Welcome to Moments with Marty, your short, sharp shot of leadership insight to help you to stay on track between our weekly episodes of the no Bullshit Leadership Podcast. We've been doing this for a good seven years now. We've produced over 500 episodes of no Bullshit Leadership. So there's no doubt in my mind that the principles we reveal are as timeless as they are practical. But I was challenged by a potential client the other day who asked me a question that I don't get very often. Marty, how much of your content is based on empirical research and how much is from your own lived experience? The implication being, I guess, that I'm making it up as I go along, but I actually think it's a really important question. On the upside, I have an impeccable management education. I hold a high quality MBA from one of Australia's top ranked business schools, and I've completed the Advanced Management Program, Harvard Business School's top executive education offering. I also managed to build a pretty successful executive career, culminating with the performance turnaround of an energy company that was pretty much on the ropes. This blend of education and practical experience gives me an incredibly high degree of confidence in my business and leadership advice. But one thing did occur to me as I was pondering this question. A lot of the principles I espouse are quite categorical. They feel incredibly black and white. When I speak about leading for performance, I don't leave much wiggle room. You have to be friendly, but not friends. You've got to put respect before popularity. Don't dip down, ever. You have to put excellence over perfection, always prioritise speed over accuracy. And you have to have one hit to pat and one ass to kick for everything. I realize that in order to convey the principles clearly and concisely, I explain them in rather singular terms. Do this, don't do that. But as is the case with every facet of life, nothing is that black or white. There are exceptions, there are judgment calls to be made, and there are a thousand annoying shades of grey to consider. Just think about the principle of single point accountability. In my experience, this is the number one performance lever to improve execution in your team. The vast majority of companies I've seen tend to over consult and over collaborate all care, no responsibility becomes the dominant culture and it's a massive performance killer. The only thing I've seen arrest this decline is crystal clear decision rights. Which is why in my world, single point accountability is a black and white rule. What I don't often say though, is that to implement it properly you'll have to navigate some shades of grey. For example, how much consultation should you undertake before you make a decision? On one hand, you want your accountable people to have the autonomy to make critical calls, but equally you don't want them making knee jerk, unilateral decisions. This principle of single point, one head to pat, one ass to kick, is a prerequisite to high performance. But balancing consultation to get the optimal outcome requires astute judgment if you want to build unshakable confidence in uncertain situations, here's how. The first thing is you have to adopt the no Bullshit Leadership principles as the bedrock of your leadership style. Why would you do that? Well, because it works. The second thing is that you need to enforce the principles diligently until you start to see exceptional results. This is going to build your confidence that the principles actually apply to your context, no matter how different you may think you are. And finally, once you have that base level of confidence in the results, just ask yourself, how can I improve performance even more? How can I allow individual flexibility without weakening the foundations? Your confidence will grow when you take action and prove to yourself that the action you took created a better outcome. Only then will you acquire the confidence that enables you to flex your approach in extreme uncertainty without losing your conviction. For more depth on this insight, have a listen to episode 273 of the no Bullshit Leadership podcast. It's never black and white. We'll leave a link in the show. Notes. I really hope you enjoyed this moment and that it gives you that extra little spark to be a no Bullshit Leader.
