Many people who profess belief in God don’t agree with Christian teaching and don’t think attending church is necessary. But the Bible actually says that those things are necessary for eternal life.

In this sermon text John states that we do have to abide in the truth of Scripture and we have to be a part of the church in order to have eternal life.

Antichrist means contrary to Christ. Now who is contrary to Christ you already perceive from the apostle’s own exposition, and understand that none can go out but antichrists; whereas those who are not contrary to Christ, can in no wise go out. For he that is not contrary to Christ holds fast in His body, and is counted therewith as a member. The members are never contrary one to another. The entire body consists of all the members. -St. Augustine, 5th c.

Having been counted worthy of this Holy Chrism, you are called Christians, verifying the name also by your new birth. For before you were deemed worthy of this grace, you had properly no right to this title, but were advancing on your way towards being Christians. -St. Cyril of Jerusalem, 4th c.

Love does not mean getting along with everyone regardless of what they believe in an exercise of tolerance that ignores truth. Love does not trump truth, but insists that there is a truth apart from which people will perish. –Karen Jobes

Scripture Texts: 1 John 2:18-29 Children, it is the last hour, and as you have heard that antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have come. But they went out, that it might become plain that they all are not of us. 20 But you have been anointed by the Holy One, and you all have knowledge. 21 I write to you, not because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and because no lie is of the truth. 22 Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son. 23 No one who denies the Son has the Father. Whoever confesses the Son has the Father also. 24 Let what you heard from the beginning abide in you. John 15:1-17 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. 7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. 9 As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you.
