is, like, cheap and easy. I like Kate Somerville. They have, like, a goat's milk cleanser. Rhode. That pineapple enzyme one. I love Rhode.
Brooke Devard
Yes.
Cami Crawford
I love all of that. Like, the. The milky toner is beautiful. The barrier cream is beautiful.
Brooke Devard
Ron Robinson is the chemist behind. He did a really good job.
Cami Crawford
Yes. And he sent me his skincare, too.
Brooke Devard
Yeah. Beauty stat. Yeah, I'm gonna love it.
Cami Crawford
Yeah, I just got it. I'm like, I can't wait to try it. Because if he did that, I'm like, yeah, I trust you. And he's a black beauty chemist, like, right. Yes, we trust. And then I go in with like, a rice toner I have, and I think it's. Who's it from? Anua.
Brooke Devard
I love all the K beauty in your routine.
Cami Crawford
I love K Beauty. It's been so great. It's just really good for sensitive skin. So I'm very into that. I have, like, my beta gel, like, things from another esthetician. I think it's DMK Skincare. Just like very, very light things. Milky toners.
Brooke Devard
Are you doing any acids? Any retinols?
Cami Crawford
No, I have some retinols, but I honestly like Shannon Darden. Like, her retinol is good for me. Like, she's like a hydrating, plumping.
Brooke Devard
Yes.
Cami Crawford
Serum cream thing that I like. But I am always so afraid to try new stuff like it.
Brooke Devard
Really.
Cami Crawford
I have to. I test everything on my arm for, like, days before I put it on my face, too.
Brooke Devard
We're all supposed to do patch test. I never do it. I go straight to the face.
Cami Crawford
Have to do it because I have broken out in, like, full hives before. And like, trying, like this morning, actually, there was something new. Medicube. I like Medicube. Another K Beauty. But they have a little. It's. They call it like micro needling in a bottle.
Brooke Devard
Yes.
Cami Crawford
Have you tried this yet?
Brooke Devard
Salmon skin?
Cami Crawford
No, not that one. The salmon sperm. One salmon. I don't know if I'm going to go all the way there. I don't know if I'm going to do that. But it's like they say it's like when you put it on your face, it feels like micro needling.
Brooke Devard
Yes.
Cami Crawford
And I was like, oh, I haven't tried this. And like, I was going to try it, and then I was like, I can't do that. I've got to be on camera tomorrow. Like, that would be crazy. So I didn't use it. But yeah. I love K Beauty. I love Rhode. I love. I love a lip mask. Tatcha's lip mask is one of my favorites. Naturium. I also just got that lip mask. I tried it earlier. It's lovely. La Mer, obviously.
Brooke Devard
We love La Mer.
Cami Crawford
Yeah.
Brooke Devard
It's such a. It's so challenging when people ask me, like, is La Mer worth it? Because I'M like, yes and no.
Cami Crawford
Yeah.
Brooke Devard
Right? It's a very luxurious experience. I don't know that my skin has reached a level that it couldn't have reached without it. It just feels nice.
Cami Crawford
Yes. I will give a full disclaimer. They gift me.
Paige
Right?
Brooke Devard
So that helps.
Cami Crawford
I'm not just out here buying $300 cream at Bloomingdale's just, like, for the fun of it. Like, it's been given to me, so I'm using it. And I do love it. Like, but it's, like, one of those special occasion things. Oh, my God. Can I tell you something?
Brooke Devard
Please.
Cami Crawford
I found out that my boyfriend was using my La Mer.
Brooke Devard
Oh. My husband literally has, like, commandeered my La Mer and loves it, by the way. I'm like, can you ease up?
Cami Crawford
And the thing about them is, like, their fingers are so large, and then they just, like, dig their fingers in there and they. They put it on. Like, they don't even know what it is.
Brooke Devard
Right, right. Like, do you appreciate.
Cami Crawford
You don't even know what this is.
Brooke Devard
But does he like it?
Cami Crawford
Of course he likes it. I also love snail mucin.
Brooke Devard
Okay.
Cami Crawford
I've been using that from Cosrx, and he, like, had a special event, and he came to me and he was like, can you do my skin care for my event? And so I did. And I did, like, a full thing. I did the snail Musa, and I, like, had a, like, a fan. Like a very dramatic fan. And he's like, you do this every day. I've never. And I'm like, no, but it's like a special, special occasion.
Brooke Devard
Did you do a little eye cream?
Cami Crawford
Little eye cream? I like the Fenty Beauty Fenty Skin Flash Nap.
Brooke Devard
Okay. I haven't tried it.
Cami Crawford
It's really nice. I like it. It's. It's. I think it has a caffeine in it. Honestly, I. I'm like. I feel like I'm blanking on all of my skincare. There's so much.
Brooke Devard
You give us a lot of stuff. What about, like, lip combo? You know what I bought because of you? The makeup. Forever Brown lip liner.
Cami Crawford
Limitless Brown. I have it in my purse right now. I have so many of them.
Brooke Devard
She is that girl.
Cami Crawford
She is that girl. It's like a perfect. It's a perfect lip liner. I have a few perfect lip liners.
Brooke Devard
What are your perfect lip liners?
Cami Crawford
Mega Forever Limitless Brown. Charlotte Tilbury Foxy Brown.
Brooke Devard
That is such a good one. There's perfect Charlotte Tilbury lip liners in general. The Glide. Incredible. The Foxy Brown. I love. Yes. Love, love.
Cami Crawford
And the good thing about the Mega Forever one, too, is that it's not just a lip liner.
Brooke Devard
You can use it as an eyeliner.
Cami Crawford
Yeah. It's an artist pencil. Technically. Mac Cork.
Brooke Devard
Classic.
Cami Crawford
Classic. That's one of my favorites. Or chestnut.
Brooke Devard
Chestnut.
Cami Crawford
Also go chestnut if you want.
Brooke Devard
Classic.
Cami Crawford
What am I missing? I feel like those are my. Those are my top.
Brooke Devard
You mentioned Rhode. Have you tried their new lip products?
Cami Crawford
I'm not convinced.
Brooke Devard
Okay.
Cami Crawford
I'm not convinced. I love you, Hayley, but that thing is too big. And I'm a lip liner girl.
Brooke Devard
Right, Right.
Cami Crawford
I've had a few comments from people who were like, you need to ease up on the lip liner. It's not the 80s. Guess what?
Brooke Devard
Bye.
Cami Crawford
Just say you're not a bad bitch.
Brooke Devard
Just say that.
Cami Crawford
We don't have to have this conversation. Just say that one thing about me. I'm going to wear my lip liner. It's always the 90s in my house.
Brooke Devard
Right.
Cami Crawford
But no, that, like, thick. I, I, no, I need control. I need. You know, I'm not into that, but I have tried the peptide lips, and I do like those. I know they were having some, like, manufacturing quality issues, but whatever.
Brooke Devard
Have you ever considered doing a product?
Cami Crawford
I have, but it just is a lot of work. I would rather do something, like, with a brand.
Brooke Devard
Yeah. Do a collab.
Cami Crawford
Yeah, do. I would rather do that.
Brooke Devard
Do a lip liner collab with someone.
Cami Crawford
I would.
Brooke Devard
I'm ready.
Cami Crawford
Love that. I'm ready for it, too. I think the people are ready as well, but, like, a little, like, lip kit vibe.
Brooke Devard
We need that from you.
Cami Crawford
Yeah, I would like to do that.
Brooke Devard
I want to talk about showing up at events. Your main character energy. It's a lot of effort. We saw each other last at the Essence. Black women in Hollywood. Yes. But just to simply attend and show up to an event takes a lot.
Cami Crawford
It's not simple.
Brooke Devard
It's not simple. Take us through the process. Take us through everyone that's looped in.
Cami Crawford
Oh, yeah.
Brooke Devard
And also, I'm so curious to hear about your process in terms of, like, defining your style. Right. Because you can have stylists tell you where this, Wear that. You also have your signature cammy look. You have the way that you want to look when you show up on a red carpet.
Cami Crawford
Correct.
Brooke Devard
I want to hear how you've defined that over the years.
Cami Crawford
Yeah.
Brooke Devard
And who you pull in to show up as your best self.
Cami Crawford
Yeah. I think I've been in another rebrand phase of life where I'm like, how do I want to look? Like, how. What do I want to give? What kind of vibe do I want? Because, like, I love to shop, but sometimes, like, my sisters are very strict with me. That's what it's like having little sisters. They're always telling you what to do. They all are my chief brand officers. And so if we're shopping and, like, we've just talked about the fact that I want to do this whole rebrand and, like, this is my new vibe, like, they'll be like, that doesn't fit the brand.
Brooke Devard
It's not on brand, and they're keeping you in line.
Cami Crawford
But it's honestly a good way that anybody can think about shopping. And it's like, is this on brand? Like, is this adding this to my closet? How is this going to push the needle forward with the vibe? I'm trying to get the vibe.
Brooke Devard
And I like what you said about just taking the time to assess and ask yourself, am I showing up in the world how I want to show up? That's something. Whether you are in entertainment or whether you work at a law firm, we can all take a moment to say, like, am I? Especially when you're an adult. Right. I always think about, like, are we using our free will to our best. Am I wearing my hair the way that I wanted to wear it when I was a little girl and I, like, couldn't decide what to do? Yes. Am I dressing the way that I want to dress? Being an adult, having access to everything? Yeah, we can all do that process. So what did you arrive at as your. As the brand that your sisters were keeping you in line?
Cami Crawford
You know, it's an overarching thing. So obviously, I've been a host since I was 19. I'm 32 now, and now I'm moving into the next phase of my life where, like, hosting is still a part of that, but so is just, like, building Cami Crawford as a brand and building my work as a producer, and that's a little bit more serious, you know? So whereas I might have gone to a nightclub event in a little nightclub dress, like, that's actually not where I'm at in my life anymore. I don't want to be wearing a little mesh situation. Like, that's just. I feel like there's other ways to be cool. And I think also being bi coastal again and being back in New York, My vibe in New York is totally different than my vibe in la. And I had to tap back into her. Just a very fierce, tailored version of myself. I Think that's more what we're going for, refinement.
Brooke Devard
Can I say that? I think your vibe is going to be.
Cami Crawford
Oh, my God, yes.
Brooke Devard
I think you're giving early 90s supermodel where.
Cami Crawford
That's it. Yes.
Brooke Devard
Because the focus is on you. The focus is on your gorgeous face, the gorgeous hair. Maybe like an accessory, but it's like, it is like that. Simple, pared back, minimal, elegant. Like, there's nothing too busy. There's nothing competing. There's not like a lot of maximalism. It's just like, simple so that Cami can shine.
Cami Crawford
Thank you. That's all the chief brand officers know, like. Yes, exactly. We're going to package that and we're going to put that out there.
Brooke Devard
It's coming through.
Cami Crawford
Yes, exactly.
Brooke Devard
So when you do have a big event, who do you pull in?
Cami Crawford
Everybody. Getting ready for a big event is a process that happens way before the event takes place. Like, I have an event coming up mid May and Met Gala. No.
Brooke Devard
Okay.
Cami Crawford
God, please. I wish, I wish. It's actually Cannes Film Festival.
Brooke Devard
Okay. Equally major.
Cami Crawford
Major.
Brooke Devard
That red carpet is no joke.
Cami Crawford
This is my first time. It will be my first time.
Brooke Devard
So we've got it. We've got to slay it. Okay, Tell me everything.
Cami Crawford
And I'm going with a brand. I don't know if I can, like, say it yet, but I'm going with a major brand. Okay.
Brooke Devard
We love it.
Cami Crawford
This is a huge red carpet. It is April, what? 9th, 10th? I'm already planning.
Brooke Devard
Already planning.
Cami Crawford
We have to figure out what we're going to wear. Like, who's going to style me? What is the energy? What is the vibe? Looking back at photos from different years, different people who are in my similar space. What did they wear? What? Like, what kind of energy do. Do I want to bring? I still don't even know because I just got invited yesterday. So I'm thinking about it.
Brooke Devard
How am I going to pose on the carpet?
Cami Crawford
How am I going to pose? And, like, once we decide who the stylist is going to be, what the look is going to be, and who's.
Brooke Devard
The we in the we decide. Right.
Cami Crawford
Myself, I have an assistant. I have a management team. I have agents, I have publicists.
Brooke Devard
Okay? And they're all in on this. They're all.
Cami Crawford
I would say more publicist and management.
Brooke Devard
Okay.
Cami Crawford
And then my assistant will coordinate with everybody, along with my publicist, and, like, make sure that glam can be. But. Well, I just thought about that. Who's gonna do my glam in a can? Like, yeah.
Brooke Devard
You know, makeup artists will be out there.
Cami Crawford
Well, thank God. Like, these are things that you have to, like, see who's available, who's gonna be where. Emma just reminds me, like, talking to my assistant on this side, like, we need to find out who's gonna be in Cannes, because I need to make sure that, like, the right people can do my hair, the right people can do my makeup. Because being a black woman, just because there's 50 makeup artists doesn't mean 50 makeup artists can do you, period. So you have to have those things. So. But if I'm doing, like, more of a local event again, days out, weeks out, because people do get booked up at least a week in advance, I try to make sure that my hair and makeup are available. Sometimes if I'm debating on going to an event, if my hair and makeup aren't available, I'm not going.
Brooke Devard
You won't see me there.
Cami Crawford
I can't. I literally can't. And if I don't have the look, and then once you figure out the look, then you have to send the look to hair and makeup and be like, hey, you know my makeup. Kevin and Amber are always amazing, and we'll do whatever I want. My hairstylist, Ray, he decides what my hair is going to be.
Brooke Devard
Okay.
Cami Crawford
So I can come in with an idea, and he will tell me no.
Brooke Devard
And you like what he does, and.
Cami Crawford
I love what he does.
Brooke Devard
Looks great.
Cami Crawford
He's won Emmys for his buns. Not his ass, but, like, the buns that he does on different girls. Like Lori Harvey. He does everybody. Can you see Nash? So I trust his opinion.
Brooke Devard
I think it's so helpful to hear the glam squad and the teams that come together for you to show up looking amazing, because I think some people look at, like, red carpet photos. They're tagging them on Pinterest, and then they're like, oh, I'm gonna do this for, I don't know, my prom. It takes a whole team of people.
Cami Crawford
Yes. And honestly, by the time we're done, because you don't just glam and then, like, step out the door like, you. If the event is at seven, I'm starting glam at three. Because three, four, five, it's usually, like, two hours. Whatever. Now we're ready. Then I want pictures.
Brooke Devard
Of course. You've got to get the content.
Cami Crawford
You got to get the content. You have to have the photographer. You got to have time to make tiktoks that can take, like, 45 minutes to an hour. Now I'm on My way to getting into the car, to get into to the event, God knows, LA traffic, how long that's going to take, that could take an hour. So it's a full day process. By the time my glam team is done with me, I'm ready to go to bed.
Brooke Devard
Right.
Cami Crawford
I'm notorious for getting glam and being like, I wish I could just flee, go to bed.
Brooke Devard
I know that's what they say about the Met Gala. They say that, like, there's so much energy to, like, just get on the carpet and do that, that by the time that people get inside, they're kind of like, yeah, I'm over it.
Cami Crawford
It's almost like getting ready for your wedding every time you go to a big, major red carpet.
Brooke Devard
Wow, that's a good analogy.
Cami Crawford
And I've never had a wedding, but I can only imagine.
Brooke Devard
No, that's such a good analogy. It's a lot.
Cami Crawford
And that's like that.
Brooke Devard
To be picky about what you go to because you can't expend that type of energy.
Cami Crawford
Yes.
Brooke Devard
For everything.
Cami Crawford
And Getty Images, bfa. Those photos are forever. I have so many that haunt me still to this day. From when I was Miss Teen usa, when I was in my Nicki Minaj pink lipstick era, when I didn't have lip liner, when I didn't know anything about concealer, when I didn't have setting powder. People literally think that I've had my entire face done because of how different I looked. But glam really makes a difference.
Brooke Devard
It does. And then I've tried to do the thing where I get away with being like, oh, I can do my own glam for something. And what you can do on your own for, like, day to day, look cute. But when you are on the carpet.
Cami Crawford
Yeah.
Brooke Devard
And the flash hits. It's giving very different. It's a reality.
Cami Crawford
Different is a nice word.
Brooke Devard
It's a real reality check.
Cami Crawford
I have. I think the last red carpets I've been to, I did my own glam. And when I looked at the Gettys, I was not depressed.
Brooke Devard
Okay.
Cami Crawford
So that is a step forward.
Brooke Devard
Yes.
Cami Crawford
But I have also had red carpets where I did my own glam. And I look back at the photos and I'm like, why would I take matters into my own hands for this? Like, right. I just call my people. It's worth the money.
Brooke Devard
We live and we learn. We live and we learn relationships. The. The topic of your incredible podcast.
Cami Crawford
Yes.
Brooke Devard
And you have a man now.
Cami Crawford
Yeah.
Brooke Devard
Who I feel like I'm like, I'm Gonna tell. Let me tell the. Let me tell the audience. Yes, he's very handsome.
Cami Crawford
He's so handsome.
Brooke Devard
Tammy doesn't want to share him with us, and for good reason. Keep your relationship private. But he is a gorgeous man.
Cami Crawford
Thank you. He is. And inside and out, too. He's the most beautiful soul. He takes care of me in ways that I didn't even know that I needed to be taken care of. And because of that, and because it's so special to me, it's not for everybody else to be commenting on, you know? And, like, I share what I want to share. And I think, too, I'm grateful that I have the audience that I have because they respect it. Like, actually, not that long ago, he and I were in New York, and we went to Whole Foods, and we're just, like, you know, shopping around. It actually is not a good day because I was hangry. And he knows, like, you gotta pack a snack for me. Like, I'm like a toddler. Like, I need to have a snack. You can't have me out here shopping for dinner when I'm hungry. So I had. I was being mean to him. I had an attitude. I'm not gonna lie. Nobody knew that, but, like, I was being myself, hangry and rude. And so someone saw us in Whole Foods and took a picture and posted it on Reddit. What? Yeah.
Brooke Devard
You're the second person I've interviewed that has had this awful, like, Reddit stories. What are people doing? It's like, the. Why? Why are people being paparazzi? It's so weird.
Cami Crawford
Well, my thing is, like, I will talk to literally anyone.
Brooke Devard
Right.
Cami Crawford
And I love meeting people out who follow me, so why not come up to me? Like, to take a picture from far away is just, like. Why not just come?
Brooke Devard
That would make me feel so weird.
Cami Crawford
Yeah. And so someone sent it to me on Instagram, and I obviously looked at the thread and the comments. Take this down right now. This is so embarrassing that you would post this. You know that she doesn't post her man. Like, dozens of comments. Yeah. Because he was in it. They were like, this is so disrespectful. She's, like, kept it private for a reason. Like, if you're a real fan of hers, you wouldn't be posting this. And I was like, look at my people. Go. Yes, look at my people. Yeah, so that was. That was really nice to see. But I'm not hiding him. We go out all the time.
Brooke Devard
Like, you just keep it private.
Cami Crawford
I like keeping it private.
Brooke Devard
Well, I feel like, you have. This is, like, a freak occurrence, at least from what I've heard about online dating. You met him. You were on Raya. You met, like, the first day you were on the app.
Cami Crawford
We met my first day on the app.
Brooke Devard
Wow.
Cami Crawford
I had just gotten accepted on the app. I open it up. I was, you know, scrolling, as one does, and he was within, like, my first couple of people. And the crazier part is, is that I saw him out once in la, but I didn't know anything about him. I didn't know his name. I didn't. I had never seen this man before, but when I saw him, I felt something so strong that, like, I couldn't explain until I saw him again on Raya. That was my second time seeing him. I think I might have seen him out at a club once, but I didn't want him to see me in that environment. I'm not meeting my husband in the club. No shade to anyone who has. But I was just like. And I don't even know if it was him, but I feel like it was. But, yeah, I. From what I have heard, Raya has not been successful for anybody.
Brooke Devard
I've heard that everyone gets left. All my girlfriends say they get left on red.
Cami Crawford
Yes.
Brooke Devard
No one responds.
Cami Crawford
Yes. But I think that that's unfortunately, like, the culture of dating right now, and, like, straight men feeling like they need to wait on women to write to them. Like, what are we doing?
Brooke Devard
It's so. Okay, very, very quick story. I was in Austin for South by Southwest. Everyone was on the dance floor at Soho House. Actually, I should say all the girls were on the dance floor at Soho House. And all of the men were just on the sides, like, lurking, staring at the women, staring and, like, talking to themselves on their phones. But I was like. I asked the girls I was with, I was like, do men approach women anymore? And they were like, brooke, no. No. I'm like, see, because I'm not. I don't go out to clubs. I'm not in these environments.
Cami Crawford
Yeah.
Brooke Devard
And haven't been. I. I got married even before apps were a thing. Dating apps didn't even exist. So I was just shocked. I was like, do men not approach women anymore? And they were like, no, babe, no, they don't.
Cami Crawford
They really don't. It's. It's sad. We're losing recipes every single day.
Brooke Devard
It's just insane. Insane to me.
Cami Crawford
Yeah.
Brooke Devard
I was used to. I mean, that's how I met my husband. Right. He, like, came up to me.
Cami Crawford
He introduced himself, like, well, Even my boyfriend and I matched. And literally a couple minutes after matching, he messaged me. And then like an hour into just like messaging back and forth, he was like, hey, can we get on a call? And we talked on the phone for 45 minutes. And then at the end of that call, he was like, what are we doing on the phone? Like, what are you doing tomorrow? Let's go have brunch.
Brooke Devard
Cute.
Cami Crawford
And we went on our first date the next day. Boom, boom, boom.
Brooke Devard
Yeah.
Cami Crawford
No confusion. Like, no. Like a long, drawn out process. But that is the case. I actually took my mom to a club, like, lounge situation after the DNC in Chicago. She came with me and we were out with like the whole team. And there's so many beautiful, smart, incredible women on that team that we were with. And my mom has been off the dating scene for 30 something years. Like, she doesn't know anything about what it's like now, but she's always telling my sisters, like, you guys just need to put yourself out there. You guys just think, yeah, yeah. All this advice, right? From a married woman.
Brooke Devard
Right, Right.
Cami Crawford
Who has no idea what it's like right now. She got a taste of it that night because there were so many single women in our group. And all those guys, same thing. Are looking around like a fishbowl, like, just watching.
Brooke Devard
So weird.
Cami Crawford
And she turns to me and she was like, I am never gonna say anything ever again because this is sad. It's so sad to, like, just watch nothing happen. I know, but they were talking amongst themselves.
Brooke Devard
Amongst themselves.
Cami Crawford
And one of the guys even asked her if one of the girls who was in the group was single.
Brooke Devard
So why not use your two feet and your vocal cords and approach that girl?
Cami Crawford
And that was my mom's response. She was like, yeah, she is. You should go talk to her. Ask me if you ever went to go doctor.
Brooke Devard
He didn't.
Cami Crawford
He didn't. It's almost like they want for you to go tell your friend that they think that you're cute and they asked about you so that you will go to them and say, what?
Brooke Devard
Middle school?
Cami Crawford
Stop. This is not the 8th grade dance.
Brooke Devard
Crazy. So what for people? Because I think a lot of people that are single are thinking, like, what can I do more? But I think a lot of cases, it's not you, it's the larger environment. But I would imagine that in your time being single, you did learn some things about yourself. What advice do you have for people that are single that want to put themselves out there, that want to find love, that want to meet someone, I.
Cami Crawford
Think you need to be very intentional and granular with what kind of love you want to find. Because saying I want a boyfriend doesn't do anything for your manifestation or for like, what it is that you're attracting. Saying, I want a boyfriend who is compassionate, who is generous, who is a leader. Those kinds of things can help you attract what it is that you're looking for. I want a boyfriend. You're going to get any scrub from off the street. So you need to be very clear about what it is that you want and what I like to do. Something that was taught to me by a very wise man, AKA my trainer. He talked to me about the difference between a type versus a preference and how they are very, very different and how you should never sacrifice your type for your preference. A lot of people say that they don't have a type, but you do have a type. Your type is, I want a man who is compassionate, generous and a leader. Your preference is I want a man who's 6, 5, blue eyes, finance, da da da. Like those things are physical, irrelevant qualities that, like, if you were to meet the six five blue eyed finance bro and he's an asshole, you're still gonna let him see the lace on your drawers? No, you're gonna tell him to piss off because he's not even your type. And it honestly makes having like a different level of discernment in dating so much easier. Because when you do come across that guy, you can have fun with him, but you don't have to take him seriously. And if he, quote unquote, breaks your heart, which I don't like to say that anyone could break your heart because, no, just move on. You'll meet somebody new. But if he does something that bothers you or isn't consistent or whatever, you can say, well, he wasn't even my type anyway. And it makes it, it like takes the power back. I think for a lot of women, he wasn't your type. So you didn't really lose anything.
Brooke Devard
That's such a powerful reframing.
Cami Crawford
I love that we have to take the power back because they're obviously not doing anything with theirs. I'm like, what is the patriarchy doing for you? Why? You get to just sit back and relax.
Brooke Devard
What have you learned about yourself since being in a relationship?
Cami Crawford
Ooh, I.
Brooke Devard
And I should say since being in this relationship. Yes, yes, because you've been in other relationships, but this is a very healthy relationship where you feel very seen. So I'm wondering what you've learned about yourself through that experience.
Cami Crawford
I learned that good love, the right love, will show you a lot of things about yourself that you need to work on. Still, I thought that I was healed and good and past, past trauma and like, not even just from past relationships, but like from my biological father. Like, things like aspects of being chosen and like being quote unquote picked. Like, things, things that I thought I was just like already naturally confident about and like all these things. But like being loved properly, I feel like it almost raises more questions because you're even more like, wait, you said, like, you're making me these kinds of promises and like, you love me the right way. So like, what are your real motives? Like, what are you really trying to do? Like, is this really right? And it, it stirred up a lot of things in me that I realized, like, none of this is coming from him or the way that he's. He's treating me exactly how I asked. The list that I made of all the qualities of all the things that are my type, he's doing all those things. So it's my stuff that I have to work on. And that's what it taught me. And I had to call my therapist and my trainer and to be like, hey, like I. I'm struggling with, with these doubtful self doubt and also just like doubtful energy about this person who hasn't shown me anything otherwise. But like, there are triggers and traumas that come up when you're in a good relationship that you might not expect.
Brooke Devard
Yeah. That's so real. And you had to realize that that was coming more from your own history.
Cami Crawford
Yes.
Brooke Devard
And not from anything that he was doing.
Cami Crawford
Yep. And I had to actually say that out loud too. But the best thing about him is that when he had a moment like that, he also said that to me, like, this is not about you. This is my stuff. I'm gonna work on that.
Brooke Devard
Wow. We love self reflection and a man who can understand that there's error in their ways.
Cami Crawford
Yes.
Brooke Devard
And get to the source.
Cami Crawford
Get to the source and fix it. And like, not make it my problem.
Brooke Devard
Yes. Now, do you. You mentioned the skincare. I'm curious how you recharge for self care because I feel like you were always working. You were a busy, busy woman. And also, are there like couples moments where you guys do self care together?
Cami Crawford
You know what? This is the first relationship I've ever been in where when I do have my self care moment or my like, like I'm a true Scorpio. Like, I like to retreat and just like Be silent. And this is the first time that I've ever wanted to like, be silent with someone. So I know that he's the right one for me. So I'm very much like, I will be silent by myself. I. I can nap and like, lock myself in a room for hours, no problem. But I like to do it with him. And so, I mean, our self care things. Like, we just went to a bathhouse recently and like, got a massage.
Brooke Devard
One's really close.
Cami Crawford
It was the one. It was in Williamsburg. Oh, yeah. And it was really nice. We didn't get in any of the pools though. Cause I just don't. I can't. I just. Too much. Too much going on, so. But we love to get a couple's massage. That's something that we like to do. But my kind of like self care, recharge things is literally being silent. Binge watching. We've been watching the Sopranos.
Brooke Devard
Ugh. The best show.
Cami Crawford
I've never seen it until now.
Brooke Devard
My husband and I, we watched every single, you know, from season one all the way till the end.
Cami Crawford
It's incredible.
Brooke Devard
It's incredible.
Cami Crawford
It's incredible. So good. And I'm not like a mob girl.
Brooke Devard
Same.
Cami Crawford
That's not my vibe.
Brooke Devard
I've been like, violence, but I'm not into it. Character. So dynamic. So interesting. Dr. Melfi. I'm so, so good.
Cami Crawford
Carmela. Like, my family, I literally tell them. I'm like, put my family on. Like, I love them. I love them. And so, like, that's what we do. We just like, get takeout and watch the show. Watch the Sopranos.
Brooke Devard
That's as good as it gets.
Cami Crawford
That's as good as it gets. What else do you need? Like, do you want a glass of wine? We both love wine. Like, we'll have some wine, we'll watch Sopranos. That's it. I don't need a lot. I really don't need a lot. I just need silence. I don't know what it's gonna be like when I have kids. You know what?
Brooke Devard
You'll. You'll carve out pockets for yourself.
Cami Crawford
Yeah.
Brooke Devard
Figure it out. You will figure it out. Hopefully. Cammie, we've arrived at my last question, which is when do you feel most beautiful?
Cami Crawford
Oh, I feel like when we had that live podcast, you asked this question.
Brooke Devard
Yes.
Cami Crawford
And I think. Think I answered it the same way that I feel right now, which is when I'm with my sisters. Like, when I'm with my sisters, I feel. Which is shocking because, like, people always think, like, sisters, like, they're just tearing each other apart all the time. And like, yeah, we do that, but it's like in jest. But we also lift each other up in so many ways. Like whenever I'm struggling or having moments of self doubt or imposter syndrome, like, my sisters are always there to tell me that I am who I think I am. And that is something that I feel like only sisters can do. And like best friends. Like, it's girlhood, you know?
Brooke Devard
I love that. Yeah, I love that. Thank you so much, Kimmy, for sharing so much on this episode of Naked Beauty. It's been such a pleasure to go deeper with you. Yeah. And thank you also for spilling all the beauty tea.
Cami Crawford
Oh, yeah, girl, anytime. But then I'm gonna go home and look at my counter, which is so chaotic right now, and be like, oh, I should have talked about this. I should have mentioned this.
Brooke Devard
You gave us a lot. Thank you so much.
Cami Crawford
Of course. Thank you.
