Hey, Pitchfork listeners. Goldie here. Last year we talked with actor, writer and cryptocurrency skeptic Ben McKenzie about his book Easy Cryptocurrency, Casino Capitalism and the Golden Age of Fraud. And since his new documentary, everyone is lying to you for Money is now out in theaters, we thought now would be a good time to revisit that conversation. Hope you enjoy.

The rising inequality and growing political instability that we see today are the direct result of decades of bad economic theory.

The last five decades of trickle down economics haven't worked. But what's the alternative?
Nick Hanauer (0:44)
Middle out economics is the answer because

the middle class is the source of growth, not its consequence.

Goldie. This week we're talking to an actor. We don't usually do that.
Goldie (1:15)
No, we don't. No.
Nick Hanauer (1:17)
I think this may be our first actor ever.
Goldie (1:21)
I think a lot of our guests are, especially the politicians, are actors.
Nick Hanauer (1:25)
That's true, that's true, that's true.

But this is an actual professional actor you've seen on TV, Ben McKenzie. You might know him from his roles on the O.C. southland or Gotham. He's an actor and a writer. Also, apparently we learned he's directing a film that'll be coming out shortly. And he is also the co author of the book Easy Money, Cryptocurrency, Casino Capitalism and the Golden Age of Fraud with journalist Jacob Silverman. And in case you couldn't tell from that title, that Easy money he's talking about isn't really money, Nick. It's crypto.
