Failure Is Not the Finish Line

Jeff recounts speaking with a man who described himself simply as “a failure.” He believed failed relationships, career setbacks, fitness struggles, and disappointments had become his identity.

Jeff challenges that thinking.

Failure is something that happened. It is not who you are.

Instead of treating setbacks as proof that success is impossible, we can begin asking what the experience is trying to teach us. Failure can shake loose new thoughts, create unexpected innovations, and force us to develop skills we would never have pursued while everything was comfortable.

As Jeff explains, we can learn to collect failures and rejection like someone panning for gold—sifting through what did not work until we uncover what does.

Ask a Better Question

One of the episode’s central lessons is that the quality of our lives is often influenced by the quality of the questions we ask.

Questions such as these tend to keep people trapped:

“Why does this always happen to me?”
“Why was I so stupid?”
“Can I really do this?”
“What if I fail?”

Jeff recommends replacing “Can I?” with “How can I?”

Instead of asking, “Can I get healthier?” ask:

“How can I make one healthier choice today?”

Instead of asking, “Can I become a speaker?” ask:

“How can I practice speaking for one minute?”

The first question invites doubt. The second instructs the mind to begin searching for solutions.

The Power of “Yet”

David and Jeff discuss the enormous influence of small words.

“I can’t do it” becomes:

“I can’t do it yet.”

“I have never been good at public speaking” becomes:

“Up until now, I haven’t been confident speaking publicly.”

Jeff adds another important statement:

“And now I choose…”

“Up until now, I have feared public speaking, and now I choose to improve one percent at a time.”

This language does not deny the past. It simply stops allowing the past to control the future.

Choosing a New Identity

Jeff shares his experience with cold-water exposure. After spending most of his life believing he could not tolerate the cold, he tried repeating the affirmation, “I love the cold.”

His mind rejected it immediately.

He then changed the statement to:

“I choose to love the cold.”

That small adjustment removed the internal argument. His subconscious could challenge whether he currently loved the cold, but it could not argue with his ability to choose.

David connects this idea to his recent health experience. After doctors discovered serious arterial blockages and placed a stent, David made a clear decision to change his eating habits and prioritize his health.

The lesson is not simply to hope circumstances improve. It is to make a choice, establish clear boundaries, and support that decision through consistent action.

Boundaries That Actually Hold

Jeff describes a practical strategy he has used to manage his weight: choosing a maximum clothing size and refusing to purchase anything larger.

The point is not the clothing itself. It is creating a boundary that is firm enough to guide behavior.

Some boundaries are like painted lines on a road. They can be crossed.

Others are like the concrete divider in the center of a highway. They are non-negotiable.

Whether the issue is health, alcohol, relationships, work, or personal habits, strong boundaries reduce the constant need to renegotiate with ourselves.

PRTR: Pain Resolving and Trigger Remapping

Jeff explains his proprietary approach called PRTR, or Pain Resolving and Trigger Remapping.

Painful experiences can become connected to names, songs, smells, places, memories, or situations. Even when people try to avoid the memory, the emotional response may continue operating beneath the surface.

PRTR is designed to help resolve the emotional pain associated with an experience and then remap the old trigger toward a safer or more positive internal response.

Jeff compares unresolved trauma to walking with a splinter. Every step hurts because the splinter is still present. Rather than merely learning to tolerate the pain, the goal is to remove the splinter.

David offers another image: a frightening movie feels very different when the theater lights are turned on. The movie has not changed, but the viewer’s experience of it has.

Healing does not require pretending that something never happened. It means reaching a place where the memory no longer controls the present.

What Hypnosis Really Is

Jeff defines hypnosis simply as:

A suggestion combined with a reception.

A movie suggests sadness, fear, excitement, or hope. When the audience accepts that suggestion and feels the emotion, a hypnotic process is already taking place.

Hypnosis does not always involve swinging watches or theatrical performances. It can happen through language, stories, memories, questions, music, and repeated beliefs.

That makes the words we use—especially the words we repeatedly say to ourselves—extremely important.

The Rule of One

Jeff closes with a simple principle: Do one thing.

Too tired to exercise? Move for one minute.

Want to write a book? Write one sentence.

Need to repair your health? Make one better choice.

Want to build confidence? Take one uncomfortable but manageable step.

The goal is not to perform a complete transformation in a single day. The goal is to begin.

Lower the barrier, take the smallest possible step, celebrate the progress, and continue moving.

Ask a better question.

Instead of asking why life is against you, ask how you can use the experience.

Instead of wondering whether you are capable, ask what the next step would look like.

Instead of fearing failure, ask what failure may be trying to teach you.

Your thoughts influence your actions. Your actions shape your outcomes. And sometimes one better question is enough to redirect your entire life.
