OCD recovery is not linear. You're gonna have bad days. You're gonna have days where you fell down. But it's the overall progression. And this is why we do recovery tracking where we see, okay, let's say for four days, the person was reducing nicely. Rumination was going down, compulsions were going down. Then they took a step back, went up a little bit. Okay. But they still move down from the way they were last week and definitely move down from the way they were two weeks ago in terms of the behaviors. So it's the progression overall. So let's say you are here. Less behaviors, less behaviors, less behaviors. Whoop. Went up. Okay, but then that was just the one day. Then continue to go down as you were. That's normal. It will not be. I've never had a setback. I was fine. Everything was great. I went from 100 compulsions a day to zero without any setback. Setbacks will happen. They happen to everyone. It's normal. Just dust yourself off, move on. It's very important that you don't dwell on it too much. Just, okay, it was a bad day, whatever. Back on track. That's how you have to treat setbacks. 1. Recovery Progression Is Not a Straight Line
“OCD recovery is not linear. You're gonna have bad days. You're gonna have days where you fell down. But it's the overall progression.”
— Ali Greymond [00:00]
2. The Role of Recovery Tracking
“Let's say for four days, the person was reducing nicely. Rumination was going down, compulsions were going down. Then they took a step back, went up a little bit. Okay. But they still move down from the way they were last week and definitely move down from the way they were two weeks ago in terms of the behaviors.”
— Ali Greymond [00:23]
3. Learning from Setbacks
“It will not be—I've never had a setback. I was fine. Everything was great. I went from 100 compulsions a day to zero without any setback. Setbacks will happen. They happen to everyone. It's normal. Just dust yourself off, move on.”
— Ali Greymond [01:08]
4. Practical Mindset for Setbacks
“It's very important that you don't dwell on it too much. Just, okay, it was a bad day, whatever. Back on track. That's how you have to treat setbacks.”
— Ali Greymond [01:33]
Ali’s tone is calm, reassuring, and practical—directly addressing common fears about setbacks. She underscores that everyone has challenging days in the recovery process and that what matters most is persistence and perspective, not perfection.
For listeners looking for guidance and reassurance, this episode serves as a reminder that setbacks are just part of the journey—and it's the overall direction, not daily perfection, that leads to recovery.
