Welcome to Moments with Marty, your short, sharp shot of leadership insight to help you to stay on track between our weekly episodes of the no Bullshit Leadership Podcast. Talking of moments, Leadership has many moments. Most leaders are okay in the run of the mill, day to day moments, but very few step up in the really big moments. In situations that feel overwhelming, many people freeze, consumed by their fear and completely unable to move forward. Their ability to make decisions which might be okay in non stressful situations becomes virtually inoperative. The only thing they can do is to wait for someone else to step in and take control. And this is where you see real leaders emerge. They're the ones who say, give it to me, I've got this. They're prepared to own it. And they're not afraid to take on the burden of leading everyone else through treacherous terrain. It's so interesting to see how leaders around you step up. And it's not always the most senior leader with the most impressive title, right? You see it on sporting fields all the time. When a team is down on the scoreboard in a critical moment, a weak leader will look to the team for answers and the non leaders on the team just bow their heads in defeat and despair. But the real leaders rally the team around them. They don't shy away from the cold hard facts of where the team is at that moment. They, they just take responsibility for finding a way to get through it. And that leader isn't necessarily the team captain. It's often just the person with the most passion, the greatest will to win, the one who's determined to do their best and not leave one ounce of unspent energy on the field. In the big moments, these people are the natural leaders who others gravitate towards. I say natural, but remember, it's not about talent or some innate attribute that they may have been born with. It's about having the heart and the spirit to keep going no matter what. Bear Grylls, the former elite SAS soldier who overcame every obstacle with sheer determination, says that when you're mentally strong, you know you can do anything for another 10 seconds. Leaders who stand up in the really big moments know that they can do anything just for another 10 seconds. They've been through dire situations before and they know that by stepping into the breach the only feeling they'll regret is the feeling of not having given it their all. In contrast, look at weak leaders. They use their teams like human shields. They don't step forward and expose themselves but instead they look for safety in numbers. They'll happily surround themselves with people to share their burden and they're happy to put their people at risk to protect themselves so that they feel more comfortable. When it's not a big moment you don't need to be front and centre but when it is a big moment you need to be there. That's what no Bullshit Leaders do. For more depth on this insight, make sure you take 15 minutes to listen to episode 204 of the no Bullshit Leadership podcast the Big Leadership Moments. We'll leave a link in the show notes. I really hope you enjoyed this moment and it gives you that extra little spark to be a no Bullshit.
