Ryan Reynolds
But speaking of the girl whose birthday just passed, this is the girl that put me onto the T app. She put me and Damaris onto the tf.
Damaris
I keep hearing about this T shit.
Ryan Reynolds
So what is this?
Host
A couple months ago, right, I was trying to figure out if a man that I was entertaining was gay or if he was a serial killer.
Damaris
Is that the one you showed me a picture of and I said, yeah, he's gay?
Host
Yes.
Damaris
Okay.
Host
I was trying to figure out if he was gay or a serial killer. Because he was too perfect. Something had to be wrong.
Damaris
Yeah, definitely gay.
Host
So I was. So I was talking to her and she was like, well, have you heard of the tf? I'm like, no. She's like, you know, you go on there and what she painted it to me as. It's like, they'll tell you if, like, a man is in. If he's. If you should stay away from him. Like, if he's a rapist or if he's like, a murderer or a killer or he's creepy. Like, it'll tell you that they would.
Damaris
Know if he was a killer. Yeah, okay. Red Flag is a murderer. Red Flag. He just came home.
Ryan Reynolds
No, for real.
Host
One of the people on there, it's like, he just came home from murdering his wife. He did. He got time served. Like, shit like that. So I'm like, got time served.
Damaris
Okay, yeah, go ahead.
Host
So I'm like. So that's what it was painted to. As painted to me as. So I'm like, okay, this is such a great app. Like, it could warn women against, like, horrible men and stuff like this. Now, over the weekend, it blew up and was like, people were on there, like, yeah, girl, he got a girlfriend. He be cheating on his girlfriend. His dick whack.
Ryan Reynolds
Tamara, slow. Just slow down, cuz. I want you to get there, but don't act like me. And you did not search my name, mall's name.
Host
We did.
Ryan Reynolds
Everybody we knew his name showed us that tf.
Host
You're not on it.
Ryan Reynolds
We are not on that T app whatsoever.
Host
One of our homies is, though.
Ryan Reynolds
Yeah, There was somebody that was on there. I was like, damn, One of our.
Host
Homies is on there.
Ryan Reynolds
Not for, like, doing no, like, foul, rapey shit, but they just say he.
Host
Keeps cheating on his girlfriend. That ain't right.
Damaris
But. Oh, that's. That's man. But go ahead.
Ryan Reynolds
But yes, once this girl introduced Damaris and I to this app, we searched. Peach.
Damaris
I imagine searching.
Host
Josh, we found. We. We didn't find. I'm sorry. We searched for you. We didn't find you. I'm sorry. Yes.
Ryan Reynolds
Did we? Because maybe we should double check.
Damaris
So wait, this app is for just for women all over the world?
Ryan Reynolds
Country?
Host
All over the country?
Ryan Reynolds
No, you can put a zip code, a whole area. Like, she shares her location with that app. So she could just hit her location.
Damaris
Okay. Okay.
Host
People in the area.
Damaris
Gotcha.
Ryan Reynolds
It's like Dick Yelp.
Damaris
Okay.
Ryan Reynolds
More or less.
Host
But it wasn't originally for that. It was.
Ryan Reynolds
It was for the protection of women. I Mean, I don't know if t app will say this, but it same way. Only fans. A lot of attitude with certain women and sex work and things like that to make sure whatever you're doing is safe with the people that you're meeting up with.
Damaris
Got you.
Ryan Reynolds
Okay. So then it spread.
Damaris
Okay.
Ryan Reynolds
And Damaris, you can take it from here after that breach, I just want to make it clear. Yeah, he was squeaking clean on that. And anything after this will 1000% because we talked about it.
Host
Yeah, they. They started just. It stopped becoming about safety and started just becoming about gossip, Quote, unquote, gossip. And so it blew up. Niggas was getting mad. They like, what if we did this for women? Ah, y' all do. It's called group chats. But they were just so. Everybody was so angry because people were, you know, exposing. Like, oh, I went on a date with him and his dick was whack, or he's hairy or his butt stinks. Like, it was just shit. Like.
Damaris
That'S what they own this app talking about.
Host
Yes. And they can give. People can give you red flags or green flags, yada, yada. So, yeah, it spread all over your.
Damaris
Face like there was a huge debt.
Host
Yeah. They put a picture of your face. There was a huge data breach where. So some people, I guess, were uploading their license to. Because when you. When you sign up, you have to verify that they need a record of you being who you are. Right. So, for example, when I signed up a couple months ago to find out if that man was a murderer, I used my photo. I didn't use my id. Some people were using their id. And then there was a data breach. So then all of those people's IDs and selfies became public when the app is actually supposed to delete them the moment they have them. But, you know, the moment you take them or whatever and they verify, but, you know, that doesn't ever work out like that. So huge data breach. Everybody's like, ah, that's what y' all get. Y' all are fucking stupid for signing up to this app. And I'm just like, if the app was being used for what it was originally created for, I understand why an app like that exists, and I'm grateful that an app like that exists. But to make it just about, like, personal, like, stupid shit. It just shit.
Ryan Reynolds
When we were looking on the app with her, all of that shit was legitimately about, like, whether that man was safe or not. Like, it wasn't on somebody whose dick was whack. Or like, it was really about safety. So once that shit. Cause how long ago do you think that was? She showed us that a couple of months ago. Seven years ago.
Damaris
So you know that. Seven.
Ryan Reynolds
No, but it was a couple of months ago.
Host
Top of June.
Ryan Reynolds
It's okay. You can tell the truth on my. I don't care. Unless you trying to.
Damaris
Right before the pandemic.
Host
Top of June. Top of June.
Damaris
Okay.
Ryan Reynolds
Yeah. When we were looking at that, I mean, whatever her settings were, were just for safety. Yeah, because. Because once I saw this shit go off, I was like, oh, that was the app that Shorty showed us.
Damaris
So is there an app like this for guys? Like, so we can know the women.
Ryan Reynolds
We would get arrested if we had an app like that?
Damaris
Why?
Ryan Reynolds
Because double standards exist.
Host
To see if that I.
Ryan Reynolds
That I agree with. Like, that's true.
Host
Rob me.
Ryan Reynolds
Yeah, yeah, but I'm saying men couldn't have that app. We wouldn't have. We would never be allowed to have that app.
Damaris
But that is so crazy. Women do crazy too.
Ryan Reynolds
No, I agree. No, I think men should be able to have their T app. I'm just saying, in this society, we would get smoked for having that app.
Host
I mean, but to be fair, women are. Are getting smoked for having that app right now too, so.
Ryan Reynolds
Well, also, the having the T app. Yeah, the also irony of the entire thing, because I don't really agree with how that app ended up being because it ended up being gossip. But it is kind of funny that a tapp designed to protect women ended up having all of their addresses out there.
Tamara
Jesus.
Ryan Reynolds
Like, that was. That was the irony of the entire thing.
Damaris
Yeah.
Ryan Reynolds
Because all the women that use their IDs, their addresses.
Damaris
Yeah, that's up.
Ryan Reynolds
But it turned into some gossipy, like, listen, Dick Yelp was fucked up, but at least it was called Dick Yelp. We knew what type of time it was. The T app was really started to help and protect women.
Damaris
Yeah. They was wrong for putting me on that app. That was crazy.
Ryan Reynolds
They said incredible things about you.
Damaris
That was crazy.
Ryan Reynolds
Do you remember the things they said about me? No, it's up. They put me on. I said I used the hard er and tried to do slave cosplay with her. No. Oh, it's up that everyone found out that you have a huge dick and you're a great lover. Oh, God. Oh, my God. How did. Oh, you poor guy. They said that I do slave cosplay and the only way I can is if I use the hard er when I'm you poor gentleman. I'm so sorry that that happened.
Damaris
I forgot they said that about you, Roy. Damn. Am I.
Ryan Reynolds
That's the only thing on Dicky up ahead.
Damaris
Yo. Damn. My bad, bro. I forgot about that.
Host
How do you do slave cosplay exactly. Rory.
Ryan Reynolds
Cuz I'm a history book.
Damaris
He dresses up like Leonardo DiCaprio. Django.
Ryan Reynolds
Really into history. And she didn't realize that if we continued on with it, everyone was gonna be free.
Damaris
Everybody. She didn't let the story go on long enough.
Host
All right.
Tamara
Please.
Damaris
It starts out bad, but it ends in a beautiful. It ends with Juneteenth.
Host
Yeah. All right, all right. Okay.
Damaris
It ends on Juneteenth.
Ryan Reynolds
Because all that y' all not about to tell on Dick Young. It's okay if somebody makes up some shit that I'm doing. Slave cosplaying. It's a RDR now I can't talk about this.
Damaris
It ends on Juneteenth. That's where it ends. On Juneteenth is when the story.
Ryan Reynolds
Sounds you some real historical.
Damaris
Yeah, no. They didn't see your vision, man. They didn't see your vision.
Ryan Reynolds
Oh my God.
Damaris
Holy. That's hilarious.
Ryan Reynolds
All right, is there anything before we do get to voicemails, Is there anything we need to cover here?
Host
Anything musical?
Ryan Reynolds
Oh, Destiny's Child reunion?
Host
I don't want to talk about it.
Damaris
Why?
Ryan Reynolds
I kind of don't either, man.
Damaris
Why?
Ryan Reynolds
Because I would have. I would have spent my last dollar to fly to Vegas to go see that shit.
Host
I would for that.
Ryan Reynolds
Add me to the ti. What you need from me.
Host
What's funny?
Damaris
Said I would have so. You would have so cat for them tickets right there.
Ryan Reynolds
After we left recording on Thursday. Which. The episode came out on Friday. Listen, man. Number nine.
Damaris
And what are we. Oh yeah, I'm. Listen, bro, I'm telling you today I.
Ryan Reynolds
Enjoy your like actual genuine reaction.
Damaris
Yeah. Like no. Today, no.
Ryan Reynolds
It's actually like a pretty big deal. And mall's just like not forgot.
Damaris
I totally forgot it. I didn't know. Yeah. What the hell y' all were clapping at. But okay. Got it. Now I'm on board. Got it.
Ryan Reynolds
I was extremely late to pick my daughter up from daycare on Thursday. I ran out of here and then my phone started buzzing while I was waiting for my car at the garage. So I called Peach. I said that complex list came out. How did they slight us? That was my. My exact thing. Cuz I'm pessimistic.
Damaris
I just assumed with the worst.
Ryan Reynolds
We already knew what time it was. We appreciated 13 last year. That's when we made our amends with Complex. That's kept saying, greatest platform. Greatest platform I've ever seen in my entire. When we were 13, I was like.
Damaris
Is there anyone greater than Complex?
Ryan Reynolds
No, I don't agree that my album shouldn't have been on the top. Now you put us at 13 here. Like, oh, everything's cool. Black ball.
Damaris
What?
Ryan Reynolds
I got white balls.
Damaris
Yeah.
Ryan Reynolds
So I didn't even care, but I just felt like I had this feeling in my stomach that Karisha was going to be number one this year.
Host
Let it go.
Damaris
Let it go. It's okay.
Ryan Reynolds
Why is it that I. I wanted to see where Karisha was before we were like, tell me where Karisha. Don't tell me where New Royal Mo is at.
Host
She didn't even have any episodes this year.
Ryan Reynolds
I know she'd be number one.
Damaris
That's why he wanted to know.
Ryan Reynolds
I was like, oh, the Puffchild are gonna be like, yo. Just her influence. Being quiet was the number one thing, so I assumed that she was number one. But she was not on the list. We ended up being at number nine. Congrats to everybody in here. Josh, Page, Demaris, the whole entire crew. Volume. Thank you for everything that you guys do. We made it to number nine, man.
Damaris
Yeah, man.
Ryan Reynolds
Top ten.
Damaris
Thank you. The Complex for the, you know, the write up. Once again. What's our guy's name?
Host
Jordan. Jordan.
Damaris
Did I write up Jordan? Thank you. Jordan. Jordan, though. But please don't ever refer to me as the Drake whisperer again in your life. That's all. Thank you for lovely, lovely. Other. Everything other than that. Thank you. It was something else he said. And I was like, wait, what?
Ryan Reynolds
Oh, let's pull it up.
Damaris
Some things, some words that Jordan had in there. I was like, yo, wait, hold up.
Ryan Reynolds
Look at what happens even when you make top 10 of a list that you still have gripes.
Damaris
No, no, no. Just. It was just some of the word.
Ryan Reynolds
Will never make us whole.
Damaris
It was some of the wording that I just didn't like. That's all. Just some of the wording. Yeah. Rory and Mall are on the rise. After debuting on this last year, they've cut into the top ten. On the rise.
Ryan Reynolds
On the rise already.
Damaris
Thanks to the fact. Thanks to the fact that their platform has become more than just a place to react to music. It's now making news of its own. Ovo Mall has leaned into his connections, emerging as something of a. Something of a. I'm nothing of a Drake whisperer.
Ryan Reynolds
And by the way, you can't Quote yourself.
Damaris
I can't.
Ryan Reynolds
No, I'm saying like who called you the Drake Whisperer?
Damaris
He did. He's the only one. When he dropped that Drake had a bomb on Iceman, Internet went into a frenzy. He later clarified that it wasn't another dis, just that there was a hit coming. To their credit, Rory and Ma are in on the jokes and they find ways to have fun with their reputation. On the one year anniversary of the Kendrick vs Drake, Beef Mall went head to head with west coast counterpart DJ Head. I like how he did that. And a first take style debate with Rory and Damaris got in discussion was one of the most entertaining podcast episode of year. You may not agree with all it takes and maybe yes, mall takes the OV glazing. That's what I didn't like.
Ryan Reynolds
I knew we were gonna get some. So far, Jordan saying nice things.
Damaris
Great, great things.
Ryan Reynolds
I was like, what is mom at?
Damaris
Beautiful. Jordan Rose, beautiful write up. Other than that, a little too far, but props for the duo for consistently finding new and creative ways to stay entertaining. Jordan Rose and everyone at Complex. Thank you.
Ryan Reynolds
Yeah, thank you, Jordan. I think that was great. I don't know, man. As much as like I do appreciate this type of shit, lists like don't.
Damaris
Mean that much to you or in.
Ryan Reynolds
General, they don't validate anything per se. Like I think the list they put together is, is cool and fair. But there was plenty of people that were left off that list that I felt should be on there that like as it was cool, like I appreciate people even hitting me up like, yo, number nine is big. Like even if you don't care about list, that's, that's big. Top, top 10 hip hop media. That means something grateful. Appreciate it. And it's great for when you have a partner like volume. They like to see that. People like to see that type of stuff. But going through the list, my biggest gripe last year was that Bootleg Kev was not higher. He went lower this year. And I feel like Bootleg Kev has been smoking shit.
Damaris
I honestly, to be fair, I didn't look at Peach. I think I was here with Peach and he had pulled up the power rankings. And once he showed me where we landed, I really didn't look at the rest of the list, honestly. So I don't know who landed where, who is or isn't on the list. But either way, you know, lists are, are cool and you know, it kind of puts things into, you know, perspective somewhat compartmentalized and you know, it's it's good to have conversations and things like that. But anybody that didn't make the list, you know, don't feel bad that you didn't. Don't think that you're not doing the work or not doing good work because you didn't make the list.
Ryan Reynolds
We've been left off it when I knew we should have been on it.
Damaris
Yeah, it. It happens, man, it happens.
Ryan Reynolds
But that doesn't mean as counterparts, we can't bring up those type of people. Like, I feel Bag Fuel has been smoking shit.
Damaris
Shout out to Bag Fuel.
Ryan Reynolds
If you're talking about people, that is hip hop media, right? And I think they covered a lot of bases. I think streamers. That's still hip hop media. And we'll get to the Kai thing after this. But what Bag Fuel has been doing under what they said as their definition in the article, how are they not in a top 25 of everything bag Fuel has been doing? Gina not being on that list is fucking crazy to me.
Damaris
But her and Head show, it's both of them though, correct? Yeah, but so what did. Did Head made the list? I'm sure.
Ryan Reynolds
Yeah, he did.
Damaris
So why weren't the both of them?
Ryan Reynolds
But then also Elliott made it. And here's my thing. I think Jeremy should have been on this list because everything Jeremy has done outside of Head Elliott and his show, he's been smoking shit on the solo side, I feel like more than anyone on that show, there's Jeremy clips every single week of what he's doing on his own. I think Jeremy should have been on that list.
Damaris
I think it was the bars on the i85 that kind of.
Ryan Reynolds
First of all, it was just incredible show.
Damaris
Oh, it wasn't bars on i85. Oh, sorry.
Ryan Reynolds
First of all, if Jeremy drove to Connecticut to get them bars off, if.
Damaris
He left la, I thought it was because Jeremy was on just incredible that they kind of kept him off the list. They wasn't feeling as good bars.
Ryan Reynolds
I mean, I just feel by their standards, everything he's been doing, he should have been there.
Damaris
Yeah, I think that, you know, again, these lists are cool and, and we're grateful. Thank you to Complex. But to anybody that didn't make it or people feel like they should be ranked higher, whatever, whatever. Listen, man, everybody just continue doing good work. Good work in the space. Good work for hip hop. I think at some point or another, we all need and feed off of each other in this space, you know, whether it's competitive, whether it's, you know, because we don't like each other. Whether it's because we don't think that, you know, this person's work is good or whatever. Whatever. So you want to kind of work harder so you can kind of get these people out the way, whatever it may be. Let's just continue to keep doing good work and keep putting hip hop first in this space that we're in. Cause that's really what matters at the end of the day.
Ryan Reynolds
I agree with you and I love all that positivity, but nah, I'm here for a messy mood.
Damaris
Are you? Are you? Oh, okay, Go ahead, get messy.
Ryan Reynolds
Well, no, I'll start with positivity. Black Boy Max at number four. I can make a case that he should be higher. I love everything Black Boy's been doing his in his entire series of in the booth of like actually having rappers come in there and make music in real time on stream. That to me is the definition of. Of hip hop media and not streaming gossip. If we're doing hip hop media, you could make a case that Pl Boy Max is one or two in that regard. If we're talking about hip hop media.
Damaris
Yeah.
Ryan Reynolds
Everything that we're doing here is for hip hop. I think he should be higher. He wasn't even on it last year, but I guess that just speaks to the year that he's had. He went from not on the list at all to number four. So I agree with that. The Kai thing is what I saw stirred up a lot of conversation. Does Kai belong number one on a. A streamer list? I don't think there's anything to debate there. Numbers are real. Is Kai hip hop media?
Damaris
He's from the Bronx. That's hip hop. So is Ralph Lauren at Polo's Hip Hop. I mean, Kyle, but you know, he has, he has his things, his moments, his hip hop moments. That's not his focus. So I can see why people may feel away at him being number one.
Ryan Reynolds
Based off the standards that Complex did give in the beginning. Again of the article. I totally understand why Kai would be there under those circumstances of launching rollouts, of having moments within hip hop. Yes. I just don't know if Kai would be deemed a hip hop like streamer. Yes, he has those moments and they go far greater than anything that we've ever done, numbers wise. But is that Kai, like, do people go to Kai for hip hop?
Host
I don't think.
Damaris
I think the audience does. I think. I think there's some people that may go to him for hip hop? Absolutely.
Ryan Reynolds
I think he does an incredible job of Taking in hip hop to the new generation and how the young kids consume media, for sure. And making hip hop part of his world. But I mean, this isn't hate. It's actually quite the opposite. I just don't think Kai, if we're media power players, I think Kai should be up there on a rogan list when you're coming to that type of thing. But I don't know if. If Kai really came in or ever focused on it being a hip hop platform. I mean, like the moments here, we love to see Offset dance with him in the basement and like all that. Yeah, this is great. Is that a hip hop platform just because Offset happens to be a rapper?
Damaris
No, but that's what I'm saying. He's not just hip hop. He has a lot of some big hip hop moments. You know, he listens to music on the stream when. When albums drop, when songs drop. So, I mean, yeah, I'm not mad at Kai being number one, man.
Ryan Reynolds
I'm fine with him. Yeah, I fucking. I love everything that Kai is doing.
Damaris
And then what is hip hop media like? Of course, hip hop media.
Ryan Reynolds
My next question, it changes.
Damaris
Yes, it changes. It's not the. The, you know, the Word up magazine, and it's not that type of thing. And it's not just the source magazine type of hip hop media style anymore. Things have changed. Things are. Digital streaming is such a huge part of our culture right now and the way people receive music. So I think this is on brand for Kai to be number one. I'm not. I'm not mad at that. And I didn't know he was number one until, I think just now, until y' all just told me that I seriously did not look at the rest of this list. Like, I don't know who is what and where. Where they landed.
Ryan Reynolds
Yeah. And I mean, I guess based off their criteria is. Is to your point, the question I want to ask, what is hip hop media? Because there should never be a world where my name is above Big Boy's name in hip hop media power players ever. But if it's off the criteria of what is actually just happening right now and how people are finding new ways to revamp how people consume things, then I get it. But putting this together is going to offend somebody.
Damaris
Yeah, somebody's gonna be offended, just like I was offended. But thank you, Jordan Rose. Appreciate that. What, man?
Host
When Jordan hit me up for a picture and I'm like, what, man? What we do now? And he was like, it's for the hip hop how I rank his list.
Ryan Reynolds
You didn't even tell us that. How? I found out on my way to daycare.
Host
Why would I tell y' all that? But I didn't know what number we were. He didn't tell me what number we were. He just said that he was doing the list, so why would I? I mean, I knew we eventually were gonna find out what number we were. I wasn't gonna ask him what number we were. Um, so I sent him pictures. Yo, Jordan, I sent you two pictures, man. One of them had me in it. Yo.
Ryan Reynolds
Trying to figure out why the fuck.
Host
You went with the one with just Rory him off.
Ryan Reynolds
I said in the post. I. I feel like you should have been right there.
Host
No, you don't have to. That's fine.
Damaris
It's okay.
Host
I appreciate that, but you don't have to do that.
Damaris
No worry.
Host
And now.
Damaris
All right, Baby D. What's up with your girl Ari?
Host
Man, what I do? What she do?

Damaris
Oh my God.
Host
I seen the discourse.
Ryan Reynolds
The discourse.
Host
I seen the discourse that she kind of. Are you talking about Ari Lennox in reference to saying that the jokes about Pam were anti black?
Damaris
Yes.
Host
Okay. I don't think that she's being overly sensitive. She's not the first person to ever say that. That's like been a running like thing. That the reason why in. In a lot of shows back in those days and some shows now that the sidekick is always a dark skinned woman and she catches a lot of jokes. Do I think that people always found Pam to be fine? Yes.
Damaris
But DVD news flash. Martin joked on everybody on that show.
Host
For sure. For sure.
Damaris
Even his own. Even his own girlfriend, for sure. What are we talking about?
Host
But she's not. But what I'm saying is I don't wanna make that a ahri thing. Cause she's not the first person to ever bring that up.
Damaris
Okay. But she's the loudest person to bring it up.
Host
Okay. Well some people think that there are colorism conversations and little undersided jokes of like the side the sidekick, the light skinned girl with the black sidekick and the light sidekick.
Damaris
Does colorism exist in television, film, Hollywood? Absolute. Was Martin being a colorist towards Pam? He never mentioned her complexion one time on that show as a joke. It was always her hair. It was always referring to her as being manly. Can't find a man. Okay, so it was never because you're dark skinned.
Host
Okay, so those are all. Those are all stereotypes that are used with dark skinned women being masculine, not being able to keep a man and being nappy headed. Those are anti black tropes that are attributed to black to dark skinned black women.
Damaris
He used to talk about Gina's kitchen too and say her head was big.
Host
He said her head was. Because that's a Trope against light skinned women. Light skinned women got big ass heads. That's a, that's a trope against light skinned women. That they got big foreheads. So, so everything that, the moment you started naming those things, those are all anti black women, anti dark skinned women sentiment. So he doesn't have to mention her color, but those are all things that society has attributed to dark skinned women. Are you seeing what I'm saying? So I do get that everybody knew Pam was fine. Like everybody. Well, if you knew, you knew. But back in those days, light skinned women were heralded as the, the thing. Like you need the light skinned wife or the light skinned girlfriend and then you got the dark skinned side chick. And I'm gonna call her nappy headed manly and say she can't keep a man. She's not pulling that out of her ass. Like, that's not something she pulled out of her ass. She's not the first person to say that. I can see both sides.
Damaris
What was the complexion of miss Claire Huxtable on the Cosby Show?
Host
She was brown skinned, but that's also.
Damaris
What was the complexion of Fancy on Jamie Foxx?
Host
Well, first of all, she, Claire Huxtable is my color. She, she barely. She barely brown. It's that barely brown.
Damaris
Tashina Arnold is your complexion.
Host
No, she's not. Tashina's a little darker.
Damaris
Tashina Arnold is your complexion.
Host
She's a little bit darker than me.
Damaris
Tashina Arnold is your complexion.
Host
Okay, we can agree to disagree. I might be wrong, but.
Damaris
Yeah, what I'm saying is brown skinned women. The first mom in Fresh Prince was a brown skinned woman.
Host
And they got rid of her and got and replaced it with a light skinned woman.
Damaris
That was the big thing, which was the craziest move. But I'm saying the original character was casted as a brown skinned black woman. I'm just again, this victim mentality thing, we gotta move past it. Because if we just look at the landscape, black women, brown skinned women have been represented on every level for years. They have. Now you can point out instances where maybe. And that's cool, but it's like, okay, but maybe just this actress was better than the brown skinned actress and that's why she was casted here.
Host
Or that's not what happened with Fresh Prince and they all came out.
Damaris
I'm not saying, I'm not talking about Fresh Prince specific. I'm just saying the original mom in Fresh Prince was casted as a brown skinned black woman. Correct. So again, when they made the Change. Of course. It was weird. We all recognized that. That was crazy. It was like y' all couldn't even go cast another brown, like a brown skinned, darker skinned woman. Like y' all got a lighter skinned woman like to not even try to like, you know, kind of fool us a little bit. Y' all just completely just made a shit. Okay, cool. But what I'm saying is brown skinned women have always been represented in television. When you go back to good times, all of these shows like, so my thing is, how do we get to a first of all, comedy number one where jokes is going to be cracked. That's number one. Martin who's. It's not like Martin is a white man playing this role and he's cracking on his wife's best friend who's a brown skinned woman. He's a black man, but he's cracking on everybody.
Host
Yes.
Damaris
All of his friends got it. They all. Anytime they walk through the door, it's jokes. We can't turn this into. Yo, this was. It made me feel away. And we all laughed. We all still laugh. Nobody. Have you ever wanted you. I'm just talking about you. Nevermind what the Internet is saying. Have you ever once watched Martin and felt like what he said to Pam was inappropriate?
Host
Not as far as being inappropriate, no. But I'm very aware of tropes against black women.
Damaris
But in We All Are, I'm talking about this specific Martin, the show with Martin and Pam's character and Pam's Tasina Arnold's character.
Tamara
Pam.
Damaris
Did you ever watch that and feel like yo, he kind of going crazy on Pam?
Host
No.
Damaris
And it's only because she dark skinned.
Host
It's not about that. It's about he would the things that he said to Pam even if he wasn't in a. If the actresses were switched and Gina was somehow the best friend or that Gina had another light skinned best friend, the jokes would not have been that they were manly, can't keep a man and nappy headed. Those would not have been the jokes. They would have still got joked on. But those wouldn't have been a joke jokes.
Damaris
But he's made nappy headed jokes about Gina before.
Host
He might have said something about like, oh, like you need to straighten your hair or something. Like there's something like that. But even that in itself is anti black. Just because he's saying it to a light skinned woman is still anti black woman. Like making comments about black women's hair is anti black. Now I'm not vilifying Martin because we are Much more aware of these things these days. But just because nobody was talking about it back then doesn't mean that people can't look back and peep it. We look back on old TV shows all the time and peep shit that was like, that was a little crazy. Doesn't mean anybody deserves to be canceled or anything like that. No, but Ari just came out and said that she felt some type of way about that because those are anti black women tropes. There's nothing manly.
Damaris
It makes sense if that's coming from somebody who's not a black man who we know loves black women.
Host
But that's saying. That's like saying black people can't be colorist. And that's not true because we're. We're the worst at it. Of course, white people is just you, you a light skinned, dark skinned you.
Damaris
A. I'm talking very specific to Martin Lawrence here. But, but because we know that he wrote on the show, we know that a lot of it was. We know that a lot of it was him throwing his comedy into it. So do we think that Martin Lawrence is a colorist? Because that's what we would be saying here.
Host
I think that throughout. I think that throughout the. It's not a. I don't think it's as black as white, black and white as that. I think that colorism has been so embedded in our society that somebody might not be a bad person for having. For contributing stereotypes to different colors and different shades of black. Because that's just so embedded in our society. The same way that dark skinned women are automatically labeled as aggressive, more aggressive and light skinned women are labeled as softer. Even if no one says it out loud. This has been a societal thing for forever. It's embedded in society. It's an automatic thought. And unless you're super hyper aware of the things that you're thinking in the way that you're moving, you wouldn't even know because it's just always been like that. So I understand what Ari is saying. I don't think it's specific to Martin. And I didn't get offended by what was going on in Martin.
Damaris
I don't think Nobo has ever gotten offended.
Host
But like I said, she's not the first person to bring that up about Martin. There is nothing. There is nothing manly about Tichina Arnold. Nothing manly about her.
Damaris
That's why it was. It's called a joke.
Host
Yeah, but this is the thing. Why would that joke even be made? But.
Damaris
Because that's his bet. That's His. His. His girlfriend's best. That's what you're supposed to do.
Host
If she.
Damaris
On your girlfriend.
Host
If he was light skinned, he would never have called her. But this.
Damaris
We're not doing that.
Host
But that's just what it is.
Damaris
No, that's not what it is.
Host
Okay?
Damaris
That's what they're trying. That's what they're trying to make. That's what Ari is trying to make it and paint it as. Okay, but that's not what it is. Like that. And that's the victim mentality. It has to. We can't. We can't do that to Martin Lawrence in the. In the, In. In the legendary show. That is Martin. We cannot do that because we know that that's not what it was. That's not what it is.
Host
How do you. How do you know that, though? That's what I'm saying. You said, how do you know that?
Damaris
Damaris. We've watched this show. It's been syndicated reruns for years. It's on Netflix. Nobody has ever watched it and said, yo, I ain't gonna lie. He going crazy on Pam. And it's only because she. She brown skinned.
Host
But that's because you weren't. You weren't really looking for it. And you wouldn't be the victim in that. Like, you wouldn't be the.
Damaris
That don't mean I can't see the victim and know that some. Some colorism shit is going on because I'm not the victim.
Host
But we. But what I'm saying is that show came out years ago. Ma. First of all, we can end this conversation because we're not gonna agree, and that's fine. But I just think that, like I said, nobody's calling Martin. I don't. Well, I'm not calling Martin a bad person. I just think that, again, colorism is so embedded in our society that half the time we don't even notice it when it pops up.
Damaris
And I also think that colorism is so embedded in our society that we call something colorism when it's not.
Host
Okay?
Damaris
That's what I think. I think that is so embedded.
Host
Throughout history, darker skin, darker brown and darker skinned women have been labeled as ugly, as manly and aggressive and nappy headed. Those are all colorist tropes. So if they pop up in jokes back in the day, yeah, the same way niggas used to call darker skin African booty scratchers. These things were real. Like this, this happened. But back in the day, we were not as sensitive to it. But that doesn't make it like less real. Light skinned girls have always been labeled as prettier and more attractive and softer though. That's real. They have studies on like that. That is real.
Damaris
I'm not saying it's not. I'm saying here in this instance, it's not real. That's all I'm saying. I'm not saying that it's.
Host
You think that Martin Lawrence in the 90s, in the 90s, you think that he was above being affected by society's tropes. You think that he was just way beyond that. You don't think that society affected him and his writing at all?
Damaris
I'm not gonna say anything at all. No, I don't think him. No, the same thing. Well, first of all, Tichina Arnold and Tisha Campbell are like best friends in real life. They've done multiple movies together, of course. So, like they were casted probably because they have a history. Like, I think they've all done movies before this together when they were all in the same movie.
Host
So do you think it's possible that the same person that has a stereotypical trope on his show named Shanaynay, is that her name? You don't think that that person.
Damaris
Who.
Host
Created that character is capable of having a little bit of colorism in their jokes, even if they're not doing it on purpose?
Damaris
I'm not saying he's not capable of having colorism in his jokes. I'm saying I don't think that. That was Martin's point and that was his thought process.
Host
Oh, I don't think so either. I don't think so either.
Damaris
So what are we talking about?
Host
No, because what I'm saying is it's embedded. Sometimes we do. Sometimes we have stereotypes in our head that because we were raised on it, we don't even think about it. It's not us intentionally being racist or being colorist or anything. These are things that. This was the way the world was when we were raised. So there' we just don't think about. I don't think he was intentionally trying to be harmful because she was dark skinned. I think those were automatically the jokes he went to because that's what people have always said about dark skinned women. It's the easy, low hanging fruit. That's what I'm saying. But again, we don't have to. We can agree or disagree. I understand people's point in saying that, you know, there can be a victim mentality with that. And I also understand Ari's point because she's not the first dark skinned girl to have ever said that. She's not the first person to bring up the fact that there was obviously a clear difference in between the light skinned girl and the dark skinned girl on that show. And also I think if you ask the actors and the actresses, even though they're all cool with each other and the writers, I think they can understand where those tropes come from too, because I'm sure they've experienced that in Hollywood.
Damaris
I would love to hear from Tichina Arnold about that.
Host
Yeah, I would love to hear from her too. I doubt she'd speak on it, but.
Damaris
She would speak on it. Why wouldn't she? I think she would put it to bed very quickly. Like, no, that's not what the energy was. I never once felt like that. I think if Tatina Arnold felt like that slightly, that would have disappeared from the.
Host
But again, I don't think that he was doing it intentionally or whether he.
Damaris
Was or he wasn't. I'm saying if she felt like that at some point in the whole Martin world, she would have said something to the writer, she would have come out and said it. We would have heard her talk about it. Now that years passed, the show was over, I'm sure she would have said something about it and maybe she did. I could be ignorant and never saw her speak about it, but I'm just saying I've never seen it, I've never heard it. This is the first time I'm ever hearing anybody speak about their characters dynamics and saying, you know, bring the whole colorism thing and you know, this, that and the third. I just think that victim mentality is real, colorism is real. And I think we just gotta find the spots where we know for sure that's what that is. But if it's not, which I don't think Martin is, I don't think that was a colorism thing. I don't think that that was on his mind. I don't think that was a part of the energy of the show. I just think that was the best friend of my girlfriend and you know, you know how the relationships are with your girl, your best friend's boyfriend. It's like, he don't like you, you don't like him, you don't think he's good enough for your girl. He think that you the single friend who be trying to have her out in the face of other guys and things. It's that dynamic. You come in the crib, it's like, yo, what you, what's up? What you want, Like, I don't think it was because she was brown skinned. Like, I just don't. I don't get that.
Ryan Reynolds
You said that. You obviously dealt with the MLB world. How has your husband been dealing with the wrestling world?
Tamara
At first, he didn't want me to do it at all. Like, at all was just like. Even my mom was like, why you want to do that? You want to hurt yourself? Go model, go do something.
Damaris
Mom don't understand that.
Tamara
Like, why would you want to? You're gonna hurt yourself. And I'm like, don't put that energy out there. I'm not gonna hurt myself. Yeah, there's something else you could do. Why would you want to do that? My mom didn't understand. He was more so, like, for what? Like, you know, I met him when I was 22. I wanted to be a child psychologist. I did that. He was just like, why?
Damaris
Yeah.
Tamara
So then I went to the trial and all went great. And then he was like, oh, this is about to get real. I said, yeah, it's about to get real. This is what I'm gonna do. But. But he didn't want me to do it at all. And now he's seeing how much work that I've put in. He's proud of me. He's like, oh, my gosh, I'm so happy you stuck with it. Like, I would have never thought you.
Damaris
Look at the change in emotion. Yo, what are you doing? What are you doing? And then once wifey about to become champ, you like, listen, I'm proud of, you know, I knew you was always gonna do it.
Ryan Reynolds
He gonna be ringside and throw her a baseball bat on Saturday.
Tamara
Like, I don't want you to mess up your body. I want you to retire with me. Like, what are you doing? And I'm like, I think what you did was great, but I want to do something for myself. Like, I think I can do this. I can do the child psychology thing when I'm done with this, if I ever choose to. But I want to create something that's legendary for our daughter. Like, I want my daughter to say, oh, my dad did this.
Damaris
Yeah.
Tamara
But I want her to say, but my mom. My mom did this. And that's inspiring to me. So he has his career in. It's different now because he's like the stay at home dad. And now I'm the one always gone. So it's a literally upside down world.
Damaris
Now with you again, speaking it into existence, with you being champion. What do you hope that does for the Little black girls in Florida, New York, California, just as far as, like, representing something for them to look forward to. Say, like, she represents greatness. She represents strength. Storm is in the studio.
Ryan Reynolds
Control the weather.
Tamara
Said that I bring the storm everywhere I go.
Damaris
This book is literally storming. But what do you. What do you. What do you think about? Or do you think about those little girls that are at home looking at Jade this weekend?
Tamara
I do. And it's such a fine line with me because I'm not for kids. Like, being very real. I'm not for kids. I'm sexy, I curse. I'm grown. I'm not. I'm just not. But I do love to hear that I am an inspiration for little girls who see me. They're like, oh, I love how you look. Your confidence radiates all this kind of stuff. Like, I want to be like you. I love it. Never. I never wanted it.
Damaris
Yeah.
Tamara
But I love inspiring little girls that you can do any and everything you put your mind to. I started this at 27, right? And for a lot of people, that can be late. But I was like, you know what? I'm gonna give this a shot. I'm gonna give them all. And let's see who we are. Look where I am now. And we had somebody like Jazz and Jacqueline who did these phenomenal things for me, and Bianca and Naomi.
Damaris
Did you caught that? I want you to catch a close up of Jade. What she said.
Tamara
It's great that people see us like these little girls see us, and they know I can do that. But, yeah, I can do it better. Because that's what we want them to say just as much as Jazz. We looked at Jazz, we looked at Jacqueline. We're like, I wanna do that, but I can do better. I can reach there. And now they can reach there, and the next generation can reach there. That's all we wanna do, is create bigger footprints for the next generation.
Damaris
Now you have a daughter.
Tamara
I do.
Damaris
Would you be happy if she told you, mom, I wanna wrestle as a parent, Right? That face, like, how does that. You know? Cause now you're your mom now, right?
Tamara
Oof.
Damaris
Like, do you say, okay, and just kind of like, cringe on the inside, but still, like, obviously you want her to do what she wants to do and succeed.
Tamara
She's getting a great education first, okay. Something she could fall back on a trade something first, right? And then if she wants to pursue wrestling, go at it. I'm a very supportive mom. I'm like, go at it. I'll tell her if she's not good or whatever you want to call it. Like, okay, well, let's use that trade. But as long as she gets a phenomenal education, something that's steady, that she can always go back to, I'm okay with it. I'm okay with it.
Damaris
I don't know.
Ryan Reynolds
I think the way Bron did it with his son, I think you might have to do that. Mother daughter in the league at the same time.
Tamara
Listen, that would be nuts. I'm okay.
Damaris
That would be the craziest shit ever.
Ryan Reynolds
Wwe, you can hold that idea. It's fine. You can have that one, then.
Damaris
That shoe.
Tamara
I have to start, like, 17, 18.
Damaris
Yeah, yeah. Get right to it, man.
Tamara
It's called a bump car. And it goes up your body. You feel. When you're 22, you'll feel like you're, like, 35. Yeah, it's crazy. It fills up really quick.
Damaris
So you. Obviously. I feel like this weekend, again, Jade will be champion. Rory, she already said that she will bring the title back.
Tamara
Yes, I will.
Damaris
Now, Jade, if Rory and myself wanted to get into wrestling, like, what would we have to. You know.
Tamara
Like, we had somebody back there that's like, nah.
Damaris
Cause, you know, Baby D just, you know, she. She don't believe in our abilities, and she don't think that we could do it. But if me and Rory.
Ryan Reynolds
She gives Bianca vibes. I'll say that.
Damaris
Yeah. Like, she's definitely Bianca. But, like, if me and Rory wanted to be tag team champions. Okay, well. Yeah, pause that. Like, what do we. How do we prepare ourselves? Like, how do we. You know? Like, what is our first order of business?
Tamara
Going to the PC.
Damaris
What is the PC?
Tamara
It's down in Orlando. It's a training facility.
Damaris
Oh. So we would have to train. So was that about a month? Two months?
Ryan Reynolds
Malt said we'd have to train.
Damaris
Yeah, no, I'm thinking we could go. We could pull up Sunday with Jade, bro. Like, we can go Sunday and kick some ass.
Tamara
For sure. Sign some liability forms in case you die.
Damaris
Yeah, I got. In case you die. Like, you.
Tamara
Oh, you die. Got it. Yeah. Okay. Yes. It's a lot of things that.
Damaris
You die.
Tamara
Okay.
Damaris
Okay.
Tamara
Yes. Yes. But train, like, getting your mind ready. It's not that easy. It's really not. All these celebrities that come into, they are all training. Like, it's not just walking into the system. I don't know what the Internet paints, but.
Damaris
So this is training, like, two, three, four months initially.
Tamara
Oh, right. Oh, you got.
Damaris
Yeah, no, we would need four years.
Ryan Reynolds
A decade.
Damaris
Maybe. Yeah. We would need five years.
Host
I know.
Tamara
So when I work with Daniel Bryan, he was telling me, like, you don't get comfortable until like seven years. Like, he didn't get comfortable until seven years. And I'm four years and a little bit of change into the game.
Ryan Reynolds
Yeah.
Tamara
And my first match ever was on national tv, so it's such a weird thing because most people before they get on tv, they've had a plethora of. Of matches. I didn't like the world see me as raw as you can get someone. So it would take a while. It would take a while. But it depends on like how athletic you guys are. Like, it depends on how good you are. You got that it factor.
Damaris
The toe boo's still clicking. I can still knock down the three shooting.
Tamara
Yeah.
Damaris
Other than that, I can't do nothing.
Ryan Reynolds
At one point I was. But I have a 2 year old. I got dad weight. I need, I need.
Damaris
You need some.
Ryan Reynolds
I need a decade.
Host
That's not weight.
Ryan Reynolds
I need a decade. For sure.
Tamara
A decade.
Ryan Reynolds
Absolutely. At this point, Amar, I mean, at least I chase her. My cardio is great because I chase a two year old all the time.
Damaris
But your windows up.
Ryan Reynolds
I very much be easily suplex.
Damaris
Yeah.
Ryan Reynolds
Just put it that way.
Tamara
Okay. You'll. You'll take the suplex. Pause, not give it.
Ryan Reynolds
Oh, that's the wrestling fans gonna kill me in the YouTube comments.
Tamara
Oh, my gosh.
Ryan Reynolds
But with that said, I wasn't even thinking training. I was more thinking, if we come up with a good name, is that even worth going to Orlando? If we don't have the brand together already, why would I even train?
Tamara
Yeah, that comes second.
Damaris
Oh, so Brandon comes after training.
Tamara
Yeah.
Damaris
Okay.
Tamara
That's how you do at the PC. You can come up with stuff, but they can have you on the side. Yeah, but it's. It's your ring of ability as well.
Ryan Reynolds
I'm coming in full costume. You know, like the guy that shows up to the court with all the headbands.
Tamara
What are you gonna do? What are you gonna do?
Ryan Reynolds
Get suplexed?
Damaris
Yeah.
Tamara
I'm trying to think your whole, like, whatever. Unless that's your character to get suplex all just come out suplex.
Ryan Reynolds
I mean, I know they pay well.
Tamara
Kool Aid manager jumps through.
Damaris
Nah, that hurt too much, man. I don't suplex me.
Ryan Reynolds
Yo, being the Kool Aid man jumping.
Damaris
Through, I would be like just being.
Ryan Reynolds
The rag doll wrestling. If you give me the right check, I would do it. I could see private school prices and I'm Fine with it.
Damaris
Yeah.
Tamara
You get paid a lot of money?
Ryan Reynolds
Yeah.
Tamara
You paid a lot of money.
Ryan Reynolds
Throw me into the second. Throw me onto Westside Gun.
Damaris
Jay, do you use any of your. I guess, your psychology. Do you use that in your matches at all? Like, does that brain click in during your matches?
Tamara
Just controlling the match. Like, just trying to stay calm throughout the match, Taking my techniques and breathing and things of that sort. Because when I was a child psychologist, I would have to breathe with my kids because they would get so worked up in situations, and sometimes you have to think like a kid and you have to. Because when you're doing something, it's like, you know, you're jittery, like, and anxiety, and you're. It's. You have to calm down. So I'll use breathing techniques, but for the most part, no. Unless it's a kid out there. But all of us are adults. Like, I'm gonna talk to you like an adult, I guess, or that's your.
Ryan Reynolds
Way to shit talk.
Tamara
Well, I'm just good at that. That's.
Ryan Reynolds
I have a degree for you.
Damaris
It's part of your Persona.
Tamara
Yeah, but that's. That's something totally different. I was gentle with people. I talk shit. It's a. A. It's a different. I can. I can mine and mess with you mentally, but it's a whole different type of game. Whole different type of game.
Damaris
Can we make your playlist to listen to on the way to the event? Like, can we put together. We already. You already told us who you like to listen to.
Tamara

Damaris

Damaris
If he see you losing, he might start tripping.
Ryan Reynolds
No, all those charges were alleged.
Tamara
Fan base would sit and be like, who is this guy?
Damaris
Yeah.
Tamara
And that would, like, just ruin me.
Ryan Reynolds
To me, that would be cool. Like. Like, I think that's what's cool with bringing that culture into wrestling. Like, that makes you so unique. Of. I've even seen, like, what, like, Westside Gun and. And Dizza and Wale and everyone have Done with hip hop and wrestling, like, where dance hall can't do the same.
Tamara
It gets weird. It gets weird. It's a very, like, wrestling. Wrestling fans are very hard. I wouldn't say they're hard to please, but they like their community.
Ryan Reynolds
First of all, he said, spit on me. Step on my. Yeah, they're hard to please. They're. They're very demanding.
Damaris
Very demanding.
Ryan Reynolds
It's hard to please. Spit on me. Step on my face. That's a hard person to please.
Damaris
And if you're the guy after him, how do you follow that.
Tamara
Kids two people down. I was like, are you watching this? You know, like a little boy grab me, though. So it's like. It's. And I. The dad probably was like, yeah, go up there and, like, grab it. I've had a little boy grab me before, which I'm like, yo, lock these.
Ryan Reynolds
That's when you should have got your child psychologist back to talk to the dad. You're raising a demon. What the is wrong with you?
Tamara
He looked at me like, yeah, he waited for that.
Damaris
He waited his whole life. He waited all six years for that. Yeah. Did you pick your walkout song yet, or do they pick it for you?
Tamara
No, I picked my walkout song.
Damaris

Tamara
I need a nasty electric guitar. That's. I just. I'm an electric guitar person. I am the electric stove.
Ryan Reynolds
The gas didn't work. You're not hearing it in the beat.
Tamara
But I need. I need a good. I just. That's my thing. Like, that's just my thing. I love an electric guitar. I don't know. I just. I love it. So if you can give me something with electric guitar.
Damaris

Description: New stories, new laughs, new random hot takes that no one asked for... New Rory & Mal
The episode kicks off with Rory and Mal diving into their experiences with the "T App," originally designed to help women identify potentially dangerous men by highlighting red flags such as criminal history or abusive behavior.
Rory:
“I was trying to figure out if a man I was entertaining was gay or a serial killer because he was too perfect. Something had to be wrong.” [02:25]
However, over time, the app's purpose shifted drastically. Instead of solely focusing on safety, users began using it to share personal grievances and gossip about men’s personal qualities.
Mal:
“It stopped becoming about safety and started just becoming about gossip... like, 'his dick is whack' or 'his butt stinks.'” [05:10]
The transformation culminated in a significant data breach where users' personal information, including IDs and selfies, were exposed publicly.
Rory:
“It's supposed to delete them the moment they have them, but there was a huge data breach.” [05:20]
This breach led to widespread criticism, with users blaming the app for mishandling their data and turning a safety tool into a platform for public shaming.
Rory:
“If the app was used for what it was originally created for, I understand why it exists. But making it about personal, stupid stuff? It just sucks.” [05:35]
Rory and Mal express their excitement about being ranked number nine on Complex's top 10 hip-hop media platforms. They reflect on the honor and significance of this achievement within the industry.
Mal:
“We ended up being at number nine. Congrats to everybody here. Thank you for everything you guys do.” [12:35]
They discuss their opinions on other entities in the rankings, such as Bootleg Kev and Black Boy Max, debating their deserved positions and contributions to hip-hop media.
Rory:
“Bootleg Kev should have been higher. He's been smoking shit.” [15:44]
Mal:
“Lists are cool, but don't think you're not doing good work just because you didn't make the list.” [16:24]
A significant portion of the conversation centers around Kai's positioning as the top hip-hop media platform. Rory and Mal analyze whether Kai truly represents hip-hop media or if his content is too diverse to warrant the top spot.
Rory:
“Does Kai belong number one on a streamer list? I don't think so. Is he a hip-hop platform just because Offset is a rapper?” [20:19]
Mal:
“He listens to hip-hop and has big moments, but is that enough to define him as hip-hop media?” [21:52]
Transitioning from media rankings, Rory and Mal explore their playful aspirations to enter the world of professional wrestling. They discuss the training, challenges, and humorous scenarios that would come with such a venture.
Rory:
“We would need four years of training, maybe five. It’s not easy.” [50:34]
Mal:
“Signing liability forms in case you die? That's serious!” [49:28]
Tamara, a guest speaker, shares her journey into wrestling, inspiring Rory and Mal with her determination and vision to create a legacy for future generations.
Tamara:
“I want my daughter to say, ‘my mom did this,’ and that’s inspiring to me.” [45:01]
The trio engages in lighthearted banter about potential wrestling personas, walkout songs, and the dynamics of a mother-daughter tag team.
Rory:
“If we come up with a good name, is that even worth going to Orlando?” [51:05]
Mal:
“Triple H will come out and kiss your feet. We cracked the code!” [57:28]
Rory and Mal engage in a deep conversation about colorism in television and media, specifically referencing the portrayal of Pam in the show "Martin." They debate whether the jokes made about her character were rooted in colorism or simply character dynamics.
Rory:
“No, but maybe Machikawa was trying to be funny without thinking about the implications.” [38:00]
Mal:
“Colorism is so embedded that sometimes we call something colorism when it’s not.” [38:53]
They discuss how societal stereotypes have historically influenced character portrayals and whether current interpretations are a reflection of that legacy or something more intentional.
Rory:
“Darker skin women have been labeled in ways that are real. Light-skinned girls are labeled as prettier and softer. That’s real.” [39:31]
Mal:
“But Martin Lawrence wasn’t intentionally being harmful. It was more about character dynamics.” [40:28]
The episode concludes with discussions about future projects, community support, and maintaining positivity within the hip-hop and media landscapes.
Rory:
“Top ten hip-hop media means something. We're grateful and appreciate it.” [15:44]
Mal:
“Continue doing good work and keep putting hip-hop first. That's what matters.” [18:44]
The hosts wrap up with humorous conversations about their wrestling dreams and the potential impacts on their personal lives, emphasizing their camaraderie and playful spirit.
Rory:
“If they play our walkout song, I might actually train.” [55:10]
Mal:
“That's one of the greatest rap songs ever. It’d be epic!” [55:40]
Rory on the T App's Original Purpose:
“If the app was used for what it was originally created for, I understand why it exists.” [05:35]
Mal on Hip-Hop Media Rankings:
“Lists are cool, but don't think you're not doing good work just because you didn't make the list.” [16:24]
Tamara on Inspiring the Next Generation:
“I want my daughter to say, ‘my mom did this,’ and that’s inspiring to me.” [45:01]
Rory on Colorism in Media:
“Darker skin women have been labeled in ways that are real. Light-skinned girls are labeled as prettier and softer. That’s real.” [39:31]
In this episode of New Rory & MAL, Rory and Mal navigate through impactful discussions ranging from the unintended consequences of a safety app's evolution, their recognition in hip-hop media, aspirations in wrestling, and the critical examination of colorism in media. Their blend of insightful analysis and playful banter offers listeners both depth and entertainment, making it a standout episode for those keen on hip-hop culture, media dynamics, and engaging conversations.
