OCD always wants you to zoom in, to zoom into the thoughts, to zoom into the content. And what you actually need to be doing is zooming out of it, seeing it for what it is. If you're talking to a coach or a therapist or a doctor, what are they? The way they're looking at your thoughts is very objectively. So it's almost, if you notice, it's kind of like you're speaking a little bit like two different languages, that they're saying, this is content, this is ocd. So they're viewing it from very high up perspective. And you're zoomed in, you're like, no, no. But this thought, this very specific thought gave me this very specific feeling, and it was important. And what I tell clients, I'm like, hey, wait a minute. But you had this thought before and the one before that and the one before that. And notice how when we start to kind of zoom out a little, we see that, oh, it wasn't only this thought, there's other ones. And then you zoom out and you're like, oh, yeah, I've had this for years. Oh, wait, they were all the same. They all gave me these real feelings. So you start to see not the individual tree, but the whole forest and that all the trees are very, very similar. And you don't need to react this strongly to just this one. So it's always pull yourself back that this is thought number 1 million. No, you don't have to take it seriously. No, you don't have to go into the details. You need to go on with the day. It doesn't matter the differences between this thought and the one before that and a million before that, it's the same. Choose to keep going. And I promise you, if you keep going, in a little while from now you will see that it's the same. But right now you don't have that ability, so you have to manually override it. I'm Ali Raymond. I'm an expert in OCD recovery because I've been working with clients for the last 20 years, and I can tell you, anybody can fully recover. If you need help, the link is below.
Podcast: OCD Recovery
Host: Ali Greymond
Episode: OCD Always Wants You To Zoom In
Date: May 26, 2026
In this episode, Ali Greymond discusses a central OCD pattern: the urge to "zoom in" on obsessive thoughts and details. She explains how this narrow focus keeps OCD powerful and why the real path to recovery is learning to "zoom out," seeing the bigger picture of your thought patterns. Drawing on her 20 years of experience, Ali provides down-to-earth advice for resisting OCD's demand for hyper-focus and shares how adopting a wider perspective diminishes OCD’s hold.
Ali Greymond’s episode spotlights a key insight in OCD recovery: the value of “zooming out” from obsessive thoughts rather than narrowing your focus on each one. By recognizing repetitive patterns and refusing to treat every thought as urgent or unique, listeners can begin to break OCD’s cycle. Ali’s practical and hopeful advice reinforces that with effort and perspective, anyone can recover from OCD.
