May my tongue sing of your word, for all your commands are righteous. May your hand be ready to help me, for I have chosen your precepts. I long for your salvation, Lord, and your law gives me delight. Let me live that I may praise you, and may your laws sustain me. I have strayed like a lost sheep. Seek your servant, for I have not forgotten your commands. Pursued by God Written by Marvin Williams David Utall is a cognitive scientist who studies navigation but has problems navigating his way around geographic locations. This isn't a new problem for him, but one that goes back to when he was 13 years old and got lost for two and a half days on a hike. Udall admits he's still terrible with simple directions in life, but some people are natural navigators, knowing exactly where they are and how to get where they desire to go. Others, like Udal, struggle even with clear directions and often get lost. The writer of Psalm 119 also felt the disorientation of lostness, writing, I have strayed like a lost sheep. Seek your servant, for I have not forgotten your commands. He compared himself to a wandering sheep. Although sheep can be valuable creatures, they are also notoriously rebellious and will sometimes drift away from their shepherd. Putting in need of rescue. The psalmist's spiritual navigation skills had deteriorated and his spiritual sense of direction had faded, so he needed God to pursue him and give him a discerning mind. When we wander away from God's care, He loves us enough to seek us and lead us back to Himself, as He helps us understand the Scriptures and follow all his commands, and we can avoid getting spiritually lost. Let's pray. Lord, we are often prone to wandering off and getting lost, much like sheep. And when we lose our way, would you lead us back to the safety of your care? Give us discerning minds and steady hearts so that we may follow your word and walk in step with you. Thank you, Lord. It's in Jesus name that we pray. Amen. As you go about your day reflect on these in what ways have you drifted away from God and His wisdom? In what ways will you remember his instruction? This episode centers on the profound truth that when we veer off course spiritually, God's love compels Him to pursue us and guide us back. Reflecting on Psalm 119:169-176, the devotional explores our tendency to stray and God's enduring commitment to lead us home, much like a shepherd seeking a lost sheep.
The episode gently reminds listeners that spiritual “lostness” is a universal human experience, but God’s loving pursuit is steadfast.
