And we got rapid fire questions because this is the Drop. We'll have some fun right at the end. But first, we had a stunning trade on Thursday morning. The Minnesota Timberwolves reportedly acquiring Lamelo Ball and Josh Green from the Charlotte Hornets in exchange for Nasrid, a 2033 unprotected first round pick. That player's like in grade seven right now. Three first round pick swaps in 28, 29 and 30 and then three second round picks. I did the emergency podcast yesterday. You can go check that out. Link is in the show Notes. Sort of immediately reacting to this. Again, stunning trade task sort of came out of nowhere. But what side do you want to start with? The Minnesota Timberwolves making a big gamble here on Lamelo Ball. I think that's fair to say. Right?

Gotta start with the Minnesota side because I'm just excited to watch them in the regular season. And I say the regular season because I'm not betting on them in the playoffs with Mellow Ball.

Okay.

He's never been there to show it. And I do think that is part of the reason why the Charlotte Hornets decided, hey, we'll get rid of him here. He's played two play in games and I wasn't convinced that he is going to be a great player after watching those two play in games.

Had a game winner in the line.

Yeah, it was very up and down.

Yeah, it was an up and down game for sure.

Yeah, he put the weight on his own shoulders and just kept shooting and just kept by far and away the most shots for the Charlotte Horns in both those games combined. A lot of them. I think Charlotte was really impressed this season with how he reduced his number of shots compared to last year. You know, he took a little step back and that's what they wanted. He took 20% less fewer shots than in 24, 25. And the Minnesota Timberwolves are looking at that and say, okay, if he's going to be able to do that and distribute, then I like our chances here with another ball handler beside Anthony Edwards to take that pressure off him. Not super efficient guy. I think if you look at the stats, you think, oh, he must be a pretty good three point shooter and all that. I mean, his three point shooting is fairly average. His two point shooting is way below average. So his true shooting percentage way below average when it comes to NBA numbers, pretty bad. 54.6 on the league average is 58.1. But he played 72 games, so maybe he's healthy.

He was last year. And, and that's why it is surprising that the Charlotte Hornets said, whoa, this is his best season since 21, 22, playing 72 games. They reduced his minutes to only 28 minutes per game this season. Did they have a plan to trade him at some point? I think the plan was probably just keep him as healthy as possible and it absolutely worked out. But at the same time, when it comes to the playoffs and there's a team that's all over him and ready to battle with him and test him, we can go through all the good teams in the Western Conference. The okay, so you're San Antonio's. Do you think that Lamelo Ball will be able to play up to that type of level?

So it sounds like you think this is a little too risky for Tim Connolly and the Wolves here.

Yeah, I think so.

In making this move for Lamelo Ball.

Yeah. Yeah. Plus, I mean, they have depleted their roster.

Oh yeah. So there's a lot switched it up. They had too many bigs, now they're all gone. You know, Rudy Gobert of course, is still there and now they had no guards and now they've got their backcourt at the very least. And IO de Sumo as well.

Right. So without Julius Randall there's a lot of pressure on Jaden McDaniels, most likely to play a lot of four, and Johan Baron J to help out. He is a super young player to help out behind Rudy Gobert. Is that a good game or two in the NBA? I mean, really, the games haven't mattered a lot when he's played really well, summer league when he's played really well. So, yes, this is a huge risk. LaMelo Ball has never played in a playoff game.

And I think that should be noted. And when he go, you go all the way back. Even to when he played in Australia in the NBL. He played 12 games there. There wasn't a lot of experience here. When it comes down to the nitty gritty, the tough times, the war of attrition. I don't know if Minnesota is going to be better off in the postseason. I think that's a fair question.

This is the third time in the last five off seasons that the Wolves have swung for the fences here. This is Tim Connolly's MO, right. They traded a boatload of draft capital for Rudy Gobert in 2022. And at the time we said, whoa, that's a lot of draft picks. Five, I believe it was for Rudy Gobert. But. But I think that's ultimately worked out for them. Obviously, it turned them into a great defensive team and a team that was in two Western Conference finals and just like a perennial postseason team now, at least in the mix. So that one worked out. Then he swapped Karl Anthony Towns for Julius Randle and Dante DiVincenzo in 2024 after they were in the Western Conference finals, after they were one of the final four teams. Part of that was financial reasons, decisions to be made, but still ballsy. And now they've turned Julius Randle and Nas reed here into LaMelo Ball and they don't have a whole lot of moves left to make. I don't think when you look at what they have in terms of picks, because there are a lot of swaps here. A lot of picks are already out the door. This feels like. Feels like it's like one final big swing here to try and like shake things up, make this work with LaMelo Ball beside Anthony Edwards. And I think the thinking is we saw what happened over the last couple of postseasons. Teams load up on ant. They might make life difficult. They lack other creators, other facilitators. And maybe the hope here is that that's one thing Lamelo can do. What when he plays, he's not afraid to shoot. He's not afraid to create. He will put pressure on. He's obviously going to get it going in transition. That's the thinking. Right. But man, you're right. We've never seen in the postseason and also you're hoping that the body holds up and the ankles are okay and they were last year. But before that he obviously missed a lot of time.

Yeah, he's played 63 potential 63% potential games throughout his career. So not that high. But coming off his best season. It is a question why Charlotte would say we're pulling the plug on the Lamelo ball experience here to get that first round pick. As you said, so long for now when a seventh grader is able to be an NBA player. Plus Nas Reed and some pick swaps. Yep, that's essentially what it comes down to. That's risky now after watching Carl Anthony Towns traded under the Glenn Taylor ownership of. Okay, you thought that's all money this one. As far as trading Nazrid and a pick, this is a new ownership with Alex Rodriguez and Mark Laurie. I thought this is kind of strange but they're swinging for the fence to get another ball handler to get two players from Anthony Edwards draft. You know the one in three pick from that draft, him and Lamelo. It's cool. That's why I'm excited. It's popcorn time.

But the playoffs are going to very fun.

It should be very fun. Super fun. Can you imagine the first post game interview after I don't know, an Ant game winner or a Lamello game winner. The two of those guys possibly on the mic. Well, first off, somebody will be fined. Somebody will be fined $35,000 for you know, probably a swearing or something like that, but it will be hilarious. The Wolves have lacked a dynamic point guard really for the entirety of Anthony Edwards sort of career here. Especially as he's hit his prime now and as great as Ann is, he's not a natural playmaker. I don't think he ever is going to be. And that's fine. He's a scorer and we've just seen so many instances where they're just trying to wring out anything out of a half court possession here. And as the main guy and they're like all right, well let's try it with Lamelo beer. This is, this is wild.

This is insane in a weird way, but very fun.

That's why it's awesome for us as basketball fans because it's wild on both sides. The Charlotte Hornets are not a free agency destination Period. They just aren't. And then you go and trade your premier player here for Nas Reed in a future pick. It's, it's shocking. It's surprising. Are they going to be much worse than they were last year?

That's the question.

Yeah.

It's because he is for as many faults as Lamelo Ball has on his game and we can go through some of them. Like the guy does lead winning offenses. Like the numbers back that up. Like when he plays, of course, a huge part. He's an offensive engine. He, he is, he creates great shots for players. Again, he pushes it. He's got great size. You know, he's fearless. It does work. Or at least in, you know, like that 500 minute sample that we had last year. They had one of the greatest lineups we've ever seen. Now I think the Hornets are going fool's gold. Like really, you know, didn't get us into the playoffs by any means. There was something there with that lineup, but it's probably not the greatest lineup in the last like 25 years of play by play data. Right, right. And selling high on him in the healthy year. And obviously a contract extension around the corner.

Like they're, they're deciding. We feel comfortable with Kobe White maybe replacing it, I don't know, 80% of it. And then Canipal leveling up Brandon Miller maybe more. I guess that's the thinking here.

Sure.

But it is strange to have a very successful year. I know they didn't make the playoffs, but for the Hornets, best year in what, a decade. And then they trade the guy that's like sort of the, that spearheads the whole thing.

Yeah. And you're not going to pluck some great free agent to replace him by any means. Number one, because it's a, it's not a free agency destination. Number two, that's just the way the NBA works. Now it's likely if you're going to replace him, it's Kobe White or some guy you're going to draft down the road. But As I said, 63% of potential possible games that he's ever played. That's a, that's a big question to see him going forward like that. I, I from Minnesota, you say, okay, Anthony Edwards is our number one guy. And LaMelo Ball showed that he can take fewer shots and he can sort of slide into that, you know, secondary role at times.

Yeah, he was still their number one guy.

But I'm, I agree that he's worked really well with Knipple and Brandon Miller and then the lineup to fill it out was Miles Bridges and Diabate. That was the lights out lineup.

It was really, was really good. It was scary when they got into the play in games and how he took every shot. I know he did. He did end up hitting that game winner.

Yeah. He got the prime video necklace. He did looking at photo like oh yeah that.

And then the next game after that was a debacle by everybody on the Charlotte Hornets. They did. So a lot of those weren't good shots that got him there. He shoot really poorly from three point land that game and you can see the numbers don't boat all that well. You think again he's an incredible scorer and three point shooter. He's about average. His three point percentage and his two points are way lower. And you think oh maybe he gets to the free throw line to compensate. He doesn't really get to the free throw line. So it feels like a great regular season player. And when it comes to the postseason I ain't, I ain't putting money on

as a 16 game player.

Eh, Fandulio is not getting my money for to. To try and bet on Lamelo ball. I don't see that happening. It's a tough one. It's a very, very fun experiment though.

Zach Cram made an excellent point on ESPN yesterday. He noted how the Wolves had a choice to make last summer. Right. It was Julius Randall Nasrid, Nikhil Alexander Walker, potential free agents. And for all intents and purposes they had to pick between two of the three. They weren't going to be able to keep all three. So what did they do? They went for size and they went with the power forwards. They had Randall, they had Reed and they let the smaller Nikhil Alexander Walker go to Atlanta. And now you fast forward a year here, it feels like they maybe wish they took a mulligan on that. Right. Because both those guys are gone and they go back to more of, you know, guards in the IO de Sumo signing obviously who they traded for the dreidel and now Lamello ball. It's probably. I thought that was a good point.

You know they went too big maybe and now we're electing to go the other way and they have to fill out the rest of the roster here.

They need. They don't okay McDaniels unless he is the answer and they just go we're fine. Go bears. The big McDaniels is the four. I guess that means who is the three? IO he's six foot four. So you're getting small. I mean, McDaniels is six, nine. That's okay for a power forward position, height wise, but he's fairly slight. He actually guards. He guards like point guards and shooting guards. You know what I mean? So, like, then who does that mean is guarding the threes and fours on the other team? Ant or IO it's not gonna be lamello. So they have things to do here.

Right. Yeah. I think ideally I.O. is still a bench player. Right. I think I sort of agree.

Which is. I mean, obviously got paid here and good for him. And I don't think it's like, oh, crazy that he'll be coming off the bench making what, 22 million? Okay, that's fine.

I. I guess you can look now. Now as I say that, you look at what Wemby was able to do with smaller four and three beside him. And Wemby's a different guy than Rudy Gobert, but it was Julian Champeny beside him really, sort of as your four and. And Devon Vassell. And so they're smaller and re.

Yeah. I suppose, like, Rudy does make everybody want to get away from the lane too. Not as much as Victor Wembanyama, but he does scare everybody from the lane too. So you can see that. Because now. Yeah. With. If you're talking about offense on the Minnesota side with IO, Anthony Edwards and LaMelo Ball as your 1, 2, 3. I mean, any of those guys can break guys down. So there's. There's that part.

Yeah, that's fun. I think there is a little bit more pressure on Jaden McDaniels, even though, as I say, those other three guys can do their scoring. We'll see if Jaden can step up. Not Jaden. Yeah, Jaden. Jaden. Jalen. Yeah, Jaden. Gotta go with Jaden because he's the guy with the defense.

And he had a good year last year, efficiency wise. 51 from the floor, 41 from three. And then in the playoffs, he did come through that with that really, really big game to end their series against the Denver Nuggets in the first round. That was big. But there is pressure on him and Anthony Edwards is always asking him to keep up and.

Yeah, and he's hitting his prime here soon. He's nearly 26. He'll be 26 at the start of next season. Yeah, but there's a lot of pressure on him now. Obviously he's out there for defensive purposes, but he's going to need to contribute to a little bit more offensively. Like the guy did Average still under 15 points per game last year. He had big moments. That's his thing, right? He always has like the big game or two. Everybody gets excited, oh, wow, we got something here. This guy might be a 25 point game scorer, but he has not been able to do that consistently. And not that he will have to because there's a lot of scoring coming in here, but man, they are. They're just thin. They're just thin up front. Like decisions with Kyle Anderson. I mean, he's back on the team and maybe we'll continue to be there. There's probably a role for him here.

And it's so interesting with Anthony Edwards. This is a move to please him. This is a move to make him happy. This is a move to make the Wolves believe that they can go further in the playoffs. But a big question with a mellow ball. And then as we mention here, so much pressure on Rudy Gobert as the guy and the only guy. And sometimes he has to go to the bench and sometimes when they were able to beat Victor Wembanyama, he was on the bench. And Nas Reed was out there in game one of the playoffs against the San Antonio spurs in the fourth quarter, Rudy was on the bench and Nazride was out there on the perimeter just to get Wemby moving. And Rudy's getting old. He's 34 today. Tron catch today. He's 34 today.

It's just at some point we've always wondered whether Rudy was getting slower. You know, there was that couple years, I guess it felt like a couple years going from defensive player of the year to, okay, maybe he's getting older, maybe he's getting slower. And now he's just back to being incredible. At some point, it's probably gonna. The pendulum's gonna swing the other way. How many more years does Anthony Edwards have with Rudy Gobert, Ballin? And then this, this experiment now with Lamelo. Man, it is. It's tumultuous. It is.

I think a lot of people are as fun as this is on paper and the jersey sales and the post game interviews and all that with Anton Melo as your two guys. I think there's concern that, oh, this will be awesome for four months. Yeah, this will be great for four or five months. And then maybe Ant will get tired of. Of Lamelo and the way he plays. I think that's the fear maybe of some Wolves fans, some just casual NBA fans. Whatever. I could see it. You can squint and see that happening. Oh, it'll be a great little honeymoon phase. Oh, absolutely. But yeah, especially as. As the games get a little more important, tight, whatever into the postseason. Will Lamelo be able to keep up? Because again, I just go, holy crap, Wolves GM Tim Connolly. Like, we got to call this guy Kenny Rogers, man. This guy's the gambler. This is what he does. He is betting on so many things here. He's betting on Lamelo Ball's health. As you started this off with, he's missed a lot of games with generally wonky ankles. The braces this kid wears on his. On his legs are nuts.

Yeah. And they reduced his minutes too. I think that probably a part of 28 minutes.

He's betting that Anthony Edwards is going to enjoy playing alongside Lamelo Ball. Another ball dominant co star. Right. This is will be sort of new for Ant playing alongside a guy like that. He's betting that Lamelo Ball is going to be playing and exceeding under more scrutiny because I'm sorry, you're playing in Charlotte. People just watch the highlights. They're like, oh, that was a cool move. But now these are like you're going to marquee games, obviously big matchups. So more scrutiny and then just more expectations. This is not again, this isn't the Hornets trying to make the playoffs. This is the Wolves trying to win a championship. So there's that. He's betting that IO, McDaniels, Gobert, even Anthony Edwards, who I think is going to be asked to do a lot more defensively now out on the perimeter. Can they cover for Lamelo on that end? Lamelo's big, but he's a joke defensively. He does not try all that hard. He's sort of checked out.

Yeah. I do want to give him some credit for last year. There was some effort on that end

and they were a top 12 ranked defense. So that's fair. Good pushback.

He was getting after it as much as he possibly could.

You're still putting him on the worst offensive player on the other team generally though.

Yeah. As far as the.

You're going to hide him as much as you can.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yes. And you got to give Anthony Edwards as much rest on the other end to help him offensively. And if you're like, we're talking about all these small lineups, I mean, IO does get after it too, but he's going to be teeny tiny out there. So, yeah, there's lots of questions defensively.

And then finally Connolly is just betting on the idea that he can replace Randall and Nas Reed here with again, very minimal remaining resources. Like, they just don't have a lot. Minnesota's hard capped at the second apron. So they have $208 million committed to nine players as a result of this trade. They have like $15 million in wiggle room. They have to sign like five guys. What's a vets minimum now? It's like two and a half million. It's tough.

They will do it, don't get me wrong. But it's not like they have other draft capital to try and get guys and make moves. So this is ballsy.

It is ballsy. It is. It is really swinging for the fences, as you said. When it comes down to the numbers, how are they going to fix the holes that they have And Naz Reed, who was, you know, a part of the culture and now moving to Charlotte there, is that, that hole too, that's, you know, this emotional hole, which I think is. It's got some legitimate legitimacy to it. Right. I, I feel that way anyways.

And you said you do think this is like a proactive move from Connelly and obviously ownership and the wolves to, like, please Ant, so to speak. Right. Or to quiet the noise of like, well, that's the next superstar that's going to demand a trade out. Not that that couldn't come, especially if this backfires and blows up in their face. But for now it does sort of like, all right, a year or two here, we'll see if this works and see how this, these two mesh together. The ball and Ant era here, there's

But when it comes to a seven game series, I think other, other teams are going to annoy the hell out of Lamelo and he's just not going to be able to play up to that. We've never seen it. I know we did touch on a little bit but yeah, they are removing here, as most people are calling it, the engine that sort of led the NBA's great lineup or at least high volume lineup and a team that was really good offensively, especially after a slow start to the season. They had an unbelievable offensive rating with that, that special five of ball, Knipple, Miller, Bridges and Diabate after the all star break. I mean I think SHU had it down for a 134.9 offensive rating which sounds like sounds fake but they had found something and now they're electing to go. You know what? For fool's gold we don't have to worry about contract extensions. We think we can replace maybe what he brings on a much cheaper value and we can turn this over to more to a Knipple and a Miller. And they get Nas Reed here. I mean, I don't want him to get lost in the. In the shuffle here, but he joins a pretty good front court. When you think of Miller as a small forward, then Diabate up there, Cal Brenner, Hans Steinbach, who they just drafted Nas Reed. There's going to be. I mean, he's going to have a hell of a role here. And he's a solid 2A player.

Absolutely. They were 44 and 38 last year. I'd expect the expectation to be 500 this season. And they should be because Kobe White is a real good basketball player. He's definitely good at finding his own shot. And that's a big difference between him and Lamelo Ball. Lamelo Ball does set up other guys a lot of the time. Even though I, you know, I will pick apart his shot selection. He does pass. Oh, God. And so Kobe White, he likes to pass. Kobe White. You. You go and look at his numbers. He. He def. He makes his own shot and he doesn't assist nearly as much as Lamelo Ball when he's on the floor. So him and Conquer Nipple and Brandon Miller can go looking for their own shots. And those three with Nasrid and Moussa Diabate, I think you can say that will be their starting five. If Miles Bridges is still there, he'll be gone after this season.

Had a big shot, of course, in that one playing game. So yeah, he gets this deal here, which is obviously a fraction of the cost of what Lamelo makes or was making and maybe even was going to make more in a contract extension. And they like this guy. He also drafted Christian Anderson at number 18. I don't think he's going to slot in here immediately by any means, but maybe down the line. But yeah, they're just selling high. They're literally, I think, just selling high on Lamelo's healthiest season successful season. It do. It does make you wonder a little bit. What do the Hornets know that the wolves don't with him. I don't know. For my mind goes like. I'm like, I wonder if we're gonna get the now you tell us column in a couple weeks here. That could break the Internet about something about Lamelo. I don't know. But now you've got, you know, more pressure on conquer nipple to make things happen and assist the ball. And I think he is a decent passer. I think he is. He can. He can play make a little bit Nas Reed to do that a little bit too when he's out there. But I guess right now it n read would still be coming off the bench if they're starting Miles Bridges and Musa Diabate at the 4 5. I guess you know you're going to drop Moate. I don't know. Yeah.

Things are just getting, you know, handed around here like basketball cards, these second round picks. Did you see the stack going around that like the percentage at least in the second round, all but one second round pick was traded. I think the Raptors were the only team to actually use their second round pick on the guy and select them.

I think that's what this is all about for the Memphis Grizzlies. For Thomas Isa low to say hey teacher Zach, teach our Boozer how to be gritty and fight. And with Zach Eady specifically it's all about positioning and all that. And Isaiah Stewart can potentially pass that along. Guy heads definitely given Detroit that type of culture from him and others obviously. But he was a big part of that and I think he could do that with Memphis while at the same time the Detroit just moving on from a guy who was part of who they were is big. Yeah. And it sure feels like they're going elsewhere.

But BEASTU allowed opponents to shoot just 44% at the basket last season per NBA advanced stats which led all players with at least 100 shots defended the the previous season he was second best behind Chet Holmgren. So this is a two year sample here. The guy is amazing. We've talked about it. You've talked about before like his weird timing.

But he'll be the more experienced of the bunch and he can play.

So by renouncing their own free agents if, you know, if they elect to do this, most notably Tobias Harris, partially guaranteed Duncan Robinson, the Pistons can now get to around 33 million in cap space this summer with Isaiah Stewart's money off the books. And they've been linked to a number of obviously guards this year. We've already talked about this a little bit. You know, a couple of them are off the board now. You know, if there was any realistic chance to try and get Austin Reaves, let's say Kobe White was linked to them. So there's some names gone. But Norman Powell maybe there's still a Tyler hero move. There's some other ones. We think they're adding some scoring. But in addition to all this, according to Sam Emick of the Athletic, all NBA forward Jalen Duran was underwhelmed by the Detroit Pistons initial offer in restricted free agency and is planning to explore sign and trade scenarios when they're permitted to do next Tuesday. So this was the article I guess last night here from Amic at the Athletic. Duran is eligible for a five year $287.1 million extension. That would be 30% of the Pistons salary cap. That's because he made all NBA. But Sam wrote the gap between the sides is large enough that Duran is considering ways to land elsewhere. Again, sign and trade route deemed preferable to signing an offer sheet with another team that the Pistons could and likely would match. What do you think of this? The idea maybe the Jalen Duran won't be on the Pistons.

I think it's just a negotiation tactic. I think he does go back to the Detroit Pistons because if you go sign somewhere else, let's say it's, it's just a restricted free agent offer. You go sign with a team that's able to sign you to 4 and 177 because you got cat room. You have, you need cap room to be able to sign that much. So it doesn't apply to a lot of teams out there.

Because if you're making that much money, we're talking about big time players and we could be talking about the Kawhi Leonard rumor that the ESPN has thrown out there that Detroit is looking for Kawhi Leonard who has one year left on his contract but apparently does not want to resign in Detroit. He only wants to resign with the Toronto Raptors or I mean that's a Rumor or the San Antonio spurs, the two teams that he's played for outside of the Clippers, those would be the two teams that he would go to. So I don't see that sign and trade happening because we're talking a lot of money here with Jalen Durham. Beyond that, there's the Jalen Brown talk. I think if I'm Brad Stevens, or I don't even say. I don't even need to say if I'm Brad Stevens, I think Brad Stevens is thinking that's a downgrade and we're not doing it. And I think Jaylen Brown is capable of coming back and playing for this team. So I don't think they're doing that at all. And then there's Tyler hero, something like that. But are the Bucks doing that? I. I don't know. That one makes a little more sense, player wise, because the Pistons need a Tyler Hero. And maybe the Bucks will say, all right, we'll take on. We'll take on Jalen Jordan. But they have. It's a weird scenario. That's why I think he ends up. He ends up in Detroit.

The gap between the sides is large enough. What? What? It's really how you interpret what that is. So we'll see here. But I don't know. I think this is actually smart, though, from the Pistons, as crazy as that

He signed his extension for way less because the cat was getting paid a monstrous amount of money. So Brunson took less. Just push that forward and say, hey, you see these numbers? This is what you should be making. And he'll look at and say, no. And then, you know, but his agents.

Let's talk about the Lakers because their guard Austin Reaves has signed a four year, $185 million contract to remain with the franchise. He declined a $14.9 million player option, which was, duh, to trigger this payday. So in terms of average annual salary, this deal is a full max contract for a player with six or few years of experience. However, the Lakers could have resigned Reaves for up to five years, too. So there's, you know, this was the Negotiation, I guess. Four years, 185. Biggest contract ever signed by an undrafted free agent in NBA history. So congratulations to Austin Reaves on that. That is pretty impressive. Now, what do you think about this?

I think. I don't. I have no touch as to how much each guy is making in the NBA when it comes to salary cap. I'm not doing the spreadsheets that would make it more understandable for me. But I was just talking about Jalen Duran making somewhat similar money as Austin Reaves because it sounds like a lot for Austin Reeves.

I think we all expected this, though.

We did. We did. Yeah. And that's why I hesitate and I say he's earned it definitely in the regular season. Now he's got to show it in the playoffs. He did have that one good run against the Memphis Grizzlies where he said, I'm him. No, what'd he say? He. Me. I. Him. I know, it's like a two short word.

Me. I. Me. Whatever it was, he's a very capable player. Aside Luka Doncic, I think the. The physicality part is. The important part is if he can get stronger and durable, then he can do it in a postseason. And maybe these last few years have been a good trial run for him.

Yeah, this is tough. I mean, you have a hundred million dollars now to Luca and Austin Reeves. And by the way, Luca sounds like he wanted Austin Reeves back. He sees him as an important piece as a running mate. So, I mean, you're obviously going to talk to him about that.

Yeah, it's like me and Kyrie. Kyrie's a different player, but you know, that type of thing.

And he is a defensive liability, though. Austin Reaves, I mean, and like, Luka is not a lockdown defender, too, so that's a bit of a scare. I don't see why he like this idea, like strength and all that, or defensive acumen. I don't see it changing much because Austin reaves is not 22 years old like Jalen Duran is. He's 28. Like, it took a little longer to get here and get established. He was underpaid, by the way, for a long time here over these last couple years. Now he's maybe. Maybe we'll be overpaid, but maybe it all washes out. Right? But the simple truth is having Reaves, I think at this price, next to another poor defender in Luca, is a tough spot, at least to build a championship team. Impossible. No, but tough. Then again, what were you going to do? Are you going to lose Reaves? You're going to have a massive hole in your offense. So you're sort of. They were sort of. I mean, this was. Their hands were tied, I think, so to speak, here. And he was going to always sort of get this because. I don't know. What, you're just going to let him go? I mean, no, but it's a lot.

This. Okay. I have Never been the biggest Austin Reeves fan. I know there are reavers in them. I haven't. This deal screams a little bit Zach Levine 2.0 to me. It does because Zach Levine was coming off all star seasons with the Bulls before He signed a five year, $215 million deal in the summer of 2022. He was around the same age. His average salary was basically the same here, 43 million PER. And what was happening, the Bulls were looking to trade him like felt like a year later. Took a little longer to get out of it. But I'm a little fearful of the way the type of player he is because those guys are scorers for sure. They contribute around the edges in other departments. But like I don't know. That's what it feels like to me. This could be bad is my point.

I hear you, but what else did they do? But the difference between the Lakers now and what the Bulls were then was the Bulls had money tied up into so many guys with Levine, DeRozan V and Lonzo Ball at the time you, like you just said, it's just Luca

Yeah, I hear what you're saying. Now it's just Luca reeves and their third highest paid player for next year's Jared Vanderbilt at 12 million because LeBron is unsigned. But they're trying, they were trying to get. We just mentioned about Isaiah Stewart. They would have loved to have Isaiah Stewart. They didn't have the picks. They didn't have those three second round picks. Even their cupboard is pretty bare. So it is a scary time here for the Lakers.

It really depends. Do you think Austin Reeves is in the same caliber, same tier say as guys like Devin Booker and Trey Young and Dear and Fox and Jamal Murray? I'll just throw those four for now because if you believe that then there's no real big problem with this contract because it's similar to what those guys make in terms of, you know, Booker a little bit more. But like where they start and where it goes, it's around the ballpark. And reeves did average 21.5 and 6 over the last two seasons on really good efficiency. 47, 37, 87 shooting, splits as a second, sometimes third option. So it's not really an overpay when I like do look at it compared to these other guys. But I also don't know and I'm not sure that I think he's better than some of these guys. So I don't. But then again it's like, shut up. I am. Look at my numbers. Look what I've done. The guy has played through injury too. I mean, that was a big blow on the last postseason. I think he probably shouldn't even have been out there, but he sucked it up and gave it a go, so we'll see. I, I don't think this is going to age all that well. But he's proven everybody wrong through his entire career here, so why not another one in me?

Yeah, I am, as you said, or I'm him, as he said, against the master. Yeah, I think I said that because I tried them all. But when I say physicality, it's not just about defense. It's about being healthy and being this, this, this, this sport. It takes a lot out of guys over a six month regular season and then here we go for the playoffs. So I think Austin Reeves just has to get stronger in that regard. And then as I mentioned about the other parts around him, we know what Luca wants. He wants great defensive players. So if he's okay with Austin Reeves, it's about number one, bringing Rui Etchemura back and then hoping that some, somehow they get some gift of an incredible center, defending, everything. And it's not deandre Ayton anymore. And a power forward too. They got lots of holes. I mean, they got, they got holes across the board. Right now it's those two guys in the backcourt. But then you're, you're hoping for what I mean, Jake Laravia to be a new guy, deandre Ayton again to be even better. I mean, they have holes at the 3, 4, 5. Really?

Yeah, they had a lot of work still to do here. Yeah, ton of off season work in terms of filling out the rest of the roster. I mean, of course there's the huge LeBron James question too. What's going on there? I wonder if Reeves can continue his streak of increasing his points per game scoring every season. Comes in scores, only 7 points per game, obviously as a rookie. Then up to 13. Sort of got his name in six man of the year conversations. Fringe. Then it was up to 15.9, then it was up to 20.2 and last year 23.3 points per game in 50 or so games because he was injured a little bit. So guess. I mean, you know, they're hoping he's still a 25 point per game scorer. I think around that.

But he tries hard on defense, I'll give him that. But I. He is not by any means a defensive lockdown. Player. And it's tough next to Luke.

And I know I'm starting to talk about Yaxel Lindenberg rather than Al Horford. We know what Al Horford is, but if he can help Jax Lundenborg be better positionally, defensively, just to do everything defensive to help use that 74 wingspan. That guy is really, really big. I think that's well worth every penny for Al Horford.

But I think this is good value for the, the Suns and, and Mark Williams saying thank you for believing in me, unlike the Lakers who wrote me off after that physical. So yeah, good money. The Suns are running back the same team and that's what they did to themselves after the whole Durant Beal thing. They had to extend this the length of being an average team. They're, you know, a very, very impressive season last year and they overachieved, but they can't really do much more. It doesn't feel like than that. Right. How much better can they possibly get if they're healthy? If Dylan Brooks is healthy, then maybe they can get better.

And ESPN says Mark Williams has allowed opponents to shoot around 65% at the rim throughout his career. That's insane. Insanely high.

They do want to give Jalen Green an actual year to see what he is with this team.

On Wednesday, the Atlanta Hawks acquired the draft rights to center Henry Vasar, the 52nd overall pick in the 26 NBA Draft from the LA Clippers, in exchange for the 57th pick and good old cash considerations. This was your sleeper pick. When we were looking at the draft, you liked what you saw from the big UNC center.
