Welcome to New World podcast on the iHeart podcast network. The Trump administration has an interesting plan to provide Cold War era plutonium to nuclear power plants. Fact is, we have a great surplus of plutonium developed during the Cold War when we had many, many more rockets than we have today. That surplus is available and the administration is looking at the idea of converting it from nuclear warheads to companies that actually want to use it to fuel nuclear power plants. The Energy Department has more than 50 tons of surplus plutonium left over from nuclear weapons programs and the agency previously planned to dilute and bury the material. But if it's worked this way, it'll become the first time the US Government has made weapons grade plutonium available for private companies in order to provide power to the economy. On Tuesday, the Energy Department said it selected five companies to enter into advanced negotiations to potentially receive surplus plutonium. Some people have criticized Democrats in particular and some non proliferation experts who argue that the plutonium can be used to create nuclear weapons. But if it is disposed of correctly and if it is distributed in such a way that it's no longer useful, then frankly it becomes a very, very useful fuel and it really economically would be very helpful. I should also point out that one of my favorite people, Jared Isaacman, the administrator at NASA, has warned that a Chinese crewed mission around moon could come in 2027. Isaacman's warning the Chinese are serious. They're methodical. Isaacman warned that the next people orbit the moon would be from China. China, however, has not publicly announced a plan for such a mission. In a keynote speech, Isaac would said quote, the next time the world tunes in to watch astronauts fly around the moon, which will likely be sometime in 2027, they will be taikonauts and America will no longer be the exclusive power to send humans into the lunar environment. So far, all the crewed missions to fly around orbit or land on the moon have been flown by NASA. In the nine Apollo missions from 1968-72 and in Artemis 2, which just flew this year, all the astronauts on the mission, except for Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen. Anonymous two have been Americans. Coming up, I'm joined by Dan Doyle, president of Reliance well Services and Arena Resources and author of the new book of Roughnecks and a Startup. In the Great American Fracking Book, he's going to talk about the massive risk he took during the financial crisis when he bet everything on the fracking industry. That's next.

I'm really pleased to welcome my guest, Dan Doyle, President of Reliance Wealth Services and Arena Resources and author of the Book of Roughnecks and Riches, A Startup and the Great American Fracking Book. Dan, welcome and thank you for joining me on New Twirler.
Dan Doyle
Pleasure to be here. It's a real thrill to meet you and to be on your show as well.
Newt Gingrich
Unlike a lot of people who think tanks and write about what they think it might be, you actually did it. And you're right out there in the middle of it. You started your company in 2009 just as the country was coming out of a financial crisis. A lot of people back then were looking to hide and be stable. You decided he wouldn't just jump in to fracking. I'm curious, how did you get to that point in your life where you were comfortable taking a risk on that scale?
Dan Doyle
Really the best way to classify it is just stupidity. Because in hindsight, you know, what had happened is oil prices in 2008 and July of 2008 had run up to about, I think it was $147 a barrel. So inflation adjusted, geez, I don't know, where would that be now? $250 a barrel, right? Today we're at 89. You know, I wanted to get back in. I had left the industry for a while and kind of forced out as a young guy down in Texas and just went into a long, long protracted decline. And I moved on to a different industry and I'd started an entirely different company up or actually had equipment and rental company and wanted to get back in. And I thought, okay, this is the opportunity. Everyone's working, I'll do this now. And that began a series of missteps and misadventures. Lot of fumbles, some tough times. But a year and a half later or so, kind of got through it.
Newt Gingrich
Did you always had an interest in the oil industry?
Dan Doyle
I did. My background was as a kid growing up in Erie, Pennsylvania. I was at the University of Pittsburgh, kind of fumbling around, taking English classes, economics classes. Really didn't know. I mean, back then college was cheap enough, you could kind of Figure it out as you went. My father and a good friend of his, they weren't rich men. I was one of seven kids, all of us a year apart from. But they decided they wanted to get into oil business. So they cobbed together some money and went out and drilled a shallow well in northwestern Pennsylvania. And I used to come home from school every weekend and with all my brothers and sisters and his friend Norby and a couple dogs and we'd take the station wagon two hours to the well site and screw around. And I just kind of caught the fever, you know, I thought it's legal and it's kind of like treasure hunting. So I went back to Pittsburgh and changed up my major to geology and kind of did a sprint and when I got out, started raising money for wells in Pennsylvania, then ultimately in Texas.
Newt Gingrich
I get the impression just about the oil and gas industry in general that there's a certain almost cowboy quality to it, that if you catch the rhythm, it's a way of life.
Dan Doyle
I would say for sure it's risk takers and you try to understand your risks. We still frack back eas, but we have a company that drills wells out in the Powder River Basin in Wyoming. And it's definitely cowboy. It's remote.
Newt Gingrich
Wyoming is so underpopulated.
Dan Doyle
Yeah, it's really something to see. We're in the least populated county of Wyoming, so that kind of tells you. But we're 25 miles from the nearest paved road and it's just us, a few ranchers and a lot of cows, some wildlife. But the landscape in eastern Wyoming, it's not like out west and the Tetons, it's a little different than that, but it's definitely a cowboy culture. And it's gotten a little bit more corporate than it was in the old days. Oil and gas, there's more discipline, but there's still plenty of cowboying going on.
Newt Gingrich
Did you also go to Texas or did you just go to Wyoming?
Dan Doyle
When as a young guy I was down in Texas working and I moved down to Abilene. Some guys in the steel business were selling line to the steel business and they had some extra money and I was just a 23, 24 year old kid and they go, hey, why don't you go down there and drill some bigger wells? So I went down and we're drilling wells kind of in the Abilene area. But then we hit a downturn and it just didn't recover, you know, it didn't recover. So this was decades ago. Waited around and I don't know. I was wondering what I'm going to do because there's no hiring. Nobody wanted to drill. It was just a really long protracted downturn in the 80s that went into the 90s. I had a friend that was making commercials up in Pittsburgh. I moved back to the Pittsburgh area. He gave me work and I thought maybe I could do this, this. And I ended up going to graduate film school at New York University, which is a real detour. Got out of that and started kicked around in the movie business for a while and then started a company up, a rental company and it got big enough to. For me to sell it and start fracking. Initially Pennsylvania, but ultimately all through Appalachia in the mid states, then headed out west where we drill our own wells.
Newt Gingrich
I have to ask you a childish thing. Have you seen Landman?
Dan Doyle
I've seen a couple of the episodes, sure.
Newt Gingrich
So what do you think?
Dan Doyle
You know, well, it's entertaining. Some of it's actually pretty close, but some of it, there's a bit of a departure from, you know, how it really goes. But Billy Bob is not a landman. Billy Bob is an ops manager. The landman sounds better. He's right. The first episode where there's the well meaning, environmentally conscious attorney kind of schooling on her, you know what fossil fuels really mean? It's not just, oh, it's gas at a gas pump. It's everything. You know, I enjoy stuff. I enjoy a little truth telling like anybody, you know. So good to see that this is fun.
Newt Gingrich
And I. So what would a real landman be?
Dan Doyle
Landman is somebody that goes out and leases land, works with ranchers or farmers or whoever the landlords are trying to pick up the mineral rent. Interesting. They're the frontline people. They put it all together because you need to acquire huge tracts of land and it's got to be contiguous and you know, you got to work with the state, with the federal government, with fee owners. You're going to private owners. It's a labyrinth. We have two that are working with us and you need it, you need every bit of it.
Newt Gingrich
So that's their specialty.
Dan Doyle
That's all they do. Yeah, just go make deals.
Newt Gingrich
It's one of those things that I just couldn't help myself. But now I want to go back to your life because I think one of the things people don't realize, there's a period there where we talked about peak oil and where a very famous expert had basically said, I think his name was King Hubbard had basically said, look, there's A limited amount of oil on the entire planet, we're eventually going to run out. And this was for the elites. They really accepted that. And then along comes, I believe it's a Greek immigrant working with the US government, developing the capacity for fracking and for horizontal pipelaying in such a way that suddenly you can connect over. Not profitable in the past, but become profitable now. It seems to me, if I understand your story, you're really right there at this truly remarkable breakthrough which changes the entire projection of oil in the world. I think the numbers. Correct me if I got this too far off, but I think for North Dakota alone, fracking moved them from about 800 million barrels to 24 billion barrels in reserves, because suddenly you could reach all this small pockets that historically it didn't pay you to try to drill down to find them. When you first heard this idea, since you were already in the business, what was your reaction?
Dan Doyle
Fracking has been around for a long time, but nobody was doing horizontal fracking. And the Greek immigrant, the son of the Greek immigrant, they ran a diner was George Mitchell. And George Mitchell should have won a Nobel Peace Prize, honestly. He really undertook this himself with his oil company out of the Houston area. He also developed the Woodlands down in Texas. He's a busy guy, you know. But nowadays, because of horizontal fracking, it is such a game changer. Very briefly, why it's such a game changer is in the old days, let's say you had a formation at 5,000ft deep and it was 40ft thick, and that's where your oil and gas was. What you would do is you drill a vertical hole and you would expose 40ft of oil and gas reserves. Now we go down and we turn and we go out for 2, 3, 4 miles. And so instead of 40ft of exposed reserves, we have 2 or 3 or 4 miles of exposed reserves. And that's why these wells are so big. Also, in the old days, we would go after trapped oil that were the sandstones or carbonates and pretty much limited to that, but the source rock were the shales where the oil accumulated and was baked and kind of made. And because of hydraulic fracturing, we were able to extract from the source rock and not just the trap rock. It was just a game changer. In fact, about 3/4 of all U.S. production, we're about, you know, mid 13 millions right now. 13, 5, 13, 6, 7, whatever it is, 3/4 of that is due to fracking. If we didn't have this or if all states behaved like New York and I, you know, write articles, they show up here and there about the craziness of New York because I was there when they said, no, we actually still frack in New York. We're probably the only company there's a couple little guys, but we're one of the few that frack in New York under certain circumstances. But had we gone that way, we would completely be beholden to the Middle east and Russian oil, just like the Europeans have done to themselves. NATO screaming for our help to combat the Russians in the Russian Ukraine war. Yet they're financing it through their natural gas purchases over the decades. And they won't drill for their own natural gas all throughout continental Europe. But the governments there, like New York, won't allow it, so they buy it elsewhere. And in this case, mostly the history has been from Russia. That's starting to change some. But isn't it crazy that we've got to go spend all our tax dollars to buy weapons to ship weapons over and the Europeans have been funding the Russian government to wage war on one of the neighbors?
Newt Gingrich
When we come back, we're going to discuss why fracking became one of the most divisive issues in America and why Dan says many people misunderstand both the industry and the people behind it.

Why did fracking become such an enormously divisive issue? And why are there people who are so bitterly opposed to it? I mean you must have encountered conversations where you just can't break through. What do you think is on the
Dan Doyle
other side of that disingenuousness, really plain and simple. When it first came out horizontal fracking, it wasn't this groundswell of opposition. And then there were a couple documentaries, I think they were called Gasland. And in the first one he captures gas from a sink. You know, guy lights it on fire and oh my God, look at this, look at this. It's from the wells. I don't know what was ultimately decided there, but that's a long time occurring matter in Pennsylvania shallow wells. You know, biogenic decay is methane that just something that the earth creates swamps, all the biogenic decay and ocean floors and all the methane releasing that goes on. So it was disingenuousness and kind of caught the eyes of celebrities and we're a celebrity culture. And then the guy makes another one, a follow up. He can't get his shot so he pipes in natural gas and he fakes it and he discredits himself. And it was funded by the park foundation out of Ithaca area, Cornell area. And those kids are fighting each other because one side's liberal, one side's conservative. But they're spending money not in the intent of the original trust. They're funding these propaganda films and so it's just a shame. I saw another one that the actor Mark Ruffalo funded and I thought this is ridiculous. You can get anyone to say anything. And so anyways it starts this whole movement, it's starting to relax a little bit now because the data center Guys out of Silicon Valley, you know, absolutely need natural gas. And really the big winner with these guys is coal. We're burning more coal now than ever to support the grid, and not by way of percentage, but by way of tonnage. We've never been busier. We drill wells around the coal mines in Wyoming. So they're very busy. But I don't know why we have to politicize everything. But they politicize it to the point of making it unaffordable for the poor. New York State won't allow natural gas extraction, yet the southern tier counties where it would occur are much poorer than the northern Pennsylvania counties where it's allowed. Natural gas prices are, I don't know, 25% higher in new York than elsewhere. And that's just placed on the consumer. You know, New York, 26% of all kids born in New York City are born into poverty, 26%. And New York has billions of billions of billions of recoverable dollars from allowing shale extraction, but they won't allow it. Their electricity prices, I believe, are about 40% higher than the national average. It's just a tax on the poor. It doesn't do anything for the environment. Absolutely nothing. You know, they want to push renewables. Renewables. For all the money spent, the needle has not been moved. I mean, there's more energy produced from renewables, but the truth is they have not increased their foothold relative to other forms of energy like nuclear and fossil fuels. So it doesn't really work. It doesn't work. Solar does not work in New York State. Maybe it's a great idea in Arizona, but it's not a great idea everywhere. And they want these, all the above classification for energy, that's not really the way it should be. It should be where it makes sense. And so, you know, you can tell I'm a little fired up about this because it's so dishonest to put renewables out there as this savior of the planet. And the truth about it is it's a passive system. And if it's going to turn active, you need battery backup. Oil and gas, you can throw it in a pot, it'll store just fine. But you can't do that with sun and wind. So you've got to create battery. And battery production is probably one of the most toxic industrial activities on planet Earth. You know, just look at the case in Sudbury, Canada, with the super stacks where the, they denuded all the acid rain from smelting the heavy metals that are needing battery production. So they just put it higher up in the atmosphere. And that's the way to deal with it. So nobody ever, ever really talks about the strip mining, the human rights issues with some of this stuff. Not so much in America, but elsewhere. And nobody talks about. They'll put a solar farm up and there'll be hundreds of acres of panels and it's a death zone. It's an absolute death zone. Nothing can fly over it. It's superheated above the ambient temperature. You can't have cows grazing. And if you go up to an oil well, there's a pump jack with a fence around it that takes, you know, a plot. You put fencing up, you know, because you don't want anything to get hurt. But it's minuscule, its presence, its footprint compared to what solar is.
Newt Gingrich
And isn't it true that with fracking you actually can have a smaller footprint on the surface because you're doing so much more of it underground?
Dan Doyle
Yeah. Now there's pads. I was just talking to a friend at Halliburton and they're completing a 36 well pad off of a piece of acreage that's, I don't know, maybe 500 by 700ft. And they'll probably reduce that over time. 36 wells that are all two miles long. That's amazing, the amount of energy that they will extract from that single pad with a tiny, tiny footprint. The truth doesn't get out there, unfortunately. It's political. And I have to say, on the oil and gas side, on the producer side, guys like me that go drill wells or frack them, whatever I am, all of the above, solar and wind, sure, where it makes sense. I think there should be more nuclear. But on their side, it's renewables or death. You just can't have anything other than renewables. And it's got to be everywhere. It doesn't work. It's just funny how the left is intolerant of what actually works and really sort of punitive. They're always suing and all that. It's just crazy. It's really in all of the above matter and they won't accept that.
Newt Gingrich
Coming up, Dan discusses why he believes New York's fracking ban left entire communities economically behind, while neighboring Pennsylvania counties prospered from the boom.

New York to me is the most fun. Fascinating, I guess because I was born in Pennsylvania and you think to yourself, you go up just north of State College and there's this invisible line. And below the line people are making a heck of a lot of money. And above the line they're living at a poverty level which we used to associate with Mississippi, but Mississippi now has a higher income than that part of New York desert.
Dan Doyle
Really? I believe it.
Newt Gingrich
From your standpoint, when you try to talk to these people, what seems to be motivating them? Ideology.
Dan Doyle
You can't break ideology. And eventually it breaks in some people, some people don't. But the hard left runs lockstep with each other. There's no challenging the conventional orthodoxy of oil bad, wind good. It's really hard to get through them. This really the war on fossil fuels is just a war on the poor. If you're a humanist, your forum I don't want to pick on the Pope, but it doesn't help when even the Pope weighs in on anti fossil fuel. And I'm Thinking, how are you going to get people out of poverty without fossil fuels? Why do you think everybody wants to come to America? I mean, there's a reason why the southern border was a mess until Trump corrected it. People want to come to America for the quality of life. A lot of that has to do with plentiful and cheap energy, and it's really not destroying the planet. All their arguments die and then they create them. Being the hard left, they don't hold up and so they create new arguments. CO2 was the big one. Now we're finding the Earth is greening up and our CO2 levels are not that high. 400 parts per million. In terms of the history of Earth, that's pretty low. They sort of bake the cake by using selective information rather than all encompassing information that supports their thesises. And also our universities are very, very liberal. And good luck telling the truth about oil and gas relative to other forms of energy and getting grant money to support your research. It's not going to happen. You got to run lockstep, just like the left tends to do.
Newt Gingrich
Well, you know, I have to say, you're sort of a breath of fresh air. I once wrote a book called gasoline at 250 and Obama attacked me for it on the grounds that it was a fantasy and was impossible. On the left, you just have this passion for causing pain. You're obviously very successful, you're very smart. Why did you decide to write a book? And why would you call it Of Roughnecks and Wishes?
Dan Doyle
I think it's because, you know, I used to work as a writer when I was a really young guy and made a little money at it and then thank God, stopped. I know you've written a lot of books, Mr. Speaker, but it's really torment, really. It's not the writing them, it's what the hell do you do with it afterwards? Anyways, it was so crazy of a startup. I didn't know what I was doing. And I had these partners that were kind of insane, and we hired a truck builder that pulled a knife on me after I gave him a quarter million dollars in a trailer in Oklahoma. And it was just one thing after another. I mean, the attorney General's office showing up at my house for stuff that I wasn't doing, but partners were. It was one crazy episode after another. And I thought, you know what? This is a book. And so I was taking notes and finally I got a little time to write it. And a good friend of mine had another friend that was an agent in D.C. and sent it to them and they said, hey, we could sell this. And so they sold it and ended up with a small publisher, that great guy that runs it, Andy Zucchardi, but a small publisher that does conservative books. And you know, truthfully, a lot of the bigger houses the agent was sending it to were complimentary, but they can't touch it. You know, it's a book about oil and gas that's not critical of it. What the hell do you do with that? That's what happened. And Of Roughnecks and Riches wasn't my title. It was the agent came up with that. They said, now your title sucks. We're going to give you a good one.
Newt Gingrich

And now I'm pleased to introduce a new segment in its world where I answer listeners questions. To ask a question, please email me at newtingrich360.com Maria in San Antonio Ask Mr. Speaker, I was relieved to see the election outcomes in my state as well as Louisiana and Kentucky. President Trump has proven once again that he is a powerful voice for the people. What do you think will happen in the upcoming midterms? Look, I'm very simple about this. If the President can find a way to get the price of gasoline down below in the 350 range, the Republicans are going to win a decisive, historic election. But if people go into Labor Day and gasoline is still very, very expensive and people are very angry, then Republicans are probably going to lose. Even though on issue after issue the Republicans are stronger than the Democrats. So it's very, very important that the administration find a way to get the Strait of Hormuz opened up enough that the price of oil has started to come down. I look forward to hearing from you. To ask a question, please email me@newtingers360.com thank you to my guest Dan Doyle. New Troil is produced by Gingrich360 and High Art Media. Our Executive producer is Garnesy Sloan. Newt Gingrich
this is an iHeart podcast. Guaranteed human.
Release Date: May 31, 2026
Host: Newt Gingrich
Guest: Dan Doyle, President, Reliance Well Services & Arena Resources; Author, “Of Roughnecks & Riches”
In this episode, Newt Gingrich sits down with Dan Doyle, a true oil and gas industry insider, to discuss Doyle’s journey as an entrepreneur during the American fracking boom, the realities and politics of fracking, the transformation of America’s energy landscape, and the social and economic divides created by policies around fossil fuels—especially focusing on his new book, “Of Roughnecks & Riches.”
Wild Startup Stories:
Doyle’s tales of partners “kind of insane,” nearly being threatened with a knife over a business deal, and regular brushes with regulators and unexpected chaos.
Pop Culture Clash:
Gingrich’s amusement at “Landman” and Doyle’s critique of TV’s oversimplified roles in oil.
Socio-Economic Insights:
Stark contrast between neighboring states because of fracking policies—New York’s southern tier vs. Pennsylvania.
The conversation is candid, humorous, and laced with industry jargon and insider anecdotes. Doyle is self-effacing about his risk-taking, bluntly critical of what he sees as dishonest coverage of energy issues, and supportive of a pragmatic, all-of-the-above energy strategy.
This episode provides a rare, unvarnished look at America’s energy revolution from a boots-on-the-ground perspective—covering not just the technology of fracking, but its real-world impacts, the risks and chaos of entrepreneurship, the economic effects of energy policy choices, and the persistent battle over how (or whether) America should extract and use fossil fuels. Doyle’s stories and strong views offer a counter-narrative to mainstream critiques of the industry, while Gingrich guides the discussion with historical context and his characteristic curiosity.
